Strategies for Finding the Lowest Airfare to Hawaii – Go Visit

Strategies for Finding the Lowest Airfare to Hawaii

How to get the cheapest airfare

How to get the cheapest airfare

One of the most predictably unpredictable expenses of traveling to Hawaii is the cost of airfare. It s also one of the more expensive factors in your Hawaii vacation budget.

Fares fluctuate so often that it’s difficult to know when to purchase tickets. Finding the absolute lowest airfare is a mix of luck, knowledge and skill. In the absence of an exact science, we have make use of the available tools and make some calculated guesses. Here are some strategies to help you make a sound decision on when to purchase your flights to Hawaii.

Use Flight Search Engine Alerts

To make the best decision on when to buy flights to Hawaii, you need to make an informed decision. The best way to start getting helpful information is to sign up for the free email alerts from flight search engines. What s a flight search engine? Flight search engines monitor fares for all the major airlines.

The sooner you start to watch fares the better, but ideally start at least around five or six months before your desired trip. (If you ve already passed that mark, start where you are. It s not too late.) You ll quickly start to learn low fares from high fares.

My favorite fare email alert system that I reference almost daily is Airfarewatchdog.com. I have found numerous fare sales for my route to Hawaii via Airfarewatchdog.com s fare emails.

For a quick and easy search to determine the lowest available fare for your routes, I like using the Flexible Dates tab at CheapAir.com. (Note that if you purchase your flights via CheapAir.com and the fares drop, you may be entitled to credit up to $100 towards a future flight purchase. It s a little bit of fare reduction insurance, so to speak. We ve actually used that feature and did get credit. You are responsible for monitoring drops. This feature is subject to change, but here s a link to the policy that s active as of February 2016.

If you have the option, get the updates daily. Yeah, it’s going to stuff your inbox, but fares can fluctuate daily, so it’s best to be in the know on a daily basis, especially if you are anxious to book.

When you are setting up your alerts, if you are headed to the Big Island, Kauai, and/or Maui, I recommend that you also check airfare to Oahu. Hawaii’s major airline hub is in Oahu’s Honolulu Airport (HNL), so that majority of flights from the mainland go in and out of Honolulu. (Maui s OGG is emerging as Hawaii s secondary hub.) On top of that, the vast majority of inter-island flights connect or originate in Honolulu. Let’s say you are going to Kauai, it’s possible that you could save some money by flying into Honolulu first and getting an inter-island flight from there. So, consider all your options by pricing out each scenario. (See my guide to inter-island travel in Hawaii.)

If you can be flexible with your travel dates, you can get better deals. Use the flight search engine s flexible search feature to find the cheapest days to travel. You can really save some big bucks by being flexible.

Another way to be flexible is to consider flying from alternate airports. For example, Raleigh-Durham (RDU) is my preferred airport. If I found a fare that’s low enough, I’d be willing to drive to Charlotte (CLT) or Greensboro (GSO) for the savings. So, set alerts up for nearby airports.

Fly to Hawaii when demand is down making flights (and accommodations) cheaper

The best time to visit Hawaii is when the crowds are down and so are the prices. With the exception of holidays, April, May, September and October are the best months to travel to Hawaii. See our post on the best time to go to Hawaii for see other low demand times.

If you are trying to get the lowest airfare to Hawaii, don t plan your vacation around a holiday. That s when demand is high and the airlines don t discount. If you must go over a holiday, experts recommend flying on the holiday itself to get the cheapest fare.

Weekend travel to and from Hawaii is in highest demand and therefore more expensive. If you can travel weekday to weekday, you tend to get lower fares and the flight may not be as full.

Best Time to Buy

A study by CheapAir.com indicates that the average prime booking window is between 21 and 112 days of your departure. They ve created a customizable booking window predictor for your particular route.

In this ABC News article , one of the top airfare gurus, Rick Seaney, says,

“Typically, airlines start actively managing their cheapest seats about four months before departure….Don t buy too early; tickets purchased before this four month window will generally be priced at a midtier level. An exception: shopping for busy holiday times (Thanksgiving, Christmas); due to current price hikes and ever-increasing fuel surcharges, you may want to purchase these tickets earlier than usual, to lock in the price.”

Hopper is a free app that monitors and predicts airfare for your particular route. It s supposed to tell you when you should buy your tickets. You can learn more here.

If you are having a difficult time deciding on when to purchase your airline tickets, one trick we use is to go directly to the airline s website and view available seats for the specific flights and dates we want. If the plane looks full, it s unlikely that fares will be discounted. If there are lots of available seats, there s a descent chance that fares may be coming down.

When you come across a deal, snag it. Aim to make that purchase as quickly as possible as it could be gone the next day or even the next hour. I’ve experienced “purchase paralysis” and lost deals. I still remember a brief fare war a couple of years ago. I could have flown from Charlotte to Honolulu for around $250 round-trip, but I took too long trying to decide what to do, that I lost the chance to get that super low rate.

Beware of Sneaky Snake Advertising

When you see exceptionally low airfare, be sure to read the fine print before you get excited. Airlines will try to hook you in with a fly to Hawaii for $379. At first, that sounds great, but what they don’t tell you is that the fare is one-way based on round-trip travel and taxes and fees are an additional charge. So the flights to Hawaii that you thought were $379 are going to end up costing over $800 – not exactly the deal you were expecting from the glitzy ad.

All flights to Hawaii are not created equal, so know what you’re getting when you book. Andy and I will often choose a slightly more expensive fare because it offers less stops, shorter overall travel time, and a bigger plane. We fly from RDU and most of the cheapest fares have us going through Dallas to Los Angeles to Hawaii. We much prefer to cut out the Los Angeles stop, fly in the larger planes, and save time. So, spend a little time educating yourself on the shortest routes and aircraft sizes to suit your preference. SeatGuru.com can be a useful resource when choosing planes and seats.

If you ve checked airfare, then checked again later at the same website and the price has suddenly jumped up, clear the cookies from your computer and check again.

I wish you the best of luck in finding the lowest cost airfare to Hawaii!

How to get cheap flights

Sally | Edited by Steve N

Updated November 2017

How to get cheap flightsLeave it until the last minute and flight costs are often sky-high but plan ahead and book the right way and the savings can soar. Whether you’ve the flexibility to travel anywhere, anytime, or are looking for set places and dates, we’ve 27 tips to cut the cost of jet-setting.

Not all comparison sites are the same, so this guide takes you through the different types. Plus we’ve clever tricks to cut the cost of school holiday travel, uncover how many cheap seats are left, grab credit card freebie flights and more.

Affected by the Monarch collapse? Monarch Airlines went into administration on 2 Oct 2017, with an estimated 860,000 customers affected. If you’re one of them and you’re looking for help getting home, demanding a refund or making a travel insurance claim, see our Monarch Airlines help guide.

27 cheap flight tips, including.

Use the top comparison sites to slash costs if you know your exact dates and destination

If you know when and where you want to go, then don’t go direct to an airline; use a price comparison site to get lots of data in a very short time. However.

Different comparison sites search different firms, so check at least two.

Top pick comparison sites

All allow you to search by flight class and include travel brokers, charter airlines and budget airlines.

    How to get cheap flights

Kayak* for a comparison incl baggage and payment fees. We argue within MSE Towers about the very top pick, but Kayak is Martin’s favourite, so it wins. Not only that, but it also allows you to filter options based on credit/debit card fees and whether or not you want to check in bags so you can compare costs more accurately.

How to get cheap flights

Skyscanner* for the very cheapest time to fly. Another MSE Towers favourite, Skyscanner gives you fare options spread over a month to find exactly when’s cheapest. It has particularly strong coverage of budget flights, searching over 1,200 airlines and travel sites in total.

How to get cheap flights

Momondo* for its flight data info. We like Momondo for its nifty tool that tells you the cheapest and most expensive dates around your flight, as well as helpful insights such as the cheapest airport to fly from/into. It doesn’t do it for all destinations, but it has the biggies – New York, Dubai, Sydney, Cape Town.

It’s also worth checking Google – it can be a useful starting point before going to some of the others – plus try Cheapflights, Fly.com, Dohop. If you want a hotel too, Expedia* can be a good option. Discuss which ones you prefer in the forum.

Flight brokers can give big discounts if you’re booking a hotel as well

How to get cheap flightsFlight brokers are essentially online travel agents. They allow you to book flights, hotels and car hire, often giving extra discounts if you combine them. Plus, you get extra protection for combination bookings.

While this can be a big boon, sometimes you’ll find it’s cheaper to book separately use the comparison sites above for flights, and get the best price for accommodation using our Cheap Hotels guide. But, you need to balance the gain of the protection against the extra cost.

What protection do I get?

If you make flight and accommodation bookings with the same company within the same day, you get ATOL protection even though it’s not a formal package deal. This means that if your travel operator goes bust, your money is protected, and if you’re already away, it’ll get you home. You can read more about ATOL in our Holiday Rights guide.

When is the best time to book?

When looking for cheap flight tickets, timing is absolutely crucial.

Unlike package holidays, flights should generally be booked early. Business folk will pay top dollar at the last minute, so prices soar.

Unless you prefer sticking with the same airline and you’re holding out for a sale you know is coming up, it’s usually best to book as early as you can.

The latest research from the comparison site Momondo* found it’s generally best to book 56 days ahead (last time it did the research it was 53) and that booking then is on average 28% cheaper than booking on the day of departure. The last cheap booking date varies by destination, though, so you can use Momondo’s ‘Flight Insight’ tab on many routes to see the data for it (see Flight Insight for info).

However Momondo’s figures are based on the prices quoted in flight searches, and that factors in sales too, so take its ‘perfect day to book’ info with a big pinch of salt, and if in doubt book early.

Momondo also found that Tuesdays and evenings (after 6pm) are generally the cheapest time to fly, while Saturdays are the most expensive. If you can be flexible, it’s worth checking prices on different days and at different times to see if you can cut the cost further.

Beat the school holiday price hikes with the Easyjet ‘book the wrong date’ trick

We’ve found a clever way to bag cheaper flights using Easyjet’s ‘Flexifares’, which let you switch dates by a few weeks without paying extra. It works the whole year round, but it’s particularly useful when prices shoot up during the school holidays. It’s just one of several tips we’ve got to flying with Easyjet – see Easyjet Flight Tricks for more.

How to get cheap flights

The idea is to book a Flexifare on the same route at a less busy time when flights are cheaper. Then after 24 hours, provided there’s capacity, you can switch it to the dates you originally wanted at no extra charge. It’s not the easiest trick in the book, but if it works it could save you Ј100s.

We had to go away in the last week of May prices were through the roof because it was half term. Flights for the family, travelling at the weekend with luggage, cost Ј836 all-in. But booking flexi-flights two weeks earlier cost just Ј405. After a nervous 24-hour wait we switched them to the weekend we wanted Ј431 saved!

Forumite Green1960 saved Ј700 on flights to Lanzarote in the school hols:

When we went on the Easyjet website, the flights were over Ј1,500 including bags. We then booked the flexi-flights, which were Ј848 a saving of Ј700. A bit nerve-wracking for the 24 hours, but we know it works. There must be availability obviously on the dates you are changing to.

How to do it: full step-by-step help

It’s not guaranteed, but follow our steps to see if it works for you.

Step 1: Check at least 20 seats are available on the date you want to fly. This trick is a bit of a gamble because you have to wait before switching your flights, there’s always a risk the seats you want could be snapped up in the meantime and that you could be left with a ticket for the wrong dates.

Our suggestion then is that you pretend to book standard tickets for a large party on the dates you actually want to fly (but don’t actually go through with the purchase). If you can still get a quote for, say, 20 seats, chances are there’ll still be room once you switch flights. The fewer seats left, the more of a gamble you’re taking.

Step 2: Book a cheaper Flexifare on an alternate date. Find and book a Flexifare ticket on the same route, no more than one week before or three weeks after you want to fly. As a bonus, these tickets also include speedy boarding and one piece of hold luggage but they aren’t available on every route, so check your destination’s included.

Step 3: Watch and wait. This is the nerve-wracking bit. You’ll need to wait at least 24 hours until you switch your Flexifare tickets to the dates you want. You’ll be able to move each ticket by up to one week before or three weeks after, if there’s space on a flight. You can change the dates as many times as you like but if there’s no availability, you won’t be able to switch.

Step 4: Switch your flights as soon as you can. As soon as the 24 hours are up, log on to the Easyjet website, check the dates you’re after are still available and switch your flights.

Learn from the man who booked a trip to Belize for £18

    The Independent Travel

Jack Sheldon is the 29-year-old brain behind Jack’s Flight Club – a newsletter sending its 89,000 subscribers breathtakingly low deals on flights from the UK and Ireland.

The Texan native moved to London six years ago and swiftly built a reputation among his friends for always finding the cheapest fares. He decided to share his skills by launching his service – which scans for the best discounts, hidden offers and error fares – last September. He’s not the first to do this, of course – sites like Scott’s Cheap Flights do exactly the same – but Sheldon’s strong point is that his deals are all from the UK and Ireland.

How to get the cheapest flights

The 7 best airlines for customer service

“I’ve always loved to travel and found that you could always find a cheap place to stay or find cheaper food but flights were always the place where you spent the most,” he told The Independent. Not any more – his personal best is a £18 return fare from London to Belize on American Airlines (which, he admits, is “exceptionally rare”).

Want to be in with a chance of matching that? Sheldon’s shared his top tips on how to grab the lowest cost flights.

    Don’t book direct

“The main mistake people make in booking flights is going straight to the airline website. While booking direct will make things easier should you need to change your travel plans, the cheapest fares are often found by booking with various online travel agencies.

“Google Flights is a great resource and enables you to track flight prices across the board by setting yourself an alert.”

    Know when to book

“Other major mistakes include booking too late or too early (depending on the season, route etc) and only sticking to certain airlines. Not spending enough time checking is also a mistake – this one really isn’t anyone’s fault as most people don’t have the time, but it really does take a lot of checking particular routes to know when to book.

“Even peak season flights over summer or Christmas season can be got at very, very low fares if you time it just right. For summer, it’s often better to buy in January-February or wait until May-June. For Christmas-time trips summer is the best time to start deal hunting, though deals will come up all the way into November.”

    Ignore the myths

How to get the cheapest flights

This man will save you thousands of pounds on flights

“There are so many of them you should ignore. Booking as soon as the flights come out is one – this is almost never a good idea. In the last few years there has been a rumour that deleting your cookie files when repeating a flight search will make it cheaper. This is definitely false.

“Another myth is that buying on certain days will get you a better deal. While it’s often cheaper to fly on Tuesdays to Thursdays, airlines definitely do not drop their fares for those who buy tickets on those days of the week.

“It’s also not correct that last-minute fares are always more expensive. While mostly true, there are airlines like Thomson which break the mould completely by offering ridiculous deals on last-minute flights – for example, they recently had a last-minute deal for £269 return to the Dominican Republic.”

How to get the cheapest flights

    Fastest finger first

“Timing is important – some of these fares, especially the mistake fares, will only last a few hour or a couple of days at most. So finding out when they first drop and booking quickly is a massive advantage. For example, a recent fare on Aero Mexico from the UK to Havana was £120 return, but this fare only lasted a couple of hours and the prices quadrupled after that. On average there is about one mistake fare a month from the UK.”

Don’t be shy about booking a mistake fare

“‘Mistake’ fares – when thanks to a system error flights cost a fraction of what they should – are a win-win situation. The airline will always refund you the money if it is a mistake – you’ll never be out of pocket. But more positively, around 60 per cent of fares are honoured. You should generally wait around two weeks before considering it confirmed – that’s the latest I’ve heard of that an airline has got in touch to refund a fare. The premium carriers are often more likely to honour their mistake fares than airlines at the more budget end.”

    Make connections

“You’re not getting any bargains on direct flights coming out the UK – British Airways does not want to discount its fares from its hub airports. If you are willing to connect in a European city for a long-haul trip, your flight will be cheaper. On the flip side if you are coming from Europe you can always find great deals stopping over in London.”

Keep an eye on these airlines

“Bargains can be found everywhere, but KLM comes up quite often at the moment, connecting to locations through its Amsterdam hub. Every now and again you’ll get a great deal on Alitalia – for example, we recently found one round trip for about £400 to Chile, which is about half the current price of a return. KLM also has the most routes to the UK, so you can fly from a local UK airport like Norwich to Amsterdam to connect – very convenient.”

    Learn to love America

“New York City, Boston, and Miami all come up quite often for great deals, while South American destinations like Argentina and Chile are far more elusive for deal-hunting. Being flexible definitely helps, but so does being patient. All destinations eventually have price drops and it’s a matter of being alert at the right time to take advantage of them.”

You can get business class bargains too

“There are deals out there for premium economy and business class but I only include the fares in the club if they’re comparable to an economy class fare. For example we had a business class fare on TAP, Portugal’s national carrier from London to Mozambique via Lisbon which was £606. That’s less than an economy return and significantly less than the £2,500 that the ticket usually sells at.”

A cheap fare doesn’t necessarily mean the worst seat

“The only person who will know what fare you paid is you.”

Cheap Flights: When to Book Thanksgiving, Christmas Airfare, Money, how to

Thanksgiving Flights Are Cheapest Right Now. Here’s How to Get the Best Deals

If you haven t already purchased airline tickets for the Thanksgiving holidays, it s time to act quickly or be prepared to pay a steep price. It s best to book flights for the Christmas period sooner than later as well.

Data from the travel search engine and research site Hipmunk.com indicates that travelers will save 27%, on average, by booking Thanksgiving flights this week compared to the week before the holiday. The average round-trip flight price for a domestic route during the holidays costs $374 if the ticket is purchased this week, versus $476 in the days before Thanksgiving.

If you re not ready to book flights now, it s really in your best interest to at least get your act together by around Halloween. The average Thanksgiving flight costs $385 if booked by the end of October, according to Hipmunk. After that, flight prices increase dramatically.

Research from Expedia also recommends booking Thanksgiving flights at least 60 days in advance so, right about now to get the lowest prices.

Meanwhile, a new report from Hopper.com stresses the importance of booking Thanksgiving flights no later than Halloween. Thanksgiving airfare tends to be very stable during the month of October so prices won t vary much, but make sure you book before the week of Halloween, Hopper chief data scientist Patrick Surrey writes. If you wait until early November to book your flight, it will cost you about $1 per day you wait. Then prices begin spiking by $10 per day during the final two weeks leading up to Thanksgiving.

If possible, you should try to nail down plans and book tickets for Christmas travel far in advance as well. The Hipmunk study shows that the average Christmastime flight costs $365 if booked the week of September 25, rising to $384 for bookings made at the end of October. Either price point is way better than tickets purchased the week before Christmas. By then, the average flight costs over $500.

Even though holiday period flights are generally cheaper if you book now, the precise days you flight can still make a big difference in how much you pay. Availability of the cheapest seats on any given plane is always limited, and the lowest-price tickets for peak-demand days like the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and the Sunday after Thanksgiving are often already sold out.

We checked flight prices on a few sample routes to get an idea for how much travelers would pay right now for Thanksgiving airfare and how much they could save by being flexible with departure dates.

Nashville to Fort Lauderdale, from $60

Right now, Southwest Airlines has flights from Nashville to Fort Lauderdale starting at $60 if you fly on the Monday or Tuesday before Thanksgiving. We also found some $60 seats for return flights on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. Nearly all of the flights on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving were $160 and up one way, and return flights on Sunday were exceptionally pricey, running around $400.

New York to Chicago, from $78

Traveling on Thanksgiving itself is an easy way to save compared to traveling on the day before. We found Thanksgiving Day flights available on Spirit Airlines from LaGuardia in New York City to Chicago O Hare from only $78. With a return on Monday morning, a round trip could be had for only $186. For the sake of comparison, the lowest-price round trip for a departure on Wednesday with a Sunday return was over $350.

Oakland to Salt Lake City, from $71

The least expensive tickets from Oakland to Salt Lake City were for departures on Thanksgiving Day itself, with flights from $71 on Southwest. Travelers wouldn t have to pay that much more to fly in the day before, however, with direct flights available from $99. As for the return, you ll pay at least $300 to fly on Sunday, compared to only $80 on Tuesday.

Travelers will generally also save on Thanksgiving period international flights by avoiding peak days the Sunday after Thanksgiving in particular. For flights from Boston to Dublin on Aer Lingus, tickets started at only $174 for departures on Wednesday or Thanksgiving itself. The cheapest return ticket we found for Sunday would cost a whopping $817, compared to $222 if you flew back on the Tuesday or Wednesday after Thanksgiving weekend.

In light of travel search data and our own findings in gathering sample airfares, here are the key takeaways for finding the least expensive Thanksgiving flights possible:

Book ASAP. Airfare is only going to get more expensive between now and Thanksgiving.

Act by Halloween at the latest. Experts say that Thanksgiving flight prices are likely to increase slightly over the next few weeks, and then will begin spiking in early November.

Avoid Sunday flights. Being flexible with travel dates can help you save significantly. While traveling on Monday or Thursday of Thanksgiving week will save you money compared to flying on Wednesday, it s even more important to try to avoid Sunday of Thanksgiving weekend. That s the absolute peak day of this peak period. The Hopper study shows that the average domestic flight costs $420 one way on Sunday, November 26, compared to about $275 on Tuesday and $259 on Wednesday.

How to Find Cheap Flights to New York City, Travel Leisure,

How to Find Cheap Flights to New York City

The odds of finding a cheap flight to New York City are frequently in travelers’ favor: The Big Apple is the world’s busiest city airport system in number of flights and the second busiest in number of passengers. That makes for stiff competition between airlines.

But if you really want to save big, here are some ways to up your chances.

    Budget Airlines

All seven of the low-cost carriers in the United States fly into at least one of the New York City area’s three airports: John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), in Queens; LaGuardia Airport (LGA), also in Queens; and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), across the Hudson River from Manhattan in Newark, New Jersey.

Budget airlines are a great place to find cheap flights to New York City. Here are the low-cost carriers that serve each of NYC’s three airports:

    • JFK: JetBlue, Sun Country Airlines, Virgin America
    • LaGuardia: Frontier Airlines, JetBlue, Southwest Airlines, Spirit Airlines, Virgin America
    • Newark: Allegiant Air, JetBlue, Southwest Airlines, Spirit Airlines, Virgin America

The trick to getting a good deal on a budget airline, however, is knowing how you’ll be traveling and what fees you might incur. For example, if you’ll have luggage to check, the fees on a budget airline might make the final price comparable to a major carrier. Or if you’ll absolutely need a window or aisle seat, you’ll want to look for an airfare that includes seat selection.

Where to Find a Good Deal

As soon as you have a general idea of your travel dates, get started with travel search engines like Google Flights, Kayak, Momondo, and Skyscanner.

Keep in mind that some airlines, like Southwest, do not appear in conventional search engine results. You’ll have to go directly to the Southwest website to compare flights — although that’s less necessary for New York City searches, as the airline has limited service to the city.

Airfares do not vary greatly between websites, whether found through a search engine or on an airline’s own website. Finding a good deal is more about knowing *what* to look for than *where* to look.

If you are flexible about which of New York City’s three airports you’d like to fly into — each has their pros and cons — you’re in an even better position to find a good deal. For example, in Google Flights, you can set the destination for “New York City (all airports).” Just be sure you note which one you’re flying in to and out of: LaGuardia is the closest to midtown Manhattan, but the public transit options ($2.75 per person) are not great (unless transfering buses with luggage is your idea of fun) so a taxi or car service ($30-$45) is your best option. JFK is an hour and a half-ish from the city on public transit (at $7.75 per person, be prepared to carry your luggage up stairs and across some distance), and a $60-$80 taxi or car service ride which can be more depending on traffic. Newark is a $90+ ride, so the AirTrain and then NJ Transit (to Penn Station NOT Newark Penn Station) is often the best option (at $13 per person).

Now that we’ve covered the transportation costs from each airport, we can get into airfare differences by airport. A quick search for flights for a long a weekend in November from Los Angeles shows the cheapest flights from Newark, for $251 round-trip, nonstop. Round-trip fares to JFK nonstop start at $271, and round-trip fares to LaGuardia with one stop (there are no nonstops from LAX to LGA) start at $268. Depending on how you plan to get into the city, those price differences could either save you money or not really make a difference.

    When to Buy

The cheapest time to visit the city is between January and March if you are willing to bundle up against the cold.

As for when to buy, that varies. By starting an airfare search as early as possible, you can up your chances of finding a deal. Most major flight search engines now include the option to add alerts so you can get an email about price changes. Some services are designed entirely around them: Airfare forecasting app Hopper will tell you if current airfares are good, or if you should wait to buy — and then it’ll send you an alert.

Generally, flight prices will be relatively stagnant from five months up to two months before travel dates, then rise and fall depending on demand (rising for popular travel dates, falling for unpopular dates) from a couple months until two weeks before. At that point, it’s most likely that prices will increase. But general airfare trends will never get you as good a deal as some research and custom alerts.

Bonus tip: Sign up for emails from JetBlue, which has a hub in New York City and frequently sends out flash sales.

Cheapest Days to Fly and Best Time to Buy Airline Tickets,

Cheapest Days to Fly and Best Time to Buy Airline Tickets

We all want the cheapest flights possible and that s what this guide is all about: Finding the cheapest days to fly and getting the best deals on airfare. Comparison shopping is a big help and so is knowing when to buy tickets and the best days to fly. There are lots of other ways to save, too, so let s get started.

    1. Shop on Tuesday

Best day to shop: The best time to book a U.S. flight is usually Tuesday at about 3 p.m. eastern time. Many airlines release weekly airfare sales in the early morning hours of Tuesday, and by mid-afternoon, competing airlines have matched sale prices. In other words, shoppers now have the most deals to choose from.

    2. Don t Shop too Early or too Late

Careful! Buy too early and you could pay too much. Buy too late and you could pay way too much. The sweet spot for deals is usually found in the following shopping windows.

U.S. tickets: Shop between 3 months and 30 days before departure.

International tickets: Shop between 5 ½ months and 1 ½ months before departure.

Popular times to fly: For peak travel periods such as June, July and August; Thanksgiving or Christmas/New Year s; and other holiday dates, purchase tickets two months in advance.

    3. Always Compare Airfare

The golden rule of shopping: Always compare airfares. Some folks don t because they know their favorite airline always has the best deal, but no airline always has the cheapest prices, not Spirit, not Southwest, not every single time, and we’ve proved this. If you don’t compare, you could pay too much and why pay a penny more than you have to?

How to find the cheapest airline tickets

Tip:Set a FareCompare airfare alert and we ll do the work for you! Signing up for alerts only takes a second and the deals come to you. If you see one you like, act fast; the best deals don’t last.

    4. Cheapest Days to Fly

Save even more by knowing the cheapest days to fly. If you can t book cheap days for your entire flight, do it for one leg of the trip and you ll still see some savings.

Cheap days: In the U.S., Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday are usually cheapest. For international travel, weekdays are usually cheaper than weekends.

Expensive days: Fridays and Sundays usually cost more, especially in the U.S.

Cheap times of day: Fly when most people don’t want to, so cheap times include dawn, overnight and flights around the lunch and dinner hour.

Tip: We can help you find the cheapest days from your city with the Getaway Map. Just type in your hometown, click the month or season you d like the fly, and deals to destinations around the world fill the screen.

    5. Fly the Cheapest Route

Non-stops vs. connecting flights: Non-stops are more convenient but you can sometimes find much better deals on connecting flights with savings up to 50%. Always compare the price of a non-stop with a connecting flight before you ding your credit card, and only you can decide if a cheaper price is worth the inconvenience of a longer travel day.

    6. Book Group Travel One Ticket at a Time

This won t always save money, but it could so it s always worth a try.

How to shop: When booking travel for two or more people, book just one ticket to start because a quirk in airline reservation systems means multiple tickets sold in a single transaction must be the same price. For example, say you need two tickets and the airline has one for $100 while all the others are $125. Unfortunately, the two tickets you buy in a single transaction will cost you $125 each. However, if you buy those tickets one-at-a-time, you ll pay $100 for one, $125 for the other.

We keep an eye on airfare sales and frequently post them to Facebook and Twitter. Tips, too. We d love it if you joined us. Happy travels!

Here are 6 Easy Ways to Find the Cheapest Flights Using

Here are 6 Easy Ways to Find the Cheapest Flights Using Google

It’s better than any travel agent.

If you’re not already familiar with Google Flights, let us introduce you to one of the quickest and most efficient travel search engines out there. In a matter of seconds, you can have access to the cheapest flights directly from the carrier, thanks to the same snazzy technology used by both KAYAK and Orbitz—but with a few more bells and whistles.

Instead of trying to figure out the best times and days to book your flights, this handy online tool takes all the guesswork out of planning your vacation. So the next time you’re on Google to search for a slow-cooker recipe or a how-to video, take a peek at the Flights option at the very top of your search results. While you’re at it, take advantage of these six unique features to get the best deal on your upcoming fall getaway.

    1. No specific destination in mind? Try the “Explore Map” option.

Located in the top left menu tab, the “explore” feature lets you browse around specific regions or areas of interest to see the lowest air fares. Feeling lucky? Let Google decide your next slice of paradise with the “I’m Feeling Lucky” button, which will give you random dates and destinations to choose from, based on your search history and popular places among its users. Basically, it’s like throwing a dart at a map to discover your next adventure.

    2. Flexible on dates or airports? The calendar view is the best function for saving money.

The calendar view gives you a quick glimpse of flight prices, with the lowest fares displayed for upcoming dates. This option shows up when you click the departure or arrival dates. You can also play around with choosing different airports to see if there’s a major difference in price. The “tips” option in the sidebar at the top of your flight results also provides helpful suggestions, such as alternative dates, airports, ways you can save money, and deals on upgrades. The “tips” feature can also show you when first-class seats are affordable, or if a flight will be cheaper in a few days.

    3. When you have a set itinerary, however, sign up for price alerts.

The great thing about Google Flights is that it allows you to receive price alerts on your mobile device or via email. Not to mention, the search engine has a specific algorithm that analyzes price trends to alert you when fares increase or decrease, and by what margins. You can sign up for this option when browsing.

    4. Frequent flyer? Don’t miss out on the “Track Price” button.

If you often fly the same route for business or pleasure, you can track the average fare price. Simply, select the itinerary you want Google to track by clicking the button. You can do this before you choose a departing flight or after you select the arrival and departure flights. Until the day of your flight, Google will update the price trends and send you predictions of the best time to purchase. Of course, this doesn’t apply to airlines like Southwest, whose prices are only available through their portal.

    5. What about extra bags and fees?

Again, Google Flights is savvy enough to determine add-on fees and when carry-on bags are not included in the total price, and you can also find out what’s included in your ticket, like Wi-Fi, entertainment, and even legroom.

    6. Make good use of those miles and rewards points with the “Airline” tab.

If you’re a member of a rewards program, locate the “Airline” tab and search for flights either by a specific airline or alliance group (rewards program). Google Flights will show you all the flights in that particular network for you to earn or use your points.

Learn from the man who booked a trip to Belize for £18

    • Ravneet Ahluwalia
    • Monday 26 June 2017 11:30 BST

10 Ways to Get the Cheapest Airfares to Panama, how to

    Panamainfo.com

Panama is a relatively new destination and so airfares are a bit higher than longtime destinations like Mexico and Costa Rica. Major airlines that fly to Panama are United, Delta, American, Copa, Spirit, Mexicana, Taca and KLM from Amsterdam and Air France. Panama’s award winning major airline Copa is excellent.

Panama has direct flights from New York (Copa, Delta), Chicago ( United, Copa) Newark (United, Copa) from Washington D.C. (Copa). Miami (American, Copa), Los Angeles (Copa), Houston (United), Dallas (American), Boston ( Copa) Las Vegas ( Copa) Orlando (Copa) and Fort Lauderdale (Copa Spirit) From Canada: Toronto ( Copa) Montreal (Copa)

Some tips on getting the cheapest airfares.

    1. Fly Discount Spirit Air but they’re not reliable.

Spirit Air is an American discount airline offering the cheapest airfares to Panama from their Fort Lauderdale, Florida hub. You can fly with them via US cities like Chicago. However, this is only an option if you don’t have to get to Panama on a certain date. Spirit Air is unreliable- frequently connections are not made and flights are cancelled. These are red-eye flights and are Mondays, Wednesday and Saturdays only and returning from Panama Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays only.

    2. Fly From Costa Rica. For those visiting West Panama ie Bocas del Toro or Chiriqui province,

you can fly to Costa Rica and then fly to David, Panama. Because of high volume, airfares are much cheaper to Costa Rica and with some research you can find flights to San Jose for as little as $200.00. From San Jose you can take bus (around $30) to David, the capital of Chiriqui or you can fly to David on Air Panama for $245. Air Panama flies to David on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. We recommend you fly from San Jose to David since the border crossing experience is miserable.

    3. Check out Mexicana Airlines and Cheapoair.com fares to Panama.

Mexicana is a Mexican airline that flies to Panama via another Central American country. The flights leave late at night from the States but the fares are rock bottom. We have bought round trip tickets from the San Francisco bay area for as little as $500.00. Cheapo-air specializes in cheap fares using Central American airlines like Mexicana and Taca. You’ll find some good fares here.

    4. Fly Monday thru Thursday.

Airfares are lowest on those days so plan both to depart and return on those weeks days and you will get the lowest fare on regular airlines.

    5. Use Expedia or Vayama to find a cheap fare.

And remember it will be cheaper if you fly Monday-Thursday.

    6. Avoid coming to Panama from December 15th to January 6th. Fares are highest during the Christmas/New Year holidays. Mid December thru March which is the high season and the summer months June-August fares are also higher.

    7. Get a Retirement Visa in Panama and get a 25% discount on all international and domestic airfares.

If you are going to reside in Panama and are of retirement age ( in Panama that is 57 for a woman and 60 for a man) get a Retirement Visa. For this you need a lawyer and it will cost around $1000.00.

    8. Check Out Airline Websites for Seasonal Specials .

Delta, Continental, American and Copa offer some low rates during low season. Low season is April through October. When checking for prices on their sites, remember the lowest fares will be those with Monday through Thursday departure and return days.

    9. Visit Panama Free on a Stop Over Visit with Copa Airlines.

If you’re going somewhere else in the region via Panama on Copa, you can schedule a Panama vacation stop for free. Copa doesn’t charge for layovers in Panama.

Also, you can use your frequent flyer miles with Continental, Delta and Copa which all share the same frequent flyer program. Copa has the most direct flights to Panama- from New York, Newark, Los Angeles, Miami, Orlando and Washington D.C. Ask Copa or your travel agent for more details.

    10. Cheapest Flights to and from Europe

KLM has direct flights three times a week from Amsterdam and Iberia has direct flights three times a week from Madrid. These flights usually have the lowest fares. If you are in Panama neither airline has a customer service office so the only way to get a ticket is online or through a local travel agency. We recommend Fidanque Travel, tel: 265-5599.

    • Be a bit flexible with your dates

    Plane and simple

    • If you check in on time but are prevented from boarding as the plane is full, the airline must offer you financial compensation
    • If you’re delayed for more than five hours, the airline must offer you a full ticket refund

    Things to remember

Make sure your passport’s in date and find out whether you need a visa to go on hols – we don’t want any disappointed faces at the airport.

You’ll also want to triple check that you’re flying to the right airport because that could get pretty awkward.

A lot of airlines allow you to check in online so if this is an option, you might have time to grab a cheeky pint/burger/souvenir at the airport – treat yo’self!

Finally, give yourself plenty of time so you’re not dashing around before departure.

SOME USEFUL TIPS TO GET CHEAPEST AIRLINE TICKETS?

Tip #1: Make your airline tickets reservation early.

Many dirt cheap airline tickets require that you make a reservation 7, 14 or 21 days in advance, depending on the airline tickets. The best international airline tickets often require a reservation 30 days in advance. Making an airline tickets reservation as soon as you know your travel dates increases your chances of finding a cheap airline ticket.

Tip #2: Traveling on a weekday usually cheaper.

Flights departing on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday usually offer the lowest airline tickets. Cheap airline tickets are sometimes (but not always) higher on Monday and Friday than on other weekdays. Saturday flights occasionally have discount airline tickets, but as a rule it s more expensive to fly on a weekend than a weekday.

Tip #3: Stay over a Saturday night

Most dirt cheap airline tickets require that you stay over at least one Saturday night before your return flight. However, some airline tickets may only require you to stay a minimum of 3 or 4 days.

Tip #4: Again, make your flight reservation early!

Most of airlines sell only a limited number of airline tickets at the cheapest prices. When those airline tickets sell out, the price goes up!

    Tip #5: Consider nearby airports.

You may enjoy better savings if you are willing to fly into nearby airports. For example, when flying to Los Angeles (LAX), you may want to consider flying into the Burbank (BUR), Orange County (SNA) or Ontario (ONT) airports. Similarly, the cost of an airline ticket to San Francisco (SFO) might be reduced by flying into San Jose (SJC) or Oakland (OAK), while travel to Miami (MIA) may be less expensive if you fly into Ft. Lauderdale (FLL).

Tip #6: Try an earlier or later flight date. To get the lowest roundtrip airline ticket, the same airline tickets must be available on both the departing and return flights you select. If the fare is sold out on either of these, the price you end up with will be much higher. If possible, consider flying on another date.

Tip #7: Book your trip with Express Airline Tickets .com!

Not just a website we work for you 24/7! Express Airline Tickets .com offers multiple ways to search for travel, especially customized for your needs.

    How to find cheapest flights

    Updated November 2017

How to find cheapest flightsLeave it until the last minute and flight costs are often sky-high but plan ahead and book the right way and the savings can soar.

      How to find cheapest flights

Kayak* for a comparison incl baggage and payment fees. We argue within MSE Towers about the very top pick, but Kayak is Martin’s favourite, so it wins. Not only that, but it also allows you to filter options based on credit/debit card fees and whether or not you want to check in bags so you can compare costs more accurately.

    How to find cheapest flights

Skyscanner* for the very cheapest time to fly. Another MSE Towers favourite, Skyscanner gives you fare options spread over a month to find exactly when’s cheapest. It has particularly strong coverage of budget flights, searching over 1,200 airlines and travel sites in total.

    How to find cheapest flights

How to find cheapest flightsFlight brokers are essentially online travel agents.

    How to find cheapest flights

How to get the cheapest airline tickets

How to get the cheapest airline tickets

Sally | Edited by Steve N

    Updated November 2017

How to get the cheapest airline ticketsLeave it until the last minute and flight costs are often sky-high but plan ahead and book the right way and the savings can soar.

How to get the cheapest airline tickets

Kayak* for a comparison incl baggage and payment fees. We argue within MSE Towers about the very top pick, but Kayak is Martin’s favourite, so it wins. Not only that, but it also allows you to filter options based on credit/debit card fees and whether or not you want to check in bags so you can compare costs more accurately.

How to get the cheapest airline tickets

Skyscanner* for the very cheapest time to fly. Another MSE Towers favourite, Skyscanner gives you fare options spread over a month to find exactly when’s cheapest. It has particularly strong coverage of budget flights, searching over 1,200 airlines and travel sites in total.

How to get the cheapest airline tickets

How to get the cheapest airline ticketsFlight brokers are essentially online travel agents.

How to get the cheapest airline tickets

5 Games for the Road: How to Pass the Time With Nothing But Your Fellow Travelers for Entertainment

Subscribe to Our Under the Radar Newsletter

Your information will *never* be shared or sold to a 3rd party. Promise.

Bus and train trips, flights, delays in airports and train stations, hostels without TV or much light; the list of situations where a traveler has time to kill is long. That’s right — travel is not always exciting. There will be dull downtimes, and you may not always be able to read a good book. play road trip bingo, do crossword puzzles, or doodle in your journal .

That’s when you need a good repertoire of games to spontaneously play with your fellow travelers. Some will be popular games that you can find online and long-forgotten games from your childhood, and you might be surprised just how necessary they’ll be — and how much fun you’ll have — when you want to fill some of those inevitably empty hours on the road.

A quick confession: I’m a bit of a game geek anyway, and an English teacher to boot, so I’ve been known to start these games even at parties. But I promise that they have all been road tested on a real road, somewhere in Tunisia, Finland, Canada or Germany or any place where I was bored and without a book.

    #1 I Spy

You’ve probably all played I Spy a long time ago, but I recommend dredging it back up from your long-term memory. If you can’t, it starts off like this: “I spy, with my little eye, something beginning with A”, and the other players have to guess what object you can see. I’ve played this in hostels (especially those hostel living rooms that have trinkets from all over the world gathering dust there), on train rides and in planes, but it didn’t work too well in the desert. “I spy sand.”

How to play: I like to limit each person to three or four guesses. Otherwise, they’ll exhaust every item in the room that starts with “B” and you’ll soon run out of objects to use. I also like the jet lag variation — play it in a dark room at night when you can’t sleep because your body’s on some other clock, and see if you can actually remember what’s in the room around you.

    Mariano Kamp

    #2 Donna’s Alphabet Game

This is not the official name, but it’s the way I like to remember it after my old school friend Donna got a car load of us playing this on a stop-start motorway in southwest England. It’s simple, as long as you’re traveling on a road with signs (and even better, advertising) and these signs use our alphabet. Don’t try it in the western provinces of China, for example.

How to play: Logically, Donna’s Alphabet Game starts with A. Be the first person to spot the letter “A” in a sign and yell out the word: “A is in motorwAy!” Continue with B and get right through to Z. It sounds easy, but there will be a few tricky letters, and if you’re playing in a non-English speaking country then pronouncing the words will be a lot of fun, too. The way we play, there’s no winner — anybody can scream out the next letter when they see it — but natural competitiveness spurs everybody on anyway.

#3 Stadt, Land, Fluss: City, Country, River

This game has a German name because my German friends taught it to me — which is also perhaps why it always strikes me as being a bit intellectual, but still a lot of fun. It’s also a highly appropriate game for travelers to play because their geographical knowledge should be a bit better than average.

How to play: Choose three or four categories like the names of a city, country, river or lake. To be honest, I’m terrible with rivers so I always change the river category to something completely different — often food, because I like to talk about food. Take it in turns to challenge another player to think of a city, country and river all starting with a particular letter. If your friend challenges you with “D”, for example, you can win by getting out Dubai, Denmark and Danube in under sixty seconds — or whatever time limit you and your bored mates decide on.

Question Mark Art, Stuttgart Museum of Art -bast-

    #4 Twenty Questions

An oldie but a goodie, and you can make it topical by restricting the choice of “What am I?” to be something related to the region in which you’re traveling. I did have a friend, though, who would choose objects like “pyramid” while traveling through Egypt or “chocolate” in Switzerland, and then we could have made it just two questions rather than twenty.

How to play: Someone chooses an object, and everyone else asks them questions about it, but the only permitted answers are “Yes” or “No”. (Or in my rules, “irrelevant”, if I think saying yes or no will send the guessers along a completely wrong path I like to play fair!). If you’re playing with a group, whoever guesses the item correctly can choose the next word.

#5 For RTW Trippers: Kalgoorlie, Balladonia

I think it was my father who started this game when our family took a driving holiday across Australia. We were gone about two months and my sister and I, being about ten and twelve years old, needed a lot of entertainment.

How to play: This game only works with your traveling companions, and only on long trips. It’s more of a challenge than a game, but it always works for me. Simply start with the name of the town you stayed in first. On our trans-Australia trip, it was the gold mining town of Kalgoorlie. You then try to name every other town you’ve stayed in, in chronological order. My sister and I were experts at this all those years ago, but today I can only remember the first and second stops.

There are tons of other word and guessing games you can play in those bored moments of travel, and you can adapt these games with endless variations, too. And while it might seem like just a way to kill time, playing games like these is something I really love about traveling. It’s almost as if we don’t give ourselves permission to have that kind of fun if we’re at home in our “real lives”.

Anyway, I’m very keen to learn some new games, too, so leave your favorite travel game tips in the comments. I promise to road test them soon.
