The Secret to Getting a Ridiculously Cheap Thanksgiving Flight

Every travel agency is saying something different, but there are some tips that aren’t up for debate

For years, travel search engines have scoured through their dense databases to determine the best day to book your Thanksgiving flights. This year, like every year, there s a lot of mixed messages on what to do if you ve procrastinated on booking tickets. Here s what the big players are advising for cheap domestic U.S. air tickets:

  • Kayak : Book in early November, about two to four weeks before Thanksgiving.
  • Skyscanner : Two weeks prior to Thanksgiving.
  • Orbitz . This Wednesday, Thursday or Saturday. If not then, then before Nov. 18.
  • Cheapair . It depends on way too many things.

So what s the takeaway? It s better to be safe and book flights now, but you if you re a risk taker, you can wait until the beginning of November to book your flights. But try not to wait until the week of Thanksgiving. It s also important to weigh the risks of an unexpected fare hike in light of what your benefits of waiting actually are. These hyped savings are usually only about 5 to 10% less than the average fare, which amounts to $15 to $30 if your ticket costs $300.

In fact, since airline fares are notoriously difficult to understand. often the better question to ask is what not to do when you re booking Thanksgiving flights.

Here are a few tips that travel search engines all agree on:

Don t book a departure flight on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving (Nov. 26), or a return flight on the Sunday after Thanksgiving (Nov. 30).

Airfares increase as flights get fuller, and the Wednesday and Sunday flanking the Thanksgiving holiday are when the most people are traveling. A simple airfare search shows just how much more expensive it is to book travel on one of these days. In some cases, fares are up to twice as high.

If you have to book for Wednesday or Sunday, then book your tickets as early as possible.

If you re locked into a Wednesday departure flight, aim for a Friday or Tuesday return flight, which is around 25% cheaper than returning on Saturday, Sunday or Monday, according to an analysis by Cheapair.

Booking a return flight on Sunday results in the most dramatic airfare spike, and there s not really much you can do to save money other than to book your departure flight on Thanksgiving Day. But the tradeoff of sacrificing a chunk of your holiday is a discount of only about 10%, so it may make more sense to pick a different day even if it s Wednesday. In general, having a Sunday return flight means you re stuck with a sky-high ticket price.

Consider booking a departure flight or return flight on Thanksgiving Day or both.

If you depart and return on Thanksgiving Day, your fare may be up to 30% cheaper than the average price, according to Kayak. And even if you only depart (and not return) on Thanksgiving, those savings are particularly meaningful when applied to longer, more expensive flights. For example, flying the JFK-LAX route departing on Thanksgiving instead of the day before can save you nearly $100.

Don t book flights in groups.

If you re booking as a family and there are only a few flights left in the lowest fare category, it s possible the airline will bump the entire party up to the next fare category, according to Cheapair. That doesn t mean you can t travel as a family, though: you just might have to book each person s ticket individually.

Check other smaller airports nearby.

There s often regional and even international airports near the ORDs, JFKs and LAXs of major U.S. cities. If you re in Chicago, for example, consider Chicago Midway Airport instead of O Hare; if you re in Los Angeles, consider Long Beach Airport instead of LAX. Both are cheaper airports than their neighboring giants, according to Cheapflights.com, which ranked the nation s 101 most affordable airports.

Check smaller airlines.

The five biggest U.S. airlines American, United, Delta, Southwest and JetBlue all increased their base fares slightly despite lower fuel prices and a worldwide fear of Ebola. While the effect on consumers is not yet clear, it s also worth checking out smaller airlines like Spirit, Frontier and Virgin.

Thanks to the internet it’s never been easier to book a dream getaway or tailor a trip to one’s desires, but high costs can keep holidaymakers’ travel plans grounded.

One of the most agonising experiences is missing a deal on a flight or booking a ticket and seeing a lower price just days later.

There are a few tricks or secrets people can tap into to secure the lowest possible fare – especially those who plan ahead, are flexible with their travel dates or are willing to take a risk.

Those who are flying to an international destination should book 150 to 225 days in advance, a study found

Book at least eight weeks in advance

For domestic routes, the lowest fares are usually found 50 to 100 days before departure, with the absolute lowest fares found about 57 days prior, according to a study by Expedia and the Airlines Reporting Corporation (ARC).

Those who are flying an international route should plan even farther in advance – between 150 and 225 days – with the best deals around the 171-day mark, the study found.

A similar study by CheapAir found that the best time to book a domestic flight falls between 29 and 104 days in advance.

Still, airlines have been known to offer deals on airfare just a couple weeks before departure to fill a plane.

Some website, such as Kayak, allow users to receive a price alert when a fare drops.

Research suggests the lowest possible fares are typically found on Sundays and Tuesdays

Book on a Sunday or Tuesday

Research from ARC suggests that the lowest fares are found on Sundays and Tuesdays, regardless of the domestic or international destination.

Smart travellers will check prices every day of the week, as prices tend to fluctuate.

Experienced travellers know the cheapest flights tend to be early in the morning or late at night

Fly on off-peak days or at off-peak times

Those who are looking to jet abroad for an extended weekend will find the greatest savings if they fly out on a Thursday and return on a Monday.

Alternatively, people who depart on a Saturday and return on a Tuesday can save up to 25 per cent compared with booking a more expensive Sunday return.

FareCompare.com analysed thousands of flights in the US and Canada and determined the cheapest day of the week to fly is Wednesday.

Early risers and those who can sleep on a plane have an advantage, as the cheapest flights tend to be early in the morning or late at night.

And travelling at low season usually guarantees a better deal.

‘Hidden city’ fares involve a passenger booking a flight with a stopover and skipping the connecting flight

Find ‘hidden city’ fares

So-called ‘hidden city’ fares offer big savings and were mostly a secret until the website Skiplagged was sued by United Airlines and Orbitz last year.

A judge threw out the case, arguing it was filed in the wrong court, allowing founder Aktarer Zaman to continue to operate Skiplagged out of a New York City apartment.

It works like this: A passenger books a flight from Point A to Point B with a stopover at their desired destination, and doesn’t bother to board the connecting flight to Point B.

For example, someone looking to travel from New York to St Louis could save more than $60 if they booked a flight from New York to Chicago with a stopover in St Louis, as opposed to a direct flight.

United Airlines suing 22-year-old NYC man who figured out how to get cheaper plane tickets

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) A young computer whiz from New York City has launched a site to help people buy cheap plane tickets. But an airline company and its travel partner want to shut him down.

United Airlines and Orbitz filed a civil lawsuit last month against 22-year-old Aktarer Zaman, who founded the website Skiplagged.com last year.

The site helps travelers find cheap flights by using a strategy called “hidden city” ticketing.

The idea is that you buy an airline ticket that has a layover at your actual destination. Say you want to fly from New York to San Francisco – you actually book a flight from New York to Lake Tahoe with a layover in San Francisco and get off there, without bothering to take the last leg of the flight.

This travel strategy only works if you book a one-way flight with no checked bags (they would have landed in Lake Tahoe).

Skiplagged.com now has a banner on the top of the site with a donation fund to support the creator’s legal defense.

It’s not like these tickets are the cheapest all the time, but they often are.

In the lawsuit, United and Orbitz call Skiplagged “unfair competition” and allege that it is promoting “strictly prohibited” travel. They want to recoup $75,000 in lost revenue from Zaman.

Zaman said he knew a lawsuit was inevitable but he points out that there’s nothing illegal about his web site.

He also said he has made no profit via the website and that all he’s done is help travelers get the best prices by exposing an “inefficiency,” in airline prices that insiders have known about for decades.

“[Hidden city ticketing] have been around for a while, it just hasn’t been very accessible to consumers,” Zaman told CNNMoney.

Indeed, “hidden city,” ticketing is no secret among frequent fliers, said Michael Boyd, President of Boyd Group International, an aviation consulting firm in Evergreen, Co. Boyd worked as an American Airline ticket agent 30 years ago, and says he was trained at the airline to help customers find “hidden city” fares.

“I don’t think it’s illegal what he’s doing,” Boyd said. But lawsuits are expensive and it could end up costing the young entrepreneur who has irked the two billion dollar corporations.

Airlines usually offer cheaper fares for some destinations that are not regional hubs, Boyd said. Many of these flights are routed through more popular destinations. But if a lot of people take advantage of that discrepancy it could hurt the airlines, which is why they want to shut him down.

Born in Bangladesh, Zaman grew up in Brooklyn, N.Y. and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in computer science at age 20 from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He lives in Manhattan and works at a technology start-up that he declined to name.

Zaman said Skiplagged is just a “side project.”

Zaman and United declined to discuss the lawsuit. Orbitz said in a statement that it is obligated to uphold airline fare rules.

Other travel experts say that the airlines may not achieve much if Zaman’s site is shut down, especially in a world where information is becoming more readily available.

“If [Skiplagged is] shut down, undoubtedly there will be other people to come along to scrape fares and make them available,” said Robert Mann, president of R.W. Mann Company, an airline consulting firm in Port Washington, N.Y.

Hilton Scores a Victory Over Online Booking Sites, and What It Means for How Travel Will Be Booked

United Airlines used to offer last minute e-fares on their website, but stopped because they ran afoul of agreements with computer reservation systems to always display the best available fares through those sites.

Paying the computer reservation systems is costly, it s cheaper when airlines sell to you directly, so they used to offer bonus miles for doing so. And paying the online travel agencies is costlier still. Even though few airlines base commissions any longer (although Alitalia just re-introduced 1% commissions in Italy) they do pay based on volume.

Airlines have long paid less to the online travel sites than hotels. So hotels have gone to greater lengths than airlines in trying to get customers to book direct. Generally when you book on Expedia you still earn frequent flyer miles for your flights, and are eligible for elite status accrual and elite benefits. (Although it may not always be as clear what restrictions apply to the fares you re buying.)

Hotels on the other hand have:

  • Restricted points-earning (Hilton s official policy is no points at all, even for incidentals during your stay, when booking through a third party)
  • Restricted status-earning (major chains won t let your stay booked through most third parties count towards gaining or retaining status)

  • Restricted elite status benefits (Though Hyatt and Marriott generally honor elite status on third party bookings, other major chains do not)
  • During periods with hotel occupancy low, the OTAs had the greatest leverage. The major chain hotels were paying over 20% commissions, perhaps 25%, and independent hotels easily paid 40%.

    But those commissions have been falling. With hotels full they have a stronger bargaining hand. They re able to pay lower commissions, and negotiate other favorable terms.

    Hilton reports that it has successfully concluded better deals.

    [Hilton CEO Chris] Nassetta said Hilton Worldwide won the right to lower the commissions it pays to online travel agencies such as Expedia and Booking.com.

    Hilton Worldwide managed to eliminate last-room availability clauses and won the right to offer preferential pricing — lower rates than it gives to online travel agencies — to certain members of the hotel chain’s loyalty program, Nassetta said.

    “We are done with all of our OTA negotiations, and we achieved our goals in every one of those pillars,” Nassetta said.

    This likely explains Hilton testing discounts for HHonors members since they don t have to offer those same rates through online booking sites and can use those to incentive lower direct booking expenses.

    Airlines, too, continually squabble with the online sites and computer reservation systems over how their fares are distributed. Lufthansa is currently imposing an extra charge for tickets through these systems, which makes them less competitive. It s hard to sort out the effect it has had on the airline, because their sales have also been affected by strikes. Airlines want online travel sites to work through their own, less expensive, direct channels. And they want everyone selling their ancillary products, at the lowest cost to the carrier.

    When we see Expedia buy Orbitz after buying Travelocity we shouldn t just think of them as making consumer unfriendly moves, we should think of them as:

    1. Trying to preserve some of their leverage against travel providers who are eroding their margins.
  • Making defensive moves in anticipation of Google disrupting their business model.
  • That isn t to say that consolidation in the online booking industry is consumer-friendly. And consumer experiences vary. But online travel agency sites are hardly gaining market power .

    How to File an Emergency Bankruptcy Petition

    Sometimes you need to file for bankruptcy in a hurry. If you don’t have time to complete the lengthy bankruptcy paperwork, you can file a bare-bones petition, called an emergency bankruptcy or emergency petition. You then file the rest of the papers later.

    This article describes the minimum documents you need to file an emergency bankruptcy petition, and the circumstances that might make such a petition necessary.

    Emergency Circumstances

    It is almost never a good idea to file an emergency bankruptcy if you can avoid it. Bankruptcies are paper-intensive and bankruptcy law requires you to fully, accurately, and honestly disclose all of your assets, debts, income, expense and various financial information. Filing a petition also triggers various deadlines and “next steps.” If you file a bankruptcy too hastily, you may make mistakes that could cause you difficulty later, including the dismissal of your case or a denial of your bankruptcy discharge. There are even criminal penalties if the court finds you were intentionally evasive or less-than-truthful in your statements and paperwork.

    However, there may be circumstances where you have no choice but to file an emergency bankruptcy petition, usually as a way to prevent or stop the following:

    • the sale of your home through foreclosure
    • car repossessions
    • eviction
    • garnishments, and
    • lawsuits.

    Basic Requirements for an Emergency Petition

    Filing bankruptcy is not easy. An average bankruptcy filing can contain 50 or more pages of documents that list all of your assets, debts, income, expenses, and detailed statements concerning your financial history. Sometimes, however, you don’t have the time that it normally takes to complete all of the necessary paperwork. Here is a basic breakdown of the minimum that you must complete, sign, and file to start your bankruptcy case.

    Minimum Documents

    The following documents are the minimum that you must file to start your case. This is often called the skeleton petition:

    • The bankruptcy petition (Form B-1). This is the first three pages of the petition. If you are filing on your own, must include your telephone number on the petition.
    • Creditor Matrix. This is a list of the names and addresses of all your known creditors. Some courts may let you file it a few days later.
    • Statement of Social Security Number (Form B-21).
    • Certificate of Credit Counseling. If you did not receive credit counseling prior to filing, then you must file a motion to explain any exigent circumstances that kept you from obtaining the counseling. If you believe that you do not have to participate in consumer credit counseling, then you must file a motion requesting that you be exempt from this requirement.

    For a Chapter 13, you may also have to file a pay order that provides for estimated plan payments to your Chapter 13 trustee.

    Some bankruptcy courts may also have additional requirements, such as written disclosure statements or CDs that contain electronic copies of your documents.

    Since you are filing an emergency petition, the bankruptcy court clerk may not send notices to your creditors in time to stop an impending collection action. Therefore, you should immediately send notice of your bankruptcy filing directly to creditors that are, or might be, using collection actions against you.

    Filing Fee

    At the time that you file your skeleton petition, you must also pay the filing fee. In a Chapter 7, the filing fee is $335. The filing fee for a Chapter 13 is $310. If you cannot pay the fee, then you must file an Application to Pay Filing Fee in Installments. If you believe you are exempt from paying the fee, then you must file an Application to Waive Filing Fee.

    Filing the Rest of the Bankruptcy Forms and Documents

    Within the next 14 days, you must file the remaining paperwork, including all schedules and statement of financial affairs, as well as certain financial documents.

    Step 4: Take Continuing Education Courses and Renew Certification

    The BLS reported that health information technicians (which include certified coding technicians) need to regularly renew their certification and take continuing education classes. The AHIMA offers seminars, conferences and webinars that provide beneficial experiences for certified coding specialists and meet these requirements. CCSs and CCS-Ps must complete at least 30 continuing education units (CEUs) like these every certification cycle, as well as pay a renewal fee. CEUs are completed through college courses.

    Step 5: Consider Pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree

    Your credit report may be full of derogatories, such as charge-offs, collections, tax liens, or late payments, compounded with a history of foreclosure and bankruptcy. However, you may still get a loan for home purchase, refinance, or even cash out of your current home as long as you can meet the specific guidelines for loan approval by a multitude of lenders specialized in the credit-damaged borrower.

    Banking general industry guidelines help a lender to make a judgment on the borrower’s loan application. However, there are no hard-and-fast rules of separating the borrower on the border line between one credit category and another. Compromising variations between one lender to the next depends on the degree of subjectivity involved in underwriting and how much each lender wants to commit their funds.

    Obviously, the most common way to identify an ant infestation is by seeing them. If you spot large numbers of ants trailing to or from food sources in your home, you may have an infestation in or outside of your home. Additionally, you may hear soft rustling inside your walls as the carpenter ants move around to make their nest. Finally, keep an eye out for piles of wood shavings around your home this could be caused by their excavation as they build!

    How Can I Control An Ant Infestation?

    Your first step to battling an ant infestation in your home is to identify the species that s giving you trouble. Since different species have different habits and preferences, they may also require specific methods to control them. Pet food should also be sealed and not left out where ants can easily access it. Also, take out trash regularly to prevent the smell from drawing ants in as the garbage breaks down.
    • Dehydrate Ants need moisture to survive, so you ll want to minimize their access to it using a few simple tricks. First, fix any leaks you may have around pipes and other areas. Then, check your gutters and spouts to make sure they re draining away from the house. Finally, try implementing a dehumidifier to reduce other moisture inside your home.

    How Can I Get Rid of Ants?

    Ants can be a major source of distress for any property owner. Luckily, they can be dealt with in a number of ways. Once you ve taken steps to remove attractants and prevent ants from entering your home, you can apply a wide variety of TERRO products to eliminate them.

    Sending an unencrypted email is often likened to a postcard, in that anyone who wants to read it only has to take a look to see the contents. Obviously this isn t good, especially when you need to send personal information to someone else, such as your bank details. The way to get total privacy is to encrypt your email, and there are a number of ways to do that. We’ll explain them, and we’ll show you a supremely easy way to send an encrypted message that wills self-destruct after 30 seconds, just like in Mission Impossible.

    How to send encrypted emails: Using Gmail and Outlook settings

    Most of us use email because it s convenient and easy to retrieve from almost any electronic device we own. The thought then of up upping sticks and moving to a brand new, high-security service isn t exactly appealing. So it s good to know that there are some less drastic options open to users of Gmail and Outlook.

    Back in 2014 Google announced that it was making encryption in Gmail the default setting for all users. This means that so long as you are using the official Gmail apps or accessing Gmail through the Chrome browser then your email is already encrypted.

    But, and this is a big but, this only holds true if the person you re sending your messages to is also using Google apps. Once the email leaves the Google servers, say when you send it to your friend who uses Yahoo Mail, then the encryption is no longer applied, as otherwise the receiver wouldn t be able to read it. So while this is certainly a big step towards security, it does leave some rather large holes that could compromise your privacy.

    Then of course there is the issue that Google itself, or at least software created by the company, scans your emails for keywords so that it can serve ads that will be applicable to your interests. In many ways it s the price you pay for the free service. Google of course maintains that the content is never actually read by anyone, but if you are worried about the sanctity of the data it might be better to use a plugin such as Snapmail.co which we explore below.

    With the business world always in the mind of Microsoft, it s not surprising to find built-in features for encryption in Outlook for those with an Office365 subscription. Setting it up is a little more challenging though, but then that is often the trade off with any security feature. The first thing you ll need to do is exchange digital signatures with your recipient so that both of you will be able to unencrypt the messages. To create these you ll need to follow the Secure email messages by using a digital signature guide on the Microsoft site.

    With this accomplished you can write your email, then when you re ready to send it select Options More Options Message Options Security Settings Encrypt message contents and attachments.

    Sadly these features are not available on Outlook.com or in the new Mail app for Windows 10, as they are retricted to paid subscribers.

    How to send encrypted emails: Using a secure email provider

    If you want to ensure that your missives remain private then it s probably best to use a secure service rather than the normal mainstream offerings. There are a number of decent alternatives out there, with Tutanota, Ghostmail, and Protonmail all proving excellent options. At the moment you can have free accounts on these, although they do come with restrictions on usage in regards to the size of emails you can send and the storage available. Protonmail also has a waiting list for the free account, although when we joined recently the delay was only a couple of days.

    Secure services either require the recipient to also be a member of the platform, or to possess a password you give them to unlock each email. This might seem cumbersome when compared to the likes of Gmail, but is a necessary level of security that is very effective against hackers and government agencies.

    If you re happy to use an IM style of communication then Mega offer a secure chat feature as part of its free cloud storage package. Again your recipient would need to be a member, but as it doesn t cost anything and also affords you 50GB of storage, this might actually be quite enticing.

    How to send encrypted emails: Using temporary services such as Snapmail.co

    Another method is to use software that deletes the messages shortly after they ve been read. As an example for how one of these secure message service works we signed up to Snapmail, which allows users to send self-destructing text emails for Gmail . It all feels very James Bond, but is actually quite easy to get to grips with and involves almost no international villainy.

    The first thing to do, assuming of course you use Gmail, is to visit the Chrome web store and search for Snapmail. When you ve found it click the Add to Chrome button and the extension will be installed.

    Now click the three lines in the top right of the screen and from the drop down menu that appear select More tools Extensions, then scroll down until you find Snapmail and ensure that it is enabled.

    To send an encrypted email you ll need to launch Gmail, compose your message, then you ll notice that there is now a Snapmail next to the Send button at the bottom of the window. This means you can choose to only encrypt certain emails rather than every one, but remember that any sent by Snapmail will automatically be deleted. Click the Snapmail button to encrypt your message.

    When the email arrives in your recipient s inbox it s accompanied by the warning that it will self-destruct 60 seconds after they open it. Sadly there are no voice messages or puffs of smoke to add to the drama.

    It s worth contacting the recipient before you send the email, as the Snapmail one does look a little suspicious, requiring you to click on a link. Usually we d advise strongly against this as it s how most phishing attacks take place, fooling the user into clicking on a link to a false version of a website where you unwittingly enter your account details. But in this case it s actually helping you instead.

    Avoid America’s Busiest Airports

    The busiest airports in the US are LaGuardia in New York, O’Hare in Chicago, LAX in Los Angeles, and Hartsfield in Atlanta. These also are the most expensive airports to travel in and out of because they are where the biggest airlines fly.

    In practically every American city, there is a second or third airport nearby that is cheaper and often more convenient to use for your travel. For example, while Chicago is only the third biggest city, O’Hare International is one of the country’s busiest because of its location in the geographic center of the nation.

    However, most travelers don’t realize that Chicago has a second airport – Midway – which is not only smaller and less busy, but usually substantially cheaper. Plus, like O’Hare it has a rail link that leads directly into the city’s center.

    Similar cheaper, less busy airports can be found in other cities as well. Los Angeles is served by smaller airports in nearby Burbank and Orange County. Travelers to New York City can use Liberty International in Newark, New Jersey, which has commuter trains that lead into Manhattan.

    Use Search Engines in Disguise

    We all know that computers are super smart. That’s why when you use one of the most popular search engines to look up air fares you usually will be inundated with ads, emails, pop-ups and other marketing tools that try to scare you into booking your flight as quickly as possible.

    This is caused by the “cookies” that track your Internet searches and use this information to market specific products – in this case airline tickets – to you aggressively.

    The solution is simple: When searching for airfares and other travel deals, always use the private or incognito browsing modes. This will keep your identity a secret from marketers and advertisers so you can compare prices and find the right flights without having to worry about dealing with high pressure sales tactics and campaigns designed to scare you into buying a ticket right away.

    Fly Off-Peak Days and Hours

    Like any industry, airlines are driven by supply and demand. When demand is highest – such as before or after holidays, during business hours, and on weekends when people are more likely to travel – prices will always be higher.

    Don’t Fly At All

    In the US, flying is the most convenient way to get around, but it’s also the most expensive. If you aren’t traveling across the continent, you might consider a less costly mode of transportation.

    While inter-city rail in the US is still expensive and inconvenient, rental cars are cheap and plentiful. And there are still enough bus lines that can get you from Point A to Point B for very little money.

    How airlines price their tickets is a source of many myths and urban legends. These include tips about the best day of the week to buy a ticket, last-minute discounts offered by the airlines, and the conspiracy theories suggesting that the carriers use cookies to increase prices for their passengers. None of these is entirely true.

    Studies have suggested that prices can be higher or lower on a given day of the week – yet, there is no clear consensus on which day that is. Offered prices can in fact drop at any time before the flight, yet they are much more likely to increase than decrease over the last several weeks before departure. Further, the airlines prefer to wait for the last-minute business traveler who’s likely to pay full fare rather than sell the seat prematurely to a price-conscious traveler. And no, the airlines do not use cookies to manipulate fare quotes – adjusting their inventory for specific customers appears to be beyond their technical capabilities.

    What is true about pricing in the airline industry is that carriers use complex, sophisticated pricing systems. The airline’s per passenger cost is the lowest when the flight is full, so carriers have incentive to sell as many seats as possible. This is a race against time for an airline, and, of course, no company wants to discount its product more than it has to. Hence, the airlines face two somewhat contradictory goals: to maximise revenue by flying full planes and to sell as many full-fare seats as possible. This is known in the industry as yield or revenue management.

    Airlines and their bucket lists

    Here is how yield management works. For each flight or route (if we are talking about multi-segment itineraries), the airline has a set of available price levels – from the most expensive fully refundable fare to the cheapest, deeply discounted nonrefundable price. The industry jargon for these prices is “buckets.” Seats can be interpreted as balls that are allocated among these buckets.

    Initial allocation of seats among the price buckets is determined by historical data indicating how well a certain flight sells. For example, fewer deeply discounted seats will be offered on a flight on Thanksgiving week than on the same flight during the third week of February. As the seats on a flight sell, yield managers monitor and adjust the seat allocation. If, for instance, the sales are slower than expected, some of the seats might be moved to lower-priced buckets — this shows up as a price drop. As noted above, such price drops can occur at any time before the flight. However, the general trend of price quotes is upward, starting from about two to three weeks before the flight departure date.

    Of course, an average traveller wants to know when he or she should buy the tickets for the next trip. Another important question is where to buy this ticket. Airlines distribute their inventory on their own Web sites and on several computer distribution systems, meaning that prices can sometimes differ depending on where one looks for them. We are not entirely sure what precipitates this phenomenon – likely explanations include differences in contracts between the airlines and the distribution systems/travel agents, implying that different travel agents may not have access to the airline’s entire inventory of available prices.

    The airlines’ yield managers start looking at flight bookings about two months before the departure date. This implies that it generally does not pay to book more than two months in advance: Studies show that initially the airlines leave the cheapest price buckets empty, and yield managers may move some seats into those buckets if a couple of months before the departure date the flight is emptier than expected. From two months to about two to three weeks before the flight date, the fare quotes remain mostly flat, with a slight upward trend. However, and perhaps paradoxically, there is a good chance of a price drop during this period. We tend to monitor prices for several days – sometimes up to a week – hoping for a lower quote. It does not always pay off, but sometimes we do manage to save a considerable amount of money.

    Two to three weeks before the flight date, the price quotes start increasing. This is the time when business travellers start booking. While price drops are still possible, a chance of a price increase is much higher if you wait to book within this time period. This is also the time when one can find significant differences between price quotes, depending on where one looks and what contract they have with the airlines.

    Thus, if we book a trip earlier than three weeks before the flight date, we tend not to delay the purchase. At the same time, we check quotes from multiple travel agents, or go directly to a site that allows for a quick comparison of prices (such as kayak.com or skyscanner.net). Or check the airline itself.

    As for answering the original question we posed, here are some simple tips. First, if you have to travel during a peak period, such as Thanksgiving week, it is generally best not to delay buying that ticket. Otherwise, it might pay to monitor the offered prices for some time before committing. The best strategy for booking within the last couple of weeks before the flight, however, is not to delay the purchase, but to try getting quotes from several agents, which is easy to do in the Internet age.

    When you decide that you want to write an SNMP monitoring application for a given device you need to start by understanding whats available to you. If you have a MIB you can read through it to get a feel. If you have MIB documentation you have an even better leg up. Whether you have a MIB or not, the best way to start out is to walk the device asking the device agent for every value it can supply you. Given this output you can then know exactly what is being reported where and how you want to tackle it in code.

    The snmpwalk tool can walk the OID tree based on a starting OID or by default with no OID which just returns the MIB-II OIDs.

    Lets walk a device (APC UPS) and look at whats output using the snmpwalk command.

    A large amount of the output was removed for clarity, but you get the idea. We can see the System, Interfaces, and SNMP groups from the MIB-II standard in the example output.

    While the MIB-II information is interesting, unless your probing a basic router you’ll want a lot more information than is supplied. To get an extended idea of whats available we need to give the tool a starting OID from which to walk. To see everything we can supply the enterprise OID, since all OIDs will start from that root. This can be done both with and without a MIB. Without a MIB you’ll be forced to use a “best guess” approach to interpreting values. However if you do have a MIB the output is generally self explanatory and can serve as a reference when writing your application.

    Lets first walk without a MIB (there is a lot of output, I recommend redirecting output to a file):

    In this example we’re asking the snmpwalk tool to walk all OIDs starting from our base OID .1.3.6.1.4.1.318 (the fully qualified OID up to the vendor identification, which is 318 for APC). For this device I get a total of 308 OIDs returned. However, because all we have to judge the OIDs meaning by is the output this isn’t entirely helpful unless the OID value is a string.

    If we do have a vendor MIB we can use that to walk the device and get far more useful output:

    In this example we’re performing the same operation as before but we’re supplying a MIB to be used (the -m option) and instead of using the numeric representation of the APC enterprise prefix we can simply use the unique identifier “apc” instead to accomplish the same thing. In both cases I returned a total of 308 OIDs, but clearly the MIB assisted output is far more understandable.

    SNMP walking is the SNMP application developers equivalent to a port scan, providing a sound base on which to continue exploring and developing applications for your device. To avoid confusion it is recommended that all development begin by redirecting a full walk to a local file for reference.

    It pays to be as security-conscious as possible with online accounts. Here we show you how to get started with new Google safety measures to protect your email and documents.

    Millions of people have a Google account and this makes them a prime target for criminals hoping to sell your valuable personal information. It’s crucial that you have a strong password, and not one that’s easily guessed. Ideally, your password should contain a mixture of upper- and lower-case letters, numbers and punctuation.

    Passwords can still be broken with the right tools, though. Google is well aware of the threat and has introduced a second layer of security called 2-step verification. After enabling this extra security, you’ll need both your password and a unique code to log into your account. This code is sent to you in a text message or voicemail something that the hackers are extremely unlikely to be able to access. Read next. How to make Android look like a PC .

    Enabling 2-step verification

    To enable 2-step verification, sign in to your Google account from the usual web page it doesn’t matter which service you’re using as Gmail. Google Docs and YouTube all link to one account. At the top left-hand corner, enter your username and password and then click on My Account, which can be found in the menu that appears when you click on your name.

    On the left-hand side, within the Sign-in Security section you’ll be able to click on the right arrow, that will lead you into a separate section, where you’ll see the Signing in to Google option. If you scroll down, you’ll be able to see 2-step verification, with it being Off by default.

    Click Get Started to enable it; you may be asked to re-enter your password. Select the country in which your phone is registered and the number itself. Next, choose whether you want to receive the codes via text or voice message you can change this option later.

    It’s best to enter a mobile phone number rather than a landline or Skype number. Under no circumstances enter a GoogleTalk number as you’ll end up locking yourself out of your account as the code will be sent to Google Voice which is only accessible after you’ve logged in.

    Click the Try button and you should receive the code on your phone almost instantly. Enter this in the box and click Next. Finally, click Turn on 2-step verification and you’ll be taken back to the Account Settings page.

    You won’t be asked for a verification code for the next 30 days unless you log into your Google account on another computer or device. Remember that you may be asked to enter a verification code for each Google site you use. Only tick the Remember this computer for 30 days’ box if you have sole use of the computer or trust the other people who use it.

    Smartphones

    If you have a compatible smartphone, you can install Google’s Authenticator app. This generates codes so you don’t need a phone signal or data plan to receive a text or voice message. The app is available on Apple’s App Store and the Android Market. BlackBerry users should go to Google’s Mobile website to download and install the application.

    Bear in mind that you’ll still need to enrol your phone number as part of enabling 2-step verification to use Authenticator. Don’t forget to click on the relevant link on the settings page for your specific device type follow the instructions to link your handset to your Google account. You can also scan a QR code to authenticate the device.

    Once this process is complete, you can use your phone to quickly get a code whenever you’re asked as you sign into your Google account.

    Google is trying to make it easier to authorise logins with a single option, over a PIN to key-in. This update is slowly rolling out to all users.

    Application-specific passwords

    Not all Google services use verification codes, so you’ll need what Google calls application-specific passwords to log into certain ones. For example, Google Calendar, GoogleTalk, Picasa (now discontinued) and Sync all require a special password in addition to your normal password. These services will provide a link to generate an application-specific password, or you can browse directly to the Authorising applications sites’ page which is in the Security section of your Google account settings.

    Simply enter the name of the application and click the Generate password button and copy the text that appears and paste it into the box of the application asking for it. It doesn’t matter about the spaces: these are ignored. You won’t have to memorise or write this password down as it can be used only once you’ll only need to generate a new one when you first use an application or site that you haven’t already signed into using 2-step verification. If you need to, you can revoke access to one of these applications by clicking the link next to the program in question in the list at the bottom of the page.

    Occasionally, it won’t be obvious that you need an application-specific password. For example, if you try and configure Gmail on an iPhone it will appear as if your usual password is incorrect as you’ll be unable to log in. What you need to do is generate another application-specific password and type it in when you see the password incorrect’ message to verify your account on the device. This is because application-specific passwords replace traditional passwords rather than complementing them.

    Extra precautions

    Although 2-step verification makes your account almost impossible to hack, it can also prevent you from logging in if you lose your phone and can’t get codes. For this reason, you should enter a backup phone number on the settings page and also print some backup codes. You can carry the latter with you to ensure that you can always log in even if you can’t use your phone for any reason.

    If you want to disable 2-step verification you can do so on the settings page. You’ll be asked to enter your usual Google password and possibly a verification code. Click Turn off 2-step verification and then confirm the action in the pop-up window that appears. Be sure to revoke all application-specific passwords as well to return to using standard passwords with other services that don’t use 2-step verification.

    The contraction of the airline industry means that most flights fly almost full and airlines have largely rolled back programs that allow you to jump on a cheap flight at the last minute. Despite capacity cuts, you can still find an airline or two that gives you a chance to get where you want to go affordably with little notice and strategies on how to fly standby with your existing cheap ticket.

    Step 1

    Pack everything you plan to take in a carryon bag or small daypack so that you receive priority among the standby candidates, as checked baggage creates more snags for the airline.

    Step 2

    Target flights earlier than your confirmed reservation if you already hold a cheap ticket. That way, you can fly using your confirmed reservation if you don’t get on an earlier flight.

    Step 3

The program, called Air Tran U, allows young adults to fly on standby for $49 to $99 each way not including fees.

    Ask your airline about relaxed standby rules if an impending blizzard is predicted for your departure city. Airlines, such as Southwest, USAir and Airtran, that take passengers from the Midwest and Northeast to Florida winter getaways may allow you to leave the night before based on your ticket for travel on the day the blizzard arrives; they make the policy decision in the late afternoon. Discuss this option with a customer service representative at the airline’s toll-free number.

    Travel to the airport as early as you can to get on a flight. Proceed to the gate and request to be placed on the standby list. Stay by the gate listening for your name or look for it listed on a gate display and reconfirm that you are on the list as boarding begins if you have been overlooked.

    Bath is a small city about 115 miles west of London. The town sits over natural mineral springs, which have been a destination for health and relaxation since the time of the Roman occupation of England. Roman ruins surround one of the hot springs in the city center, and are open to the public as a museum and educational center. Today the city is full of beautiful period architecture and remains a major tourist destination in England. Traveling there is relatively easy, as the city is not far from a major motorway and has regular train service from London.

    Step 1

    Take the train. Bath is only about 10 miles east of Bristol, a larger city and a major train stop. Numerous trains from all directions stop in Bath, including regular trains from London. Trains from London depart Paddington Station for Bath every half-hour during the day. Trips from London take about 90 minutes, and from Bristol about 15 minutes.

    Step 2

    Drive to Bath. From London, the trip to Bath is about a two-hour drive. Bath is just south of the east-west running M4 motorway. Additionally, it’s only about 15 miles east of the M5 motorway, which runs into Birmingham, 100 miles to the north.

    Fly into Bristol. Bristol’s airport is about 20 miles west of Bath. The airport accepts flights from most major cities in Europe, a few in North Africa and, as of 2011, one flight from the United States. Regular connecting flights from London make it easily accessible from all over the world. Taxis and buses are available for transportation from the airport to Bath, and the Bristol rail station is only eight miles away from the airport.

    Ride the bus. National Express buses depart Victoria Station in London for Bath every 90 minutes. The trip via coach takes just under four hours. Additionally, buses leave from Bristol regularly and take about 40 minutes to get to Bath. Travelers from other parts of the U.K. can transfer to a Bath-bound bus in either London or Bristol.

Provide the airline with the information about your situation so they can determine your options. Since airline policies and individual tickets change so often, the only real way to know what will happen with your ticket is to directly contact the airline.

    Cancel your reservation, if you were not able to transfer your ticket through your airline’s customer service department. In most cases, you’ll pay a fee of about $100 to $150 to cancel your ticket, and the airline will issue you a credit for the remaining balance on the ticket.

    If you re looking for a job that combines sales, customer service, and logistics, then a career as a travel agent might be right for you. Travel agents take care of all the planning associated with vacations or business trips, such as transportation, lodging, dining and entertainment plans.

    There are different kinds of travel agents, and training for the job differs depending on where an agent chooses to work. If you re considering a career in this field, you may want to know what your potential responsibilities will be, where you might find work, and what qualifications you ll need to get a job.

    What travel agents do

    Travel agents primarily work in sales. They sell transportation, lodging and admission to entertainment activities to individuals and groups who are planning trips. Travel agents are also called upon to give advice on destinations, itineraries and other choices associated with planning a vacation or business trip.

    It is imperative that travel agents be good communicators who can determine what clients want and need. They must keep in mind customers budgets and preferences when planning and arranging schedules and activities.

    Travel agents must also have excellent computer literacy and research skills, as much of their time is spent online researching destinations and booking reservations.

    According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook. a growing number of travel agents focus on a specific type of travel, such as adventure tours, or specialize in planning trips for a particular group of people, like senior citizens or couples with children. Other agents may choose to work predominately with the employees of corporations or for companies that sell tours and travel services.

    Where travel agents work

    Most travel agents are employed full-time by travel agencies, hotels, tour companies or other companies in the travel arrangement and reservation service industry. About 14 percent of travel agents in the United States were self-employed as of 2010, according to the Occupational Outlook Handbook.

    The median annual wage for travel agents was $31,870 in 2010, with the top 10 percent of agents earning more than $50,620 a year. Some travel agents work more often during peak travel seasons, such as holidays, and must be available to accommodate customers last-minute schedule changes.

    Becoming a travel agent

    Typically, a high school diploma is required for work as a travel agent, and some employers prefer to hire agents who have received formal training in a field related to the travel industry. However, almost all employees offer at least some on-the-job training for new agents.

    Classes in professional travel planning are offered at many community colleges, vocational schools and industry associations. Such courses usually focus on reservation systems, international travel regulations, sales and marketing. Degree programs in travel and tourism are also offered at some colleges and universities.

    Some states require that independent agents possess a business license in order to sell travel services. To see if your state requires such a license, contact the state licensing agency.

    While no formal certification is necessary for travel agents, those who wish to advance their careers may want to obtain a certificate from training institutes, such as the International Airline Transport Association s Training and Development Institute or the Travel Institute .

    Here are a few complications that may occur if you take the 18.36 Regionale Veloce on a Sunday evening from Verona (Porta Vescovo) to Milan (Centrale). Your underlying problem is that this is a small station where the fast through trains from Venice to Milan don t stop.

    You could get a local to Verona Porta Nuova, the main station on the other side of town and then a fast Frecciabianca; but if some delay hardly unusual prevents you from making your connection, you ll be left holding a ticket that is valid only for that one reserved-seats-only train. Not good.

    Or you could go to Verona and wait for another regionale. However, the westbound Milan departures seem timed to depart just seconds before your train arrives from the east. You ll be caught waiting nearly an hour.

    Given this situation, you feel rather grateful that there are still four slower trains a day from Venice right through to Milan, stopping in Verona Porta Vescovo. Regionale Veloce, means fast regional, but is actually a slow train. Let s say, the faster of the slower trains. On which you can t reserve a seat even if you want to.

    It costs 11.55 (£10) to go 150km in just under two hours. A giveaway by British standards. The Italians still have the concept of social pricing, even if their rail system is monstrously in debt. The Frecciabianca costs 23 (£19.50). This could be why the regionale, when it arrives, is so grotesquely packed.

    Overlapping coverage

    Almost $2 billion in travel insurance is sold each year for several what ifs: You need to cancel a trip because of illness, the death of a relative, or bad weather; your belongings are lost or stolen; your traveling companion dies; or you need emergency medical care. Premiums depend on the age of the travelers, the type of coverage, and the trip’s cost. For a standard policy you’ll pay about 5 to 7 percent of the cost of the trip, according to the Insurance Information Institute. Tour operators, cruise-line reps, and travel agents sell two-thirds of the travel policies, and they collect commission on them.

    But coverage may be unnecessary if you already have protection through homeowners, auto, life, or health insurance. Credit-card benefits and consumer-protection laws also may help. Bob Hunter, director of insurance at the Consumer Federation of America, says travel insurance is often not worth the price. “Don’t buy insurance that covers small, manageable losses or only a slice of risk,” he says.

    For example, losing some of your belongings won’t break you financially, so keep a close eye on your valuables and be ready to accept losing less-valuable stuff. Still losing sleep? Narrow in on what you’re worried about, and see if your insurance or credit cards cover you. Then be flexible. “If you’re worried about dying in a plane crash,” Hunter says, “you should get term life insurance rather than flight insurance, because you might die in a car crash.”

    If you’ll be traveling overseas, your health insurance might not provide coverage should you need to see a doctor or be evacuated to a hospital, the insurance institute says. Medicare generally doesn’t cover health-care expenses outside the U.S. although some Medigap policies do. So you might want to consider a medical travel-insurance policy.

    In tough economic times, businesses are always seeking new ways to reduce costs, and travel budgets are often one of the first areas to come under scrutiny. One way to save money without sacrificing necessary travel or the traveler’s quality of life on the road is through the deployment of a corporate travel management program. While most large corporations have such programs in place, many smaller businesses don’t and could benefit greatly by implementing one.

    “A corporate travel program allows corporations to achieve transparency and accountability of one of their significant expenses,” says Ellina Arakelova, the travel operations manager for Align Technology, the makers of Invisalign, clear aligners for straightening teeth. “A well-managed corporate travel program ensures better corporate and financial discipline and improves the traveler experience,” adds Arakelova, who was hired to implement a corporate travel management program for Align.

    Based in Santa Clara, Calif. Align Technology, Inc. has 1,400 employees worldwide and earned just over $300 million in revenues last year. When Arakelova joined the company in October 2007, there was no formal travel management program in place and no one dedicated to managing the company’s travel. Align had a relationship with a travel management company (TMC) and a corporate credit card, but use of these was not mandatory and employees routinely booked travel on public websites, making it impossible to track expenditures. “There was no pre-trip visibility and very limited opportunity to correctly reconcile travel spend,” says Arakelova.

    Today Align’s corporate travel management program covers all trips originating in North America and will soon extend to its offices worldwide. Arakelova currently has 500 travelers in her database. Here are some of her steps for implementing a successful corporate travel policy.

    Make a plan and keep it comprehensible. As a certified travel manager, Arakelova built and managed a corporate travel program at her previous job, so she knew just what to do when she joined Align. The existing travel policy was extremely broad and not enforced, according to Arakelova.

    Arakelova worked with her finance department to construct the new travel policy. She wanted a terse, easy to understand policy, putting procedures and other frequently changing information in appendices for updating without altering the underlying travel policy.

    Arakelova wanted to consolidate all travel operations though a single TMC and online booking tool. The new travel policy would mandate the use of these entities as well as the corporate credit card, and preferred travel vendors.

    Get buy-in from all departments. To bring the rest of the company on board, Arakelova developed a business plan and financial proposal detailing the projected cost savings through a managed corporate travel program. “We did quite a lot of internal marketing and presentations, and got support from the upper management and the employees as well,” she says.

    Find a travel management company. Next Arakelova developed a request for proposal (RFP) to evaluate or benchmark each travel management company. Arakelova sent the RFP to several contestants and selected Carlson Wagonlit Travel because they offered the best package of services, costs, travel reporting and supported technologies. “Going with Carlson I could implement any online booking tool,” says Arakelova. Carlson also provided web space for a customized Align travel portal and the use of their corporate hotel directory. That was a huge asset for Align because their customers are scattered across the country. Arakelova saw the reporting tools offered by her RFP respondents as an integral component of the corporate travel program. “Financial visibility and travel data analysis are key to program success”, says Arakelova.

    Implement an online booking tool. From her previous experience Arakelova believed it was crucial for travelers to use an online booking tool to bring costs down and manage data. Arakelova chose Concur Cliqbook Travel as her online booking tool because it has a user-friendly interface. In addition, Arakelova was able to build the travel policy, approval process and preferred vendors into Cliqbook. She says Cliqbook also provides excellent policy compliance enforcement and is easy to administer.

    Ensure effective communication. The travel portal is a critical component of Arakelova’s travel management program. The portal consolidates all travel-related information and is accessible to all Align employees. “Effective travel communication channels are one of the most important parts of the travel program,” says Arakelova. The portal contains the policy and procedures, access to Cliqbook or an agent-assisted booking process, training materials, insurance information, the preferred vendor list, travel alerts, and destination news. Arakelova also uses internal company publications for flash news and important announcements.

    Train your travelers. Training and education are also critical components in getting employees to understand the need for travel policy compliance and learn how to book through the new system. “We can implement the best technology, but if the traveler is not educated in how to use it, the travel program is useless,” says Arakelova. To educate employees Arakelova conducts live Web-based training sessions and has made travel training part of new-hire orientation. Arakelova also plans to video record the training session, so employees can access it any time through the travel portal.

    Keep improving. It took Arakelova less than six months to implement her new corporate travel management program. She subsequently added the Concur expense reporting module and a new product called Ride Charge which allows employees to book ground transportation online. “Cliqbook constantly develops new features,” says Arakelova. “It is the responsibility of the travel manager to be well educated on technology innovations and communicate new features to users,” she adds. Arakelova also plans to add group and meetings booking capabilities and will extend the program internationally to Align’s global locations.

    Show results. An impressive 78% of Align travelers now initiate bookings through Cliqbook with greater than 98% corporate travel policy compliance. More importantly, Align’s overall travel operations realized a 56% reduction in management costs, a 25% reduction in average airfare, and a 35% reduction in average car rental costs.

This not only gives you the benefit of choosing from flights that ensure you’ll arrive at the port on time, but when you book directly, the cruise line will assist you in the event that you have a travel delay or problem.

    Step 1

    Visit the website for the cruise line you wish you travel on, or an online travel booking site. Click on the link to book a cruise.

    Step 2

    Indicate the cruise you want to take by choosing from the option menu; in most cases, you’ll need to choose a cruise destination, the month you want to travel and your departure port. Click search to find cruises.

    Becoming a travel agent is appealing to many people. Travel agents often enjoy the benefits of free or deeply discounted travel so they can research and learn about new destinations to help clients plan their dream trips. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than 105,000 travel agents currently work in the country, and the job outlook will remain steady for the next decade. The state of Florida offers unique opportunities for travel agents due to its heavy tourist industry. While Florida does not require a travel agency license, it does have travel agent registry requirements that exceed the requirements of most other states.

    Develop the skills you will need to become a successful travel agent. Computer skills, for one, are an absolute necessity for booking travel, researching destinations and working with agencies’ tools and computer programs. Also, travel as much as you can. Firsthand knowledge of destinations will be helpful to guiding your clients.

    Gain experience in the travel industry. The field is competitive, so any special experience you have will be a plus. Consider working in the travel industry at a hotel or for an airline to gain knowledge of how these companies run. Take a course for travel agents, such as those endorsed by the American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA), which are listed on its website. Or consider a class in the travel industry at your local community college. The Internet offers many courses, as well, most of which are reputable. But, beware of online scams or pyramid schemes disguised as training programs.

    Find a job working for a travel agency. Some agencies have office space and set hours, while others’ employees are more independent. It may be beneficial for your first job to be in an office where more experienced agents can act as mentors. However, you may prefer the flexibility of being an independent employee of a work-from-home agency. Keep an up-to-date resume and be prepared to highlight your travel-related experience and customer service skills in an interview.

    Register with the state of Florida. The Florida Department of Consumer Affairs requires individuals who sell travel-related services to register annually. This includes those who own a travel agency or who are employed by one. Independent sales agents are exempt from providing proof of assurance. The registration may be completed on the department’s website by filling out the form for independent sales agents and paying the $50 filing fee. You are required to renew the registration annually.

    Customize your skills to set yourself apart from the competition. More and more travelers are able to book routine travel online or by working directly through vacation companies. A travel agent who finds a niche in an area of travel people in which people need specialized expertise can still be very successful. Some examples of areas of specialty are luxury travel, exotic countries, honeymoons and senior travel.

    Sometimes planning a vacation is as fun as taking the vacation. But sometimes you want someone else to do all the work for you and just book a vacation package. Because, let’s face it, sorting through hotels, itineraries, and flights can be a daunting task when you just want to get away. Plus, you can often find better deals when you book a package.     Personally, I’ve booked multiple cheap vacation packages over the years. One time, I went to Toronto, Canada for a last-minute long weekend where we stayed in a 3-star hotel and got a nonstop, round-trip plane ticket for $300 less than the cost of any multi-stop ticket without the hotel.

    Another time, I traveled to Vienna, Austria for a week by booking a cheap vacation package we stayed in a fancy 4-star hotel (they had a bowl of free mini-Toblerone chocolates in the lobby!) and got flights on a stellar foreign airline for about $500.

    Perhaps the best deal of all the vacation packages I’ve purchased was a round-trip ticket to Hurghada, Egypt (a resort town on the red sea) plus a week in a 3-star resort, with two meals a day for $330.

    How did I do this? Here are my cardinal rules for how to book a cheap vacation package, followed by an easy three-step process.

    Tips for Booking a Cheap Vacation Package

    For the greatest savings on your vacation package, use these nine tips to guide you through the booking process.

    1. Be Flexible on Place

    You’re going to get the cheapest vacation package if you are completely open to any destination. I recommend either choosing an activity that you’re looking for (e.g. beach, skiing, museums) or a general destination (e.g. Europe or South America) and then looking for vacation packages that meet this more general criteria. When you’re more flexible on place, you’re going to get a better deal. (See also: Affordable International Vacation Destinations )

    2. Plan Far in Advance or Book Last Minute

    The best vacation deals I’ve found have always been last-minute trips. However, my trip to Vienna was planned about nine months in advance. You are best off planning more than three months in advance (four for summer travel) or less than two weeks. Planning a trip in only two weeks may sound scary but you can block off the dates now and choose the destination later!

    3. Be Flexible on Time

    Just like with flexibility on destination, travelers who are flexible with when they go are going to get better deals. Time includes days that you travel, how long you stay, and even time of day for flights. The more flexibility you have, the cheaper vacation package you’ll snag. (If you’re unsure of how to search based on flexibility, start by checking out my favorite search engines for flexible travel .)

    4. Be Flexible on Amenities

    Most vacation packages typically include flights and hotel. Some also include a rental car, admission passes to a nearby attraction, or all-inclusive meals. It’s best to be flexible on the amenities you want you can always opt to not use the tickets or to find a rental car on your own.

    5. Bring a Friend (or Two)

    The majority of vacation packages are priced per person for two people. If you are traveling by yourself, you’ll likely see a surcharge. Some packages charge less per person when there are three or four people all booking together (usually sharing one room).

    6. Know That You Can Extend Your Dates

    A vacation package frequently has certain dates or number of days set in stone. For example, a long weekend package might begin on a Friday and go until Monday. Don’t feel confined by these dates many of the vacation packages will allow you to extend the dates for several more dollars. And if they won’t let you extend your trip, consider finding your own way home. One time, for example, a vacation package I found was such a good deal that I booked it, but I wasn’t able to extend the trip through the company. So once at my destination I found different lodging for the duration of the trip and bought a one-way ticket home. (See also: Hotels vs. Hostels )

    7. Travel From a Major Airport Hub

    The best vacation packages are priced from major airport hubs like LA, NYC, DC, and Chicago. Some companies will only let you book from these hubs. Other companies will add a surcharge for smaller airports. If you’re getting a surcharge added for your airport, consider booking this flight separately by checking to see if you could get a better price on your own. Just be forewarned that if something goes wrong with your first flight to the hub, you may be left in a lurch. So plan to arrive extra early or buy travel insurance.

    8. Travel From a Foreign Country

    The $330 steal to Egypt that I snagged? That was flying round-trip from Moscow. (Hurghada happens to be a hotspot for Russians.) When I traveled in Germany I noticed some amazing prices on vacation packages to foreign countries. So, if you’re lucky enough to have the flexibility to spend more time traveling once you get to your first foreign destination, head to a travel agency and ask where the best vacation packages are to determine your next stop.

    9. Splurge: Spend the Money to Upgrade

    Usually with vacation packages, you’ll have a cheaper option for the package, then you’ll be given an option to upgrade to a fancier hotel. If you upgrade, you’ll get a much better hotel in a much better location. Every time I’ve upgraded, it’s been more than worth the cost (e.g. the Toblerone hotel in Vienna). And every time I’ve passed I’ve regretted it. (The Egypt hotel had a barely functioning shower. For $50 more we could have stayed at a 5-star resort with swimming pools with swim-up bars. But at the time we had little money and didn’t see the value of the better hotel until we arrived.) (See also: How to Negotiate Your Hotel Deal )

    How to Find a Cheap Vacation Package in Three Steps

    Now that you know the tips, you’re ready to start actually searching for a vacation package.

    1. Make Some Decisions

    First, look through the tips above and make some decisions about dates, places, people, budget, etc. As I mentioned, the more flexible you are the cheaper vacation package you’ll get; but note that you’ll also spend more time searching for packages.

    2. Determine What’s a Good Deal

    Before you know that you’re getting a cheap vacation package, you need to get a baseline price to compare the vacation package to. I recommend choosing you favorite travel search engine (I like Kayak ) and entering a flexible date search for your city to the location you’re considering and first get a baseline sense of what airline tickets cost. Next, use the search engine’s hotel function and see the approximate cost of a hotel for a stay of your length. For instance, if the cheapest fares you are finding are $500, and the hotel for a week’s stay is $600, you’ll know that a vacation package that’s less than $1100 is a good deal.

    3. Search and Book

    • Go-today has the easiest browsing and good deals for travel abroad. (I’ve used Go-today for several trips that have been outstanding.)
  • Priceline allows you to be flexible on location just look under the theme vacation ideas box. (Here’s a good post with general Priceline Bidding Tips that will help you further understand the Priceline process.)
  • CheapTickets similarly has packages based on theme and destination.
  • For All Packages

    • Pick up the travel section of your local paper as some of the best deals on packages from your local airport will be listed in your local paper with a local travel agent.
  • Try Groupon Getaways. Groupon for travel is new, and I haven’t tried it, but based on what I’ve seen there are some great deals through a partnership with Expedia.
  • Finally, the traditional online travel agencies Orbitz. Expedia. and Travelocity all have good deals, though the sites are easier to navigate if you have a set location and dates.

    However a lot of times to take these kinds of vacations it requires buying airline tickets in order to get to your destination.  In this article I m going to share what I ve done to score dirt cheap airline tickets.

    Start Looking Ahead Of Time

    The first thing I always do is look ahead of time.  In fact you can start looking for really cheap airline tickets 330 days ahead of time.  Now I know what your thinking, I m not going to buy my airline tickets that early,  and I m not telling you to.

    What I like to do is once I roughly know the time I m going to take the trip is look up the current going rates for the tickets and make a mental note of the price.  Then every couple of days I will keep checking the price.  What this does for me is it allows me to know what is a dirt cheap airline ticket and what s not.

    I once flew to Los Angles from Ohio and it was going to run around $280 round trip but I knew if I could get the tickets for anything less than that it would be a deal and I ended up finding some for around $240 because  I would relentlessly check ticket prices .  That s what knowing your ticket value can help you do.

    The Day You Fly

    The next thing you need to look at is the day you will fly out.  This can make a big difference in the cost you will pay for a ticket.  In fact the two cheapest days to fly out are Tuesday and Wednesday typically.

    To prove my point I was recently helping a close relative find an airline ticket who was flying from Ohio to North Carolina.  The cost for her to fly on the weekend was around $205, the cost for her to fly on a Tuesday was $150.  So in this case it s obvious that it would be better wait a few more days to save $55.

    The Time Of The Year

    Third, as important as the day is concerned the time of the year you leave is  also very important.  However this a lot of times also depends on the destination.

    For example, if wanted to take a trip to a place in the Caribbean and you were leaving in February you would likely pay more for your ticket.  On the other hand if you left in September during the peak of hurricane season you would likely get some great dirt cheap tickets.

    Stand By

    The next option you should consider is stand by.  This is an option that airlines will offer when you re traveling because their flight may be overbooked or to heavy.  Airlines will then usually ask people if they would like to fly stand by and a lot of times offer a free ticket option which will allow you to fly anywhere in the continental United State.

    However a lot of times these tickets are only good for one year and may have some restriction like stand by only.  To get these deals ahead of time contact the airline you are flying on ask if their is any stand by option available.

    Get Rewards

    Finally the last option is to get an airline miles reward credit card, like the Capital One Venture Rewards credit card.  These cards work great if you want to cut down on ticket prices and fly for really cheap.

    With the Venture card you will get double miles on every purchase you make every day.  They will give you 10,000 bonus miles when you spend a thousand buck in the first three months, and best of all you can fly free with no blackout dates anywhere you want to go. That sounds like a great deal.

    In fact a few people I know will actually charge as many of their monthly expenses they can to this credit card to build up enough miles to fly literally for free every time they go some place.

    As the industry continues to consolidate and more people turn to the Internet to make their own travel arrangements, the need for education for travel agents becomes more urgent. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, most travel agent jobs do not require more than a high school education, but travel agencies are increasingly seeking a college degree in addition to business and travel experience.

    Trade Schools

    A certificate from a travel trade school such as the Travel Academy can be earned in about eight to 16 weeks, depending on the number of hours a student devotes to classes. Intense training through trade schools focuses on the hands-on skills needed to work in the field. A curriculum that prepares a travel agent to work in an agency includes instruction on airport codes and airport gate procedures, cruise line operations, geography, tour companies, and how to use various computer reservations systems.

    College

    While a degree from a trade school can help a travel agent land an entry-level position, a college degree can provide travel agents with a leg up on the competition for the more favorable jobs. Bachelor’s degrees that travel agencies consider appropriate include business, marketing, communications or hospitality. Other degrees that could open the door to travel industry options include business administration, accounting, human resources and management.

    Additional Skills

    Many travel agencies place importance on the ability to speak several languages. Travel agents who learn French or Spanish can find additional opportunities. Travel agents, both new and experienced, can start their own business by simply paying a fee to a number of large travel agencies that use independent agents. Contract agents can start immediately by using the large reservation capabilities of these companies.

    Experience

    Experience counts in the travel industry. Most established travel agencies require new agents to have two to five years experience. This experience can be gained from working directly for a travel provider such as a cruise line or airline, in support positions at large travel companies, and in hotels and car rental companies.

    Certificates

    Time spent in professional development courses and training can add further credentials to help agents land a position. The National Business Travel Association offers a program for agents to earn a Certified Corporate Travel Executive designation in fewer than 30 days of classes. A two-day workshop is required to receive the Corporate Travel Expert certification,and a Global Leadership Professional designation can be earned in two years, ideal for working professionals looking for management opportunities.

    The sight of flustered air travelers digging madly through their belongings for an elusive ticket has become rare at airports in recent years. That’s because more people are relying on electronic tickets, or e-tickets, when they fly.

    An e-ticket carries the same information as a paper ticket. The major difference is an e-ticket is located in an airline’s computer database, instead of the passenger’s suitcase. It is an electronic record of the traveler’s airline reservation, containing information such as the time, date and place of the flight, airport, seat assignment and travel class. At the gate, e-ticket passengers need only show a valid photo identification card such as a driver’s license to claim their spot on the aircraft. Once the airline confirms the traveler’s information, it issues a boarding pass that the traveler uses to board the plane.

    Traditional travel companies, such as airlines or travel agencies, can assist travelers with obtaining e-tickets. But improving Internet technology also allows passengers to book their flights on their own. In fact, the passenger who uses this self-serve option may not even come into contact with the airline until arriving at the airport and presenting his ID.

    To issue e-tickets, airlines must have a database that is integrated with an airline’s passenger service system. That is then connected to all other partners — airlines, airports, ground transportation and travel agencies, for instance — to share real time information.

    To book themselves on a flight, travelers can visit any number of Web-based ticketing sites. Once there, they can view the options available and use a credit or debit card to pay for their ticket. After placing the order, the electronic record of the ticket goes into the airline’s database, where it holds the passenger’s spot.

    E-tickets have virtually replaced traditional paper tickets in the majority of airports and airlines around the world. A recent survey by the International Air Transport Association, a trade organization representing 94 percent of international air traffic, estimated that air carriers worldwide would achieve 92 percent e-ticket penetration by December 2007. In the United States, the survey estimates a 97 percent penetration. The association’s goal is to have 100 percent e-ticketing used by all air carriers worldwide by May 2008, though analysts say some airlines will continue issuing a very small percentage of paper tickets.

    I recently booked a round-trip set of flights from Minneapolis to Shanghai in business class.

    I needed to head back to China to resume teaching English after the end of the photo season in Minneapolis, where I was shooting portraits and wedding photos. I had one week free with which to travel between the two cities, so I planned the craziest round-the-world hop.

    I booked the set of flights using US Airways miles. My route, from Minneapolis – Chicago – Frankfurt – Istanbul – Bangkok – Seoul – Shanghai – Zurich – Munich – Chicago – Minneapolis, included my way home for Christmas during my three-week break.

    Here is what my flight path to Shanghai looked like:

    The cost of the trip was 90,000 US Airways miles.

    In June, I opened my US Airways Master Card, which gave me 30,000 miles after my first purchase. In August, US Airways had a sale of frequent flier miles: buy up to 50,000 miles and get the same amount for free. As it costs 90,000 miles to travel between North America and North Asia in business class, I purchased 30,000 US Airways miles for $1,200 and got the final 30,000 miles for “free.”

    US Airways is a part of Star Alliance, so with those miles I was able to book travel on any of the company’s airline partners. (In fact, despite booking with US Airways, none of my flights were on that carrier.) US Airways is unique as its awards are booked without a computer to tell the booking agent whether or not the reward flight travels over too many miles or segments.

    For example, US Airways reward tickets are supposed to have eight flight segments or less. I was able to book my 10-segment reward after talking to a few different booking agents. US Airways also is unique because it allows you to have an unlimited number of layovers that are 24 hours or less, and one stopover — of any time length — in a city in the same region of your destination. My region was North Asia, so I used my free stopover in Seoul.

    To get my 24-hour stopovers, I simply had to search the reward availabilities on Star Alliance partners. I used United.com to search for reward availability, segment by segment, starting with the hardest first. I made a spreadsheet and a Google map to note available flights and piece them together like a jigsaw puzzle.

    Eventually, I ended up with this itinerary:

    Minneapolis to Chicago on United (15-hour layover in Chicago)

    Chicago to Frankfurt on Lufthansa (24-hour layover in Frankfurt)

    Frankfurt to Istanbul on Lufthansa (8-hour layover in Istanbul)

    Shanghai to Zurich on Swiss (24-hour layover in Zurich)

    Zurich to Munich on Swiss (24-hour layover in Munich)

    Munich to Chicago on Lufthansa (12-hour layover in Chicago)

    Chicago to Minneapolis on United (Home for two weeks over Christmas)

    My final itinerary looked like this:

    In my spreadsheet, I made a note of every flight number, airline and departure time. I called US Airways to book the award and fed the agent each flight segment. I was able to put the flights on hold for three days.

    Once I was certain I wanted to travel on these dates, I called back to book the reward. I had to hang up and call again several times before I found a booking agent who was able to book the tickets for me. The final ticket cost 90,000 miles plus $140 in taxes.

    The total cost of the flights was $1,340, including $1,200 to purchase 30,000 miles and $140 in taxes on the award booking. That is a decent price in economy between Minneapolis and Shanghai, and a great price to fly around the world in business class. According to my quick search on Kayak, it would have cost somewhere between $5,000 in cash to fly between Minneapolis and Shanghai business class on my dates, and $19,000 to book the trip around the world.

    The actual flights were incredible. I felt a bit strange, as I didn’t really need the experience of flying business class. But it was really fantastic to have flat beds up in the sky and eat gourmet multi-course meals on each flight. I really appreciate that I was able to fly in such mega-luxury.

    More so, it was really wonderful to have the ability to hop around the world for one week. I ate wild-roast sausage in the rain in Frankfurt, attempted to only speak German for 24-hours straight (with mixed success) and fired a BB gun at a balloon over the Sea of Marmara in Istanbul (my first time firing any gun, ever). I partied the whole night long with hostel-mates in Bangkok, then had a Thai massage (hangover cure?). I ate Bi Bim Bap in Seoul, and toured tunnels dug by North Koreans under the Demilitarized Zone.

    Needless to say, I am really looking forward to the second half of this award when I’ll experience Switzerland for the first time and see the Christmas markets in Munich.

    Most of my knowledge I gleaned on how to book this reward ticket came from the travel blog Milevalue. It’s a travel blog run by a 26-year-old guy who writes easy-to-read blog posts on how to find and book overly complicated reward flights.

    Travel for me is about freedom — the freedom to be and explore new places, to meet new people and share ideas. Traveling doesn’t need to be as expensive or unattainable as it appears. You just have put in a little leg work.

    Google s Chrome browser is highly regarded as a top choice for general internet use and one easy to use feature is key in getting the cheapest flights available. If you right-click any link, the option to Open Link In An Incognito Window will be the second choice on the drop-down menu.

    By shopping for flights incognito. you ensure your previous window-shopping doesn t hide the cheapest fares.

    Third Trick: Skip The Big Sites For Really Cheap Fares

    Everything good on the internet, even the cheapest flights, is discovered first by geeks.

    Expedia, Hotwire, Priceline and their brethren are great starting points for finding flights. But if you want a really nerdy approach to getting the lowest fares, a new travel search engine uses math to show you your best options.

    Fourth Trick: Flexibility Plus Search Skills Equals The Absolute Cheapest Flight

    If you ve got to be in Denver at 7 PM on August 5, this cheap fare trick won t help. But most people have a little wiggle room for travel planning, and when you know how to use flexibility to its utmost, cheap flights abound.

    As we mentioned, Hipmunk is a great tool for flight searching. It even sorts flights by agony, so if you want to pay a little (a little, don t go crazy) more for no layovers or shorter flights, that s all worked into the sorting style for your fares. Super cool.

    We also briefly touched on the pricegraph function that makes Hipmunk so useful.

    Instead of keeping track of all the cheapest flights per search, Hipmunk puts them on a 90-day visual graph, so you can select the absolute cheapest fare available.

    The graphing element of flight search is unbelievably useful to find the cheapest flights, enabling you to see the peaks and ebbs of airfare pricing in a three month window.

    But wait! There s more!

    Need to travel outside the 90-day box? There s a trick to see flights over a longer period, but it s a manual workaround. In the address bar, the dates you ve selected are part of the address. Alter them to add more days to either end, and you will see a larger graph.

    Fifth Trick: Stay An Extra Day

    Flying at low-peak or low-demand times will shave even more dollars off your fare. Tuesday through Thursday are the cheapest days to fly, so if you can stretch to a longer stay, you can save beaucoup bucks on your flight.

    Not all tips will work, but combining these strategies will definitely help in your search for the cheapest flight ever.
