Hilton Scores a Victory Over Online Booking Sites, and What It

Hilton Scores a Victory Over Online Booking Sites, and What It Means for How Travel Will Be Booked

by Gary Leff on December 1, 2015

United Airlines used to offer last minute e-fares on their website, but stopped because they ran afoul of agreements with computer reservation systems to always display the best available fares through those sites.

Paying the computer reservation systems is costly, it s cheaper when airlines sell to you directly, so they used to offer bonus miles for doing so. And paying the online travel agencies is costlier still. Even though few airlines base commissions any longer (although Alitalia just re-introduced 1% commissions in Italy) they do pay based on volume.

Airlines have long paid less to the online travel sites than hotels. So hotels have gone to greater lengths than airlines in trying to get customers to book direct. Generally when you book on Expedia you still earn frequent flyer miles for your flights, and are eligible for elite status accrual and elite benefits. (Although it may not always be as clear what restrictions apply to the fares you re buying.)

Hotels on the other hand have:

  • Restricted points-earning (Hilton s official policy is no points at all, even for incidentals during your stay, when booking through a third party)
  • Restricted status-earning (major chains won t let your stay booked through most third parties count towards gaining or retaining status)

  • Restricted elite status benefits (Though Hyatt and Marriott generally honor elite status on third party bookings, other major chains do not)
  • During periods with hotel occupancy low, the OTAs had the greatest leverage. The major chain hotels were paying over 20% commissions, perhaps 25%, and independent hotels easily paid 40%.

But those commissions have been falling. With hotels full they have a stronger bargaining hand. They re able to pay lower commissions, and negotiate other favorable terms.

Hilton reports that it has successfully concluded better deals.

[Hilton CEO Chris] Nassetta said Hilton Worldwide won the right to lower the commissions it pays to online travel agencies such as Expedia and Booking.com.

Hilton Worldwide managed to eliminate last-room availability clauses and won the right to offer preferential pricing — lower rates than it gives to online travel agencies — to certain members of the hotel chain’s loyalty program, Nassetta said.

“We are done with all of our OTA negotiations, and we achieved our goals in every one of those pillars,” Nassetta said.

This likely explains Hilton testing discounts for HHonors members since they don t have to offer those same rates through online booking sites and can use those to incentive lower direct booking expenses.

Airlines, too, continually squabble with the online sites and computer reservation systems over how their fares are distributed. Lufthansa is currently imposing an extra charge for tickets through these systems, which makes them less competitive. It s hard to sort out the effect it has had on the airline, because their sales have also been affected by strikes. Airlines want online travel sites to work through their own, less expensive, direct channels. And they want everyone selling their ancillary products, at the lowest cost to the carrier.

When we see Expedia buy Orbitz after buying Travelocity we shouldn t just think of them as making consumer unfriendly moves, we should think of them as:

    1. Trying to preserve some of their leverage against travel providers who are eroding their margins.
  • Making defensive moves in anticipation of Google disrupting their business model.
  • That isn t to say that consolidation in the online booking industry is consumer-friendly. And consumer experiences vary. But online travel agency sites are hardly gaining market power .

More From View from the Wing

    security test

Due to the unsafe design of some email programs, email viruses now are able to infect computer systems just by email. Once infected, a computer system can spread the virus further by sending malicious emails to other systems without any human interference. Well designed email programs do not display these vulnerabilities. Unfortunately, commercial success is not related to good design.
Virus scanners (please see above) can offer good protection against email viruses by scanning each incoming mail, but will never protect against 100% of all attacks, since it is impossible to know and detect each and every possible type of virus.
Therefore, even when you have a real-time virus scanner, it is wise to get some information on the vulnerabilities and strengths of your email program. The GFI site tests your email program by sending you number of emails that probe your mail system.

Some Outlook and Outlook express versions are very vulnerable to virus attacks through email. Several versions of Outlook and Outlook Express can execute malicious scripts or programs hidden inside emails sent to you without warning. What is Voice over IP? The Basics #voice #over #ip #solutions

    #

What is Voice over IP? The Basics

What is voice over IP? How is it different from unified communications? And how can it help your small business?

    What is Voice over IP?

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology lets you use the Internet to make and receive telephone calls.

What is Voice over IP. The Range of Services

VoIP is available in a wide range of services. Some basic, free VoIP services require all parties to be at their computers to make or receive calls. Others let you call from a traditional telephone handset or even a cell phone to any other phone.

What is Voice over IP. Equipment

For VoIP, you need a broadband Internet connection, plus a traditional phone and an adapter; a VoIP-enabled phone; or VoIP software on your computer.

What is Voice over IP. Security and Service Quality

Most consumer VoIP services use the Internet for phone calls. But many small businesses are using VoIP and unified communications on their private networks. That’s because private networks provide stronger security and service quality than the public Internet.

What is Voice over IP. Versus Unified Communications

Unified communications systems offer more features and benefits than VoIP, yet many are still priced for small businesses. Unified communications brings together all forms of communication regardless of location, time or device. Faxes, e-mail, and voicemail are all delivered to a single inbox. You can integrate your phone and customer relationship management (CRM) systems to improve your customer service, and much more.

What is Voice over IP. The Benefits

VoIP and unified communications enable you to:

    • Reduce travel and training costs, thanks to web and video conferencing
    • Easily grow your phone system as needed
    • Have one phone number ring simultaneously on multiple devices, helping employees stay connected to each other and to customers
    • Reduce your phone charges
    • Have a single network for voice and data, simplifying management and reducing costs
    • Access your phone system’s features at home or at client offices, in airports and hotels—anywhere you’ve got a broadband connection

2017 MLB Draft Slots And Bonus Pools #over #draft

    #

2017 MLB Draft Slots And Bonus Pools

The Twins will have the first pick in the 2017 draft and the largest bonus pool, giving them a financial advantage over every other team. But that advantage is significantly less than it has been in past years.

After Major League Baseball decided to compress the difference between slots at the top of the draft in the latest Collective Bargaining Agreement, the Twins’ top draft slot is set at $7,770,700, according to the final official slots that were recently sent to all 30 major league teams.

The Twins’ allotment is roughly $1.25 million less than what the Phillies were slotted for the top pick in last year’s draft. The Reds’ second pick ($7,193,200) is a $569,700 reduction from last year. But at the Padres’ third pick, the slot allotment is actually $157,000 higher than last year’s. Every pick from third to 60th is actually a higher allotment than last year before it switches over again, with lower slots throughout the rest of the top 10 rounds.

This adjustment will change the incentives and the bargaining power at the top of the draft. The Astros worked a deal with Carlos Correa at the top of the 2012 draft (the first under the new slotting rules) and used the savings on his deal to land Lance McCullers and Rio Ruiz to slot-busting deals later on in the draft. In the five drafts held under the current rules, only once has the top pick in the draft received the largest bonus (Dansby Swanson in 2015).

And no player has come close to receiving the full value of the first pick in those five years. The signing bonus record under the current system is the $6,708,400 Kris Bryant received as the second pick in the 2013 draft. Carlos Rodon (third pick, 2014) is the only other player to receive more than $6.5 million under the current rules, even though the slot for the top spot has been at $7.2 million or more in each of the past five drafts.

Teams are assuredly delving deep into game theory to figure out what is the best approach to using the new slots, but there are some obvious adjustments to come. For one, the teams picking at the top have much less leverage than they had under the slots of previous years. Last year, the team picking at the top had a nearly $2 million advantage over the team picking second in last year’s draft and a massive $4.3 million advantage over the team picking fourth.

That massive difference meant a player who was in the mix to go 1-1 in recent years knew that if he turned down the offer at No. 1 and fell just a few spots to fourth or fifth, he was assured of getting significantly less money, even if the team picking No. 1 offered him a deal well below slot. Since these rules began in 2012, no player taken after the third pick has landed a deal of $5 million or more–Riley Pint’s $4.8 million bonus as the fourth pick in 2016 and Kohl Stewart’s $4.544 million as the fourth pick in 2013 are the only players taken fourth or later to land a bonus larger than $4.5 million.

But in the top three picks, 12 of the 14 players who have signed from 2012 to 2016 have landed bonuses of $4.8 million or more. So under the slots until this year, there was a massive incentive to work out a deal in the top three picks.

This year, there’s much less danger financially for a player who slides from the top pick to even sixth or seventh. Last year, the Brewers had only $4,382,200 slotted for the fifth pick. This year, the Diamondbacks could offer $5 million to a player they pick at pick seven without going above their slot.

The Twins have the largest total allotment with $14,156,800 but the Reds aren’t far behind at $13,658,400. The Cardinals have the smallest allotment ($2,176,000) after they forfeited their first pick to sign free agent Dexter Fowler and then were ordered to send their second-round pick (pick 56) and their supplemental second round pick (pick 75) to the Astros as penalty for former scouting director Chris Correa’s hacking into the Astros’ database. St. Louis’ first pick is not until pick 94.

What is VoIP (voice over IP)? Definition from #voice #over #ip

    #

    VoIP (voice over IP)

VoIP (voice over IP) is the transmission of voice and multimedia content over Internet Protocol (IP ) networks. VoIP is enabled by a group of technologies and methodologies used to deliver voice communications over the internet, enterprise local area networks or wide area networks .

WebRTC continued its gradual change in 2016 – but where is it going from here? Find out in this expert guide, and even test what you know in a 10-question WebRTC architecture quiz.

VoIP historically referred to using IP to connect private branch exchanges (PBXs ), but the term is now used interchangeable with IP telephony .

    How does VoIP work?

VoIP encapsulates audio via a codec into data packets, transmits them across an IP network and unencapsulates them back into audio at the other end of the connection. VoIP endpoints include dedicated desktop VoIP phones. softphone applications running on PCs and mobile devices, and WebRTC -enabled browsers.

By eliminating the use of circuit-switched networks for voice, VoIP reduces network infrastructure costs, enables providers to deliver voice services over their broadband and private networks, and allows enterprises to operate a single voice and data network. VoIP also piggy-backs on the resiliency of IP-based networks by enabling fast failover around outages and redundant communications between endpoints and networks.

    VoIP protocols and standards

VoIP endpoints typically use International Telecommunication Union (ITU) standard codecs, such as G.711. which is the standard for transmitting uncompressed packets, or G.729. which is the standard for compressed packets. Many equipment vendors also use their own proprietary codecs. Voice quality may suffer when compression is used, but compression reduces bandwidth requirements. VoIP typically supports non-voice communications via the ITU T.38 protocol for sending faxes over a VoIP or IP network in real time.

Once voice is encapsulated onto IP, it is typically transmitted via the real-time transport protocol or through its encrypted variant, secure real-time transport protocol. The Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is most often used for signaling that is necessary to create, maintain and end calls. Within enterprise or private networks, quality of service is typically used to prioritize voice traffic over non-latency -sensitive applications to ensure acceptable voice quality.

Additional components of a typical VoIP system include the following: an IP-PBX to manage user phone numbers; devices; features and clients; gateways to connect networks and provide failover or local survivability in the event of a network outage; and session border controllers to provide security, call-policy management and network connections. A VoIP system can also include location-tracking databases for E911 (enhanced 911) call routing, and management platforms to collect call-performance statistics for reactive and proactive voice-quality management.

Singles Holidays for over 50 s

The average age of guests on any of our solo holidays tends to be between 35 and 65, though we accept people from 25 onwards with no upper limit. Although we don t have trips that are singles holidays for over 50s exclusively, we believe that anybody looking for a trip that s perfect for their age will find one with us. Our groups are welcoming, friendly, and you ll always be able to find something to do, whether it s the organised activity or not.

Just because you re not with people of exactly the same age as you, it doesn t mean you won t be part of a group of like-minded individuals. By selecting one of our holidays and electing to travel on your own, you are already putting yourself in a group of people with a very definite shared interest, and that is the perfect way to form a new friendship. If you are worried that you won t enjoy the company, why not try out one of our single night trips? It s a great way for you to come along and mingle with a mix of people, as these trips are popular with first-timers and old-hands alike. You ll also have a delicious meal, a night in a lovely hotel and, if you feel like it, a dance!

Or you could try one of our European city breaks. These trips take place over a weekend so you get more of a taste of what Friendship Travel singles holidays are like, and can find out why we think travelling with a mixed age group is much more fun than singles holidays for over 50s or holidays for singles over 40. The feedback we get from all our guests tells us that, even if they were sceptical before hand, people find our mixed groups much more fun than they ve found age-specific holidays.

Of course, given that most of our guests are between 35 and 65 anyway, there will be plenty of other over 50s with you during a holiday with us, so you get the best of both worlds: there are plenty of people your age to spend the holiday with and you might even discover that some of the younger people are great company as well. We also find that more of our travellers are women than men, though we do aim to have a balance of sexes on each trip.

If the age of other travellers is of concern to you, then you can call our office for more details about the trip you re interested in. This will also give you the chance to talk to one of our representatives about the holiday itself and, because we make sure that somebody from the team has visited every destination, hotel and resort that we take you to, you can be guaranteed that you re speaking to an expert on the trip, who can give you clear, personal advice.

Should you want to talk to other travellers and find out for yourself how many people on your singles holidays are over 50, then simply head over to our forum and ask. You can also start talking to people heading on the holiday with you and get to know the people you ll be meeting on the trip. It s a great way to start bonding early, and you might even get a few useful tips or pieces of advice from the people there.

Finally, when deciding between singles holidays for over 50s or one of our mixed ranged packages, remember that on every trip your group will be accompanied by one of our friendship hosts, whose job it will be break the ice, keep you entertained and offer plenty of advice, which is another reason we think are holidays are great for everyone.

Rolling an IRA into a Health Savings Account #rolling #over #an

    #

Rolling Over Retirement Savings to a Health Savings Account

I thought you could make a tax-free rollover from retirement savings into a health savings account, but my 401(k) administrator says that I can’t roll over my 401(k) into an HSA.

See Also: FAQs About Health Savings Accounts

You can make a tax-free rollover into an HSA from an IRA, but not from a 401(k), 457 or other retirement plan. However, if you have a 401(k) from a former employer, you may be able to make the move in two steps: Roll it over into an IRA first, then make a tax-free direct transfer from the IRA into your HSA.

You can then use the money in the HSA tax-free for medical expenses in any year. If you take money out of a traditional IRA to pay medical expenses (or anything else), you’ll have to pay taxes on the withdrawal and may have to pay a 10 percent penalty if you’re under 59½ (you can make penalty-free IRA withdrawals for medical expenses that are more than 10 percent of your adjusted gross income for the year, or more than 7.5 percent if you are 65 or older).

There are a few caveats: You can make a tax-free rollover from an IRA to an HSA only once in your lifetime, and you must qualify to make new HSA contributions that year (in 2016, you must have a health insurance policy with a deductible of at least $1,300 for individual coverage or $2,600 for family coverage). The size of the rollover is limited to the annual HSA contribution limit minus any money you’ve already contributed for the year. In 2016, you can contribute up to $3,350 to an HSA if you have individual coverage or $6,750 for family coverage, plus an extra $1,000 if you’re 55 or older anytime during the year. Contact your IRA and HSA administrator about making a direct transfer from one account to the other.

If you have the extra cash, it’s usually better to use new money for HSA contributions. That way, you can keep more money growing tax-deferred in your IRA and also take a tax deduction for new HSA contributions.

For more information about the tax rules, see IRS Publication 969, About Health Savings Accounts.

United, Orbitz Sue Travel Site Over ‘Hidden City’ Tickets

United Airlines Inc. and Orbitz Worldwide LLC sued to prevent the travel website Skiplagged.com from helping consumers buy what the companies call improper “hidden city” plane tickets that undercut their sales.

Skiplagged helps travelers find cheap airfares by enabling them to book multistop flights and deplane before the flights reach their as-booked final destination. Sometimes a fare that travels through a hub city to another location can be cheaper than a ticket to the hub city alone.

“In its simplest form, a passenger purchases a ticket from city A to city B to city C but does not travel beyond city B,” according to the companies’ complaint. “‘Hidden City’ ticketing is strictly prohibited by most commercial airlines because of logistical and public-safety concerns.”

Skiplagged founder Aktarer Zaman of New York “intentionally and maliciously” interfered with airline industry business relationships “by promoting prohibited forms of travel,” the companies said in their complaint, filed today in Chicago federal court.

Among their stated concerns is United’s resultant inability to count passengers, which can cause departure delays and affect fuel load computations.

    No Permission

Orbitz, an online travel booking site, and United said neither of them gave Zaman permission to engage in hidden-city ticketing. Claiming he’s unfairly competing against them and implying he’s connected to United and Orbitz by linking customers to their websites, they’re seeking a court order halting the conduct.

Zaman, reached through his LinkedIn.com e-mail account, had no immediate comment on the suit. United Airlines is a unit of Chicago-based United Continental Holdings. Orbitz is a unit of Orbitz Worldwide Inc.

Randy Petersen, publisher of InsideFlyer magazine, said hundreds of thousands of frequent fliers probably use the hidden-city technique, but the most savvy only do it a few times a year to prevent detection by the airlines. Carriers are likely to freeze the frequent-flier accounts or travelers who use the technique or to strip them of miles, said Petersen, who is based in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

    Potato Chips

Airlines and passengers have disagreed over the practice for decades, he said. People who seek out hidden-city tickets often liken forgoing the second half of a trip to not eating the bottom half of a bag of chips. The thinking: They paid for the chips, so why are they required to eat the whole bag?

Carriers say that the practice takes unfair advantage of the hub-and-spoke airline system and that people who use it are defrauding them, Petersen said.

“Use of hidden-city ticketing can save a lot of money, and airlines aren’t in the business of promoting, allowing or turning a blind eye to practices that can break the system down,” Petersen said.

Small corporate travel departments occasionally employ it, too, risking the loss of fare discounts they enjoy. Still, some can’t resist paying $400 for a ticket using the technique if it would cost $1,200 the traditional way, he said.

Airlines have told Orbitz that a traveler caught on a hidden-city routing is subject to having his ticket voided without refund, the Internet travel company said today in a statement.

American Airlines Group Inc. in a letter to travel agents on its website, suggested it will have to raise fares if it keeps losing money from the practice.

“Purchasing a ticket to a point beyond the actual destination and getting off the aircraft at the connecting point is unethical,” according to the letter by American, which isn’t party to the case. “It is tantamount to switching price tags to obtain a lower price on goods sold at department stores.”

The case is United Airlines Inc. v. Zaman, 14-cv-9214, U.S. District Court, Northern District of Illinois (Chicago).

    Identity Theft Statistics: 15 million victims a year #identity #theft #statistics,

    #

Approximately 15 million United States residents have their identities used fraudulently each year with financial losses totalling upwards of $50 billion.*

On a case-by-case basis, that means approximately 7% of all adults have their identities misused with each instance resulting in approximately $3,500 in losses.

Close to 100 million additional Americans have their personal identifying information placed at risk of identity theft each year when records maintained in government and corporate databases are lost or stolen.
These alarming statistics demonstrate identity theft may be the most frequent, costly and pervasive crime in the United States.

The sophistication level of professional identity thieves involved in organized crime continues to grow along with the methods they develop. From individually tailored phishing and vishing scams, to increasingly successful hacks of corporate and government databases, to elaborate networks of botnets designed to hijack millions of computers without any trace, there is an ever-increasing threat to all Americans.

At the same time, basic methods of identity theft continue unabated. From stealing wallets and purses, to dumpster diving and stealing mail, to the use of pretext and social engineering to deceive customer call centers into releasing personal account information, the original methods of identity theft still work.

As the methods used to perform identity theft expand, so do the types of accounts and services being stolen by identity thieves. Credit, debit, checking and saving accounts are no longer the only targets. Identity fraud has grown to include theft of cell and landline phone service; cable and satellite television service; power, water, gas and electric service; Internet payment service; medical insurance; home mortgages and rental housing; automobile, boat and other forms of financing and loans; and, government benefits. Identity thieves will also use stolen identities to obtain employment and to deceive police when arrested.

Quite simply, every individual or business is vulnerable to attack when it comes to personal or corporate information, products and services.

*Based on a range of information gathered from public and private resources.

    2011 Darwin Award: Motorcycle Helmet Law, ex-Protestor #darwin #award: #motorcycle #helmet

    Motorcycle Helmet Law, ex-Protestor
    2011 Darwin Award Winner
    Confirmed True by Darwin

(July 2011, New York) Protesting motorcycle helmet laws, an Onondaga, NY man was participating in a bare-noggin protest ride when he was killed via flipping over the handlebars. The motorcycle accident injured the noggin of Mr. Contos, 55, fatally damaging a brain that was unable to determine the physics of the situation. Moreover, hed do it again if he could, according to his elder brother. He would have wanted it that way.

Certain laws have physics on their side, obviously, and the laws say one’s body cannot walk away from a high-speed physical impact. Laws not subject to repeal. Unprotected–you squash like a bug. Protected–you eat squash for dinner.

Since properly padded and protected men can walk away from a 90-mph crash, protection is prudent when you increase above a critical threshhold.

Prudent, but sould protection be mandatory? Robert Frost says, “I hold it to be the inalienable right of anybody to go to hell in his own way.”

Police said Phil “hit his brakes, fishtailed and went out of control, flipping him over the handlebars.” What we, the Darwin Awards committee, would like to know–and news reports don’t explain–is just how he went over the handlebars?

    Senior Travel Insurance (over 65) #germany #travel

    #travel insurance quote
    #

    Senior Travel Insurance (over 65)

Travel can be a risky venture for those over 65, over 70, and even over 75, because they are slightly more fragile than your average healthy 20-year-old. Seniors with medical conditions and even those with no health conditions need the right senior travel insurance coverage to protect them from financial losses.

What are the risks for travelers over 65?

Some of the things that can go wrong for senior travelers include the following:

    • A pre-existing condition reoccurs simply by living longer, you are more likely to have a pre-existing medical condition. Should your condition reoccur while you are traveling, your medical coverage will be invalid unless you have informed the travel insurance company of the condition and purchased the pre-existing condition waiver.
    • You experience a medical emergency travel involves all kinds of new experiences: strange foods, foreign climates, and different surroundings. If you get ill or are injured on your trip, how will you arrange for emergency medical transportation in an unfamiliar region?
    • Your tour is canceled travel suppliers including cruises, tours, and rentals may have financial problems you don’t know about ahead of time. If they cease operations, how will you recover the money you paid them?
    • You have to be evacuated medical evacuations are highly expensive. If you are traveling in a region where the local medical facilities cannot adequately treat your condition, how will you arrange and pay for an emergency evacuation to a qualified medical hospital? After you are treated, how will you then get back home?
    • Your luggage is stolen thieves are highly resourceful and can steal luggage right out from under your nose. If you have important items even those medications packed in your carry-on bag how will you replace them and continue your trip?
    • You need help or advice anytime you are traveling in a new place, you could be in a situation where you need travel advice or emergency assistance. You may even need help communicating in a foreign language. If you need travel advice, legal advice, or foreign language assistance, who can you call?

What coverage do you need as a senior traveler?

While the following is not an exhaustive list of all the coverages available with travel insurance plans. it describes those that are most useful to senior travelers.

    • Medical coverage provides for emergency medical and dental care in the case of a sudden illness or injury on your trip. (Review the details of medical/dental coverage .)
    • Pre-existing medical condition coverage provides protection against high medical costs that result from a recurring condition. (Review the details of pre-existing condition coverage .)
    • Evacuation coverage arranges and pays for medically necessary evacuations or for the repatriation of a traveler’s remains. This coverage can also help a patient get home after they have been treated. (Review the details for evacuation and repatriation coverage .)
    • Baggage coverage provides replacement value for items that are lost, stolen, or destroyed on your trip, including the bag itself. (Review the details for baggage coverage .)
    • Financial default coverage provides reimbursement for payments made to a travel supplier that completely ceases operations due to financial default or bankruptcy. (Review the details of financial default coverage .)

When should you buy your senior travel insurance?

When you purchase your travel insurance may be just as important as why you purchase it.

Remember that all travel insurance companies offer a free look period with a refund if you decide the plan is not what you need.

Where should you buy your senior travel insurance?

We recommend purchasing your travel insurance directly from a third-party company for a number of reasons.

Very briefly, you’ll have more choices and options in your travel insurance plan if you purchase from a third-party company using a comparison tool .

How can you be sure your travel insurance coverage is adequate?

Singles Vacations for People Over 30

Going on a singles vacation can save a lot of wasted time in the dating game. (Photo: Dynamic Graphics Group/Dynamic Graphics Group/Getty Images )

    Related Articles

The “singles” market concentrates not on single people per se, but on single people who wish they weren’t. Singles nightclubs are where single people go to meet other single people who also wish they weren’t, as are singles parties — arranged and advertized by professional organizers — and singles websites. Singles vacations are no exception; they are arranged for and taken by single people looking for partners.

Reasons for Considering a Singles Vacation

According to Best Single Travel (bestsingletravel.com), almost one in three adults in the U.S. are single, and the typical American spends more years alone than in a partnership between the ages of 15 and 85. Traveling alone is something many people dread, but a financial incentive exists also: Hotels and cruise lines almost invariably impose a “single surcharge” on a traveler who reserves a room solo. The surcharge can as much as double the cost so that the operator doesn’t realize less than his accommodation is worth when fully occupied. Booking through a singles-specific vacation organizer can pair like-minded and compatible people who enjoy the company and save each other a considerable amount of money.

    Groups of Singles

Groups of singles are seldom arranged on a random basis. Organizers advertize their products based on age ranges — 18 to 35 is common, then 36 to 50, then 50 and above — and on interests, occupations and destinations. Singles vacations for people over 30 are designed to weed out disruptively immature people, those without a steady income and those whose interest, clothes and style clash with others. Singles clubs often make their own mass-reservations at resorts, which helps keep down costs. Athletic interests, car shows, balloon rides and gourmet food events all draw well-matched people into environments where everyone else is relaxed, single and open to being approached. Companies such as Best Single Travel (bestsingletravel.com), Singles in Paradise (singlesinparadise.com) and Singles Travel Company (singlestravelcompany.com) are representative of these organizations.

    Special Interests and Tours

A number of companies operate singles vacations based on special interests and destination-specific tours. These itineraries can involve anything from a bus filled with older Angelino women looking for younger men descending on a nightclub in Las Vegas — the infamous “cougar cruises” — to fishing, skiing or scuba diving trips for retirees, and world travel for those who can afford it. For example, single people fascinated by the ancient Egyptian pyramids typically enjoy finding themselves on a plane filled with other singles with identical interests.

    Singles Cruises

Singles cruises set sail with a boat packed with single people all looking to find a partner for a night, the length of the vacation or a lifetime. The only certainty is that you know that when you approach a new face they are in the “market” for the same result from their investment as you: someone to be with for a while. This radically reduces the chances of embarrassing refusals and increases the chance that — even if two people aren’t right for each other — they will have sufficient common ground and experience to become friends or drinking buddies, at the very least. This chance is increased further when ages are compatible. Singles cruises typically take place as charters on smaller vessels, but all the facilities of the liners are afforded: restaurants, bars and nightclubs, swimming pools and sports facilities.

United, Orbitz Sue Travel Site Over ‘Hidden City’ Tickets – Bloomberg
