One Way Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is not just for holidays or business trips abroad. Some of the more inventive and, dare we say it, better companies offer a range of policies for all travelling scenarios, including domestic insurance, frequent traveller, and one way travel insurance.

But why travel one way you might ask? A one-way policy is perfect for those heading abroad who intend to return to New Zealand, but don’t have firm return dates or flights planned. Downunder Insurance offers two one way travel insurance policies; our Plan F policy covers non-residents heading off on a one way trip to their home country while the Plan G policy covers residents currently overseas but heading back home.

What Does One Way Travel Insurance Cover?

Travellers often question why they need travel insurance when their ultimate destination is often back to their homeland. Once home, they will then be able to access medical treatment and health care without it costing a cent, so they shouldn t really need to be insured for this trip. Or should they?

Many travellers forget the huge range of cover that a travel insurance policy offers. While medical insurance and repatriation is top of the list of priorities when travelling in strange countries, don t forget that companies like Downunder, who specialise in travel insurance, are well aware that travel plans don t always run smoothly, and being experienced travellers themselves have created a policy to cover all niggles and mishaps that can mar your journey.

Cover for Belongings, Valuables and Documentation

Cover for cancellation fees and lost deposits starts as soon as the policy is issued while cover for all other policy sections will begin on the day of departure. Cover ends once the journey is completed.

As well as covering cancellation fees and lost deposits, non-resident insurance provides essential cover for loss or theft of luggage and personal effects. It also covers delays of these items and loss or theft of travel documents, traveller s cheques and credit cards and any expenses incurred due to travel plans being delayed, including alternative travel expenses. In the case of an incident relating to a third party, where accidental damage occurs, personal liability cover is a must.

New Zealand In-Bound Travel

Cover for this sort of journey can be purchased overseas and Downunder have offices in several countries as well as easy access online. Policies include the same cover as non-resident travel insurance except for the period within a waiting date of seven days from the start date, during which time cover is not available for some aspects of the policy including medical expenses, cancellation fees, and lost deposits. Cover ends when the journey has been completed or on the end date on the insurance certificate, whichever happens first.

Popular countries for Emigration include:

There are many different types of Visas available to suit the amount of time you want to spend away and the activities you will be doing. These include:

  • Working Visa
  • Holiday Visa
  • Working-travelling Visa

If you have a job offer in another country, then you can apply for a Working Visa. The means you will be allowed to enter and stay in another country on the condition that you have a firm job offer and you remain employed in that position.

Usually if you wanted to change jobs, your new employer would have to go through a thorough interview process to ensure that there were no native workers more suited to the position and confirm this with the immigration authorities.

A Holiday Visa means you can go away to another country for long periods of time without having to have a job waiting for you. This is often a popular choice for gap year students who wish to spend a significant amount of time travelling round a particular country such as Australia and Thailand.

A Working Travelling Visa combines both of the above. This is for people who wish to spend time in another country, aim to do some travelling but would also like to be able to work. You do not need a job offer to apply for this type of visa, but you are allowed to apply for work once you have arrived.

Visa applications for countries such as Canada, Australia, South Africa and New Zealand will usually require the following:

  • Proof of address
  • Copy of passport
  • Police certificate
  • Proof of funds
  • Medical declaration

Some countries such as the USA will require you to attend a face to face interview at the US embassy to assess your suitability.

What to Expect with One Way Travel Insurance

One-way travel insurance is named from the fact that those looking for this type of policy will typically be purchasing a one-way ticket to their destination. This individual may be moving abroad long term, or they may just be going on a long holiday abroad without any plans for when they will be returning. If this person were to buy a basic travel insurance policy, it would likely be unsuitable for their needs. This type of policy will cover such things as:

  • emergency medical assistance
  • emergency medical and hospital expenses
  • personal liability coverage
  • personal luggage coverage
  • luggage delay coverage
  • coverage in the case of death
  • repatriation if required in the event of an emergency
  • coverage for stolen money
  • cancellation, curtailment trip interruption

The fact that this is one-way coverage brings some important additional benefits such as:

  • i f you need to make a claim on this policy, you will be able to do this in your destination country rather than coming back to Australia to make a claim.

Do You Need One-Way Travel Insurance?

The one-way travel insurance policy will be suitable for a number of different types of individual, including:

  • Australians who are going abroad and have no real plans for when they will be returning home again
  • Australians who are returning home after a long period of being away

The one rule your airline hates the most

In 2012, the Transportation Department required air carriers to allow you to hold a reservation without payment or cancel a booking without penalty for 24 hours after your reservation, with some exceptions. (Photo: Scott Olson, Getty Images)

655 CONNECT TWEET 292 LINKEDIN 43 COMMENT EMAIL MORE

If there’s one regulation that airlines hate more than anything, it’s the 24-hour rule.

Can you blame them? In 2012, the Transportation Department required air carriers to allow you to hold a reservation without payment or cancel a booking without penalty for 24 hours after your reservation, with some exceptions.

That allowed passengers to fix mistakes, such as a misspelled name or a wrong date. They could just cancel the ticket and rebook, as long as their departure date was more than a week away. But this government-mandated “out” clause probably also cost airlines millions in revenue.

Now, regulators want to expand that rule to travel agencies, requiring that they also offer the same option for customers. A vast majority of agents already abide by the 24-hour rule, but a few travel retailers have discovered ways to weasel their way out.

If history is any guide, this rule will be as tough to enforce as version one. Unscrupulous ticket sellers love to redefine “day” or add new policies of their own to make it difficult to invoke this controversial clause. The only way we’ll benefit from this proposed regulation, assuming it’s adopted, is if we remember it — and invoke it.

Consider what happened to Shannon Harrell, a nursery school teacher who lives in Como, Italy. She paid $4,600 for round-trip tickets from Milan to Seattle this summer for her and her two sons. Within a few hours, she discovered a mistake. But when she tried to cancel the itinerary, a representative for eDreams, the European online agency she’d booked her tickets through, told her she was too late. The agency’s policy was only to refund the flight if canceled the same day, not within 24 hours.

“I just can’t believe that there’s nothing I can do but lose that money,” she says.

EDreams did not respond to questions about its refund rules.

It’s not just online agencies. Another reader, Christina Conte, was fare-shopping on the British Airways website when she noticed a pop-up window that cheerfully announced it offered “free” cancellations, as long as they were made within four hours. If she caught the mistake after then, but before her 24 hours were up, British Airways would charge her a “small fee.”

The Transportation Department has kept busy enforcing its 24-hour rule for airlines. Two summers ago, it fined EgyptAir $60,000 for violating rules requiring the disclosure of, among other things, the 24-hour rule. That September, it dinged Aeroflot with the same penalty, also for a 24-hour rule violation. Last May, the department issued an advisory reminding airlines that “carriers may not deceive consumers about the 24-hour reservation requirement.”

Clearly, airlines want your tickets to be completely non-refundable from the moment you push the “buy” button. So do online travel agencies.

No one knows how much money airlines were able to pocket because of a “no refunds” rule before 2012, but it’s likely that in the years since the DOT’s 24-hour rule went into effect, some ticketing agencies may have benefited by extracting a refund from an airline, then keeping a passenger’s money because of their own internal no-refunds policy.

To keep your money, agencies and airlines occasionally come up with “creative new twists” that allow them to circumvent regulations, says Michal Ann Strahilevitz, a marketing professor at Golden Gate University. The most common tactic is to interpret 24 hours as a day, and to tell customers they have until the end of the next business day, even when they complete their reservation at 11 p.m. That would give customers less than 24 hours.

“This is not the norm, and most good online travel agencies do honor the 24-hour rule exactly as it should be honored,” she says.

Online travel agencies seem cool to the Transportation Department’s latest proposed set of consumer protections, and no matter how well-intentioned, they are unlikely to be met with their approval.

In a perfect world, requesting that your travel agent refund an airline ticket within 24 hours shouldn’t be necessary. It’s not a perfect world.

Make the 24-hour rule work for you

Invoke the rule. The 24-hour rule is widely interpreted to apply to airline reservations, regardless of where they’re made. Remind your travel agency of the rule, and you’ll likely get a refund.

Contact the DOT. File a complaint via the Transportation Department’s Aviation Consumer Protection Division: dot.gov/airconsumer/file-consumer-complaint. A letter from DOT is often enough to secure a refund, even when technically, you’re not entitled to one under the existing rule.

Leave a comment on in support of the new rule. Click on regulations.gov and search for DOT-OST-2014-0056, then follow the directions.

How a pill without water can burn a hole in your

#

How a pill without water can burn a hole in your throat: One doctor learns the hard way never to gulp down tablets

Painful: Dr Max Pemberton found out the hard way how damaging it can be to take a tablet without water (picture posed by model)

A spoonful of sugar makes the medicine go down, as Mary Poppins once sang. But it would have been even more pertinent to advise always taking said medication with a large glass of water.

As a doctor, I’m used to rattling off words to this effect (the water bit, not sugar) as I hand over a prescription. But if, like me, you find it quite easy to just swallow a pill ‘dry’, you probably will. Sometimes, a glass of water means getting up from your desk.

And if they say ‘take with food’ but you forget at meal time, there’s no real harm in breaking the rule once, is there? Wrong.

I discovered the hard way just how dangerous what we medics call poor pill-taking habits can be. I am a perfectly fit, healthy 30-year-old. But because of just one antibiotic tablet, taken wrongly, I ended up in hospital for a week, and off work for a further six.

It started when I woke up one morning and went to get a glass of water. Still half asleep, I stood in the kitchen and took a gulp.

As I swallowed there was a sharp, excruciating pain across my chest and the water shot back out of my mouth.

The pain was so severe, I actually looked down to see if something had stabbed me.

RELATED ARTICLES

Nothing. I tried again and the same thing happened, only this time the pain was so much it bent me double and brought tears to my eyes. By the end of the day, I still hadn’t been able to swallow anything, even saliva.

I went to bed that evening, thirsty and hungry but concluding that whatever it was would go by the morning. It didn’t. By the next evening, a friend who works in A E came round to visit and was horrified.

Still unable to drink, I was badly dehydrated and my tongue had started to swell. She concluded that I was going into acute renal failure – whereby the kidneys stop working properly because of dehydration – and I was rushed into hospital.

Bitter: Dr Max Pemberton suffered excruciating pains across his chest after taking a tablet without much water

Rather embarrassingly, it was the hospital I work in. My colleagues fussed around me, desperately worried. I was given a drip to rehydrate me, while they scanned my heart and did X-rays of my chest.

The pain came on only when I tried to swallow – an excruciating stabbing sensation that took my breath away.

After each attack, I was left shaking and sweaty due to the pain. They were at a loss to find what was wrong. They offered painkillers, but I was unable to swallow them.

I saw five separate consultants, all of whom scratched their heads. Eventually they took me to theatre to look down into my oesophagus under general anaesthetic.

‘One of the tablets I had taken had got stuck in my throat. There were no pain nerves in that part of the oesophagus, so I hadn’t noticed as, over several weeks, it slowly broke down and eroded through the delicate tissue, burning a hole through to the muscle underneath. ‘

There, they found scar tissue and an obstruction. What could have caused so much damage, they asked? I shrugged my shoulders. By chance, a junior doctors asked if I’d taken any tablets recently.

About two weeks before I’d been on a short course of the antibiotic doxycycline for a chest infection.

It transpired that one of the tablets I had taken had got stuck in my throat. There were no pain nerves in that part of the oesophagus, so I hadn’t noticed as, over several weeks, it slowly broke down and eroded through the delicate tissue, burning a hole through to the muscle underneath.

This had been my fault – the tablet had got stuck because I’d swallowed it in a hurry without water, as I often did. I was astounded. And although what happened to me is apparently not uncommon, it is not something patients are routinely warned about.

Some medications are highly corrosive – either very acidic or very alkaline. The stomach cells are protected by mucus. But trapped in the oesophagus, the contents of the tablet burn, causing ulcers and scarring.

They can even burn right through, with fatal consequences. Sarah McMahon, who works in the A E department of an East London teaching hospital, has come across several patients in the past year with this complaint. ‘People just don’t realise that when it says they must take these tablets with water, it really is important,’ she told me.

To date, more than 100 medications have been found to cause pillinduced oesophagitis – including Vitamin C, iron supplements, aspirin and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen, as well as numerous antibiotics.

Thankfully, once halted the problem usually resolves on its own, although it can take several months to fully heal. It took two weeks before I could swallow solid food and I lost a stone in weight as a result. So, take tablets one at a time with a full glass of water.

Drink further glasses of water if you feel the tablet hasn’t gone down. Wait 15 minutes before going to bed or lying down after taking tablets. Hopefully, you’ll learn from my mistake.

First Week Signs Of Pregnancy #pregnancy #symptoms #one #week #after #conception

#

First Week Signs Of Pregnancy – Get To Know Them

To most of us, the first week sign of pregnancy is normally a missed period. However, you can only be sure if a home pregnancy test or a blood test gives a positive result. A missed period cannot be construed to be a 100% proof of pregnancy as it can be caused by various other factors such as use of birth control medication, stress, illness, quick loss or gain of weight or use of new medicines. There could be some other medical reason if you miss your menstrual cycle more than once.

The first week sign of pregnancy could be confusing if you have bleeding when the menstrual cycle is expected. This is known as implantation bleeding and it is light pink or brown in color. It can occur between 6 and 12 days after ovulation when the egg is fertilized and the implantation takes place in the uterus. This bleeding might send the wrong signal that you are not pregnant but this is not the case. As long as you do not get back pain, cramping or increased bleeding, implantation bleeding can do no harm.

The first week of pregnancy symptoms include feeling tired, getting irritated, tenderness of breasts, either craving or aversion to food, heightening of the sensitivity to smell, light-headedness or feeling dizzy. Some of these symptoms might be menstruation related and some or all of the symptoms might form part of first week symptoms of pregnancy. Each woman reacts differently to pregnancy and has different levels of symptoms. These symptoms are the result of the escalating levels of progesterone, hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) and estrogen that are essential for the proper growth and protection of the fetus, strengthening of the pelvic walls, and prevention of uterus contraction.

The first week signs of pregnancy also include frequent urination especially during the night. This is due to the increase in the processing of fluids through the kidneys because of the high blood flow during pregnancy. Consumption of beverages should be avoided a few hours prior to bedtime although high consumption of water during the day is recommended. You could be having urinary tract infection if you experience burning during urination. The first week of pregnancy symptoms should prompt you to go in for a home pregnancy test or a blood test to confirm the pregnancy as these symptoms could also be due to menstruation or health problems. In any case, you should read a lot about these symptoms in order to gain more knowledge.

The early signs of pregnancy first week could begin with the lightening of your period or complete stoppage of the same. You could start experiencing nausea, morning sickness or queasiness. These symptoms can cause utter disruption to your body systems and you should take small meals at regular intervals throughout the day. The first week signs of pregnancy might also manifest themselves in the form of swelling and tenderness of your breasts and darkness around the nipples, which could become broader as well.

You will start feeling the need to urinate more often and you will get tired more easily. The other symptoms could include constipation, heartburn, headaches, and mood swings. If you start experiencing these symptoms, you should visit your healthcare provider immediately. The first week signs of pregnancy should prompt you to get serious about your lifestyle and abstain from consuming addictive substances, as these might be harmful to you and your baby.

One Way Travel Insurance #travel #market

One way travel insurance

In the vast majority of cases when looking for travel insurance, you will need cover for an outward-bound journey and an inward-bound one. In this case it’s easy to compare regular travel insurance deals online and find the level of cover you need at the cheapest price.

However, in some rare and exciting circumstances, travellers might just be looking for one way travel insurance as they are not heading back to the UK.

So what does this involve?

What is one-way travel insurance?

As it says on the tin, one way travel insurance covers you for just an outward-bound journey that you make from the UK.

This could be for reasons such as emigrating to live your life in another part of the world with a few stop-offs planned along the way. Alternatively, you may be returning to the country of your origin having spent years living in the UK. Or it might simply be that you plan to come back to the UK but you are not sure of your return date.

In any case, you will need to opt for one way travel insurance.

Can I get one way travel insurance?

Most standard travel insurance deals you will come across when shopping online, apply to traditional holidays or trips that will eventually land you back in the UK.

However most of these standard travel policies can also be taken as one way trip, so long as you contact the insurer and request it. It’s always a good idea to get this part of the agreement in writing and have a print out to take with you.

How does one way cover work?

But just like with single trip or annual policies, that will cover you out of the UK and back again, travel insurance for one way trips comes with a time limit by which you should have arrived at your final destination.

Typically maximum cover for one way trip insurance, will last no more than a week from the point of leaving the UK. Bear in mind that cover will cease at the end of this timeframe so it’s a good idea to build in some emergency room in case your travel is delayed or you change your plans.

If you take less time than the maximum stated on your policy, cover will automatically lapse 24 hours after arriving at your destination.

What’s the difference between one-way travel cover and annual policies?

One way trip insurance is different from annual (or ‘multi-trip’) travel insurance as this provides cover for individual trips for a period of 12 months – but only if they start from and return to the UK.

One way travel insurance is also different to backpacker (or ‘gap year’ policies) which cover you for one extended trip to different countries for up to 12 months. But again, ultimately you must be starting from and returning to the UK and be a UK resident.

Why Windows Server Backup Keep Only One Copy? #windows #server #backup

Why Windows Server Backup Keep Only One Copy?

Does Windows Server Backup keep only one copy?

Many users have created backups using Windows Server Backup. Some users assigned a drive letter to the backup drive, and then check the image backup files. To their surprise, there was only one virtual hard disk (VHD) file in the backup location even after running scheduled backups several times. To figure out why this happened, you must understand how Windows Server Backup works. Actually, there no such thing about Windows Server Backup number of copies to keep. If you run a backup, Windows Server Backup will create a VHD file. Then Windows will create a shadow copy of target backup drive where stores the image backup. If you keep running scheduled backups, a lot of shadow copies will be taken. Though there may be one VHD file or VHDX file (in Winodws Server 2012 or latter), you can still restore to previous versions using these shadow copies.

How to track the missing VHD?

To better understand where the VHD file goes, you can actually track the windows server backup multiple copies. To list all the shadow copies, you can run a command “ssadmin list shadows” in an elevated command prompt.

Based on the “Shadow Copy ID” shown in the output, you can find out the backup that is associated with the shadow copy by getting the snapshot ID. To reveal the snapshot of the backups, you can run the command “wbadmin get versions”.

If you are still not sure about this, you can assign a drive letter to the shadow copies. and then you can view the contents in File Explorer by using the following command.

Diskshadow shadowcopyID driveLetter

For example, to assign drive letter H: to shadow copy . However, if you need more easier ways to handle multiple backup versions, you can switch to third party server backup software that does not have a limit number of copies.

How to keep multiple backup copies?

The server backup and recovery program, AOMEI Backupper Server allows you to save many versions of backup files that can be easily handled in File Explorer. It supports daily/weekly/monthly schedule backup, and you can choose to perform it with full, incremental/differential backup. What’s more, it provides the Disk Space Management feature to automatically clean up the previous obsolete backups.

To backup Windows Server with AOMEI Backupper:

Step1. Download free trial and run this backup tool for Windows Server. Within the intuitive interface, click “System Backup” under the Backup tab.

Step2. Doing System Backup, the program will select all the needed items for system restore automatically by default. Therefore, just click “Step 2” to select the destination location.

Step3. After specifying the destination path, click the “Schedule” button down there, and determine when you want the backup to run in the pop out window.

Step 4. After all settings are done, click “Start Backup” to get the backup running.

Since many people have wondered Why Windows Server Backup keep only one copy, AOMEI Backupper comes in to play and made the versions of backups more easier to understand, which also gives conveninence regarding of Windows Server restore.

Europe’s 12 best train trips: you’ve got to try at least

Europe’s 12 best train trips: you’ve got to try at least one of these Add to.

The Espace Vitalite Chenot spa is the only one outside of Europe. It uses an east-west mix of Chinese medicine and modern methods and is set in a luxe, traditional Turkish Hammam.

Mark Smith’s Man in Seat 61 website (seat61.com ) is crammed with trip-planning advice. His roster of recommended routes starts in the U.K.

“I suggest London to Fort William by Caledonian Sleeper. travelling direct from the Big Smoke to the wonderful West Highlands of Scotland. With your own cozy bedroom, you’ll be breakfasting in the lounge car as deer bound away from the train the next morning,” he says.

Then there’s the continent. “Some say the Bernina Express from Chur to Tirano is the best train ride though the Swiss Alps; others say the famous Glacier Express pips it at the post. You’ll just have to do both,” he suggests, adding that Venice to Munich via the Brenner Pass. Zurich to Milan via the Gotthard Pass and Paris to Nice. with its rocky coastline finale, are also major routes with scenic swathes.

But don’t forget Eastern Europe. “Take the train from Belgrade to Bar or Podgorica in Montenegro. There’s breathtaking mountain scenery, including a precarious crossing of the world’s highest railway viaduct. It’s a daylong ride costing just €20 – buy your tickets at the station.”

Rail-specializing travel journalist Jools Stone (railwaystays.com ) also favours Scotland, recommending the West Highland Line from Glasgow to Mallaig for “spectacular glens, lochs and all that gorgeously desolate boggy Highlands landscape.” Hopping to the continent, he suggests Norway’s fjord-studded Flam Railway and Switzerland’s Jungfrau Railway. which scales the Eiger to Europe’s highest train station.

Looking for some vintage railway decadence? “The Venice Simplon-Orient Express is the ultimate luxe train. Food and service is unsurpassed but it’s the stunning interiors – the Poirot factor – that swings it,” says Stone, adding that Austria’s lesser-known Majestic Imperator train is an equally lavish but lower-cost alternative.

Once you’ve found your dream route, it’s time for ticketing. Smith offers some choice advice for keeping budgets on track.

“Don’t assume you need a rail pass. I often see Canadians taking €29 train journeys with $800 rail passes. Europe’s long-distance trains often operate like budget airlines, with cheap fares for prebooking on a no-refunds, no-changes basis,” he says, adding that buying tickets three months ahead is the way to go.

But where to book?

“There isn’t a single website selling all routes and services at the cheapest prices. The golden rule is to book online at the websites of relevant operators. If a service is run jointly by neighbouring countries – as many are – go to the website of the national rail operator for the country where your journey starts: You’ll pay cheap advance-purchase fares, usually without booking fees. Most offer print-at-home or collect-at-station tickets.”

For many North Americans, Smith adds, the ease of European long-distance train travel can be surprising. “There’s no check in – apart from on Eurostar. You just walk off the streets and onto the train. If you’re on board at departure time, you go with it – if not, you get left behind.”

And while luggage allowances are generally less draconian than flying, Stone adds it makes sense to prepare. “Space will be limited in all but the most lavish cars. Have one luggage rack-friendly case for day-to-day essentials: change of clothes, a good book, a trusty corkscrew and your camera are all you really need.”

It’s this kind of relaxed approach – the foundation of great train journeys – that should also apply during planning. “Be realistic about how much ground you’ll cover,” Stone says. “Resist the temptation to hit every capital. And remember that high-speed doesn’t always mean better – slower journeys are often the most scenic.”

MSc International Finance – Key Features #master #finance, #one #year #master

MSc International
Finance

Key Features

The HEC Paris MSc in International Finance (MIF) program caters for highly-motivated top achieving graduates looking to succeed in a career in finance and consulting. The program has a strong analytical focus yet is accessible from either business and finance (business track) or economics, math, physics, engineering (accelerated track) backgrounds.

Flexible Curriculum

A ‘tailored-designed’ approach towards education is at the core when designing programs at HEC Paris. This is shown in at least two aspects of the HEC Paris MSc International Finance curriculum.

  • The courses taken during the first semester depend on your experience before joining HEC Paris. If you have already covered basic financial accounting, investment theory and corporate finance, you will start finance classes at advanced level (business track). If you have not done so, you will start at a more basic level with significantly more class hours at an accelerated pace to enable you to cover the same material by the end (accelerated track)
  • The second semester is comprised of more than 40 Concentration as well as free electives. Students must choose a concentration between Corporate Investment Financing Policy, Corporate Restructuring, Corporate Strategy, Financial Engineering, and Capital Markets. Then, they have access to more than 15 free electives.

Balance between theory and practice

The number of hours spent in the classroom by HEC MIF graduates significantly exceeds international standards. Around half of that time will be spent in front of world class researchers. imparting you state-of-the-art knowledge. The other half will be spent in front of top-level practitioners. The latter is one of the many ways in which the learning experience at HEC Paris differs to most and adds another dimension to teaching. We feel it is important to complement theoretical teaching by using top researchers and practitioners lectures to give our graduates that extra edge over graduates from other institutions. The more competitive the environment, the more important having that extra edge is.

Strong and cohesive peer group

Who your peers are matters: with regards to the quality of your learning experience, the perception of potential employers and for the value of your network after you graduate. This is why academic performance is at the top of our admissions criteria. However at HEC we look for more than just academic excellence: smart, ambitious individuals will underperform without adequate interaction. We put a strong emphasis on group interaction and encourage it in any way we can. For instance:

  • Honours are granted on the basis of absolute GPA and not class percentile to make sure that no HEC MIF student can benefit from the underperformance of one of his or her classmates
  • A study trip is organized in the 3rd week of the program with all HEC finance students participating and interacting in both professional and non-professional activities

Life Long Ties

At HEC Paris, we pride ourselves on the fact that ties built on campus between both professors and students continue after students graduate and become alumni. Our alumni get directly involved in guiding the new generation of HEC MIF students and to make sure they achieve the same success as past students. A few examples:

  • Career and job training workshops the first week of the program
  • More than 250 students take part in the formal networking event on the London study trip… and many more at the less formal Friday night HEC Finance pub crawl: a unique opportunity to gain privileged access to young professionals from bulge bracket banks!
  • Finance event organized the 4th week of September

International Diversity

With 29 different nationalities making up the class of 2016. the International Finance program is equally as enriching on a cultural level. Working alongside a diverse group of nationalities can be highly educational and rewarding and is a true highlight of the program for many. London is the main hub for HEC MIF graduates in terms of placements although we also have alumni working in Continental Europe, Asia, Americas, and the Middle East.

Tips for Cleaning Windows (windowcleaning)

Helping Nebraskans enhance their lives through research-based education.

Tips for Cleaning Windows

Submitted by Lorene Bartos, UNL Extension Educator

email this page to a friend

Windows, windows, windows, everywhere you look there are windows. Windows may appear to be clean but when the sun shines on them we get the true picture. Every little smudge, finger print or nose print shows. Window cleaning is a large task but can be simplified by using techniques and equipment made for doing windows.

A professional brass or stainless steel squeegee, available at janitorial supply stores is a helpful tool. Use a window cleaning solution, which contains ammonia, vinegar and/or a liquid dishwashing detergent. These work well if used sparingly. You may purchase these products or make them yourself. Too much chemical or soap solution causes streaks and leaves residue on the windows. Ammonia cuts heavy greasy soil and vinegar helps remove hard water spots.

Techniques for Cleaning Windows:

Wipe very dirty windows with a damp cloth. Don’t rub dirt because it will scratch the glass. A vacuum cleaner with an attachment will work for this job, too. With a clean sponge or cloth lightly wet the window. Don’t flood it! When using a squeegee, tilt at an angle to the glass, so only about one-inch of the rubber blade presses lightly against the top of the window glass. This will leave a dry area across the top of the window and stop drips from running down on your clean window. Wipe the blade of the squeegee with a damp cloth each time. A dry blade on dry glass will skip. Next place the squeegee horizontally in the dry area and pull down, lapping over the dry clean area each time. Continue until you have finished the window. Finish by wiping off the window sill. Windows can be cleaning from either side or from the top using this technique.

You may use a cloth or paper to clean also, use overlapping strokes so you cover all the window and don’t miss spots.

  • Don’t clean windows in direct sunlight – the window may dry too fast and streak.
  • Exterior windows should be first be washed with a hose or clean water to remove grease and grime.
  • Wash windows side to side on the inside and up to down on the outside. If there are streaks, you will know which side they are on.
  • Change wash and rinse waters often.
  • Vacuum screen to remove dust, etc
  • Outside screens can be scrubbed with warm water and rinsed with clean water. Allow to air dry.
  • Squeegees do not work on textured or stained glass windows.
  • Choose a “hard” paper towel (soft ones leave lint) or cotton cloths such as old t-shirt or socks.

The new micro-fiber cloths work well for cleaning windows. Follow the instructions for use of the cloths. When washing micro-fiber cloths or towels do not use fabric softener as it reduces the absorbency.

Homemade Cleaners for Windows:

  • Mix two tablespoons of ammonia OR white vinegar with two quarts or warm water.
  • Mix one-half cup ammonia, one pint of 70 percent rubbing alcohol and one teaspoon of liquid dishwashing detergent. Add enough water to make one gallon liquid.
  • Mix one tablespoon liquid dishwashing detergent with one quart water.

Choose a time when you feel good and energetic to do windows, you will feel better and the job will go faster.

Worldwide means anywhere in the world

Americas means USA, Canada, South America, Latin America, Hawaii and the Caribbean

Europe means all European countries, including UK

Middle East refers to the area from Syria to Yemen; Egypt to Iran

Asia generally means Asia and the Indian subcontinent. For some insurers this excludes Japan*

Pacific means the South West Pacific, New Zealand and Indonesia/Bali*. Select Pacific for domestic cruises in Australian waters

Essential Travel Apps, Part One: The Basics

Essential Travel Apps, Part Two

Staying Connected While Traveling

Get Our Best Travel Deals and Tips!

What’s Your Favorite Travel App?

A few months ago, a friend finally bit on buying the latest heavily hyped smartphone, and assigned the following signature line to all e-mails sent from the phone: “Sent from my Yeah I Got One Too.” His point wasn’t so much that he finally got with the fad, but that he got with the times — now that the world of information (and commerce) has gone mobile, there is no going back, and everyone finally seems to know it.

For travelers, the proliferation of apps and the mobile Web is all upside — except that in these early days, travel apps are flooding into the market in numbers too large to follow and with quality controls too variable to rely on. To help you figure out what works and what doesn’t, read ahead to part one of a two-part series of the most useful and interesting travel apps out there for multiple devices and platforms. This first round will look at what I call somewhat “essential, nuts and bolts” apps; following are 10 sections (plus one) for a total of 18 apps. In part two. we look at less essential but potentially very useful “accessory” apps.

Traveling with a Smartphone: Cut Costs Overseas

1. Itinerary Tracking: TripIt

Platforms: iPhone, Blackberry, Android, Web, mobile Web

Further, I could share my itinerary with just about anyone, including folks picking us up, folks dropping us off, co-workers, you name it. There is a lot more you can do with the app — the service is adding features and making improvements all the time, such as adding itineraries automatically from Gmail without forwarding, integrating with your calendar, and linking up with Facebook, LinkedIn and the like — but these go beyond the core reason to use the app, which is simply to have all your itinerary info and confirmation numbers in one supremely accessible and easily shared place.

Not everything works perfectly, though as info can be dependent on the airlines pushing the information out; for example, I received a text alert about a gate change about an hour after that information was posted on airport flight status screens, around the same time the boarding process started. The change required going to a different terminal; had I relied solely on the SMS alerts, I would have been a long way from my gate.

One important note: TripIt’s “lite”/free offering is missing some features many travelers might deem essential, such as real-time flight alerts sent to your phone, alternate flight options (for when your flight is canceled and you need to know another way home) and automatic sharing of trips — these are reserved for TripIt Pro accounts, which cost $49/year. If you travel a lot and can justify the expense, TripIt Pro is highly recommended.

TripIt’s most direct competitors are TripCase and TripDeck .TripDeck looks extremely promising and entirely free, but is currently available only for the iPhone, so I chose not to include a full review here.

2. Booking Engine Itineraries: Apps by Expedia, Travelocity and Orbitz

Platform: Varies

The Big Three travel booking sites all offer their own itinerary tracking apps, intended mostly for use with itineraries booked on that particular site. The upside to these proprietary apps (i.e. apps that are offered by the same folks from whom you are booking your travel) is that there are few or no format conflicts.

When I used TripAssist for itineraries booked on Expedia, it worked exceedingly well. Earlier this year Expedia updated TripAssist to accommodate non-Expedia itineraries as well (with some critical limitations, see below), and offers at no cost some of the functionality that TripIt grants only to paid subscribers, including free real-time flight alerts sent to your phone and/or e-mail, alternate flight info and SeatGuru seat maps.

The TripAssist app also offers an option to purchase travel, but when I tried it, it merely kicked me out to the Expedia mobile Web site. I guess this represents some level of convenience, but it’s not what most users might expect.

In my use I found it considerably less ravenously flexible than Tripit at gobbling up anything I sent it — in particular, for non-Expedia itineraries, I had to enter the full itinerary myself instead of forwarding whatever garbage e-mail I received from the booking service. It’s also unfortunate that the app is available for iPhone only at present — but the service is improving all the time. On my next trip, I am going to try using it exclusively to see if the free app can compete with TripIt’s Pro app — which will determine whether TripIt is worth the $49 or not.

The Travelocity and Orbitz apps work pretty much along the same lines; the Travelocity app is also available for the Android; Orbitz is also available for Blackberry.

3. and 4. Local Businesses and Restaurants: Yelp and Urbanspoon

Platforms: iPhone, Blackberry, Android, Web, mobile Web

While these two free apps are frequently mentioned in the same breath, and I combine them here, they do have very different feature sets and serve different constituents. I put them together here to emphasize the differences, not the similarities.

Urbanspoon is essentially a restaurant app. Its “Shake” view looks like a slot machine, with restaurant location on one wheel of the machine, type of food in the next and price in the third; you can either lock or unlock (really a filtering mechanism) all three very easily, making customized searches quick and intuitive. Of particular value are the “like it” percentage ratings, which serve as a rapid way of sizing up a restaurant without reading all the reviews (which aren’t bad either). Despite being a little gimmicky in action, the information Urbanspoon offers is solid and has rescued at least a couple of my evenings on the road this past year.

Yelp is a much wider ranging service, with a large number of categories beyond restaurants, including banks, gas stations, drug stores, home services, entertainment, pets services, local flavor and more. When I travel, I find that Yelp works best in “map” view, as you can expand or shrink the mapped area for services depending on how far afield you are willing to go. For example, when looking for a drug store while traveling, you probably want the closest store, not the best/most popular/best reviewed/etc. Yelp does a LOT more than find restaurants. Try the Monocle feature for a 21st-century freakout; when you hold your phone up and move it around, the business names show up superimposed on the live landscape in front of you. And a lot of Yelp’s features are actually useful rather than merely “cool.”

Both apps are highly recommended.

    • Destination

If you don’t know where you’re traveling to within the next 12 months, choose Worldwide to ensure you’re covered no matter where you go. If you’re travelling to multiple countries choose the region that you are visiting that is furthest away (excluding stopovers less than 48 hours). In most cases you will be covered for the closer regions as well. For example, if you choose Europe, you will also be covered in the Middle East, Asia and Pacific.

Australia means domestic travel within Australia only

*Note: Variances apply for Bali, Indonesia, Japan and Middle East. Check that your destination is covered once directed to your chosen insurer’s site.

Europe’s 12 best train trips: you’ve got to try at least

    #train travel europe
