Best Day to Buy Airline Tickets: Secrets to Finding Cheap Flights

The Top 5 Secrets to Scoring Cheap Flights

If you like to travel and like to save money, this is the column for you.

I’m about to explain some of the elements involved in the complicated business of airfare pricing. It may sound dull, but it’s not; if anything, it’s kind of weird how the whole system works, but that’s the way it is.

And the more you know about this system, the easier it is for you to find cheap flights every time you shop.

Best and less travelPlay

Seems only fair. After all, the airlines go to extraordinary lengths to get you to pay more; they know all about your shopping habits, including when you want to travel and even where you want to go, and they price their fares accordingly.

So let’s level the playing field a bit, okay?

For more air travel news and insights visit Rick’s blog at: http://farecompare.com

Here are the five things you should know to score cheap flights:

1. Very few seats are ever on sale — so speed is of the essence.

Did you know that on most planes, passengers pay ten different prices for their tickets? It’s true, and of course that means there are very few of the cheapest seats ever available –including those advertised in the airline’s advertised airfare sales.

Which means you have to grab the good deals the moment they are available. This is getting harder and harder, because everyone is an amateur travel agent these days, meaning you have tons of competition for those cheapest seats.

The Best Airfare Deals

And speaking of jumping, that brings us to…

2. Know the airline hurdles you have to clear.

To get the best of the ten different airfares on a plane, you have to follow the rules — or “hurdles,” as I call them — and the more hurdles you clear, the cheaper the fare.

One hurdle may be a Saturday night stay, which isn’t much of a problem for most vacationers (or leisure travelers), but most road warriors don’t like being away from home on the weekends, which is why they pay more for business travel.

Another hurdle is the 14-day advance purchase window; if you just have to get away right this minute, chances are you will pay for your impatience with higher fares. Note that some of the low-cost carriers such as JetBlue and AirTran usually make it a little easier, with only a seven-day advance-purchase requirement.

Yet another hurdle: the dreaded blackout dates. Most sales have them, and it usually means you can’t fly when you really want to, such as the dates surrounding holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas. If you want to save, you work around these dates (or fly around them).

Best Days to Buy Airfare

3. One day stands alone as the best day to shop.

If you’ve been reading my column for any length of time, you probably already know the answer to this, but if not, I won’t keep you dangling: the best day to shop for airfare is Tuesday. And let me get even more specific: shop on Tuesday at about 3 p.m.

Here’s why: usually, when an airline wants to launch a sale, it will do so late Monday. When the other airlines see this, they immediately go into competitive mode, and begin lowering their own prices to match the first one’s sale.

All the airlines that plan to join in on this “matching” will have completed the process by early Tuesday afternoon, so by 3 p.m., shoppers will have the most “good prices” to choose from.

Note: usually that original sale ends in just two or three days, and the matching fares of the other airlines will disappear by then as well, if not sooner. Remember, if all those sale prices disappear in a single day, that’s it, they are gone. The airline is not going to put up a fresh supply of cheap seats to meet the demand. It just doesn’t work that way.

4. Certain days (and times) are cheaper to fly than others.

Look, the airlines know they can easily sell out all the seats on planes that go to popular destinations during the most popular days of the week to travel, so they’re not going to drop prices on those seats, are they? No, they are not.

But they would like to fill up the seats on the less popular days. Otherwise those seats are a total loss for them. Which is why you will find the best deals are available for flights on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Now, when it comes to the days everyone wants to fly — Fridays and Sundays — it figures that those are almost always the most expensive days to fly. Adjust your vacation schedule accordingly.

Best Days to Fly

The best time of day to fly? Well, since no one wants to get up at the crack of dawn — you guessed it — that’s when to fly. And generally, the dinner hour is cheaper too. And always, the overnight flights.

5. Today’s airfare shoppers need help to find the best deals.

This is one of the weird things about the airfare pricing system: sometimes, even if you follow all the rules, and clear all those hurdles, the airlines still might not give you the best price. Their thinking will run something like: “Maybe if we give this seat just another day or two out there in the marketplace, someone who wants it even more than you do will be willing to pay our current price. Let’s see if that happens.”

So, you could sit there chained to your computer, checking the prices minute by minute, waiting for a price drop — or you could sign up for an airfare alert. But be sure these are “real time” airfare alerts that let you know the instant prices change. The sooner you know about a deal, the better chance you have of actually snagging it.

Forget Aesop; his tortoise wouldn’t have a prayer of snagging a deal in today’s complicated game of airfare pricing. It’s you hares out there who will score — if you keep these tips in mind.

This work is the opinion of the columnist and does not reflect the opinion of ABC News.

Best And Less Travel

It’s nice to ask yourself these questions before starting to plan your vacation; do I want to relax? Do I want adventure or a learning experience? Do I want to get away from my job? Once you know the answers to these questions, then you are ready to plan your trip.

Vacations are needed for our emotional, physical and mental balance. Vacations give a person a chance to relax, renew his energy, and free him from his daily routine. Vacations could be far away or close to home. Wherever the vacation may be, it does the same thing. It is the satisfaction that is more important than the destination.

Generally, there are some different types of travel according to activities involved. Here are some of them:

1. Responsible Travel. Traveling doesn’t always have to be self-serving. With responsible travel, one could have enjoyment as much as respecting the local environment and the people.

2. Rediscovering nature. Rediscovering travel is all about nature and everything in it. It revitalizes the soul while smelling and feeling nature.

3. Tribal cultures. In today’s world of high technology, it is wise to experience the simpler life of the tribal people who live close to nature in the same way for the past thousands of years.

4. Responsible Diving. Diving not only let travelers appreciate what is down the sea but also making the traveler more aware of the conservation effort.

The country one is planning to travel to also leaves a great mark on the traveler’s diary. Here are some of the most popular destinations today:

1. Thailand. Thailand is also known as Siam. It is an Asian country bounded by Burma, Laos, Cambodia, and Malaysia. Behind the back draft of Thailand’s jungles of bamboo, rubber trees and vines are the Five-star hotels of modern conveniences. In some parts of the country, elephants are still being use to lift timbers and buffalos are still being use in farming.

2. China. China is now the second largest country and fastest growing economy in the world. Most parts of China are still unexplored by tourist; however, the eastern portion is now popular to western tourist. First class hotels now offer highest class of amenities and dozens are still being built/

3. Italy. Italy is a boot-like shape country bounded by Switzerland, Austria, France, and Slovenia. The main attraction of Italy is St. Peter’s Square where the Pope resides.

4. Caribbean. Caribbean is an archipelago of islands, 2000 square miles across. Most of the islands are plateaus and eruptions of underlying mountain systems. It has nice beaches of crushed coral and white or pink sand and the water at the shore is a deep blue.

The success of any vacation will not depend by how much the traveler spent or its destination. It is how the traveler enjoyed it and how he was able to achieve his primary goal of “getting away from it all.”

Best And Less Travel

Anytime you plan to travel somewhere, it requires planning of some sort. When your traveling is going to be on a cruise, you often need even more planning because you won’t be in control of the transportation.

Although planning your cruise is not the most difficult thing you’ve even done, it can be difficult if you aren’t sure of what you’re doing. Talk to someone you know that has been on a cruise and can give you tips. Friends who’ve gone through what you are planning can often give you the best honest advice. They can tell you what a good price is, what kind of accommodation you can expect for that price as well as give you information about what the cruises consist of as far as activities. They can also give you tops about certain travel agencies and what kind of business they are.

Of course, every cruise company is different as well as their individual company policies. Before you book on any vacation, always shop around. You may thing two cruises by two different companies are both the same. There may be some major differences, however. Each cruise company owns several different cruise liners or ships. You can often choose an older one and save some money.

The internet is also a wealth of knowledge on many aspects of cruises including cruise companies, ships, prices and general traveling advice. Many people even choose to make their reservations online, finding this very time saving over driving to an agency. They will show you instant availability as well as tables that can show your price based on different dates and times.

If you know what time of year you are taking your vacation, you have an advantage. If you have to take it at a specific time, this may limit some of your options. However, if you have plenty of advance notice, you can still find many great cruise offers. Once you’ve narrowed your choices down to the exact place you want to go and compared the prices, you are ready to start booking your cruise. The more flexible you can be with your departure date and time as well as return date and time, the better deal you stand to get.

It’s a tough decision knowing exactly when to book and when to wait. Some times if you book far in advance you think you got a great deal and later see the price go down. However, if you wait, you may miss the vacation of a lifetime. As a rule, you should book your cruise at least six months in advance. If you are going during the peak summer months and your location is a popular destination, you may need longer. Either way, your agent or a friend with travel experience can help you as well.

How to Travel the World on $50 a Day or Less

How to Travel Anywhere in the World on a Budget

“The bible of budget travel.” – BBC

Do you want to travel more but think it s expensive? Would you like to find a way to make travel more affordable?

I m here to show you all the tricks, tips, and unconventional ways you can afford your dream vacation whether that s a trip around the world, a vacation to Disney, or that week long trip to Japan. Wherever you want to go, you can get there without breaking the bank.

I used to see the commercials, watch the ads, and read the magazines and think I ll never be able to afford to travel. There just didn t seem like anything I could do to ever change that. Even if I could get that extra vacation time, hotels, flights, resorts they were all too expensive.

But then I went to Thailand and everything changed.

In 2005, I was on a vacation to Thailand with my friend Scott. We were in Chiang Mai to visit some temples and one day, I left Scott to visit a large temple outside of town and shared taxi with five other strangers (three Canadians and a couple from Belgium).

On the way up to the temple, we started talking. The Canadians were on a break from work and traveling until their money ran out and the couple was using some of their vacation time to travel for a month. Then there was me I was using my entire year s vacation time (in January!!) to be in Thailand.

As we talked about travel, vacation time, and cultural differences, I realized that these 5 people were living my dream. All I wanted was to travel more and these people were actually doing it.

A few days later, I turned to my friend and said When we get home, I m going to save up, finish my MBA, quit my job, and travel the world.

That night I walked into the one book store on the island and bought a travel guide to Southeast Asia. I didn t know when I d travel or where I d go but buying that book and holding it in my hand made my decision seem real. There was no going back. Meeting travelers who were following their dreams made me realize there was no reason not to follow mine and why you can t follow yours either.

HOW TO AFFORD AND PLAN THE TRIP OF A LIFETIME

You only ever see fancy resorts, hotels, expensive cruises, and tours advertised, right? Why is that? Because only big companies have large advertising budgets and the more expensive travel you buy, the easier it is for them to make money. Small, mom and pop guesthouses, local tour operators, and small local restaurants don’t have the money to pay the fees big media demands so they get ignored.

But they exist and once you know how to find them, they make travel possible for the majority of people (people like me and you) who don t have thousands to spend on a week in Paris.

I know this because I’ve spent the last ten years traveling the world using them to make my trips affordable without sacrificing comfort. Actually traveling showed me that there was a lot more to travel than advertised, and that there are a plethora of ways to travel on a budget of $50 USD per day or less.

In my New York Times best selling book, How to Travel the World on $50 a Day . I ll show you step-by-step exactly how to find the deals, tips, and companies that make travel affordable for all. This book takes the information on my website and goes into much more detail was well as features tips, tricks, and country breakdowns never talked about here on the blog! It condenses ten years of travel into one easily referenced book.

I m going to teach you how to become a master traveler so you ll have the lifelong skills to always get the most value from your money, afford any trip, go anywhere, and stop imagining yourself in exotic destinations because you ll actually be there. If that s sound like something you want, you re in the right place! Here s what the editor of National Geographic Traveler said about this book:

Matt Kepnes does the math and shows you how to make this dream a reality, from how to save for an extended trip, which credit card to get, how to handle banking on the road, to a breakdown of how to save on accommodations, transportation, food, and activities. Matt proves that for most Americans, traveling is cheaper than staying home.

10 Practical Tips To Make Business Travel Less Miserable

Trying to cram hog-sized carry-ons into tight overhead spaces and drinking two bottles of wine before 8 a.m. local time will not serve you well when traveling for work. Here are some practical tips, as well as some apps and websites, to make business travel run more smoothly.

Between increased security and reduced airline services, there isn’t much thrill left in business travel, as I was recently reminded during a two-week, 20,000-mile trip. But you can reduce the agony if you plan appropriately. Here are 10 up-to-date tips for minimizing the hassle of business travel:

Before You Go

1. Pack for today’s overhead-bin reality. Since airlines started charging for checked baggage, travelers have resorted to extreme measures to ensure their bags make it on the plane. But most people get it wrong. Look around the boarding area. Almost everyone has a big roller bag and a briefcase. But one roller bag can fill an entire overhead bin. If your flight is full and you aren’t among the first on the plane, you will have to gate check that bag. A better strategy is to take two more equal-sized bags. One should be the maximum size that will fit under the seat and the other should be flexible so it can fit into any odd space available between roller bags in the overhead bin. Using this strategy, I have never had to gate check a bag in 20 years of travel. An added bonus—you can save the extra fees airlines charge you to board early in order to cram your huge bag on first, which is just a rip-off. For a list of what this luxury and other “premium” services will cost you, take a look at airline services fees on Kayak and SmarterTravel.

2. Select the right clothes (for men). Pack only one color of pants and one (matching) jacket. This way you can optimize the accessories you need to take. The same shirts and socks will match, so you can reuse some of the items if you come up short. This vastly reduces the amount of stuff you need to pack. Also, if you want to exercise, take some of the new lightweight sneakers that take up zero room in your luggage. Wear the heaviest things you are taking (if weather permits) to minimize the amount of stuff you need to drag around with you.

3. Store items in a designated location. Organize your luggage and especially your computer bag/carry-on so that items have a designated place. This makes it easy to locate gear like cables and connectors, which are prone to get lost. A quick “pat down” inventory check will suffice to make sure you didn’t leave something behind.

4. Take appropriate electrical plug adapters. Anyone who has felt the panic of realizing they brought the wrong plug convertor just as their computer battery dies, won’t make this mistake twice. Avoid the panic by consulting websites like Countryplug. which show you what you need to bring…before you leave home.

5. Arrange for voice and Internet access before you go. Depending on where you travel, Internet access can be great or it can be pathetic. And having to pay $30 a day for an Internet connection in a $300-a-night hotel is not unusual. So buying an international data plan for your mobile device may be cheaper than paying daily local rates. Then, use your mobile device as a hotspot for data. Check with your carrier or with an international telecom service before you go.

6. Recharge gadgets using USB ports. Almost all devices have some sort of USB connection cable through which they can be recharged. Rather than drag along a spaghetti of cables, I find I can get by with just one plug when I charge my gadgets using my PC’s USB ports. This comes in particularly handy in the many international hotels that think that electrical outlets are an extravagance.

At The Airport

7. Pick the “right” security line. This is more of an art than a science. The best line is usually not the shortest one. Two things to check are the efficiency of the personnel manning the line and the mix of travelers ahead of you. Several things to watch out for include families with small children, unconventional luggage which will likely be inspected, and anyone who looks like they haven’t been in an airport security line in the last 10 years. Picking right can save you literally hours if you travel often. For humorous look at this situation, check out this clip from Up In The Air .

8. Create an on-boarding routine. This is particularly important for long-distance flights. For example, organize all your reading material in a separate bag (within your carry-on) before you get on the plane. When you reach your seat, take the bag out and put the carry-on away. I am amazed by the amount of time wasted by people who arrive at their seat and start rummaging through their bags to find all the things they want for the flight, while fellow passengers steam in the aisle waiting for this ritual to end.

On The Trip

9. Develop a routine for sleep and eating. Eat before you get on the plane to maximize the amount of time you can sleep, particularly for red-eye flights. Transcontinental and transatlantic flights are often too short for a full night’s sleep. So maximize your Z’s by “preparing for bed”—brushing your teeth and getting into comfortable clothes—before the flight. Go to sleep as soon as you hit the seat. Scoring a window seat avoids being disturbed by fellow passengers during the flight.

10. Eat and sleep right. I find that eating properly and getting at least a minimum amount of sleep makes travel much more bearable. Staying away from alcohol and heavy foods on trips, especially on airplanes, also helps. I wonder how my seatmate in 37F made it through the day after finishing two bottles of red wine before 8 a.m.

Bon voyage…see you in Paris.
