Koala

Perth Accommodation

Your pick of Perth CBD hotels

Perpetually laidback Perth may be a remote capital city, but it’s most definitely not removed from a cosmopolitan lifestyle. Choosing your Perth accommodation around the urban centre means shopping, restaurants, cafes, theatres and business centres will be right at your fingertips easy to discover thanks to the Free Transit Zone operating in the CBD.

From budget backpackers and mid-range motels on Wellington and Murray Streets to splurge-worthy suites on Adelaide Terrace, your choices extend from the 5-star Hyatt and Four Points by Sheraton, to the 4-star comfort of Rydges, Mantra, Novotel and Mercure. Free time? Visit the Cultural Centre on Northbridge’s Roe Street for galleries, libraries, bars and more.

Find your perfect space in Freo

Less than half an hour from Perth at the mouth of the Swan River, Fremantle is a favourite destination for beach goers, market lovers and history buffs. This cultured port city provides a quieter stay just outside the city limits, with self-contained apartments, urban bed and breakfasts and a slew of pub and boutique rooms close to the esplanade.

Ideal for anyone travelling with tight purse strings, Freo’s selection of 3 and 4-star establishments mean you can stay a little longer and venture further. Take a day-trip on the ferry from Fremantle out to Rottnest Island where beaches, bays, reef and caves beckon to be explored or stay overnight on the island at one of the premium villas or cheap and cheerful cabins.

Settle in close to Subiaco Oval

If you’re planning to watch the West Coast Eagles play on their home turf during your holiday in Perth, have a look at the Subiaco hotels around Patersons Stadium. More than just a site for sports, Subi has grown into one of Perth’s trendiest inner pockets with a buzzing food scene only three train stops away from Perth city.

The suburb of Subiaco is also conveniently close to Kings Park, which encourages the notion that Perth residents love to soak in the great outdoors. If you can’t do without your morning fitness routine, stay close to the sprawling park or get your cardio fix with a run on the beach at Cottesloe by booking an ocean-view apartment 20 minutes outside the city.

Lights out management of a NetApp FAS2020

Posted in Inside TFG. Tips and Tricks

Our DEVOPS team manage a NetApp FAS2020 filer for a customer, and recently our network monitoring systems began reporting an issue connecting to the device s BMC (Board Management Controller). This is the independent processor that provides the lowest level access to the system. In theory, if everything was to break and the machine was to blow up, we should be able to log into the BMC and find out what is going on. It s an entirely separate computer tasked with providing a (secure!) back-door to the system in case of catastrophic failure.

Even though NetApp has a phenomenal reputation at a technical seminar last year, a sales engineer said that no NetApp customer has ever lost data due to a hardware failure I still don t feel comfortable without access to the BMC.

Access to the BMC (on other NetApp devices the LOM controller is called a Remote Management Controller, or RMC) is via SSH, using naroot as the username. From here you can move up the chain to a system console, and use CTRL-G to move down the chain back to the BMC.

The filer also allows management via SSH directly, and not through the BMC. I used this shell to restart the BMC.

ilca-netapp bmc help status
bmc status
– Display status for a Baseboard Managment Controller (BMC).
ilca-netapp bmc help reboot
bmc reboot
– Reboot the Baseboard Managment Controller (BMC)
ilca-netapp bmc reboot
ilca-netapp The BMC rebooted successfully

It looks like the SSH daemon was simply hung (it had an uptime of 270+ days prior to the reboot) and restarting the BMC through the management console in this way corrected the issues the monitoring systems were reporting.
