Train travel in New Zealand is a scenic experience

Each of the three scenic passenger rail journeys in New Zealand are unique, with views from the Northern Explorer train showing you the diverse countryside of the North Island – towering viaducts, spectacular gorges, hidden valleys, to the rugged coastline of the South Island, seen from the Coastal Pacific train to the mountain alpine scenery from the Tranz Alpine train.

Travel in air conditioned, centrally heated, carpeted carriages that have an advanced air bag suspension system for quieter and smoother travel, un-tinted, non-reflective, panoramic side and roof windows to capture the dramatic coastal and mountain views, GPS triggered journey commentary in two languages (English and Mandarin) at your seat via headphones, plus information displays, overhead HD video and onboard washroom facilities.

Seating is comfortable ‘2 Seat-Aisle-2 Seat’ reclining seats with head rests or ‘Table Group’ (4 people around a table) seating – great for families, small groups or meeting new friends.

For mobility-impaired passengers, there are spaces for wheel chairs and a disabled public toilet. Wheelchair hoists provide access to the cafe carriage from track level. For hearing-impaired passengers – a hearing loop covers all of the cafe carriage saloon and serving area.

All long distance passenger trains have a cafe carriage serving a range of snacks, light meals and non-alcoholic/alcoholic drinks and open air viewing carriage.

Your friendly onboard train crew are there to provide assistance to make your travel a comfortable and enjoyable experience.

With connecting scenic coach services, you can travel south from either Greymouth or Christchurch to the West Coast Glaciers, Queenstown, Milford Sound, Invercargill, Mt Cook/Aoraki, Invercargill (for ferry services to Stewart Island), Dunedin or from Auckland to Paihia in the Bay of Islands and the thermal wonderland of Rotorua.

You can explore New Zealand with a Scenic Rail Pass which allows you unlimited travel on New Zealand’s long distance passenger train network including ferry travel between Wellington in the North Island and Picton in the South Island, at you own pace, at any time, in any direction. You can choose your own route, stop when you like, and travel as many times as you wish within the validity of this flexible pass – hop on and hop off where and when you wish or choose from a range of suggested rail pass travel itineraries.

Alternatively, you can use a Scenic Train/Bus Pass, which allows you to travel on New Zealand’s long distance national passenger rail and bus travel networks at you own pace, at any time, in any direction, including ferry travel between the North and South Islands between Wellington in the North Island and Picton in the South Island and travel on modern buses and coaches to other tourist destinations, like Queenstown, Milford Sound, Mt Cook, the beautiful Bay of Islands and the thermal region of Rotorua to name a few destinations plus travel on New Zealand’s long distance passenger train services and selected sightseeing tours.

Both Scenic Rail Passes and Scenic Train/Bus Passes are designed for the independent traveller whether its individuals, families or small groups who want to get the best out of their New Zealand holiday and experience the true beauty and benefits of train and bus travel and provides genuine savings off the standard adult fare – so the more you travel the better the value.

New Order Indefinitely Bars Almost All Travel From Seven Countries –

New Order Indefinitely Bars Almost All Travel From Seven Countries

Travel new york

WASHINGTON — President Trump on Sunday issued a new order indefinitely banning almost all travel to the United States from seven countries, including most of the nations covered by his original travel ban, citing threats to national security posed by letting their citizens into the country.

The new order is more far-reaching than the president’s original travel ban, imposing permanent restrictions on travel, rather than the 90-day suspension that Mr. Trump authorized soon after taking office. But officials said his new action was the result of a deliberative, rigorous examination of security risks that was designed to avoid the chaotic rollout of his first ban. And the addition of non-Muslim countries could address the legal attacks on earlier travel restrictions as discrimination based on religion.

Starting next month, most citizens of Iran, Libya, Syria, Yemen, Somalia, Chad and North Korea will be banned from entering the United States, Mr. Trump said in a proclamation released Sunday night. Citizens of Iraq and some groups of people in Venezuela who seek to visit the United States will face restrictions or heightened scrutiny.

Mr. Trump’s original travel ban caused turmoil at airports in January and set off a furious legal challenge to the president’s authority. It was followed in March by a revised ban, which expired on Sunday even as the Supreme Court is set to hear arguments about its constitutionality on Oct. 10. The new order — Chad, North Korea and Venezuela are new to the list of affected countries and Sudan has been dropped — will take effect Oct. 18.

“As president, I must act to protect the security and interests of the United States and its people,” Mr. Trump said in the proclamation, which White House officials said had the same force as an executive order. He added that the restrictions will remain in effect until the governments of the affected nations “satisfactorily address the identified inadequacies.”

For Mr. Trump, whose efforts on health care, infrastructure improvements and tax reform are gaining little steam, the new order is a third attempt to make good on his campaign promise to respond to terrorist threats by tightening entry at the nation’s borders. In December 2015, he called for a complete ban on travel to the United States by Muslims “until our country’s representatives can figure out what the hell is going on,” though he later denied that he had sought a religious test on travel.

Officials described the new order as a much more targeted effort than the president’s earlier one. Each of the countries will be under its own set of travel restrictions, though in most cases citizens of the countries will be unable to emigrate to the United States permanently and most will be barred from coming to work, study or vacation in America.

Iran, for example, will still be able to send its citizens on student exchanges, though such visitors will be subject to enhanced screening. Certain government officials of Venezuela and their families will be barred from visiting the United States. Somalis will no longer be allowed to emigrate to the United States, but may visit with extra screening.

Administration officials said that the new rules would not apply to legal permanent residents of the United States, and that visitors who currently hold valid visas from the countries listed will not have their visas revoked.

That means that students already in the United States can finish their studies and employees of businesses in the United States who are from the targeted countries may stay for as long as their existing visas remain valid. People whose visas expire will be subject to the travel ban, officials said.

People seeking access to the United States as refugees are not covered by the proclamation, officials said. Entry of refugees is currently limited by the president’s original travel ban, and officials said the administration was preparing new rules for refugees that should be announced within days.

He’s in the U.S.; She’s in Iran: Couples Cope With the Travel Ban

President Trump issued a new order indefinitely barring almost all travel to the United States from seven countries, citing national security threats. We spoke with Iranian and American fiancés separated by the ban.

By NILO TABRIZY on Publish Date September 26, 2017. . Watch in Times Video

Reaction to the president’s announcement was swift, as some critics of the original travel ban expressed similar concerns about the president’s latest effort to bar potential terrorists and criminals.

“Six of President Trump’s targeted countries are Muslim. The fact that Trump has added North Korea — with few visitors to the U.S. — and a few government officials from Venezuela doesn’t obfuscate the real fact that the administration’s order is still a Muslim ban,” said Anthony D. Romero, the executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union.

“President Trump’s original sin of targeting Muslims cannot be cured by throwing other countries onto his enemies list,” Mr. Romero said.

But administration officials — who have long rejected the characterization of the president’s travel restrictions as a “Muslim ban,” — noted that the latest effort also applies to non-Muslim countries and was based on a rigorous evaluation of each country’s security capabilities.

One official who briefed reporters on Sunday evening insisted that the president’s travel restrictions were “never, ever, ever” based on race, religion or creed.

In a statement released by the White House, Mr. Trump defended the new proclamation, saying that “we cannot afford to continue the failed policies of the past, which present an unacceptable danger to our country. My highest obligation is to ensure the safety and security of the American people, and in issuing this new travel order, I am fulfilling that sacred obligation.”

The president’s announcement comes after the administration conducted what it described as an in-depth, worldwide, 90-day review of the security measures in place in other countries to prevent terrorists or criminals from entering the United States by applying to emigrate or to visit with a tourist, work or education visa.

Mr. Trump called for the review — and a temporary ban on travel from several majority-Muslim countries — just days after being inaugurated. But a fierce legal challenge to the travel ban delayed the security assessment until the summer.

Officials said last week that most nations already met new, minimum standards for identifying and screening potential travelers and sharing investigative information with law enforcement agencies in the United States. Some nations that initially fell short of those standards agreed to implement changes to avoid travel restrictions.

But several countries either failed to meet those standards or flatly refused, officials said. Homeland Security officials recommended to Mr. Trump in a report last week that he impose the new travel restrictions on the residents of those countries. The president’s 15-page proclamation accepted the recommendations, spelling them out in detail.

The proclamation imposes the most severe restrictions on Syria and North Korea, which Mr. Trump says fail to cooperate with the United States in any respect. All citizens from those countries will be denied visas to enter the United States once the proclamation goes into effect.

Most citizens of Chad, Libya and Yemen will be blocked from emigrating to or visiting the United States because the countries do not have the technical capability to identify and screen their travelers, and in many cases have terrorist networks in their countries, officials said.

The New York Times and RentaUnDron

A metropolis that has it all.

When Pope Francis visits Mexico City next month, he will draw the faithful from around the country. The Mexican capital, though, is attracting pilgrims of another kind: travelers seeking some of the world’s best cuisine, museums and forward-thinking design. With young people from around Latin America and Spain streaming into the city, and the Mexican peso hitting record lows against the dollar, the city — daunting and endless as it is — radiates energy.

Certainly, there is no more exciting place to eat. Enrique Olvera, who reinvented Mexican cuisine at Pujol, has inspired a generation of restaurants in his wake; recent openings include Fonda Fina in La Roma and Fonda Mayora in nearby Condesa.

Design fans can work up an appetite shopping for products by studios like David Pompa and Lagos del Mundo or for designs by Carla Fernández. Photography lovers have two new destinations: the FotoMuseo Cuatro Caminos and the newly renovated Centro de la Imagen.

But getting to know the city means diving into its colonias. In the shadow of Paseo de la Reforma, the city’s grand boulevard, the Colonia Cuauhtémoc, beckons business travelers and tourists alike, with the new design-conscious Carlota hotel and an increasing number of restaurants. Many other areas demand a more intimate exploration. You can stroll by the French-style 19th-century mansions of La Roma or take a turn around Parque México in Condesa.

Of course, there are places you should not wander but the city is far safer than it was in the 1990s, and taxi services like Uber and Yaxi make getting around a lot more comfortable. It’s also easier to get to: in the summer, AeroMéxico, JetBlue and American Airlines have boosted flights.

And if you’re overwhelmed, you can visit Futura CDMX, a scale model of the Federal District due to open soon — the latest flourish of pride in a city that’s ever coming back. Victoria Burnett

New Obama admin regulations on Cuba to make travel easier to

    #travel cuba
    #

Many Cubans welcome closer ties with U.S.

Washington (CNN) Americans will face fewer obstacles in traveling to Cuba under new regulations announced by the Obama administration on Thursday, continuing a promise to thaw relations with the country the President started last month.

While short of lifting the decades-old U.S. embargo on the island, a move that would require congressional approval, the administration’s new rules on travel and trade will likely herald a new era in ties between the two countries.

Under the softened regulations whose details were outlined in more detail Thursday, Americans will be able to visit Cuba without first seeking a license from the Treasury Department, so long as the travel meets certain criteria. The new regulations will take effect Friday, according to the U.S. Treasury.

President Barack Obama originally announced the change in U.S. policy on Cuba on Dec. 17, as part of a larger deal that secured the release of Alan Gross, an American government subcontractor who was imprisoned on the island for five years.

Cuban Americans traveling to see family members, American officials on government trips, journalists on assignment on the island as well as every day citizen visiting for educational, cultural, religious reasons will no longer need permission first.

The new regulations allow travel agents and airlines to book tickets for U.S. citizens to Cuba without a special license from the Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control known as OFAC.

Americans traveling to the island will also be allowed to use credit cards, a restriction that complicated trips to Cuba in the past.

“Today’s announcement takes us one step closer to replacing out of date policies that were not working and puts in place a policy that helps promote political and economic freedom for the Cuban people,” Treasury Secretary Jack Lew said in a statement.

In unveiling the new regulations, the Obama administration revealed it is moving to establish a U.S. embassy in Havana, allowing American officials to make purchases that will revamp U.S. diplomatic facilities that already exist in the Cuban capital.

Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker is slated to visit Cuba later this year.

“Today’s actions, which are being taken in coordination with the U.S. Department of the Treasury, give legal effect to the historic policy changes that President Obama announced,” Pritzker said in a statement.

The administration’s rules still present challenges for Americans traveling to Cuba. U.S. citzens will only be allowed to import up to $100 in alcohol and tobacco products, under the regulations, setting a limit on the number of Cuban cigars Americans will be permitted to bring home.

Chris Chiames, Orbitz’s vice president of corporate affairs, says the travel booking site expects to have flights to Cuba, as well as hotel options, available to consumers in 2015.

“We’re working through how to turn that on quickly. It’s not going to be tomorrow,” he said, adding U.S. citizens should expect “travel sometime in 2015.”

In the short term, Chiames said it’s unlikely travelers will be able to fly on U.S. carriers. The first step appears to be giving consumers the ability to book tickets on international carriers like Air Canada, Aeromexico. Travelers could fly from the U.S. to cities in Canada and Mexico, for example, and then make connections to Havana.

Chiames said U.S. carriers are still working through DOT to determine how quickly they will be able to offer service from American cities.

Republicans have blasted Obama’s move to thaw decades-old tensions with Cuba. Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Florida) said Thursday that the new policies will have the effect of “enriching a tyrant” without benefiting Cubans.

“This is a windfall for the Castro regime that will be used to fund its repression against Cubans, as well as its activities against U.S. national interests in Latin America and beyond,” he said. “Given existing U.S. laws about our Cuba policy, this slew of regulations leave at least one major question President Obama and his administration have failed to answer so far: what legal authority does he have to enrich the Castro regime in these ways?”

Google Flights offers 6 new ways to score cheap airline tickets

Google has introduced a new search tool that makes finding the best airfare deal significantly easier. If you have your destination ready and your travel dates are flexible, your chances of snagging the lowest price goes up. That s because Google Flights will present a calendar of the dates with the cheapest prices for your travel.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) Google has introduced a new search tool that makes finding the best airfare deal significantly easier.

Lowest prices by time of year

If you have your destination ready and your travel dates are flexible, your chances of snagging the lowest price goes up. That s because Google Flights will present a calendar of the dates with the cheapest prices for your travel.

The prices that Google shows will appear in gray and green (green for lowest).

When you click on the day you want to travel, Google will list the flights for that date in order of cost, grouping together all the times when you can fly at the lowest price.

Chart tools created to monitor yearly trends

If you re curious about what time of the year flights between two cities are the lowest, Google Flights can show you a bar chart that will give you a glimpse of the best prices throughout the year.

    Google Maps with flight prices

Maybe you know when you want to fly, but you re not sure where to go? Google Flights has an interactive map that will show you prices for destinations around the world.

    I m feeling lucky

You can also search for generic terms, such as flights to Europe or flights to Mexico. Google Flights also has an I m feeling lucky button that will suggest popular destinations and other locations based on your search history.

Don t know where to go?

Google said it found that 54% of people don t know where they want to travel when they decide to plan their vacations.

What Google doesn t show is whether prices will drop in the near future. Microsoft Bing and Kayak provide services that predict when prices are expected to rise or fall.

But Google said those tools aren t typically very helpful.

Don t know when to go?

Though it s sometimes hard to pull the trigger because you re afraid the price will drop tomorrow (or next Tuesday, maybe?), our experience shows it s usually best to book right away, said Eric Zimmerman, Google Flights product manager, in a blog post.

A nifty trick is to save your flight booking on Google Flights and use the Google Now app to receive updates if the price drops substantially.  Although there are not guarantees when it comes to the price of airfare, if you re unsure that s a great way to be able to jump on the discount, if it happens.

In 2011, Google purchased a company called ITA, which provides flight information to websites, such as Expedia, Kayak, Hipmunk and Priceline. The data Google controls includes flight times, availability and prices.

Competitors Kayak and Expedia initially opposed the deal before the Department of Justice forced Google to promise that it would continue to promote competition.

New Low-Cost Airline: PEOPLExpress Tickets Go on Sale

The days of the airline stewardess joke — coffee, tea, or me? — are gone in more ways than one.

Tickets from $59 went on sale Wednesday afternoon for PEOPLExpress. the new airline that seeks to capitalize on the goodwill for the name of one of the first low-budget airlines that disappeared decades ago amid industry consolidation. But with its new a la carte pricing for everything from overhead bin space to coffee, tea and water, unprepared fliers may be in for sticker shock.

All of the airline’s flights will be in and out of its hub at Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport in Virginia, with only three destinations when it starts flying June 30. The airline’s two daily round-trip flights to Newark, New Jersey, will start with base fares from $76 each way; a daily round-trip to Boston will cost $76 each way; and its daily round-trip to Pittsburgh will cost $59 each way.

Service to West Palm Beach, Florida, will start July 15 with one daily round-trip flight and fares priced from $89 each way.

Flights to Atlanta will start Aug. 1 with one-way fares priced at $79. The Atlanta route will offer round-trip service once a day, except Tuesdays.

On Aug. 28, service will start to New Orleans for $119 each way as well as to St. Petersburg/Clearwater, Florida, from $89 each way. Only three weekly round-trips will be offered to St. Petersburg and New Orleans.

All those fares come with a serious restrictions apply asterisk as fliers will have to pay extra for services that many other airlines still offer for free.

On board, coffee or tea will sell for $1; soft drinks water and juice will cost $2; beer will be $5; and a proper cocktail will set you back $7.

Carry-on bags in overhead bins will cost $25 per bag per flight segment while a single checked bag will cost $20, and a second will add $25 more and if you must, $75 for a third. If you have to check a bag at the gate, that’s $50, and if it’s overweight, an extra $75 fee will apply. An exit-row seat will cost an extra $25 each way while more comfortable Living Large seats will cost an extra $59 per flight segment. Advance seat assignments cost $15 each way.

On board, coffee or tea will sell for $1; soft drinks water and juice will cost $2; beer will be $5; and a proper cocktail will set you back $7. The good news comes on the snacks pricing: Complimentary.

Carry-on bags will be free if they fit under your seat, a company spokesman said.

This past Friday, the airline announced it would launch. and technically will be known as Vision Airlines, dba PEOPLExpress while it gets its full certification from the Federal Aviation Administration. It will fly leased 150-seat Boeing 737-400 aircraft operated by Las Vegas-based Vision Airlines.

PEOPLExpress hopes to expand to 24 cities within five years, with hubs in Pittsburgh; New Orleans; San Antonio, Texas; and Atlantic City, New Jersey, CEO Jeff Erickson told CNBC in an interview last week.

At its first hub, the airline will operate two gates on Concourse A at Newport News. Tickets can only be purchased through its website or its call center, which is open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern time.

The original PEOPLExpress began flying in 1981 and was based at Newark. It was later acquired by Continental, which was then acquired by United. The new airline has adopted the old logo, but with a new green scheme rather than the old brown, burgundy and orange. Otherwise the new airline is not affiliated with the old airline of the same name, Erickson said, except that some of the executives worked for the old airline.

PEOPLExpress isn’t the only new airline with plans to take off this year. An all-business class airline, tentatively called Dream Jet, has announced plans to fly between Paris and New York. And Eastern Air Lines Group has filed its initial application with the U.S. Department of Transportation to begin operations.

    New York (state)

The state of New York [1] is known as the Empire State, and with good reason. As one of the original thirteen colonies that formed the United States. it has long been counted among the most populous and most influential states.

New York is a state of superlatives. Of course everyone knows the most celebrated city in the world. New York City. and it’s certainly a premier travel destination, but the state is so much more than just one famous metropolis. Go beyond the concrete canyons of Manhattan and you’ll find a large state with a variety of attractions.

From the magnificent Niagara Falls. to the farms and wineries of the Finger Lakes ; from the untamed wilderness of the Adirondacks. to the large and small cities scattered throughout the state; every corner of New York has something you can’t find anywhere else.

    Regions Edit

Some people say that New York has two regions: New York City and “Upstate”—i.e. everything else. In fact, New York is a large state with a number of distinct travel regions.

New US-Cuba travel and trade rules come into effect – BBC

New US-Cuba travel and trade rules come into effect

    16 January 2015

Media caption Cubans hope that with the lifting of trade restrictions they will be able to import rare commodities such as car parts, as Will Grant reports

New travel and trade rules between the US and Cuba have come into effect in the biggest policy shift between the two countries in more than 50 years.

Measures include allowing US citizens to use credit cards in Cuba and for US businesses to export some technologies.

Americans will be able to take home up to $100 (£66) in alcohol and tobacco from Cuba.

The move implements last month’s agreement to re-establish ties severed since 1961.

Although the latest moves put a large dent in the US trade embargo against Cuba’s communist government, only Congress can lift it completely.

Earlier this week, US officials said Cuba had completed the release of 53 political prisoners agreed as part of the historic deal.

    Policies ‘out of date’

White House press secretary Josh Earnest said the changes would “immediately enable the American people to provide more resources to empower the Cuban population to become less dependent upon the state-driven economy”.

Media caption Tomas Bilbao: “Failed policy of isolation and confrontation”

While ordinary tourism is still banned, the new regulations will allow US citizens to travel to Cuba for any of a dozen specific reasons without first obtaining a special licence from the government.

United Airlines announced on Thursday plans to begin flying to Cuba from its terminals in Houston and Newark.

US credit and debit cards can be used there and there will be no more limits on how much money US citizens can spend in Cuba each day.

About 170,000 authorised US travellers went to Cuba last year, according to the US Department of Commerce.

US firms will also find it easier to export mobile phones and software to Cuba, as well as provide internet services there.

Cuba currently has one of the lowest internet penetration rates in the world – estimated at about 5% by the White House.

A change in the regulations will also allow US investments in some small businesses and agricultural operations.

    ‘Repression against Cubans’

The thaw in relations between the two countries was announced last month in simultaneous televised speeches by President Barack Obama and his Cuban counterpart, Raul Castro.

Image caption Americans will be able to bring home small numbers of Cuban cigars after a ban of more than 50 years

Image caption Some of the 53 prisoners released by the Cuban authorities last week gathered to celebrate in Havana

Next week, US Assistant Secretary of State Roberta Jacobson will lead a delegation to Cuba to discuss migration issues.

They will be the first high-level talks since the easing of relations was announced.

President Obama used his executive powers to ease the embargo, defying hardline critics. Analysts say Congress is unlikely to agree to lift the embargo completely any time soon.

Cuban-American Republican Senator Marco Rubio said Mr Obama’s policy would harm ordinary Cubans.

“This is a windfall for the Castro regime that will be used to fund its repression against Cubans,” he said in a statement.

    New Zealand Adventure Tours

We challenge you to find a country that packs more untouched, dramatic and diverse scenery into a smaller space than New Zealand. The light here is different somehow, making the fiords, glaciers, rainforest, volcanoes, beech forests and rugged coastlines crisper, brighter and a bit more intense than you’d ever expect.

You’ll find yourself surrounded by some of the best scenery on the planet with few signs of civilisation and no one else around. As an independent nation that lies across the Tasman Sea from Australia, New Zealand is home to only four and a half million people. About a third of them reside in Auckland city and the rest are spread out around two main islands, which together are about half the size of California, leaving vast tracts nearly uninhabited. It’s no wonder a lot of visitors find it hard to leave!

Kiwis are warm, resourceful and as friendly as they come. They’ll charm you with their accent, wave as you pass by on a country road and often stop for a chat. With no snakes, land predators like big cats or bears, or any other nasty critters to bite you on the trail, New Zealand is a haven for hikers. We have, however, got plenty of lambs frolicking in the paddocks, Tui birds calling in the forests and fur seals lazing in the sun on the rocky shores.

With a very extensive network of hiking and biking trails and almost 1000 backcountry huts. the options for exploring our wilderness can be overwhelming. Luckily, we’ve spent years ‘tramping’ (the Kiwi term for hiking) in the mountains, biking the trails and paddling the calm waters to hand pick the best. Some spots, such as the Milford Track. are deservedly world renowned, while other amazing locations are virtually undiscovered. Off the trail, our towns are charming and unique and since Kiwis love their creature comforts, you’ll never be too far from a beautifully made cup of coffee. Sweet as!

Why Travel with Active Adventures New Zealand?

We’ve been doing this a while and we are New Zealand’s most experienced and trusted adventure tour operator.

You can be rest assured that when you book a New Zealand vacation package with us, you’re going to experience the real NZ. We’re passionate about sharing our backyard with you!

    New Zealand Travel Guide

New Zealand is the adventure capital of the world. Hiking, skydiving, caving, bungy jumping, skiing everything here is geared towards getting you outside and doing something good. As a popular destination for backpackers and budget travelers, New Zealand is really affordable and offers many ways to save money. I loved my time in New Zealand the people were friendly, the country was beautiful, and you meet a lot of great travelers there. It s one of the best countries in the world and this travel guide can help you plan your trip there. It s a place not to be missed.

    Destination Guides for New Zealand

    Typical Costs

Accommodation Hostel dorms cost between 20-30 NZD per night, while private rooms begin at 50 NZD, but you are probably looking at around 75 NZD for a double room. Budget hotels begin around 60 NZD per night for a double room, but prices average closer to 90 NZD. There are many camping places throughout the country. Campsites cost about 15 NZD per night.

Food Eating out is really expensive here. A restaurant meal with table service can cost about 35-40 NZD. If you choose to cook your food, plan to spend about 75 NZD per week. You can find sandwiches for 8 NZD and fast food like McDonald s or Burger King will cost between 7-15 NZD. Drinks at the bar will cost around 8 NZD.

Transportation Getting around the country is fairly cheap. The bus system is quite inexpensive and the Naked Bus (it s just a name!) has promotional fares for 1 NZD if you book far in advance. Otherwise, most fares are about 20 NZD, slightly more if you are going long distances. Flying can be expensive since there isn t a lot of competition among airlines here. Most single journey tickets are 120-240 NZD.

Activities Activities run the gambit and can cost between 100-600 NZD. There are a lot of outdoor activities and tourism here is constructed around getting people outside. Budget extra for activities as they can really destroy a budget and will be your biggest expense while you are here.

    Money Saving Tips

Free wi-fi Internet on New Zealand is slow and expensive. McDonalds and libraries offer free wi-fi.

Learn to cook Since eating out is ridiculously expensive, the best way to save money is to cook your own food as often as possible. Depending on your food needs, you could eat for about 75 NZD per week. While the cafes in New Zealand are good, you don t miss out on a lot of top cuisine by cooking.

Choose wisely Tours cost a lot of money in New Zealand. A few of these are enough to bust any budget and send home you before you had planned. Pick the ones you really want to do and save the rest for another trip.

Hit happy hour The backpacker bars have cheap happy hours offering 5 NZD drinks. Hit them up and drink for cheap. Otherwise, plan to spend 9 NZD for a beer at the bar.

WWOOF it WWOOFing is a great way to work for your accommodation and food. In return for working on a farm or B B, you get free food and board. It s a popular activity with travelers because it lets you stay in a place cheaper and longer. You can do it for a few days or a few months.

Clean for your room Many hostels let you trade a few hours of cleaning and making beds for free accommodation.

Car share Car shares are a popular transportation option for travelers looking to lower costs. All you need to do is chip in for gas. You can find rides on websites like Gumtree, Craigslist, or Jayride. Additionally, you ll see people asking for rides on hostel bulletin boards.

Top Things to See and Do in New Zealand

Stay awhile in Queenstown The action capital the country, this is one of the funnest cities I ve ever been in. There s a lot of outdoor activities and sports (bungy jumpy is the most popular) to do in the area, amazing restaurants, and the best night life in New Zealand. Everyone who comes ends up staying longer than planned. Don t skip Fergburger amazing burgers.

Hike Franz Josef Glacier Hiking these glaciers is pretty amazing. There s not much in this town besides the glacier hiking. Be sure to crawl through the glacier tunnels! They are pretty cool.

Get your LOTR Fix at Tongariro Crossing Labeled the best one-day hike in New Zealand, this walk takes you through where they filmed Mordor in Lord of the Rings. You walk through volcanic terrain, near high peaks, and sulfur lakes before finishing off in a dense forest. The walk takes a full day. Be prepared to that your legs will be sore for a few days after. But it will be worth the sense of accomplishment that comes with completing the hike.

Relax in the Bay of Islands North of Auckland, this area has some of the best opportunities for dolphin and whale watching, relaxing on the beach, swimming, boating, and eating seafood. The area is very low key. It s a popular summer and weekend getaway place for Aucklanders.

Bungy jump Any adrenaline seeker worth his/her salt will do the 500 foot Nevis Bungy Jump outside of Queenstown. If that s too high, there are smaller ones in Auckland and Queenstown.

Skydive Another popular adventure activity, skydiving is best over Lake Taupo. It provides the best backdrop as you plunge to Earth from 14,000 foot Taupo. There s also sky diving in Queenstown.

Visit Abel Tasman National Park Located in the south island, this national park looks like something out of Asia with its turquoise blue water, dense jungles, and warm temperatures. There are many multi-day hiking trails and beautiful sea kayaking throughout the park.

Hang out in Wellington New Zealand s capital has great architecture, character, fantastic nightlife, restaurants, and cultural activities. I found it to be the most arty city in New Zealand and enjoyed it more than Auckland. I just found there was more cultural activity here.

Experience the Waitomo Glowworm Caves Explore these caves in sheer darkness with nothing but the glow of glowworms to guide your way. It s an exciting activity as you float down rivers and jump over waterfalls and watch the starry sky in the cave.

Maori Cultural Show Maori culture is important to understanding life in this country. You find Maori symbols and words throughout the country. See a cultural show while you are there to get a better understanding of the life and history of the country s native population.

Go dolphin and whale watching Whether you go from the Bay of Islands, Auckland, or down in the south island, the country is the migratory route for many of these creatures and you re bound to see lots of them no matter when you go.

Go skiing During the winter months, the south island, especially the are around Queenstown, has snow covered mountains that offer some of the best skiing in the southern hemisphere.

Unwind in Rotorua Rotorua is famous for its Maori cultural shows and for its smell. All around the city are sulfur mud pits that give the city a unique odor. If you are looking for a place to relax, Rotorua, with the variety of spas it has, is the place to go.

Get outdoors in Kaikoura This is a coastal town, several miles north of Christchurch. It is set within a peninsula, which makes it an awesome place to enjoy the mountain scenery while watching for whales, dolphins, and winter-friendly animals. Additionally, there are is an interesting museum, a handful of historical sights, and the Maori Leap limestone cave.

Wander through Wellington Botanic Gardens Of all the beautiful gardens throughout the country, this is perhaps the most popular. There is a vast tract of native forest, in addition to an international plant collection, a rose garden, and a landscaped area complete with duck pond, playground, sculptures, a café, and more.

Ride the gondola If you are in Christchurch, the gondola ride is highly recommended and a pretty fundamental experience. The ride starts on the Heathcote Valley floor and takes you up the side of Mt Vaendish. There is a nice restaurant at the top that allows you to peer out over the landscape as you eat. Many people cycle back down, but there is also a tram ride available.

Super Cheap Car Rental Announces The Winner of It’s “Not So New Car Giveaway Selfie Contest”

California Car Rental Company Gives Away a 2006 4-door 5-passenger Toyota Corolla

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) November 30, 2015

In 2014, Super Cheap Car Rental announced their Not So New Car Giveaway Selfie Contest to offer their customers a chance to win a 2006 4-door 5-passenger Toyota Corolla. This month, they are thrilled to announce the winner. Congratulations to Sarah Jane Cass for winning the Not So New Car Giveaway!

The Not So New Car Giveaway was held for loyal customers of Super Cheap Car Rental as a way to show their gratitude for the community that has collected around the company. Cass, who rents from Super Cheap with every visit to L.A. posted her selfie and won the prize by popular vote via Facebook. We spoke with Cass to get her thoughts on the big win and why she chooses to rent with Super Cheap.

I had nightmares in the past with big car rental companies, explains Cass. She contrasts her experiences of renting from big corporations with the friendly, no surprise experience of Super Cheap rentals. It was what I expected. I had really lovely email conversations about pricing and what it would include before I booked. I just didn t have any surprises and having zero excess charges I think it s a really great plus, as well.

Cass began renting from Super Cheap when she was staying with her friend in Los Angeles. She discovered that in the fast pace, expansive metropolis of LA, it was easier to drive than to take public transit for the month she was there. To avoid the exorbitant amounts of big corporate companies, her friend recommended that Cass take advantage of Super Cheap s affordable long-term rates. During that time, she learned that the benefits of Super Cheap are more than just affordability. She explained her first rental as a very lovely experience and described how they [Super Cheap agents] checked in two weeks later to see how the rental car was doing and if I had any problems. Cass has been renting from Super Cheap ever since.

    Enjoy the Corolla, Sarah!

What Are The Best New Travel-Booking Sites?

    Share Tweet Email

Take a trip around the web and check out alternative online travel agents. : Bet_Noire/ThinkStock

The Internet should make booking a trip easier. If only. Let s not forget that today s web is first and foremost a marketplace and the market for travel-booking and search sites is crowded, which can make planning your next journey a little daunting.

On one side, you have online travel agencies such as Priceline and Expedia. on the other mega-search engines such as Google and Bing offering their own flight and hotel search options. In the middle, aggregators such as Kayak ostensibly allow users to compare everyone else s screamin deals (I say ostensibly because many of these aggregators are now owned by the agencies, making things a little, you know, conflict-y).

Mercifully, a new wave of travel sites has popped up to try to muffle (and compete with) some of this noise, each appealing to a specific stripe of traveler or trip.

Rather than just find the cheapest seats a la Priceline and Expedia, Routehappy s database can search by roomiest seat, in-seat power and best IFE. Such amenities may drive up ticket prices a bit, but the site is banking on the fact that some fliers will pay more for a more civilized flight.

Like Routehappy, this aggregator sells saner travel, sorting flights by shortest length, fewest layovers and lowest price. You can also search for hotels by ecstasy ranking, not to mention track your site history, so you can access it later. Throw in a killer interface and Hipmunk gets my vote for one of the finest travel sites around.

    1 check-in First to Review

My son and his brother are using this company to travel to NC. A one way ticket is $60.00 I guess that reasonable.

The bus was originally suppose to leave at 8 pm upon my arrival at 7 pm. I was informed the bus was now leaving at 9 pm.

But guess what the bus still isn t here, every time I ask the person at the counter where the bus is I m being told it will be here any minute. I swear if that man says that one more time I may be inclined to slap him. The bus finally arrived at 9:45 pm.

The only I like about this company is the fact that they have assigned sitting.

I m happy to report my son arrived safely to North Carolina

3 Online Travel Sites You Shouldn t Miss

With so many travel booking websites out there, it’s sometimes hard to know which one to use. While many of us are familiar with larger, established sites like Expedia, Travelocity, and Kayak, there are a number of up and coming travel sites you may not be as familiar with.

    Updated (9/15/2011):

One of the newest flight search engines to hit the radar is Google Flights . Launched in September, 2011, it hasn’t reached our favorites list yet, but it does look quite promising.

Google Flights is powered by technology Google acquired earlier in the year when it finalized the purchase of Cambridge, Mass. based ITA Software. While not substantially different from other sites that let you search for flights, it is one of the fastest we’ve used. The site uses location information from your computer to anticipate your departure airport and it pre-fills this info into the flight search form. (The site correctly guessed our airport when using a desktop computer near Washington, D.C. but oddly thought we’d be departing from New York when using an Android smartphone with GPS enabled at the same desk.) Start the search by entering a destination city (or choosing one from the list of popular destinations) and a list of flights is immediately displayed based on a 5-day trip beginning about 2 weeks from today. A clever calendar view displays a bar graph of prices by date and a scatter graph lets you move sliders to find the best balance of price and flying time. Clever, albeit a bit complicated.

Once you’ve found the flight you want, the site takes you to the website of your chosen airline and pre-fills the info about your selected flight to help speed your purchase — though this feature didn’t work for some airlines. As with most Google products, expect a series of rapid improvements and enhancements in the near future as the product matures.

And now, for our current favorite travel booking websites:

This “hip” site has a clean, intuitive design which makes it a breeze to search for a flight or hotel. A simple form on the homepage lets you enter your desired flight or hotel information, while the HipMunk mascot, a travel-ready chipmunk, smiles at you. Results are displayed chronologically in a novel Gantt-chart format that makes it easy to zero in on the departure and arrival times. (You can also sort by price, stops, departure time, arrival time, or duration.) Our favorite sorting criteria, which is also the default, is the “Agony” option—which combines price, duration and number of stops into a single criteria.

A tab at the bottom right, which also appears on the home page, offers the option of live help. The hotel search on HipMunk gives you the option to select a hotel based on what you want near you—whether that be shopping, food or nightlife. The results are displayed on a map with each hotel represented by a dot, so you can easily see which hotels are nearest your chosen activity.

Momondo is another easy new way to start your travel plans. Taking a slightly different approach, Momondo searches 800+ travel sites to help you find and compare flights, hotels, and car rentals. Choose your best option and get linked to the airline or travel agency that offers that deal.  Enter your preferred dates right on the homepage, and a list of flight options shows up very quickly.

You can narrow your results by the number of stops, preferred airlines, layover cities or price. The beauty of Momondo is how deep it goes pulling the best deals for you—ones you may have spent hours looking for and still not found. Its search engine moves fast, and moves through it all, to find you your best travel options.

Matrix is a refreshing take on the travel booking site. Its Spartan design may be a turn-off for some but we like that the site is uncluttered and free of advertisements. (Matrix is the software that powers many of the larger travel sites including CheapTickets and Orbitz.) In lieu of fancy design, the folks at Matrix have clearly spent their time refining the ways to shop for your travel plans. Complete your initial search, which requires a bit more information than HipMunk and Momondo, such as the option to choose which cabin you prefer, and your search results appear.

The results promise the best deals, but the real fun begins once you choose an option that may work. Click on your chosen option, and it takes you to another page where you can view events and tours that are happening during your trip.

    The Bottom Line

Despite different features these sites offer, many of us still use travel sites primarily to search for the lowest price. To see how these sites stacked up against each other and the competition, we priced three sample trips: Raleigh-Durham to Las Vegas, Denver to Orlando, and Phoenix to Chicago.

For all three trips, the prices were the same across all the sites—including Expedia and Travelocity. We also like that the airfare on these three sites included all the fees and tariffs in the total so you see the price you’ll actually pay.
