Cuba’s Travel Change: What To Expect From Airlines And Cruise Lines

Walter Bibikow via Getty Images

NEW YORK (AP) — NEW YORK (AP) — In a story Dec. 17 about travel to Cuba, The Associated Press reported erroneously the number of Americans who were authorized to travel to Cuba last year. The number was 124,000, not 170,000.

A corrected version of the story is below:

US travel industry carefully eyeing Cuba tourism

US travel industry has been quietly looking to expand into Cuba; plans could now accelerate

By SCOTT MAYEROWITZ

AP Business Writer

NEW YORK (AP) — Cuba was once a haven for sun-seeking American tourists. Beautiful beaches, lively casinos and late-night dancing made it the perfect getaway, only an hour’s flight from Miami.

But the Cuban revolution led by Fidel Castro and the subsequent Cold War embargo of the communist island nation put an end to that.

President Barack Obama’s announcement Wednesday of plans to re-establish diplomatic ties with Cuba doesn’t suddenly lift the ban on U.S. tourism. It does, however, give hope to airlines, hotel chains and cruise companies — all which have been quietly eyeing a removal of the travel ban — that they soon will be able to bring U.S. tourists to the Caribbean nation.

“Cuba is the largest country in the Caribbean, so there’s some exciting possibilities,” said Roger Frizzell, spokesman for Carnival Corp. He said “some infrastructure for cruising already exists in the country,” although other issues “need to be taken into consideration if this market opens up.”

A handful of international companies already operate in Cuba. For instance, Spanish hotel chain Melia has 26 properties on the island. U.S. companies, like Hilton Worldwide and Marriott International — the two largest chains by rooms — say they welcome any future opportunities to include Cuba in their rapidly growing global footprint.

“We will take our cues from the U.S. government, but look forward to opening hotels in Cuba, as companies from others countries have done already,” Marriott CEO Arne Sorenson said via an emailed statement.

While most Americans are prohibited from traveling to Cuba and spending money there, close relatives of Cubans, academics and people on accredited cultural education programs can visit. And there is a tiny, but robust business in transporting people to Cuba.

Most operators are tiny storefront travel agents in the Miami area with names like Alina’s Travel Co. and Gina’s Travel Services. Those agents then charter planes from carriers like American Airlines to transport the groups.

About 124,000 U.S. citizens flew nonstop to Cuba last year, up from 77,000 in 2012, according to the Department of Commerce.

“Once people get a glimpse of Cuba, they always want to see more,” said Katharine Bonner, a senior executive at Connecticut-based tour operator Tauck, which runs tours there under a cultural exchange license. “Americans are very curious about a country that is 90 miles off our coast but has been off limits for so long.”

It is that isolation, in part, that is so appealing. There’s no McDonalds, no Starbucks. Bonner said once travel opens, there will be a rush to see Cuba before its gets “Americanized.”

“It’s almost like a country that has been frozen in time,” she said. “There’s going to be a desire to see Cuba before it changes.”

The challenge for the industry will be to offer trips to Cuba for eager tourists without alienating anti-Castro Cuban-Americans who stay in hotels or take cruises elsewhere. Regardless, for now, senior Obama administration officials say that travel to Cuba for tourist activities will remain prohibited.

U.S. airlines have been quietly dipping their toes in Cuba’s warm waters for years.

American Airlines dominates many of the routes to Latin America with its hub in Miami. It’s run charters to Cuba for more than 15 years, according to spokeswoman Martha Pantin. It now operates 20 weekly flights from Miami to Havana, Holguin, Santa Clara and Cienfuegos and from Tampa to Havana and Holguin.

JetBlue Airways started flying Cuba charters in September 2011. It’s a very small part of the airline’s business; just three weekly flights on Airbus A320s with 50 to 80 customers, either to Havana or Santa Clara.

CEO David Barger told The Associated Press last year that the charters are a way of “just understanding what happens, if in fact there’s a normalization.”

Delta Air Lines, which operated more than 240 charter flights between October 2011 and December 2012, said it has no immediate plans to fly to Cuba. But, spokesman Anthony Black noted that “having served there through our charter operations, the groundwork has been laid for us to possibly serve the market if an opportunity becomes available.”

Airlines are granted the right to fly international routes through bilateral agreements between U.S. and foreign governments. A similar agreement would need to be reached with Cuba first. There is one dating back to 1953 — it was last updated on July 30, 1957 — that allows specific routes from New York, Washington D.C. Houston, New Orleans and the Florida cities of Miami, St. Petersburg, Tampa, Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach.

The one immediate change for licensed travelers: they will now be able to return to the U.S. with $400 in Cuban goods, including tobacco and alcohol. Limited amounts of Cuban cigars might be the new hot souvenir.

Discount Bus Lines Offer Cheap Interstate Travel

Clark Howard Friday, May 2 nd 2014

Forget the plane, forget the train. What about the bus the next time you have to travel?

If you re old enough, you probably remember when America was covered wall-to-wall by Trailways and Greyhound. Both of those companies essentially went through the meat grinder when airline deregulation occurred. In the wake of deregulation, it suddenly made more sense to fly than drive for long routes.

Cheap fares starting as low as $1

Bus companies never seemed to figure out that the real market was on routes that were within a 250-mile radius of a given starting point. Eventually, one British company called Megabus realized that and got into the domestic market. Now there are multiple competitors including Bolt Bus and GreyHound Express .

These companies offer regional hub routes that started in the Northeast, went to the Midwest and now offer some West Coast travel. All of these new bus services offer cheap fares starting at $1 per ride for a limited number of people on each bus, while the other passengers pay real fares that are still quite cheap in the $10-$20 range.

These are not your father s Greyhound buses. They don t stop in every little nook and cranny on a route; they run non-stop between metro areas in typical four-hour runs. (Some routes may be longer.) The buses all offer free onboard wifi. They tend to be clean with comfortable seats. Certain carriers are introducing double-decker buses with more room and supposedly more comfort. This is a truly viable option for cheap travel.

A lot of our country will never have enough population density to warrant high-speed trains. And trains are much more expensive than buses. So if you are looking to get somewhere and your first reaction is, A bus. well, think again. This can be a potential real deal.

My youngest producer Joel and his wife took MegaBus from Atlanta to New Orleans (nearly nine hours roundtrip) and they paid $11 and change each roundtrip. That s roughly $6 one way! MegaBus gets the thumbs up from Joel and his wife for price and timely pickup/dropoff. But be warned that the bathrooms may not be the cleanest, particularly for ladies.

Don t forget to check sites like Wanderu.com and BusTripping.com to comparison shop multiple bus lines and find the cheapest options on ground transportation.

Travel Agents Sail Free with New Promotion From Carnival Cruise Lines

on 09 September 2013.

Carnival Cruise Lines is offering travel agents an opportunity to enjoy the “Fun Ship” vacation experience first-hand on a complimentary basis through its new Travel Agent Complimentary Cruise Promotion.

From September 12-26, 2013, travel agents may visit GoCCL.com, the line’s travel agent Internet portal, and select from a variety of sailings departing between September 2013 and January 2014.

As a special reward to agents who have signed up for the line’s Travel Agent Rewards and Carnival Passport programs, as well as to encourage new enrollees, travel agents enrolled in these programs can submit their cruise request on September 11, 2013, one day prior to the promotion launch.

“During our Carnival Conversations events, we heard from agents that one of the best ways for them to sell the Carnival product would be to simply experience a cruise just as their clients would,” said Joni Rein, Carnival’s vice president of worldwide sales. “We wanted to give agents the opportunity to sail on the ‘Fun Ships’ with their friends and family while also rewarding and encouraging participation in our Carnival Passport and Travel Agent Rewards programs by offering early access to this exciting new promotion for members.”

Travel agents may view available cruises and request their preferred sailing by visiting GoCCL.com. Upon receiving a booking confirmation number, travel agents then call Carnival at 1-800-438-6744, extension 78830, to secure their reservation.

Cabin space is limited and will be granted on a first-come, first-served basis. As part of the terms and conditions of the program, travel agents may receive one complimentary cruise and bring up to three guests in their stateroom depending on availability. A non-refundable $50 deposit for first and second guests is required, which will be converted to an onboard credit upon boarding.

As part of the Carnival Conversations travel agent outreach program, Carnival recently extended its Interline rate program to travel agents and introduced last-minute travel agent rates. These initiatives were implemented in an effort to provide travel agents with a variety of discounted sailing opportunities to experience the Fun Ship product.
