SysUpTime network/server monitor is a powerful agentless network management software. It provides users out-of-box capabilities to efficiently and proactively manage any network of any size.

SysUpTime network monitor is easy to set up and use. It can monitor the availability and performance of your Windows and Linux/UNIX servers, workstations, software applications (SQL, Exchange, Web Servers, etc), and network devices (routers, switches, etc).     How It Works

    The manager or bookkeeper runs FlexiServer on their computer. Whenever the manager or bookkeeper wants to view reports they can log onto FlexiServer with their web browser and use the control panel.

Workstations will monitor hours even if the FlexiServer computer is offline, all the cached data will be sent to FlexiServer when it comes back online.     First, create a Linfo directory in your Apache or Nginx web root directory, then clone and move repository files into /var/www/html/linfo using the rsync command as shown below:

    Windows Performance Monitor or PerfMon is another great tool to capture metrics for your entire server. So far we discussed DMVs and Profiler which are great tools for finding out what is occurring within your SQL Server instance, but sometimes there are issues outside of SQL Server that may be causing performance issues. In this section we will take a look at PerfMon and how this tool can be used.


    The Performance Monitor tool allows you to capture and graph many aspects for the Windows server. There are counters for .NET, Disks, Memory, Processors, Network, etc. as well several counters related to each instance of SQL Server on the box. If you have multiple instances running on one server, the counters are available for each instance so you can see what is occurring at the instance level.

    Launching Performance Monitor

    You can launch Performance Monitor a few different ways.

    Start Control Panel Administrative Tools Performance Monitor or you can launch PerfMon.exe. Once this is running you will get an interface like the following:

    Above is the default look and feel when you launch this tool. Here we can see there is one counter “% Processor Time ” that is being tracked. For this counter we can see the following items:

    • Last – this is the last value that was captured for this counter
    • Average – this is the average value for the duration
    • Minimum – this is the minimum value for the duration
    • Maximum – this is the maximum value for the duration
    • Duration – this is the total collection time period and in this case it is 1:40 which is 1 minute and 40 seconds

    From this we can tell when there are peaks for specific counters that may be causing performance issues.

    Adding Counters and Changing Settings

    To add a counter, right click on the big green plus button above the graph and a new window will open like the following:

    From this window we can select additional counters such as Memory, Physical Disk and SQL Server specific counters. To add a counter select the counter and click the Add button. The below screen shot shows multiple counters that have been selected. Click OK when you are done to start capturing this data.

    The other thing you will want to do is change your duration and frequency for collecting data. By default it is set to sample the data every 1 second for a duration of 100 seconds. To change this right click on the graph and select Properties and a new window like the following will appear. If you click on the General tab you can set the sampling settings as shown below. In addition there are several other properties you can modify in this window.

    Once you click OK these settings will go in to effect immediately.

    Useful Counters

    Once you start to explore all of the counters it can be overwhelming since there are so many to choose from, so here are a few counters that would make sense to begin capturing. Also, once you start collecting it is also difficult to tell if you have an issue or not based on the values that are returned. Since there are no hard and fast rules for all counters the best approach is to capture these values when your system is running fine, so you can create a baseline. Then you can use these baseline numbers when you start to capture data. You can find some information online about specific counters and threshold values for each counter.

      • Avg. Disk sec/Read
      • Avg. Disk sec/Write

    After enabling the Windows Subsystem for Linux feature in Windows 10, the Linux bash can be run to install the Ubuntu user-mode image that runs on top of the Windows kernel layer that allows ELF64 binaries to operate in Windows. After installation, users can run other files from the Ubuntu package repository; Linux command-line utilities such as grep. sed, and awk; navigate the Linux file system; and execute scripts using command-line interface (CLI ) utilities.

    Windows Subsystem for Linux includes a user-mode session manager service to handle the Linux instance, minimized (Pico) processes to handle Linux system calls and Pico drivers to emulate the Linux kernel. As a whole, this architecture enables Linux system calls to be passed into and handled by the Windows kernel.

    Windows Subsystem for Linux is primarily for Linux developers operating in a Windows environment. For example, web developers often use Linux and other open-source tools but have limited access to full Linux systems for development and experimentation. Windows Subsystem for Linux lets developers use common Linux tools and advanced development languages, such as Ruby and Python, to operate through Windows.

    While Linux instances can run in Windows inside a virtual machine (VM), Windows Subsystem for Linux offers two advantages. First, it requires less overhead computing resources — processor, memory and storage — than a full VM. Second, Windows Subsystem for Linux allows both Windows and Linux environments to run simultaneously, so developers can use Windows applications and Linux utilities on the same files if needed.

    Windows Subsystem for Linux currently has several limitations. First, it does not support all Linux applications; it is intended to provide a tool to handle bash and major Linux command-line utilities. Windows Subsystem for Linux does not support Linux GUI environments such as Gnome or K Desktop Environment. Windows Subsystem for Linux only supports the Ubuntu Linux distribution at this time. In addition, Windows Subsystem for Linux is only available for Windows 10 and will not be available in Windows Server versions. While Windows Subsystem for Linux can run some Linux server applications, such as Redis as a database, it is not intended to host Linux server applications.

    Windows Subsystem for Linux employs two file systems to support Linux file conventions while providing interoperability with Windows files. A file system called VolFs supports Linux file conventions including Linux permissions, links to other files, names with characters not normally accepted under Windows and the Linux directory structure. However, VolFs does not support interoperability between its files and Windows applications, but another file system called DriveFs provides that interoperability, ensuring legal Windows file names, enforcing Windows security and supporting case-sensitive file names. The directory structure of DriveFs allows users to apply either Windows or Linux tools to files at the same time.

    Monitoring your network is an easy task with iftop. It shows a table of current bandwidth usage by hosts. iftop shows the pair of hosts which is responsible for the most traffic at the top of list, which makes it easier to identify the hosts that causes network congestion.

    Iftop output shows the data transfer rate, both for data sent and received, for the past 2 seconds, 10 seconds, and 40 seconds.

    This article provides an overview of iftop, installation instructions, sample usage example and screenshots of iftop.

    Overview of IFTOP

    • iftop (interface top) derives the name from the standard unix top command. top command displays real-time CPU Usage. iftop command displays real-time network bandwidth usage.
    • iftop displays the network usage of a specific interface on the host.
    • Using iftop you can identify which host is responsible for slowing down your network.
    • To find out which process is causing the problem, note down the port number from the iftop and use netstat -p to identify the process.
    • iftop monitors your network activity, and displays a table of current bandwidth.

    The default iftop command displays the bandwidth usage of the first ethernet device.

    You can also specify a particular interface with the -i option as shown below.

    While iftop is running, you can press any one of the following keys to display more output.

    If you execute iftop from a non-root account, you will get the following error message.

    /.iftoprc is the default configuration file for the iftop. The format of that file is name: value.

    iftop needs root access. Probably you can use sudo from your account to execute iftop.

    it s time for you to get back to Linux. . Find an old laptop/PC and install Ubuntu on it to get it started. For you it should be very easy as you ve used Unix earlier.

    Thank you for this introduction to iftop. Unfortunately, there are several options that are listed in help screen that I can t find any description; and you don t cover them either. Namely, f edit filter code and l set screen filter in the end, I figured `l option).

    Also, I ve been trying to figure out if it s possible to wrap the names of source hosts. Especially, when each connection takes two lines, it is unfortunate that long host names are truncated and the second line is wasted

    b. Select a Monitor Target (Monitor Target Scope must apply to the server that contains the service you want to monitor. If you target Server 2003 and the Server that contains the service you want to monitor is Server 2008 you monitor won t work)

    c. Uncheck Monitor is enabled (You do not want to leave the this checked. If you do SCOM will try to monitor for this service on all Servers based on the monitor target even if they don t contain the service you are trying to monitor. You will narrow the scope further and enable the monitor via an override once you are finished building it.)

    8. If you know the name the of the Service you can just type it in, but I recommend clicking the selection button to point the monitor to the exact name of the service you want to monitor to avoid troubleshooting later on.

    9. By default it will pull the available services from the management server you are running the console to see services from a different server click the button and browse to your desired server.

    23. Once your Override and recovery are in place schedule a time when it is ok to stop the service you are trying to monitor/recover so that you can observe the behavior to insure you made no errors as well as to see if you want to tweak the timeout.

    Nested ESXi Enhancements in vSphere 6 #vsphere #mini #monitor


    As many of you have probably heard by now, vSphere 6.5 was just announced at VMworld Barcelona this week and it is packed with a ton of new features and capabilities which you can read more about here. One area that is near and dear to me and has not been covered are some of the Nested ESXi enhancements that have been made in vSphere 6.5.

    To be clear, VMware has NOT changed its support stance in vSphere 6.5. Both Nested ESXi as well as general Nested Virtualization is still NOT officially supported. Okay, so thats out of the way now, lets see what is new?

    • Paravirtual SCSI (PVSCSI) support
    • GuestOS Customization
    • Pre-vSphere 6.5 enablement on vSphere 6.0 Update 2
    • Virtual NVMe support

    Lets take a closer look at each of these enhancements.

    Paravirtual SCSI (PVSCSI) support

    When vSphere 6.0 Update 2 was released, I had hinted that PVSCSI support might be a possibility in the near future. I am happy to announce that this is now possible with running Nested ESXi and having the guestOS as ESXi 6.5. In vSphere 6.5, a new GuestOS type has been introduced called vmkernel65 which is optimized for running ESXi 6.5 in a VM as shown in the screenshot below.

    As you can see from the VM Virtual Hardware configuration screen below, both the PVSCSI and VMXNET3 adapter are now the recommended default when creating a Nested ESXi VM for running ESXi 6.5.

    Similiar to the VMXNET3 driver, the PVSCSI driver is automatically bundled within the version of VMware Tools for Nested ESXi. That is to say, the drivers are included in the default ESXi image itself and is ONLY activated when ESXi detects that it is running inside of a VM. From a user standpoint, this means there are no additional configurations or installations that is required. You simply select ESXi 6.5 as the GuestOS and install ESXi as you normally would and this will automatically be enabled for you.

    The only requirement to leverage this new capability is that BOTH the GuestOS type is ESXi 6.5 (vmkernel65) and the actual OS is running ESXi 6.5. The underlying physical ESXi host can either be ESXi 6.0 or ESXi 6.5. In addition to new virtual hardware defaults, I have also found that the new ESXi 6.5 GuestOS type now uses EFI firmware over the legacy BIOS compared to previous ESXi 6.x/5.x/4.x GuestOS types.

    For customers who wish to push their storage IO a bit more for Nested ESXi guests, this is a great addition, especially with lower overhead when using a PVSCSI adapter.

    GuestOS Customization

    One of the very last capability that has been missing from Nested ESXi is the ability to perform a simple GuestOS customization when cloning or deploying a VM from template running Nested ESXi. Today, you can deploy my Nested ESXi Virtual Appliance which basically provides you with the ability to customize your deployment but would it not be great if this was native in the platform? Well, I am pleased to say this is now possible!

    When you go and clone or deploy a VM from template that is a Nested ESXi VM, you will now have the option to select the Customize guest OS option. As you can see from the screenshot below, you can now create a new Customization Spec which is based on the Linux customization spec. The customization only covers networking configuration (IP Address, Netmask, Gateway and Hostname) and only applies it to the first VMkernel interface, all others will be ignored. The thinking here is that once you have your Nested ESXi VM on the network, you can then fully manage and configure it using the vSphere API rather than re-creating the same functionality just for cloning.

    • Perform two configuration changes within the Nested ESXi VM which will prepare them for cloning. You can find the configuration changes described in my blog post here
    • Ensure BOTH the GuestOS type is ESXi 6.5 (vmkernel65) and the actual OS is running ESXi 6.5. This means that your underlying physical vSphere infrastructure can be running either vSphere 6.0 Update 2 or vSphere 6.5

    You can monitor the progress of the guest customization by going to the VM s Monitor- Tasks Events using the vSphere Web Client or vSphere API if you are doing this programmatically. Below is a screenshot of a successful Nested ESXi guest customization. If there are any errors, you can take a look at /var/log/vmware-imc/toolsDeployPkg.log within the cloned Nested ESXi VM to determine what went wrong.

    I know this will be a very welcome capability for customers who extensively use the guest customization feature or if you just want to quickly clone an existing Nested ESXi VM that you have already configured.

    Pre-vSphere 6.5 enablement in vSphere 6.0 Update 2

    By now, you probably have figured out what this last enhancement is all about It is exactly as it sounds, we are enabling customers to try out ESXi 6.5 by running it as a Nested ESXi VM on your existing vSphere 6.0 environment and specifically the Update 2 release (this includes both vCenter Server as well as ESXi). Although this has always been possible with past releases of vSphere running newer versions, we are now pre-enabling ESXi 6.5 specific Nested ESXi capabilities in the latest release of vSphere 6.0 Update 2. This means when vSphere 6.5 is generally available, you will be able to test drive some of the new Nested ESXi 6.5 capabilities that I had mentioned on your existing vSphere infrastructure. This is pretty darn cool if you ask me!?

    Virtual NVMe support

    I had a few folks ask on whether the upcoming Virtual NVMe capability in vSphere 6.5 would be possible with Nested ESXi and the answer is yes. Please have a look at this post here for more details.

    Monitor Network Speed and Uptime with a Server Uptime Monitor #server

    sMonitor is a server uptime monitor for your business. Since many businesses these days offer services based on application services to their customers, it is extremely important that network administrators know that all of their essential servers are up and running. sMonitor will inform you of this. sMonitor runs as a standard Windows application or as a Windows service. Since it can run as a Windows service, it can also run in the background even if no one is logged into the computer. It monitors all network servers and informs network administrators by using either an SMTP email service or a GSM SMS messaging service if a server comes online, goes offline or has its running state modified in any other way. This way, network administrators will always know about the online status of their servers in minimal time.

    The main sMonitor window, whether being displayed on not, is mirrored by a constantly updated HTML file which keeps a log of all monitored activity. This file is fully customizable from within the program and it may be uploaded to any remote Web server that uses the FTP protocol. A built-in script interpreter interacts with remote systems using either a modem or the telnet service to launch third-party software.

    Additional features of sMonitor include its support for ICMP, UDP and TCP protocols. It can also send protocol-specific UDP requests to ports 67 (DHCP), 123 (NTP), 137 (NETBIOS-NS), 161 (SNMP) and 389 (LDAP). sMonitor can also provide alerts of a server’s uptime status by way of alarms, both audible and visible. Network administrators can receive customized email messages from the software. sMonitor also creates log files in the plain text format and the universally supported CSV (Comma Separated Values) format. Files are sorted by servers and services. More advanced users may also create custom scripts and debug them as required. The server uptime monitor provides a wealth of unique features making it one of the top-end solutions of its kind. It has many more features and a wide selection of different notification features when compared to similar programs.

    The standard method of checking a server’s uptime using the Windows operating system is simply a matter of using the ping command. However, this is extremely limited and offers absolutely no logging or automated functionality, making it useful only in very specific purposes. When you need to monitor the uptime of one or more servers constantly, sMonitor presents an essential solution that every network administrator will find use for. Another standard solution is the PortQry utility available from Microsoft. It offers more sophisticated functionality than the ping command, but it is still limited and there is no user-friendly GUI provided since it is simply a command line utility. Neither of these solutions provide any functionality to automatically alert the user as to the uptime status of a server, however.

    Event Log Message Files (The description for Event ID – cannot


    Event Log Message Files (The description for Event ID cannot be found)

    Anybody who has used the built-in event viewer that comes with Windows more than once, has probably seen the message The description for Event ID ( 50 ) in Source ( SomeService ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. when viewing certain events. This message occurs more often when viewing events on a remote event log, but it appears often enough on the local machine as well.

    I will explain this dubious error message here, but before I do I will explain how messages are in fact logged to the event log. After reading this you should have a much clearer picture about how applications log to the event log and how you go about troubleshooting this error .

    The framework that Microsoft created for the event log, back in the NT 3.51 days, was actually quite sophisticated in many ways especially when compared with the more simplistic Syslog capabilities (though Syslog still has some unique features).

    A key feature of event logging in Windows is the fact that an application, at least when using the event log framework in the way it was intended to be used, will never actually directly write the actual message to the event log instead it will log only the event source and event id, along with some properties such as category and insertion strings. The framework also supports multiple languages, so if you open an event on a French Windows, then the event will display in French (of course assuming that the message file from the vendor supports that) instead of English.

    Let s look at an example using EventSentry to understand this better. When EventSentry detects a service status change, it will log the event 11000 to the event log that reads something like this:

    The service Print Spooler (Spooler) changed its status from RUNNING to STOPPED.

    When EventSentry logs this event to the event log, you would expect that the application does (in a simplified manner) something like this:

    However, this is NOT the case. The application logging to the event log never actually logs the message to the event log, instead the application would log something similar to this:

    LogToEventLog( EventSentry ,
    101000, RUNNING , STOPPED );

    (Note that the above example is for illustration purposes only, the actual code is somewhat more complicated)

    So, our actual string from the event message is nowhere to be found, and that s because the string is embedded in what is referred to as the Event Message File . The event message file contains a list of all events that an application could potentially log to the event log. Here is what an event message file looks like before it is compiled:

    Notice the numbers contained in the string that start with the percentage sign. These are placeholders for so-called insertion strings. and they make it possible to make the event log message dynamic, since an application developer can t possible account for all imaginable error message or information that might be accumulated during the runtime of the application. For example, an application might log the name of a file that is being monitored to the event log, clearly this can t be embedded into the event message file.

    Instead, the application can insert strings (hence, insertion strings) into the event message during run time. Those strings are then stored in the actual event log, along with all the other static properties of event, such as the event id and the event source.

    Event message files are usually DLL files, but event resources can also be embedded in executables as is the case in EventSentry. where all events are contained in the eventsentry_svc.exe file. This is generally a good idea, since it reduces the number of files that have to be shipped with the software and it also prevents you from losing the message DLL.

    You can browse through all embedded events in a message file by using the event message browser that is included in the free EventSentry SysAdmin Tools which you can download here. Simply launch the application, select an event log (e.g. Application), select an event source (e.g. EventSentry), and browse through all the registered event messages, sorted by the ID.

    So now that we know how Windows handles event messages internally, we can go back to the original problem: The description for Event ID ( 50 ) in Source ( SomeService ) cannot be found. . The Windows Event Viewer logs this message for one of the following reasons:

    * No message file is registered for the source (e.g. SomeService)
    * The registered message file does not exist or cannot be accessed
    * The specified event id is not included in the message file

    If the message file is not registered, then this is probably because the application wasn t installed correctly, or because it has already been uninstalled by the time you are trying to view the event message. For example, if the event message was logged before the application was uninstalled, but you are viewing the event after the application was uninstalled, then you will see this message.

    If the event you are trying to view is important, then you can try to fix the problem yourself by either fixing the registry entry or locating the missing event message file.

    The registry location depends on only two factors: The event log [EVENTLOG] the event was logged to as well as the event source [EVENTSOURCE].

    (Replace [EVENTLOG] and [EVENTSOURCE] with the respective values, and view/add/edit the value EventMessageFile. This is the value that points to the message file)

    If this value doesn t exist, then you can add it as either a REG_SZ or a REG_EXPAND_SZ value. You can specify multiple message files with a semicolon.

    If the message file specified in the value doesn t exist, then you can simply copy it into the appropriate location assuming you can get a hold of it that is :-). Oracle is notorious for not including the message file, in particular with the Express Edition.

    A final note on message files for those of you haven t had enough yet: You can use message files not only to translate event messages, but also for categories, GUIDs and more. Some of the values you might find (mostly in the security event log) are CategoryMessageFile, GuidMessageFile and ParameterMessageFile.

    Well, this article turned out a lot longer than I had anticipated, but hopefully you will have a better understanding as to why this message is logged and what you can do about it.

    How To Calculate Bandwidth Utilization Using SNMP

    There are no specific requirements for this document.

    This document is not restricted to specific software and hardware versions.

    The information in this document was created from the devices in a specific lab environment. All of the devices used in this document started with a cleared (default) configuration. If your network is live, make sure that you understand the potential impact of any command.

    It is sometimes necessary to calculate bandwidth use with SNMP.

    Use this solution to solve this problem.

    How you calculate use depends on how data is presented for what you want to measure. Interface use is the primary measure used for network use. Use this formulas, based on whether the connection you measure is half-duplex or full-duplex. Shared LAN connections tend to be half-duplex, mainly because contention detection requires that a device listen before it transmits. WAN connections are full-duplex because the connection is point-to-point; both devices can transmit and receive at the same time because they know there is only one other device that shares the connection. Because MIB-II variables are stored as counters, you must take two poll cycles and figure the difference between the two (hence, the delta used in the equation).

    This explains the variables used in the formulas:

    Note: ifSpeed does not accurately reflect the speed of a WAN interface.

    For half-duplex media, use this formula for interface use:

    It is more challenging to calculate for full-duplex media. For example, with a full T-1 serial connection, the line speed is 1.544 Mbps. Therefore, a T-1 interface can both receive and transmit 1.544 Mbps for a combined possible bandwidth of 3.088 Mbps!

    When you calculate the interface bandwidth for full-duplex connections, you can use this formula, where you take the larger of the in and out values and generate a use percentage:

    However, this method hides the use of the direction with the lesser value and provides less accurate results. A more accurate method is to measure the input use and output use separately, with this formula:

    These formulas are simplified because they do not consider overhead associated with the protocol. For example, refer to RFC 1757 Ethernet-utilization formulas that consider packet overhead.
