12 Tips to Make International Travel Easier #travel #deals

Blog Post

Being in a strange place can be invigorating and eye-opening. Some of my favorite travel memories include an early-morning run along the Danube River in Budapest, touring the temples of Angkor Wat, and having late-night drinks and steak in Uruguay.

There have also been plenty of business trips where the only sites I saw were those visible from my hotel room window, because I was too busy running from one meeting to another.

Regardless of what type of trip you’re on, there are several steps you can take to ease an overseas journey. Here are 12 of my favorite international travel tips:

Hotel business cards. The first thing I do when arriving at a hotel overseas is take a business card from the front desk. That way, if I ever get lost, I have the name and address of the hotel in the local language. Large populations around the world speak English, but having something in a local language that I can show locals and taxi drivers is an extra bit of insurance.

The six-month passport rule. The expiration date on your passport is actually a bit deceiving. The U.S. lets you use your passport up to the date inside the cover. However, several countries will deny travelers entry if the passport expires in less than six months. Why? If for some unexpected reason you get stuck overseas longer than planned, that country wants to ensure that you have a valid passport to eventually travel back to the United States. To avoid any problems, I always renew my passport during a downtime in travel, about nine months prior to the expiration date.

Getting cash. The way to get cash is usually an ATM, but many U.S. banks charge steep fees for using an ATM that is out of network. You can take out a large amount of cash at the airport ATM so you pay that fee only once, but it’s never advisable to carry large sums of cash. Plus, you risk having too much local currency left over at the end of your trip. Charles Schwab and Fidelity both offer checking accounts that have no minimum balance requirements and reimburse you for all ATM fees, including those from overseas.

Credit cards. The best exchange rates are often found using your credit card. However, many credit cards will tack on a foreign transaction fee, sometimes as high as 3 percent. It’s a pointless fee that no traveler should ever pay. The Chase Sapphire Preferred card and Platinum American Express are two of the cards that don’t levy this fee. Also, never have a hotel or restaurant convert a charge into dollars first. It’s a bad deal.

Fraud alerts. Notify your credit card company’s fraud department of what countries you will be visiting and on what dates. This way, they won’t think your card is stolen and shut it off just when you need it the most. Be mindful of any countries you might be changing planes in; you might need to make a charge during your layover, especially if there’s a delay.

Credit card chips. U.S. credit cards rely on magnetic strips on the back that are swiped at vendors. In Europe, cards have a chip embedded in them which—when paired with a PIN—are used for purchases. It’s a much more secure way of charging goods, but hasn’t been adopted in the States. Most vendors overseas can still swipe your card. But train ticket machines, gas stations, and other machines where we pay without interacting with a person often reject cards that are swiped. Getting a chip and PIN card from a U.S. bank is hard. But many credit cards are now coming with chip and signature technology.

Medicine. I always carry an eye mask and earplugs in my medicine bag because you never know what your hotel room is going to be like. But I also carry Advil, NyQuil, Imodium A-D, Tums, and a handful of other key medications. Yes, even the most historic European neighborhood has a drugstore. But do you want to be running around Germany late at night, trying to translate “diarrhea”? If you’re heading to third-world countries, stocking up on the right drugs is even more important. Many travelers fill a prescription in advance for the antibiotic ciprofloxacin and bring it with them just in case.

Travel alerts. It’s a good idea to check the State Department’s travel warnings and alerts. It’s also smart to print out the address and contact information of the local embassy.

Foreign airline sites. If you are on a tight budget—and don’t have to book through your company’s travel department—look at overseas airlines’ sites in their home countries. I recently booked a ticket from southern Italy to northern Italy on Alitalia. The airline’s U.S. site wanted twice the price of the Italian site. I’m not fluent in Italian, but Google Chrome translated every page for me. I paid in euros, using a credit card with no foreign transaction fees.

Data roaming. Set up your cell phone to avoid international data roaming. Many business travelers have an international calling and data plan. But infrequent travelers don’t. The biggest costs can come from transmitting data overseas. I was in a remote part of southern San Diego last summer, and my cell phone provider sent me a text alert welcoming me to Mexico. Apparently, I had jumped onto a cell tower in Tijuana. I immediately shut off my data roaming, turning it back on only once I was out of that area.

Google Maps. I have a great sense of direction and rarely need a map. I know others aren’t as lucky, though, and have come to rely on their cell phones to get around. If you don’t add a data plan to your phone while abroad, you can still jury-rig a crude version. Using the Wi-Fi in your hotel, plot out a few routes you plan to walk that day. Then take a screenshot of those maps. You can later find the photo, zoom in, and follow the path. It’s not ideal, but it’s a work-around.

Unwanted local currency. I figure out on my last night how much cash I will need and then set aside the leftover money. At checkout the next morning, I take that cash and ask the hotel to apply it to my bill and then pay the remaining balance with my no-foreign-transaction-fee credit card.

Will Gordon Ramsay make good his escape? #travelicity

Will Gordon make good his escape?

The programme’s been set up as an escape from the last 12 or 18 months of being targeted by the tabs. It’s also an attempt to ditch the Glasgow hardman image that’s become a bit of a millstone, and show a softer side to the chef who’s recently spoken again about a troubled upbringing dominated by a violent father .

People have been urging Gordo to get back in the kitchen for some time now. but the message was rather more to leave the cameras behind. He doesn’t seem able to turn down the exposure (and presumably, the fees are pretty persuasive in troubled times ) but in an attempt to salvage his reputation, he’s turned to a different style of programming akin to the Stein or Oliver culinary travelogue / personal journey model. As his production company, Optomen, has it. we’ll gain insights into the real Gordon Ramsay. We’ll see a very different side to the nation’s favourite chef: more thoughtful, confessional, and open-minded .

We’ve become used to seeing Ramsay in charge, that hectoring macho caricature he’s become thanks to Hell’s Kitchen. Kitchen Nightmares (particularly the USA version), even, to a lesser extent, the F Word. so this format is quite a departure for him – and for us.

He approaches a subject he admittedly knows little about with some humility, apprenticing himself to various Indian chefs, first on the Mangalore Express train throwing in references to his early days, as he remembers starting out 20 years ago, chopping onions – now I’m back there and struggling to cook a vegetable curry through a bout of travel sickness, where he admits conditions are tough for for this weak-bellied Scot (although the inner macho man can’t resist challenging the other chefs to pull ups on the train).

He takes orders well, from legendary chef, Imtiaz Qureshi. constructing an epic goat biryiani – an egg, inside a quail, stuffed in a chicken, inside the goat – and, despite glimmers of that rather manic Ramsay in the introduction to the great man – the King Korma, dog’s bollocks, dog’s nuts, Yes?! – it’s more refreshing than I imagined watching him working under someone, showing respect, reminding us he’s done his time over the years, earned his stripes. When Qureshi isn’t happy, Gordon, remembering, perhaps, the formidable wrath of an old boss. quips, In situations like this you keep your mouth shut and finish the job.

Later, when cooking for Seema Chandra, he’s even more out of his comfort zone, struggling to cope in an unfamiliar kitchen, merely the subject of amusement, rather than terror, to chefs he cannot scream at. You can feel the panic building as he struggles to communicate, pointing upwards and doing star jumps in an attempt to mime a need for star anise. In the end, the dishes are not finished with the trademark, DONE! , rather, his attempts at pumpkin puree and the like were sampled with encouraging comments such as promising and has possibilities . Not really what the big man is used to and, to be fair, he accepted the criticism so graciously I, surprisingly, found myself, if not exactly rooting for him, at least hoping his finished dishes would be a success.

But what to make of this new, gentler Gordon (you’ll be able to tell him yourself on February 1 when he starts tweeting )? Will it last? Are the glimpses of a more human Ramsay enough to prick our interest in him again? In other words, is this attempt to shed the hardman image going to work?

Nobody making federal minimum wage can afford a two-bedroom apartment #make

#

No full-time minimum-wage worker can afford a 2-bedroom apartment in any US state

The absolute least that an employer is legally allowed to pay an employee for an hour’s work varies across the country. but one fact remains constant: In no state does working 40 hours a week for minimum wage enable a person to rent a median two-bedroom apartment.

That’s according to new research by the National Low Income Housing Coalition covered by T he Washington Post. Across the country, it reports, even full-time workers would have to make about or more than twice as much to afford a typical home.

In states such as Alaska, Washington, Colorado, Florida, Virginia, Illinois and most of the Northeast, workers would have to make over $20 an hour. Workers in California, D.C. and Hawaii are the hardest hit by the price of housing: They need to earn a whopping $30, $33 or $35 an hour, respectively, to afford a two-bedroom.

The federal minimum wage is $7.25.

Some renters can still find individual apartments that charge less than the median rent and so remain relatively affordable. The trouble is, they are often substandard or unsafe and, regardless, there aren’t nearly enough of those to meet demand. Scarcity has been an issue for decades .

Likewise, not all workers are subject to the federal minimum wage. Some are, as five states, including Mississippi and Louisiana, have no official minimum wage, and two more, Georgia and Wyoming, have a minimum wage of $5.15, or about $10 less an hour than full-time employees would need to make to be able to afford a two-bedroom. In those places, the federal minimum wage applies, with a general exception for workers who receive tips.

By contrast, states such as Connecticut and California mandate that even entry-level workers receive about $10 an hour, while cities and, increasingly, states such as Illinois and New York are phasing in a new minimum wage of $15 an hour. That minimum supersedes the federal one.

The Fight for $15, a worldwide effort to raise wages and strengthen unions, has successfully led to better pay in many places since its launch in 2012. and a proposed federal minimum wage of $15 an hour is now part of the Democratic Party platform. According to these numbers, however, even that wouldn’t make housing affordable.

As things stand, an American making the federal minimum wage of $7.25 would have to work 94.5 hours a week, or more than two full-time jobs, to afford a typical two-bedroom rental.

The Post notes that “many of the occupations projected to add the most jobs by 2024 pay too little to cover rent. These are customer service representatives, personal care aides, nursing assistants, home health aides, retail salespeople, home health and food service workers who make, on average, between $10 and $16 an hour. as a result, more than 11.2 million families end up spending more than half their paychecks on housing,” money they could otherwise direct toward transportation, education, food, clothing or savings.

In a preface to the report. U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison, D-Minn. writes, “Each year, Congress spends about $200 billion to help house American families. A full three-fourths of these resources go to help subsidize the homes of the richest families through the mortgage interest deduction and other homeownership tax benefits.”

Meanwhile, the report points out, federal funding for housing assistance programs has actually declined by three percent in the last seven years.

Millennials are making a big mistake by not owning their homes, says one financial expert 12:22 PM ET Mon, 24 April 2017 | 00:49

Some business owners argue that raising the minimum wage will lead to higher prices for consumers, and some economists argue that it could depress job growth or even end up eliminating positions as it leads to more automation. A comprehensive 2016 study from the National Employment Law Project, however, found that the economists’ fears aren’t justified.

Its authors declare that there is “no correlation between federal minimum-wage increases and lower employment levels, even in the industries that are most impacted by higher minimum wages. To the contrary, in the substantial majority of instances (68 percent) overall employment increased after a federal minimum-wage increase.”

And a 2017 poll found that bipartisan majorities of Americans now favor raising the minimum wage.

Make Your Own All-Natural Deodorant Stick or Spray – One Good

    #

    Make Your Own All-Natural Deodorant

    Make deodorant

Several months ago I posted a recipe for making your own deodorant . It was mainly in response to discovering that those hard to remove armpit stains ( see how to get rid of them here !) are caused by the aluminum in commercial antiperspirants! I d worked hard to figure out how to get rid of those stains! I didn t want them coming back!

While I have been perfectly happy with this deodorant some people would prefer not to have to put their fingers into it to apply it and have requested a SPRAY or SOLID alternative. Your wish is my command. 🙂

This recipe makes a BIG BATCH of deodorant, so I decided to cut it in half and it turned out to be the perfect amount to fill two empty deodorant tubes.

    Make deodorant

    Homemade Solid Deodorant

    1/2 cup baking soda

    1/2 cup cornstarch

10 drops each of Lavender, Lemon and Frankincense Essential Oils

If you don t have essential oils on hand, don t fret. This will work just fine without the oils. The oils are an added BONUS. 🙂

    Make deodorant

Add the coconut oil, and beeswax pellets to a small saucepan. Slowly melt over VERY low heat. Once melted, remove from heat and add baking soda, and corn starch. Mix with a spoon until smooth and creamy in consistency, then add the essential oils and pour into your containers. Let stand to cool and solidify.

I was very pleased at how well this turned out. It has a great consistency and smells divine! But most importantly, after wearing it for a full day, it was every bit as effective as any commercial brand I have purchased.

And on a somewhat related, but not really related, subject .I just have to offer kudos to the makers of Old Spice for making the labels on their deodorant tubes so easy to take off! It makes repurposing containers SOOOO much easier! Labels that are practically FUSED to the bottle are one of my PET PEEVES!! (Makers of Dawn are you listening?)

    Make deodorant

OK I just had to get that off my chest. I feel better now. 🙂

Now, for those of you sprayers out there .here s a recipe for you! Another all natural option with essential oils as an added benefit.

    Make deodorant

    Homemade Spray-On Deodorant

    1/2 cup witch hazel

1/4 cup aloe vera gel (or juice)

    1/4 teaspoon baking soda

10 drops Clary Sage Essential Oil (one of the most effective deodorant essential oils that has a crisp, refreshing scent!)

    Make deodorant

Add witch hazel, aloe vera, baking soda and your favorite essential oils to a small spray bottle and shake well before each use. Spray on underarms. If you don t like the wet feel of it you can stand in front of a fan for a few seconds to help it dry or you can gently pat it with a dry towel. I didn t do either. I just sprayed it on and went about my day.

(Important Note: Clary Sage Oil should be avoided during pregnancy.)

I also tested this deodorant out on my own armpits and loved it. When I first sprayed it on it felt cool, refreshing and almost tingly! I thought the wetness feeling of it might bother me but after a minute I forgot I even had it on. And after wearing it all day long, no notice of any odor or wetness. Success!!

Whether you prefer to rub-in, rub-on, or spray .now you can make your own homemade deodorant that s safe, effective and downright enjoyable to use!

    Comments

    Make deodorantRose says

I made the solid deodorant recipe last night- test running it today. I used a blend of tea tree, myrrh, lavender, and a tiny bit of rosemary and patchouli (I don t like an overly sweet scent but I accidentally used too much tea tree oil, and probably went a bit overboard with variety trying to achieve a cool-sweet-ever so slightly musky scent).

So far I like the consistency a fair bit, although I may use more beeswax and possibly shea in there next time to improve feel and reduce residue. I don t like how you can feel the graininess of the baking soda when you rub it on, it makes it a little .sandy/chunky which is not pleasant.

So far I ve had it on since last night without washing, I reapplied this morning, but neither yesterday nor now, late afternoon, have I smelled. Will be going to the gym tonight which will be the real test.

Definitely considering giving the spray on recipe a shot!

12 Tips to Make International Travel Easier #planning #a #trip

    #international travel
    #

How to Make Money with a Travel Blog or Website #budget

    Start Your WordPress Blog

How to Make Money with a Travel Blog or Website

We all want to make money online. That s why we create blogs and read sites like this. I make money in travel. After porn, people spend the most money on travel online. It s a huge niche with a lot of high-ticket items. There s good money and lots of readers to be found in the online travel business, and that is why so many people get into the travel niche. There are literally millions of travel blogs out there, and there are a lot of travel sites out there as well. So how do you set your travel web site apart from the others and start making money with it? You have two choices and each has pros and cons.

    Create A Travel Blog

The first way is to start a travel blog, and become a travel personality like Rolf Potts or Rick Steves. A blog revolves around you, your stories, photography, and personality. People follow you because they believe in what you do, and because you inspire them to do more. If you can relate to your readers fears and travel dreams, you can grow your site pretty quickly and get a lot readers. You become a travel resource and an expert.

Yet this method requires a lot of work. You need to update your site constantly, use social media, and network with people in your field. You need to be outgoing, you need to have personality, and you need to be your own brand. You have to put yourself out there all the time and connect with your audience. There are a lot of good travel personalities out there, such as:

    How do you get traffic?

Getting social media traffic is old news to us all. We all know the importance of Facebook and Twitter. We know we need to tweet and have a Facebook fan page to promote our content. But for travel, where can you go to make yourself known? What else can you do that is specific to travel? The best two places to meet travelers and network with PR firms are:

    • Travel Blog Exchange This is the premier travel networking site. Anyone with a blog as well as PR firms and companies have a profile and interact here. It s a great place to network and they run a yearly conference where you can meet other travelers.
    • Travel Bloggers Group in Facebook A Facebook group where people share links, help, and advice.

How do you make money this way?

    • Speaking Gig s As you become an expert in your field, you can earn money through speaking gigs. These gigs usually include free trips, which is better than paying for your own trips.
    • Ebooks A lot of travel blogs make ebooks as a way of making money. I have four, Almost Fearless has a couple, as does Indie Travel Podcast, and the Art of Non-Conformity. Ebooks are a good source of income as readers view you as a trusted source and are more likely to buy these when you publish them.
    • Affiliate Ads Selling products is a good way to make money as we all know and I don t think I need to get into this much.
    • Advertising Though there are not a lot of private ads outside of text links in travel, companies are becoming clued in to the power of travel bloggers and you find more willing to buy ad space on your site. Well-established blogs have no problem finding ads to help pay the bills.
    • Consulting After you have reached success, you can tell other people how you did it. I know quite a few bloggers that consult, not only in travel but in other niches too.

    Create a Destination Website

The second way to make money in travel is to create a destination based website. Instead of working social media and being a personality, you pick a spot in the world and become THE expert on it. Some good examples are Travelfish. All About Cabo. and Best Tropical Islands. These sites are static pages that only need to be updated to keep the information current.

There are a lot of pros to creating a destination website, especially if you don t want to put your life out there. You can set your site and forget it, you don t have to be a personality, you can stay quiet, and overall it is less work to maintain. Once it is built, it s built. Plus people are more likely to buy products from destination websites because they are generally able to find exactly what they re looking for.

On the other hand, you have to be targeted on your focus and growth is limited once you get to the top of the search engines. After you rank #1 for all your keywords, you are done. You may not grow a lot in terms of traffic, but at least you don t have to continue to do work unless you want to add new content.

If you choose this option, you ll spend most of your time on SEO and building links. Destination sites don t lend themselves to a big community. After all, not many people want to read about London everyday. But you can become the leading resource on the net and that will still bring in an audience and gigs. A great example of this is Newyorkology .

How do you make money this way?

    • Affiliate ads Google traffic is the best traffic to monetize. People visiting your site will most likely buy something.
    • Adsense Adsense offers the same benefits as affiliate ads, except that you have to get your readers to click on links. My website, How to Travel the World, brings in a lot of adsense money, and it doesn t even rank high for many keywords.
    • Guides Many destination websites sell their own guidebooks, podcasts, and apps. This is a very lucrative field because people can t take their laptop with them. Creating portable guides are something you can sell to people. Travelfish s apps are a good example of that.
    • Private Advertising As a premier destination website, you can go to hotels, bars and restaurants for advertising. Once you prove you are number one, they will probably advertise with you. All About Cabo is a good example of a site that does well with private advertising.

    Are there other ways?

Unless you suddenly want to start a magazine, guidebook company, or get serious venture capital, this is it. Every person I have encountered in the online travel business makes money using either option 1 or option 2. You can try to create something different, but without a lot of resources or time, you will probably fail. These two options offer the best rewards for the least amount of money and time.

Making money in travel is not difficult. A lot of people, including many travel bloggers, get dismayed because they don t strike it rich right away. They expect their blog to take off right away or their destination based site to rank #1 on Google in two months. You have to put in more work and effort, especially with companies with deep pockets, because there is so much competition in travel. The websites I ve listed show can make good money with a travel website. You just have to stick around long enough. Most people don t but if you do, you ll make bank.

For many, however, this feeling is unfamiliar, as all too often air travelers are caught by wily agents and on-line sites which will overcharge just because they can. In order to fall into the first category (that is, the exulted travel-savvy price champion) then it is necessary to take proactive advantage of any internet discount available and obtain the best price possible. Another important matter to bring up is the fact that travelers so rarely realize how lucky they are to be able to reap the benefits of the many airline ticket discounts available today. Ranging anywhere from the huge savings on major international flights to smaller savings for the trips back home savings that often add up to become so significant that they are hard to ignore, the discount airfares for travelers have virtually no match in any other consumer industry today.

Puerto Rico Travel: 5 Ways To Make The Island A Cheap

Puerto Rico Travel: 5 Ways To Make The Island A Cheap Getaway (PHOTOS)

    BEN FOX

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — There may have been a time when Puerto Rico was a cheap getaway but those days are long gone. Puerto Rico is heavily dependent on imported goods and fuel and that’s reflected in prices from a taxi ride from the airport to the mojito at your hotel. And it is, after all, the Caribbean, where tourists should expect eye-popping bills in season. A six-star hotel that opened recently in Dorado, east of San Juan, advertised rates starting at $1,500 a night, ranging up to nearly $5,000. There are, of course, cheaper options. There are also things to do that don’t cost anything at all. Here are five of them:

    BEACHES

It’s an island about the size of Connecticut so there are many beaches, about 300 according to some estimates. In the capital, Isla Verde Beach is good for swimming and lolling on soft sand, groomed daily. Playita del Condado is a protected cove that is ideal for young kids and a surprisingly good place to snorkel for being in the middle of San Juan.

Things get much better outside the capital. Crash Boat, about an hour west of San Juan, is great for swimming and snorkeling. Farther west in the west coast town of Rincon is Maria’s, which has great surf. Also recommended are the beaches along the entrance to the Guanica Dry Forest Reserve as well as Seven Seas in the east coast town of Fajardo. A good tip for all Puerto Rican beaches is to go early in the morning when the water is calm and there are no crowds. Otherwise, go to Vieques, which has spectacular beaches and that are secluded even in the high season.

    EL YUNQUE

About a half-hour drive from San Juan, thanks to a relatively new toll road, is an actual tropical rain forest, the only one that is part of the U.S. forest system. El Yunque National Forest is a cool oasis on a hot day. The well-maintained trails are often shrouded in misty clouds and you can cool off in a waterfall or a river pool along the relatively easy Big Tree Trail.

    EL MORRO

There’s an entrance fee to enter the Castillo San Felipe del Morro, but the best way to enjoy this U.S. National Historic Site requires no money at all. The fort that towers over San Juan Bay, known universally as just “El Morro,” is a great place to stroll, especially at sunset. The massive rolling expanse of grass at the foot of the fort has spectacular views in any direction. It’s a popular place to picnic and fly a kite, sold by nearby street vendors.

    OLD SAN JUAN

At the foot of El Morro is the old city, the colonial heart of San Juan. In recent years, Old San Juan has been on an upswing; its cobblestone streets are cleaner and livelier. New stores, restaurants and coffee shops have opened and many of the old homes have been restored. It’s a working city, home to the governor’s office and mansion said to be the oldest in the western hemisphere as well as other government offices and an increasing number of professional firms. It’s also become an increasingly busy cruise ship port and outlet and luxury goods shops have proliferated in response.

    MUSIC AND SALSA

A good place to catch free live music several nights a week is the Plaza Mercado, a fruit and vegetable market in Santurce, a neighborhood that is also home to what are considered some of the best restaurants in Puerto Rico. The lobby of the El San Juan in Isla Verde usually has live music and dancing on weekends. The bar of course isn’t free but there’s no charge to get in. The dancers can be intimidatingly good so the less-skilled may be content just to watch the scene. A number of restaurants and hotels also regularly advertise free salsa lessons.

How To Make A Fake Return Plane Ticket

As a result of globalization and the rise of economic asylum seekers, more and more countries are tightening their borders. Policy has become stricter and the amount of immigration officers with large pinecones lodged in their butts has increased dramatically.

In order to convince these nationalistic, power hungry, and pinecone plagued individuals that you do not plan to work or mooch off of their society, it’s never a bad idea to show proof of onward travel. It also doesn’t hurt to illustrate proof of sufficient funds.

But if you’re making money with a blog like me and only ever buy one way tickets and head out with just enough cash for the next month, you’re going to need to know how to fake it.

In the following guide, you’ll learn the easiest way to fake return tickets, bank statements, proof of employment, proof of vaccination and any thing else you might need to forge.

Which Countries Require Proof Of Onward Travel?

The need to show proof of a return flight or bus ticket out of the country varies on your nationality and particular predicament. If for example you’re an American and are arriving in Laos but have a visa for Vietnam, that’s generally enough proof for the officer that you plan on leaving soon.

But in general, the following countries will almost always demand proof of onward travel; New Zealand, Australia, Laos, Costa Rica, UK, USA, Ireland, Peru and Bolivia. I m sure I ve left a few out, so let me know in the comments below.

Regardless of which country you’re visiting, it’s still a good idea to be prepared with proof of onward travel.

    Detention Interrogation

If you can’t show proof of onward travel or sufficient funds, and the immigration officer finds you suspicious, there’s a good chance you may be detained or even sent home.

I was most recently detained at UK immigration for 7 hours because I did not have proof of onward travel. During this time, 5 different British immigration officers questioned me as if I was a criminal. It was only after this marathon of questioning that I received  food and water.

On another occasion, I was only granted 10 days in Costa Rica because I did not have proof of onward travel. While I could have easily bought a bus ticket to Panama at the border, I didn’t want to waste the money. In the end, I spent way more than 10 days. Check out How To Overstay Your Visa In Costa Rica, to see how I left without any problems.

How To Fake A Return Plane Ticket

Faking a ticket and getting away with it is very simple and comes with little risk. Although you could buy a fully refundable ticket or a super cheap 20$ flight on a budget airline, it’s just too easy to fake. It’s always worked for me and countless other runaway backpackers.

    Step 1 Download Your Ticket

After buying your flight and receiving your confirmation email, simply download the reservation PDF.

Original official travel document from Norwegian Air

    Step 2 Edit The PDF

If you already have Adobe Acrobat, you can easily use this to edit the ticket.

If you don’t have Adobe or don’t know how to use it, there are many free PDF editors that you can download for free. Most editors recognize the current text font and size, and allow you to amend  any text you want.

In order to make the ticket look more authentic, research an actual return flight, its flight number, and departure date and time. Then use this information to amend your ticket.

Step 3 Print The Updated PDF

You can either print the updated PDF or save it to your email and show it to the officer on your smart phone. And that s it! The whole process shouldn t take more than 20 minutes. And this can be done to edit anything from plane tickets to bank statements.

10 Myths About Space Travel That Make Science Fiction Better

We all love to point out the ridiculous bad physics in science fiction — it’s like an awesome sport that everybody wins. (Except physics.) But the truth is, sometimes you have to violate the laws of physics to create science fiction stories that people want to watch. We asked six great physicists to name their favorite occasions when breaking the laws of physics makes science fiction better, and here’s what they told us.

FTL is a big plot shortcut, of course, since even light takes years to get from star to star. But even when Our Heroes go from planet to planet in the same system, it doesn’t take long. Heck, the Moon is our closest neighbor in the entire Universe and it’s still three days flight away. Of course, in the future we’ll have faster rockets and all that, but still. Unless your whole plot revolve around some slower-than-light ship taking decades or centuries to get to the next star over, you have to use FTL. Without it, you’d have a vvvverrrrrryyyyy looooooooong movie with nothing happening. After all, space is big. That’s why we call it that.

Pretty much only 2001: A Space Odyssey has gotten this right — you can’t have artificial gravity in space without creating spin, to use centripetal force to keep people stuck to the floor. And you’ll notice that on shows like Star Trek. when life support and power are turned off, artificial gravity somehow always keeps working. (With the exception of Star Trek VI. of course.) Air Travel Club – Tips and Tricks to Make Your Trip

    #cheap airline travel

    Cheap Air Travel Club

Travelling is hugely exciting, but can also be hugely complicated. Going somewhere you have never been or even somewhere you have been many times can be a demanding ordeal. Figuring out where to stay, what you need to bring, what to eat and local customs can be a challenge for the most experienced travelers. Not to mention negotiating the cost and getting the most bang for your buck. Luckily, we’re here to help. We have tips, tricks, and advice to make your next trip a success, without busting your budget, or being a bore.

Here are 5 tips on how to save money while traveling:

    How to Travel Cheap

Moving abroad or travelling on the cheap can be doable if you’re willing to think outside of the box once in awhile. All it takes is a little ingenuity, some internet surfing, and an open mind.

While travelling and perusing budget airline websites is a de facto option for travelling on a budget. don’t dismiss the commercial airlines just yet. Do a little comparing before you chuck them out. You’d be surprised how cheap you can get a commercial flight for if you book way in advance or at the very last minute.

You can save more if you don’t need to check anything in. Learn how to pack like a flight attendant and save not only money but time. Not having anything checked in means no waiting around for your bag to show up at the carousel.

Many countries offer prepaid SIM cards that allow you and your travel buddies to keep in touch with one another the way locals do and with local rates being applied. Roaming charges can put a major dent in your phone bills. Keep your home SIM in a safe place and use a local one so you won’t have to worry about roaming charges ever.

    Transportation

Always use only reliable and trusted car service providers. Car rental companies like Avis, Budget and others will not only cost you less but they also won t interrupt your trip with car issues. Try to book airport transportation already from your country since this way  it will be even cheaper.

Not everyone can afford to splurge on a five star hotel. Look instead for apartments for rent through services like airbnb.com or other such sites that allow you to rent homes or apartments for a fraction of the cost of a hotel room. If you’re the friendly type and want to really immerse yourself with the locals and their home life, you can opt to couch surf. It’s not for everyone, but you definitely will save a lot and make a load of friends to boot.

How to Make Airline Ticket Invitations #bing #travel #predictor

    #airplane ticket
    #

    Things You’ll Need

Open a new document in Word and click on the Microsoft Office icon in the upper left-hand corner. Click on “New” which will provide you with a left-hand menu of available templates.

Select the template for “Gift Certificates.” Choose the template that is labeled “Gift Certificate (differing colors, 3-up)” to make your invitation look as much like a real airline ticket as possible. When you download this template, the screen that opens up will be a vertical format that has three certificates, each displaying the same wording. Replace the existing wording with the particulars of your upcoming event, per the following instructions..

Replace the words “Company Name” with the title of a fictitious airline. Examples: “Fly By Night Airways”; “Anderson Family Flights of Fancy”; “Jetting with the Jacksons.” Replace the words “Gift Certificate” with the words “Official Airline Ticket” followed by the phrase “Non-Transferable” in parentheses.

Delete the phrase “This certificate entitles” with the full name of the passenger/guest. Just below this, delete the word “to” and type “Departure,” and what time your event kicks off. Below these two lines, you’ll replace the left-hand address block information with the location of the party. Leave the authorization line as-is (this is where you’ll sign your name). Enter the date of the party as the expiration date of the ticket. Add “RSVP” to the space for a number, and replace the “not redeemable for cash” wording with an advisory that passengers must confirm their attendance no later than 48 hours prior to their flight and bring their boarding documents with them.

Copy and paste your new data into the second and third certificates on the page.

Print out enough copies of this document on 20# bond paper so that each guest will receive a set of two, one of which they can keep for themselves, the other to present at the party. Keep straight edges on your invites by using a paper-cutter. Staple the pairs of tickets on the left-hand side and insert into addressed envelopes for mailing to your guests.

This post was guest blogged by Matthew Kepnes of Normadic Matt s Travel Site .

10 Practical Tips To Make Business Travel Less Miserable

Trying to cram hog-sized carry-ons into tight overhead spaces and drinking two bottles of wine before 8 a.m. local time will not serve you well when traveling for work. Here are some practical tips, as well as some apps and websites, to make business travel run more smoothly.

Between increased security and reduced airline services, there isn’t much thrill left in business travel, as I was recently reminded during a two-week, 20,000-mile trip. But you can reduce the agony if you plan appropriately. Here are 10 up-to-date tips for minimizing the hassle of business travel:

    Before You Go

    1. Pack for today’s overhead-bin reality. Since airlines started charging for checked baggage, travelers have resorted to extreme measures to ensure their bags make it on the plane. But most people get it wrong. Look around the boarding area. Almost everyone has a big roller bag and a briefcase. But one roller bag can fill an entire overhead bin. If your flight is full and you aren’t among the first on the plane, you will have to gate check that bag. A better strategy is to take two more equal-sized bags. One should be the maximum size that will fit under the seat and the other should be flexible so it can fit into any odd space available between roller bags in the overhead bin. Using this strategy, I have never had to gate check a bag in 20 years of travel. An added bonus—you can save the extra fees airlines charge you to board early in order to cram your huge bag on first, which is just a rip-off. For a list of what this luxury and other “premium” services will cost you, take a look at airline services fees on Kayak and SmarterTravel.

    2. Select the right clothes (for men). Pack only one color of pants and one (matching) jacket. This way you can optimize the accessories you need to take. The same shirts and socks will match, so you can reuse some of the items if you come up short. This vastly reduces the amount of stuff you need to pack. Also, if you want to exercise, take some of the new lightweight sneakers that take up zero room in your luggage. Wear the heaviest things you are taking (if weather permits) to minimize the amount of stuff you need to drag around with you.

    3. Store items in a designated location. Organize your luggage and especially your computer bag/carry-on so that items have a designated place. This makes it easy to locate gear like cables and connectors, which are prone to get lost. A quick “pat down” inventory check will suffice to make sure you didn’t leave something behind.

    4. Take appropriate electrical plug adapters. Anyone who has felt the panic of realizing they brought the wrong plug convertor just as their computer battery dies, won’t make this mistake twice. Avoid the panic by consulting websites like Countryplug. which show you what you need to bring…before you leave home.

    5. Arrange for voice and Internet access before you go. Depending on where you travel, Internet access can be great or it can be pathetic. And having to pay $30 a day for an Internet connection in a $300-a-night hotel is not unusual. So buying an international data plan for your mobile device may be cheaper than paying daily local rates. Then, use your mobile device as a hotspot for data. Check with your carrier or with an international telecom service before you go.

    6. Recharge gadgets using USB ports. Almost all devices have some sort of USB connection cable through which they can be recharged. Rather than drag along a spaghetti of cables, I find I can get by with just one plug when I charge my gadgets using my PC’s USB ports. This comes in particularly handy in the many international hotels that think that electrical outlets are an extravagance.

    At The Airport

    7. Pick the “right” security line. This is more of an art than a science. The best line is usually not the shortest one. Two things to check are the efficiency of the personnel manning the line and the mix of travelers ahead of you. Several things to watch out for include families with small children, unconventional luggage which will likely be inspected, and anyone who looks like they haven’t been in an airport security line in the last 10 years. Picking right can save you literally hours if you travel often. For humorous look at this situation, check out this clip from Up In The Air .

    8. Create an on-boarding routine. This is particularly important for long-distance flights. For example, organize all your reading material in a separate bag (within your carry-on) before you get on the plane. When you reach your seat, take the bag out and put the carry-on away. I am amazed by the amount of time wasted by people who arrive at their seat and start rummaging through their bags to find all the things they want for the flight, while fellow passengers steam in the aisle waiting for this ritual to end.

    9. Develop a routine for sleep and eating. Eat before you get on the plane to maximize the amount of time you can sleep, particularly for red-eye flights. Transcontinental and transatlantic flights are often too short for a full night’s sleep. So maximize your Z’s by “preparing for bed”—brushing your teeth and getting into comfortable clothes—before the flight. Go to sleep as soon as you hit the seat. Scoring a window seat avoids being disturbed by fellow passengers during the flight.

    10. Eat and sleep right. I find that eating properly and getting at least a minimum amount of sleep makes travel much more bearable. Staying away from alcohol and heavy foods on trips, especially on airplanes, also helps. I wonder how my seatmate in 37F made it through the day after finishing two bottles of red wine before 8 a.m.

    Bon voyage…see you in Paris.
