Outpatient Treatment Addiction Treatment Program for Adults and Adolescents

Center for Recovery offers dual diagnois intensive outpatient treatment including drug and/or alcohol abuse and addiction and treatment of mental health issues including depression, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, and other co-occurring disorders. We specialize in treatment of substance abuse including alcohol abuse/addiction, marijuana addiction treatment, heroin addiction treatment, drug abuse/addiction opiate abuse/addiction. Our intensive outpatient treatment program groups meet 3 times a week. We provide a safe, intimate setting wherein individuals can explore their core issues, develop greater self-awareness and self-confidence and learn coping skills as well as interpersonal skills. The Treatment Program will cover the following areas of treatment, with additional content to be added to address the unique needs of group members:

  • Re-establishing or maintaining support systems
  • Gain an understanding of the causes, symptoms and treatment of addiction
  • Developing a solid base of self-esteem
  • Learning healthy boundaries
  • Finding a comfortable spiritual path
  • Learning to express your feelings and needs
  • Developing coping skills
  • Dealing with anxiety and depression, guilt and anger
  • Managing stress
  • Understanding the importance of nutrition in recovery
  • Dealing with family and interpersonal issues

Center For Recovery provides individual counseling, family counseling and intensive outpatient group therapy.

Our mission is to provide education, therapy, support and community resources to enable individuals to achieve their full potential. Most importantly, we focus on the whole person. It is our belief that self-acceptance is the foundation of growth and change. Learning to live a mindful, conscious life requires a commitment to be aware of all the factors that impact actions, purpose, values, and goals. Our groups are offered in Denver and are limited to eight participants per group.
We provide a complete individual assessment for chemical dependency.

Our software service covers the full spectrum of elevator activities from receiving grain at the scale to shipping it to a terminal. We help you keep up with each ticket from the time it is entered until it is settled and the producer receives a check. The customer settlement we produce is simple to understand and shows summary and detail information for all of the tickets that a customer is settling.

On the outbound side, you can easily see just what was shipped to selected destinations, who was responsible for the hauling, and any docks and discounts that were taken by the terminal. The inventory module allows you to see exactly how much of any grain is at your site at any given point in time and provides the details of whether the grain is on open storage, deferred pricing, or owned by the elevator. A daily position report may be produced for any time period for your personal use or for any inspection entity that might be visiting your facility.

Elevator GMS – System Modules

ELEVATOR

The first module is called ELEVATOR and is where incoming grain is processed. This is the area where you enter customer information and incoming scale tickets, produce settlements, print incoming grain reports, sell stored grain, and all of the other functions associated with incoming grain.

Customer information, including customer names, addresses, farm information and contracts, are maintained here. Customer settlements as well as numerous other reports are also produced by this component. If you need to know how much grain was received during the last week, you can obtain that information with a few keystrokes.

SHIPPER

SHIPPER is the second major area of the system and is used to enter and maintain information about grain that is leaving your facility. It can provide you with information about grain destinations, shipping agents, freight costs associated with the transport, and many other types of data.

This component allows you to enter outbound tickets as they exit your facility and later enter the information that was supplied by the destination elevator where the grain was delivered. It is easy to see any discrepancies between what you say was shipped and what the other party says was received. This module also includes a number of other reports.

DAILY POSITION

The final component of the system is known as DAILY and is where you keep up with the position of each of your grains. Information may be automatically transferred from the incoming (ELEVATOR) and outgoing (SHIPPER) tickets so that you do not need to re-enter this information a second time.

You may also make manual adjustments to any position as are required. The main reports in this section are designed to show your position and liability information and are quite useful to the grain inspectors when they are reviewing your situation.

Our ELEVATOR Grain Management System is offered as a software subscription and is hosted on servers in the cloud.

Our servers are maintained in a secure data center and are accessible from a Windows desktop in any location with an Internet connection.

The subscription requires an initial one-time setup fee and an economical monthly subscription fee based on the size of your elevator and the number of concurrent users of the service that you require.

Pricing begins at $100/month for a subscription with up to three (3) concurrent users. The setup fee for this configuration is $250.

Free Trial

We offer a free, 15-day trial period for you to fully evaluate the service and its applicability to your business. The trial includes sample data, a detailed instruction manual, and a link to our online training videos that we have created to help new users in the evaluation process.

If, during your 15-day trial period, you decide to continue with the software service, simply notify our office and we will set up and activate your subscription and begin billing you for the setup and subscription.

If we have not heard back from you by the end of the 15-day trial, your trial will be discontinued automatically.

Customer Support

Included in the subscription price is a reasonable amount of support and training. A detailed instruction manual is included with the software as well as a link to several online videos we have created to teach new users how to use the system.

We also provide a limited amount of test/sample data that allows you to quickly evaluate the usefulness of the product. This data can be easily removed with just a few keystrokes, and you may begin adding your own data when you desire.

Enhancements and updates to the software are made periodically and are included in the subscription price.

We do require that users have an active subscription in order to continue receiving telephone support.

We make every effort to take your calls personally. When we are not available, we have a voice mail system and do our best to respond to your call within two business days.

About Us

Tom King Consulting is a small, family-based business located just outside of Denton, Texas. The business was founded by Tom King in the early 1980s. We lost Tom in early 2016, and since that time, the business has been operated by his wife, Sara, and son, Scott. Tom developed and supplied software for well over four decades, and Scott has been doing the same since the late 1970s. We have deliberately maintained our size and structure in order to maintain reasonable prices and to try to offer the kind of personal service that we appreciate from others.

A Brief Look at Our History

In the early 1980s, Tom received a request to develop a software product to help manage the wheat harvest from his brother-in-law who was operating a grain elevator in Graham, Texas. Tom had been in the computer business for well over twenty years at the time, and after a certain amount of persuasion, he agreed to put something together that would benefit his brother-in-law as well as his sister-in-law who was doing most of the office work. That was the rudimentary beginnings of the Grain Management System that we offer today.

During the next few years, there was some interest shown by other operators, and the system gradually increased in functionality and scope. By about 1988, there was enough interest in the system to gather a number of elevator operators and determine what was required to produce a commercial software product. With their encouragement and support, we went through a complete re-design and re-development of the entire system. At that time, the system we redesigned to use a relational database and was completely DOS based. As we began to see some success in the marketplace during the decade of the 90s, we were issuing new releases of the software about once a year.

In the late 1990s, it became apparent that we would need to make the conversion to Windows. That entailed another major re-design and re-writing of the system and turned out to be the most extensive conversion that we had done to date, requiring a major investment into the product. Even though we had to increase the price slightly, we continued to sell the product for much less than all of our larger competitors. Throughout this period, we continued to make enhancements and improvements to the product and maintained the ability to run under the various versions of Microsoft Windows that have been released.

In 2015, we began offering a cloud-based subscription version of the software, and by early 2017 we anticipate that all of our active customers will be using our cloud-based offering.

    Everything is pretty straight forward. You have Mymathlab and then have to go to her class to get the attendance portion. Overall, the quizzes and exams were easy since there are reviews for them. Only downside is that the teacher is weird and rude.

    I took professor Keane MGF 1107 course last Spring. Easy pass. This blended course is a mix of face to face and online work. All quizzes online. An essay- fun- about a math person. Proctored Midterm and Final. So you need to know your stuff . But professor keane has these reviews in her course. Do them and and understand them. You will get A s.

    Very discouraging individual. Does not grade fairly. You can have perfect attendance do fairly well in most assignments, but she will still fail you. You have to have a combined 60% in tests 2 5 to pass her class. Must show work to get credit. Does not care, will not give any extensions on homework. You may as well take this class online.

    I took her for an MGF1106 Blended online course. Fair as can be – do your homework and show up to class – you will have no problems. She gives reviews for all quizzes and exams, and theyre usually pretty similar to the actual exam. I have struggled with math since high school and I managed a B in this course.

    Her class is a lot of work. You have weekly MyMathLab homework and there are 6 test for which she provides reviews and it s all done at home and an essay. There is a proctored midterm and final for which she also provides reviews. She doesn t teach in class but has narrated powerpoints on blackboard. Attendance is mandatory but she doesn t teach.

    Prof. Keane is pretty annoying can be rude, but overall her class is a piece of joke. HW on MyMathLab, 5 quizzes you take at home which she provides reviews for, they re exactly the same with different # s. Her midterm was EXACTLY like the review, her final? Not so much, so beware for that last exam! Overall, pretty easy A.

    This professor does not teach at all, its a learn yourself type of math class but its not hard if you take notes on the powerpoints on mymathlab. Also for quizzes and midterm/final she gives you reviews MUST DO THEM they are VERY helpful!! The quizzes are done at home with notes and book. Attendance is part of your grade.

    Great professor and great class. its an online class so if you have a life, kids and work. this is a great alternative. she is tough and her attitude can be aggressive at times but we are all adults. if you expect people to baby you your whole life dont take this class. but honestly she is great and is there to help. ill take her again

    Having her as a professor is the equivalence to talking to an operator whenever your DirectTV signal is down. Pointless. She thinks she s witty but she just comes off intolerable. You teach yourself, it s actually humorous that she expects us to refer to her as Dr considering she shows nothing to live up to the title. I don t recommend her.

    This professor really cares. Teaches clearly by demand. We must come to class with questions. Explains to the detail. Tests are so easy because of the reviews she posts in blackboard. Must attend class. Attendance grade.

    MGF1106 online course. Clear syllabus where you do homework (Easy A) and take quizzes after homework is due. Midterm and final (Also easy if you study) and you can practice before hand so you know exactly whats on there. I had a huge family issue and she was understanding about it and we were able to resolve. Forever grateful. I recommend to all.

    Not BAD YOU MUST DO YOUR HOMEWORK

    This was by far the easiest math course I have ever taken. I took the course online and with the help of the online textbook and instructional videos that go with every chapter, it was extremely easy! I did not feel I needed the instructor much though. I used the textbook program to do homework and study. She did not provide much as a teacher.

    The class was blended which means it meets once a week and assignments are mostly online. She is willing to help if the situation arises. I recommend having a study group to achieve the highest grade possible.

    She can be a bit intimidating (don t get her mad). She is helpful, don t expect her to baby you. Ask her for her help. She knows what she s doing and wants everyone to pass. Makes the class easy. You can pass if you put in the work. She really cares about her students and loves to see them take her again! Very proud of her students

    Isn t understanding at all, just an average professor doing there 9 to 5.. make sure you understand how to navigate the online course completely because they don t explain before hand and she doesn t care

    Ms. Keane is a unique type of professor (funny). She explains her class well and is available for office hours. Attendance is not mandatory but if you miss more than two classes in a row you might be dropped. Book is not necessary, MyMathLab is because all homework is there. Practice quizes, quizes and two big tests. Class is pretty simple overall.

    Keane can be very rude sometimes and very condescending but when it comes to the math it s very easy. You take all the quizzes, tests, and homework online, except for the midterm and final. Attendance is mandatory because she will drop you after 2 absences.

    The Nurse Anesthesia concentration prepares the graduate to become a CRNA Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA).

    The front-loaded format includes four terms for didactic course work. During the fifth term, the students begin clinical rotations while completing didactic course work. The final four terms are dedicated full-time to supervised clinical education. The program is completed on campus at UTHSC and near-by clinical agencies.

    Applicants are expected to understand the role, function, demands and expectations of CRNAs within the health care community. This information can be obtained by direct clinical observation of a CRNA and from the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists website.

    Degree concentrations include pathways for those wishing to obtain initial CRNA certification and for APRNs with current CRNA credentials.

    Accreditation

    The University of Tennessee Health Science Center’s College of Nursing Nurse Anesthesia Concentration is accredited by Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs. 222 S. Prospect Ave. Park Ridge, IL, 60068, (847) 655-1160. In May 2009, the program awarded 10 years of continued accreditation. The next onsite visit will be fall 2018, for a May 2019 accreditation decision. In addition, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) accredit the University and College of Nursing. The most recent class of DNP graduates completed the program in May 2016. There was no attrition in this cohort. Employment of graduates within six months of graduation was 100%. Certification examination pass rate for first time takers was 100%.

    DNP Nurse Anesthesia FAQs

    Currently, the clinical sites used by our students include the Methodist Healthcare Systems Hospitals (University, South, North, and Germantown Hospitals and Methodist Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital), the Regional Medical Center, Veterans Affairs Medical Center, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Baptist Memorial Hospital – Desoto (Olive Branch), and Baptist Memorial Hospital – Union County. All the sites are in the greater Memphis area with the exception of our rural experience at Baptist Hospital – Union County in New Albany, MS, which is approximately an hour’s drive from UTHSC campus (61 miles).

    We are fortunate to use local clinical sites which provide a richness of experience serving a wide variety of patients with high-quality anesthesia care. Specialty anesthesia rotations, which occur during the full-time clinical component, include cardiothoracic, pediatric, pediatric oncology, neurosurgical, OB, trauma, pain management, burn, and rural site.

    The number of applicants varies from year to year, but generally there are 3 – 4 applicants for every available seat in the class. The class size has ranged from 15 to 22 in recent years.

    Priority is given to Tennessee Residents. Students who demonstrate critical thinking are highly ranked.

    Tuition costs are determined by in-state or out-of-state status and may change during the program. Additionally, the Educational Common Market may be available for some out-of-state students. Information on this program can be obtained at the Office of Financial Aid. Many employers also offer tuition reimbursement even for part-time employees. Students should also explore the many private scholarship funds available for graduate study in their communities, region, state and nation. A Google search of graduate nursing scholarships will produce vast opportunities. Many diverse groups offer scholarship programs and some states and organizations also have loan repayment programs for nursing education. There are also federal government grants for nursing students.

    Working is strongly discouraged due to the academic rigor and time constraints of the Nurse Anesthesia program.

    ACLS, BCLS, and PALS certifications are required at application and must be maintained throughout the program. CCRN certification is highly recommended.

    One year of full-time critical care experience is a national requirement for admission to all Nurse Anesthesia Programs. In this program, we evaluate each applicant on an individual basis to determine the quality as well as quantity of critical care skills. A minimum of one year of professional nursing experience in adult and/or pediatric critical care is required within two years prior to application.

    There is a program introduction for incoming students in late May. The DNP Nurse Anesthesia program typically begins the first Monday of June, though the start date may vary depending on the calendar for that year.

    Students may enroll in select UTHSC College of Nursing courses with permission from the Academic Dean. You might also take an equivalent graduate-level biostatistics or healthcare economics course at another institution if you seek prior approval from the College of Nursing Dean for Academic Affairs by providing the course syllabus. You must then submit supporting transcript documentation to request actual transfer of credit. Be advised that transferring courses may affect your ability to secure student loans; currently, a minimum 5 credits are required to qualify for part-time status.

    CRNAs certified by the NBCRNA who wish to complete a DNP may do so through the Acute Care Nursing DNP program.

    The Master of Science in Anesthesia program at NSU is dedicated to the education of anesthesiologist assistants, the health care community, and for the care and safety of patients. This unique 27 month AA program consists of an intensive academic and didactic program that will prepare the student to function within the anesthesia care team. The Program will emphasize the clinical education of the anesthesiologist assistant using a state-or-the-art mock operating room with an anesthesia simulator, and hospital based clinical rotations. The students will get an extensive clinical training experience that will consist of a minimum of 2500 clinical hours that encompass all aspects of anesthesia care for the surgical patient. Upon completion of the course of study, students will have earned a Master of Science degree in Anesthesia from Nova Southeastern University.

    The first year of study focuses on the foundations of anesthesia practice through classroom, mock operating room scenarios and studies, and laboratory work. Clinical experience during the first year will increase as the year progress.

    The senior year (semesters 5, 6, 7) will consist of clinical rotations assigned in two week and four week intervals. During the senior year, clinical rotations are full time and involve all specialty areas in anesthesia, including general surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, otolaryngology, orthopedics, neurosurgery, ophthalmology, genito-urinary surgery, vascular surgery, cardiac surgery, thoracic surgery, transplantation, and trauma. Clinical rotations include days, evenings, nights, weekends, and call – depending upon the rotation.

    NSU’s Master of Science in Anesthesia program will prepare the student for the national certification exam that is administered by the National Board of Medical Examiners under the auspices of the National Commission for the Certification of Anesthesiologist Assistants. The certification process involves successfully completing the Certifying Examination for Anesthesiologist Assistants for initial certification; registration of continuing medical education credits every two years; and successful competition of the Examination for Continued Demonstration of Qualifications every six years.

    Treating an Addiction to Painkillers

    Opioid addiction isn’t a moral or mental weakness. It’s a chronic medical condition that results from changes in the brain in susceptible people. Once narcotic addiction has developed, escaping the cycle of detox and relapse is typically a long-term process.

    Breaking free of prescription drug abuse takes much more than willpower. Fortunately, medications and counseling can improve the chances of success. Newer drugs like buprenorphine (sometimes combined with naloxone. a combination called Suboxone), naltrexone (given by mouth as the drug Revia or by a monthly injection called Vivitrol ), and traditional therapies like methadone along with12-step programs are helping thousands of people stay on the road to recovery.

    Physical Dependence and Detoxification

    Narcotic addiction leads to real changes in certain areas of the brain. Prescription drug addiction alters the circuits responsible for mood and “reward” behaviors.

    In addition, long-term prescription drug abuse affects virtually all the systems in the body. Cutting off the supply abruptly leads to opioid withdrawal symptoms.

    Symptoms of opioid withdrawal include:

    But for someone with an established narcotic addiction, a list of symptoms doesn’t capture the agony of opioid withdrawal. The syndrome is intensely unpleasant, and people will do almost anything to avoid it.

    Opioid withdrawal lasts from hours to several days — and sometimes weeks — depending on how long and how much a person has used their drug of choice. After the intense initial symptoms subside, some physical and mental discomfort may persist for weeks.

    Medications for Opioid Withdrawal

    Opioid withdrawal is difficult to endure, and is a major reason for relapse and continued prescription drug abuse. Medications are used to prevent symptoms of opioid withdrawal during detox, easing the person out of physical dependence:

    Methadone is a long-acting opioid drug. It activates the same opioid receptors as other narcotics, effectively eliminating withdrawal symptoms. Providing the correct dose of methadone prevents opioid withdrawal symptoms and eases drug craving but it does not provide the euphoria. The dose can be slowly tapered off, freeing the person from physical dependence without withdrawal symptoms. Methadone is the most effective known treatment for narcotic addiction.

    Buprenorphine alone (Subutex ) or buprenorphine plus naloxone (Suboxone) is a newer drug that helps with detox from opioid addiction. Buprenorphine activates opioid receptors, reducing drug craving and preventing withdrawal. Naloxone helps prevent misuse of the medication. Subutex is typically used for acute opiate detoxification, while Suboxone is used either for acute detoxification or maintenance prevention of opiate relapse.

    Clonidine is a blood pressure medicine that acts on the brain. Clonidine reduces the effects of the “fight or flight” response, which is over-activated during opioid withdrawal. However, clonidine does not reduce drug craving and is less effective when used alone.

    “Rapid detox” programs claim to accelerate the process of detox and opioid withdrawal by giving large doses of opioid blocking drugs. Some programs place an addict under general anesthesia during the detox process. These programs have not proven to be more effective than traditional methods of detox, and may be more dangerous.

    Maintenance Therapy After Detox

    Completing detox subdues the physical effects of narcotic addiction and opioid withdrawal. But experts say psychological and social factors are the main drivers that push addicts back to using. Stress and situations that remind the brain of the drug’s pleasure are common triggers.

    When drug cravings strike, they can be extremely hard to resist. Most people who only go through detox and short-term counseling without maintenance treatment will most likely relapse to prescription drug abuse.

    Studies show that the chances of beating narcotic addiction are better with long-term maintenance therapy with either methadone or buprenorphine paired with naloxone (Zubsolv, Bunavail, Suboxone) . These drugs are used during the maintenance phase of treatment. People on these drugs are still opioid-dependent, but they are often freed from their destructive drug addiction. They can return to work, drive without impairment, and function normally in society. Naloxone has also been combined with oxycontin ( Targiniq ER ) to deter abuse by snorting or injecting the drug. A person can still become addicted by taking it orally, however.

    Methadone is the best-studied, most effective method of recovery from narcotic addiction. Suboxone, while newer, has gained wide acceptance as maintenance therapy.

    A form of buprenorphone than can be implanted under the skin (called Probuphine ) is now available to help prevent opiate relapse in people who have already completed detox and are stable on an oral form of buprenorphine. It provides a constant dose of buprenorphine for six months.

    Some people have a high rate of relapse when maintenance therapy is stopped, and so they remain on the medicines indefinitely. In others, maintenance therapy is tapered off over months to years.

    Naltrexone (ReVia, Vivitrol) is an opiate receptor-blocking medication used in maintenance therapy for narcotic addiction. Unlike methadone and Suboxone, naltrexone does not activate receptors at all, so it does not reduce opioid withdrawal or craving. However, because naltrexone blocks opiate receptors, a person won’t get high if he or she uses drugs while taking the medicine. The drug is is most effective when used as part of a broader comprehensive recovery treatment program.

    Counseling and 12-Step Programs

    Narcotics Anonymous (NA) is an international network of community-based meetings for those recovering from drug addiction. Modeled after Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), NA is a 12-step program with a defined process for overcoming narcotic addiction.

    NA is an abstinence-based program. In principle, NA is opposed to the use of maintenance therapy. Methadone Anonymous is a 12-step program that acknowledges the value of methadone or Suboxone in recovery from narcotic addiction.

    Most experts and treatment centers recommend participation in a 12-step-based treatment program or other form of counseling. Therapy can take place as an outpatient, or in a residential facility. Alternatives to 12-step-based programs include:

    • Cognitive behavioral therapy
    • Motivational interviewing
    • Family and couples therapy

    Recovery from prescription drug addiction can be expensive. However, it is far less costly in comparison with the cost of addiction and continuous use of drugs.

    The Benefits of an Accelerated MBA

    The popularity of accelerated online MBA programs can be attributed to the fact that these one-year degrees save students both time and money. Students are becoming less willing and able to spend two years out of the workforce, and an accelerated MBA program allows them to enhance their job potential without losing valuable time.

    According to a survey conducted in part by The Wall Street Journal, 82 percent of students and alumni cited the ability to re-enter the workforce faster as a top factor in choosing a one-year MBA. Additionally, many accelerated online MBA programs cost less than their two-year counterparts. So, the lower cost, plus the fact that students will be able to make money with their degrees sooner, make an accelerated online MBA an excellent option financially.

    Various Accelerated Choices

    Many schools offer accelerated online MBA programs geared toward individual student goals. A great example is the varied accelerated MBA program available at Suffolk University. The Accelerated MBA for Previous Business Majors allows students with undergraduate business experience to opt out of as many as eight courses of the traditional 18-class MBA program. Suffolk offers a similar arrangement with its Accelerated MBA for Attorneys. The GMAT is waived during admission with documentation of LSAT scores. The business law course is waived, and four elective credits are transferred from the student’s law school degree. This shortens the traditional Suffolk MBA program by at least five courses, and students are able to graduate after 10 to 13 classes. Suffolk also offers an Accelerated MBA for CPAs, which works in the same way.

    More and more schools are starting to offer accelerated versions of their online MBA programs. However, it is important to ensure that an MBA degree is awarded as a year-long program. The term accelerated is sometimes used to describe two-year programs as well. Two schools that offer quality one-year online MBA programs, designed to take only 10 to 15 months to complete, are Babson College and the University of Florida. In fact, both schools placed among the top 10 one-year MBA programs in rankings by Macquil.com. Also, the business programs at the University of Florida are accredited by the AACSB, and, according to the school website, the university was recently recognized as having one of only two distance-learning programs in the world to earn the rating of excellent by The Economist magazine.

    Accelerated Versus General

    Classes will move more quickly in an accelerated online MBA program than in a typical one. More information will be covered per class, and tests will be more intense and more frequent. An accelerated program is geared toward students with extensive backgrounds in business, usually bachelor’s degrees in business combined with at least two years of professional experience. Course work will start at a more advanced level than that of a general MBA. Rather than reviewing basic business concepts, students will delve directly into the practice of those concepts. Accelerated programs are often tied to a school’s general MBA program. For example, students of the one-year MBA online at Babson College begin the program in May with an intense 12-week summer program. Then, students take their elective courses along with second-year students of the general MBA programs. This means that students need to have already taken a significant number of business courses before entering a one-year program. The prerequisites for the Babson program include Financial Accounting, Managerial Accounting, Finance, Statistics, Quantitative Foundations of Decision Support Systems, Strategy, Operations Management, Organizational Behavior, Marketing, Microeconomics, Macroeconomics and Business Law.

    Despite the current popularity of accelerated online MBA programs, there are definite pros and cons to the shortened style. According to The Wall Street Journal survey, almost two-thirds of students in one-year online MBA programs spent more than 15 hours per week on schoolwork beyond lectures and class discussions. Combine that with an intense course load, and students in accelerated programs have little time for anything other than studying, working and sleeping. Some students surveyed said they felt exhausted by the fast-paced curriculum and some mentioned not having had enough time to fully absorb case studies. However, there are many benefits to such an intense and fast-paced course schedule. Some students and alumni reported that the intensity of the accelerated program helped fuel constant engagement with the material and close bonds with classmates.

    Students in one-year online MBA programs will get less of an opportunity to network with their classmates and get career assistance from administrators than those on a regular track. Students in the faster-paced programs have little time for internships or consulting projects, which means less of a chance to make company contacts. According to The Wall Street Journal, many such students had problems with their career-service departments not doing enough to help them make contacts or create career paths. Much of this is due, in part, to the fact that there just isn’t time in an accelerated program for students or school administrators to reach out, but another factor is the reality that an accelerated program is created for students with extensive business experience. This can be a turnoff to students who are looking to change careers and make industry contacts; they may need more connection opportunities and should consider two-year programs. Students with years of experience are less likely to require internship opportunities or career assistance, so they may not see accelerated programs as lacking.

    Prerequisites:

    • High school diploma or GED.
    • Must apply and be accepted into RCTC.
    • Minimum GPA of 2.0 – calculated from the past 5 years of college credits.
    • Demonstrated college level reading and writing skills required. (**)
    • Completion of Math 0094 or CHEM 1101 or higher with a C or better or equivalent test score. (**)
    • Successful completion of a Nursing Assistant course (NA 1500) or active-status on the MN Registry.
    • Health 1110 or equivalent BLS For Healthcare must be completed prior to classes beginning in August – online certification is not acceptable.
    • ATI TEAS exam – offered monthly at RCTC

    Application and Admission Structure:

    All students interested in applying to the Practical Nursing Diploma program will be required to take the ATI Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) to determine eligibility for application.

    1. This exam is offered at RCTC.
    2. TEAS test needs to be completed by the application deadline date.
    3. Students will only be allowed to take the test twice in a twelve month period and the best score will be used for ranking purposes. The score will be valid for two years.

    1. The combined total TEAS composite score and cumulative GPA will be utilized to rank applicants.
    2. TEAS composite score divided by a factor of 10 (Ex: Composite score of 72% = 7.2). TEAS scores are valid for two years.
    3. Cumulative GPA – all grades from all institutions from the previous 5 years will be included in calculation.
    4. In the event of a tied combined total TEAS composite score and GPA, the applicant with the highest TEAS science sub-score will advance in rank. If a further tie exists, the applicant with the highest TEAS English sub-score will advance in rank.
    5. Applications of students not accepted into the program each round will not be retained. If a student chooses to reapply, the student must resubmit the entire application for the next admission cycle.

    What Are the Treatments for Down Syndrome?

    If your child is born with Down syndrome. you want to be able to make informed choices about treatments that can help your little one thrive.

    Because Down syndrome affects everyone who has it in different ways, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to treatment. But doctors do know that the earlier children get care, the more likely they are to live up to their full potential.

    Your child may need help in different ways, from crawling and walking to talking and learning how to be social. She may also need extra attention in school. And she may have medical issues that need regular care.

    You’ll likely rely on a team of providers, including your child’s main doctor, and maybe specialists like ear doctors, heart doctors, and others. Your child may also work with physical, occupational, and speech therapists.

    Early Intervention

    Most states offer programs that provide a range of services for children up to 3 years old. These programs can boost your child’s physical and mental growth. They typically have therapists and teachers who are specially trained to help kids learn a variety of skills, such as how to:

    • Feed and dress themselves
    • Roll over, crawl, and walk
    • Play and be around other people
    • Think and solve problems
    • Talk, listen, and understand others

    Help in School

    Many kids with Down syndrome go to their neighborhood schools along with all the other kids. This can be great not only for your child, but for the other children as well.

    Your child also has the right to get services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), which starts at age 3. IDEA requires public schools to offer the best education they can, no matter what challenges a person faces.

    As part of this effort, you’ll work with the school to develop an individualized education program (IEP). This helps make sure your child gets support that suits her needs. It may include things like working with a reading specialist or speech therapist.

    While public schools work great for many children, there other types of schools that focus more on the needs of kids with Down syndrome. Your child’s doctors, therapists, and teachers can help figure out which is best for her.

    Medical Treatment

    Some health problems are more common in kids with Down syndrome. Many children don’t have them, but if yours does, you can get treatment for:

    Hearing loss . Many children with Down syndrome have hearing loss in one or both ears. Because of that, your child will likely have regular visits with an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) doctor to catch any issues early on. Sometimes hearing problems are caused by fluid build-up in the ears. In that case, ear tubes — which many children get if they have constant ear infections –can help.

    Problems seeing. Issues with eyesight are also common. Your child will have regular check-ups with an eye doctor and may need glasses, surgery, or other treatment. It’s important to keep up with ear and eye exams. because problems seeing and hearing can lead to delays in learning and talking.

    Heart problems. About half the babies born with Down syndrome have a problem with either the shape of their heart or how it works. Some conditions are more serious than others and require surgery. In other cases, your child may need to take medicine.

    Obstructive sleep apnea. This is a condition where a person’s breathing stops and restarts many times as they sleep. Typically, a child with Down syndrome gets checked for sleep apnea by age 4. During an overnight sleep test, doctors check to see if your child’s breathing stops and restarts. If so, she may need to wear a mask while sleeping. The mask is attached to a machine that helps her breathe normally. Sometimes, larger-than-normal tonsils and adenoids cause sleep apnea. In this case, your doctor may suggest surgery to remove them.

    Leukemia. Children with Down syndrome are at a 10- to 20-fold increase for developing this blood cancer. But the risk is still at 2%. Leukemia is curable.

    Thyroid. Thyroid disorders are more prevalent in children with Down syndrome.

    Other medical problems. Your child may also have other less common issues that need treatment, such as:

    • Blockage in the intestine. Some babies with Down syndrome get Hirschsprung ’s disease, where part of the intestine gets blocked. This is treated with surgery that removes part of the intestine.
    • Infections. Babies with Down syndrome also have weaker immune systems, so they may get sick more often. There’s no treatment for this, but it means that getting vaccines on time is even more important.
    • Thyroid problems . The thyroid makes hormones your body need. In kids with Down syndrome, it sometimes doesn’t make enough. If that happens, your child will take medicine to help.

    Effective SAP Project Managers – SAP Program Managers Deliver Results #erp

    SAP Project Success

    In all the years I’ve been involved with SAP I’ve often puzzled about what makes a really good project rather than some of the freak shows they call SAP projects. After involvement in over 20 SAP projects I’ve seen a few of them go really well, a few that were more like horror shows, but most were mediocre. I’ve often asked myself “Why?” What makes the difference between a good project and one that is nothing short of a mess?

    One key item that stands out is project management. Even with the most talented and dedicated resources bad project management can ruin an otherwise great SAP project.

    I don’t blame client project managers because if they had all of the resources they would not need outside help and guidance.

    Before I get into this, let me define what I consider a “good” project. A good project is one where there is a lot to do, but the stress level is not intense. The timeline may be tight but it is achievable (maybe a little bit of a stretch). The project is delivered on time, on budget, within scope and the result is high quality (a fairly smooth transition without a chaotic go-live).

    Methodology Considerations for a Good SAP Project or SAP Program

    The list below is from a synthesis of materials from SAP’s ASAP methodology, the PMI (Project Management Institute), and my personal experience over the years. Much of this is contained in the SAP ASAP methodology in one form or another so you really have to wonder what any consultant is following if they claim to use it and these items are lacking. In fact the latest ASAP Methodology version 7.1 includes a project start-up checklist to ensure key components are addressed.

    Unlike several years ago when contract project managers had to rely on experience alone the SAP ASAP Methodology is well-proven and mature today.

    There are several key characteristics of a well managed SAP project which includes:

    Early SAP Project or Program Management Activities (Before the Overall SAP Project is Fully Underway)

    • Success criteria defined and communicated for the project.
    • One of the first things that is defined for the project are the key roles, responsibilities, and tasks that will be performed by each participant group in the project.
    • A clear, definitive project plan with WBS elements, networks, and activities planned for every major work-stream throughout the entire timeline.
    • A clear list of deliverables, milestones, templates, and instructions on their usage are provided for the entire project.
    • Deliverables are clearly tied to project value rather than useless administrative exercises (value added activities) (see SAP System Vendor Project Success Criteria Factors 1 scroll down to Sections 8 and 9 ).
    • Scope, time, issues, risk, cost, communication, and integration management plans, together with additional key components are defined.
    • Various standards for the project are defined and documented, including but not limited to business process, development, configuration, enhancement, transport management, testing, etc.

    If you are using outside contract project management resources and these items are not substantially in place by the time you start your project you will likely have your timeline and budget destroyed. Along with the blown schedule and budget your project will also be a pressure cooker filled with stress, anxiety, and frustration. These are also characteristics you find when an SAP project manager or SAP program manager is not qualified. The chaos, tension, stress, and confusion caused by their inability to coordinate the many moving parts of the project are a direct result of their lack of experience and ability.

    I don’t blame client project managers because if they had all of the resources they would not need outside help and guidance.

    The project should be delivered on time, on budget, within scope and with high quality

    Conclusion on Effective SAP Project or Program Management Practices

    You are headed for a project disaster when a contract SAP project manager or SAP program manager fails to ensure the following items are in place early in the project:

    • responsibilities by group and role are defined,
    • deliverables are well laid out,
    • templates are properly prepared,
    • forward looking expectations are set,
    • coordination occurs between all project groups,
    • etc.

    I’ve only ever been on a few projects when the SAP project manager or SAP program manager failed to produce a properly detailed project plan. Every one of those projects had one thing in common, they were absolutely horrendously stressful, difficult, and took more time and cost more than necessary. Along with the failure to produce a proper project plan the lack of proper deliverables, proper roles and responsibilities, and all of the other things a good project plan would help you define were also missing. If this happens to you FIRE those contractors, you are being bled dry and are headed for a budget and timeline disaster.

    The Environmental Sciences Graduate Program offers the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Environmental Sciences.

    Advanced training in Environmental Sciences is becoming increasingly necessary to address complex problems involving natural resources and environmental quality. Although this task frequently requires specialized knowledge in various fields of science, it also requires understanding and integration of a wide variety of interacting physical, chemical, biological, and societal influences. This interaction makes graduate study in environmental sciences distinct from many other scientific fields. We have designed our program to offer graduate training in a number of specialized focus areas within environmental sciences, operating within a single graduate degree program administered by the Department of Environmental Sciences. Students trained in the Environmental Sciences Graduate Program can fill many areas of expertise needed in the state and nation. Potential career opportunities exist at regulatory agencies, consulting firms, government and academic research institutions, and industrial research facilities.

    Fall Quarter Admissions Priority Deadline: December 1

    The Environmental Sciences Graduate Program offers graduate training in:

    Master‘s Degree

    The Department of Environmental Sciences offers the M.S. degree in Environmental Sciences under the Plan I (Thesis) and Plan II (Comprehensive Examination) options. The general requirements for the M.S. degree are found in the Announcement of the Graduate Division.

    Plan I (Thesis)

    Students must complete a minimum of 36 quarter units of graduate and upper-division undergraduate courses in, or significantly related to, environmental sciences. At least 24 of the 36 units must be in graduate courses. A maximum of 12 of these units may be in graduate research for the thesis. No more than 4 units of ENSC 290 and 2 units of graduate seminar courses may be applied toward the degree. A thesis must be written and accepted by the M.S. thesis committee members, and a final oral defense of the thesis must be passed. Students also will be required to give a presentation annually at the Environmental Sciences Graduate Program Student Symposium.

    Plan II (Comprehensive Examination)

    Students must complete a minimum of 36 quarter units of graduate and upper-division undergraduate courses in, or significantly related to, environmental sciences. At least 18 units must be in graduate courses. Students may count no more than 2 units of graduate seminar courses and 6 units of graduate internship courses toward the required 18 units and no units from graduate research for thesis or dissertation.

    Students must take a comprehensive written examination that covers fundamental topics in environmental sciences. The written examination, which is three to four hours long, is prepared and evaluated by a committee appointed by the field director. The examination is taken during the latter part of the final quarter in the M.S. program. Students must wait at least eight weeks before retaking a failed examination. Students failing the examination twice are dismissed from the program.

    Normative Time to Degree

    Doctoral Degree

    The Department of Environmental Sciences offers the Ph.D. degree in Environmental Sciences. The general requirements for the Ph.D. degree are found in the Announcement of the Graduate Division.

    Course Work

    Students must complete the course requirements and will be required to give a presentation annually at the Environmental Sciences Graduate Program Student Symposium.

    Comprehensive Written Examination

    Following completion of all coursework prescribed by the student’s Advisory Committee, a written qualifying examination will be prepared and administered to the student by a Written Qualifying Examination Committee. The Written Qualifying Examination Committee will consist of at least three faculty members with interests in the student‘s line of research. The purpose of the written qualifying examination is to determine that the student has gained sufficient knowledge in the chosen field to perform professionally and competently. The written exam may be attempted only twice. If the written qualifying exam is failed twice, the student will be redirected to the M.S. degree or terminated from the program.

    Oral Examination

    A student who satisfactorily passes the written qualifying examination may proceed with the oral qualifying examination, which will focus on the dissertation proposal. The oral examination is conducted before the Oral Qualifying Examination Committee, consisting of five faculty members, one of whom must be from outside the ESGP. The oral examination may be attempted only twice. If the oral qualifying exam is failed twice, the student will be redirected to the M.S. degree or terminated from the program. The written and oral comprehensive examinations will normally be taken at the end of the second year of graduate study and before the start of the third year.

    Dissertation

    All Ph.D. students must write a doctoral dissertation, which must be read and accepted by all members of the Doctoral Dissertation Committee, comprised of at least three faculty members from the ESGP. A final oral thesis defense in front of the three committee members must be passed.

    Relationship between Master‘s and Doctoral Programs The M.S. and Ph.D. programs are separate. Students who enter the Ph.D. program do not need to acquire a M.S. degree first, although students may elect to take both.

    See this Hazardous Waste Determination Guidance document for information and links to resources to help you determine whether or not your waste is hazardous.

    Hazardous Chemical Waste

    Federal and State regulations define hazardous wastes as a substance which poses a hazard to human health or the environment when improperly managed. A chemical waste is considered hazardous if it is either listed on one of the lists found in Federal or State regulations or if it exhibits one or more of the four following characteristics:

    1. Ignitable – ignitable wastes generally are liquids with a flash point below 60 C or 140 F (however, just because a material has a higher flash point, it still cannot be drain disposed).
    2. Corrosive – corrosive wastes are generally aqueous wastes with a pH less than or equal to two (2) or greater than or equal to 12.5 (although UCLA policy includes any waste that is not neutral).
    3. Reactive – reactive wastes are those wastes that are unstable, explosive, capable of detonation or react violently with water.
    4. Toxic – a chemical that poses a hazard to health or the environment (this can be a gray area).

    What are the guidelines for handling hazardous chemical waste?

    The proper management of hazardous waste is essential to protect the health and safety of the University community and to ensure compliance with laws and regulations.

    Make sure that no hazardous materials are placed into regular solid waste containers, flushed down the drain or otherwise inappropriately disposed. If there is any doubt, contact EH S Hazardous Waste Operations at (951) 827-4248 or (951) 827-5518.

    Whenever possible, store flammable waste liquids and waste corrosive liquids in a cabinet designed for storage of these classes of chemicals.

    Containers marked with biohazard or radioactive warning labels only are not acceptable for chemical or mixed waste disposal. Never use orange biohazard bags, these are illegal in California. All chemical waste must be accumulated and stored in appropriate containers. This does not include red biohazard bags.

    Good housekeeping must be maintained at all times in any designated hazardous waste storage location. All storage containers should be inspected daily to monitor for leaks or storage practice deficiencies that could lead to leaks or spills. A container holding hazardous waste must always be closed during storage, except when it is necessary to add or remove waste.

    The use of secondary contaiment is necessary to guard against leaking material escaping in such a manner that will compromise safety or the environment.

    What are the requirements for handling biohazardous and medical waste?

    1. Label a red biohazard bag with building and room number before filling it.
      For research Plant and Soil waste only, clear bag with red biohazard symbol is preferred.
    2. Place the waste in the red biohazard bag (orangebags are illegal in California). Do not place glass pipettes or anything that will puncture the plastic bag. Rigid objects such as transfer pipettes can be decontaminated by exposure to a 10% household bleach solution for at least 30 minutes.
    3. Place autoclavetape on the bag to confirm autoclave attainment of adequate sterilization conditions.
    4. Contaminated waste must be stored in a labeled, rigid, puncture-proof container with a tight-fitting lid and biohazard symbol on all visible sides and the top.
    5. To dispose waste after autoclaving, take the biohazard bag directly to the building dumpster or make special arrangements with building services.
    6. All waste must be decontaminated and disposed within seven ( 7) days of generation if stored at a temperature above 0 C.
    7. All waste must be disposed within 90 days if stored at or below 0 C.
    8. Place all sharps in a red sharps container that is rigid, leak proof, and has the international biohazard symbol. Do not fill container more than full.

    What are autoclave requirements for biohazard and medical waste treatment?

    2. The autoclave must have a chart recorder. All charts must be dated and kept by the department for three ( 3) years.
    3. All waste treatment runs must be listed on the autoclave log and the logs must be kept by the department for three ( 3) years.

    1. Biohazardous and medical waste storage areas must have warning signs on, or adjacent to, exterior doors, gates, or lids in English and Spanish:

    2. Update the sharps container tag status in WASTe to Ready for Pickup and EH S will pick up the container.

    How do I request new sharps containers from EH S?

    How do I request replacement sharps containers using WASTe?

    1. If you have a sharps container for pickup, create a Biological tag type in WASTe, click the checkbox at Replacement Sharps Container? If you are using the Chemical tag type, request replacement sharps container at Comments.
    2. Update the sharps container tag status in WASTe to Ready for Pickup and EH S will pick up the sharps container and bring a replacement.

    What are the guidelines for handling physically hazardous waste (sharps)?

    Uncontaminated broken glass and other sharp objects must be placed in a box for broken glass. Boxes designed to collect broken glass are available thought a varity of vendors including the UCR Campus Storehouse and Fisher Safety.

        The Small Business Improvement Fund (SBIF) program uses Tax Increment Financing (TIF) revenues to help owners of commercial and industrial properties within specific TIF districts to repair or remodel their facilities for their own business or on behalf of tenants.

    SBIF Grants/Completed Projects Database

    Program participants can receive matching grants to cover up to half the cost of remodeling work, with a maximum grant amount of $150,000. The grant does not have to be repaid.

    To help local industrial companies expand and create employment oportunties for Chicago residents.

    Qualifications and Restrictions
    Expenses eligible for a SBIF grant include:

    If there is a student who could successfully present a GRE, it’s you because you’re applying for a dual degree. Your GRE score translates to a 690 GMAT and you are obviously interested in top schools like Harvard, Stanford and Wharton. If you are going to present a 690 GMAT, you are better off reporting it as a GRE score because it won’t hurt a school’s ranking. That is just an issue for general consumption.

    You have a resume full of prestige organizations and schools. And your story about what you’ve done and what you want to do makes sense. It is a tightly-knit story..

    You’re a class act. You have such a tight narrative that the dual-degree may make sense for you. But I personally don’t recommend getting a dual-degree. I think it is a waste of a year and a waste of money. Here’s why: If you are shrewd about the way you handle the MBA, you can get the schmooze value of the dual-degree your second year. For instance, let’s say you want to go to Harvard Business School and the Kennedy School. My advice is just go to HBS and spend your second year schmooze around the Kennedy School. You can make all the contacts and you can save yourself a year of tuition and a year’s worth of income. In your second year, you could take a good number of the Kennedy school courses by cross registering there.

    You have real Stanford DNA. The only boo-boo is your low GRE, but I think your chances are really good and even better at HBS. Wharton may say, What is this person doing here? Wharton has a special person who recruits people for social enterprise, but Wharton might take a close look at this and say this gal is going to Stanford or Harvard.

    The Role of Executive Management in ERM

    Ultimate responsibility for ERM starts at the top. However, everyone who matters within an organization should participate in the ERM process.

    While several executives have significant responsibilities for ERM, including the Chief Risk Officer, Chief Financial Officer, Chief Legal Officer and Chief Audit Executive, the ERM process works best when all key managers of the organization contribute. The COSO ERM framework states that managers of the organization “support the entity’s risk management philosophy, promote compliance with its risk appetite and manage risks within their [respective] spheres of responsibility consistent with risk tolerances.” Therefore, identifying leaders throughout the organization and gaining their support is critical to successful implementation of ERM.

    A goal of ERM is to incorporate risk considerations into the organization’s agenda and decision-making processes. This means that ultimately, every manager is responsible, which can only happen when performance goals, including the related risk tolerances, are clearly articulated, and the appropriate individuals are held accountable for results.

    The COSO framework states that the CEO “is ultimately responsible and should assume ownership” over the implementation of ERM. Because ERM, as COSO defined it, is integral to running and managing a business, the CEO’s involvement is vital to the success of ERM.

    For example, an effective ERM process affects the organization’s risk culture because it establishes an environment where people can raise their hands and express concerns about a deal, transaction, project or business plan without fear of retribution. This kind of open and positive environment is not possible without the CEO’s active and visible support. The CEO sets the tone by asking the tough questions about risk and risk management and by demonstrating a commitment to raise the focus of risk management to a strategic level.

    A point that is often omitted in this discussion is that it is important to the CEO that he or she be involved in the process. The CEO’s active participation keeps the focus at a strategic level. The CEO wants to know the answers to such questions as:

    • What is it that we don’t know that could erode or cause irreparable harm to our reputation and brand image?
    • What are the soft spots in our business plan that could result in failure to deliver the financial results we expect?
    • What are the critical assumptions underlying our strategy over the planning horizon? Are we monitoring the external environment for changes that could render one or more of those assumptions invalid?
    • If we were to lose a key component of the supply chain or distribution channel, would we be able to continue operations? If not, how long would it take to recover?
    • Are there any unknown exposures to events that can abruptly shift the organization’s agenda to “damage control” in a heartbeat should they occur?
    • If such exposures exist, what can be done cost effectively to prevent these potential future events from happening, and how will our organization respond should the events occur?
    • Based on the answers to the above questions, what do we do differently going forward?

    ERM can help supply the CEO with answers to these and other questions, if he or she is sufficiently involved to ensure the process is appropriately focused on the strategic and reputation risks that matter. In summary, support from the top is vital to an effectively functioning ERM process.

    Opportunity-seeking behavior is invigorated if senior management possesses the confidence that they understand the related risks and have the capabilities in place to manage those risks. In a rapidly changing world, traditional risk management approaches will not be effective because they are fragmented, treating risks as disparate events and easily compartmentalized in silos. While the tight focus of traditional risk management activities on loss prevention is not a bad thing, neither is it a good enough thing because the activities are not adequately integrated with the identification, evaluation and pursuit of growth opportunities. Moreover, current risk management approaches are too firmly rooted in the command-and-control era, which means they may not effectively balance the desire for control with the need for agility, responsiveness and cross-functional cooperation. That is why executive management must own the ERM process.

    An enterprise-wide approach to business risk management will help executives meet the challenges they face by improving the linkage of risk and opportunity during the strategy-setting process and positioning risk management as a differentiating skill in managing the business. The COSO framework provides insights into the question of how executive management evaluates the application of ERM within the organization. The four categories of objectives, the extent of application (across the entity and its divisions and business units) and the eight components of ERM, as defined by the COSO framework, provide the basis for that evaluation. Executive management must evaluate the appropriate ERM prose and supporting infrastructure the organization needs in place to realize its chosen risk management vision, goals and objectives.

    Every ERM solution is impacted by technology in various ways. Enterprise software solutions are informational tools that act as an enabler for ERM, particularly for purposes of managing non-financial risks. As companies configure risk measurement systems to work seamlessly with enterprise performance management systems, they will consolidate much more information. The most elegant solution is to leverage the existing executive reporting system as much as possible. Depending on the complexity and strategic importance of these systems and the number of internal stakeholders involved, the CIO will play a key role in this integration process.

    As they focus on investment and return, on opportunity and reward and on competitive advantage and growth, CEOs and their management teams must pursue promising – though uncertain – opportunities in the face of changing market conditions. They must be in a position to confidently assure investors and other stakeholders that the organization is managing risk effectively. They must also comply with applicable laws and regulations. An effective ERM process can assist them in accomplishing these objectives.

    Counseling Education Program Mission Statement

    The Counselor Education Program at Eastern Washington University is committed to the selection, training, supervision, and professional success of counseling students, in keeping with the high standards established by the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). As a regional teaching university, EWU has a proud history of providing education to a high percentage of first generation college students, often from under-represented and lower socioeconomic communities, a tradition which the Counselor Education program maintains. Thus, counselor training occurs in a learning community that is intentionally focused on both skills development and personal growth of the counselor-in-training. In this way, Counselor Education fulfills its purpose of preparing competent and caring professional counselors to meet the needs of diverse urban and rural communities.

    Classes and experiences are organized to provide thorough instruction in the skills and knowledge generally recognized by the counseling profession to be effective with a K-12 population. Candidates not only focus on the following in the graduate classroom, but also for the K-12 population he or she will serve: academic, career, and personal/social development. The program is not only accredited by CACREP, but is approved by the Washington State Professional Educator Standards Board (PESB). Graduates of the program meet the requirements to become an Educational Staff Associate (ESA), the credential held by School Counselors.

    Candidates of the program will have education and experiences shaped by the ASCA (American School Counseling Association) National Model. They also have opportunity to be mentored by professionals in the community while they complete an internship. This relationship helps guide the candidate in construction of a professional portfolio, which is a product of the knowledge and skills gained through the graduate experience. Themes include leadership, advocacy, collaboration, and systemic change, which are incorporated into the components of the ASCA model. The components are foundation, management, accountability, and delivery. Instruction includes all of these aspects, along with the CACREP core competencies, providing graduates with a solid entry point for a rewarding career.

    A student enrolled in this program can expect to graduate in 21 months or 6 academic quarters over 2 academic years. We have a 100% on-time completion rate once a student begins. Resident tuition for the school couneling program is $21,906.96 for two years (2016-2017) and non-resident tuition is $50,876.76 for two years. Fees for two academic year average around $1200.00 and estimated book costs for the program for 2 years is $1000.00.     Approximately 40 students were enrolled in the program with an estimated 75% graduation rate during the 2013-2014. Average completion rate is typically higher and ranges between 85% and 100%. The Program accepts a variable number of students each year, but is typically 24-30 with 50% in each emphasis – meaning 12 school counseling candidates. Eighty percent of accepted students graduate in the expected time period, two years for full-time students. Courses accommodate only full-time students. When a student graduates from this program, he or she is able to enter the workforce at the MA + 45 level at any school district in Washington.

    6 ways to get out of debt fast

    When it comes to tackling debt, most of us know what to do: Spend less . save more. But if it were really that simple, Canadians wouldn’t be so mired in red ink. Stephanie Holmes is a Nova Scotia-based financial advisor and author of Diffusing the Debt Bomb and $pent. who recognizes that there is no easy answer to any debt problem.

    Holmes offers small tweaks that will help you speed up your repayment and get out of debt faster.

    6 ways to get out of debt:

    1. Pay bills every pay day
    Most debt statements are due monthly, but most salaries are paid every two weeks. So pay part of every bill, every time you get paid. Benefit: smaller amounts feel more manageable and the chance of missing a payment (and incurring a penalty and more interest) is reduced.

    Automate bill payments so that you pay your creditors without having to write a cheque or log on to an online account.

    Ratchet it up a notch: Let’s say your credit card minimum payment is $100. Pay $60 every two weeks and you’ll make more headway with over payments you barely notice.

    2. Change your debt structure
    When it comes to debt vehicles and the lending institutions that have extended them, “the fewest number possible means the least amount of effort and stress,” says Holmes.

    If you want to get out of debt . get rid of the retail credit cards, since they have onerous interest rates compared to those from major lenders. Two credit cards should be enough; close the rest. You’ll pay less in annual fees.

    3. Start a debt ‘snowball’ plan
    Make a list of your debts (excluding your mortgage), starting with the smallest balance and ending with the highest. Make the minimum payments on all your debts, but make an extra payment on the one with the smallest balance. When that debt is paid off, divert the payment you were making on it to the next debt on the list. By the time you get to the second and third debts, you’ll be making significant payments to the principal, which is the only way to actually eliminate a debt.

    Holmes recommends the website WhatsTheCost.com. “I love it,” she says. “It’s a neat little calculator that when you press ‘solve’, it gives you a table so you can literally see how fast you could pay off that debt.” When a debt is paid off, close the account associated with it.

    The success of snowballing is based on the assumption that you can afford the minimum payments on all your debts. (If you can’t, consider credit counseling.)
    4. Start a debt ‘stacking’ plan
    Make a list of your debts (excluding your mortgage ), starting with the one that has the highest interest rate. Make the minimum payments on all your debts, but make an extra payment on the one with the highest interest rate. When that first debt is paid off, divert the payment you were making on it to the next debt on the list.

    Since most credit card interest is compounded, you will save money focusing on interest rates. If, however, you need quick gratification, the encouragement of small successes (a credit card statement that finally reads “balance: $0”), to commit, ‘snowballing’ might be more lucrative for you.

    Bottom line: pick the plan you can stick to. That’s the one that will help you get out of debt fastest.

    5. Sign up for an ‘all-in-one’ account
    All-in-one accounts replace the traditional scenario of a mortgage and separate checking and/or savings accounts with a single account that includes your mortgage and into which your salary is deposited.

    “It’s a giant line of credit with checking and savings accounts attached,” says Holmes. The advantage is that deposits earn interest every day. These small amounts add up and are automatically applied to your debt.

    You do have to be disciplined though, because “you’re walking around with a debit card attached to your house,” says Holmes. Here’s what she does to protect herself: “Every week, I move a certain amount automatically to my checking account held at a different institution,” she says. That is the money she spends — no more — leaving the rest in the all-in-one.

    “It creates a vicious cycle in the right direction,” says Holmes. “Every penny of interest is going toward debt repayment.”

    6. Rent things
    “Let go of the idea that owning is better ,” says Holmes. This is especially true for depreciating assets, the largest of which is probably your car. It’s unrealistic to think people will go from commuting to taking public transit, but in larger cities, long-term car rentals or car co-ops can be cheaper than owning.

    If you can find a monthly rental for the same price as your lease payment, and use insurance attached to one of your credit cards (many include this coverage as a standard feature; car co-ops include insurance in their rates), you’ll save money that can be diverted to paying down debt.

    This also applies to tools that pile up at home. How often do you use that drill, reciprocating saw and palm sander? You’ll clear out square footage by off loading these items on CraigsList. You’ll also make a dent in your debt (by putting the money you get on the principal) and free up enough cash to rent the items if you need them again. (You won’t need them again.)

    The US Department of Education requires colleges to disclose a variety of information for any financial aid eligible program that prepares students for gainful employment in a recognized occupation. Midland College is committed to creating an educated workforce by offering occupational programs that lead to gainful employment.

    The Health Information Management online associate degree program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM). According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, health information management jobs are expected to increase by 15% from 2014-2024. The median income is $37,110, (2015 statistic), but additional credentials do add to the marketability of professionals.

    The HIM program was established in 1998 as a traditional face-to-face program. In 2007-2008, the HIM program transitioned to an “online only” program to meet the needs of working students and professionals. The exception to online courses are the requirement for clinical courses completed onsite at a facility (HITT 2261 for the associate degree and HITT 1167 for Medical Coding Specialist certificate).

    Many students admitted into the program have already completed one degree, and some have bachelors or masters degrees. The reason they pursue the associate degree training is to be eligible for the Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) upon graduation. The RHIT credential, and the RHIA credential for the bachelor’s degree, continue to be a preferred credential that healthcare employers seek when hiring Health Information Management candidates.

    Students must be self-motivated, able to comprehend information in written form, and have the ability to communicate effectively both in written and verbal forms. Students should also be able to research websites, upload and download documents, post discussions, and access email. The courses are not self-paced, but have scheduled weekly due dates for assignments, discussions, and tests. Students should expect to spend 6 9 hours per 3 hour credit course to complete assignments, readings, and tests. Instructors are available to answer questions online or by phone related to course topics.

    Skills Needed for Health Information Profession:

    ability to analyze patient data for payment or registry information,
    able to sit for long periods to complete work at work station
    research and review patient information for regulatory compliance,
    code and categorize patient information using standard coding systems.
    communicate effectively with patients, physicians, and other customers
    ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines
    keyboarding skills and ability to use software systems, patient portals, etc.

    Students may apply to the program in the semester they are completing the prerequisites. Final grades will be verified before admittance. Students are accepted prior to each semester (Summer, Fall, and Spring). Most of the students in the programs are considered part-time; taking 2 to 3 classes each semester since most have part-time or full-time jobs. There are approximately 70-80 students taking HIM classes or prerequisite courses to gain admission to the program.

    Clinical Requirement Onsite:

    Students that live outside the local Midland area are able to locate clinical sites in their area with the assistance of the HIM program. More information and directions are given to students upon acceptance into the program (courses related to associate degree and Medical Coding Specialist certificate). Prior to the clinical course, students are required to meet certain facility requirements to attend clinical practice. These include a background check, drug screen, immunizations, and other requirements based of the facility. More information provided prior to clinicals.
