What s Wrong With This Bathroom?

When I surprised my mom with tickets to Paris, I printed out fake boarding passes to present to her.

I ve had some people ask me how I did this, and it was actually quite easy!

First, if you are looking for a way to make your First Class tickets look as real as possible, that won t work with what I used.  My tickets were obviously not real , but were informative.

I searched the one place I thought I would find really detailed instructions on building intricate boarding passes wedding websites.

Please note, the instructions for the boarding pass template are really overwhelming.  They suggest using tools, making multisided boarding passes, and making your own envelopes.  I stared at it blankly for a while.

But remember, these instructions are for obsessed brides.  I used a printer, scissors, one   page of the boarding pass template (page 3), and an envelope I swiped from a boarding gate.

I cut them out, stapled them together, and threw them into the envelope.  I swiped the language from tourism websites/books for the two places.

I m awful at these DIY tasks.  Pinterest is full of things I can never have. Still, I pin things in hopes that some day some day I will suddenly become more crafty.

But here s how a klutz easily did it:

1. Download This Boarding Pass Template

Just click on the boarding passes on that site and it ll download.  I ll wait for your download to finish.

2. Open it, and only focus on page 3

If you are crafty, by all means, poke around the template and make something really fancy (and show me!) but if you are just looking for gift tickets and aren t making wedding invitations, go to page three.

3. Change the text and insert images

This was really easy.  The text is already there, so I clicked on everything I wanted to change and edited the wording.  The pictures are slightly trickier if you aren t used to dropping images into Word (after all, it s called Word)  but here s an easy screen show of how to.

Go to Insert and choose Clip Art.  If you have your own photos you want to put in, choose picture, but Clip Art was sufficient for me!

And then search the ClipArt for a graphic that matches up with your trip and drag it onto the picture.  You can move it around as much as you want until you get it in the right place.

And here s it in the document:

You can get fancier with changing fonts and colors as your knowledge of Word allows.  But I found this basic template really easy to use.

If you want to share the boarding pass template with other people, please link to her site.  As I was trying to find it again, I found websites linking directly to her template rather than her website, which seemed to suggest they made the template.  I want to make sure she gets all the credit she deserves for this amazing idea!

She also has a template for a fake Passport. in case you d prefer to surprise someone with a trip through a series of passport stamps.

    Master’s in Film and Media Production

    Overview of our MA in Film and Media Production

    The Academy makes the accelerated schedule possible by creating an extended academic year, allowing students to complete three full-length semesters in one calendar year.

    New York Film Academy MA degree programs are offered only at our Los Angeles campus.

    Throughout the filmmaking MA program each student writes, shoots, directs, and edits eight films, and works on at least 20 more.

    ONE-YEAR ACCELERATED MA

    The New York Film Academy Master of Arts (MA) in Film & Media Production is a three semester accelerated graduate program. Designed to educate aspiring content creators, it is a hands-on, total immersion, professional course of study. Each student will create eight of their own film media projects in an array of formats and genres. They will work in collaboration on their classmates’ projects on at least 20 more. The capstone of the MA Film and Media Production program is a written thesis paper exploring the ideas and themes that are studied during the course of the entire program. MA students will have opportunities to develop and deepen their thesis papers in the second semester of their studies in Thesis Development class, under the expert guidance of NYFA’s professionally active faculty. Students will then progress to finalize their thesis work in the third semester, in Thesis Review.

    Film and media production is constantly evolving in the 21st century — and so is the New York Film Academy’s filmmaking Master’s program. NYFA’s filmmaking MA program provides creative visual storytellers with the skills needed to thrive and succeed. The intensive curriculum challenges students, develops their skills, and prepares them for the new and evolving production world of today. Students will gain experience shooting their projects on the newest in HD, film, and digital equipment, from Canon 5D to Red Dragon, as well as classic film cameras like Panavision and Arriflex.

    FILMMAKING MA: SEMESTER ONE OVERVIEW

    MA Filmmaking students begin their immersion in film production through a series of intense classes in directing, screenwriting, cinematography, and editing. These classes support a number of short film productions that quickly put students’ skills into practice and assist them with developing proficiency in the overall production process. Each student will direct four short film/media projects in the first half of the semester.

    Students will also develop their leadership and collaborative skills through fulfilling the essential roles of Director of Photography, Assistant Camera Operator, and Gaffer (Lighting Technician) on the films of their classmates.

    Dialogue production is explored in depth in the second half of the semester while classes in directing, screenwriting, and editing continue. The final project of the semester is the digital dialogue film, which students will write, direct, and edit.

    Throughout the semester students are immersed in a course about the changing formats of media production in today’s entertainment marketplace. This course prepares them to undertake production of their thesis film in semester two either as a short film or as a new, still developing format, such as webisode, or content for mobile applications.

    The combination of these classes will prepare students for the second semester and production of their Thesis Projects.

    LEARNING GOALS

    • Art, aesthetics, and technique of visual storytelling including directing, cinematography, and editing.
    • Fundamentals of film production and digital editing.
    • Survey and examination of contemporary media formats and distribution vehicles from a content creator’s perspective.
    • Fundamental training in acting and directing actors.
    • Immersion in screenwriting craft.
    • Develop an ability to collaborate with — and lead — a student film crew.

    PRODUCTION GOALS

    • Write, direct, and edit four short film/media projects.
    • Crew as cinematographer, gaffer, and/or assistant camera on approximately 12 additional films.
    • Write a short film script with dialogue.
    • Write, direct and edit a dialogue film.
    • Successfully complete Production Lab exercise.

    FILMMAKING MA: SEMESTER TWO & THREE OBJECTIVES

    The second semester of the Master of Arts in film and media production program challenges students to develop their craft artistically and technically, and to progress beyond their earlier achievements with the medium. Building upon the filmmaking foundations learned in the previous semester, students continue with their directing, screenwriting, cinematography, and editing classes.

    Film Production Lab Two, an intensive in the field production class, provides instruction in all of these areas through a series of “in the field” productions. The development of professional on-set conduct, leadership, and collaborative skills are also rigorously developed in this class.

    The branding and marketing required to make an entrance into the crowded contemporary media field is studied at length prior to production of the thesis project. This allows students time to acquire any provisions they need to successfully promote the project.

    The last film project of the filmmaking MA is the Final Film: a single production of up to 15 minutes in length, or multiple shorter media projects. It may be a short film intended for film festivals and distribution which incorporates all of the disciplines instructed throughout the semester, or a new format as studied in the Media and Society class. Current examples include webisodes, branded entertainment, short TV pilots, or commercials. The students’ ambitions and capabilities as evidenced in the thesis project are expected to increase from the first semester projects. Students will also expand their knowledge of production and collaborative abilities through acting as crew members on five of their classmates’ productions.

    Intensive classes in post-production assist the student not only with completing the final steps of the filmmaking process, but also with developing an ability to give and receive editorial and creative feedback on their project.

    LEARNING GOALS

    • Advance in proficiency in the fields of directing, editing, and cinematography.
    • Develop an increased ability to produce short films at a higher level.
    • Advance in proficiency in collaboration and leadership skills.
    • Acquire a comprehension of branding and marketing as required to promote the thesis project.
    • Develop an ability to give and receive constructive editorial and creative feedback on a project.

    PRODUCTION GOALS

    • Direct and edit a thesis project of up to 15 minutes in length (shot on 16mm film, 35mm film, or High Def).
    • Develop proficiency with the second semester equipment package.

    FILMMAKING MA: YEAR-END SCREENINGS

    The thesis project will be presented in a movie theater for an invited audience. Students are responsible for inviting all guests. This public screening is not part of the formal evaluation process, but serves as a celebration of the students’ progress and achievements thus far.

    How to Write a Settlement Demand Letter

    There are a lot of articles on-line about how to write a good demand letter. Maybe you have already read a few articles before landing here. However, most of these how to write a personal injury demand letter articles are not just fundamentally useless, but actively wrong. Useless advice is bad enough, but this nonsense can actually undermine your case.

    Before we get into how to write a settlement demand letter in a personal injury case, here are some sample for different types of accident and injury cases:

    Here are ten dos and don ts when writing a settlement demand letter in a personal injury case:

    1. DON T Write War and Peace.

    The size of your demand letter should correlate to the size of your claim. If the case is literally worth millions, then you want a demand package that fully lays out the nuances of the claim. If you are bringing a legitimate seven figure case, insurance companies are willing to spend the time, actually getting in the weeds of what the case is really about and the details of the victim’s losses.

    But, conversely, if you have $10,000 in medical bills and no permanent injury; insurance companies are rarely going to focus on details outside of the four corners of the medical record for a pre-suit settlement evaluation.

    What is actually harmful in writing a demand letter that is too long? Probably no harm, if you are representing yourself. But if you are an attorney, writing an inappropriately long demand letter that is very disproportionate to the size of the case sends an I m an inexperienced lawyer and I have no idea what I m doing alarm. The insurance company will sense that you are out of your depth and will never take the case to trial.

    The result? You will get a settlement offer that recognizes that there is no chance of a lawsuit ever being filed, and their courage to bluff you to see what you will do will increase. Why? Because the insurance company will expect you to take whatever settlement you can get.

    2. DO Highlight Unique Facts About Your Case.

    If there is something about your case that makes your claim more valuable, make it clear. This is another reason why writing a treatise is dangerous – you bury what really matters. If you missed your daughter s wedding because of the accident, or you were a marathon runner who can no longer run because of a herniated disc, this is something you need to effectively communicate to the insurance company.

    Someone once wrote that good writing does not need to bold, underline, italicize, or use any other emphasis to make your point. But a demand letter is not the great American novel you want to add the extra emphasis to the unique facts of a case. Because you have to work to get their attention. You settlement demand letter will be reviewed by an adjuster who more than likely will look at several demand letters over the course of a day while plowing through hundreds of pages of medical records. Using bold letters. underlining. italicizing. or using ALL CAPS, or any other emphasis may make your key points stand out when the adjuster would otherwise ignore them.

    The caveat to this is you cannot go over the top. Do not write a letter with 15 emphasized points. This is unbelievably counterproductive. We are talking about one or two key points that you may need to underscore.

    3. DON T Send the Demand by Certified Mail

    Listen, I get that many of you out there both victims and lawyers — are not looking to file a lawsuit. You just want to settle your case, for as much money as you can, without filing a lawsuit. I get it. But you have to look the part. Sending a demand letter by certified or registered mail is a loud signal that all you are looking to do is settle the case.

    In my office, I do not send out demands by certified mail and I do not harass adjusters to respond to our demands (unless my client has communicated a critical need for money immediately). For us, the demand letter is a we can settle this if you put real money on it, otherwise we are going to come out swinging event in the case. We love trying cases. But I cannot emphasize enough that if you are not of this mindset, you still have to fake it like you are.

    4. DO Differentiate Your Case

    The adjuster is going to read the medical records in your case. For all of their failings, insurance adjusters do a solid job of pulling out the critical facts in a demand letter. The most important part of the demand letter is explaining why your case is worth more than the adjuster thinks and worth more than cases with similar medical treatment, bills, etc.

    5. DON T Make a Specific Settlement Demand

    There is an exception to this rule – we will get to in a second. Unless you really know what you are doing, making a demand is a mistake. You are either going to make a settlement demand that is too high or too low. Either is a catastrophic mistake. You can mitigate your risk by letting the insurance company make the first move.

    6. DO Demand Policy Limits

    While settlement demands before an offer are generally a bad idea in most cases, demanding the policy limits makes sense if the value of the case is in the same ballpark as the policy limits. You should make the demand subject to a verification of assets and other contingencies you control so you are not actually locked into the demand.

    You have to find out what the policy limits are. Most states have laws that allow you to do this. Maryland requires insurance companies to provide this information if the Plaintiff jumps through a series of hoops.

    Avoid using incendiary language or making wild threats. Do not suggest the possibility punitive damages unless you are sure your jurisdiction allows them in your particular case. Insurance adjusters deal with over-the-top tough guys every day and they are immune to it. Be clear, be resolute, but check your hyperboles at the door. Lawyers who talk like this are the least likely actually to mean it and every insurance adjuster knows it.

    8. DO Make Clear the Case Will Not Settle Unless

    Our demand packages make clear that there are some factors sometimes external to the medical records — that must be considered and included in the settlement calculus or the case will not settle.

    9. DON T Set a Time Limit on a Response Unless You Mean It

    You cannot tell an adjuster you will file suit if you don t hear back from them by a certain date and then not file suit on that very date. If the insurance adjuster does not know the lawyer or if the victim is representing herself, they tend to discount your bluster. There is no getting around this. But giving them proof that you are all talk is going to be fatal to your effort to maximize the value of your claim.

    10. DO Include All of Your Damages

    The idea that there is a settlement formula based on the amount of medical bills is nonsense. Still, there is no question that the amount of the victim s hard economic damages has an anchoring effect of the value of the claim. If you have spent or lost just a penny from the result of the car accident or other tort, include it in your demand package with adequate documentation.
