Where to go

Known as the pearl of the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka is an island that is rich in culture and history, spectacular landscapes and smiling Sri Lankans. With a history that dates back 35,000 years, Sri Lanka has flourished as a force to be reckoned with ever since it was included by Ptolemy in the world map. Surrounded by stunning beaches of different hues, the country’s interior is painted from a vibrant color palette which captures the exquisite beauty of a diverse variety of flora and wildlife that inhabit this land. Whether it’s exploring archaeological sites in Anuradhapura that have been around since 543 BC, observing the largest animal in the world in its natural habitat miles away from the Mirissa coast or visiting the birthplace of Ceylon Tea, a brand that is known across the world, in the breath-taking highlands, Sri Lanka is a destination that one must live through and experience.

Anuradhapura

Although today this historical city is comprised of a multitude of enigmatic and captivating ruins which allow visitors to explore Buddhism in Sri Lanka and Sri Lanka’s heritage architecture, in its heyday Anuradhapura was Sri Lanka’s shining capital, founded in 377 BC as the island’s first civilisation and which remained so until the 11 th century AD. The stately royal city is a resilient one, having endured multiple invasions from South India which it steadfastly stood strong against until 995 AD. Anuradhapura’s imposing dagobas and sprawling monasteries are testament to its deeply-embedded Buddhist roots, earning it the title of a World Heritage Site. It’s also home to what is believed to be the world’s oldest tree: the Sri Maha Bodhi, which is said to be a cutting from the tree under which Buddha sat and attained enlightenment.

Anuradhapura is vast: sprawling across 40sqkm, it is difficult to explore all of the citadel in one day, so we recommend getting around by bike as the paths are flat and the routes between the remains are scenic – a guide will accompany you every step of the way. Having a site guide will dramatically enhance a visit to Anuradhapura, bringing to life the historic ruins which span 1,300 years.

Other things to do in this area include: birding at Kaludiya Pokuna, an abandoned Buddhist temple shrouded within a tranquil wilderness; trekking through Ritigala Forest Reserve in search of the remains of an ancient Buddhist monastery which lie hidden within the jungle, and hiking up the mountain peak of Mihintale, said to be the place where Buddhism was first introduced to Sri Lanka. Relax after a tiring day exploring these fascinating cultural sites with an authentic Ayurvedic spa treatment.

Health Information for Travelers to Sri Lanka – Traveler view #cheap

#sri lanka travel
#

Vaccines and Medicines

You should be up to date on routine vaccinations while traveling to any destination. Some vaccines may also be required for travel.

Get travel vaccines and medicines because there is a risk of these diseases in the country you are visiting.

Ask your doctor what vaccines and medicines you need based on where you are going, how long you are staying, what you will be doing, and if you are traveling from a country other than the US.

You may need this vaccine if your trip will last more than a month, depending on where you are going in Sri Lanka and what time of year you are traveling. You should also consider this vaccine if you plan to visit rural areas in Sri Lanka or will be spending a lot of time outdoors, even for trips shorter than a month. Your doctor can help you decide if this vaccine is right for you based on your travel plans. See more in-depth information on Japanese encephalitis in Sri Lanka .

Rabies can be found in dogs, bats, and other mammals in Sri Lanka, so CDC recommends this vaccine for the following groups:

  • Travelers involved in outdoor and other activities (such as camping, hiking, biking, adventure travel, and caving) that put them at risk for animal bites.
  • People who will be working with or around animals (such as veterinarians, wildlife professionals, and researchers).
  • People who are taking long trips or moving to Sri Lanka
  • Children, because they tend to play with animals, might not report bites, and are more likely to have animal bites on their head and neck.

There is no risk of yellow fever in Sri Lanka. The government of Sri Lanka requires proof of yellow fever vaccination only if you are arriving from a country with risk of yellow fever. This does not include the US. If you are traveling from a country other than the US, check this list to see if you may be required to get the yellow fever vaccine: Countries with risk of yellow fever virus (YFV) transmission .

For more information on recommendations and requirements, see yellow fever recommendations and requirements for Sri Lanka. Your doctor can help you decide if this vaccine is right for you based on your travel plans.

Sri Lanka has seduced travellers for centuries. Marco Polo described it as the finest island of its size in the world, while successive waves of Indian, Arab and European traders and adventurers flocked to its palm-fringed shores, attracted by reports of rare spices, precious stones and magnificent elephants. Poised just above the Equator amid the balmy waters of the Indian Ocean, the island’s legendary reputation for natural beauty and plenty has inspired an almost magical regard even in those who have never visited the place. Romantically inclined geographers, poring over maps of the island, compared its outline to a teardrop falling from the tip of India or to the shape of a pearl (the less impressionable Dutch likened it to a leg of ham), while even the name given to the island by early Arab traders – Serendib – gave rise to the English word “serendipity”.

Marco Polo’s bold claim still holds true. Sri Lanka packs an extraordinary variety of places to visit within its modest physical dimensions, and few islands of comparable size can boast a natural environment of such beauty and diversity. Lapped by the Indian Ocean, the coast is fringed with idyllic – and often refreshingly undeveloped – beaches. while the interior boasts a compelling variety of landscapes ranging from wildlife-rich lowland jungles. home to extensive populations of elephants, leopards and rare endemic bird species, to the misty heights of the hill country. swathed in immaculately manicured tea plantations. Nor does the island lack in man-made attractions. Sri Lanka boasts more than two thousand years of recorded history, and the remarkable achievements of the early Sinhalese civilization can still be seen in the sequence of ruined cities and great religious monuments that litter the northern plains.

The glories of this early Buddhist civilization continue to provide a benchmark of national identity for the island’s Sinhalese population, while Sri Lanka’s historic role as the world’s oldest stronghold of Theravada Buddhism lends it a unique cultural identity that permeates life at every level. There’s more to Sri Lanka than just Buddhists, however. The island’s geographical position at one of the most important staging posts of Indian Ocean trade laid it open to a uniquely wide range of influences, as generations of Arab, Malay, Portuguese, Dutch and British settlers subtly transformed its culture, architecture and cuisine, while the long-established Tamil population in the north have established a vibrant Hindu culture that owes more to India than to the Sinhalese south.

It is, however, this very diversity that has long threatened to tear the country apart. For much of the past three decades the island was the site of one of Asia’s most pernicious civil wars. as the Sri Lankan Army and the LTTE, or Tamil Tigers, battled it out in the island’s north and east, until the final victory of government forces in early 2009. The island is now experiencing peace for the first time in a generation, and although the physical, political and human scars of war remain raw in many places, most Sri Lankans are now once again looking to the future with guarded optimism.

Best time to visit Sri Lanka

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways to experience a country is by eating! Whether you re sampling street food, savouring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

Things to try in Sri Lanka

Sri Lankan curries are among the hottest in the world, but don’t let that put you off. Fragrant, coconut-based curries packed with chilli, garlic, turmeric and coriander will give your tastebuds a treat.

2. Seafood

Being an island, Sri Lanka has access to an amazing array of seafood. Feast on fresh crab, swordfish, lobster and squid – or choose a fiery seafood-based curry.

These egg-filled crepe-like wonders can usually be found at breakfast buffets. Usually made from a rice flour and coconut milk batter, they are a Sri Lankan twist on the traditional pancake.

With miles of tea plantations, Sri Lankans have grown accustomed to drinking their popular home-grown cash crop. Tea is served with milk and sugar almost everywhere in Sri Lanka, mainly at breakfast and during the day.

History Edit

Sri Lanka has more than 2,550 years of continuous written history by means of the Mahawansha, and was also mentioned in several ancient Indian texts. One of the most famous is the Ramayana. in which the island, which was referred to as Lanka, was the island fortress of the king Ravana, who captured the wife of Rama an incarnation of the Hindu God, Vishnu. Legend has it that Hanuman the monkey god flew over to Lanka and destroyed the capital by setting it on fire, while Rama and his remaining troops later crossed over from the mainland by building a land bridge across the sea.

The Sinhalese arrived in Sri Lanka late in the 6th century BC, probably from northern India. Buddhism was introduced beginning in about the mid-3rd century BC, and a great civilization developed at such cities as Anuradhapura (kingdom from c. 200 BC to c. 1000 AD) and Polonnaruwa (c. 1070 to 1200). Other notable but relatively more recent kingdoms are Dambadeniya, Yapahuwa, Gampola, Kandy and Jaffna Kingdoms.

Partially occupied by the Portuguese in the 16th century and by the Dutch in the 17th century, the coastal parts island was ceded to the British in 1796, and became a crown colony in 1802. The entire island was ceded to the British in 1815. As Ceylon, it became independent in 1948; the name was changed to Sri Lanka in 1972.

In May 2009 government military forces defeated the Tamil Tigers’ separatist movement and ended a brutal 26 year-long war that began in 1983, thus opening up a new chapter in its history.

Climate Edit

Since Sri Lanka is a tropical country, you can expect the rain anytime of the year in most parts. However, the two major rainy seasons are North-East monsoon (October to January) and South-West monsoon (May to July).

Being an island, the climate of Sri Lanka changes dramatically from one part of the country to another. For example at Nuwara Eliya. in the hills of Central Sri Lanka. has a temperature around -5-20°C throughout the year, whereas Hambanthota, located in the dry zone, has a temperature consistently around 30-35°C.

Terrain Edit

Mostly low, flat to rolling plain with mountains in the south-central interior rising to 2,524m at Piduruthalagala.

Talk Edit

Sinhala. spoken by the majority Sinhalese, and Tamil. spoken by the minority Tamil and Muslim groups, are Sri Lanka’s two official languages. English is commonly used in most cities, especially Colombo. Kandy and Galle. and by government and tourism officials. But while most of the people in Colombo can speak English, don’t expect everyone, everywhere to be able to speak it fluently. In the beach and tourist areas you will have no problem with English. Most people in rural villages, however, cannot speak any English, beyond a few simple words.

  • Sinhala Language The greeting in Sinhala is “ayubowan”. It means “May you live longer”; ‘Thank you’ is “Bohoma sthuthi” and “how are you” is “kohomada”, pronounced “Ko homede””
  • Tamil Language. The greeting in Tamil is “Vanakkam”; ‘Thank you’ is “Nandri”

Sinhala writing is much more curved than Tamil. After a while, you’ll learn how to distinguish between the two.

Health Information for Travelers to Sri Lanka – Traveler view #travel

Welcome to Sri Lankan Dreams

Sorry for sending this so late but myself and Paul wanted to say thank you for organising our wonderful trip to Sri Lanka! Our driver was fantastic. We were able to do so much in our week and yet also it was relaxing too. I was a little worried that it was too far to go for a week and that we would either be tired at the end or not see as much as we wanted to but I was wrong. Having a chauffeur guide really meant we made the most of our time; with most other companies this would have been too expensive for us! The hotels were lovely too.

Many thanks for all your work!

Best wishes to you and the company. We will definitely recommend you to anyone we hear that is travelling to Sri Lanka and if we travel there again will be getting in touch!

Bryony Bambrough, UK (October 2015)

  • A Great 2 week trip our guide Ranjith was a great element of the trip was very friendly and very knowledgable on all aspects of the country, the fruits, the roads every part.

Thank you for a great trip!

    Vishal Katelia, UK (October 2015)

  • We just wanted to let you know how much we enjoyed our trip! Everything was arranged beautifully! Hotels were the best. Our driver was absolutely fantastic!

We have already recommend your company to friends! Thanks for doing such a great job!

Frank Gena Costello, Qatar (October 2015)

  • Wow, what a fantastic holiday! from the first contact with Sarah, she has been professional, friendly and always prompt in responding to emails. She created the perfect itinerary for us.

When we arrived in Colombo, Paul met us with a smile and was very courteous and made me feel very relaxed and comfortable right from the start. The whole holiday ran very smoothly. Paul came up with lots of brilliant ideas of places to visit, things to eat and things to do. He started as a chauffeur guide but he is more than that he is a historian, a story teller and most of all he is now a good friend. He looked after us and made us feel very safe. We will miss him lots!

This has been more than just a holiday Paul has shown us the real culture of Sri Lanka and it truly felt like home. The beautiful country and a fantastic experience. Thank you to Sarah and our good friend Paul!

Jon Prest Natalie, UK (October 2015)

  • This was a holiday that we had saved for a long time + for a special occasion (my 50th) so there was a lot of expectations riding on it. Just want to say Thanks to Sarah for organising everything so perfectly and to Shiral for following through (well most of) the itinerary + making it really special. We will not forget the holiday or the people of Sri Lanka. Isthuthi! (Thank you)

    Varsha Rawsthorne, UK (October 2015)

    Sri Lanka

Known as the ‘Pearl of the Indian Ocean’, Sri Lanka offers travellers palm-studded beaches, rolling plantations and sacred sights steeped in spirituality. With charming people, mysterious ruins and some of the best cuisine in the world, Sri Lanka’s hypnotic essence will remain with you long after you come home.

    Sri Lanka trip reviews
