I’ve waited 10 years to do my post-graduation. I dropped out of a distance education programme, because I couldn’t attend contact classes. I have been waiting for something like this. I joined this programme because it provides me a comfort level – I can attend class at my convenience. This is a great initiative [online programmes] and I greatly appreciate the efforts of the student executives. I email my concerns at midnight and a response will be in my inbox when I get back to work. The effort the support team puts to resolve our concerns is greatly appreciable.

Sayeelakshmi,

10 years of work experience now in a management role with an MNC

I’ve wanted to do an MBA for a very long time, but taking a break from work or attending contact classes for traditional distance education programmes were not possible. I opted for Bharathidasan University program because now using the Avagmah Technology platform, I can study on my laptop and smartphone whenever and wherever I want. The faculty lectures are delivered via live and recorded video classes allowing me to study at my own comfort. This course is ideal for working professionals like me who want to help grow their career further

Sai Kumar Mangapuram,

As a working professional we have to juggle with family, work and other commitments. With less time to pursue higher studies, the online platform at Pondicherry University is a boon for us to up-skill ourselves. Recommend all career-minded professionals to make use of this great facility. It is one of the best resource available in India for distance education

The technologies that Avagmah presented was quite innovative and very well adapted to the requirements of recreating the classroom in a digital space. The idea was to take our faculty and their expertise to locations across India, in a more effective manner. You can be a part of the IIMB classroom using even a mobile phone. If you look at it from the institute end, as faculty, we are able to interact with these students one on one and replicate a lot of the real classroom experience that we have in IIMB in a virtual space. So, I would say it is low cost, simple and certainly very effective. Read More as infrastructure constraints that most schools in India have. If any school wishes to be on the forefront of education and be more relevant to meeting the needs of the students, it is absolutely necessary to leverage the power of technology. View Less

Online Class: Film Appreciation

Course Description

‘Film Appreciation for Modern Audiences’ is intended as a journey through the world of film. It is a sampling of the thought and accumulated critical opinion that forms the basis of the modern stature of 100 years of film-making–as art or culturally important dramatic work.

If you love film, then this course will help you learn more about film analysis, film reviews and discussions, period genres and movements in film style, and more. It will provide you an informed opinion that will hopefully make your enjoyment of the film medium deeper.

This course may be useful for professionals who need to be informed and conversant about the film-industry; for the layman who wants to know as much as he/she can about the world of film for personal enjoyment; or for the student, hoping to become familiar with the ‘lay-of-the-land’ for film-criticism.

    WHAT IS DISTANCE LEARNING?

Distance learning, also known as correspondence education or home study, is a form of education where there is little or no face-to-face interaction between students and their instructors. Distance learning students usually study from home, instead of attending physical classes.

Some other features of distance learning include the following:

    • Study material is delivered to students via post, courier, e-mail, or the internet.
    • Assessments are carried out by means of written assignments, exams, and/or portfolios of evidence.
    • Academic support is provided to students through various channels, including telephone, post, e-mail, and instant messaging programs.

    Study distance learning

Click on the image to view full-screen.

Fill in your details and a Student Advisor will call you back

What are the advantages and disadvantages of distance learning?

The main advantage of distance learning is that it presents students with a flexible alternative to traditional classroom-based education.

Here are some of the other advantages:

    • It gives students greater access to education. Students who are unable to attend classes due to disabilities, or due to family responsibilities, may be able to further their studies via distance learning.
    • It is more affordable. Students can save money by not having to travel to classes.
    • It gives students the option to work and study at the same time. Because distance learning students are free to study according to their own schedules, they can easily fit in their studies around their work commitments.
    • It allows students to study at their own pace. Students won’t be under pressure to keep up with the rest of the class, and they won’t be held back by slower students. They can also choose how much time to spend on each section of the course material.
    • It allows students to choose from a wider variety of courses. Students aren’t limited to studying courses that are offered by academic institutions in their geographical areas.
    • It helps students to develop valuable skills. Students will be able to improve their self-discipline, sense of responsibility, time management, and independent thinking skills by studying largely on their own via distance learning.
    • It presents students with fewer distractions. While the social aspect of campus life often distracts students from their studies, distance learning makes it easier for students to remain focused.

    Study distance learning

Despite all the advantages, there are also a number of disadvantages to studying via distance learning:

    • There is no face-to-face contact with teachers or lecturers. However, many distance learning institutions provide students with academic support via telephone, e-mail, post, and instant messaging.
    • There is often minimal interaction with other students. However, students may be able to interact online, or they may decide to form their own study groups.
    • It requires high levels of self-discipline. In most cases, there won’t be anyone checking up on students to make sure that they get through their work on time.

How do I know whether distance learning is the right choice for me?

Distance learning is a great option for those who want to further their studies, but are unable to attend classes on a regular basis. However, distance learning is not the right choice for everyone – it is best suited to those who are self-disciplined and self-motivated.

Distance learning might be the right choice for you if:

    • You have a disability that makes it difficult for you to attend classes.
    • You have work or family responsibilities that prevent you from attending classes.
    • You live far away from a campus, or you have problems with getting transport to a campus.
    • You are self-disciplined and self-motivated.
    • You have good time management skills.
    • You are able to work independently, and you don’t need someone to check up on your progress all the time.

Smart Desks: Collaborative Learning Desk and Tables #collaborative #learning, #modular #desks,

    #

SMARTdesks® Collaborative Learning Desk and Table Systems: Computer Desks and Conference Tables with Unlimited Design Possibilities

TAO, the yin-yang circular table, is lightness chasing darkness. You can’t have lightness without darkness. One defines the other, and one cannot have one without the other. Both are present, but in dynamic balance, in the moment.

RIO literally means “river.” The shape describes the flow of two working together. As two are seated at RIO, they are acting within the framework of yin-yang. Dynamic balance is found in this extension of the circular yin-yang.

  • The Power of 3— Exponential Flexibility for Active Learning Environments

TriO’s three table top sections suggest groupings for team work, but also imply privacy in the context of a digital commons area. This encourages focus and engagement, with flexibility—the watch word in project-based learning.

Technology users can power up from six power outlets and 6 USB power outlets. Additional technology can be stored in the center column with convenient cable management. AV technology stored in the console may be access from locking vented doors in the base, or from the hinged top.

  • Customize for your technology and space plan
This freestanding collaboration conference table is engineered for easy technology integration. Choose your colors to suit the interior design scheme. Edge treatment may be a simple PVC with radius corners, or polyurathane edge that simulat4es wood, but is more comfortable and resists nicks and dings of heavy use. Monitor attaches with wall mount. Cable ways organize the installation and hide clutter. Rear side can also be set up for use with monitor and lounge seating.

  • Trapezoidal elements that make collaborative conference rooms interactive
These mobile trapezoidal tables make triangles, hexagons and large conference tables. They may be accessorized with pop-up data ports, laptop power ports, cable pass-throughs and more. Customize to your taste in a wide range of laminates with PVC edges, or 3D thermofoil and contoured edges. Ask our Design Center for ideas and space planning floor plans to explore the possibilities.

  • Any small nook can be a huge collaboration space
Boost has a small footprint, but a large technology organizational space. The flipIT lift motorless monitor mount supports a nice sized screen all can see, and the HuddleVu video switching system lets the presenters change on the fly with a touch of a button. Give your meetings a Boost!

  • Exchange revolutionizes collaborative learning spaces
Each Exchange table element is a right triangle with a curve to the left or right of the user. Buy them in mirror image pairs to construct shapes with reflective formal balance, such as triangles. Buy them alike to make radial symmetry, such as pinwheels, hexagons, and facing rectangles. People collaborate over the corners of the designs, or side-by-sidein teams. Change up the shapes using the same Exchange elements!

  • Collab—designed in collaboration with Ivy League thought leaders
Our client chose this equilayteral triangle collaborative shape, and then we went to work on the robust column in the center, under the table, that lets IT integration and access, eliminating clutter. The space was core drilled, and we provided layout shapes that could be placed in the room to plan for the power to come up through the columns—even before the actual tables were manufactured. flipIT laptop safes were specified with lids that were made to match the grain of the laminate chosen. special directional microphones were integrated for open dialog for each one in the space. Richly stained wood moulding finishes the edging. Created custom. Just like yours can be.

  • Piano: SMARTdesks original computer conference table
Originally designed as a line-of-sight conference table, Piano integrates LCD screens with flipIT monitor mounts and features access to cables and small components in its central technology well by lifting its signature Piano lid. Its shape works well for teleconferencing with one screen and one camera with all faces in view, and data displays that give context for visual cues when people are looking at their screens. Screens are never obtrusive, but can be folded under the table instantly to reduce visual clutter all the more. Custom made for each client.

  • How do you make curved ampitheater arrangements with modular tables?

The answer is the radical Pi. Based on the geometry of the circle, not the rectangle, Pi Collaboration Tables nest together like links in a serpentine belt to accomplish arrangements that defy description. And these gently curved rows are easy to arrange, and rearrange as needs change. May also incorporate flipIT laptop safe or monitor mounts for multi-use classrooms.

  • Collaborative Learning Furniture for Corporate Office Conference Spaces and Higher Education

Sheppard Software: Fun free online learning games and activities for kids

    #

I stumbled upon your fun interactive geography games from a link on the Massachusetts Geographic Alliance Website. Since then, your games have become quite a hit with my competitive colleagues!
–Candice Gomes, Education Outreach Coordinator, Boston Public Library (Sheppard Software’s geography games were featured in the Boston Public Library’s 2006 Exhibition on Mapping)

Terrific online educational games, especially geography.
    –Dallas Children’s Museum

First, let me say I love your website! I have students with learning disabilities that need multiple way to learn math, and your site fills the bill! – Darrin, Rose Park Elementary in Billings, MT
Awesome site. it is the only reason I am passing my World Geography class! –Stephen
Our preschool teacher just sent us homework with this new website on it! My twins love it – they are 4 1/2 and can’t get enough! The sounds, the action, so many choices and things to do. I bookmarked this for them and have sent the website to numerous friends and best of all it’s FREE!
Thank you for such a wonderful learning tool. — -Cherie Ventola

Let me say that you guys have an awesome website. I stumbled across your site one day, and it has been the easiest, most effective, and really the most fun method for learning geography that I’ve found. –David Weaver

I am thrilled to have stumbled upon your site! As a homeschooling mom, I love to find sites that encourage brain activity and reinforce the facts I teach during learning time!
The range of information is wonderful. Keep up the fantastic work!
    -Mrs. JaNell Hancock

    Your games are AMAZING!

Your website has SO much to offer!

This site is exactly what I have been looking for! I have four children within five years of age and they can all play your games! I love that you can choose your level of difficulty. The games are colorful and simple, not cluttered like some. The instructions are easy to understand and they cover basic learning that can be neglected with other “too busy” games. I can’t believe what a blessing it is to have stumbled upon this site! I looked up “kindergarten math games online.” This is the first one that I actually enjoyed navigating around in and that actually kept the kids’ attention without discouraging them.

This site will be a daily part of our learning! The kids were fighting over who could take the next turn at the learning game! It is reinforcing everything I am trying to teach.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU.

    Lessons Learned – guidance from Knoco Ltd #lessons #learned, #lesson #learned,

    #

    Knowledge Management Reference

    Lesson Learning

The lessons learned process is a key part of KM – where new knowledge and new learnings are identified through activity and review, and incorporated into future work practices. It seems a simple concept, yet many of our clients are unhappy with their Lessons Learned process. Maybe they have a lessons database, but no lessons are coming in. Or they have a lessons database, and it s full of rubbish. Or they have a lessons database full of good quality lessons, and yet nothing ever seems to change, and the same mistakes are made over and over in the business. So why does Lessons Learned seem so difficult to get right?

The answer, it seems, is linked to another of our observations – organisations in which KM sticks and consistently delivers business value tend to be characterised by the ability to execute with discipline and rigour.

We are beginning to come to the view that a lesson is not an end in itself. A lesson is a temporary step along the way to a process, or to a process improvement. Therefore a lessons database needs to be replaced by a Lessons Management System – something that forms a temporary home in a workflow, rather than a permanent repository.

Think about a lesson coming out of a Retrospect. What have you learned? Generally you have either learned how to do something for the first time, or you have learned a better way to do something (or of course, if the project was a disaster, you have learned a new way NOT to do something). So the lesson points to one of two actions

    • 1. Document the way of doing something – ie write a process or procedure, or
    • 2. Document the better way of doing something, i.e. write a process or procedure improvement, which can then be evaluated and implemented.

This second point – process improvement – is implicit in the third question of the After Action Review – why was there a difference between what we expected, and what actually happened . The team followed the process, there was a difference from expectations, and therefore changes need to be made to the process. If there are no differences, then the process works perfectly, and we need to make no changes. You can generalise this by concluding that Learning has to lead to change . If there is no change, there has been no learning. A lessons learned system needs to feed through into process change, as shown in the figure below. If this cycle is going to work, then we need, as part of our Knowledge Management Framework. the following things.

    • – Activity review needs to identify not just lessons, but actions (and the actions have to be executed – see point 5). We see this in the learning system at BP Alaska, where each lesson is accompanied by an action, and by the identification of the document (manual, procedure, guidelines) which needs to be updated. There also needs to be quality control of this step.
    • – The lessons management system drives an automated workflow, so that new learnings and process improvement suggestions and actions are forwarded to the relevant process owner. The process owner can also validate the lessons, and make sure they are real learnings, not one person s opinion.
    • – There needs to be ownership for each key process, and these process owners need to be held accountable for reviewing all lessons and updating the processes that they own. This is built into the system used by the UK Ministry of Defence Procurement, and process owners who don t update their process are given a nudge by a high ranking officer. This ensures follow-through on learning.
    • – Once the process or procedure is updated, the lesson can be removed from the Lessons Management System and archived as part of the paper trail that tracks why changes were made. The active lessons database then only contains pending lessons, which aren t yet incorporated into practices and guidelines, while closed lessons are archived.
    • Lessons Management System, to ensure that the process improvement suggestions that arise from lessons are reviewed, and are closed out.

People seeking knowledge now need to look in only two places for knowledge – the corporate guidelines, procedures and best practices, and the pending lessons. There s no need to wade through hundreds of past lessons, because all the good ideas are already incorporated into the guidelines. Excellence in following through to turn lessons into actionable process improvement is therefore a defining characteristic of learning organisations, and in these organisations we seldom if ever hear the claim Lessons Learned doesn t work .

    Essential Information

A doctoral program in psychology usually requires 5-7 years of schooling beyond the baccalaureate degree. Online doctoral degree programs do not significantly differ in time or curriculum requirements from campus-based programs. However, online programs are typically hybrid in format, combining virtual courses with required campus-based or practical experiences; some programs require a residency.

Doctoral programs in counseling psychology are offered as Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) and Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) degrees. Applicants need a baccalaureate degree in psychology in order to be considered.

    Course Topics

A student earning a doctoral degree in counseling psychology online will be expected to complete classes covering the following topics:

    • Ethical and cultural issues in counseling
    • Addiction theories
    • Counseling techniques
    • Intervention practice
    • Marriage, family and addictions counseling
    • Adolescent and childhood counseling
    • Group therapy
    • Recovery strategies

    Dissertation

Students are required to prepare and defend a dissertation based on independent research projects. Since research, statistics and completion of the doctoral dissertation are completed independently, an online delivery method is appropriate for a student working toward a doctoral degree in counseling psychology.

Online Learning, Residency and Practicum Requirements

An online doctoral degree program in counseling psychology also requires students to participate in groups, classes and seminars online. Many distance learning programs require periodic attendance at seminars or orientation sessions held at the main campus. Some Ph.D. programs may require students to spend additional time, up to one year, in residence. In addition, most online doctoral degree programs integrate practicum and internship experiences.

    Licensing Requirements

Completion of clinical and internship work is required in order to be eligible for licensure. Graduates need to pass a state licensing exam in order to become clinical psychologists providing counseling services.

Most online doctoral programs in counseling psychology prepare students for licensure through a combination of online courses and in-person internships and/or residencies. Programs usually require completion and defense of a dissertation that includes independent, original research.

    Methodology

Don t you wish you could understand the Qur an directly? In Arabic? Without translation? Free live training reveals how to read Arabic in 21 short days!

How many times have you asked, “Why is learning Arabic so hard even though it’s supposed to be easy?”

A few? A dozen? At least once?

And how many times have you found an answer that actually gives you hope in your own ability to master it?

Exactly. Because HERE is your answer.

If you’re looking to understand the Qur’an when you stand in prayers this upcoming Ramadan, you NEED to attend this free web-class.

It’s free AND packed with more than an entire YEAR’S worth of university Arabic.

Yes, because Arabic has a CORE and CENTRAL theme that can be taught in an incredibly short period of time.

Knowing this CORE puts you head and shoulders above other students who spend YEARS studying the language as a series of disconnected rules and long lists of words.

Did you know that the majority of meanings in Arabic don’t even come from words.

    1. Vowels
    2. Patterns
    3. grammatical structures

In this free web-class, you will learn how to master the core of how Arabic ACTUALLY works by focusing on the MECHANISM that governs the conveyance of “Non-word meanings”.

What in other languages requires separate words to communicate, Arabic does it through single vowels, entire configurations of vowels (what we call patterns) and grammatical structures.

That is, the WAY in which words are combined together results in meaning ABOVE AND BEYOND the meanings you get from the individual words.

    I’ll share with you:

    > How to END low motivation and eliminate confusion surrounding the language.

    > The NEW way to master vocabulary without tedious memorization

    > How to reduce the entire language into just two issues: “sequence not determining grammar” and the “lack of ‘is issue.

    > How the Arabic language RESOLVES these two issues through two VERY SIMPLE solutions that can be summarized in a sentence each.

    > Plus a whole lot more

It’s hard to keep your enthusiasm for learning high when you’re continuously taught the basics again and again.

Told to memorize endless lists of vocabulary

And taught rules that you really don’t understand and have no earthly idea of why they’re even important

Or how they can ever lead to a better understanding of the Qur’an and Hadith

While one, two or more Ramadans come and go and you’re still stuck at the same level. Year after Year.

That’s what this system is designed to help you avoid.

Learn how to dive straight into the core of the language and focus on the aspects that matter the most.

    > Be exposed to what TRULY makes Arabic superior and unique and become emotionally connected so you never give up

    > Learn in a way that FEEDS your natural desire to learn and keeps you ENTHUSIASTIC

    > Get a complete BIG PICTURE understanding of the entire language so new rules instead of overwhelming you actually excite you because you can see HOW they tie into the big picture

All you gotta do is register here and then show up on the live training.

Then click the link below and register for this free training today.

Join me and let me show you a one-of-a-kind approach that s working really, really well.

To apply to the CWU Graduate School, prospective students can use the new on-line application form .

The M.A. in Online Professional and Creative Writing enables graduates to develop publishable writing in multiple genres, establish a professional writing profile, advance in the workplace, and continue to MFA or PhD programs. With mentorship from award-winning writers working in poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction, and from experts in professional and technical writing, rhetoric, and research methods, they can develop custom-fit courses of study and can finish in four quarters.

The Education Specialist (EdS) in School Psychology Summer Cohort graduate program prepares students to work as certified school psychologists in K-12 schools. Coursework is completed during the summer on the Ellensburg campus and online during the academic year. Graduates are prepared to offer a full-range of school psychological services, including assessment, consultation, and intervention for academic, developmental, and behavioral concerns.

The Master of Education, Higher Education program is designed for candidates with an interest in working in administrative positions in institutions of higher education, civic organizations, non-profit organizations, national government organizations, or the social sector. Program coursework provides students with a strong grounding in leadership / management / organizational development with particular attention to the higher education context.

    Master of Education: Literacy

The Master of Education Literacy (formerly known as MEd. Reading Specialist) program is designed to allow candidates to pursue graduate-level study in the various levels of literacy through an online format. The successful candidate will be able to work as a Reading Specialist or Literacy Coach.

The Master Teacher, M.Ed. is a graduate program for classroom teachers intending to advance their careers or assume positions of leadership within their schools. The program allows current teachers to focus on an area of emphasis in the P-12 classroom setting. Key components of the program are student choice, allowing you to design your own program, and flexibility. The program can be completed entirely online, depending upon the area of emphasis you select.

CWU has been approved by the HECB (Higher Education Coordinating Board) to offer, through the Department of Advanced Programs, the School Administration Masters and Residency Certificate Programs in an entirely web-based format. This online program will offer the same quality educators and rigorous coursework Central is known for, now in a convenient online delivery system.

The master of education with specialization in special education is designed to allow students to pursue graduate-level study in the various areas of special education. The program is delivered online, with the core courses offered in conjunction with the Master of Education: Literacy.

The master of science specialization in Athletic Administration is focused on the types of knowledge and skills designed to enhance one’s effectiveness as a coach or as a K-12 athletic administrator. It is not a sport marketing or sport management program. Students applying for this program are expected to have an undergraduate degree in health and physical education or extensive related practical experience. Because the requirements to become K-12 athletic directors vary between school districts, students intent on pursuing careers in athletic administration should check into local school district athletic administration requirements.

The Information Technology and Administrative Management (ITAM) Master’s of Science (MS) degree provides a one-year degree for post baccalaureate students to develop essential skills to enhance organization competitiveness. This unique degree bridges the gap between information technology and administrative management. The program focuses on leadership, communications, supervision, budget planning, entrepreneurism, and ethics, as well as applied IT management skills in emerging technologies.

The program has a common core curriculum, then students choose between three specialization areas:

    • Administrative Management
    • Cybersecurity Management
    • Information Technology

    CTU Distance Learning

    Distance Ed

Are you hungry for theological education?

Are you ready to become a CTU Distance Learner?

All graduate study is demanding. To be successful, students must be willing to set aside and spend the necessary time on their studies (plan on 3-4 hours per credit- hour per week for any course) and on mastering technological challenges they will inevitably face. CTU is ready to help you experience success in this adventure in learning, but you have to be ready and willing to put in the time and work required to meet course demands.

    BASIC SKILLS TUTORIALS ARE AVAILABLE

CTU provides a series of free online modules that offer tutorials and information, so that you can learn Essential Skills for Theological Education as you come into our graduate programs: Computer Skills, Research Citation Skills, Writing Skills; and Presentation Skills. As soon as you are accepted as a CTU student and receive your CTU Student ID number, you will have access to these modules and can start working your way through them. Completing these modules is required for all new MAPS degree students and will help to set you up for success.

STUDENTS AND FACULTY IN ONLINE COURSES TOGETHER BUILD A LEARNING COMMUNITY

Taking courses in an online format is an integral part of the CTU Master of Arts in Pastoral Studies (MAPS). What can surprise students new to distance education is how in each course students and professor quickly form an intimate, invigorating, rich learning community. Discussion forums engage you in sharing about your readings, exchanging ideas, asking questions, and offering insights from your particular social and ministerial contexts. It is a wonderful experience to participate in these courses where students bring their ministerial experiences from around the country… and beyond!

BUT DISTANCE LEARNING IS NOT FOR EVERYONE!

Not all people are suited to learning online. If you are considering taking the CTU MAPS degree through our combination of online courses and summer residencies, reflect on the following technological and attitudinal requirements:

    You will need to have:

    1) a computer readily available that is connected to the Internet (preferably with a high-speed connection);
    2) a browser (the free Mozilla Firefox browser works well with our learning platform);
    3) updated anti-virus program if you are working on the Windows platform (free anti-virus programs are available);
    4) word processing software and basic skills (Microsoft Word is the common software used at CTU, although other programs can produce Word-compatible text files);

    Cerebral Palsy

Maybe someone at your school has cerebral palsy — or perhaps you have it and you’ve been dealing with it your whole life. As we become more aware of appearance and body image. it can be tough to be in a wheelchair or to have people tease you about the way you walk. But lots of teens with CP don’t let it hold them back. They do just what everyone else does.

    What Is Cerebral Palsy?

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a disorder of the brain. Normally, the brain tells the rest of the body exactly what to do and when to do it. Because of how CP affects the brain, a person might not be able to walk, talk, eat, or move the way most people do.

CP affects a person’s muscle tone and ability to coordinate body movements. People with CP have trouble controlling their muscles. How a person is affected all depends on what part of the brain is involved.

How Does Cerebral Palsy Affect People?

The three types of cerebral palsy are:

    1. Spastic (pronounced: SPASS-tik) CP is the most common type of CP. People with spastic CP can’t relax their muscles or the muscles may be stiff.
    2. Athetoid (pronounced: ATH-uh-toid) CP affects the ability to control the muscles of the body. A person’s arms or legs may flutter and move suddenly.
    3. Ataxic (pronounced: ay-TAK-sik). People with ataxic CP have problems with balance and coordination. Their movements may seem shaky.

People with CP can have mild cases or more severe cases. It all depends on how much of the brain is affected and which parts of the body that section of the brain controls. If CP affects both arms and both legs, a person might need to use a wheelchair. If CP only affects the legs, someone may walk in an unsteady way or have to wear braces or use crutches.

If CP affects the part of the brain that controls speech, a person with CP might have trouble talking clearly or not be able to speak at all. Some people with CP also have learning disabilities or behavior problems, though many don’t have these issues. Others can have medical problems like seizures or epilepsy. or hearing impairment.

    What Causes It?

In most cases, doctors don’t know exactly what causes CP. They do know that it’s the result of damage to the brain — either while a baby is in the womb or in the first few months or years after the baby is born.

Babies have a higher chance of having CP if they are born early or if they’re very underweight at birth. Babies who don’t get enough oxygen during or right after birth also have a higher chance of having CP. So do babies who need to be on a ventilator (a machine to help with breathing) for several weeks or more after birth.

CP is not contagious, so people can’t catch it from other people. Even a mother with CP can’t pass it on to her unborn baby.

    What Do Doctors Do?

Doctors diagnose CP when kids are young, so by the time people reach their teens, they usually know they have CP and are used to living with it.

With CP, the problem with the brain will not get any worse as people get older. For example, someone who has CP that affects only the legs won’t develop CP in the arms or have problems with speech later on.

Although CP doesn’t get worse over time, how it affects someone’s body can change as the person grows or develops. For example, some teens with CP may develop dislocated hips (when the bones that meet at the hips move out of their normal position) or scoliosis (curvature of the spine).

Because CP affects people differently, there are lots of ways to treat and manage it. Some teens have only mild problems with movement. Others need crutches or wheelchairs to get around. Doctors, parents, teachers, therapists, and the person with CP all work together to develop the best treatment plan.

Teens with CP may work with these experts:

    • a pediatric orthopedist
    • a developmental pediatrician who looks at how the person is growing or developing compared with other teens
    • a pediatric physiatrist (or rehabilitation physician), who helps kids with disabilities of many kinds
    • therapists, like physical therapists to help with movement, occupational therapists to help with skills like handwriting, and speech therapists

Some teens with CP take medicines to relax their muscles (in the case of spastic CP) or to help control seizures. And some might have special surgeries to keep their arms or legs straighter and more flexible.

    Coping With Cerebral Palsy

Puberty can be especially challenging for people with CP. Rapid growth can cause weight gain and clumsiness in any teen, but can make it even more difficult for someone with CP to move around. A person’s muscles can become tighter as the bones grow, which can restrict movement even more.

If you have CP, what you’ll do depends on your CP. One thing you can do is to get more involved in your medical care wherever possible. Keep up with your appointments, including any physical or other therapy visits. This is a time when your medical team will want to keep an eye on you and adapt your treatment or therapy as you grow.

Many guys and girls with CP can do the same sorts of things that other teens do, like enjoying extracurricular activities, listening to or playing music, hanging out with friends, reading, going to the mall, and dating, to name just a few.

Helping a Friend Who Has CP

If you know someone who has CP and you’re wondering how to help, just treat that person the way you would anyone else. Some people with CP might need extra assistance once in a while, like when reaching for something. Help out — just as you would with anyone else — without making a big deal about it. If you can’t understand what a person with CP is saying or if it takes longer to do things, give him or her extra time to speak or move.

And don’t be afraid to talk to a friend about what it’s like to live with CP. Everyone wants to fit in, and being in a wheelchair or having other physical problems can make someone self-conscious or feel left out. So if you know someone with CP, try to be welcoming and include him or her in what you’re doing.
