For as long as I can remember, the standard welcome bonus for a rewards credit card has been a free flight. Yet the truth is that these award flights are no longer free. Between reduced award availability and increased taxes and fees, this benefit has steadily become less valuable. Nevertheless, there is one credit card perk that, while not free, is actually gaining in value. The offer of a companion ticket a free or discounted ticket for someone traveling with you on the same flight will always be worth more as airline ticket prices rise. At the same time, it is important to note that all companion tickets are not created equal. Let’s take a look at the top credit cards that feature an airline companion ticket offer. (See also: The Best Travel Rewards Cards)

Southwest Rapid Rewards Premier Credit Card

The Southwest Rapid Rewards Premier Credit Card does not offer companion passes directly; it just makes it faster to earn one. First, new cardholders can earn 40,000 Rapid Rewards points after you spend $1,000 in purchases in the first 3 months of opening your account. Also get 6,000 points after your Cardmember Anniversary. These points count toward the 110,000 points necessary to earn a companion pass that is valid until the end of the following year.

Unlike other passes that are only good for one ticket, once this Southwest pass is earned, travelers can use it for unlimited free travel for a companion on both paid and award flights. So if you buy a flight for yourself, or redeem points for an award, your companion flies free. Therefore, the value of this pass is limited only by the amount of traveling you do. There is a $99 annual fee.

Bonus offer: Earn 40,000 points if you spend $1,000 on purchases within the first 3 months of opening the account.

British Airways Visa Signature Card

The British Airways Visa Signature Card offers a big bonus of 50,000 Avios after you make $3,000 in purchases within the first 3 months of account opening. If you spend a total of $10,000 on purchases within your first year, you earn another 25,000 bonus Avios, for a total of 75,000 bonus Avios. You also have the opportunity to earn a free Travel Together ticket when you spend $30,000 in purchases on their British Airways Visa card within a calendar year. When booking an award flight operated by British Airways, the Travel Together ticket can be redeemed for a second seat for no additional points and is good for two years. Unfortunately, the second person will have to pay additional taxes and fuel surcharges. Since these charges can equal the cost of a coach ticket, using this companion certificate only makes sense when flying in business or first class. Cardholders also earn 3 Avios for every dollar spent on British Airways purchases and 1 Avios on other purchases. There are no foreign transaction fees and the annual fee is $95.

Bonus offer: Earn 50,000 Avios after you make $3,000 in purchases within the first 3 months, with the opportunity to earn more after meeting spending requirements.

Miles More World Elite MasterCard

Barclaycard’s Miles More World Elite Mastercard offers an annual companion ticket after the first purchase, and each year after that. Cardholders earn two miles per $1 spent on airline partner tickets, and one mile per $1 spent on other purchases. Miles can be redeemed for flight awards and upgrades on Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, SWISS and other partners. There are no foreign transaction fees. There is an annual fee of $89.

Bonus offer: Earn 20,000 bonus miles when you make your first purchase and pay the annual fee. Then, earn an additional 30,000 award miles after you make $5,000 in purchases in the first 90 days.

Alaska Airlines Visa Signature Card

Cardholders receive an annual coach Companion Fare from $121. The pass can be used on any paid flight in coach. Cardholders also earn 3 miles for every $1 spent on Alaska Airlines tickets and Vacation Packages, as well as inflight purchases, and 1 mile for every $1 spent on other purchases. There is no mileage cap and miles won’t expire. Plus, the first checked bag is free for you and up to six passengers on your reservation. There is a $75 annual fee.

Bonus offer: Earn 30,000 miles after spending $1,000 on purchases within the first 90 days. Also, buy one ticket and get a ticket for just taxes and fees with Alaska s Famous Companion Fare after you make $1,000 or more in purchases within the first 90 days of your account opening.

CitiBusiness / AAdvantage Platinum Select World Mastercard

Best price on airline ticketsBest price on airline ticketsIf you’re a small business owner, you’ll want to consider the CitiBusiness / AAdvantage Platinum Select World Mastercard from our partner Citi, which gives you an American Airlines Companion Certificate each year when you spend $30,000 and renew your cardmembership. In terms of rewards, this card offers 2x miles for every dollar spent on American Airlines as well as 2x miles on purchases at telecommunications, car rental merchants and at gas stations. Travel perks include free first checked bag for you and up to 4 companions on the same reservation on domestic American Airlines itineraries, priority boarding, and a 25% discount on eligible in-flight purchases.

Limited time offer: For a limited time, earn 60,000 American Airlines AAdvantage bonus miles after making $3,000 in purchases within the first 3 months of account opening.

Applying for a credit card with a companion ticket offers can be a great way to slash your travel costs nearly in half. By focusing on the best offers out there, and dismissing the ones of questionable value, you can ensure that you will not be disappointed when it comes time to book that half price vacation with your favorite travel companion.

The information related to the British Airways Visa Signature Card and the Southwest Rapid Rewards Premier credit card has been collected by Wise Bread and has not been reviewed or provided by the issuer of this card.

Rent a Car Dubai, Car Rental, Hire – Lease in Dubai

Rent a Car in Dubai | Cheap Car Rental, Hire and Car Lease Offers in Dubai, UAE

The omnipresence of smart phones, sparring between the airlines and online travel agencies, the push to lower car rental costs and potential car lease company consolidations are all driving change in the world of travel reservations for big players like thrifty rent a car and Dollar rent a car. Rental Cars UAE provides search results from best car rental companies like Thrifty Rent a Car in Dubai, UAE and Dollar Rent a Car in Dubai, UAE without any sign-up cost for Car Leasing. We can show customers all the brands like Hyundai, Toyota, Mazda, BMW, Audi, Mercedes, Nissan, Mini, Jeep Wrangler, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, Mazda 3, Kia Picanto, Toyota Fortuner and Nissan Patrol. The website covers all locations across the UAE with many rent a car in Dubai and car rental Dubai companies.Unlike the other car rental portals, we give certain choices when selecting a vehicle that customers will not find with many car hire companies in Dubai. If there is a specific car that a company would like to rent, they can specify that upfront and our agents will work to rent it out through long term rent a car.

We allow our partner rent a car and car lease companies to choose their pickup and drop-off locations, and vehicle and transmission type to get started. They can focus their search even more by sorting the price or car class. Rental Cars also runs special rent a car and car hire deals, which means customers will not find out exactly what car leasing company they are booking with until they have completed the transaction.

They are still able to see what kind of vehicle they are getting and how much room it has, though, they know what they are getting before they confirm a booking. This type of deal is commonly offered for hotels but it is much less common to see them with Dubai rental cars, which makes Rental Cars UAE service even more valuable for Car Hire Dubai.

Rental Cars UAE earns a place on the list of the best car rental sites because we give you more choices than other Car Lease Dubai companies in the industry. In addition to choosing where and when customers want to pick up and drop off, they can also limit results to a specific company.

Then, they are presented with a table listing of the available cars in the city or airport that they have selected as well as the rates for each car class that are offered. There is also the option to view results by price, which is the smart way to go if customers are working with a limited budget and looking for 12 to 36 months booking.

Customers can choose to add rental car insurance and include flight information if they are picking car up at the airport. Travelers who need special equipment like a GPS device or a child safety seat can make these requests directly with the car rental company. Then, all you should do is deliver the car and renew the contract every month which is a win situation for bother car rent company and customer

7 Best Websites for Last-Minute Airfare Deals, best deals on airfare.#Best

7 Best Websites for Last-Minute Airfare Deals

    Best deals on airfare

Pricey flights are the bane of every traveler’s existence. But once you become a frequent traveler, you pick up a few flight booking tips that’ll save you tons of cash.

But if you have the type of schedule that just won’t allow you to plan ahead a few months, you might be in for sticker shock. In that case, it’s smart to find the best sites for last-minute airfare. If you’re flexible on where you travel, you can scoop up some amazing deals all over the globe. And even if you’re not flexible, you may be able to whittle down the last-minute price tag tremendously. (See also: 20 Secrets of Last-Minute Travel)

    1. Hopper

Hopper is a mobile app that lets you search for flights, compare travel deals, and figure out the best time to fly. Search for your preferred flight dates using colored blocks. From there, you’ll get predictions on the exact dates your flights might be cheapest.

You’ll receive a notification to wait for a better fare if the app believes prices will drop, along with ongoing notifications when your fare hits the bottom. Or you’ll get a notification to buy because your airfare is the lowest it will go.

While Hopper can work great for fares in the future, it can also help you decide when to pull the trigger on a last-minute trip. At the very least, it can show you the cheapest day to fly within your preferred range of dates.

    2. Airfare Watchdog

Airfarewatchdog lets you save on last-minute travel in more ways than one. First, the website lists last-minute travel deals from your home airport or any airport of your choosing. If you’re flexible on where you travel, this tool makes it easy to see the best deals from your airport within the upcoming month.

Second, you can set up alerts to notify you when a last-minute airfare deal you’ve been looking for finally appears. Lastly, Airfare Watchdog offers tips on amazing airfare deals via social media daily. By following them on Facebook or Twitter, you can get the inside scoop on airfare deals all over the world.

    3. Secret Flying

Secret Flying is a resource that’s perfect for the last-minute traveler who has some flexibility in where they go. The site, which uses software to find unbelievable airfare deals across the globe, unleashes an array of last-minute flight deals nearly every day.

On any given morning, you could wake up to find you can fly round-trip to Paris next week for less than $400, or to Bali for a flat $350 in coach. The catch? Secret Flying deals usually last no longer than a few days, and you typically need to travel within a few weeks of booking.

    4. The Flight Deal

The Flight Deal is another site that rolls out unbelievable daily deals on airfare. On some mornings, you may find you can score a round-trip flight to New Zealand for $500. Another day, you might discover a crazy, cheap bucket-list trip to Maui or South Africa or Belize.

Of course, most of these crazy fares come with a catch, in that you generally need to book within 24 hours and travel within weeks. But they can be a huge boon to those who are flexible with destinations and dates.

The Flight Deal shares discounts on domestic trips, too. So if you’re only looking for a last-minute trip to Florida or Colorado, you’ll uncover deals on those destinations, too. You may just have to wait a while.

    5. Expedia

Expedia offers a several ways to spend less on airfare, including a last-minute travel deals page that shows cheap fares from your home airport. Destinations vary depending on the date and your departure hub, but they typically include cheap, last-minute flight deals to some domestic big city hubs along with top vacation spots like Hawaii and Cancun.

Expedia also offers a selection of flight and hotel packages that let you save on both. For example, as I’m writing this, they’re offering package deals to destinations like Playa del Carmen, Mexico, Las Vegas, Miami, and Los Angeles, starting at just $599 per person.

    6. Last Minute Travel

Last Minute Travel offers exactly what the name promises timely airfare deals on trips departing within the next few weeks. The downside here is that you need to join the site and purchase a membership to get the best deals. The upside is that they promise last-minute airfare deals worth up to 60 percent off.

Membership costs just $50 per year, and that gets you members-only rates on airfare, exclusive hotel deals, 24/7 assistance from travel experts, and a members-only rewards plan. If you don’t save at least the cost of the membership ($50), Last-Minute Travel will refund the cost in the form of a travel voucher.

If you don’t want to join, the site still offers competitive pricing on all of your travel needs, but especially on last-minute airfare and hotel deals.

    7. Orbitz

Orbitz is a travel aggregator that makes it easy to shop for last-minute flight deals and compare prices across airlines. Like Expedia, Orbitz also offers a page with daily and weekly travel deals. These discounts can apply to airfare, hotel bookings, and travel packages.

Occasionally, special deals with specific airlines are available. For example, you may find discounts on last-minute travel with American Airlines or Delta Air Lines one week and Air France the next. Generally speaking, any included deals on special airfare only apply to last-minute fares taking place within the next 30 days. But if you’re flexible, you can find round-trip airfare for less than $200 to select destinations within the U.S.

The Top 5 Secrets to Scoring Cheap Flights

If you like to travel and like to save money, this is the column for you.

I’m about to explain some of the elements involved in the complicated business of airfare pricing. It may sound dull, but it’s not; if anything, it’s kind of weird how the whole system works, but that’s the way it is.

And the more you know about this system, the easier it is for you to find cheap flights every time you shop.

    Best prices on airline ticketsPlay

Seems only fair. After all, the airlines go to extraordinary lengths to get you to pay more; they know all about your shopping habits, including when you want to travel and even where you want to go, and they price their fares accordingly.

So let’s level the playing field a bit, okay?

For more air travel news and insights visit Rick’s blog at: http://farecompare.com

Here are the five things you should know to score cheap flights:

    1. Very few seats are ever on sale — so speed is of the essence.

Did you know that on most planes, passengers pay ten different prices for their tickets? It’s true, and of course that means there are very few of the cheapest seats ever available –including those advertised in the airline’s advertised airfare sales.

Which means you have to grab the good deals the moment they are available. This is getting harder and harder, because everyone is an amateur travel agent these days, meaning you have tons of competition for those cheapest seats.

    The Best Airfare Deals

And speaking of jumping, that brings us to…

    2. Know the airline hurdles you have to clear.

To get the best of the ten different airfares on a plane, you have to follow the rules — or “hurdles,” as I call them — and the more hurdles you clear, the cheaper the fare.

One hurdle may be a Saturday night stay, which isn’t much of a problem for most vacationers (or leisure travelers), but most road warriors don’t like being away from home on the weekends, which is why they pay more for business travel.

Another hurdle is the 14-day advance purchase window; if you just have to get away right this minute, chances are you will pay for your impatience with higher fares. Note that some of the low-cost carriers such as JetBlue and AirTran usually make it a little easier, with only a seven-day advance-purchase requirement.

Yet another hurdle: the dreaded blackout dates. Most sales have them, and it usually means you can’t fly when you really want to, such as the dates surrounding holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas. If you want to save, you work around these dates (or fly around them).

    Best Days to Buy Airfare

    3. One day stands alone as the best day to shop.

If you’ve been reading my column for any length of time, you probably already know the answer to this, but if not, I won’t keep you dangling: the best day to shop for airfare is Tuesday. And let me get even more specific: shop on Tuesday at about 3 p.m.

Here’s why: usually, when an airline wants to launch a sale, it will do so late Monday. When the other airlines see this, they immediately go into competitive mode, and begin lowering their own prices to match the first one’s sale.

All the airlines that plan to join in on this “matching” will have completed the process by early Tuesday afternoon, so by 3 p.m., shoppers will have the most “good prices” to choose from.

Note: usually that original sale ends in just two or three days, and the matching fares of the other airlines will disappear by then as well, if not sooner. Remember, if all those sale prices disappear in a single day, that’s it, they are gone. The airline is not going to put up a fresh supply of cheap seats to meet the demand. It just doesn’t work that way.

    4. Certain days (and times) are cheaper to fly than others.

Look, the airlines know they can easily sell out all the seats on planes that go to popular destinations during the most popular days of the week to travel, so they’re not going to drop prices on those seats, are they? No, they are not.

But they would like to fill up the seats on the less popular days. Otherwise those seats are a total loss for them. Which is why you will find the best deals are available for flights on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Now, when it comes to the days everyone wants to fly — Fridays and Sundays — it figures that those are almost always the most expensive days to fly. Adjust your vacation schedule accordingly.

    Best Days to Fly

The best time of day to fly? Well, since no one wants to get up at the crack of dawn — you guessed it — that’s when to fly. And generally, the dinner hour is cheaper too. And always, the overnight flights.

    5. Today’s airfare shoppers need help to find the best deals.

This is one of the weird things about the airfare pricing system: sometimes, even if you follow all the rules, and clear all those hurdles, the airlines still might not give you the best price. Their thinking will run something like: “Maybe if we give this seat just another day or two out there in the marketplace, someone who wants it even more than you do will be willing to pay our current price. Let’s see if that happens.”

So, you could sit there chained to your computer, checking the prices minute by minute, waiting for a price drop — or you could sign up for an airfare alert. But be sure these are “real time” airfare alerts that let you know the instant prices change. The sooner you know about a deal, the better chance you have of actually snagging it.

Forget Aesop; his tortoise wouldn’t have a prayer of snagging a deal in today’s complicated game of airfare pricing. It’s you hares out there who will score — if you keep these tips in mind.

This work is the opinion of the columnist and does not reflect the opinion of ABC News.

    Learn More About Australia Tours

Cosmopolitan cities, gorgeous beaches, the rugged Outback and fascinating Aboriginal culture can all be experienced on Australia tours. Because Australia is so distant from North America, most Australia vacations are two weeks long, with some itineraries lasting a month. It makes perfect sense, though, since there is so much to see in this vast country. Typically you will fly between cities, to cover as much ground as you can in a limited amount of time.

Australia tours usually make overnight visits to the area around Alice Springs, so visitors can get a taste of the Outback. While this is a remote region in the center of the country, there are farmers and ranchers who make their homes out here. Also, this is where you find Uluru, formerly known as Ayers Rock. It is a sacred place for the Aboriginals, who were the first inhabitants of Australia.

Finally, Cairns is another important stop on any Australia vacation. That is because this northeast coastal town is the gateway to the awesome Great Barrier Reef. If you like to snorkel or scuba dive, you will want to don gear to admire the amazing array of marine life. Otherwise, you can board a glass-bottom boat to see the colorful fish. Other excursions here include a catamaran cruises or walks through the tropical rainforest.

New Obama admin regulations on Cuba to make travel easier to

    #travel cuba

Many Cubans welcome closer ties with U.S.

Washington (CNN) Americans will face fewer obstacles in traveling to Cuba under new regulations announced by the Obama administration on Thursday, continuing a promise to thaw relations with the country the President started last month.

While short of lifting the decades-old U.S. embargo on the island, a move that would require congressional approval, the administration’s new rules on travel and trade will likely herald a new era in ties between the two countries.

Under the softened regulations whose details were outlined in more detail Thursday, Americans will be able to visit Cuba without first seeking a license from the Treasury Department, so long as the travel meets certain criteria. The new regulations will take effect Friday, according to the U.S. Treasury.

President Barack Obama originally announced the change in U.S. policy on Cuba on Dec. 17, as part of a larger deal that secured the release of Alan Gross, an American government subcontractor who was imprisoned on the island for five years.

Cuban Americans traveling to see family members, American officials on government trips, journalists on assignment on the island as well as every day citizen visiting for educational, cultural, religious reasons will no longer need permission first.

The new regulations allow travel agents and airlines to book tickets for U.S. citizens to Cuba without a special license from the Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control known as OFAC.

Americans traveling to the island will also be allowed to use credit cards, a restriction that complicated trips to Cuba in the past.

“Today’s announcement takes us one step closer to replacing out of date policies that were not working and puts in place a policy that helps promote political and economic freedom for the Cuban people,” Treasury Secretary Jack Lew said in a statement.

In unveiling the new regulations, the Obama administration revealed it is moving to establish a U.S. embassy in Havana, allowing American officials to make purchases that will revamp U.S. diplomatic facilities that already exist in the Cuban capital.

Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker is slated to visit Cuba later this year.

“Today’s actions, which are being taken in coordination with the U.S. Department of the Treasury, give legal effect to the historic policy changes that President Obama announced,” Pritzker said in a statement.

The administration’s rules still present challenges for Americans traveling to Cuba. U.S. citzens will only be allowed to import up to $100 in alcohol and tobacco products, under the regulations, setting a limit on the number of Cuban cigars Americans will be permitted to bring home.

Chris Chiames, Orbitz’s vice president of corporate affairs, says the travel booking site expects to have flights to Cuba, as well as hotel options, available to consumers in 2015.

“We’re working through how to turn that on quickly. It’s not going to be tomorrow,” he said, adding U.S. citizens should expect “travel sometime in 2015.”

In the short term, Chiames said it’s unlikely travelers will be able to fly on U.S. carriers. The first step appears to be giving consumers the ability to book tickets on international carriers like Air Canada, Aeromexico. Travelers could fly from the U.S. to cities in Canada and Mexico, for example, and then make connections to Havana.

Chiames said U.S. carriers are still working through DOT to determine how quickly they will be able to offer service from American cities.

Republicans have blasted Obama’s move to thaw decades-old tensions with Cuba. Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Florida) said Thursday that the new policies will have the effect of “enriching a tyrant” without benefiting Cubans.

“This is a windfall for the Castro regime that will be used to fund its repression against Cubans, as well as its activities against U.S. national interests in Latin America and beyond,” he said. “Given existing U.S. laws about our Cuba policy, this slew of regulations leave at least one major question President Obama and his administration have failed to answer so far: what legal authority does he have to enrich the Castro regime in these ways?”

Europe on a Shoestring: Travel on a Budget

Budapest, Hungary at night. Photo by Greg Koszorus

Sitting in the backseat of a blue hatchback Saab, I look out onto the peaceful Danube River, which runs through the center of Budapest, Hungary. The bright lights of the Hungarian parliament light up the night sky, reflecting off the river. The historic bridges along the river are illuminated with lights, and I am amazed at the beauty of this city.

It is my first night in Europe, and I can already tell what an incredible trip this is going to be. We plan to visit Hungary, Austria, Italy, France and Germany. I can’t wait to experience the different cultures and witness the history of each place. Looking at my boyfriend, who is seated next to our Hungarian friend in the driver’s seat, I wonder how I got so lucky. How did I get all the way here from little Greeley, Colorado?

Well, by saving and planning, that’s how!

When my boyfriend first asked me to travel with him to Europe, I said yes without any hesitation, but in my head I was wondering how the heck I was going to pay for this on a student budget. After thinking about it, I decided I was going to make it happen.

The first thing I had to do was start saving. Every tiny paycheck I got, I would put a portion of it into savings. No more Starbucks, no more going out to eat and no more shopping. Sadly, Starbucks was the hardest thing to give up, but it was all worth it.

Travel in Austria was even easier using the Eurail Select Pass. Photo by Kirstin Graber

After doing my research, I learned that the best way to save money when traveling is to plan ahead. In my case, this was key when traveling to Europe because it is much cheaper to pay in dollars than in Euros. Constantly researching online for the best prices available also helped.

Buying a plane ticket from the US to Europe can be extremely expensive, but fortunately, travel websites like Priceline and Expedia made it possible. After saving and ticket hunting for a few months, I was finally able to afford my ticket to Budapest.

According to Yahoo Travel, one small thing to remember is that the cheapest days to buy a plane ticket is on a Tuesday or Wednesday afternoon and traveling on a weekday.

Next on the list was finding a place to stay in each country. Once again, the travel websites came in handy. We looked for accommodations in safe locations at an affordable price, and travel websites provide all the information you need. Even though you don’t know exactly what you are getting, that is just a part of the adventure.

Train travel is one of the cheapest ways to get around in Europe and can be the most fun. If you buy a Eurail train pass, you will save a good amount of money. We chose the Europe Select Pass, which allows you to travel a certain number of days within your chosen countries for one set price. Since my boyfriend and I were under age 26, we could purchase a discounted youth pass. It cost us US$ 451 each for eight days of train travel within Italy, Germany, Austria and Hungary.

When you do get to your destination, remember to set a budget for the trip and stay within the budget. Know the currency and always calculate how much you are spending in dollars. Often times, people think they are spending less than they really are.

With a little planning, it s possible to travel on a student budget in Italy. Photo by Greg Koszorus

Another important aspect of traveling is to know the little quirks about the country you are visiting. For example, in Italy, restaurants have a sit down price and a take out price. In Venice, we found Paninis for 3€ ($3.88). When we ordered, the man told us to sit and wait for the Paninis. When we went to pay, he charged us double the price.

When we asked why, he said it was because we sat down and ate in the restaurant. We could have saved 6€ ($7.77) if we had taken the order and stood outside. Knowing things like that is important, so you are aware of ways they may overcharge you.

Many students claim they don t want to travel because of how expensive it is, but I am proof it is possible. Your bank account may decrease dramatically, but the experience and knowledge you gain is worth it.

Just remember to plan ahead, save your money and stay within your budget. I have no regrets for going and cannot wait until I have saved up enough to go again.

The author and her boyfriend, Greg, during their budget travels in Europe.

Cheap Rental Cars on Costco Travel

Looking for cheap rental cars?  Are you a Costco member?

Then you should take a look at deals available on Costco Travel !

I always knew Costco Travel existed.  Never used it until a few months ago and it s fantastic!

A friend recommended that I give it a try to book cheap rental cars and I have been getting great rates, especially at airport locations, through Costco Travel Car Rentals.  It is usually at least a few dollars cheaper than Priceline.com and Orbitz.  Can t say no to cheap rental cars!

Besides cheap rental cars, Costco Travel also has vacation packages. cruises. theme parks specialty, and hotel offers.

If you have a Costco membership, you have free and immediate access to Costco Travel services!

    Exclusively for Costco Members

Costco Travel is only for Costco members who reside in the United States.

    Value and Quality You Expect

Enjoy the same quality, value, and experience you expect as a Costco member.  Similar to the items and products you find at a Costco Warehouse, the travel offerings from Costco Travel are carefully chosen and negotiated by Costco s travel experts.  Costco uses its buying power to get the best deals.  You benefit.

What appeals to me about Costco Travel is its transparent and upfront pricing.  What you see is what you pay.  No surprises.  No tricks.

For rental car bookings, you pay when you pick up your vehicle.  You can cancel your reservation anytime.  Cheap rental cars at Costco Travel come with no strings attached!

    Get Started Today!

You can click on Costco Travel  to reach the website or just type CostcoTravel.com into your browser.

On the main page, you can build your customized trip, view the current vacation packages available, or price a cruise, rental cars, theme park specialty trip, and hotel deals.

I always like to login first (top right) because there are some exclusive deals available when you login and verify you are a Costco customer.  There are discounts and exclusive offers/trips just for being an Executive member.

If this is the first time you are visiting Costco Travel, chances are that you will need to create a free Costco Travel Account first.

It is a simple and straightforward process.  All you need is your Costco membership number.

    Rental Cars

Costco Travel has excellent prices for rental cars, especially at airport locations.

The reservation page highlights the best prices in red from each vehicle class.  You can choose vehicles from Alamo, Avis, Budget, or Enterprise.  They are the rental car partners of Costco.

The price you see is what you pay.  All taxes and fees are included.  No surprises at the counter.

All rental cars booked on Costco Travel also include:

    • Unlimited mileage
    • Additional driver
      • According to Costco Travel, [t]he additional driver fee will be waived for a Costco member’s spouse, domestic partner, or a surrogate driver for a mobility-impaired renter, plus one (1) additional driver for Costco members at locations in the U.S. and Canada.

I have consistently found that rental cars booked on Costco Travel for airport locations are generally at least a few dollars cheaper than what can be found elsewhere, including Priceline.com and Orbitz.

The price you see on the page is what you pay when you pick up your vehicle.  No additional fees or taxes.  No frustration at the rental counter.

I have found the pickup process to be an ease as well.  The agents always find my reservation immediately with no problems and I am in the rental car within minutes.  You don t have to suffer to get cheap rental cars.

The order confirmation page also provides you with upgrade options.  You can also chat with a live agent while booking your reservation if you have any questions.

I think that the simple and straightforward search is really nice.

I always price shop at a few other travel sites such as Priceline.com and Orbitz.com, as well as Costco Travel, to see which one has what I am looking for.  Another wonderful thing about Costco Travel is the low price finder and the featured coupons :

The low price finder is neat because the query searches and scans all coupons, codes, and discounts available for your trip.

This offer even more incentives to consider Costco Travel on your next hunt for cheap rental cars.  Again, some of these deals might not be what you are looking for.  But at Fresh Money, we always do our due diligence to find the best deals for your money.

Give Costco Travel a try next time you are looking to book cheap rental cars.  See if it can offer a more competitive price to complement your future trip!

Note.  I am no affiliated with Costco or Costco Travel in any way.  Harvey Cares is your source for candid insight on a variety of topics.

    Last but not least

Have you used Costco Travel before?  Were you able to find cheap rental car?  Did you enjoy your experience?

Cheap Hotels in Italy. Compare prices on Discount Italy Hotels #travel

    #cheaphotels.com
    #

    Italy Hotels

Most internet-savvy consumers these days know that just checking the prices on one hotel website is not enough – you have to compare the prices on a few different websites to make sure you are getting a good deal. But clicking around to all those different sites can be a pain, especially to those of us who just don’t have time to waste. That’s why we’ve set up this excellent search tool for hotels in Italy – it lets you compare the prices from several different websites with just one click!

We’ve got hundreds upon hundreds of hotels in Italy listed here, from cities all over the country, so you don’t have to look far to get all your Italy hotels booked for your upcoming trip. It’s one-stop-shopping for hotels, and we’ve tried to make it as simple and useful as possible. Here’s how it works:

    1. Choose a city from the drop-down menu in the blue box above, and choose the dates you’d like to stay in a hotel in that city.
  • Click the “Search” button.
  • A small window comes up asking you to verify how many guests will be staying in the hotel, how many rooms you want to reserve, and – most importantly – which websites you want to check for cost comparison purposes. Check as many boxes as there are websites you want to look at, then click “Search Deals.”
  • A new window will open for each of the websites you checked off as wanting to look at, so you can easily click between each one to compare prices, all without losing your original place on the Italy Logue website.
  • When you find the hotel you want to book, you just continue on through the booking process for that website in its new window, and you’re done!
  • That’s all there is to it – this is definitely the easy way to check Italy hotels quickly and easily, and at the same time do the necessary research and cost comparisons.

Book Ryanair cheap flights from 8

Online check-in from 7d to 2h preceding departure.

    Ryanair

    Flying with Ryanair

Ryanair is an Irish, low cost airline. Its headquarters are located at the Dublin Airport in Fingal, Ireland. Ryanair is one of the largest low cost airlines in Europe along with easyJet. From its 50 bases and with a fleet of 300+ Boeing 737-800 aircrafts, it operates about 1,500 daily flights to over 175 destinations across nearly 30 countries. In 2012, the company carried 79 million passengers.

    Online check-in

All passengers must check in online and print out their boarding pass before arriving at the airport. Online check-in is available from 15 days up to 4 hours before the scheduled flight departure time.

Passengers that do not print their boarding pass at least 4 hours before flight departure must go to the Ryanair check-in counter at the airport at least 40 minutes before departure to collect their boarding pass. A boarding pass re-issue fee of £70 per ticket will be applied.

Ryanair airport check-in desks open 2 hours before the scheduled flight departure time and close 40 minutes before departure. The boarding gate closes 20 minutes before departure; any passengers arriving after this time will not be allowed to board.

    Checked baggage allowance

Ryanair does not have a free checked baggage allowance. All checked bags are subject to a fee. Bags will not be accepted if they weigh more than 32kg or have dimensions larger than 81 x 119 x 119cm. Each passenger can check up to 2 bags of either 15kg or 20kg each paying the fee during the online reservation process. Checking a bag at the airport is considerably higher than when done online. Prices to check luggage depend on if it is low or high seasons, and also depending on if the bag weighs 15kg or 20kg. Bags exceeding this weight allowance will be subject to extra fees (£20 per excess kilogram).

    Cabin luggage allowance

All passengers, except infants, have a hand baggage allowance of 10kg which includes 1 free piece of cabin luggage and 1 personal item. The new Ryanair hand luggage allowance defines a personal item as one of the following: handbag, briefcase, laptop, shop purchase, camera, etc.

    Best deals on flights #svr #travels #online #booking

    #best deals on airline tickets
    #

    BestDeals.com.au – Booking Flights

    1. Think in advance

From time to time your trip will be fairly spontaneous. Unfortunately, generally speaking flight tickets prices will increase significantly in the last month and more so over the last few days before a flight. It’s simple supply and demand. The further out you can book, the cheaper you’re plane ticket will be.

    2. Last Minute Deals

In contrast to tip 1, there are some airlines that will not fill up their flight and will try to sell the last few tickets very cheaply. If you’re not stressed about waiting around at an airport for several hours, you can even go on a waiting list to get cheap flights as the day progresses.

    3. Try to be flexible

If you’ve not already organised your holidays with work, try to get your boss to work around your flight times. Often, if there is a special event in any given city, flight prices will be much higher than they would be in an off peak time. It’s best to look into special events and holidays before you book flights and before you organise time off.

    4. Book Immediately

“Is it just me or has this flight price increased in the last hour?”. The answer is, yes! This is certainly possible! Airlines make a lot of money because they know how to fill up flights based around people’s booking habits. If they see a few people looking at the same flight within a short period of time, bet your bottom dollar the price is going to increase slightly.

    5. Look for nearby Airports

Budget airlines do not always show up on flight comparison websites. What’s more, budget airlines will often fly nearby the destination you are wanting to go to. So once you’ve done some research, check out budget airlines and their destinations. Ensure you check exactly where they fly to, because it can be up to an hour train ride from the city they say that they fly to!

    6. International and Domestic Flights

If you see a good deal on an international flight or a cheap domestic flight, book it immediately. There’s every likelihood that someone else has the same idea as you and you could miss out on the cheap flight deal.

Four Places to Look for Holiday Deals on Airfare

    Impacting Travel

Airlines are a strange breed when it comes to Black Friday and Cyber Monday holiday deals. They want in on the offers, of course, but they have been stingy in not announcing what their sales are ahead of time.

Maybe that s just part of the allure, but we figured it would be helpful to drop a few tips on you in case you want to give your loved one(s) a trip for the holidays.

Note that of the two days, Cyber Monday is often the better deal for airlines. According to a story in the Miami Herald, Last year Cyber Monday triggered a fourfold increase in worldwide flight bookings, according to research by Sojern, a data-marketing company that expects November bookings to skyrocket again this year.

    1) CHECK THE WEBSITES Airlines love to put their deals up on their own websites, so this is a logical first step. Alaska Airlines website is advertising a deal right now with flights starting at $59. Starting Sunday, Nov. 29, and continuing into Cyber Monday, Fiji Airways is offering up to 40 percent off round-trip flights to Fiji, Australia and New Zealand. Here are the websites for most of the major airlines:

Hacks to Save Money on Europe Travel

    1. Book x2 one-way tickets

If you re travelling to Europe you re likely to be visiting more than one country. Who are we kidding, you re likely to be visiting a handful! Traditionally it has always been cheaper to book a return ticket from your point of origin but times are changing. A great way to save a tonne of cash is to book a one-way flight to your starting point, journey from there to your final destination (i.e. Land in Paris, travel throughout Western Europe and fly out of Prague in Central Europe), and not have to worry about travelling in a loop back to your starting point. This is particularly helpful if you intend to visit the East and West. i.e. flying into Moscow and flying out of Paris.

    2. Travel Off Season (for two reasons)

It should come at no surprise that summer is in fact the worst time of the year to visit Europe. Firstly, the prices are hiked, the hotels are booked, and the lines for museums are out-of-control long. Secondly, this is the least authentic Europe experience you can allow yourself to encounter. Why? None of the locals will be in town during the summer they mostly escape the summer madness and flee on holidays of their own. This is particularly try in the likes of Paris and Rome, but also through to smaller towns and countries in Central/Eastern Europe. Typically summer season in Europe is the least authentic experience you can have, its expensive, it is often far too hot, and it is certainly going to be filled with elbow nudging and toe-tapping as you test your patience.

So, when should you travel to Europe? Literally any of the months (and seasons) outside of summer. Rule out June, July and August.  If you are going to visit Europe in summer, know where to go to avoid the crowds . Take any of the other months and you will be fine. Typically prices also hike over Christmas/New Years, which is of course true for anywhere in the world.

    3. Try stick to Family Run Businesses

So you want to save money but you don t want it to mean sleeping in dorm rooms or living off greasy carbs for your designated allotment of weeks? The best value for money you will find is almost always going to be through family run businesses. If you want the best deal that combines both price with comfort. family-run hotels, restaurants, tour operators, etc. are one of your best bets.

Its easy to look at a map of Europe and let your eyes boggle over the endless possibilities Rome; Paris; London; Prague; Vienna; Moscow; Kiev . the list is sure to be endless. But it is also important to give your trip a focus and stick to your instincts. If its your first time in Europe, a great idea is to stick to the hotspots . If you re more interested in Modern World History, Central/Eastern Europe is likely to be more your style. If you want to get off the beaten path, there are some unbelievable hidden gems lying further to the East and along the coast of the Baltic states. But one thing is for certain: you can t do it all at once. And even if you can (assuming you ve just won the lottery), you shouldn t. Europe should be explored on multiple trips at various times in your life depending on what takes your interest at that given time. Here s a few sample itineraries to get you started:

    European Highlights

LONDON AMSTERDAM PARIS FRENCH RIVIERA FLORENCE ROME VENICE MUNICH

London is always a great place to start, particularly if you are travelling from New York and looking to save money on flights. If you re travelling from further abroad, consider airports with lower taxes such as Dublin, Ireland. From London, you have the choice to either travel by train or air to Amsterdam and make your way through Paris, the French Riviera, through to the hotspots of Italy, and finally to Bavaria in Germany.

    Staying Central

MUNICH PRAGUE VIENNA BRATISLAVA BUDAPEST KRAKOW

If you d prefer to venture beyond the hotspots and uncover authentic and awe-inspiring Central Europe, Munich is a great place to start with many airlines flying into here or Frankfurt also a great starting point in Germany. From there, make your way to the capital of Czech Republic, followed by train travel through Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest, and onward to Krakow, Poland.

    Discovering the East

    MOSCOW ST PETERSBURG TALLIN RIGA

There s so much to discover in the East and no matter how many times you ve heard it, you can t hear it enough Eastern Europe is SO UNDERRATED and cheap. Starting in the Russian capital, be sure to spend a few days discovering the city that has suffered turbulence and turmoil over the years, but manages to WOW visitors with its Orthodox churches and stunning underground metro stations. From there, take the high-speed train to St Petersburg and discover Russia s history beyond the modern world back to the days of Peter the Great and Russian regality. From there its just a short ferry ride to Tallin in Estonia. Onwards to Riga, you will be baffled by the beauty of this Baltic state that doesn t earn nearly enough credit for its charm.

    Visiting the North

Slow-paced travel in NORWAY SWEDEN DENMARK FINLAND

The Northern countries are undeniably the most expensive countries to visit in Europe, so if you re going to go, it is absolutely necessary to travel at a slower pace in order to make it viable and rewarding.

Most museums offer free entry on particular days. The Louvre offers free entry on the first Sunday of the month for example, which can be a nice saving if you re on a tight budget. If you can swing your schedule to allow for it, avoiding museum entrance fees is a great chance to save money.

Before you leave, its important to have a definitive plan for handling your finances whilst abroad. ATM fees are increasingly expensive and exchanging cash is not only costly but equally risky. Be sure to do your own up-to-date research on the credit cards available to you, but do know that the best deal I have personally found is the 28 Degrees Mastercard. There are no fees when using it as a credit card, however be wary of ATM fees which once weren t a problem but have recently been implemented (given the popularity of the card, I assume)!

A huge money saver comes when you choose to travel to countries not yet on the Euro. Take advantage of the exchange rates and consider countries like: Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Lithuania, Poland, or Romania. But beware of expensive countries not on the Euro because their economies are doing so well they d lose out by doing so! These include: The UK, Denmark and Sweden.

Travelling in general gets ridiculously expensive when you have to pay a higher price for everything from accommodation to food to transportation, the costs soon add up. One of the biggest money savers for me over the years has been eating from supermarkets and snacking on-the-go. If you re with others, take this one step further and make it a fun activity by grabbing some eats in the supermarket and having a picnic underneath the Eiffel Tower (champagne optional).

Saving money buying your own food for picnics is one thing, but eating with the season takes it up one more notch to serious budgeting skills .

There are certain shows around the world worth the investment (Moulin Rouge, Cirque du Soleil shows and Broadway shows for example), but don t forget many of the best entertainment around the world is completely free! Whether its a free event or just people watching from a public park or sidewalk, there s always something intriguing waiting to be discovered without a price tag.

How to Find Great Deals on Vacation and Travel

    March 31st, 2009 (by J.D. Roth )

    Comments (56)

My wife and I have begun to explore the idea of taking a trip later this year. We re in the preliminary stages of our research and budgeting. Though we aren t ready to book anything yet, it s fun to look at what s available, and to dream of where we might go.

Over the weekend, I polled my followers on Twitter to ask their advice for finding great travel deals. Here are some of the tips and websites they recommended. I m sure I ll refer to this list often in the coming months.

You might also consider a home exchange with another vacationing family. You can broker these sorts of deals through sites like HomeLink and HomeExchange .

Airfare Watchdog allows you to receive daily or weekly e-mail updates about travel between destinations you choose. (My first e-mail included a $98 round-trip from Portland to Baltimore.) The site features its top 50 fares of the day. as well as a special fare of the day. You can even read the Airfaire Watchblog to keep up-to-date on the latest deals.

Rick Steves is a travel guru who is featured prominently on public broadcasting, both television and radio. His advice is down-to-earth and geared toward folks who want to experience Europe through the back door .

A recent New York Times article offered some great tips for saving on airfare. even after you book your tickets. The article mentioned a site called Yapta . which will automatically watch to make sure you re getting the best deal:

Using your confirmation number, Yapta.com will automatically track the price of your ticket, taking the airline’s fees into consideration. If the price drop exceeds the fee, Yapta will send you, without charge, an e-mail message or Twitter alert notifying you of the refund. You can then call the airline to claim the credit or pay $15 to have Yapta do it for you on weekdays.

Yapta is basically PriceProtectr for air travel.

Richard F. a veteran of many cruises, shared the following tip via e-mail:

Our upcoming Alaska cruise was base priced at $399 a week, leaving from Vancouver. We discovered it was cheaper to do the return leg, from Whittier (outside Anchorage) back to Vancouver, than it would have been book a flight from Anchorage to Vancouver. So we re taking two weeks, the second retracing our steps. These are the best prices we ve seen for cruises in years.

Though I m usually not a cruise kind of guy, I might consider one if the costs were low enough. Here are some additional travel tips shared by Get Rich Slowly readers:

While the information I ve collected here is useful to a novice like me, it s probably too basic for anyone who travels often. If you re interested in advanced travel information, visit my pal Chris Guillebeau at The Art of Non-Conformity. It s his goal to visit every country on Earth by 2013. Chris has produced two fantastic e-books based on his experiences:

    • The Unconventional Guide to Discount Airfare
    • How to Become a Travel Ninja

It s fun to play with these travel sites and to dream of where I might go: England, Antarctica, Australia. But to be honest, the more I think about it, the more appealing it sounds to just book a cheap rental home on the Oregon Coast. The important part of the vacation is spending time alone with my wife, not luxury hotels and fancy restaurants.

Do you have tips for finding great travel deals? Are there web sites you swear by? What are your favorite vacation ideas? How often do you travel, and where do you go? What tips can you offer to GRS readers?

Note: If you d like to help build future Get Rich Slowly posts, follow me on Twitter. I also tweet about personal-finance stories I discover (and a little about my daily life).

GRS is committed to helping our readers save and achieve their financial goals. Savings interest rates may be low, but that is all the more reason to shop for the best rate. Find the highest savings interest rates and CD rates from Synchrony Bank. Ally Bank. GE Capital Bank. and more.

How to Land the Best Deals on Airline Tickets

    John Pirman

For most of us, shopping has moved from travel agents and the telephone to the Internet. Travel Web sites have given consumers access to enormous amounts of information — too much information for many people. Still, with a few smart clicks, you can wade through vast amounts of fare data.

Here are some tips to land great deals.

    Time It Right

In general, the cheapest days and times to fly are Tuesday, Wednesday, and Saturday afternoon, when airlines usually have the weakest demand for tickets. When you shop for tickets can affect the price as well. The worst time to shop is on the weekend — just the time many people are also shopping!

Airlines tend to file price increases on Thursdays to see if competitors will match over the weekend. If rival airlines don’t follow, the price increases can be rolled back by Monday morning before business travelers start buying again. Fare sales typically begin on Mondays and often expire on Fridays. So in general, Monday through Wednesday are the best days to buy.

    Rights of Passage

When it comes to airline tickets, travelers have few rights. Here are some of the protections you do have:

    • Change of plans: Most U.S. airlines allow buyers of nonrefundable tickets to hold a reservation for 24 hours or will provide refunds if you cancel within 24 hours.
    • Advance cancellations, schedule changes: If the airline cancels your flight or changes its schedule, you can request a refund or rebooking.
    • Airline problems: The airline must offer you a refund or pay for accommodations if you are stranded because of a problem caused by the airline.
    • Weather problems: You’re on your own. Some airlines may offer discounted rates at hotels. Some airports provide cots and blankets.
    • Delays: No compensation. Airline ticketing contracts promise to provide a seat on the next available flight.

Typically, I start a search using Orbitz.com because I find its pricing matrix the easiest to navigate of the online travel sellers. Lots of people like Kayak.com because it searches not only online travel agencies but also airline Web sites themselves, and then offers a one-click link to whichever Web site had the price most appealing to you. Mobissimo.com is another popular site that searches multiple ticket-selling sites at one time, including ticket consolidators and other ultra-cheap outlets.

Find the site that you are most comfortable with. It’s unlikely one will have prices that differ significantly from the others.

One way to expand your fare search automatically is to install a tool on your computer from SideStep.com. With this tool, every time you search for airline tickets, either at an online travel agency or an airline itself, a SideStep box opens on your screen and asks if you want SideStep to conduct the same search. SideStep, which has merged with Kayak, goes out and makes an inquiry for you at some 200 different places — Web sites of discount airlines, for example, that may have cheaper prices. It’s a handy way to boost your search power.

    Another Tool to Try

A tool popular with road warriors is found at ITA Software’s itasoftware.com. ITA can list different flights by many different factors, such as the trip’s duration or connection times. It can create its own connections and routings, sometimes producing cheaper prices but with bizarre routings. It may turn out that the cheapest way to get from Los Angeles to Cleveland is to fly via Boston. But do you really want to connect in Boston?

One handy feature of ITA’s search engine is that you can search for multiple destinations just by stringing them together in the Destination box. Suppose you want to go to Europe, but are indifferent about where you want to land. You can put lots of airport codes or just the city names in the destination box, separated by semi-colons, and one search will list loads of flights, with the cheapest listed first.

Two other Web sites can give you even more information, and more confidence that you are making the right choice. FareCompare.com shows you the cheapest tickets available on the route you want for the next 11 months, shown by month (airlines set their schedules and fares only 11 months out.)

Adapted from The Wall Street Journal Guide to Power Travel: How to Arrive with Your Dignity, Sanity and Wallet Intact by Scott McCartney. Copyright 2009 by Scott McCartney. Published by Harper, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers.

Another of FareCompare’s niftiest features: Search for the lowest prices from your departure city world-wide. There may be times when you are indifferent about your destination — you just want to go to the beach, cheap.

Meanwhile, Farecast.com predicts whether the price of a ticket will likely rise or fall. In addition, you can see what the cheapest price was over several weeks. That can be helpful in trying to determine the best price.

    Consider ‘Consolidators’

Some of the lowest-priced tickets available are found with airline ticket consolidators — brokers who take seats from airlines and sell them at deep discounts. Think of them as the outlet mall for airlines. There are flights that airlines know won’t fill at published prices, and to avoid fare wars with competitors, they dump seats with consolidators.

Use usaca.com to search for consolidators, but be careful. While the savings can be substantial, the tradeoffs can be significant: With some consolidator tickets, you may not be eligible for frequent-flier miles, or, more importantly, pre-reserved seat assignment. You often don’t get to pick your airline or your route, and there may be a broad time window of when you agree to travel. You pay the cheapest price, and you are on the bottom of the service totem pole.

Another option to consider is buying a package tour, which may or may not include a consolidator’s ticket. Online agencies such as Expedia, Travelocity, and Orbitz have gotten quite skilled at putting together packages. The magic comes mostly from the travel vendors negotiating special rates with hotels.

Happy hunting. May you always pay less than the person sitting next to you.

How to Get the Best Price on Car Rentals

by FrugalTrader on May 7, 2012

With the summer right around the corner, we decided to plan a short vacation with the kids to visit friends and family.  This particular vacation involves a short flight, a relatively long drive (car rental)  for an infant and toddler (3.5 hrs), and a house rental for the week.  As I m the research to death type person to get the best deal, I thought I would share a method of getting a good price on a car rental.

When I started the search, I went directly car rental company websites and googled coupons.  While I found coupons helpful for reducing overall cost, it didn t get me the deal that I wanted before pulling the trigger.  Here s what I did to get the best price possible on a car rental.

    1.  Research Market Value

To get a deal, the first step is to figure out the market value.  In this case, I had to figure out the going rate for car rentals on a particular date and specific car size. Since we are bringing the two kids, we wanted something with a bit of luggage space.  In my experience, Expedia usually has very reasonable car rental rates, so it s a good place to start.  After that, I typically cross check the prices with the car rental company websites.  It usually works out that Expedia is cheaper than the direct website.

    2.  Get Auction Prices

As mentioned, we were looking for a particular size vehicle and in the city that we were looking, it meant only a couple of vehicle types to choose from.  As we were comfortable with both vehicles (ie. luggage capacity with decent gas mileage) choices,  auction sites like Hotwire and Priceline can work well in this situation.

Hotwire works by offering the user a low price, but the user can not choose the company, just the vehicle size.  I assume that the car rental companies bid their lowest rate to Hotwire on a daily basis.  Knowing that, it s best to watch the vehicle rental price over a period of time as it will likely fluctuate daily.  Before moving onto the next step, I usually wait until the car rental price has plateaued for at least a week.

    3. Bid your Price!

Now that you know the going rate, and the lowest price that car rental companies are willing to accept via Hotwire, it s time to use that information to your advantage.   This leads to Priceline, where you can bid what you are willing to pay.  You can bid any price on a particular car size, but Priceline has the option to reject your bid which means that you won t be able to bid again for 24 hours.

For me, I would have been perfectly happy with the Hotwire price, but the idea of getting a better deal was too enticing.  With my first attempt, I bid 37% below the lowest Hotwire price.  Rejected.  The next day, I bid 21% below and rejected again.  Then I decided to give it one more shot with a bid 12% below my lowest researched price bingo, it was a done deal.

In total, with a bit of due diligence, the price I paid for the car rental was 44% lower than the best Expedia price for the same car size.  As an added savings tip, don t forget to book with a credit card with car rental insurance coverage .

Do you have any tips on getting a deal on a car rentals?

Thanks for the info. That sound like it could be very effective way of getting a deal.

We have a trip to the US planned for July and will be renting a car. I would like to try the hotwire/priceline thing, but we have the requirement to pick up in one city and drop off in another. I don t know if that s possible with those sites. The drop off charges vary from $100 to $500 and depend on which city you are dropping off in.

    bm2wong May 7, 2012, 12:31 pm

    A couple of suggestions:

How does Priceline/Hotwire work the location of the rental? I find most websites default to airport locations.

I would also suggest BetterBidding.com, as you can see what people are renting cars (and hotels) for.

I research things too much as well so my current strategy (to reduce wasted time), is check out BetterBidding.com and go directly to alamo, as they often have cheaper rates on cars.

I ve been using the older conventional way, calling the different car rental companies near my departure location by phone, their phone number could be easily identified on google maps. Also, ask for different types of discounts, AAA/CAA/Goverment Employee rates, they will do the comparison for you on their side in terms of what best deal you can get with them. I found most of the time I get better prices calling than from their websites. I ve never used priceline, but would like to give it a try next time, but I agree with Joel, sometimes we just overlook the valuable time we spent on searching for deals . D (Hence, I ll try his suggestion as well

Kayak, Expedia, etc. give you a good starting point. I did that recently and then thought hey, my company has a travel site and I was able to beat the best price by $20 per day. With that in hand, I could probably go to Priceline and bid a few dollars per day under the corporate rate. But then Priceline charges you right away, whereas with the corp. reservation it is guaranteed but not paid for. Particularly at airport locations, the largest cost is in the fees, not the per day rate.

I think there is some great info here, but not all car rental companies or locations are the same. I don t just want a great price, I want good service. Too many times I ve taken the lowest price only to find myself standing in a long line once I arrived, and then standing in a hot parkade while workers tried to locate a vehicle. I won t mention the dog companies, but I have never been disappointed with the service from Enterprise.

In Jerusalem, spend time in Old City of Jerusalem and the Jewish Quarter, home of the Wailing Wall and the Dome of the Rock. On a walking tour, you can see so many biblical sites, including the Rock of Agony, where Jesus wept over Jerusalem, the Stations of the Cross and Jesus’ crucifixion site, where now the Church of the Holy Sepulchre is found. Two museums in Jerusalem are highly recommended: the Israel Museum with the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Holocaust Memorial at Yad Vashem.

A visit to the Dead Sea is the highlight of any Israel vacation. An inland lake, lying more than 1,000 feet below sea level, it has more minerals and salt than any other body of water in the world. Soak in the salty water, feel the unusual buoyancy and benefit from its rejuvenating properties. An interesting cultural opportunity on many Israel tours is a visit to a kibbutz, a collective community where people live, work and raise families communally.

Japan on a Budget, Tips for Cheap Travel! Japan Travel Mate

Japan on a Budget, Tips for Cheap Travel!

Here s a non-exhaustive collection of ideas for travelling Japan without spending a lot of money. These ideas for cheap travel are somewhat random, and unordered, but take a look and you ll be sure to pick up a tip or two to save money on your Japan holiday.

    Things To Do In Japan

    In this article:

    Travel in off-peak times

Now this doesn t mean you will be missing the good weather. Peak times in Japan are during the major national holidays and the school holidays.

The best time is April. This is spring in Japan and students are at school, the cherry blossoms are blooming and the weather is great. September and October are good times also, it is autumn in Japan and everyone is back to school and work.

Around the end of April and beginning of May is Golden Week in Japan. 4 national holidays over a week, prices for accommodation go up and shinkansens are booked solid best to avoid this time!

Mid-July and all of August are summer holidays in Japan. which means peak domestic travel and hence, high prices on just about everything. It is easily the busiest time of year and also the hottest.

    Japan Rail Pass

When people tell me they re going to visit Japan, the first thing I ask them is have you bought your Japan Rail Pass yet?

The JR Pass is available to anyone on a tourist (Temporary Visitor) visa and gives you unlimited travel on all Japan Rail buses, trains and shinkansen (bullet trains) the only exception is you can t travel on the fastest express services.

The Japan Rail Pass just flash this pass at the ticket gates and stroll on through

At first glance, the pass may seem expensive. Last time I travelled to Japan on a tourist visa I paid about $600 AUD for a 3 week JR Pass. Consider this example: a return trip on the shinkansen (bullet train) from Nagoya to Okayama is normally about 24,000 yen (about $300 AUD). Osaka to Tokyo is much further and more expensive. I did about 6 of these trips during a 3 week stay, so I saved about $1000 AUD and saw a lot of the country.

7, 14 or 21 day passes are available and conditions are you must be travelling on a tourist visa and you have to purchase the JR Pass before you enter Japan. Check costs and buy a JR Pass online .

    Cheap shinkansen travel

If you can t get a JR Pass, but you don t want to take the bus, there are cheaper options for the shinkansen. You can buy an unreserved seat, which means a seat is not guaranteed. People tend to sit in the carriage vestibules and there is nothing wrong with that. Being a super fast train, you re not in for a long journey! But if you travel in off-peak times, and during the day (i.e. not the morning or evening when shinkansen is used for work travel) then you ll get a cheaper ticket AND a seat.

    JR West Shinkansen series 700.

New Low-Cost Airline: PEOPLExpress Tickets Go on Sale – NBC News

New Low-Cost Airline: PEOPLExpress Tickets Go on Sale

The days of the airline stewardess joke — coffee, tea, or me? — are gone in more ways than one.

Tickets from $59 went on sale Wednesday afternoon for PEOPLExpress. the new airline that seeks to capitalize on the goodwill for the name of one of the first low-budget airlines that disappeared decades ago amid industry consolidation. But with its new a la carte pricing for everything from overhead bin space to coffee, tea and water, unprepared fliers may be in for sticker shock.

All of the airline’s flights will be in and out of its hub at Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport in Virginia, with only three destinations when it starts flying June 30. The airline’s two daily round-trip flights to Newark, New Jersey, will start with base fares from $76 each way; a daily round-trip to Boston will cost $76 each way; and its daily round-trip to Pittsburgh will cost $59 each way.

Service to West Palm Beach, Florida, will start July 15 with one daily round-trip flight and fares priced from $89 each way.

Flights to Atlanta will start Aug. 1 with one-way fares priced at $79. The Atlanta route will offer round-trip service once a day, except Tuesdays.

On Aug. 28, service will start to New Orleans for $119 each way as well as to St. Petersburg/Clearwater, Florida, from $89 each way. Only three weekly round-trips will be offered to St. Petersburg and New Orleans.

All those fares come with a serious restrictions apply asterisk as fliers will have to pay extra for services that many other airlines still offer for free.

On board, coffee or tea will sell for $1; soft drinks water and juice will cost $2; beer will be $5; and a proper cocktail will set you back $7.

Carry-on bags in overhead bins will cost $25 per bag per flight segment while a single checked bag will cost $20, and a second will add $25 more and if you must, $75 for a third. If you have to check a bag at the gate, that’s $50, and if it’s overweight, an extra $75 fee will apply. An exit-row seat will cost an extra $25 each way while more comfortable Living Large seats will cost an extra $59 per flight segment. Advance seat assignments cost $15 each way.

On board, coffee or tea will sell for $1; soft drinks water and juice will cost $2; beer will be $5; and a proper cocktail will set you back $7. The good news comes on the snacks pricing: Complimentary.

Carry-on bags will be free if they fit under your seat, a company spokesman said.

This past Friday, the airline announced it would launch. and technically will be known as Vision Airlines, dba PEOPLExpress while it gets its full certification from the Federal Aviation Administration. It will fly leased 150-seat Boeing 737-400 aircraft operated by Las Vegas-based Vision Airlines.

PEOPLExpress hopes to expand to 24 cities within five years, with hubs in Pittsburgh; New Orleans; San Antonio, Texas; and Atlantic City, New Jersey, CEO Jeff Erickson told CNBC in an interview last week.

At its first hub, the airline will operate two gates on Concourse A at Newport News. Tickets can only be purchased through its website or its call center, which is open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern time.

The original PEOPLExpress began flying in 1981 and was based at Newark. It was later acquired by Continental, which was then acquired by United. The new airline has adopted the old logo, but with a new green scheme rather than the old brown, burgundy and orange. Otherwise the new airline is not affiliated with the old airline of the same name, Erickson said, except that some of the executives worked for the old airline.

PEOPLExpress isn’t the only new airline with plans to take off this year. An all-business class airline, tentatively called Dream Jet, has announced plans to fly between Paris and New York. And Eastern Air Lines Group has filed its initial application with the U.S. Department of Transportation to begin operations.

    Peru Tours

Save up to 40% on Peru tours

    Learn More About Peru Tours

A large, mountainous country on South America’s Pacific coast, Peru offers visitors the opportunity to visit beautiful beaches, panoramic mountains and tropical jungle. Most international travelers to Peru make at least three key stops to Lima, Cuzco and Machu Picchu.

Cuzco is nestled high in the Andes, a fascinating mix of Inca and colonial Spanish architecture. Almost every central street has the remains of ancient Inca walls, arches and doorways that serve as the foundation for the colonial and modern buildings. Consider souvenir shopping in Cuzco, as indigenous women, wearing pretty embroidered shawls and with their long dark hair in braids, sell woven blankets and handmade crafts and jewelry here. Pisac, a day trip from Cuzco in the “Sacred Valley of the Incas,” is also an excellent place to purchase hand-crafted items.

For many on a Peru vacation, the Inca city of Machu Picchu is the highlight of their visit. Tour the archeological site with its myriad staircases, terraces, temples, palaces, towers and fountains, and marvel at the fascinating structures that were buried beneath jungle vegetation for centuries, only revealed to the western world in the early twentieth century. There are many hiking options here, but one of the least strenuous is a walk out to the pedestrian Inca Drawbridge along a cliff-hugging trail.

Some exceptions may apply. THESE FUNDS WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE FOR YOUR USE.

When the rental is over we will process the reversal but the bank may take time to post it back to the account – unless you already paid toward your rental, in which case the hold will be only $100 USD. While this hold is in place, the funds will not be available for your use.

    – For security reasons, if you are unable to satisfy the credential or hold requirements at the location in which you pick up your car, you will not be allowed to rent. • If you cancel prior to your scheduled pick-up time, we’ll refund the full prepaid amount less a $50 processing fee.
  • If you don’t show up for your rental, we’ll refund the full prepaid amount less a $100 no-show processing fee.

Save Money on Travel With These 4 Websites

    Save

    Shares & Saves

Money-savvy travelers have never had a wider variety of digital tools at their disposal for finding low fares and prices. As a seasoned traveler, I’ve found the following websites and digital tools most useful for saving money on amazing trips. Add these to your budget travel toolkit by bookmarking them now.

    Playing with Kayak Explore

While I book most of my flights using strategically earned points and miles. I occasionally choose to pay cash for a flight. When I do, Kayak is the first booking site I turn to. Kayak, whose motto is “Search One and Done,” combines hundreds of other travel booking sites together so searching on Kayak means you’re searching all of them.

Kayak also features a very handy price predictor. This forecasting tool uses historical information to predict whether the price you’ve just searched will likely go up or down in the future and whether you should book now or wait.

Should it recommend that you wait to book, Kayak also offers fare alerts. And because Kayak’s links are static (which is not always the case with travel booking sites), you can also bookmark the results page of your search and come back to it later.

Kayak Explore is a fun and interesting feature if you don’t know where you want to go and simply want to see your options. Set a home airport, and it displays an interactive map of the world with the lowest fares for each destination.

    2. FareCompare Twitter feeds

    3. Travelzoo

Travelzoo employs a team of travel experts who scour the Internet for the best travel deals available, from airfare to hotels to entertainment. Travelzoo is independent, so deals are selected based on actual merit, and reviews are unbiased. Subscribe to weekly emails or use the RSS feeds with an RSS-to-email IFTTT recipe to have the latest deals sent to you on a more frequent basis.

    4. Flyertalk

Flyertalk is the ultimate online community for mileage junkies and travel hackers (people who strategically take advantage of mileage reward programs to collect large amounts of points and miles). As a forum with a highly niched user base, it can be intimidating for new users, especially if you’re unfamiliar with travel hacking. However, it’s a good place to learn about the world of budget travel and be among the first to find out about unusually low-cost deals. The best way to use Flyertalk is to immerse yourself in it, so take some time to read through the threads to familiarize yourself with how this site can help you plan your next trip.

There are a lot of great websites and resources out there, but I consider these to be among the best. Bookmark these four sites, and you’ll be well on your way to saving money next time you travel.

Top tips on travel to Ireland: from handling the weather to the locals (PHOTOS)

Heading to Ireland later this year or next? There may be a few things you need to know about before you head over.

Heading to Ireland later this year or next? There may be a few things you need to know about before you head over.

    1. Check the baggage restrictions on flights

They can catch you out, especially if you’re flying within Europe with Ryanair and you get charged a gazillion euros for carry-on luggage. Don’t forget to Google beforehand and check out the weight and size restrictions.

    2. You’re going to need an adapter

We’ve wonky looking plug sockets here in Ireland so if you’re making your way over you’d better stock up on the adapters. This is especially true for Americans.

    3. It’s going to rain

It will. You might as well pack your wellies now if you’re planning to head over because in Ireland when it rains – it pours.

There’s also a chance that the sun might actually make an appearance so don’t forget the sunglasses!

    5. We don’t all speak in Irish

Thankfully it’s not necessary to be fluent in Irish before you arrive – English is our main language. Not many people regularly speak in Irish in Ireland unless you’re wandering around in the Gaeltacht areas.

    6. But we phrase things differently

‘What’s the story?,’ ‘do you want a lift?’ and ‘get the shift’ are phrases used on a regular basis here but may not mean what you think they might mean. Never fear though, we’ve a guide to Irish sayings and phrases to help you along!

    7. We complain a lot

Usually about the weather, the banks or the government but don’t be afraid to join in – we love a good moan about the state of Ireland.

    8. We drive on the ‘wrong’ side of the road

And by wrong, I mean the left hand side. Just in case you were planning on renting a car!

    9. Look to your right when crossing

Following on from that, don’t forget to look to your right when you’re crossing a road. Thankfully there are now handy signs on the ground if you need a few pointers.

    10. We were born to jaywalk

Listen, we just can’t help it. If there’s even the smallest gap in traffic we’re going to go for it.

    11. Blasphemy is illegal

Yep, it’s true and written in Irish law – whether people actually abide by it however is another story altogether.

    12. Don’t order a ‘black and tan’ or ‘Irish car bombs ‘ in the local

Just don’t. The barman probably won’t have any idea what you’re ordering and others may find it a bit offensive – don’t bother to risk it, safer to order a pint.

    13. Tipping not compulsory

We’re not big tippers here in Ireland except in restaurant situations where the 10% to the waiter is almost a given. But no need to tip taxi drivers unless they’ve shown good service.

    14. If you’re planning to rent a car, don’t forget to book an automatic!

The majority of cars in Ireland use a manual gear stick so if you’re planning to rent when you’re here don’t forget to book an automatic in advance.

    15. Booking a taxi not always necessary

No need to call up a taxi every time you want to head somewhere, there are plenty to go around during the day. You can flag one down by stretching out the hand or just head to a taxi rank. But if you’re heading on an early morning flight home, best order one just to be sure. Taxi too expensive? Save a bit of money and take the bus instead!

    16. Buses won’t stop unless you put your hand out

If you are taking the bus this is vitally important. But be warned, some days even putting your hand out and waving it around won’t be enough to make them stop. So don’t be surprised if you see people at the bus stop jumping up and down in desperation when the bus is in view.

    17. Prepare to be late, the buses are never on time

No point in looking up the timetable, sometimes they don’t even bother turning up. This is particularly true for Dublin Bus whose buses randomly disappear off the timetable. You’re almost better off relying on these transport parody Twitter accounts.

    18. We tend to curse a lot

Mind your ears, we do it without realizing! But we don’t mean it to be offensive; it just sort of slips out.

    19. We almost take pride in the state of our potholes

Ireland’s country roads are notorious for having the regular pothole. You might as well take a crash course in rally driving before you tackle our roads.

    20. Anything over 17 degrees is considered warm

Degrees Celsius that is, room temperature, about 65 Fahrenheit. We’ll head out in t-shirts when it’s this warm.

    21. Off-licences close at 10pm

If you’re planning to head out or want a good night in, don’t forget that Irish off-licences, err liquor stores, close at 10pm

    22. The perfect night out ends with a 4 in 1

What’s a 4 in 1 I hear you say? Why it’s the most delicious thing to eat after a night on the town. Usually contains chips (fries), curry, rice and some form of chicken to nom on.

    23. If you don’t want to stick out as a tourist abandon your Aran jumper

Seriously. We don’t really wear them very often and if we do it’s probably in the comfort of our homes where we can’t be seen.

    24. Never say no to a cup of tea

You’d be mad to say ‘no!’ We’re known for our expert tea-making abilities so grab the opportunity to have a cuppa.
