For travelers to Japan

I made this site for foreigners

who plan to visit Japan and who are interested in Japan.

When I visited foreign countries,

I found many cultural differences and I am very interested in them.

I think Japanese culture is very unique

and I am sure you will enjoy knowing and traveling in Japan.

If you have any questions or if you want to know any topics,

please let me know.

I will try to enrich this site.

I made an original tour to see the most beautiful sites in winter. Of course, I will be the tuide!

Washoku, traditional Japanese food was listed as Intangible World Cultural Heritage.

Mount Fuji was listed as 17th World heritage site in Japan.

I think a lot of foreigners are afraid of coming to Japan after the earthquake, but people who came to Japan really enjoyed their stay without any anxiety.

I think a lot of foreigners are afraid of coming to Japan after the earthquake, but people who came to Japan really enjoyed their stay without any anxiety.

Here are some messages from the foreign tourists in April, 2011.

    Airlines that fly to Japan

    Japan overview

If you’re a gadget guru or just have a sweet spot for new technology, Japan is the place for you. Grab your latest invention and book airline tickets to Japan for a tour of high-tech heaven. After all, Japan is the country that invented economy cars, computers, gadgets, and gaming consoles. But while you’re playing with your new portable gaming station on your Japan flight take a moment to consider all the non-tech contributions that Japan has made. This is the country that brought us the bonsai, cherry blossoms, samurais and lavish garden designs. Aside from the wild inventions and cultural contributions that come from Japan, the Japanese are an enchanting people with a love for culture. If you’re planning a vacation to Japan, keep in mind that approximately 300,000 “matsuri” (festivals) are held every year.

Japan is a mountainous archipelago made up of four major islands and more than 4,000 smaller ones, though most of the population lives in cities. Despite its densely populated cities, Japan is easy to navigate and tourists will have no problem finding their way around. Public transportation is a breeze and the people are friendly and helpful.

    Japan climate

Japan’s climate varies with its latitude. The north has four distinct seasons while the south is subtropical. Okinawa averages a temperature of 21 C. The plum and cherry blossom trees bloom in March and April. The rainy season lasts from mid-June to mid-July. Except for Hokkaido and the mountains, it gets very hot and humid after a rainstorm. Typhoon season lasts from the end of August through September, but Japan generally only gets thunderstorms. Winter lasts from December to March and sees lots of snow with great mountain skiing.

Big In Japan: Abandoned – Gulliver’s Kingdom – Theme Park #online

    #gullivers travel
    #

Gulliver s Kingdom Theme Park, built in the shadow of Japan s Mount Fuji with oodles of government stimulus money, was a sprawling white elephant that existed for only 10 years. Today there s little if any trace of the abandoned theme park. its ruins, or Gulliver himself but the eerie and unsettling images captured by a legion of intrepid “haikyo” explorers.

    Time and Tied

(images via: Spechtrograph and Michael John Grist )

Gulliver s Kingdom was a failed theme park located near Kawaguchi-machi, Yamanashi prefecture, Japan. The park opened in 1997 and typified the “bridge to nowhere” construction projects Japan s government and banking sector championed in the 1990s.

(images via: UER and Kuroneko )

Though intended to boost the economy out of its post-bubble doldrums, white elephants like Gulliver s Kingdom created some short-term construction jobs but little permanent employment.

    (image via: Spechtrograph )

Gulliver s Kingdom was backed financially by the Niigata Chuo Bank. which later collapsed into a sea of red ink and toxic, non-performing loans. As it morphed into a so-called Zombie Bank, the Niigata Chuo Bank was ordered to clear its books of unprofitable assets, of which Gulliver s Kingdom was one: they had lent the venture around $350 million. In October of 2001, the unpopular theme park shut its Brobdingnagian doors for the last time.

    Cult of Poison-ality

(images via: Spechtrograph and Dreamin Trip Salad )

On the face of it, Gulliver s Kingdom had a few things going for it. Its location, for one thing – nestled in Kamikuishiki village at the foot of Mount Fuji. About 25 million tourists descend upon Mount Fuji s environs each year and as beautiful as it is, how long can one look at a dormant volcano?

(images via: K3N s Blog and Spechtrograph )

And about that location Mount Fuji has a dark side, most notably the Aokigahara area where seemingly oblivious project planners decided to build Gulliver s Kingdom. Ranked sixth by the website Cracked.com on their list of The 6 Creepiest Places on Earth. Aokigahara is Japan s “suicide forest” said to be the second most popular suicide location after San Francisco s Golden Gate Bridge. On the bright side, if the kids are driving you nuts after an afternoon spent at Gulliver s Kingdom well, perish that thought.

    (image via: MutantMandias )

Bad enough Gulliver s Kingdom had a suicide forest as its neighbor, the park s other neighbors were much, much worse. Kamikuishiki village is notorious for being the location of the Aum Shinrikyo doomsday cult s headquarters and nerve gas production facility.

    (image via: UER )

Remember Aum? They re the whack-jobs who carried out Sarin gas attacks that killed 19 people, including 12 on the Tokyo subway. On March 22nd, 1995, the cult s compound was stormed by over 1,000 police officers decked out in full-face gas masks.

(images via: Michael John Grist and UER )

Three years later (and one year after Gulliver s Kingdom opened), residents living nearby were still being reminded of Aum Shinrikyo s monstrous crimes. “I can still smell the chemicals sometimes when I take a walk in the morning,” said 69-year-old Norie Okamoto, who lives just 100 meters (330 ft) from one of the cult s former Sarin production facilities. Now Robert Duvall might love the smell of napalm in the morning, but you and your family out for some fun at Gulliver s Kingdom? Not *cough* so much.

    Gulliver Unravels

(images via: Michael John Grist and K3N s Blog )

The exposure of Aum Shinrikyo was pretty much the straw that broke the back of Gulliver s Kingdom, though there was really so much wrong with the park on so many levels one might say it was clearly doomed from the start.

Gulliver s Kingdom wasn t actually a Six Flags style park, by the way. The closest things to the usual amusement park rides and rollercoasters were a bobsled track and a luge course – not exactly ideal for the kiddies.

    (image via: UER )

We don t recall Gulliver s Kingdom as being a stop on the World Bobsled Tour (if there is such a thing), but maybe that whole nerve gas factory proximity thing put organizers off scheduling events there.

    (image via: MutantMandias )

Let s not forget the immobile star of the show, a 45 meter (147.5 ft) long statue of Jonathan Swift s epic character. Even the name of the park was a misnomer. If it s Gulliver s Kingdom, what s the big guy doing securely pegged to the ground? No way to treat a king, now is it? Those are just some of the questions we ll never know the answers to and here s one more: what s inside the doors cut into Gulliver s body??

    (images via: MutantMandias )

All that s by the by, by the way, since Gulliver s Kingdom is no more and I mean literally. After a thorough demolition in 2007, all one can see are some exposed foundations and the odd tuft of asbestos insulation snagged on twisted rebar.

    (image via: UER )

If not for these vivid and disturbing photographic images, few would be the wiser as to what came and went at the foot of Mount Fuji almost as fast as the 2010 movie Gulliver s Travels appeared and then vanished from your local marquee. Both, as it happens, were in 3D.

    (image via: National Geographic )

Nothing remains of Gulliver s Kingdom today but a rough concrete scar, and even this basic foundation is gradually being subsumed by dirt, dust and windblown sand. Was it all a dream? Perhaps it was and if any lessons can be learned by Gulliver s Kingdom s rise, fall and disappearance it s that if one must dream, at least dream big.

Japan’s mountainous landscapes, hidden valleys, traditional gardens, onsens (hot springs), and ancient temples are bewitching. (Hanging out naked in hot springs with strangers may be confronting initially but it’s supremely relaxing once you, well, relax!) Kyoto is stacked with 17 World Heritage sites, 1600 Buddhist temples and more than 400 Shinto shrines: it’s a cultural gem. One of the best times to plan a holiday to Japan is in March–April: it’s not too hot and cherry blossom season delights all who witness it. ‘Golden Week’ is late April–early May and everyone takes a holiday domestically then, so steer clear of that period if you can.

Japan Airlines resumes flights from D/FW today

    Kazuhiro Nogi/Agence France-Presse

    Related

Japan Airlines resumes flying Monday from Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport to Tokyo’s Narita International Airport for the first time in more than 14 years.

The Japanese carrier initially will operate four flights a week but has said it might expand to daily service in the spring. It will fly a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner jet — which has 161 seats and first-class, premium economy and economy cabins — on the route.

Japan Airlines will mark its return with a traditional Japanese gate ceremony at 10 a.m. Monday at gate 22 in Terminal D. The flight is scheduled to depart at 11:45 a.m.

Japan Airlines ended its D/FW-to- Narita service on Oct. 7, 2001, following the terrorist hijackings of Sept. 11, 2001. It initially began that service in March 1999.

Its Oneworld Alliance partner American Airlines, the dominant carrier at D/FW Airport, will continue to fly twice a day between D/FW Airport and Narita, using Boeing 777-200 aircraft with 247 to 260 seats. Each carrier will put its code on the other’s flights, meaning Fort Worth-based American and Japan Airlines will share revenue from each other’s U.S.-Japan flights.

Japan Airlines will rely on American and regional brand American Eagle to feed passengers to its D/FW flights, just as American feeds passengers to JAL’s flights out of Narita.

D/FW, the nation’s fourth-busiest airport, sees more than 63 million travelers a year and offers flights to more than 200 destinations, including 57 international cities. Nearly a third of the international destinations were added in the last five years.

Japan Airlines’ return to D/FW Airport is the latest in a number of international wins for North Texas travelers in the past four years. Among them:

To the west: American Airlines launched service to Seoul, South Korea, in May 2013; to Shanghai and Hong Kong in June 2014; and Beijing in May 2015. Qantas Airways launched service to Sydney in September 2014.

To the east: Emirates Airline launched flights to Dubai, United Arab Emirates, in February 2012. Qatar Airways launched flights to Doha, Qatar, in July 2014, and Etihad Airways launched flights to Abu Dhabi, UAE, last December.

Japan on a Budget, Tips for Cheap Travel!

Here s a non-exhaustive collection of ideas for travelling Japan without spending a lot of money. These ideas for cheap travel are somewhat random, and unordered, but take a look and you ll be sure to pick up a tip or two to save money on your Japan holiday.

    Things To Do In Japan

    In this article:

    Travel in off-peak times

Now this doesn t mean you will be missing the good weather. Peak times in Japan are during the major national holidays and the school holidays.

The best time is April. This is spring in Japan and students are at school, the cherry blossoms are blooming and the weather is great. September and October are good times also, it is autumn in Japan and everyone is back to school and work.

Around the end of April and beginning of May is Golden Week in Japan. 4 national holidays over a week, prices for accommodation go up and shinkansens are booked solid best to avoid this time!

Mid-July and all of August are summer holidays in Japan. which means peak domestic travel and hence, high prices on just about everything. It is easily the busiest time of year and also the hottest.

    Japan Rail Pass

When people tell me they re going to visit Japan, the first thing I ask them is have you bought your Japan Rail Pass yet?

The JR Pass is available to anyone on a tourist (Temporary Visitor) visa and gives you unlimited travel on all Japan Rail buses, trains and shinkansen (bullet trains) the only exception is you can t travel on the fastest express services.

The Japan Rail Pass just flash this pass at the ticket gates and stroll on through

At first glance, the pass may seem expensive. Last time I travelled to Japan on a tourist visa I paid about $600 AUD for a 3 week JR Pass. Consider this example: a return trip on the shinkansen (bullet train) from Nagoya to Okayama is normally about 24,000 yen (about $300 AUD). Osaka to Tokyo is much further and more expensive. I did about 6 of these trips during a 3 week stay, so I saved about $1000 AUD and saw a lot of the country.

7, 14 or 21 day passes are available and conditions are you must be travelling on a tourist visa and you have to purchase the JR Pass before you enter Japan. Check costs and buy a JR Pass online .

    Cheap shinkansen travel

If you can t get a JR Pass, but you don t want to take the bus, there are cheaper options for the shinkansen. You can buy an unreserved seat, which means a seat is not guaranteed. People tend to sit in the carriage vestibules and there is nothing wrong with that. Being a super fast train, you re not in for a long journey! But if you travel in off-peak times, and during the day (i.e. not the morning or evening when shinkansen is used for work travel) then you ll get a cheaper ticket AND a seat.

    JR West Shinkansen series 700.

From sublime vistas of snowcapped volcanoes to some of the globe’s most utterly modern cities, this island country offers a whole universe of exploration!

Japan’s a fascinating destination, defined by a venerable culture that’s elegantly sophisticated and yet also genuinely warmhearted and fun-loving. Explore ancient landmarks and some of the most technologized entertainment hubs you’ve ever seen in Japan’s great cities, which include Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto. Take in Tokyo’s colossal cityscape from the Roppongi Hills Mori Tower and enjoy a clear-day view of Mount Fuji, one of the most recognizable (and revered) summits on Earth. Among Kyoto’s incomparable heritage sites, explore Japan’s immensely rich spiritual traditions at landmarks such as the Saiho-ji Zen temple and the Shinto shrine of Kamigamo. Relish the country’s cherished blooms of cherry blossoms, celebrated in art and culture for centuries. Meanwhile, start a lifelong investigation of Japanese cuisine—among the world’s most refined—in Osaka’s spirited Dotonbori district, a great place for ramen, sushi, udon, and other delectable specialties.

    Culture

Japan has a strong arts tradition. During the years known as the Edo period, the Japanese developed a style of wood block printing known as ukiyo-e. Prints by the artist Hiroshige have become iconic of this style and continue to be popular in museum exhibits today. The roots of origami date back centuries. Origami is a fascinating art whereby paper is folded into animals, flowers and other objects.

The Japanese love of nature can be seen in the arts of bonsai and ikebana. Bonsai practitioners take young trees, typically pine, and through careful pruning and fertilizing create miniature trees. Developed in the 16th century, ikebana is the practice of arranging flowers in an artistically pleasing and harmonious way.

A Japanese form of theatre, known as Kabuki, developed in the Edo period. Visitors to Japan who are able to attend a performance will enjoy the traditional rotating stage as well as the footbridge, or hanamichi, which extends into the audience making attendees feel like part of the action. In a Kabuki play, all the actors are men, some of whom play the female roles, and the plays are typically about historical events or love relationships. Another event that visitors to the country will find interesting is the Japanese tea ceremony, which is a highly ritualized practice of preparing and drinking tea.

When foreigners think of Japanese sports, sumo wrestling is one of the traditional sports that instantly spring to mind. This national sport originated in ancient times as a performance for the Shinto gods. In this unique style of wrestling two competitors fight within a 15 foot circle. The match is lost when one competitor goes outside the ring, or if any part of his body, other than the soles of the feet, touches the ground. Both sumo bouts and training are highly ritualized and fighters wear the mawashi, a type of belt made of silk. The other type of sport that people think of when they think about Japan is the martial arts which include karate, judo, kendo and more. Most of these are focused on technique over power and disciplined training is a hallmark of them.

Baseball is likely the most popular sport in Japan today; it was introduced to Japan by the United States around the 1870’s. There are two professional leagues in Japan, and many players have had success outside the country playing for American baseball clubs.

    Food and Drink

Early in its history Japan developed rice agriculture and rice remains a central part of Japanese cuisine today. Popular dishes with rice include domburi and curry rice (kare raisu). Rice not only plays a role in many Japanese entrees, but it serves as an ingredient in rice crackers, rice cakes and even rice wine.

While rice is an integral part of the food culture in Japan, noodle dishes are very common too, the most common being udon, soba or ramen. Udon noodles are made from wheat flour and are boiled in a broth with ingredients added as toppings. In contrast, soba noodles are made from buckwheat, and are thinner and darker and typically served cold. Usually, soba is eaten with sliced green onions and a dipping sauce and often other toppings. Finally, ramen are thin egg noodles served hot in a flavored broth.

Tofu, derived from soybeans, is a popular protein. Often fried, it is also regularly added to soups, such as Miso, a typical Japanese broth soup, which might be served at any of the three mealtimes. Japanese food is overall a very healthy diet which doesn’t put a lot of emphasis on meat, though dishes like grilled chicken, yakitori, and deep fried pork cutlets, tonkatsu, developed in the late 19th century.

Where To Get The Cheapest Airline Tickets To Japan

    06/04/2013 Adam

There is a good chance that almost everyone that views this site wants to visit Japan at least once in their lifetime, if not many times more and possibly live there. What s the biggest thing stopping you from getting to Japan? Money. This rings especially true to the younger readers out there, where a budget may be nonexistent.

Cheap ticket prices aren t what they used to be (I remember round trip tickets from the U.S. for around $600-700 in 2005). I would love to be able to give away free trips to Japan to every single person who enters this site (who knows, maybe one day there will be a contest with this as a first prize).  But I figure the next best thing I can do is help you find the cheapest way to get to Japan.

So when you re heading to Japan from your home country, what website do you use to get the cheapest airfare?

    [yop_poll id= 6 ]

    Voting Closed

This list is not all inclusive as I m sure there are dozens of more airline websites, but these seem to be the major ones people use to try to get the best rates. It would be an incredible reference to everyone reading if in the comments section you could briefly include the:

    1. Website you use for cheapest tickets

    2. Country you fly out of

    3. Cost

    4. Month/Year of your flight

Any other details, strategy, or tactics you have for getting cheap tickets to Japan is highly appreciated!

    Japan

In 1603, a Tokugawa shogunate (military dictatorship) ushered in a long period of isolation from foreign influence in order to secure its power. For 250 years this policy enabled Japan to enjoy stability and a flowering of its indigenous culture. Following the Treaty of Kanagawa with the United States in 1854, Japan opened its ports and began to intensively modernize and industrialize. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Japan became a regional power that was able to defeat the forces of both China and Russia. It occupied Korea, Formosa (Taiwan), and southern Sakhalin Island. In 1933 Japan occupied Manchuria and in 1937 it launched a full-scale invasion of China. Japan attacked US forces in 1941 – triggering America’s entry into World War II – and soon occupied much of East and Southeast Asia. After its defeat in World War II, Japan recovered to become an economic power and a staunch ally of the US. While the emperor retains his throne as a symbol of national unity, actual power rests in networks of powerful politicians, bureaucrats, and business executives. The economy experienced a major slowdown starting in the 1990s following three decades of unprecedented growth, but Japan still remains a major economic power, both in Asia and globally. In 2005, Japan began a two-year term as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council. To be updated

Japan changes prime ministers the way most of us change our shirt. And not many of them get a second bite at the apple.

    JAPAN

    See All Itineraries

The word Japan conjures diverse and colorful images: the serene, iconic Mount Fuji; Kyoto temples fringed by cherry blossoms; the outrageous couture of Harajuku girls on a Tokyo Sunday; futuristic bullet trains; a geisha in kimono and painted face. It is the land of anime and pachinko. of exquisite cuisine, and of electronics and robotics innovation that transforms the way we live and work. Visiting Japan, it is easy to recognize what science-fiction writer William Gibson called the global imagination s default setting for the future.

The foundation of this prosperous modern Japan was its post-war constitution, which along with an unstinting work ethic kindled unbridled economic growth. Even with the recessions of past decades, Japan is still home to the world s third-highest GDP; it is a beacon of modernity to a continent that is racing to catch up with this once hermitic nation.

Japan s insular past may be long gone but many of the old ways remain. One can still see elegant women in meticulous kimonos gingerly navigating massive crosswalks; kabuki opera performances; and sushi masters using techniques from the 17 th -century Edo Period. This is what makes Japan so appealing: the harmonious confluence of the ancient and hyper-modern into one fascinating whole, firmly rooted in tradition but ever hurtling into the future.

Where to go in Japan #cheap #cheap #tickets

    #japan travel guide

    Share

Two weeks is the minimum needed to skim the surface of what Japan can offer. The capital, Tokyo, and the former imperial city and thriving cultural centre of Kyoto, will be top of most visitors’ lists of where to go, and deservedly so, but you could avoid the cities entirely and head to the mountains or smaller islands to discover an alternative side of the country, away from the most heavily beaten tourist tracks.

It would be easy enough to spend two weeks just in Tokyo . The metropolis is home to some of the world’s most ambitious architecture, stylish shops and internationally celebrated restaurants and bars – as well as glimpses of traditional Japan at scores of temples, shrines and imperial gardens. Consider also taking in a couple of the city’s surrounding attractions, in particular the historic towns of Nikkō . home to the amazing Tōshō-gū shrine complex, and Kamakura . with its giant Buddha statue and tranquil woodland walks.

Northern Honshū sees surprisingly few overseas visitors, but its sleepy villages and relaxed cities deserve to be better known. The Golden Hall of Hiraizumi more than justifies the journey, and can be easily combined with the islet-sprinkled Matsushima Bay or rural Tōno . The region is also known for its vibrant summer festivals, notably those at Sendai, Aomori, Hirosaki and Akita, and for its sacred mountains, including Dewa-sanzan . home to a sect of ascetic mountain priests, and the eerie, remote wastelands of Osore-zan .

Further north, across the Tsugaru Straits, Hokkaidō is Japan’s final frontier, with many national parks including the outstanding Daisetsu-zan National Park . offering excellent hiking trails over mountain peaks and through soaring rock gorges. The lovely far northern islands of Rebun-tō and Rishiri-tō are ideal summer escapes. Hokkaidō’s most historic city is Hakodate . with its late nineteenth-century wooden houses and churches built by expat traders, while its modern capital, Sapporo . is home to the raging nightlife centre of Suskino and the original Sapporo Brewery. Winter is a fantastic time to visit and catch Sapporo’s amazing Snow Festival and go skiing at some of Japan’s top resorts including Niseko .

Skiing, mountaineering and soaking in hot springs are part of the culture of Central Honshū . an area dominated by the magnificent Japan Alps. Both the old castle town of Matsumoto . and Nagano . with its atmospheric temple of pilgrimage, Zenkō-ji, can be used as a starting point for exploring the region. Highlights include the tiny mountain resort of Kamikōchi and the immaculately preserved Edo-era villages of Tsumago and Magome . linked by a short hike along the remains of a 300-year-old stone-paved road. Takayama deservedly draws many visitors to its handsome streets lined with merchant houses and temples, built by generations of skilled carpenters. In the remote neighbouring valleys you’ll find the rare thatched houses of Ogimachi . Suganuma and Ainokura . remnants of a fast-disappearing rural Japan.

On the Sea of Japan coast, the historic city of Kanazawa is home to Kenroku-en, one of Japan’s best gardens, and the stunning 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa. Nagoya . on the heavily industrialized southern coast, is a more manageable city than Tokyo or Ōsaka, and has much to recommend it, including the fine Tokugawa Art Museum and many great places to eat. The efficient new airport nearby also makes the city a good alternative entry point. From Nagoya it’s a short hop to the pretty castle towns of Inuyama and Gifu . which holds summer displays of the ancient skill of ukai. or cormorant fishing.

South of the Japan Alps, the Kansai plains are scattered with ancient temples, shrines and the remnants of imperial cities. Kyoto . custodian of Japan’s traditional culture, is home to its most refined cuisine, classy ryokan, glorious gardens, and magnificent temples and palaces. Nearby Nara is a more manageable size but no slouch when it comes to venerable monuments, notably the great bronze Buddha of Tōdai-ji and Hōryū-ji’s unrivalled collection of early Japanese statuary. The surrounding region contains a number of still-thriving religious foundations, such as the highly atmospheric temples of Hiei-zan and Kōya-san, the revered Shinto shrine Ise-jingū . and the beautiful countryside pilgrimage routes of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Kumano region.

Not all of Kansai is so rarefied, though. The slightly unconventional metropolis of Ōsaka has an easy-going atmosphere and boisterous nightlife, plus several interesting sights. Further west, the port of Kōbe offers a gentler cosmopolitan atmosphere, while Himeji is home to Japan’s most fabulous castle, as well as some impressive modern gardens and buildings.

For obvious reasons Hiroshima is the most visited location in Western Honshū . On the way there, pause at Okayama to stroll around one of Japan’s top three gardens, Kōraku-en, and the appealingly preserved Edo-era town of Kurashiki . The beauty of the Inland Sea, dotted with thousands of islands, is best appreciated from the idyllic fishing village of Tomonoura . the port of Onomichi and the relaxed islands of Nao-shima, Ikuchi-jima and Miya-jima.

Crossing to the San-in coast, the castle town of Hagi retains some handsome samurai houses and atmospheric temples, only surpassed by even more enchanting Tsuwano . further inland. One of Japan’s most venerable shrines, Izumo Taisha . lies roughly midway along the coast, near the lake- and seaside city of Matsue . home to the region’s only original castle.

Location for Japan’s most famous pilgrimage, a walking tour around 88 Buddhist temples, Shikoku also offers dramatic scenery in the Iya valley and along its rugged coastline. Its largest city, Matsuyama, has an imperious castle and the splendidly ornate Dōgo Onsen Honkan – one of Japan’s best hot springs. There’s also the lovely garden Ritsurin-kōen in Takamatsu and the ancient Shinto shrine at Kotohira .

The southernmost of Japan’s four main islands, Kyūshū is probably best known for Nagasaki . an attractive and cosmopolitan city that has overcome its terrible war-time history. Hikers and onsen enthusiasts should head up into the central highlands, where Aso-san ’s smouldering peak dominates the world’s largest volcanic crater, or to the more southerly meadows of Ebino Kōgen. So much hot water gushes out of the ground in Beppu . on the east coast, that it’s known as Japan’s hot-spring capital. Fukuoka . on the other hand, takes pride in its innovative modern architecture and an exceptionally lively entertainment district.

Okinawa comprises more than a hundred islands stretching in a great arc from southern Kyūshū to within sight of Taiwan. An independent kingdom until the early seventeenth century, traces of the island’s distinctive, separate culture still survive. The beautifully reconstructed former royal palace dominates the capital city, Naha . but the best of the region lies on its remoter islands. This is where you’ll find Japan’s most stunning white-sand beaches and its best diving, particularly around the subtropical islands of Ishigaki and Iriomote .

    Tokyo

Discussion on defining district borders for Tokyo is in progress. If you know the city pretty well, please share your opinion on the talk page.

Tokyo is a huge city with several district articles containing sightseeing, restaurant, nightlife and accommodation listings — have a look at each of them.

Tōkyō (東京) is the capital of Japan. At over 13 million people in the official metropolitan area alone, Tokyo is the core of the most populated urban area in the world, Tokyo Metropolis (which has a population of over 37 million people). This huge, wealthy and fascinating metropolis brings high-tech visions of the future side by side with glimpses of old Japan, and has something for everyone.

    Districts Edit

The geography of central Tokyo is defined by the JR Yamanote Line (see Get around ). The center of Tokyo — the former area reserved for the Shogun and his samurai — lies within the loop, while the Edo-era downtown (下町 shitamachi ) is to the north and east. Sprawling around in all directions and blending in seamlessly are Yokohama. Kawasaki and Chiba. Tokyo’s suburbs.
