Which are the Best Schools in Auckland?

Which are the Best Schools in Auckland?

Auckland Grammar failed the cut, but Mt Roskill Grammar outshone wealthier rivals in Metro magazine’s investigation to find the top 25 high schools in Auckland.

Metro editor Lauren Quaintance says, “I expect this list to bring out strong feelings. But we felt that parents should not make such an important decision without being able to weigh up some very pertinent and new data.”

Senior writer Gilbert Wong consulted education experts to devise a novel ratings system that let Metro help provide the answer to one of the most important questions in your son or daughter’s education: which high school is best?

“If you want to know how your local school does compared to the one down the road, you won’t get an answer from the Ministry of Education,” says Wong. He gained access to a variety of databases including university entrance rates, teacher turnover and student suspensions and stand-downs that enabled Metro to rate the job schools are doing.

The Metro ratings system compares private with public, NCEA with Cambridge and comes up with a list of the 25 top performing schools across the region.

Those that made the cut include a mix of private and public, high and low decile schools. Under Metro’s criteria some so-called beacon schools like Auckland Grammar and Kings College did not perform as well as comparable schools.

Mt Roskill Grammar, a decile 5 school was discovered to be producing better results than a clutch of decile 10 high schools.

The Best Schools issue of Metro with in-depth information on the 25 top schools in the region is on sale on Monday (July 31).

The top 25 schools list:

1. St Cuthbert’s College
2. Diocesan School for Girls

Online Class: Film Appreciation

Course Description

‘Film Appreciation for Modern Audiences’ is intended as a journey through the world of film. It is a sampling of the thought and accumulated critical opinion that forms the basis of the modern stature of 100 years of film-making–as art or culturally important dramatic work.

If you love film, then this course will help you learn more about film analysis, film reviews and discussions, period genres and movements in film style, and more. It will provide you an informed opinion that will hopefully make your enjoyment of the film medium deeper.

This course may be useful for professionals who need to be informed and conversant about the film-industry; for the layman who wants to know as much as he/she can about the world of film for personal enjoyment; or for the student, hoping to become familiar with the ‘lay-of-the-land’ for film-criticism.

    How to Identify Circumcision Damage
    in the Adult Male

NOTE: Links with a right-facing blue arrow will take you off this site.

The risks of newborn circumcision are
an underreported and ignored factor in this argument.
Most often a poor surgical result isn’t recognized until years after the event.
The adverse long term consequences of infant circumcision
on the sexual health of American men must be recognized
    by physicians, parents, and legislators.
James L. Snyder, M.D. Past President, Virginia Urologic Society
The Problem of Circumcision in America

Many circumcised men are unaware that they have been harmed by circumcision because they do not understand how the intact (non-circumcised) penis functions and/or they do not know how to identify their circumcision damage. Many circumcised men fail to recognize their own circumcision damage and assume that peculiar things about their penis are ‘normal’ or ‘a birth defect.’

NOHARMM documents evidence of how males have been harmed by circumcision. After reading this page, we encourage you to complete a confidential Harm Documentation Form and submit it to NOHARMM. Some individuals may be able to take legal action against their circumciser, especially those who initiate action within one year after first realizing their damage or, in the case of minors, within one year of turning age 18. We can refer you to an appropriate attorney .

This page illustrates some of the physical consequences of infant circumcision, as they appear in the adult male:

For a discussion of circumcision’s sexual and psychological consequences affecting men,
please read Long-Term Consequences of Neonatal Circumcision .

Below: This photograph shows the lack of skin mobility during erection of a circumcised penis. Note the dark scar where the foreskin was amputated.

This tightness and the unnatural dryness of the penile shaft and head causes some men (and their partners) pain, abrasion, and bleeding during sex. Breaks in the skin are an effective way to transmit and contract sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV.

Below: These five photographs show how the shaft skin of
an intact (non-circumcised) penis moves during sexual activity.

Range of skin movement marked by point A is several inches back and forth.
Note how point B moves and the end of the foreskin widens to accommodate
the head of the penis. Notice the smooth texture of the head of the penis.
The moist mucosal surface of the foreskin and glans is similar to that
of the female labia and vagina.
NOTE:Retraction is normally not possible or desirable in infants and young children.

Explore the severity of your circumcision or the amount of foreskin you have using the Coverage Index

The glans (penile head) is normally an internal organ protected by the moist mucosal tissue of the prepuce (foreskin). Without the foreskin, the glans is exposed to the outer environment (air, soap, clothing, sun, etc.). The glans dries out and develops several extra layers of skin (keratinization). 1 Compare the dry, cracked appearance of the glans of a circumcised penis (upper right) with the moist mucosal end of the glans of an intact penis (lower right). The unnatural dryness of the circumcised penis can cause abrasion and bleeding during sex, whereas the moistness of the intact penis makes sex more comfortable, especially during penetration. For women with circumcised male partners, the problem of ‘vaginal dryness’ during sex may also be partly attributable to the unnatural dryness of the circumcised penis.

Besides removing the densely nerve-laden foreskin, circumcision removes 50% of the penile shaft skin and associated nerve endings. 2 The exposed glans then keratinizes, causing further loss of sensation. Many circumcised men in the Awakenings survey 3 reported that desensitization caused them to abandon or bypass the subtler pleasures of genital foreplay in favor of immediate intercourse, which would offer them greater stimulation. They often hurried through intercourse, however often needing extraordinary and sometimes violent thrusting to obtain sufficient stimulation for both pleasure and orgasm. Other men reported frequent reliance on behaviors offering more stimulation than vaginal sex (e.g. oral sex, anal sex or masturbation) or compensating for diminished quality of sexual response with quantity (sexual compulsivity).

Eventually, keratinization occurs even after adult circumcision. It can also occur in intact men with short foreskins or those who habitually wear their foreskin in the retracted position.

Imagine how different female sexual response would be if the clitoral hood (female foreskin) and the labia were removed. Exposure of the clitoris to the constant effects of the outer environment would approximate the effects of male circumcision.

POST OPERATIVE VASECTOMY – The Michigan Vasectomy Center, post vasectomy pain.#Post

    #

    post vasectomy pain

NOW THAT YOU’VE HAD YOUR VASECTOMY

There are a few routines and instructions we would like to pass along to assure the greatest degree of comfort possible after your vasectomy. The counseling session you had provided an opportunity to ask any and all questions and to prepare you. To remind you of suggestions given on the videotape and during the private interview, keep this instruction sheet handy. Please feel free to call if you have any further questions.

This is the day of surgery. Wear a jock strap. Use gauze or a wash cloth inside the supporter to keep pressure on the area. After you go to the bathroom, put some antibiotic ointment over the incision. Do this for 2-3 days. Stay in the house lying down or in an easy chair with an ice bag over the groin area to reduce the swelling and bleeding. You can put the ice over the supporter under your pants. Use ice as much as possible until you go to bed. Get up only to go to the bathroom and to eat. Take the ibuprofen, three (3) tablets 4 times a day (daily total of 2400 mg). If there is still pain, it’s okay to add on Tylenol but not aspirin.

Cool shower, walk around; no heavy lifting or vigorous physical exercise. If swelling increases, sit down and relax as you did the first day. Wear a supporter but you don’t need ice, the gauze, or the wash cloth (see below). Take the ibuprofen (3 tablets 4x/day). Stay in the house.

You can now go outside. Increase activity but continue to limit maximum activity. Walking, golfing with a cart or other nonstrenuous activity is OK. Continue wearing athletic supporter for comfort, if needed. Use ibuprofen up to 2400 mg per day for any pain.

Return to normal activity and work. Limit jogging and pumping weights for at least one week.

Take (3) 200 mg ibuprofen four times per day (maximum of 2400 mg or 12 of the 200 mg tablets per day) for the first two days whether you need it or not. If you feel you need something more, take 2 or 3 Tylenol up to 4 times per day, 2 hrs. after each dose of ibuprofen. After two days, use it only as needed.

Day #1 – When you leave the office, you will be wearing an athletic supporter filled with gauze. This is fine for day 1. When you go to the bathroom, replace the gauze or use a washcloth to keep pressure on the scrotum. This reduces swelling and bleeding. Use an antibiotic ointment over the wound for the first 2-3 days.

Day #3 – Athletic supporter until comfortable without it.

1st Week – Once* after 1 week, if comfortable

    * Remember to use contraception until you have two negative semen checks.

Infections – are rare, but call if excessive redness, swelling, tenderness, fever, or oozing of pus from incision occurs. This usually will occur after the second day but infections have been identified up to 6 weeks after surgery. It’s OK to put antibiotic ointment on the surgery site if you want.

Bruising – over the scrotum is normal for up to about 2 weeks. You may get a “purple penis”.

Swelling – a small amount is not uncommon. Anything more should be reported. You will feel a small “lump” inside where the surgery was done for a few weeks. It will go away.

Granuloma – some men get another type of nodule where the vas was cut. Usually this is not painful and will go away. If it is larger than 1/2 inch, call me and we will begin medication to shrink it. This can start a few months or even years after a vasectomy. (Remember, a small lump can usually be felt for up to three months in most cases.)

Failure – is always a possibility. Use contraception until you have two semen checks without sperm in them.

Bloody Ejaculate – rare but possible for up to six months.

Pain – like an old fracture, a few men can have a long-term ache in the scrotum (or even in the groin) where the surgery was done. Rarely is any treatment even needed.

Long Term – No long term side effects like prostate cancer, high blood pressure, etc. have been proven with vasectomy.

Problems After Hours Call the hospital (989-839-3000) and ask them to page Dr. Pfenninger.

SEMEN CHECKS : We will do two semen checks to confirm sterilization. Although no appointment is needed, call to be sure that the office is open. The first will be done at 6 weeks after the procedure or after 15 ejaculations (which ever is later). The second will be done at 3 months after the procedure. There is no extra charge for this. Bring a semen sample in a clean jar or in the container provided within an hour or two after ejaculation. If ever you are concerned or want reassurance of sterilization, we will examine your semen for one year, at no charge. Be sure your name is on the container. Please use the OSHA approved medical hazard Ziplock bags.

ANOTHER FORM OF CONTRACEPTION SHOULD BE USED UNTIL YOUR SECOND SEMEN SAMPLE IS CLEAR OF SPERM. YOU ARE NOT STERILE UNTIL IT HAS BEEN DOCUMENTED THAT YOU HAVE HAD TWO NEGATIVE SAMPLES.

How to Become a Paralegal: Paralegal Schools & Careers

The paralegal profession is competitive and exciting with a wide range of careers and specific fields from which to choose. Education and training requirements vary by region, field, and between companies, but usually involve a minimum of two years of post-secondary study, sometimes culminating in an associate degree, as well as experience. Students can also earn certifications, a bachelor’s degree and even a master’s degree in paralegal studies.

This comprehensive guide includes information and data on education and training as well as key facts about salaries, job prospects and more.

    What Does a Paralegal Do?

    Paralegal Career Basics

Many paralegals work full-time in private firms, government agencies or corporate legal offices. They handle a broad range of administrative and research duties under the supervision of attorneys. For example, during the course of a day, they may organize and maintain legal files or draft documents, deliver or retrieve documents from the courthouse and conduct intensive legal research in preparation for court. Paralegals also investigate the background facts of cases, organize evidence and documents for attorneys to review, accompany lawyers to court, and manage schedules with witnesses and experts. Specific responsibilities can vary greatly, depending on the department, office or firm in which a paralegal works. Those who work for large firms might handle only one phase of a case, while those in smaller firms could work a case from beginning to end.

    Paralegal Career In-Depth

Much like lawyers, paralegals can choose to specialize in a certain type of law, which can determine the actual tasks they will spend most of their time doing. Criminal law paralegals, for example, may prepare clients for trial, interview witnesses, research legal precedents pertinent to a case, and must have a wide knowledge of criminal legal issues.

Paralegals working in a corporate setting will assist in legal business transactions for companies, compose employee contracts, prepare financial reports and maintain benefit plans. Immigration paralegals typically work for government organizations, but can also be employed by a firm. They obtain foreign documents, research immigration case laws, prepare paperwork for citizenship and deportation, and handle client concerns. Specialists in labor law review and prepare contracts between companies and their employees, handle litigation from disputes in the workplace, and help to represent businesses or workers.

    Paralegal Salaries

Paralegals work full-time and earned a median wage of $46,990 in 2012, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The top 10 percent of paralegal jobs pay $75,410 or more per year. Those who work for larger firms or in larger cities tend to earn more than paralegals who work for small firms. The highest annual wages were found in the federal government, followed by finance and insurance, then local governments.

    What Do Related Occupations Make?

Having an understanding of what related occupations earn can help current and potential students and graduates get a better idea of what they can expect to earn if they pursue a career as a paralegal or transition to another field. Related occupations will perform similar administrative duties as paralegals such as document preparation, filing and organization, and/or work in legal settings such as law offices, corporate legal departments, courtrooms or government agencies. Below are the 10th, 50th, and 90th percentile for wages of jobs related to and including paralegals.

    Difference between acne and pimples #faq, #acne, #acne #scars, #acne #marks,

    #

Question: What’s the difference between acne scars and acne marks?

    Answer:

Post acne marks. or macules, are commonly referred to as “acne scars.” Realacne scars. however, are the indentations or protrusions left behind by acne .

Here is a picture of my left cheek that shows the difference between acne scars and acne marks (as well as my large pores):

    Acne scars vs. Acne marks

As you can see, my acne scars are colorless but indented, and my acne marks are dark but flat. Acne scars are noticeable under direct lighting and they are difficult to cover up because it’s hard to find something that will “fill” them in. Acne marks are flat and can be concealed with makeup, though it’s not always possible to find a good skin color match.

Of the two, acne marks are more noticeable on bare skin, simply because they are darker. Acne scars are not as obvious unless you stare closely, stand under poor lighting, or have lots of really deep scarring. One is more a skin color issue and the other is more a skin texture issue. Which one is worse to have? Definitely acne scars.

Acne scars tend to give skin that pitted “orange peel” look and unfortunately, they are usually permanent. Topical creams and lotions do very little to treat acne scars, so don’t be fooled by any such claims. Acne scars never go away 100%, but their appearance can be minimized by invasive facial procedures. such as laser or dermabrasion. Getting silicone microdroplet injections can also help improve the appearance indented scars. Keep in mind that results vary and even really aggressive and expensive acne scar treatments do not have guaranteed results.

Acne marks, on the other hand, are flat red or brown dots left behind by pimples. They tend to give skin a blotchy, albeit, flat look. Acne marks fade on their own, but it can take a very, very long time. This kind of post-acne hyperpigmentation is better to have than acne scars because they at least respond to treatments and eventually fade. (To learn how to fade acne marks, check here .)

Some people are more prone to scarring, while others (especially those with fair skin) are more prone to hyperpigmentation. I have Asian skin, so I very easily get dark marks. The smallest and most short-lived pimple will leave a mark on my skin and that’s just the way it has always been. I am not as prone to getting acne scars, but I do have acne scars on my cheeks from cysts and other deep pimples (which are usually responsible for scars like ice pick scars).

People forget that you still have to deal with the aftermath of acne, even after you clear your skin. My skin has been clear for a few years now, but it took a long time for my skin tone to even out. My red marks eventually faded but my scarring looks exactly the same. That’s why I say it’s better to have acne marks than acne scars because even with time, acne scars will not go away.

It’s not like you really have a choice, but you can minimize the chance of scarring by not popping any pimples. However, even if you are really good about that, sometimes your skin will still scar and there’s not much you can do about it. Whether you will get acne scars or acne marks just depends on your skin. Even though there are no guarantees for never getting a scar from a pimple, you can decrease the chances of that happening by not picking at spots and learning how to treat acne the right way.

    Current Passions

    Year 2017

My newest book, The Inevitable. reached the New York Times bestseller list in 2016. This June (2017) it will be released in paperback. This book is about the deep trends over the next 20 years that will shape your life. I suggest we embrace these changes, including ubiquitous tracking, accessible artificial intelligence, constant sharing, getting paid to watch ads, VR in your home, etc. I am very excited by the book; I ve been told it is my most readable work yet.

My current passion this year is all Asia. I am finishing up a huge, huge book of my documentary photographs of the disappearing traditions of Asia, between Turkey and Japan. I will try to get to the few remaining countries of Asia that I have not yet visited. The still-untitled book should be published in 2018.

Three years ago I published my first fiction, The Silver Cord. I worked on it for 11 years! At 464 oversized pages, this huge book was fan-funded, the result of a successful Kickstarter-funded campaign. It is now available on Amazon. The Silver Cord contains two volumes of an epic story about angels and robots and a girl hero who must save the humans in between. The craftsmanship of the printing, including a 6-page fold out, is stunning. It has to be seen to be believed. If you like the graphic novel let me know, and we’ll do the next story.
