Comparison of Visitors Medical Insurance Coverage from Companies in the U.S. vs India

You can purchase visitors medical insurance from companies based in your home country (such as India) or from companies in the U.S. Generally, the cost of medical insurance from an American company is higher, although it is still the preferred insurance to purchase. As demonstrated in the comparisons below, American insurance has many advantages.

The following table provides a detailed comparison of the various issues involving insurance products available from companies in the U.S. and India. Please keep in mind that this is a generic discussion. There may be exceptions to the offerings of products in both countries (and all the products from a given country do not work the same way). You should review all the details of any insurance plan you are considering before purchasing it (i.e. any brochures, policy wording, comparisons between plans and information from your representative).

Most of the information below regarding Indian companies was taken from the Web sites of various companies, as it existed as of writing this, and it may change in the future in case any of the companies revise their products. The information is also based on our personal experiences in dealing with these companies on a trial basis during previous visits to India, professional experience dealing with many customers on a daily basis, and from reading the discussion forums and experiences section on this Web site. The information is not targeted towards any specific company or product.

Buy travel insurance and get 2 for 1 cinema tickets

Every Tuesday and Wednesday for a whole year with MEERKAT MOVIES

Comparing pre-existing medical condition travel insurance

If you have a medical condition, you may have found that it pushes up the price of your travel insurance or that it’s difficult to find the cover you need.

The reason is that some health issues make it more likely that you might need medical assistance on holiday. While in the UK we’re lucky to benefit from free medical care, overseas we would usually be charged, and the price of even pretty standard procedures can run into thousands of pounds.

That’s why insurers may not cover you or charge higher premiums if they do, to help cover the cost of these expensive claims.

But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t shop around for cover. compare themarket .com can help you quickly compare prices across different providers, so that you can see if you could save money on your travel insurance with a medical condition.

What does travel insurance cover?

Holiday insurance not only covers you for cost of medical treatment abroad, it could also pay for you to get home in an emergency. Often you’re covered for a friend or relative staying with you during treatment, or flying out to support you if needed.

Travel policies also cover you if you lose your luggage or other possessions, or if they get stolen. Often you can get your money back if the trip has to be cancelled or cut short for some reason too.

Always declare your medical condition

When you compare and buy travel insurance, you’ll be asked about any health issues. It’s important that you do list any medical conditions and give insurers all the information they need because, if not, you might be charged more by your insurer or not be covered. If your insurer discovers that the medical emergency on your trip was linked to a condition you already had, they could refuse to pay your bills or add a cost.

So while it might be tempting not to mention things like high blood pressure or diabetes in your quote, you might be risking thousands of pounds. To get you a list of quotes, we’ll ask you a few questions about your health and get you to add in the names of any medical conditions. Not all of them will affect your premium.

Something to think about is whether you should buy an annual policy or single trip travel insurance. Often, if you take more than one holiday in a year, it is cheaper to buy annual travel insurance. But the best way to find out what would work best for you is to run a travel insurance comparison.

Where are you going?

When you compare travel insurance you first need to decide if your policy needs to cover you just for the UK, or for Europe, or the USA, Canada and Caribbean. If you’re going to the USA, Canada or Caribbean, or anywhere further beyond you’ll need additional cover. So if you will be going somewhere exotic, you should check that destination is covered.

By the way, your travel insurance won’t cover you if you are travelling to a country that the Foreign Commonwealth Office (FCO) doesn’t consider to be safe. If you’re not sure, check the FCO website.

Some people think that they don’t need travel insurance if they have a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). While travelling within many European countries, the EHIC means you can get treatment at the same rate as people who live in that country. However, it will be on the basis you get taken to a public not private hospital. In the event of an emergency you will be taken to the nearest hospital. Also some policies will waive your excess if you have one.

But the EHIC isn’t a substitute for travel cover. It wouldn’t pay for getting you home or other costs linked to your medical emergency. They are also date-specific, so check the expiry on your card before you travel. Be aware too, that not all European countries recognise the EHIC.

Of course there’s no EHIC outside the EU, so in other countries it might be more expensive again to get medical support.

What will you be doing?

If you’re going skiing or snowboarding, or taking a cruise, or your trip is for business, not all travel insurance with medical condition policies will cover you. With winter sports you have a greater risk of injury, while on a cruise you might need specific cover like confinement to your cabin, or an emergency airlift to hospital. If you’re travelling on business not every policy will cover you.

Compare and save!

Next you’ll get a page full of travel insurance quotes. These are listed in price order with the cheapest travel insurance at the top.

You can also see all the main details of each policy – how well it’s rated by Defaqto, the amounts of medical, baggage and cancellation cover and how much excess you would pay if you did make a claim. You can filter your results to only show those over a certain limit, if you like.

To find out more about what is and isn’t included in the policies, click each one for more details.

Once you have found a travel insurance quote that suits you, click the button to go through and buy. But do make sure you read all the details. We hope you never need to claim, but you should make sure you have the right cover, just in case.

Don’t forget, if you buy your travel insurance policy through us, you will benefit from the fabulous Meerkat Movies! You can get 2 for 1 cinema tickets on Tuesdays or Wednesdays, every week for a whole year*. A great reason to choose us for your holiday insurance.

Holiday Insurance for Pre-Existing

leading specialists.

Buying the right policy

Compare travel insurance for pre existing medical conditions

If you are one of the many who have a pre-existing medical condition then you will be aware of just how difficult it is to find the right travel insurance policy for you at the cheapest possible price.

Fortunately MoneySupermarket.com has teamed up with the top specialist travel insurance companies to offer you just that. Using our comparison tool you will now be able to compare travel insurance companies that cover medical conditions as part of their policies.

More about travel insurance with medical conditions included

Medical claims and emergencies abroad are one of the biggest costs to insurance companies. This is why some insurers will offer millions of pounds worth of cover to pay for things like hospital treatment, emergency repatriation and travel expenses associated with having to stay abroad longer due to a medical emergency.

This is why people who have a greater risk of claiming are forced to pay more for their insurance premiums. Whether you have experience of a serious condition such as cancer or something quite minor that occurred years ago, then you will need to disclose this to your insurer.

Even those who have been cured from a medical condition may still have to declare this to their insurer. For example, a person who has been completely cured of cancer may still face higher insurance premiums.

Travel insurance for people with existing medical conditions is designed so that if you were to fall ill whilst abroad due to your medical condition, then your health care costs will be covered which can run into the thousands. This will give you the peace of mind to know that everything will be taken care of should the worst happen.

Medical screening and risk factor

When searching for an insurance company that covers pre-existing medical conditions you will be often asked a number of in-depth questions and will be required to submit detailed and sometimes very personal answers. You will be asked about a range of conditions both physical and mental such as depression and anxiety.

Whilst this can be a frustrating process it is necessary so that the insurance company can tailor your policy to your specific needs and determine any risk you may impose.

Failure to declare a medical condition to an insurer could result in any claim being rejected and force you to cover any medical costs yourself. It may be tempting to withhold certain information in order to obtain a cheaper premium, but in the event of a claim the insurance company can access your medical records.

No matter how minor a medical condition may be it is always worth declaring this to the insurer just to be sure that you are fully covered.

Once you have answered all relevant questions there are a number of potential outcomes, these are:

  • Offer a standard travel insurance policy depending on the severity or type of condition
  • Exclude medical cover for certain pre-existing conditions
  • Offer the insurance to you but at a much higher price
  • Refuse to insure you at all
  • Impose certain restrictions, exclusions, special terms or higher excess payments

Depending on where in the world you are travelling could also have a large impact on your policy. For example, the United States, the Caribbean, Canada, Spain and Cyprus have some of the most expensive medical care in the world and this could determine whether you are offered travel insurance or not.

Our comparison tool will take you through a number of pre-determined questions to help you find the cheapest travel insurance quote that includes cover for pre-existing medical conditions.

Pharmaceutical Waste

Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products Events

4th National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) along with local law enforcement will be hosting another collection event. This event is an opportunity for the public to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs.

Date: Saturday April 28, 2012
Time: 10:00 am – 2:00 pm PST

Collection sites in your area will be listed on the U.S. DEA National Drug Take Back Initiative web page at http://www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov/drug_disposal/takeback/index.html in March 2012.

For more information on past DTSC sponsored symposia or PPCP related conferences, please refer to the Archived PPCP Events web page.

What are Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products (PPCPs)?

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) comprise a diverse group of chemicals including, but not limited to, prescription and over-the-counter human drugs, veterinary drugs, diagnostic agents, nutritional supplements, and other consumer products such as fragrances, cosmetics, and sun-screen agents. 1,2,3,4 The term PPCPs refers to the products we use for personal health or cosmetic reasons. 2 We swallow them, rub them on to our skin, have them injected or administer them to our pets. We get them with a prescription or purchase them over the counter.

Why is DTSC Interested in PPCPs?

PPCPs are an emerging issue. PPCPs can be introduced into the environment through many routes. 1,3,4 Treated and untreated domestic sewage containing excreted PPCPs and their metabolites following human use represents an important source of these compounds in the environment. Other sources which can potentially introduce PPCPs into the environment include: leaching from landfills following disposal of expired and unused products; disposal of expired and unused PPCPs in the toilet; release of unabsorbed externally applied PPCPs (e.g. lotions) to surface waters from activities such as swimming; excreta from animals including pets and other domestic animals; use of sewage solids and manure for soil amendment and fertilization; and industrial manufacturing waste streams.

How are These Chemicals Affecting the Environment?

The U.S. Geologic Services has reported that PPCPs such as steroids, prescription and nonprescription drugs, antibiotics, hormones, and fragrances have been detected in water samples collected from streams considered susceptible to contamination from various wastewater sources such as those downstream from intense urbanization or livestock. 5 Potential risk to aquatic organisms due to exposure to PPCPs in the environment has been identified as a primary concern given that aquatic organisms may be continually exposed to chemicals, including multi-generational exposures. 2,3 There is also concern for subtle effects on ecological receptors when exposed to low concentrations. For humans, consumption of potable water which may contain trace concentrations (in the part per trillion to part per billion) of various PPCPs has been identified as one of the primary potential routes of exposure. 5 To date, much research has focused on the potential for pathogen resistance to antibiotics and endocrine distribution by natural and synthetic sex steroids. 2,3 At this time, many unknowns remain regarding the potential for adverse effects on ecological receptors and humans from exposure to PPCPs in the environment. As new information becomes available, this will facilitate more detailed evaluations of the potential toxicological significance of the detection of PPCPs in the environment. More about the toxicological issues associated with PPCPs.

What are the Regulatory Issues Associated with Pharmaceutical Management?

For a long time, the regulatory distinction between hazardous waste (as defined in the law and by U.S. EPA and DTSC in regulation) and medical waste (with its own definitions) has hampered a truly environmentally-protective approach to the very complex issues surrounding pharmaceutical management. Only recently have environmental agencies begun to grapple with these issues. There are many levels of this very complex problem that, as a multi-media, multi-disciplinary scientific agency, DTSC intends to explore. More about the regulatory issues around pharmaceutical management.

How Can I Reduce or Prevent Releases of This Waste to the Environment?

Educate ourselves, family members, friends and coworkers about this emerging environmental issue. DTSC created this web page as an information portal on this topic and related subjects.

For most of us, we have been trained to get rid of old or unwanted drugs by flushing them down the toilet. This practice evolved from our desire to keep potentially dangerous drugs out of the hands of others, especially children. However, recent research is showing that this may be the least environmentally friendly method of disposing of old or unwanted drugs. The proper disposal practice may vary depending on county you live in or the wastewater agency that serves your region. Before disposing of old or unwanted drugs, consult your local wastewater agency or household hazardous waste center on the proper disposal practice for your area.

Other actions you might consider to reduce the amount of PPCPs entering the environment are to store your medications properly so they will be useful until their established shelf life. Pay attention to the storage instructions just as you do the dosage instructions.

For old or used pharmaceuticals, currently there is not a best pollution prevention alternative, elimination or substitution. Practice Greenhealth has a web page with information regarding pharmaceutical wastes from health care facilities.

Other DTSC Associated Activities

The Office of Pollution Prevention and Technology Development (OPPTD) is preparing the first SB14 Assessment Report on the pharmaceutical industries’ efforts to reduce hazardous waste. The pharmaceutical industry assessment report will profile each of the 27 California facilities captured by SB14 and listed under Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) 2833, 2834, 2835, and 2836. Each profile will contain individual facility site information, its major waste stream reduction accomplishments from 1999 to 2002 and their projections for further reducing these major waste streams from 2003 to 2006. More about the SB 14 pharmaceutical industry assessment.

2017 Average Healthcare Equipment Rental Rates: How Much Does It Cost

#

Healthcare Equipment Rental Prices

Leasing medical equipment is not just for startups that are short on cash. Medical equipment becomes outdated in just a few years. Because of this, leasing equipment rather than buying is a great way to maintain a state of the art facility.

With a medical equipment lease you pay only the amount the equipment is expected to depreciate while it’s in your hands. A typical lease lasts anywhere between one to five years. When the lease ends you can trade in the equipment for a new model.

Clinics, doctor’s offices, and hospitals all lease healthcare equipment. Such equipment includes the following:

  • Diagnostic equipment
  • Medical imaging equipment
  • Medical lab equipment
  • Medical office equipment
  • Surgery equipment
  • MRI machines
  • Computers
  • EMR Software
  • X-rays
  • Ultrasound machines
  • Surgery tables

The Cost of Leasing Healthcare Equipment

The cost of leasing medical equipment depends on the type of equipment you need, its cost, and your credit score.

A standard rate for leasing business equipment is $40 to $60 per month for every $1,000 purchased. At this rate a $10,000 machine will cost you $400 to $600 per month while a $50,000 machine will run $2,000 to $3,000 per month .

Many medical equipment financiers and financial websites offer online payment calculators to help you estimate the total cost of an equipment lease:

  • According to Tiger Leasing, a $100,000 piece of equipment can be leased for $9,177per month for a 12-month term, $3,327 per month for a 36-month term and $2,173 per month for a 60-month term.
  • Also according to Tiger Leasing, a $500,000 piece of equipment can be leased for $45,423 per month for 12 months, $16,480 per month for 36 months and $10,661 per month for 60 months.
  • Insight Financial Services has a formula on its website that can be used to determine whether leasing or buying is more economical. According to the site, a $1 million piece of equipment can be leased for 36 months for $27,950 per month. That figure assumes a 10% interest rate.

Healthcare Equipment Leasing Options

Medical equipment leases are available for equipment ranging in price from a few thousand dollars to several million. In addition to ensuring that you always have the most modern equipment, leasing instead helps conserve cash for other expenditures. Lease payments are also tax deductible.

Medical equipment leasing companies offer both new and used medical equipment. Most leasing terms are 12 to 60 months, but some companies will go up to 84 months.

Some companies offer 100% financing with no down payment required. Some even include soft costs like shipping, installation and training in the monthly lease payment. Others require a down payment, security deposits, and the first and last month’s lease payments upfront.

With some companies, flexible payment options are available. They include deferred payments, seasonal payment fluctuations or step up or step down payment plans. For a nominal fee, usually about $100 to $200, you can include an option to buy the equipment when your lease expires.

    Best Veterinary Software – 2017 Reviews, Pricing & Demos #medical #appointment

    #

    Veterinary Software

Our Reviewers Choice list shows the five highest user-rated software solutions for Veterinary when adjusted for total number of reviews and recency of reviews.

If a software solution has more reviews, and more recent reviews, we value those ratings more highly than a product with fewer, older reviews. This is because is it much harder to get 100 five-star reviews than it is to get 10.

We also know that software vendors continually tweak and update their product, so we believe that more recent reviews tend to be more accurate.

To determine which products made the final cut, we looked at how users rated each solution’s:

A solution can make the Reviewers’ Choice top five in all three categories, or just one or two. All software solutions in the Reviewers’ Choice have at least 10 reviews from real software users. The final products are listed in alphabetical order from left to right.

For more details on how we selected our Reviewers’ Choice, read the full methodology .

    Common Features of Veterinary Software

The features of veterinary software are quite similar to those of human-based medical practices, and share some of the same trends. The goal is to automate some manual processes that occur regularly and enhance veterinary capabilities to improve patient treatment and increase convenience for their owners.

    These features typically include:

Medical offices use electronic medical record (EMR) or electronic health record (EHR) software to keep track of patient details and store documents. A backbone of veterinary practices, the EMR includes past visit records, vaccination and lab documents, diagnoses and other details used for each visit.

Most systems offer some type of billing and invoicing capabilities to make transactions simpler. Other vendors may offer the ability to integrate other accounting or POS applications instead.

Veterinary software users can schedule appointments for existing patients or begin profiles for new visitors. Many systems offer an easy-to-use calendar view for scheduling to drag and drop appointments and add other information, such as staff assignments, rooms or other notes.

Patients are often busy, so sending a basic reminder or alert for an upcoming visit is an effective trend in appointment management. Schedule notifications based on a date or set up recurring automated messages.

Vet clinics need to maintain a supply of medications, vaccinations, food, treats and other office consumables and find the optimal stock quantities. This functionality can help offices create purchase orders, track batches and generate inventory reports.

Users can store important digital documents and images such as X-rays, scans or lab results, in a secure location for quick retrieval.

    Microchipping and boarding

Veterinary software can offer support features for microchipping, with connections to commonly used databases for lost pets. Additionally, users can manage boarding reservations and records.

What Type of Buyer Are You?

Of those looking for new software, most cite at least one of these reasons:

I m replacing old, outdated software that is no longer supported. This is a common complaint of software buyers from any industry, but it s particularly important for medical practices to maintain software updates for compliance and security reasons.

Technology is imperfect, so if the system ever crashes in the middle of a busy day, support will be needed to get back up and running.

I m progressing from manual methods to more automation. Even smaller vet practices can be buried in paperwork to manage, which reduces efficiency. By transitioning to veterinary software, you can reduce the clutter, make it easier to retrieve information and prevent errors or missing documents.

I m moving from several disparate systems to an integrated suite. When a pet owner comes in with their sick cat, you don t want to enter their medical history in multiple systems and hope all accounts are up-to-date.

Modern veterinary management software centralizes the most-used applications in one interface for quicker and more efficient workflows that keep sensitive medical data secure and accessible to the appropriate employees.

    Important Considerations

With any software purchase, there are many factors to consider aside from basic functionality and price. Deployment options and various add-on modules can turn a generic suite into a software package that meets all of your needs. Consider these when seeking software:

    • Cloud-based vs. on-premise. Nearly any type of software today will offer a cloud-based deployment option, where the system and any associated data is stored in computers on the vendor s side. This is becoming the popular choice for many software buyers for its security and ease-of-implementation benefits. Alternatively, vendors offer traditional on-premise deployments as well the choice can depend on whether your practice employs IT personnel, security of your location and more.
    • Mobility options. Another major trend in software technology is the move toward more mobile options. By offering mobile apps for the smartphones or tablets many consumers already have, or by supplying their own mobile devices, companies can significantly increase efficiency of daily tasks. Veterinarians and nurses, for example, can enter patient details directly into a tablet during an examination.

Recent Events You Should Know About

The veterinary and pet health industries are constantly changing in ways that impact the daily duties of doctors, nurses and office staff. Here are some recent events that are important to know:

New in 2017: Global Dental Guidelines. Standards for diagnosing and treating dental problems for pets has, historically, been limited. In 2017, the World Small Animal Veterinary Association expects to release the first Global Dental Guidelines. When available, these documents will add a new layer of expertise for vets, and can be stored within software for quick retrieval.

Vet practice culture is big factor in success. A new study, announced at the American Animal Hospital Association 2016 State of the Industry presentation, shows how important working relationships and company culture are to the success of a vet practice. Some key takeaways include:

    • Managers and administrators carry a positive perception of overall culture; Those without decision-making power and lower wages hold a less positive perception.
    • Practices with fewer employees and less gross income are associated with positive perceptions about leadership, teamwork and more.

Starting salaries are up, but job market still tough for vets. The starting salaries for new veterinary graduates has been on the decline for the past few years, and the number of new vet professionals finding positions straight out of college reached a high of 1,446 in 2015 up from the record low of 598 in 2012. While these signs show promise for the industry, it also represents a tightening of the job market.

Health Insurance Requirements for J-1/J-2 Visitors

Whether you are a J-1 student or J-1 scholar at UC Berkeley, health insurance coverage for yourself and all of your accompanying J-2 dependents is required throughout the period of your stay. The required coverage and health insurance plan enrollment depends on both your affiliation at UC Berkeley and U.S. federal requirements (e.g. U.S. Department of State and the Affordable Care Act).

Visiting Scholars and Visiting Student Researchers

Visiting Scholars and Visiting Student Researchers’ health insurance benefits are provided through Garnett-Powers Associates (GPA). See the UC Berkeley Visiting Scholar Benefits Program (UCB-VSBP) website for detailed plan and enrollment information.

    Postdoctoral Scholars:

    • Health insurance benefits provided through Garnett-Powers Associates
    • Contact: Robert Kilbourne at [email protected] or call 510-664-9355
    • Additional information available at the VSPA website

    Visiting Professors, Lecturers and Researchers

Please check with your department administrator regarding any benefits offered to you and your family through your UC Berkeley employment. If you have an insurance plan that meets all of the UC Berkeley and U.S. Department of State requirements but does not include medical evacuation and repatriation of remains, you must purchase supplemental insurance to make sure you also have this requirement covered. One option for supplemental insurance for medical evacuation and repatriation of remains is BETA through BETINS: International Health and Travel Insurance.

J-1 International Students (Enrolled UC Berkeley Students)

A J-1 student is defined as a degree-seeking student who is enrolled in a UC Berkeley Bachelor’s, Masters, or Doctoral degree program or a student enrolled full time through the UCEAP Program and who has one of the following categories listed in Section 4 of the DS-2019: STUDENT-NON-DEGREE, STUDENT BACHELORS, STUDENT MASTERS OR STUDENT DOCTORATE. Cell biology has an ever-growing cast of molecules that regulate how cells perform. In many cases, proteins bind to other proteins to change their trajectory and alter cellular function. These binding interactions are incredibly important to understand. In particular, researchers are trying to figure out why changes in the interactions of proteins can cause cancer.

Recently, Stephen D. Nimer, M.D. director of Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, was co-senior author on a paper, published in the journal PNAS. that describes how the protein DPF2 regulates blood production. DPF2 helps determine whether blood cells stay immature or mature into various cell types. High levels of DPF2 are seen in patients with acute myelogenous leukemia ( AML ), an aggressive type of blood cancer.

For years, a protein called vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) has been known for its ability to generate new blood vessels. As tumors grow, and need more oxygen and nutrients, they secrete VEGF to increase their blood supply. That was a radical discovery 20 years ago, and some believed it would create many therapeutic opportunities against cancer.

8 Epic EHR implementations with the biggest price tags in 2015

    #

8 Epic EHR implementations with the biggest price tags in 2015

Investments in EHR systems are undoubtedly costly, but some implementations appear to carry more costs than others.

Implementation costs vary system to system and hospital to hospital. Prices fluctuate based on what types of additional features and modules a hospital selects. And, according to a Politico report, some EHR vendors charge for additional service fees while others don’t. The Politico report indicates for Epic’s 2014 edition software, the Verona, Wis.-based EHR vendor charges a software licensing fee, implementation costs and annual maintenance costs while OpenVistA, developed by Carlsbad, Calif.-based Medsphere, for example, does not.

Even within the subsector of Epic implementations, costs fall across the board. For example, Duke University Health System, based in Durham, N.C. paid approximately $700 million for its Epic EHR (systemwide go-live in 2014) while Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H. paid $80 million (go-live in 2011), according to a Forbes report.

John Halamka, MD, CIO of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. said in the Politico report that hospitals selecting Epic’s platform are not just buying a product — they are buying a process. BIDMC does not operate on Epic’s EHR; rather, the hospital earlier this year forged a partnership with athenahealth, which included using the Watertown, Mass.-based vendor’s product.

“Epic is selling a methodology; often a lot of manual processes or heterogeneity and standardizing the work,” Dr. Halamka told Politico. “It’s not that they’re buying expensive software, they’re buying a lot of software.”

No matter where the prices come from, the cost of Epic installations are significant. Here are eight of the most costly Epic implementations reported within the past six months. These are working numbers, with some systems having allotted the indicated amounts to implementation projects and others that have already completed installations.

    Partners HealthCare: $1.2 billion
Boston-based Partners HealthCare is one of more recent implementations, going live the first week of June to the tune of $1.2 billion. This is the health system’s biggest investment to date. The implementation process took approximately three years, and in that time, the initial price tag of $600 million doubled.

    LehighValleyHealth Network: $200 million
LVHN started its switch to Epic’s platform in February 2015, but the full transition will take between four and six years. Harry Lukens, CIO of the Allentown, Pa.-based system, told The Morning Call the total investment dedicated to the installation includes software, hardware, data conversion and additional personnel.

    Mayo Clinic: “Hundreds of millions”
In January 2015, Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic announced it selected Epic’s EHR and revenue cycle management platforms and planned to drop its Cerner and GE Healthcare contracts to do so. The value of the contract was not disclosed by the health system or the vendor, but stock analysts told The Kansas City Star it is worth “hundreds of millions of dollars over several years.” Additionally, the headline of the Star report reads “Cerner loses Mayo Clinic contract worth hundreds of millions of dollars to Epic,” indicating a ballpark estimate of the new contract’s value.

    LaheyHospital Medical Center: $160 million
On March 28, 2015, the Burlington, Mass.-based hospital completed its two-year implementation of Epic’s EHR system. Two months later, Lahey Health said it was laying off 130 people at three hospitals to close the budget gap. In the six months ended March 31, the health system had lost $21 million, partly due to preparatory EHR implementation costs.

    Lifespan: $100 million
Providence, R.I.-based Lifespan announced plans to implement Epic’s EHR in March 2013, and the health system went live April 2015. Lifespan initially projected the implementation to cost $90 million, but in a Rhode Island Public Radio report, John Murphy, MD, executive vice president of physician services, alluded to a total closer to $100 million.

    Erlanger Health System: $97 million
Chattanooga, Tenn.-based Erlanger Health System signed a contract with Epic in May 2015 nearing $100 million. The health system will invest $91 million in capital expenses, but operating expenses will bring the total to $97 million over the next 10 years. Erlanger was deciding between Epic and Cerner’s platform and ultimately chose Epic because the bid was less expensive, CFO Britt Tabor told Times Free Press .

    WheatonFranciscan Healthcare: $54 million
In January 2015, Glendale, Wis.-based Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare announced plans to implement Epic across its hospitals. The system’s affiliated medical group and physician offices have been using Epic’s EHR since September 2012, but providers across the system can only view patient records and not input information. The implementation will create one central EHR platform across the system. Go-lives will begin January 2016. The system expects a return on investment after four years of using the platform.

Saint Francis Medical Center: $43 million
The hospital in Cape Girardeau, Mo. contracted with Epic in February 2015 and expects to go live in July 2016. Saint Francis plans to connect and exchange records with other hospitals in the St. Louis area also using Epic’s system, including SSM Health and Mercy Health.

    Worth noting
A handful of other hospitals and health systems reported signing contracts with Epic this year but did not disclose the costs of the IT projects. Some of these organizations include Arlington Heights, Ill.-based Northwest Community Healthcare, SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital-Audrain in Mexico, Mo. Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences in Tulsa, San Diego-based Scripps Health and St. Louis-based BJC HealthCare.

Editor’s note: An earlier version of this article identified Saint Francis Medical Center as being located in Dexter, Mo. We have updated the article to include the correct location, and we apologize for the error.

    How much do surgical nurses make #nurses, #rn, #lpn, #nurse #practitioners,

    #

    Nurses

Uh-oh. You woke up with a burning sore throat, and your mom says you need to go have it checked. But before the doctor even makes you say aaahhh, there’s probably someone else you’ll see first: the nurse.

Nurses are important people. Not only are they often the first health care professional that a sick or injured person sees, but they do their job in all kinds of settings from local hospitals to faraway military bases.

Some even work in the sky or at sea, helping to transport sick people on planes or caring for passengers on ships. In fact, anywhere in the world you can find someone who needs health care, you can probably find a nurse.

    Where Do Nurses Work?

Where are you most likely to meet a nurse?

At your doctor’s office. Nurses in medical offices typically assist the doctor by asking you about your symptoms, taking your temperature and blood pressure, checking your weight, giving shots, and collecting blood or urine samples for lab tests.

Doctor’s office nurses can teach patients about their medical problems and how to take care of themselves.

    You’ll also find nurses:

    • At your school: School nurses certainly see their share of kids with stomachaches, chickenpox, nosebleeds, and bumps and bruises. But they also have the important job of promoting good health. How do they do it? School nurses do vision, hearing, and scoliosis screenings and teach kids how to take care of themselves through good nutrition, exercise, and hygiene. They also help kids with special conditions, like diabetes, by teaching them about their condition and monitoring them.
    • At the hospital: Hospital nurses provide round-the-clock patient care. They monitor a patient’s vital signs like temperature and blood pressure, give medicine, draw blood, insert IVs, and work closely with doctors and families to keep everyone up to date on a patient’s condition. Some nurses even work in the operating rooms alongside the doctors.
    • In your neighborhood: Some nurses work directly in the community. These nurses teach people with special health problems like diabetes or asthma how to manage their conditions. They also might travel to a person’s home to provide care for those who are too elderly or sick to leave.

Whatever type of work they do, the best nurses have one thing in common: they love interacting with people. That’s because nurses do more than provide hands-on health care. They also give patients and their families compassionate support at a time when they need it most. Nurses are educated to care for the whole person, not just treat whatever health issue somebody has.

How Does Someone Become a Nurse?

It’s easy to think all nurses are pretty much the same, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. There are actually dozens of different types of nurses, each with its own level of training. Basically, the more formal education a nurse has, the more responsibilities he or she can take on.

People who want to become nurses have to decide which path is right for them. Some people know early on that they want to be a nurse. They might volunteer in hospitals when they are in high school and then go on to college to get a nursing degree. Others become nurses later in life, switching careers because they want to do something more rewarding and make a difference in people’s lives.

Whichever way people come to nursing, here are some of the paths they can take:

Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN): A licensed practical nurse provides basic care to patients under the supervision of a registered nurse. Things an LPN might do include helping a patient bathe and dress, administering certain types of medications, changing wound dressings, and taking vital signs. An LPN has at least 1 year of training in providing this kind of care.

Registered Nurse (RN): Registered nurses give medication, perform basic procedures, and work closely with doctors to monitor a patient’s condition. All RNs have a degree from a 2- to 4-year nursing program. They study subjects like chemistry, biology, anatomy, and psychology, and they also get lots of hands-on practice called “clinical training.” RNs are the most common type of nurse and most RNs have a bachelor’s degree.

Registered nurses need a nursing license. To get a license, a nurse must successfully complete a nursing program and pass a test called a licensing examination. To keep that license, a registered nurse must continue to take classes every few years to make sure his or her skills are up to date.

RNs also need additional training if they want to “specialize” that is, focus their care on one type of patient, such as newborn babies or the elderly. Registered nurses also can become certified in a certain area of expertise, such as emergency or intensive care.

Advanced Practice Nurses (APN): Advanced practice nurses are registered nurses who have gone on to get further training, including a master’s degree. There are many types of APNs, including a certified nurse midwife (who is trained to deliver babies), certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA, who specializes in giving and monitoring anesthesia), and a nurse practitioner (NP).

A nurse practitioner is a type of advanced practice nurse with training in a specific area, such as pediatrics. An NP often is the one who takes a medical history, does an initial physical exam, writes prescriptions, and treats illnesses and injuries. In fact, you may see an NP instead of a doctor at some of your office visits.

    Nursing Today

If you’ve ever seen an old movie with nurses in it, you’ve probably noticed that nurses used to look a lot different from how they look now. They wore white dresses, white shoes, and a crisp white hat. And they were all women.

A lot has certainly changed in the last 40 years. Today you’re more likely to find nurses wearing comfortable scrubs with clogs or sneakers, and you’re also more likely to find that many are men. In fact, the number of men in the profession has been steadily rising.

Still, with people living longer and needing more health care, there are simply not enough nurses to go around. Some experts estimate that by the year 2020, there will be a shortage of 1 million nurses and that translates to a lot of sick people who may not get the care they need.

Will you help fill that gap? Maybe so. Nursing takes a lot of hard work and dedication, but most nurses say there’s no other career they’d rather have.

As we find ourselves in an increasingly fast-paced and mobile world, our dependency on technology to provide real-time access to information increases as well. One of the most utilitarian advancements of technology towards this end has been the advent of thin client or ‘Cloud’ based computing systems.

In a nutshell: A thin client solution allows a computing device (PC, IPad, IPhone, Android device – aka the ‘client’) to ‘dial in’ to the desktop of another computer (aka the ‘server’). The user can then pass keystrokes and mouse clicks to the desktop of that computer, and receive screen shots of what the resulting screen looks like on the other computer (server) to their local computing device (client). It is called ‘thin’ client because you wind up passing very little data over the internet, just screen shots, mouse clicks and keyboard clicks.

The term ‘Cloud Computing’ appeared around 2006, and encapsulates the notion of thin client computing with the ability to securely store your data ‘somewhere else’. There are a variety of solutions available to your agency that provide thin client access to your local software, and provide automated methods to back up your local data to a secure, offsite location.

Remote Desktop (aka Terminal Services) is probably the best solution thin client solution for multiple remote users to access your local data for long periods of time. It is also the most expensive requiring the services of a local hardware technician, a Server operating system (Windows Server 2003, 2008, etc. which can cost $800 or more), and Remote Desktop licenses – which run about $80-$100 apiece (although you typically get one license for free). The advantages of using Remote Desktop to dial into a Server based operating system are that it is more secure, less prone to data corruption, and does not require a separate computer for each person logging in.

There are less expensive (even free) solutions for people that need to occasionally dial in to the home office, or dial in one at a time. These solutions all require that there is a separate computer at the home office, for each person dialing in. Some of these solutions can be found at: Logmein.com. GotoMyPC.com. Join.me. and TeamViewer.com. Each product has advantages and disadvantages regarding ease of use, reliability, supported client devices, and features; and there are several factors such as how printing and file transfers are handled between the ‘Free’ and ‘Pro’ versions of each software that must be taken into account. If you are considering one of these less expensive thin client solutions, it might be money well spent to hire a tech for an hour or so to help you sort out your options.

Another aspect to Cloud Based computing is the ability to securely backup your data by copying your files over the internet to a secure facility offsite, thus limiting your liability if your local location burns down, or is involved in a natural disaster. Some companies that offer offsite backup solutions for a small fee are Mozy.com. and Dropbox.com. With a little help from a local tech – you can quickly set one of these programs up, and then have peace of mind that your data is stored securely ‘somewhere else’. Just make sure that your tech sets the program up to send the files over the internet at night, otherwise you will see your daytime internet speeds drop dramatically.

Of course Agency Software, Inc. offers turnkey hosting solutions as well. If you’d rather not worry about configuring your Remote Desktop solution, or making sure your data is securily backed up, we recommend the services of EME Cloud For about $30 per user / per month, DJ and his staff will web-enable your Agency Software applications for use on nearly any device, from nearly anywhere in the world. If you have questions, please fee free to give us a call at (800)342-7327 to discuss your Cloud Computing needs.

    Drug and Alcohol Detox Information

Most mind-altering drugs, including alcohol, cause severe, uncomfortable and even life-threatening withdrawal symptoms when an addict suddenly stops using them. Addicts who are ready to begin the recovery process from drug and alcohol addiction usually must undergo detox, or medical detoxification. as the first step on the road to healing from substance abuse issues.

Why Detoxify from Drugs and Alcohol?

Physical dependence results from long-term abuse of alcohol and drugs such as opioid pain relievers, heroin. and cocaine. When a patient who suffers from physical dependence is unable to obtain the substances to which he or she has become addicted, neurotransmitters and receivers in the brain are affected as they are accustomed to functioning in a particular, disturbed way due to the presence of ever-increasing quantities of mind-altering substances. Therefore, unpleasant and dangerous withdrawal symptoms result when the brain sends messages demanding additional drugs or alcohol and the substances are not available.

These symptoms range from simple stomach or respiratory discomfort to increase in heart rate, breathing disturbances, and even dangerous seizures. Therefore, an addict who attempts to stop using addictive substances in an attempt to quit “cold turkey” will often fail or even endanger his or her health unless detoxification procedures are initiated to stop withdrawal symptoms.

Traditional medical detox does not actually “detoxify” the body by getting rid of stored poisons. Its aim is to stop the toxic effects of withdrawal by substituting less dangerous and less addictive medications for alcohol and abused drugs. The medications used for detoxification affect the same parts of the brain that abused substances do, so they answer the brain’s call for additional doses of alcohol or abused drugs without causing the same damage or perpetuating the cycle of tolerance and dependency to the abused substances.

Detoxifying from alcohol and drugs is crucial to recovery from alcoholism and drug addiction. Even when a patient is addicted to both alcohol and drugs, or if addiction to more than one drug is an issue, detox treatments will help overcome withdrawal symptoms so that a recovering addict can begin intensive counseling and rehabilitation in comfort and health.

If you or a loved one is ready to quit abusing alcohol or drugs, but needs help overcoming or avoiding withdrawal symptoms, please call our national drug recovery information helpline at 1-888-935-1318 . We are on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to help you find the right program for successful detox and addiction treatment.

    Detoxification Options and Programs

Most detox procedures are offered in an inpatient setting. Residential rehabilitation treatment programs begin with medically supervised detoxification, and administering the detox treatments in the pleasant setting of a rehabilitation center helps patients to relax and become accustomed to a drug-free life. Detoxification can also be carried out in a hospital, although this is usually done only in cases of very severe addiction or when other physical or emotional health issues are present that require hospitalization. Outpatient procedures to detoxify recovering addicts are available, but outpatient treatment is usually only recommended in cases of mild addiction or when a patient cannot interrupt his or her schedule to spend time in a residential treatment center. Such outpatient procedures involve administering the detox medications in a clinic or office where the patient can be monitored in the event emergency procedures are necessary. Monitoring is also necessary to ensure that patients comply with their detoxification regimens and do not return to use of addictive substances.

Some clinics and treatment centers claim to offer natural methods of detoxification. If these methods are meant to detoxify the body in the sense of ridding it of harmful substances, and help it repair itself through diet and use of recognized alternative treatments, then such natural procedures can be helpful. In fact, vitamins are a part of some traditional detoxification procedures, especially when alcohol abuse, which leads to malnutrition, is involved. Traditional medical detox is the only method of treatment that has been proven effective when it comes to actually preventing the discomfort and possible danger of withdrawal symptoms .

    Treatment Center Features

In 2016, Recovery Brands asked patients leaving a rehabilitation center which characteristics they had come to view as valuable to examine when looking at a program. The highest-rated priority was the program’s financial options, for example insurance accepted and payment options. They also appreciated the facility’s offerings (facility housing, extra activities, room quality, etc.) much more after finishing treatment. Individuals considering programs will want to look at a facility’s payment policies as well as clinic offerings to help with their final facility choice.

Nevertheless, proper nutrition, exercise, and alternative health preservation techniques such as meditation are very beneficial to helping recovering addicts overcome their struggle with addiction. Once the initial detox procedure is completed, behavioral therapy and intensive counseling are necessary to help patients progress even further toward full recovery.

Full recovery from alcohol and drug abuse occurs when former addicts no longer feel any need to turn to mind-altering substances for recreation, or to deal with personal issues from which they want to escape. Recovery is best started with detox that prevents the detrimental effects of abrupt withdrawal from addictive substances, but medical detoxification is only the first step toward breaking the grip of alcohol and drug addiction .

Please call our nationwide drug and alcohol recovery information helpline at 1-888-935-1318 to find out more about comprehensive addiction treatment programs that include medical detox as well as full medical, psychological, and social support.

    Veterinarian Malpractice – Is it Worth Suing? #medical #malpractice #lawyers #in

Veterinarian Malpractice – Is it Worth Suing?

Your pet is a member of your family; a trusted companion and reliable friend. When it doesn’t feel well. you do everything you can to get it the best medical treatment. When your pet doesn’t get well or dies, your first impulse may be to file a lawsuit for veterinarian malpractice, but is it worth suing? Probably not.

Is a Malpractice Suit the Answer?

Because animals are considered property. if your pet is injured or killed, you must file a lawsuit to recover damages. This is true even if it’s your veterinarian who caused the harm.

    Measure the Costs

Veterinarian malpractice lawsuits aren’t common, though, because the measure of damages for the loss of a pet in most states is the market value of the pet. In other words, what someone else would pay for an identical pet of the same age, breed and condition.

The truth is your lawyer’s fees may be more than you’re able to recover in court. Also, as a general rule, pet owners like you have to prove the same things you would have proven in a medical malpractice case. which isn’t always easy or inexpensive.

A few states allow money damages for emotional distress and loss of companionship. However, awards for an owner’s mental suffering are the exception rather than the rule.

    Small Claims Saves Costs

An alternative is to file your lawsuit in small claims court where you won’t have the cost of a lawyer or some other costs of a full-blown trial. But even then, a lawsuit isn’t likely make up for the loss of a treasured animal companion.

    Report the Incident

No matter which legal path you follow, it’s important that you report the suspected malpractice to prevent others from suffering a loss like yours and to hold the veterinarian accountable. File complaints with the:

The Board in your state will investigate the matter and has the power to suspend or revoke the veterinarian’s license if it finds your pet wasn’t treated properly.

Prevention Insurance May Be the Best Medicine

Keeping your pet healthy in the first place, and having a plan to cover medical costs, may be the keys to a long, happy relationship.

    Holistic Treatment

Although it often takes on different meanings, holistic treatment means caring for the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual needs of your pet.

What’s that mean? Any number of things, including:

    • Changing the pet’s diet to include more natural or organic foods to promote health, manage weight, etc.
    • Increasing the time your pet spends socializing with you and your family and making it quality time – more playing, touching and petting, and longer walks, for example
    • Participating more in the treatments selected by your veterinarian for your pet. Ask questions about the pros and cons of any treatment and any alternatives

This type of approach to your pet’s health may help prevent illness and speed the healing process in case of illness. It will also make for a happier pet, which means more enjoyment for you and your family.

    Pet Insurance

Yes, in many states, you can buy insurance for your pet. Like health insurance for you and your family, there are many types of plans that range in costs and coverage, but generally you can get a policy that covers all or part of the costs of vet visits, lab tests, surgery and medication. Your vet can provide diagnostic and treatment options rivaling human health care, and insurance may be the only way you can afford it.

    Life Insurance

Also, you may be able to by life insurance. Unlike your life insurance policy, there’s no cash payout when your pet dies. Rather, pet life insurance pays “end-of-life” benefits to help you the pay the costs of cremation or burial. Also, many policies pay for bereavement counseling to help you cope with the loss of your pet.

The loss of a pet can be just as devastating as the loss of any other family member. When veterinarian malpractice is involved, your grief and anger may take control. Think carefully about filing a lawsuit, and talk to an attorney about it.

Perhaps the the best course is to try to prevent illness, and if you can afford it, buy insurance to help you pay for medical care. That way you and your pet can enjoy each other’s company for many, many years.

    Questions for Your Attorney

    • How long do I have to file a malpractice suit against my pet’s veterinarian?
    • Can a veterinarian lose her license if she’s sued for malpractice?
    • Does my veterinarian have to get my consent before giving my pet any medical treatment?

    Electronic Medical Records

“The new self check-in kiosk at Lakeside has been a very positive addition to clinic operations. We have received excellent feedback from both patients and staff. Patients are happy because it is a simple interface that rapidly, accurately and privately accomplishes the check-in routine. The staff are happy as it has unloaded a large portion of one of their most time consuming tasks, allowing them the ability to devote more time to the complex tasks that are not so easily automated. We have been pleasantly surprised by everyone’s acceptance of this added functionality”

    – Dr. Bill Haver, Managing Partner, Lakeside Medical Clinic

“While there are still people who appreciate registering in person with a receptionist, a high volume of patients are very enthusiastic about the convenience and ease of using the kiosk. The touch screen terminal is so user-friendly, patients of all ages seem very comfortable with it”

    – Warner Kabatoff, General Manager, Lakeside Medical Clinic

“Moving from one software to another is a big deal. However once we saw the power of Accuro, the vote was unanimous. Each Physician could see that the future benefits of this system were going to be huge!”

    – Tom Malone, Chief Executive Officer, Winnipeg Clinic

“I knew that implementing Accuro EMR across the community would not only facilitate efficiency of workflow, but would allow physicians to make informed decisions based on the bigger picture. With a tailored system, enabling physicians to take control of the system, we now have total care over each and every one of our patients”

    – Dr. Harold Nyhof, Vice President, Medical Services, North Eastman Health Association (NEHA)

“As one of the physicians in the largest and busiest clinic in Nova Scotia, with over 15 years of experience on an EMR, I was naturally very cautious about switching to another EMR platform. I was very impressed with our transition to QHR’s Accuro EMR and very relieved that what QHR promised, they delivered. QHR was able to completely import my 15 years of electronic data in a very structured format. I have been very pleased with the transition and the interfaces with the lab and diagnostic imaging which were created. I WOULD NOT HESITATE TO RECOMMEND ACCURO.”

    – Dr. Robert Oliver, Woodlawn Medical Clinic, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia

    No Exam Life Insurance #life #insurance #with #no #medical #exam,no #exam

    #

Life Insurance With No Medical Exam

Normally, if you’re applying for life insurance you are required to submit to a medical examination with regards to issues that may affect your insurance rates. For instance, you may be liable to pay more for life insurance if, during the medical exam, a doctor finds that you have a condition that indicates that you should be in a higher risk category.

Heart problems, high cholesterol or a history of strokes are some examples of issues that might put you in a higher risk category. For many individuals seeking relief from constant worries about their health, no exam life insurance is the perfect choice.

Who else might benefit from a no exam life insurance plan?

    • Those who need immediate coverage
    • Individuals suffering from health conditions, such as cancer
    • Senior citizens

    Pre-existing Conditions

Many life insurance companies charge exorbitant fees if you have what they call a pre-existing condition which puts you in a higher risk bracket. Life insurance companies want to make more money off of you than you give them in the long term, so if they expect your death to be a drain on their company’s finances in the near future, they want you to have paid in as much as possible. Life insurance with no medical exams provides the perfect solution for individuals who would have to pay a huge amount of money for a traditional term or permanent life insurance plan. It may even be possible to get whole life insurance without a medical exam .

Of course, you have to compare the monthly rates of each. Generally no exam life insurance is more expensive than the average life insurance plan and it offers the same services. However, it’s more of a one-size-fits-all insurance plan, making it a great choice for people who do have “pre-existing conditions” like a heart condition or who are significantly older. If this describes you, a traditional life insurance plan may ask for higher rates than a no exam insurance plan

Enhanced Privacy With No Medical Exam Life Insurance

Another benefit of purchasing life insurance with no medical exam is that you can keep your medical information private. Many of us feel a little bit leery that our private information is being viewed by some insurance executive or technician in a suit with nothing but dollars on the brain.

We’d like to know that information about our bodies is kept between ourselves and trusted physicians and doctors. Additionally, no exam life insurance is great for people who don’t enjoy doctors’ offices, needles or exams. They’re simpler, they are processed much more quickly, and they leave your family with more money to help with funeral expenses.

    How to Identify Circumcision Damage
    in the Adult Male

NOTE: Links with a right-facing blue arrow will take you off this site.

The risks of newborn circumcision are
an underreported and ignored factor in this argument.
Most often a poor surgical result isn’t recognized until years after the event.
The adverse long term consequences of infant circumcision
on the sexual health of American men must be recognized
    by physicians, parents, and legislators.
James L. Snyder, M.D. Past President, Virginia Urologic Society
The Problem of Circumcision in America

Many circumcised men are unaware that they have been harmed by circumcision because they do not understand how the intact (non-circumcised) penis functions and/or they do not know how to identify their circumcision damage. Many circumcised men fail to recognize their own circumcision damage and assume that peculiar things about their penis are ‘normal’ or ‘a birth defect.’

NOHARMM documents evidence of how males have been harmed by circumcision. After reading this page, we encourage you to complete a confidential Harm Documentation Form and submit it to NOHARMM. Some individuals may be able to take legal action against their circumciser, especially those who initiate action within one year after first realizing their damage or, in the case of minors, within one year of turning age 18. We can refer you to an appropriate attorney .

This page illustrates some of the physical consequences of infant circumcision, as they appear in the adult male:

For a discussion of circumcision’s sexual and psychological consequences affecting men,
please read Long-Term Consequences of Neonatal Circumcision .

Below: This photograph shows the lack of skin mobility during erection of a circumcised penis. Note the dark scar where the foreskin was amputated.

This tightness and the unnatural dryness of the penile shaft and head causes some men (and their partners) pain, abrasion, and bleeding during sex. Breaks in the skin are an effective way to transmit and contract sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV.

Below: These five photographs show how the shaft skin of
an intact (non-circumcised) penis moves during sexual activity.

Range of skin movement marked by point A is several inches back and forth.
Note how point B moves and the end of the foreskin widens to accommodate
the head of the penis. Notice the smooth texture of the head of the penis.
The moist mucosal surface of the foreskin and glans is similar to that
of the female labia and vagina.
NOTE:Retraction is normally not possible or desirable in infants and young children.

Explore the severity of your circumcision or the amount of foreskin you have using the Coverage Index

The glans (penile head) is normally an internal organ protected by the moist mucosal tissue of the prepuce (foreskin). Without the foreskin, the glans is exposed to the outer environment (air, soap, clothing, sun, etc.). The glans dries out and develops several extra layers of skin (keratinization). 1 Compare the dry, cracked appearance of the glans of a circumcised penis (upper right) with the moist mucosal end of the glans of an intact penis (lower right). The unnatural dryness of the circumcised penis can cause abrasion and bleeding during sex, whereas the moistness of the intact penis makes sex more comfortable, especially during penetration. For women with circumcised male partners, the problem of ‘vaginal dryness’ during sex may also be partly attributable to the unnatural dryness of the circumcised penis.

Besides removing the densely nerve-laden foreskin, circumcision removes 50% of the penile shaft skin and associated nerve endings. 2 The exposed glans then keratinizes, causing further loss of sensation. Many circumcised men in the Awakenings survey 3 reported that desensitization caused them to abandon or bypass the subtler pleasures of genital foreplay in favor of immediate intercourse, which would offer them greater stimulation. They often hurried through intercourse, however often needing extraordinary and sometimes violent thrusting to obtain sufficient stimulation for both pleasure and orgasm. Other men reported frequent reliance on behaviors offering more stimulation than vaginal sex (e.g. oral sex, anal sex or masturbation) or compensating for diminished quality of sexual response with quantity (sexual compulsivity).

Eventually, keratinization occurs even after adult circumcision. It can also occur in intact men with short foreskins or those who habitually wear their foreskin in the retracted position.

Imagine how different female sexual response would be if the clitoral hood (female foreskin) and the labia were removed. Exposure of the clitoris to the constant effects of the outer environment would approximate the effects of male circumcision.

    Plastic Surgery Malpractice Lawyers

Serious Injuries from Cosmetic Surgery Malpractice

Plastic surgery, also known as cosmetic surgery, is a complex medical procedure that can carry substantial risk of complications if the surgeon is not properly trained or fails to follow the appropriate standards of medical care. Medical mistakes during plastic surgery can result in disfigurement, permanent physical injury or even death.

The lawyers at Saiontz Kirk, P.A. investigate potential plastic surgery malpractice lawsuits nationwide for individuals who have suffered a serious and debilitating injury as a result of a preventable medical mistake. There are no fees or expenses unless a recovery is obtained. To review the circumstances surrounding treatment and determine if financial compensation may be available, request a free consultation .

    PLASTIC SURGERY MALPRACTICE LAWSUITS

In many cases, plastic surgery is an elective procedure that is not medically necessary. As a result, many plastic surgeons offer their services through advertisements directed to the consumer or at clinics in malls or other high traffic areas.

While most plastic surgeons are qualified doctors, the commercial nature of the practice has led to many physicians performing surgery without the proper training and credentials.

When a doctor fails to exercise the proper standard of medical care, devastating consequences can result. During any surgery, a doctor will encounter situations where quick decisions must be made. Without the proper training and experience, mistakes can occur.

The attorneys at Saiontz Kirk, P.A. have the experience and resources necessary to protect your family and investigate potential lawsuits for plastic surgery malpractice. Request a free legal consultation and claim evaluation, to determine if you, a friend or family member may be eligible for claim.

Plastic surgery malpractice lawsuits are investigated throughout the United States and there are no fees or expenses unless a recovery is obtained.

The New York Medical Malpractice Law Blog #medical #malpractice #lawyers #ny

    #

New York State is far from the worst when it comes to how victims of medical malpractice are treated in court. For example, we do not have set limits on the amount of money damages that can be awarded to a plaintiff for so-called non-economic damages, that is, the damages that can be awarded to compensate for the victim s pain and suffering. Other states do, in the form of caps, often placed at $250,000.

But medical malpractice victims can be hurt, a second time, by unrealistic limitations in the time they have to bring an action in court. Barring exceptional circumstances, malpractice victims who miss such a deadline, called a statute of limitations, are forever barred from having their complaint heard in court. In New York, a victim of medical malpractice has 2 and 1/2 years from the date of the malpractice to start a lawsuit. That may sound like a sufficient amount of time to realize that a medical error was made, and to hire a lawyer to do something about it.

But what if, through no fault of your own, you don t discover the malpractice until more than 2 and 1/2 years have passed? Right now, you, and every other New Yorker, are powerless to seek compensation. But there is a groundswell of support for a law that may change that unfortunate situation. It is called Lavern s Law, after a New Yorker who fell victim to the unfairness of the current statutes of limitations. This story in the NY Daily News provides some background. Lavern Wilkinson had a curable case of lung cancer, but her doctors failed to diagnose it on time. By the time they, and Lavern, realized their mistake, it was more than 2 and 1/2 years from the time of the misdiagnosis, and neither she, nor the family she left behind, had any recourse in our court system.

As this article in The Journal News points out, New York is one of only 6 states in the U.S. that fails to use a date of discovery rule for medical malpractice victims, i.e. a rule that allows a malpractice victim to bring suit within a set time from the date of discovery of the malpractice and not just the time of the malpractice.

As my colleague, Eric Turkewitz, stresses in his post on the topic, it s time to pass Lavern s Law, before this nonsensical void in our law works to deprive someone else of his or her right to hold a negligent doctor accountable. Eric s post provides helpful information on how you can help advocate for getting Larvern s Law to a vote on the Senate floor, and I hope you will do so. New York s victims of medical malpractice deserve better.

It is by now old news that President Trump s top lawman, Jeff Sessions, ordered most of the country s U.S. Attorneys to clear out, immediately or sooner, a couple of days ago. This normally calls for the submitting of resignations. The U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Preet Bharara, did not go peacefully however, and forced Sessions to fire him instead, for reasons that will likely come into focus in the coming weeks. One reason for the highly charged departure, though, is quite public. President Trump had met with Mr. Bharara, and had personally requested that he stay on to work during the Trump Administration s tenure. Therefore, the change of position apparently took the U.S. Attorney by unpleasant surprise.

Not everyone in Mr. Bharara s position was treated that way. In fact, the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of New York was told that he could stay on. in order to accumulate enough time for his pension to become effective, and to ensure an orderly transition. That was a generous and reasonable thing to do: generous concerning Mr. Hartunian s pension; and reasonable because leaders of federal prosectors offices need time to effectuate an orderly transition, and insure that investigations in progress continue to move forward under proper guidance.

The manner in which Mr. Sessions carried out his removal of most sitting U.S. Attorneys was abrupt, making the possibility of achieving orderly transitions at each office slim. From here, I can t imagine why he chose to do it this way. But the end result is that lots of dedicated public servants who worked hard for modest paychecks are leaving their offices in a hurry, and feeling slighted. They deserve better. They deserved to be treated like the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of New York.

Statutes of limitations are unfair and arbitrary. For the non-lawyers, statutes of limitations are time limits on your opportunity to bring a lawsuit. Some of them appear reasonable. For example, here in New York State, you have three years to bring a suit against a person or entity whose negligence, or carelessness, caused you to suffer an injury. In the case of medical malpractice, where a healthcare provider, such as a doctor, makes an error while treating you, and the error results in injury or death, you have two and one-half years to sue.

But if that carelessness, or that medical error, took place in a city or state-run facility think NYCHHC facilities, such as Bellevue Hospital you have ninety (90) days to file a notice of claim against the appropriate city or state organization behind the healthcare facility, or you are forever barred from bringing a lawsuit, no matter how egregious the misconduct, and no matter how devastating the injuries, barring certain rare exceptions.

Let me put that into context for you. I have a client who suffered severe injuries at his birth because a hospital run by New York State failed to take steps to address a neonatal blood disorder of which they were aware. Because the parents were quite sophisticated and smart, they realized the need to reach out to a lawyer quickly, and with my office s help, filed their notice of claim against New York State within ninety days, preserving their right to bring an action on behalf of their son, who will need care for the rest of his life. Between New York s Medical Indemnity Fund (MIF) and the state, the money for that family s needs will be there, thanks to the settlement being negotiated on the family s behalf.

But then there is the case of the young lady I spoke with last week, who lost her baby a few weeks shy of his expected birth date due to atrociously poor neonatal care from a NYC hospital. A single mother with other children to care for, and with a background that included little education, she did not reach out for help until well after the ninety days had expired, and I couldn t help her. She had been trying to get back on her feet after losing a child, and simply had not gotten around to thinking more carefully about the suspicious-sounding explanations she had been given in response to her questions on how she lost her baby. The case, if there was a case, would have had a very limited value in terms of damages, for reasons not relevant to this discussion. But the time limitation here was not helpful to any party, and kept a potentially deserving one from accessing our courts.

And perhaps you ve noticed that hospitals run by NYC or New York State do not alert you to the the ultra-short times facing you if you are unfortunate enough to be the victim of medical malpractice. Well, now you know. Tell your friends. Contact my office if you have any questions.

    Eye on Ethics

Reflective Practice in Social Work — The Ethical Dimension
    By Frederic G. Reamer, PhD
    April 2013

Recently, I received an urgent voicemail message from a hospital social worker: “Please get back to me as soon as possible. I have a meeting tomorrow morning with our head of human resources, and I’m very nervous about it.”

Later in the day, I connected with the social worker and learned the following: He had been employed by the hospital for seven years and had never been disciplined. His current predicament began when his immediate supervisor called him in to discuss concerns about possible boundary violations and an alleged inappropriate dual relationship with a hospital patient. The social worker explained to me that in his personal life he is actively involved in a community-based group of parents who adopted children from China. The group sponsors a wide range of activities to support and enhance the children’s ethnic identity. Through this involvement, the social worker said, he and his wife had become very friendly with several other adoptive parents.

About three weeks earlier, one of the parents who had become a good friend was admitted to the social worker’s hospital for treatment of a chronic, debilitating infection. The friend did not receive social work services. During the friend’s hospital stay, the social worker occasionally stopped by his room to say hello and inquire about the friend’s health. The patient’s attending physician had collaborated professionally with the social worker in other hospital cases and was well aware of the patient’s friendship with the social worker.

One afternoon during the patient’s hospital stay, the physician contacted the social worker and explained that the patient was distraught after having just learned that he was diagnosed with bone cancer. According to the social worker, the physician asked the social worker to visit the patient and offer emotional support. The social worker visited the patient in his room and spent about an hour helping his friend process the distressing medical news.

The social worker documented this patient encounter in the hospital chart. During a random quality-control review of social workers’ chart entries, the hospital’s social work supervisor read the note and became concerned because the social worker had not been assigned to provide social work services to this patient. The supervisor learned of the social worker and patient’s friendship and notified the director of human resources, who documented this “incident” in the social worker’s personnel record and asked to meet with the social worker.

    The Nature of Reflective Practice
In 1983, the late scholar Donald Schon published his influential and groundbreaking book The Reflective Practitioner: How Professionals Think in Action . Schon’s thesis, based on his extensive empirical research, was that the most skilled and effective professionals have the ability to pay critical attention to the way they conduct their work at the same time that they do their work. Schon coined the terms “knowing-in-action” and “reflection-in-action,” which suggest that some professionals can take a step back and think hard about what they are doing while they are doing it. The concepts are akin to the widely used social work concept “use of self.”

Ordinarily the concepts of knowing-in-action and reflection-in-action are applied to practitioners’ cultivation and use of technical skill, whether in surgery, architecture, town planning, engineering, dentistry, or psychotherapy. In my view, and as the above case demonstrates, social workers would do well to extend the application of these compelling concepts to their identification and management of ethical issues in the profession. Ideally, effective practitioners would have the ability to recognize and address ethical issues and challenges as they arise in the immediate context of their work, not later when someone else points them out. Put another way, social workers would have a refined “ethics radar” that increases their ability to detect and respond to ethical issues.

Of course, the most important benefit is client protection. However, an important by-product is self-protection, that is, the increased likelihood that social workers will protect themselves from ethics-related complaints.

    Implementing Reflective Ethics Practice
Certainly the hospital social worker who called me with panic in his voice would have benefited from reflective ethics practice and highly sensitive ethics radar. Had he reflected on the ethical dimensions of the boundary challenges that emerged when he interacted with his friend and hospital patient, it is likely that this well-meaning practitioner would have avoided his unpleasant encounter with the human resources department. The social worker’s decision to visit his friend was not the error; that was a humane and compassionate gesture. The error, rather, was not reflecting on his role in that moment and managing the boundaries carefully, including discussing them with his friend and his supervisor.

In my experience, ethics-related reflection-in-action entails three key elements.

Knowledge: Skillful management of many ethical dilemmas requires knowledge of core concepts and prevailing standards. Ethics concepts are addressed in professional literature and standards exist in several forms, including relevant codes of ethics, agency policies, statutes, and regulations. For example, the National Association of Social Workers’ Codeof Ethics includes explicit standards pertaining to boundaries, dual relationships, and conflicts of interest (especially section 1.06). It would have been best for the hospital-based social worker to consult relevant literature and standards with regard to conflicts that can arise when a social worker encounters a friend or social acquaintance in the work setting. The hospital’s personnel policies also prohibit dual relationships that involve conflicts of interest.

In some cases, although not all, statutes and regulations address ethical issues. In the United States, both federal and state laws address various ethical issues, such as confidentiality, privileged communication, informed consent, and social workers’ ethical conduct. Such laws would not have been particularly helpful in the hospital social worker’s case, but often they are helpful and critically important, for example, when social workers must decide whether to disclose confidential information without clients’ consent to protect a third party from harm or whether parental consent is necessary to provide services to minors who seek help with substance abuse but insist that this information be withheld from their parents.

Transparency: Reflective social workers who sense an ethical issue share their concern with supervisors, colleagues, and appropriate administrators. An effective way to protect clients and practitioners alike is to avoid any suggestion that the ethical issue is being handled “in the dark.” Such clarity demonstrates social workers’ good faith efforts to manage ethical dilemmas responsibly. When appropriate, clients should be included in the conversation.

Process: Although some ethical decisions are clear-cut, many are not. The hospital social worker who contacted me was unsure about the best way to manage his involvement with a good friend who had become a patient. Unfortunately, the social worker did not notify his supervisor about the dilemma or seek consultation. He documented his lengthy hospital-room encounter with the patient, but doing so in the client’s hospital chart created the impression that the social worker was functioning in his professional capacity, not as a friend. My hunch is that had the social worker notified his supervisor of his friendship with the patient and made clear that any contact with the patient occurred as a friend, the social worker may have avoided any adverse personnel issues. What I have learned is that many ethical decisions are not simple events; they require a considerable, often painstaking, process.

During the course of the profession’s history, social workers have refined the art of reflective practice. Historically, these skills have been applied primarily to clinical, policy, advocacy, and administrative functions. Clearly, reflective practice should extend to ethics as well.
