And the Winner Is – Online Travel

E-commerce is alive and well online. Those who want solid evidence need look no further than the online travel industry.

As one of the few consumer industries that has established itself and shown measurable growth on the Internet, online travel is no longer focused on basic survival. Instead, the industry is concentrating on its quest for the ingredients of longevity: market share, saturation and profit.

Exhibit A is Travelocity (Nasdaq: TVLY), which last week reported fourth-quarter earnings of US$4.9 million or 9 cents per share. Last year at this time — long before terrorist attacks threatened to put serious dents in the online travel industry — Travelocity reported a Q4 loss of $2.4 million or 5 cents per share.

Reflecting the impact of terrorism on online travel, Travelocity reported that gross travel bookings dropped by $60 million from the year-ago period. But fewer sales apparently did not affect the company’s ability to boost its profits.

Now, there’s an equation that’s easy to live with.

Personal Power

So, what is it about the online travel industry that continues to allow it to emerge as the poster child for e-commerce hope?

Some might say it has everything to do with convenience and cost savings for consumers — and they would be partly correct.

But as one who has booked all of his own travel online for the past two years, I believe online travel’s pull goes deeper than that, especially since the September 11th terrorist attacks.

Booking travel online gives consumers a greater sense of control — especially compared with placing their trust in a travel agent or a faceless phone sales rep from an airline company.

Need for Speed

In addition to its ability to make consumers feel like they are in control of their own destiny, online travel caters to customers’ ongoing love of instant gratification — such as printing e-tickets minutes after purchasing them.

Airlines apparently sense this trend and are making moves to capitalize on it. Several airlines have begun charging extra fees for some paper tickets in an aggressive move to persuade consumers to go the e- ticket route.

Too much too soon? Not at all. According to Forrester Research. by 2003, 70 to 80 percent of all airline tickets will be issued electronically.

Watch and Learn

Another reason online travel continues to flourish is that it never gets too comfortable with its own progress.

Even now, with a growth spurt in full force, the top three players — Travelocity, Expedia (Nasdaq: EXPE) and Orbitz — continue to vie for position and innovate.

Expedia, for example, is expanding its operations to include passport and visa services. Users will be able to research travel access requirements for most countries on the Expedia site, then download necessary document applications and send them directly to Expedia’s new partner, Express Visa Service.

Travelers also can check the status of their travel documents at any time.

Redefining ‘Full Service’

The new economy calls for new definitions of old consumer services.

The online travel industry is doing it right by giving consumers total control over their itinerary and by providing self-directed and comprehensive trip planning.

For example, before a journey to London, a traveler can update or initiate travel documents, research promotional rates, book a flight, find hotel packages, buy a Eurail pass, arrange to be met at the airport by a driver and have a rental car waiting at the hotel.

3 Online Travel Sites You Shouldn t Miss

With so many travel booking websites out there, it’s sometimes hard to know which one to use. While many of us are familiar with larger, established sites like Expedia, Travelocity, and Kayak, there are a number of up and coming travel sites you may not be as familiar with.

Updated (9/15/2011):

One of the newest flight search engines to hit the radar is Google Flights . Launched in September, 2011, it hasn’t reached our favorites list yet, but it does look quite promising.

Google Flights is powered by technology Google acquired earlier in the year when it finalized the purchase of Cambridge, Mass. based ITA Software. While not substantially different from other sites that let you search for flights, it is one of the fastest we’ve used. The site uses location information from your computer to anticipate your departure airport and it pre-fills this info into the flight search form. (The site correctly guessed our airport when using a desktop computer near Washington, D.C. but oddly thought we’d be departing from New York when using an Android smartphone with GPS enabled at the same desk.) Start the search by entering a destination city (or choosing one from the list of popular destinations) and a list of flights is immediately displayed based on a 5-day trip beginning about 2 weeks from today. A clever calendar view displays a bar graph of prices by date and a scatter graph lets you move sliders to find the best balance of price and flying time. Clever, albeit a bit complicated.

Once you’ve found the flight you want, the site takes you to the website of your chosen airline and pre-fills the info about your selected flight to help speed your purchase — though this feature didn’t work for some airlines. As with most Google products, expect a series of rapid improvements and enhancements in the near future as the product matures.

And now, for our current favorite travel booking websites:

This “hip” site has a clean, intuitive design which makes it a breeze to search for a flight or hotel. A simple form on the homepage lets you enter your desired flight or hotel information, while the HipMunk mascot, a travel-ready chipmunk, smiles at you. Results are displayed chronologically in a novel Gantt-chart format that makes it easy to zero in on the departure and arrival times. (You can also sort by price, stops, departure time, arrival time, or duration.) Our favorite sorting criteria, which is also the default, is the “Agony” option—which combines price, duration and number of stops into a single criteria.

A tab at the bottom right, which also appears on the home page, offers the option of live help. The hotel search on HipMunk gives you the option to select a hotel based on what you want near you—whether that be shopping, food or nightlife. The results are displayed on a map with each hotel represented by a dot, so you can easily see which hotels are nearest your chosen activity.

Momondo is another easy new way to start your travel plans. Taking a slightly different approach, Momondo searches 800+ travel sites to help you find and compare flights, hotels, and car rentals. Choose your best option and get linked to the airline or travel agency that offers that deal.  Enter your preferred dates right on the homepage, and a list of flight options shows up very quickly.

You can narrow your results by the number of stops, preferred airlines, layover cities or price. The beauty of Momondo is how deep it goes pulling the best deals for you—ones you may have spent hours looking for and still not found. Its search engine moves fast, and moves through it all, to find you your best travel options.

Matrix is a refreshing take on the travel booking site. Its Spartan design may be a turn-off for some but we like that the site is uncluttered and free of advertisements. (Matrix is the software that powers many of the larger travel sites including CheapTickets and Orbitz.) In lieu of fancy design, the folks at Matrix have clearly spent their time refining the ways to shop for your travel plans. Complete your initial search, which requires a bit more information than HipMunk and Momondo, such as the option to choose which cabin you prefer, and your search results appear.

The results promise the best deals, but the real fun begins once you choose an option that may work. Click on your chosen option, and it takes you to another page where you can view events and tours that are happening during your trip.

The Bottom Line

Despite different features these sites offer, many of us still use travel sites primarily to search for the lowest price. To see how these sites stacked up against each other and the competition, we priced three sample trips: Raleigh-Durham to Las Vegas, Denver to Orlando, and Phoenix to Chicago.

For all three trips, the prices were the same across all the sites—including Expedia and Travelocity. We also like that the airfare on these three sites included all the fees and tariffs in the total so you see the price you’ll actually pay.

Hilton Scores a Victory Over Online Booking Sites, and What It Means for How Travel Will Be Booked

United Airlines used to offer last minute e-fares on their website, but stopped because they ran afoul of agreements with computer reservation systems to always display the best available fares through those sites.

Paying the computer reservation systems is costly, it s cheaper when airlines sell to you directly, so they used to offer bonus miles for doing so. And paying the online travel agencies is costlier still. Even though few airlines base commissions any longer (although Alitalia just re-introduced 1% commissions in Italy) they do pay based on volume.

Airlines have long paid less to the online travel sites than hotels. So hotels have gone to greater lengths than airlines in trying to get customers to book direct. Generally when you book on Expedia you still earn frequent flyer miles for your flights, and are eligible for elite status accrual and elite benefits. (Although it may not always be as clear what restrictions apply to the fares you re buying.)

Hotels on the other hand have:

  • Restricted points-earning (Hilton s official policy is no points at all, even for incidentals during your stay, when booking through a third party)
  • Restricted status-earning (major chains won t let your stay booked through most third parties count towards gaining or retaining status)

  • Restricted elite status benefits (Though Hyatt and Marriott generally honor elite status on third party bookings, other major chains do not)
  • During periods with hotel occupancy low, the OTAs had the greatest leverage. The major chain hotels were paying over 20% commissions, perhaps 25%, and independent hotels easily paid 40%.

    But those commissions have been falling. With hotels full they have a stronger bargaining hand. They re able to pay lower commissions, and negotiate other favorable terms.

    Hilton reports that it has successfully concluded better deals.

    [Hilton CEO Chris] Nassetta said Hilton Worldwide won the right to lower the commissions it pays to online travel agencies such as Expedia and Booking.com.

    Hilton Worldwide managed to eliminate last-room availability clauses and won the right to offer preferential pricing — lower rates than it gives to online travel agencies — to certain members of the hotel chain’s loyalty program, Nassetta said.

    “We are done with all of our OTA negotiations, and we achieved our goals in every one of those pillars,” Nassetta said.

    This likely explains Hilton testing discounts for HHonors members since they don t have to offer those same rates through online booking sites and can use those to incentive lower direct booking expenses.

    Airlines, too, continually squabble with the online sites and computer reservation systems over how their fares are distributed. Lufthansa is currently imposing an extra charge for tickets through these systems, which makes them less competitive. It s hard to sort out the effect it has had on the airline, because their sales have also been affected by strikes. Airlines want online travel sites to work through their own, less expensive, direct channels. And they want everyone selling their ancillary products, at the lowest cost to the carrier.

    When we see Expedia buy Orbitz after buying Travelocity we shouldn t just think of them as making consumer unfriendly moves, we should think of them as:

    1. Trying to preserve some of their leverage against travel providers who are eroding their margins.
  • Making defensive moves in anticipation of Google disrupting their business model.
  • That isn t to say that consolidation in the online booking industry is consumer-friendly. And consumer experiences vary. But online travel agency sites are hardly gaining market power .

    Steps to Be a Coding Specialist

    What do I need to do to be a certified coding specialist?

    Step 1: Pursue a Postsecondary Education in Medical Billing and Coding

    Many coding positions seek individuals with an associate’s degree in medical billing and coding. Courses provide knowledge in medical terminology, reimbursement methods, pathophysiology and commonly used coding systems, including CPT and ICD-9. Students are also taught the details of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) as well.

    Step 2: Gain Work Experience

    While work experience is not a requirement to become certified, obtaining 2-3 years of work experience is also highly recommended. Hospitals, clinics, physicians’ offices and insurance companies are common work environments for medical coders. Individuals enrolled in a degree program also have the opportunity to enroll in an internship to gain hands-on training and some recommended work experience.

    Step 3: Pursue Certification

    The AHIMA oversees the certification exam for aspiring coding specialists. It offers several certification designations, including the Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) and the Certified Coding Specialist-Physician-based (CCS-P). The CCS is geared towards hospital-based coding professionals. Both tests consist of two parts, including multiple-choice questions and patient-case scenarios for medical coding. Both the CCS and the CCS-P exams test on ICD-9 and CPT coding systems. The CCS-P also includes testing on the Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS).

    Step 4: Take Continuing Education Courses and Renew Certification

    The BLS reported that health information technicians (which include certified coding technicians) need to regularly renew their certification and take continuing education classes. The AHIMA offers seminars, conferences and webinars that provide beneficial experiences for certified coding specialists and meet these requirements. CCSs and CCS-Ps must complete at least 30 continuing education units (CEUs) like these every certification cycle, as well as pay a renewal fee. CEUs are completed through college courses.

    Step 5: Consider Pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree

    Coding specialists looking to pursue promotional opportunities may need a bachelor’s degree in health administration or a related field, so coding specialists should keep that option open to them if they wish to advance.

    Certified coding specialists have associate’s degrees and certification. They use medical software programs while overseeing and updating patient records, and they earn a median annual salary of $37,110.

    Highlights:

    • 122-125 semester hour degree program
    • 30 hours of coursework in human behavior, practice, research, and policy

    A bachelor of social work combines liberal arts with social work classes to prepare individuals for entry into direct human service professional positions.

    BSW students learn to work collaboratively in a variety of settings, and learn skills including assessment, interviewing, service planning, case management, crisis intervention, problem solving, program evaluation, community outreach, community organizing, advocacy, research and networking. Students receive the training needed to seek an exciting professional career and land employment in many different public and private work settings.

    All students begin the program as pre-social work majors and complete requirements in language arts, social and behavioral sciences, math and natural sciences, and the humanities.

    After these requirements, eligible students may apply to the upper-division professional sequence as social work majors. Admitted students take social work courses and complete a supervised internship (480 clock hours) in a social services agency in the last semester.

    Social work students take advantage of all the university-wide and community activities, and at the same time enjoy the benefits of a small program which provides a great deal of personal attention. There are approximately 300 undergraduate students enrolled in the School of Social Work (see quick facts, pdf ). Class sizes are usually between 25-35 students; and the seminar that accompanies the students’ field practicum has 15-20 students.

    The school enjoys one of the most diverse faculty, staff and student bodies at the university. The school also has an active student council that holds a variety of academic, social, and social services-related activities each year.

    All classes are conducted at the School of Social Work. The Learning Resource Center (LRC) includes a reference library, study space, multimedia and audio-visual laboratories, and a computer lab.     A Brief Overview of Higher Education in Nevada

    In 2013, the National Center for Education Statistics reported that Nevada had 27 degree-granting institutions, broken down as follows: 7 public schools, 3 nonprofits and 17 for-profits. The total number of bachelor s degrees awarded in the 12- 13 school year at these schools was: 6,975 at public schools, 302 at private nonprofits and 233 at private for-profits.

    Tuition-wise, the College Board found that, in the 15- 16 school year, the average in-state tuition and fees for four-year public schools was $6,670, while the out-of-state average was $20,490, increasing by only 1% over the last last five years.

    As for the state s financial aid efforts, the National Association of State Student Grant Aid Programs (NASSGAP) reported that Nevada awarded $10.39 million in need-based grants and $23.86 million in non-need grants for the 13- 14 school year. Grants make up 7% of the state s total fiscal support for higher education. Over the same year, Nevada awarded $17.9 million in tuition waivers. The Center on Budget and Policies Priorities reported that from 13 to 14 there was a 4.1% increase ($301) in state spending per student in Nevada.

    Tuition at Nevada schools is competitive, with a particularly low in-state rate, and the state does an excellent job of supporting its students, with weight grants and an excellent tuition waiver program. To boot, the state government has managed stable growth in the amount of spending it allots for postsecondary students.

NSHE has seen total enrollment in distance courses increasing by over 438% across an eight year period starting in 2001; results seem to indicate such steady growth will continue over the next few years. It s estimated that nearly one-third of all enrollments at NSHE schools are in distance learning courses.

    Nevada is also part of the SARA regional education compact known as the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE). The WICHE Internet Course Exchange (ICE) offers opportunities for state residents, through their local college or university, to access high quality distance programs offered at out-of-state WICHE institutions, often at greatly reduced rates.

    This online course, “Categorical Data Analysis” will focus on a logistic regression approach for the analysis of contingency table data, where the cell entries represent counts that are cross-tabulated using categorical variables. Tests for (conditional) independence are discussed in the context of odds-ratios and relative risks, for both two-way and three-way data tables. After the ground work is laid for logistic regression models for binomial responses, more complex data structure will be introduced, e.g. those having more categorical variables or even continuous covariates. As a broad view is taken through the generalized linear model framework, opportunity is taken to also present a few model variations, such as Probit regression for binomial responses and Poisson regression for count data. Model checking (residuals, goodness-of-fit), model inference (testing, confidence intervals), model interpretation (odds-ratios, EL50s), and model selection (AIC, automatic procedures, testing reduced models) are all detailed. The focus of this course will remain laser sharp on logistic regression modeling and on the corresponding interpretation of these models, rather than the theory behind them.

    This course may be taken individually (one-off) or as part of a certificate program.

    Who Should Take This Course:
    Anyone who needs to analyze data in which the response is in yes/no or categorical form. Market researchers, medical researchers, surveyors, those who study education assessment data, quality control specialists, life scientists, environmental scientists, ecologists.

    Organization of the Course:

    This course takes place online at the Institute for 4 weeks. During each course week, you participate at times of your own choosing – there are no set times when you must be online. Course participants will be given access to a private discussion board. In class discussions led by the instructor, you can post questions, seek clarification, and interact with your fellow students and the instructor.

    At the beginning of each week, you receive the relevant material, in addition to answers to exercises from the previous session. During the week, you are expected to go over the course materials, work through exercises, and submit answers. Discussion among participants is encouraged. The instructor will provide answers and comments, and at the end of the week, you will receive individual feedback on your homework answers.

    Time Requirement :
    About 15 hours per week, at times of your choosing.

    Options for Credit and Recognition:
    Students come to the Institute for a variety of reasons. As you begin the course, you will be asked to specify your category:

    1. No credit – You may be interested only in learning the material presented, and not be concerned with grades or a record of completion.
    2. Certificate – You may be enrolled in PASS (Programs in Analytics and Statistical Studies) that requires demonstration of proficiency in the subject, in which case your work will be assessed for a grade.
    3. CEUs and/or proof of completion – You may require a “Record of Course Completion,” along with professional development credit in the form of Continuing Education Units (CEU’s).     Ready to compare?

    The good news is that since April 2016, the introduction of a new Personal Savings Allowance (PSA) has meant that basic-rate taxpayers can earn £1,000 of savings interest without the taxman taking a slice, and higher rate taxpayers can earn £500. Additional rate taxpayers are not eligible for a PSA.

    And the fact you can shelter up to £20,000 from the taxman in cash through an Individual Savings Account (ISA) this tax year is another godsend – as you get to keep every penny of the interest you earn.

    Here’s our guide to the best high interest accounts that you can use to grow your savings pot.

    Cash ISAs

    Cash-ISAs allow you to earn interest tax-free so, it makes sense to max out your ISA allowance before stashing money into a standard savings account.

    Since July 1, 2014 you have been able to hold all of your ISA allowance in cash. ISAs have become even more flexible since April 6, 2016. If you hold cash in an either an investment, cash, or Innovative Finance ISA, you can take this cash out of your account and put it back in within the same tax year without this affecting your annual allowance. Not all ISA providers may offer this flexibility, so check with yours before withdrawing any money.

    The difference between the best and the worst savings accounts is significant

    Current accounts

    If you have already used up your ISA allowance, you might think a standard savings account is the next best place for your nest egg.

    But these days, the best interest rates can actually be found on some current accounts. Some pay up to 5.00% on smaller balances of a couple of thousand, or 3.00% on balances of up to £20,000.

    You usually have to switch your current account completely to benefit from these deals, but the introduction of the Current Account Switch Service in September 2013, means the process is now hassle-free and can be carried out in seven working days.

    Easy access accounts

    Also known as no-notice accounts, easy access deals give you instant access to your cash whenever you want it. That makes them a great home for emergency cash that you can call on to pay for a broken boiler or car repairs, for example.

    The bad news is that interest rates on easy access accounts are generally pretty low – particularly if you don’t shop around for the best deal.

    Better-than-average rates are usually reserved for internet-only accounts, while some employ introductory bonuses to boost the advertised rate – but which run out after the first 12 month.

    Even if there isn’t a bonus, rates tend to be variable so keep a close eye on what the account is paying and switch deals if it’s no longer any good.

    Some accounts that call themselves easy access may also limit the number of withdrawals you can make each year without losing interest – so check this too.

    Notice accounts

    With notice accounts, you generally have to wait between 30 and 120 days to withdraw your money. This means they won’t be suitable if you need access to your cash in a hurry – as the terms state you will lose interest if an emergency withdrawal is made.

    While notice accounts tend to offer higher interest rates than those that provide instant access to your money, this isn’t always the case – so check out easy access rates too before applying.

    And as most easy access accounts have variable, rather than fixed, rates, it’s just as important to monitor your returns and switch if the deal is no longer competitive.

    Regular savings accounts

    Regular savings accounts, which require a set monthly payment – often between £25 and £300 – are a great option for building up savings.

    But while rates are higher, the overall benefits are limited as you will only earn interest on the amount in the account as it builds up. You will also be penalised for missing a payment and you won’t have access to your money for the typical12-month term.

    Fixed-rate bonds

    Fixed-rate bonds are savings accounts that offer a fixed interest rate on your cash for a set period of time, say between one and five years.

    The pay-off for giving up access to your money by paying into an account of this kind is that you should receive a higher rate than you will on an easy access or notice account.

    And, generally speaking, the longer you’re prepared to lock your cash away for, the higher your return will be.

    You will have to pay a penalty should you need to access your money within the term, though.

    As most fixed-rate bonds do not allow you to add to your balance, they are also only suitable for people with a lump sum to invest.

    BLOOMINGTON, MINNESOTA — I graduated high school in 2005 where I was an AP and honor roll student. Of course, I went straight into college. However, my father came down with cancer and I moved back home after about a few years. After his fight, he ended up losing his battle. Meanwhile, I lost my personal cheerleader. So, I didn’t have the motivation to go back to school, and I joined the work force.

    Despite not having a college education, I climbed the corporate ladder very quickly no matter where I worked. Finally, I started working for a company where I had the time to not only enjoy with my social life but extra time I knew I could use to go back to school. After speaking with several different colleges, Rasmussen College is the only, and I mean only one, college that did not harass me like I was trying to purchase a car. When I said I needed a few months to think about it, they didn’t even contact me. I had told the same thing to another college, but I ended up in their automated dialer system.

    Finally, I ended up speaking with an enrollment representative and getting enrolling as a student of Rasmussen College despite all the bad reviews that I read, which I am glad I did. Not only does their staff have industry experience in the courses they are teaching, they accept the fact their students may have industry experience as well, and welcome it.

    Some professors in my first years of college would completely disregard the students’ experience. However, all of my professors have accepted I have experience beyond the classroom, and in some instances asked me to speak to the class about it. Granted, I have held back at times, because I know there is a learning process which needs to take place in order to get a good foundation.

    In any case, I happened to see this website on Google and felt I needed to tell everyone about my great experience with Rasmussen College since there are so many bad reviews. In all honesty, I read the bad reviews, know the team at Rasmussen College, and can’t help but think, why didn’t you contact them.

    I have missed assignments at times due to my company requiring I spend extra time on projects, which my professors have only asked that my supervisor notify them and have accepted my work without penalty. If you’re searching for an online experience to truly push your boundaries and make you a better professional in your field, I highly recommend Rasmussen.

    ROMEOVILLE, ILLINOIS — This was absolutely the worst decision of my life to go here. At first going in the school for the first time it did seem kind of like a car salesman trying sell me a car or an army recruiter trying to get me to enlist and I should have recognized that and walked away but It was convenient that I can take all of my classes online which I couldn’t do at my local junior college and I wouldn’t have had to wait weeks to meet with someone like at the junior college which now I look back and I wish I would have been more patient.

    As soon as I signed everything and my financial aid went through that’s when all their talk about “We’re here for you to achieve” went out the window and I could not reach my career counselor and he would never return my messages. The school goes by quarters not semesters. As for the first quarter I took two classes and aced them both and was even on the dean’s list but at the beginning of the second quarter I had a couple of personal family issues that I was dealing with that was interfering with me being able to do my school work.

    After falling behind I was finally able to get ahold of my career counselor after several calls and explained the situation in depth to him in hopes that he would understand and I thought he did. He said he realizes that I’m trying to make an effort and that they would have to withdraw me this quarter but I could come back for the next quarter. So between the end of that quarter and the beginning of the next I spent my time again trying to get ahold of my career counselor with no success. I even tried going up to the school where I was informed that he was on vacation in Las Vegas.

    So the next quarter begins with me still trying to get a hold of my career counselor. I figured if I could get ahold of him I could just start the quarter late and make up the work. Finally after calling several times the secretary at the front desk put me on hold where she would usually tell me that my counselor wasn’t in so I figured finally I’ll get some answers and be able to attend school again but I was wrong – she ended up transferring the call to the financial aid department and the person answering the phone I believe was the head of financial aid. I can’t recall.

    The secretary must have told her who was on the phone because the person already knew my name and immediately started discussing a repayment plan for me. I told her the reason I was calling was to get back into school and that I talked to my career counselor and he said that was OK. She ended up saying it was too late and I would have repay in order to attend school.

    I proceeded to tell her that I am unemployed and I can’t afford it. I then told her of the situation that led me to get withdrawn from school which was very personal to me and something I didn’t want to discuss but did anyway in hopes she would understand. Her response to me was that it wasn’t her problem and when can she be expecting a payment from me I then hung up the phone.

    Now it’s fairly easy to communicate with someone at the college. They call my phone, email me, and even send letters in the mail saying that they will either take my tax refund or garnish my wages which is kind of hard to do since I’m unemployed. The letter also states that they could sue me which is also hard to do seeing that I don’t own any assets – no vehicle or house and doesn’t look like I ever will thanks to Rasmussen since I have no experience in anything and no education that’s why it’s practically impossible to find a job and also the reason why I wanted to go to college in the first place.

    Now I can’t go back until I pay back the loan. I owe almost seven thousand dollars for a quarter and a half of school. Maybe one day I can finally get a job as fry cook or janitor or even a bag person and then they can garnish those wages. Now I know I actually don’t owe Rasmussen. I owe the government but Rasmussen didn’t care about me. All they wanted was the money and they made no attempt to help me get back to school.

    I write this review so maybe it helps someone not make the same horrible mistake I made and if you don’t believe me check it out for yourself and see if they’re not like a car salesman or army recruiter and also look at what they charge. It’s almost double a credit hour compared to a junior college.

    Hungry for Money at Rasmussen College

    BURR RIDGE, ILLINOIS — I enrolled at Rasmussen College Fort Myers Florida, 9160 Forum Corporate Pkwy Fort Myers, FL 33905 (239) 477-2100 over the summer of 2010 in their Paralegal Studies Program. I believe I was scheduled to start school somewhere the first week of July 2010. During the course of the commotion of starting school I find out from my doctor I had to have a procedure done on my lower back and that it would interfere with me executing my studies effectively so I chose to dis-enroll from school within the allotted time frame without penalties.

    Now the problem is the text books. Now take to mind I started the first week of school so I had to open my text books which came shrink wrapped, which I had to return those text books to the school which I did and received a receipt for such said text books and it was noted they were taken out of the shrink wrap which is logical because I had to use them but they are in the very same new condition. No marks in them, they were barely looked at. No bent pages etc. Now I understand the economy is horrible but on the other hand it’s outrageously pathetic that the school is trying to strong arm me into giving them a 100.00 dollars to re-shrink wrap the books.

    How feeble minded are they that they think I’m going to pay them 100.00 dollars to re-shrink wrap the text books. They are going to re-shrink wrap them and re-sell them to another student. I didn’t fall out of the coconut tree the other day and I am not a fool. What are your thoughts or opinions? Thank you. Oh! By the way, Rasmussen sent me on a goose chase by directing me to a department that doesn’t handle the situation. Nice try Rasmussen College.
