21 Things Flight Attendants Want You To Know Before You Board A Plane

    Travel pillows for airplanes

Welcome aboard WH Air. where no one catches a cold, gets hobbled by jet lag, or is served inedible food. We don’t really have our own airline, but if we did, it would be (wo)manned by these four flight attendants, the fittest in the biz. Take note of their travel tips and prepare to fly the healthy skies.

    Travel pillows for airplanes

    1. DRINK BEFORE YOU GO.

The humidity on planes is typically around an arid 10 percent. Dry air makes Heather headachy and groggy, so preflight, she downs at least 12 ounces of water.

    2. CREATE A CATNAP KIT.

For sweet dreams at 30,000 feet, Heather suggests stowing these items in your carry-on: a neck pillow, noise-canceling headphones, and an eye mask with built-in eye cavities to block out light without smudging your mascara (try ones from dreamessentials.com or flight001.com).

    3. ROLL OUT STRESS.

To nix neck and back aches, Heather totes a tiny hand massager she picked up in Japan. Try a similar one, like Pressure Positive Knobble II ($9, massagewarehouse.com). She also suggests this in-your-seat stretch: lightly squeeze the top of your left trapezius muscle (it runs between your shoulder and the base of your skull) while turning your head to the right. Repeat on the other side.

    4. TAKE A HIKE.

Heather’s fix for flight-swollen feet? Every hour, walk the length of the cabin to prevent blood from pooling in your feet (which causes them to puff up) and to ward off clots, something you’re at greater risk for if you take oral birth control, are pregnant, or are on a flight longer than eight hours.

    9 Awesomely Painted Airplanes

    Travel pillows for airplanes

Denton artist John Bramblitt touches the paint before his brush touches the canvas.

Through this process, he creates detailed art that bursts with color, emotion, and complexity. It’s why viewers are always shocked when they realize that he is, in fact, blind. Originally from El Paso, Texas and a UNT alumnus, Bramblitt has been painting for years after he lost his sight due to complications with epilepsy.

Recently, Bramblitt’s latest piece was chosen to be displayed on an airplane hosted by Rock in Rio, Brazil’s renowned music festival and one of the largest in the world. With crowds that boast millions, Rock in Rio has hosted artists like Queen, Rihanna, Guns N’ Roses, and Shakira.

The plane was used to promote the event through a partnership between Gol Airlines, Delta, Air France, and Spotify. A vibrant crowd below cheers, while a rock star in a jet blue jacket grinds on his guitar across the plane’s rudder.

2 EVA s Hello Kitty Airplane

    Travel pillows for airplanes

Dubbed the Hello Kitty Shining Star Jet, the colorful cartoon cast appears on the outside of a Boeing 777-300ER as part of a collaboration with the Japanese animation studio Sanrio. The second generation of EVA, Hello Kitty jets will fly travelers from Chicago and the Midwest to destinations in Asia and China, while being surrounded by adorable animation characters. Even the cabin crew wears special Hello Kitty uniforms.

The theme continues in the interior, with the iconic logo appearing on headrests, pillows, air sickness bags, and even toilet paper. At dinner, devoted fans can chow down on Hello Kitty grilled vegetables and food shaped like the famous feline. The level of detail in the themed flights have won warm reviews from frequent fliers for injecting a little fun into the journey.

    3 WestJet s Frozen Airplane

    Travel pillows for airplanes

In 2013, Canadian airline WestJet custom-painted a Frozen-themed plane with beloved characters Anna, Elsa, and Olaf on the inside and out.

The painters covered a Boeing 737 with more than 170 gallons of paint from nose to tail in Fort Worth, Texas. Rotating six-person crews worked 12-hour shifts for 21 days straight to finish the whimsical job.

The Arendelle sisters appear on the tail of the aircraft, where Elsa waves her hands to create magical snowflakes that travel the length of the fuselage to the front of the plane, where Olaf the enchanted snowman suns himself on a beach.

4 Air New Zealand s Dragon Smaug Aircraft

    Travel pillows for airplanes

Also in 2013, New Zealand’s national carrier unveiled a giant image of Smaug the dragon on its plane to celebrate the premiere of the second film in The Hobbit trilogy.

The 54-meter-high giant dragon logo was sprawled across both sides of the Boeing 777-300 which was scheduled to fly to Los Angeles for the premiere of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. It was the first time Hobbit film fans got a full view of the dragon, whose eye was revealed in the first movie.

    5 Icelandair s Glacier-themed Airplane

    Travel pillows for airplanes

Icelandair celebrated the launch of its new glacier-themed Boeing 757-200 airplane in 2017 by flying the special-liveried aircraft over its glacial namesake. The inaugural flight went from Keflavik International Airport, near Reykjavik, to the Egilsstaðir airport in Egilsstaðir.

The airline usually names its planes after volcanoes. But this one is named Vatnajökull, in honor of the Vatnajökull glacier that also was the inspiration for the paint scheme. The country’s largest glacier, Vatnajökull covers 8% of the country’s land mass and is home to three active volcanoes—Öræfajökull, Báròarbunga, and Grímsvötn.

    6 Dubai s Personalized Aircrafts

    Travel pillows for airplanes

The Emirates Aircraft Appearance Centre, the world’s largest aircraft painting facility owned by an airline, has completely stripped and repainted 33 jets in 2015, or 13 per cent of its fleet.

Emirates had some eye-catching customized decals installed on its fleet. This included the Real Madrid A380, the Paris Saint-Germain A380, the Arsenal 777, the AC Milan A380, the Arsenal A380, and the United for Wildlife A380.

According to Emirates, aircraft appearance can affect the operating and technical performance of the plane. A good paint job can also help reduce fuel burn, and this convinced the airline to invest in an in-house aircraft appearance center.

7 All Nippon Airways Star Wars Planes

    Travel pillows for airplanes

To coincide with the release of The Force Awakens in 2015, Japan carrier All Nippon Airways (ANA) launched a five-year “Star Wars Project” that included a new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner painted with an R2-D2 livery, proving yet again that the droid does indeed have the ability to take flight.

8 Norwegian s Freddie Mercury Airplane

    Travel pillows for airplanes

Norwegian is celebrating its 71st birthday this year with a very special re-brand of one of its aircraft. Queen legend Freddie Mercury is set to be painted on the fin tail of a Norwegian plane.

The icon, who died in November 1991, inspired millions, and probably wouldn’t be surprised that he is now emblazoned on an aircraft. As the singer once remarked: “I am not going to be a star. I am going to be a legend.”

The Freddie fin tail will officially take to the skies later this year, in time for what would have been the singer’s own 71st birthday.

    9 Kulula s Fun Flying 101 Airplane

    Travel pillows for airplanes

Kulula is a low-cost Johannesburg-based airline known for its quirky sense of humor. In February 2010 the airline put into service a Boeing 737-800 with a “Flying 101” livery highlighting different parts of the plane.

On the exterior of the cockpit, an arrow points up saying “Big cheese —Captain, My Captain!” The location of the “black box” flight data recorder was highlighted with a big arrow. If there’s a better or more striking way to understand what’s underneath the skin of a plane, we’ve yet to see it.

Best Travel Pillow Reviews 2017: Memory Foam, Inflatable, Neck Support, travel

The Best Travel Pillow Reviews 2017 Memory Foam, Inflatable Neck, or Buckwheat

Posted by Raymond Walsh – January 26, 2017 | Category: Loot

    Travel pillows Travel pillows

Hunting for the best travel pillow in 2017 was not something I’d thought would keep me up at night, but here I am, lurking in airport shops, scouring the internet, reading endless travel pillow reviews. All the while comparing weight and size and price, and weighing the merits of memory foam vs. inflatable vs. microbeads vs. buckwheat (yes, apparently buckwheat travel pillows are a thing) and whatever else manufacturers can stuff into them.

And aesthetics. Let’s not forget aesthetics. No one wants to look like a dork sleeping on an airplane in front of 300 strangers — because we all know how judge-y strangers on a plane can be. I think I spent less time researching which car to buy than I did researching travel neck pillows.

    Travel pillows

You see, I used to be one of those folks that rolled my eyes at people who would roll up to the airport with a travel pillow. Since I’m a window seat devotee, rolling up a sweater or hoodie and sticking it between my head and the airplane cabin was good enough for me. And on long-haul flights they actually GIVE you a pillow. Bonus. Who needs to bring their own travel pillow, I thought. I didn’t see what the fuss was about.

But about 8 years ago I was in a car accident, and ever since then my neck is a lot more crotchety — if I sleep on it the wrong way, or twist it out of place, it’s chiropractor and massage and headaches for days. They say to never mock a man until you have walked a mile in his shoes (that s how the saying goes right?) Well, all those years of my eye-rolling “judginess” at travel neck pillows came back to haunt me.

So you see, I’m now a fan of a solid travel neck support pillow to ensure I’m not going to have endless neck pain at the end of a long-haul flight. Even doctors recommend a travel pillow to help you sleep better on a plane.

The thing is, there are SO MANY travel pillows on the market today. There are ones that claim to be the best travel pillow for neck pain, and the best travel pillow for sleeping. They can be U-shaped or traditional or orthopedic or even sometimes like something out of science fiction. And of course there’s the standard blow-up travel pillow (AKA the Poor Man’s Sleep Aid.)

    Table of Contents

A few years ago I was sent the J-Pillow Travel Pillow (which is reviewed below) and kinda fell in love with it. Well almost, it had two disadvantages, but I’ll get into that later. I left my beloved J-Pillow behind by accident in an apartment rental in Portugal, so when I got to Australia I figured I’d better start looking for a replacement. The local supermarket had some cheap microbead travel pillows on sale for only 5 bucks, and I figured, well, for 5 bucks you can’t go wrong.

Well it appears that you can.

I snagged the pillow trying to cut the price tag off, and microbeads flowed free and fast. A Niagara Falls of microbeads all over the living room floor. So that’s why I won’t be recommending microbead travel pillows anytime soon. But I m always on the hunt for that elusive best neck pillow.

Which brings me back to my current predicament. What exactly is the best travel pillow?

Choosing the Best Travel Pillow for You

The question shouldn’t be “What is the best travel pillow?” but rather “What is the best travel pillow for YOU?” Our bodies are designed differently, so what might be the best airplane pillow for me might be something completely different for you.

I have neck pain if I sit still for too long, so I need a travel pillow with good neck support. You may need something a little softer with more cushioning.

Something else to consider is the size of the travel pillow. Do you want to carry it around with you when you reach your destination? Inflatable travel pillows take up a lot less space, but may not offer the support you need. Memory foam travel pillows mould into the shape of your head and neck, but tend to be a lot more bulky. If space is a concern, this is definitely a consideration.

The Best Travel Pillows: Desperately Seeking Slumber #bharathi #travels

On long-haul flights, an unconventional travel pillow can be the key to avoiding a pain in the neck

Travel pillows, clockwise from top left: Travelon 1st Class Sleeper; Comfy Commuter; Caldera Releaf Neck Rest; Kuhi Comfort; Travelrest Drue Wagner/The Wall Street Journal

Or at least that’s what the makers of the SkyRest hope. It’s just one of a surfeit of unusual travel pillows for sale now. Search online for travel pillow and up pops an array of strange options. Many were invented in desperation by sore-necked travelers—some with impressive credentials: A clinical professor of neurosurgery! An Alaska Airlines pilot!

I looked at a dozen of these pillows and brought eight along on a recent trip that involved four long-haul flights, each over nine hours. To the horror of my family, I even tested the most extreme bolsters.

Like the SkyRest, for instance: Blown up to its full 14 inches wide by 13 inches deep, the pillow is meant to be placed on top of a tray table or your lap. The proposed sleeping position involves leaning forward and placing your head on the pillow’s sloped top. It feels like being extremely pregnant or sitting with a big box on your thighs.

The Uprightsleeper looks like a neck brace—the kind worn to immobilize the cervical spine after a traumatic injury (although it makes no medical claims )—and facilitates sleeping while sitting straight up. A padded rest for the chin gets pulled tight to keep the head from falling forward or sideways. It may be a good option for those with neck problems, but I found it to be a pain in the neck.

Sales of the SkyRest have grown 10% to 20% almost every year since the company’s 2002 launch.

And then there’s the Ostrich Pillow, a bean-filled mask that covers your entire head but has a hole for your nose and mouth so you can breathe. It resembles the head of an alien octopus and is even more embarrassing to wear than it sounds.

Travel pillows sell because no one wants to use those flimsy white ones the crew tosses on seats in the economy cabin. (Not only are these pillows uncomfortable, they’re sponges for other people’s germs.) Even sales of the ungainly SkyRest have grown 10% to 20% almost every year since its 2002 launch, according to the manufacturer.

Despite all the design efforts, many of these so-called pillows didn’t pass muster. The best option is to make sure you get a window seat and bring a pillow from home, with a fresh cover for each flight. But if you’re going to be stuck in the middle or aisle seat for hours on end, the right pillow can be a godsend. Here are a few standouts.
