    Travel Housing – “Home Away from Home”

    You may think once you accept an offer by a facility to fill their need you are in the final stages of securing your travel assignment but hold on – there are still very important issues that need to be address. In addition to signing up for health benefits, getting the orientation details of the assignment, and completing any remaining documentation there is the critical aspect of your housing. This detail may sound simple, but as you’ll come to realize, there are numerous aspects involved in securing just the right accommodations that can be the difference in making your 13-week assignment a heavenly experience rather than a living. well, you get the point.

    There are numerous factors to consider when discussing housing. First of all, do you even want your travel company to make the arrangements for your housing or would you prefer to receive a “stipend.” A stipend is merely regular payments, a housing allowance, you would receive instead of accepting housing provided by your travel company. The actual amount of the stipend is based on the actual allowances provided for by IRS guidelines which take into account the cost of living in location in which you will be working. For example, the cost of living in San Diego, CA is more expensive than say, Houston, TX and therefore, would allow for a greater dollar amount. A travel nurse may prefer to elect the stipend if, for example, they are driving their own RV to the assignment, maybe they are staying with family or a friend or possible they or someone they know have traveled to an area in the past and highly recommend a certain place to live. Sad to say, but unfortunately, there is another reason a nurse may choose to line up their own housing. They may have had a terrible experience on a previous assignment with an unscrupulous travel company who was more concerned with lowering their expenses by providing cheap housing than they were with the safety and happiness of the nurse and now the nurse if fearful to trust other companies and prefer to make their own arrangements. A final reason a nurse may choose a stipend would be the length of the assignment contract – less than 13 weeks. As a general rule, the shortest lease on most conventional housing options (apartments, single family homes, etc.) is 3 months.

    If you do want to take the company housing, there may be several or few options depending on the location of your assignment. If you are working in a larger city, there are normally more choices to select from. If you are working in a rural or an extremely remote location, there may be very few options from which to choose. When most new travelers think of housing, they assume that it will be living in an apartment complex. While this is normally the case, there are other alternatives such as single family homes, mobile homes, extending stay facilities and even housing that is provided by the hospital itself.

    Everyone has a different idea of what their “perfect housing experience” would look like.

    Although there may be limiting options depending on your specific circumstances, to help ensure the most enjoyable experience possible, open up a dialogue with your company’s housing coordinator. By doing this, they will get a sense of what your priorities and preferences are – what is truly important to you and what may just be nice amenities to have. Location is always a concern. Sure it is nice to be close to the facility for convenience sake, but if it is an undesirable area, maybe a little farther out would be a better decision. Other aspects go without saying such as if arrangements need to be made if you are traveling with family or if a furry companion will be accompanying you on your journey. Other considerations may not be so obvious such as potential noise issues. This may not be as big a deal if you are working days but many assignments are night positions which make it crucial to find housing in which you can actually sleep after that long 12-hr shift. It’s going to be a little tougher to doze off, for example, if the complex sits along a busy interstate, the people in the apartment above you are moving about all day long or if your unit is located next to the pool. If you’re working at a teaching hospital in a college town, are you going to be negatively impacted by the college party scene? Does the facility have the amenities (pool, fitness center, etc) you are hoping for or the convenience of an on-site business center to use the computer or send/receive packages or faxes? Are there laundry facilities on the property or possibly even in your unit? Most of these questions can be answered if adequate time and effort is put into researching potential locations prior to selecting the best option.

    Once the location is selected, then the unit has to be appropriately furnished (unless the nurse prefers to make other arrangements).. We recommend working with a travel company that utilizes a reputable rental company to provide furniture for your unit. These companies have profession interior decorators buyers on staff to ensure your furniture is complementary and of decent quality rather than just mis-matched pieces that have been thrown together. In addition to the furniture, be sure to make sure the company provides the necessary house wares – not all do. This is important if you prefer sleeping on a bed with sheets and blankets and don’t like to eat with your fingers all the time. The unit should have all of the basic necessities to comfortably accommodate your stay. Finally, a good company should make the necessary arrangements so that your housing is ready when you arrive. The last thing you want to do after driving across the country is open the door to your new living quarters and see a bunch of stacked boxes and no linen on the bed. When you arrive, the unit should be in turn-key condition – dishes glasses put away, utensils in the drawers, sheets on the bed – you get the point.

    As you can see, there are many factors that need to be considered and addressed to make sure your travel assignment is as pleasurable as possible and the housing component can make a big difference in your overall satisfaction. Be sure to give it the necessary time it deserves to ensure that you have an enjoyable stay – after all, it may be temporary but it is for 3 months of your life – why not make them as gratifying as possible.

    Use your imagination to make a deal that works for them and you (Win/Win). Sometimes you have to put your foot down and say what your needs are and be able and willing to back off if they don’t meet those needs.

    You may be using Travel Nursing as a way to shop for a perm job so discuss clauses in the contract that may prevent this or limit this.

    Ask what the housing stipend is to get an idea on how much they are spending for your housing but this may not be the amount they are actually spending. They may be getting a discount or not. Ask the leasing agent anonymously the cost of a short term rental, then figure in furniture rental, utilities and such to get a closer estimate. Many of the Apartment Search Engines have 1 800 numbers to the leasing agent so you can get this info.

    Always have a 8 X 11 paper pad and calculator when talking to the recruiter to write out the entire package with options and make quick calculations. This will enable you to go over the deal after talking with the recruiter and analyze the info more and maybe do further research before calling back again and continue negotiating.

    Please inform other recruiters you have been talking to or communicating with if you decide on another assignment as professional courtesy and for the fact they may have a deal for you later in your career. Avoid alienating future opportunities although it may be inevitable at times. Send an email out informing recruiters who you’ve been communicating with that you have taken an assignment and when your next availability date is and thank them for their time once the deal is finalized.

    How much do surgical nurses make #nurses, #rn, #lpn, #nurse #practitioners,



    Uh-oh. You woke up with a burning sore throat, and your mom says you need to go have it checked. But before the doctor even makes you say aaahhh, there’s probably someone else you’ll see first: the nurse.

    Nurses are important people. Not only are they often the first health care professional that a sick or injured person sees, but they do their job in all kinds of settings from local hospitals to faraway military bases.

    Some even work in the sky or at sea, helping to transport sick people on planes or caring for passengers on ships. In fact, anywhere in the world you can find someone who needs health care, you can probably find a nurse.

    Where Do Nurses Work?

    Where are you most likely to meet a nurse?

    At your doctor’s office. Nurses in medical offices typically assist the doctor by asking you about your symptoms, taking your temperature and blood pressure, checking your weight, giving shots, and collecting blood or urine samples for lab tests.

    Doctor’s office nurses can teach patients about their medical problems and how to take care of themselves.

    You’ll also find nurses:

    • At your school: School nurses certainly see their share of kids with stomachaches, chickenpox, nosebleeds, and bumps and bruises. But they also have the important job of promoting good health. How do they do it? School nurses do vision, hearing, and scoliosis screenings and teach kids how to take care of themselves through good nutrition, exercise, and hygiene. They also help kids with special conditions, like diabetes, by teaching them about their condition and monitoring them.
    • At the hospital: Hospital nurses provide round-the-clock patient care. They monitor a patient’s vital signs like temperature and blood pressure, give medicine, draw blood, insert IVs, and work closely with doctors and families to keep everyone up to date on a patient’s condition. Some nurses even work in the operating rooms alongside the doctors.
    • In your neighborhood: Some nurses work directly in the community. These nurses teach people with special health problems like diabetes or asthma how to manage their conditions. They also might travel to a person’s home to provide care for those who are too elderly or sick to leave.

    Whatever type of work they do, the best nurses have one thing in common: they love interacting with people. That’s because nurses do more than provide hands-on health care. They also give patients and their families compassionate support at a time when they need it most. Nurses are educated to care for the whole person, not just treat whatever health issue somebody has.

    How Does Someone Become a Nurse?

    It’s easy to think all nurses are pretty much the same, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. There are actually dozens of different types of nurses, each with its own level of training. Basically, the more formal education a nurse has, the more responsibilities he or she can take on.

    People who want to become nurses have to decide which path is right for them. Some people know early on that they want to be a nurse. They might volunteer in hospitals when they are in high school and then go on to college to get a nursing degree. Others become nurses later in life, switching careers because they want to do something more rewarding and make a difference in people’s lives.

    Whichever way people come to nursing, here are some of the paths they can take:

    Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN): A licensed practical nurse provides basic care to patients under the supervision of a registered nurse. Things an LPN might do include helping a patient bathe and dress, administering certain types of medications, changing wound dressings, and taking vital signs. An LPN has at least 1 year of training in providing this kind of care.

    Registered Nurse (RN): Registered nurses give medication, perform basic procedures, and work closely with doctors to monitor a patient’s condition. All RNs have a degree from a 2- to 4-year nursing program. They study subjects like chemistry, biology, anatomy, and psychology, and they also get lots of hands-on practice called “clinical training.” RNs are the most common type of nurse and most RNs have a bachelor’s degree.

    Registered nurses need a nursing license. To get a license, a nurse must successfully complete a nursing program and pass a test called a licensing examination. To keep that license, a registered nurse must continue to take classes every few years to make sure his or her skills are up to date.

    RNs also need additional training if they want to “specialize” that is, focus their care on one type of patient, such as newborn babies or the elderly. Registered nurses also can become certified in a certain area of expertise, such as emergency or intensive care.

    Advanced Practice Nurses (APN): Advanced practice nurses are registered nurses who have gone on to get further training, including a master’s degree. There are many types of APNs, including a certified nurse midwife (who is trained to deliver babies), certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA, who specializes in giving and monitoring anesthesia), and a nurse practitioner (NP).

    A nurse practitioner is a type of advanced practice nurse with training in a specific area, such as pediatrics. An NP often is the one who takes a medical history, does an initial physical exam, writes prescriptions, and treats illnesses and injuries. In fact, you may see an NP instead of a doctor at some of your office visits.

    Nursing Today

    If you’ve ever seen an old movie with nurses in it, you’ve probably noticed that nurses used to look a lot different from how they look now. They wore white dresses, white shoes, and a crisp white hat. And they were all women.

    A lot has certainly changed in the last 40 years. Today you’re more likely to find nurses wearing comfortable scrubs with clogs or sneakers, and you’re also more likely to find that many are men. In fact, the number of men in the profession has been steadily rising.

    Still, with people living longer and needing more health care, there are simply not enough nurses to go around. Some experts estimate that by the year 2020, there will be a shortage of 1 million nurses and that translates to a lot of sick people who may not get the care they need.

    Will you help fill that gap? Maybe so. Nursing takes a lot of hard work and dedication, but most nurses say there’s no other career they’d rather have.

    How do I become a Travel Nurse with Medical Solutions?

    Simply fill out the application in our Apply section. You can also call us at 1.866.633.3548 and speak with a personal Career Consultant. They can answer your questions and send you an information packet.

    Am I obligated to travel with Medical Solutions if I fill out an application?

    No. You are never obligated to travel with Medical Solutions regardless if you have submitted your application or not. Your information is always kept confidential and we must get your permission before submitting your resume to a Client. This gives you a chance to explore your options and choose the best assignment.

    What is the process to become a Travel Nurse?

    Our process is simple. All we need to begin is your application and resume. Once we receive your information we can begin discussing potential assignments that fit your profile. Again, you are under no obligation to travel with Medical Solutions just because you submitted your information to us. Your personal Career Consultant will send you an information packet that contains a simple checklist outlining the documents you will need to become a Travel Nurse or Travel Allied Health Professional. Many of these documents and the checklist can be downloaded from our website under Resources.

    Is there a fee to become a Travel Nurse for Medical Solutions?

    Absolutely not. We re paid by the hospital. If you choose to travel with Medical Solutions, you will become our employee and we pay you.

    How much is my pay?

    Your total compensation package, including your hourly pay, is completely customized to fit your needs. Pay rates vary from assignment to assignment depending on location and the hospital.

    How often will I be paid?

    You are paid weekly by direct deposit. Most Travelers have their paycheck directly deposited in their primary bank to eliminate the hassle of finding a new bank for each assignment.

    What is a Personalized Pay Package?

    It simply means we have the flexibility to compensate you in a number of different ways! Most Traveling Nurse and Allied Health companies have cookie-cutter programs and a take it or leave it attitude. With Medical Solutions, we find out what s most important to you: hourly pay, stipends, bonuses, per diem, etc. We ll take the time to understand your needs, put a package together outlining each item, and clearly explain your total compensation.

    What about housing?

    With Medical Solutions, your housing is paid, private, and fully furnished! Unlike some companies, you are not required to share housing. Our housing coordinators will find you the best housing available, focusing on drive time, safety, and security. We handle all the arrangements for you, including furnishings and utilities. All you need to do is show up. Of course, if you prefer to pick something on your own or stay with friends or family, you will be offered a housing stipend.

    What is Per Diem?

    Per diem allowances and reimbursements are typically tax-free dollars allotted to you for traveling away from your primary residence. It is designed to cover the expense of your meals, transportation, and many costs associated with traveling.

    Do you offer a 401(k)?

    Yes, we offer a plan through Wells Fargo Institutional Retirement and Trust with auto enrollment after your first 30 days of work and an employer match of 50% of your contribution up to 3%. Ask your Career Consultant for more information.

    Do you offer travel reimbursements?

    Yes, Medical Solutions will provide you a travel stipend reimbursement to assist you with any of the costs you incur traveling to and from your assignment. Half of this stipend is provided in your first paycheck while the remainder is provided at the end of your assignment.

    What Travel Nursing and Travel Allied Health assignments are available?

    Medical Solutions has open travel assignments across the country for most specialties and shifts. We receive and fill new assignments every day. Just tell us where you want to travel and we ll present open assignments or find one for you. Additionally, you can search current opportunities on the Job Search page.

    How long does it take to get an assignment?

    Once you have interviewed for the position and both you and the facility decide to move forward, it typically takes one to six weeks, depending on when you are available and the start date of the assignment. We typically begin presenting new assignments to you about 30 days from the end of your current assignment.

    What about state licensing?

    Your personal Career Consultant can tell you exactly how much time is necessary to apply for a state license and the cost. Of course, if a temporary license is required, Medical Solutions will reimburse you for the cost.

    What happens after my Travel Nursing assignment is over?

    Before your assignment is over, your personal Career Consultant will begin discussing new Travel Nursing assignments with you. However, it is completely your choice to extend your assignment (if an extension is offered), take another assignment, go full time, or simply take a break.     What is the Talking About Cancer online course?

    This online course draws on some of the core principles of our Talk Cancer training workshops, giving learners an introduction to having simple, effective conversations about cancer and health.     What Does a Cardiac Cath Lab Nurse Do?

    Cardiac catheterization, or heart cath, is the insertion of a catheter into a heart chamber or vessel. Catherization can be used as a diagnostic tool to investigate possible cardiac conditions or used as a form of treatment. A specialized subset of cardiac catheterization is coronary catheterization, which involves catheterizing coronary arteries. From angioplasties, valvuloplasties, to stent placements, catheterization procedures take place in state of the art labs. During a catheterization procedure, the catheter, or thin, flexible tube, is inserted into a vein in the patient s leg or arm then moved into the arteries or heart. Cardiac cath lab nurses can also assist physicians in implanting pacemakers and implantable cardioverter-defibillators (ICDs). They must be good with technology and able to learn quickly. The majority of cardiac cath lab nurses work in hospitals and clinics, generally stationed in intensive care units and cardiovascular catheterization labs if they re available.

    How Can I Become a Cardiac Cath Lab Nurse?

    Cardiac cath lab nurses are registered nurses with a certification or advanced level experience in this discipline. Obviously cardiac cath lab nurses should also possess a high level of understanding and training in cardiac anatomy and physiology. Upon receiving a degree and license as a registered nurse and working for a specific period of time, those interested can participate in a hospital run cardiac cath lab training program if they re available, then apply for a voluntary certification exam. The training program consists of classroom study as well as several hundred hours of supervised nursing experience in an actual cath lab. During this training the nurse will learn the differences between cardiac conditions and how to treat them. The length of these programs may vary by hospital or state, but generally can last up to six months. Be sure to only participate in certification exams that are approved of by your hospital, state or national certification board. Should a hospital led training program not be available, many registered nurses spend one to two years in the emergency room, intensive care unit or coronary care unit before they enter the cardiac cath lab.

    Nurse training coursesThis open enrollment training program for nurse assistants meets requirements of the Missouri Omnibus Nursing Act. The course exceeds the required 75 hours of classroom instruction and 100 hours of supervised on-the-job training. Class meets twice a week for 20 sessions; each four hours in length.     I. What They Do

    The National Association of Neonatal Nurses (NANN ) describes this field of nursing as one focused on the treatment of infants born prematurely, born with congenital defects, and those experiencing critical complications during the first month of life. Such nurses are typically found in the specialized neonatal intensive care units (NICU) of hospitals. Their patients require continuous monitoring and treatment of serious, often life-threatening, conditions. According to NANN, each year approximately 40,000 infants are born in the United States needing specialized care.

    NICU Nurses complete additional training beyond what is required to be licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN), and may choose to pursue RNC-NIC certification.

    Daily Responsibilities

    • Collaborate with other medical professionals as part of an NICU team
    • Provide comfort and support to newborns
    • Educate patients’ mothers and other family members about newborn care
    • Administer treatment and medication as prescribed by a physician
    • Use advanced equipment and technological monitoring devices

    III. How to Become One

    Registered Nurses can earn their license after completing either an associate or bachelor’s program, although employers hiring for neonatal intensive care positions may prefer applicants with a Bachelors of Science in Nursing, as well as relevant experience working with critically ill infants.

    Education Requirements

    Registered Nurses are eligible for RNC-NIC certification. Each state’s board of nursing determines the requirements for RN licensure, which usually include an associate or bachelor’s degree in nursing from an accredited institution.

    Programs should have received accreditation from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) and/or the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN). Nurses then must go on to pass the National Council Licensure Exam for Registered Nurses (NCLEX ) in order to be awarded their license.

    Certification and Licensing Requirements

    Certification is not required to work in NICU settings, however many nurses in these environments choose to obtain RNC-NIC training and credentials offered through the National Certification Corporation (NCC).

    The NCC lists the following requirements to take the RNC-NIC exam:

    • Current RN license in the United States or Canada
    • One of the following:
      • At least 24 months experience working with critically ill infants as an RN
      • A minimum of 2,000 hours of specialty experience in neonatal health that includes direct patient care, education, administration or research
    • Employment related to the neonatal specialty within the past 24 months

    RNC-NIC Recertification Requirements

    • $100 NCC maintenance fee
    • Continuing education hours

    RNC-NIC certification is awarded for three years, and must be maintained through continuing education. The number of hours required varies, ranging from 10 to 45. Opportunities are offered through multiple sources, including the National Association of Neonatal Nurses. which provides education in four competency areas:

The history of simulation-based learning at SMU began with the pioneering work of the nurse anesthesia faculty in the late 1990s. Over the past decade our students have contributed a great deal to the national reputation of innovation and excellence that our simulation center – and especially our Program of Nurse Anesthesia – has garnered and sustained.     Our Philosophy of Learning and Success

    It is the intent of our entry-level program to prepare graduates for the full scope of practice in nurse anesthesia in order that they be competitive in the marketplace by delivering the highest possible quality of care. Consequently, students will be involved in all aspects of anesthesia including general and regional techniques as well as cases involving conscious sedation and other ancillary services such as pain management, anesthesia for interventional radiology procedures and emergency airway management. Under close and immediate supervision, students will be responsible for the administration and management of virtually all specialty surgery categories and common invasive monitoring modalities for the full range of patient age and acuity levels.

    At Samuel Merritt University, we manage the learning process as a shared enterprise between students and faculty; that is, we expect students to be highly motivated, responsible, self disciplined, focused and well schooled in the philosophy of graduate education. Faculty will consistently and expertly provide required learning opportunities and the guidance and instruction to fulfill the learning objectives of not only the program, but the student’s personal interests and talents. Above all, we seek mature students who represent the highest caliber critical care nurse; ones who take full responsibility for delivering exceptional, intelligent and compassionate care.

    How Our Graduates are Performing

    Employers continue to rave about the preparation of our students. Most often they cite the comprehensiveness of their theoretical background and the range of their clinical expertise from the simplest to the most medically complex patient. 100% of employers noted that graduates were fully capable of independent decision-making and graduates rank their preparation far above minimum competency levels. Nearly 90% of our graduates are employed in the Bay Area and most at Kaiser Permanente facilities. We also have graduates practicing in other areas of the country and in the military. We are proud of our graduates! 100% of the graduates from the Class of 2014 and 96% from the Class of 2015 were employed as CRNAs within 6 months of passing the National Certication Exam (NCE). The first-time pass rate for the Class of 2015 was 100% compared to the national average of 85%. The first-time pass rate for our last 5 cohorts (Classes of 2011-2015) was 94.4% compared to the national 5-year average of 87.6%.

    What is most important is that all of our graduates are employed as Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists. The graduates themselves all reported that they were well prepared to enter the employment field as CRNAs and felt fully competent to assume their professional role.     Established in 1993, our Program of Nurse Anesthesia (PNA) continues to be recognized as one of the premier educational programs in the country, producing top notch Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists. All PNA outcome measures of curricular quality and student satisfaction are consistently the highest across all programs at Samuel Merritt University. The university’s state-of-the-art Health Sciences Simulation Center was funded and built in 2006 largely predicated upon the successes experienced by the PNA in simulation-based education.     An ICU nurse has the responsibility to handle patients with life-threatening illnesses. His or her job consists of working in intensive care units and emergency departments at healthcare facilities. These individuals insure the proper care of patients and their families.

    Critical care nurses are the advocate for ill patient and the family members. They provide specialized experience, knowledge, and skills that their patients need. They may have to work in environments where patients receive intense interventions and therapies, and complex assessments, and they must offer humane care for their patients.

    The responsibilities of a critical care nurse may include:

    The average nursing salary for an ICU nurse is $68,111 annually. Areas of the country in which an ICU nurse can make higher wages are Phoenix, San Francisco, Tampa, and Washington D.C. An ICU nurse can make a salary range of $74,089 to $109,113 annually. The high demand for certified nurses can increase the annually salary significantly, depending on the location, education, experience, and facility.

    The VA Travel Nurse Corps Program (TNC) is a VA operated internal pool of Registered Nurses available for temporary short term assignments at VA Medical Centers throughout the country.     Georgia Perimeter College has partnered with Georgia Southwestern State University to offer the state s first three–year accelerated bachelor s degree in Georgia. This program is offered fully online and offers students two degree options in management or accounting. Along with the many duties associated with nursing, individuals employed in this occupation must also travel from location to location, including patients’ homes. Some traveling nurses move between hospitals, clinics and schools. Education prerequisites for this job vary, though a basic requirement is a nursing license. Voluntary certifications are also available.

    Job Duties for Traveling Nurses

    Traveling nurses have a wide array of duties to perform, such as administering medication and preparing nutritionally-specific meals. Many nurses who travel to different locations also teach family members and caretakers about proper patient and medical care. Additional responsibilities for traveling nurses might include follow-up procedures after surgery or administering physical therapy.

    Traveling Nurse Responsibilities

    Caring for patients who cannot leave their homes, traveling nurses administer medical care and monitor patients’ needs. Some school districts employ traveling nurses as a cost-cutting measure to administer medication to specific students. A traveling nurse can work independently, or for a health services organization.

    Requirements for Traveling Nurses

    According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the education requirements vary for individuals employed as traveling nurses (www.bls.gov ). Most employers prefer to hire candidates who are licensed practical (LPN) or registered nurses (RN). An LPN must have a high school diploma and a certificate from a nursing training program that has been approved by an official government agency. To become an RN, individuals will have to earn a diploma, associate’s or bachelor’s degree in nursing. A limited number of practicing traveling nurses will have graduate education in physical rehabilitation or gerontology.

    Various local jurisdictions and employers have different certification and licensure standards for traveling nurses. To complete certification as an LPN or RN, candidates must demonstrate professional competency through an examination process, known as the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX). Certification for nurses is administered by state agencies responsible for governing health occupations.

    Additional professional certification for home healthcare workers (who aren’t necessarily nurses) is offered by the National Association for Home Care and Hospice (NAHC), which requires membership fees and an entrance test. The NAHC also require candidates to finish 75 hours of specialized coursework focusing on home healthcare.

    Salary Information and Career Outlook

    The BLS projects that the field of registered nurses will increase by 19% between 2012 and 2022, while the employment of licensed practical and vocational nurses will increase by 25% during the same decade. The BLS also reported that the median annual salary for registered nurses was $66,220 in May 2013; the same year, licensed practical and vocational nurses earned a median of $41,920 a year.

Depending on the time you want to spend and the career mobility you plan on achieving, the different degrees are really up to you. To become a travel nurse specifically, most nursing placement agencies require at least one to two years of RN nursing experience. Applying to a nursing agency is perhaps one of the most difficult parts of becoming a nurse, as it requires lots of paperwork. However, once the work is completed, your files will usually transfer from one agency to another without any problem.

    A travel nurse s career outlook is great according to PayScale.com. The average hourly wage for a travel nurse ranges from about thirty to forty dollars an hour. What s more, travel nurses can often have their agencies pay for their utilities, housing, and other personal costs associated with constant moving. Because there is a severe shortage of nurses across the country, the demand for travel nurses is quite high, which means that agencies are now competing heavily in terms of recruitment. With more competition, the wages and benefits of travel nurses will continue to escalate. Of course, as with physicians salaries, wages vary heavily by location. California is one state with higher wages and a large demand for traveling nurses. Metropolitan areas like New York City and Chicago are also well-paying.     Special Program Requirements

    • Upon admission to the College, complete a criminal background check.
    • Complete a five panel non-chain of custody urine drug screen.
    • Purchase professional liability coverage through the University. Fees for this coverage are included in the fees paid at the time of registration at the beginning of each academic year.
    • Meet Texas Department of State Health Services immunization requirements for students involved with direct patient contact. Students who are not in compliance with these requirements will not be allowed to attend clinical laboratories. These requirements, as stated in the Texas Administrative Code, Title 25, Part 1, Chapter 97, Subchapter B, Rule 97.64 include the following:

    a)Students may be provisionally enrolled for up to one semester to allow students to attend classes while obtaining the required vaccines and acceptable evidence of vaccination.

    b)Students cannot be provisionally enrolled without at least one dose of measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine if direct patient contact will occur during the provisional enrollment period.

    c)Polio vaccine is not required. Students enrolled in health-related courses are encouraged to ascertain that they are immune to poliomyelitis.

    d)One dose of tetanus-diphtheria toxoid (Td) is required within the last ten years.

    e)Students who were born on or after January 1, 1957, must show, prior to patient contact, acceptable evidence of vaccination of two doses of measles-containing vaccine administered since January 1, 1968.

    f)Students must show, prior to patient contact, acceptable evidence of vaccination of one dose of rubella vaccine.

    g)Students born on or after January 1, 1957, must show, prior to patient contact, acceptable evidence of vaccination of one dose of mumps vaccine.

    h)Students shall receive a complete series of hepatitis B vaccine prior to the start of direct patient care or show serologic confirmation of immunity to hepatitis B virus.

    i)Students shall receive two doses of varicella vaccine unless the first dose was received prior to thirteen years of age.

    • Complete of a series of hepatitis A vaccine or serologic confirmation of immunity to hepatitis A virus before enrollment in courses with clinical laboratory experiences.
    • Provide results of tuberculosis screening annually.
    • Hold a Current American Heart Association CPR Type C certification.

    NURS 5746 Integrated Clinical

    (7 credit hours/ 270 clinical laboratory hours)

    Half of each new FNP cohort will be placed on a modified sequence at the end of their first fall semester to ensure that we can admit as many student as possible. These students will begin major clinical courses earlier than outlined in the above sequence. These students will receive an updated degree plan when they are assigned to the modified sequence.

    Students are responsible for identifying and selecting preceptors for clinical experiences. The clinical instructor for each course must approve the clinical site selected by the student. The CONHS will make every effort to support the students in the communities where they reside but occasionally students are required to travel when appropriate sites are not available.     Transfer Coursework:
    The CONHS Graduate Department may accept up to 12 graduate hours for transfer provided that the coursework:

    1. Is from an accredited University
    2. has a letter grade of B or better (no CR/NC or Pass/ No Pass)
    3. has been completed in less than 7 years from the time of graduation in the TAMUCC program
    4. has not been used on a conferred master’s degree at another institution

    Please correspond with CONHS Graduate Academic Advisor to determine transfer credit. The courses must be evaluated for possible transfer equivalency, so transcripts, course descriptions, and syllabi are essential to determine possible transfer credit. These need to be sent to the CONHS Graduate Advisor for consideration.

    LPN and LVN Training Programs

    Entry-level training for licensed practical nurses and licensed vocational nurses can be obtained via 1-year educational programs offered at technical schools, vocational schools or community colleges.     Associate’s Degree in Nursing

    Career Requirements to Become a Nurse

    All nurses have to earn state licensure after they graduate from an educational program. Part of earning licensure is taking the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN).     Both the NCLEX-RN and the NCLEX-PN include questions about keeping patients and nurses safe by preventing accidents, using ergonomic principles, and correctly handling infectious items according to the NCSBN. Students answer questions about supporting culturally diverse patients in stressful situations, such as abuse, loss, mental illness or chemical dependency. Exam takers must know how to keep patients comfortable, identify appropriate use of medications, calculate doses and recognize adverse effects.


    Certification is a way that nurses can show their ability to care for certain groups of people, such as children, the elderly or patients with mental illness. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), though these credentials are earned voluntarily, some employers may insist that the nurses they hire have additional certifications.

    Professional organizations, such as the American Nursing Credentialing Center (ANCC), offer a wide array of certifications in diverse specialty areas, including pediatrics, psychiatric care and diabetes management. Another professional organization, the National League for Nursing, offers certification for nurse educators. Additional education may be required for some certifications.

    Advanced Practice Nurse Certification

    After earning degrees and obtaining RN licensing, nurse practitioners and other advanced practice nurses may need to undergo an additional process of certification, determined by the state in which they work. Certification allows an advanced practice nurse to perform specific care, depending on the state’s regulations. For example, certified nurse practitioners may be able to prescribe medications (which needs additional licensure), or serve as a patient’s primary health care provider.

    Salary and Career Outlook

    The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) estimated that from 2014 – 2024, job opportunities for both RNs and LPNs/LVNs were expected to grow 16% — a good deal faster than average across all occupations. The BLS also reported in May 2015 that the average annual salary for RNs was $67,490; while LPNs/LVNs earned an average annual wage of $43,170 during that same reporting interval.

    All nurses, whether LPNs/LVNs or RNs, must complete an approved nursing education program and pass a National Council Licensure Examination. Since nurses need different training for different work settings, prospective nurses should consider their career goals and workplace preferences when deciding on a nursing program.

Is there a school near or around Wayne County that has a program that does not require me to take extra classes that have nothing to do with becoming a CNA and that also provides the certification exam? Not that I’m trying to complain. I don’t want to go to a school that once you’re done they don’t inform you of the exam or what else there is for you to do in order to help one out.

You have to contact the schools and ask if they also administer the CNA test although you may find that this is actually rare. I think that once you contact them they will provide all the answers you need. In fact I don’t think there are many schools which require you to take more than the minimum required number of training hours for your state. So please don’t hesitate to call them and ask about the exam, certification, etc. After all you are the one paying and they will most likely want to have you as a student.
