Honig’s favorite hotel program is Starwood Preferred Guest or SPG, the loyalty program of Starwood Hotels, which includes Aloft, Sheraton, W, St. Regis and many other brands.

“These points are incredibly valuable, both when redeeming for stays and when converting them into miles with your frequent flyer program,” Honig says. “Starwood Hotels can be expensive, though. If you’re looking for something a bit more entry-level, consider IHG (Crowne Plaza, Holiday Inn), Wyndham, or Accor.“

As for which program is best for you, well, that depends on your personal travel patterns.

“If you are interested in family holidays and will generate your points with stays in smaller locations, then look at a program like Hilton. They have a huge number of hotels, the Hampton Inn part of the company is everywhere (and good value for family money) and they offer decent redemptions on smaller properties in less-popular destinations. (In other words, small towns where you might be headed for family get togethers.) IHG Rewards may also suit in this category,” says Joe Brancatelli, of the travel blog .

“But as with all frequency programs, the key is frequency. To really win at the programs, you need to concentrate your stays with that chain. That’s easier with hotels than airlines.”

There are myriad hotel reward programs that let you earn free stays. But many of them do so much more, like provide discounts on car rentals, flights, and shopping. And membership comes with other perks, like special discounts to certain destinations. It can be a lot to take in.

That’s why Yahoo Travel did the research for you to find seven of the very best rewards programs to look at as a business or leisure traveler.

1. Marriott Rewards — These guys boast 250 ways to use your points, including discounts at major retailers like Apple, Michael Kors, Prada, Nikon, Canon. A basic membership gives you the fifth night of a stay free, but the more you stay, the better your benefits get. The Silver, Gold and Platinum (which requires 75 stays) Elite programs come with lots of extra perks, like free Wi-Fi and room upgrades. And Marriott has 3,700 hotels in over 70 countries, so you’re guaranteed to find a hotel no matter your destination.

Hilton HHonors — With this program, it only takes 10 stays to achieve elite status, which gives you free Wi-Fi, late checkout, and free access to the fitness center, and you get to skip the double occupancy fees. They also allow you to choose between earning points or earning miles, and you can change your mind at any time. Earn 10 HHonors base points plus five bonus points per eligible U.S. dollar spent on your room. You can book a free night for as few as 5,000 HHonors points. There’s a nifty online calculator to help you figure out how to maximize your points. If you sign up now, you’ll earn double points through Aug. 31 so you can save on that last-minute final summer vacation.

Club Carlson — With more than 1,000 participating hotels worldwide, Club Carlson lets you earn 20 Gold Points per U.S. dollar spent on eligible stays and on money spent on meals and beverages charged to your room. It takes 9,000 points for a free stay. You can also use your points for discounts at car rental agencies. If you book your stay at a Radisson or Radisson Blu hotel, you can earn 10,000 bonus Gold Points using the program’s Mega Points rate. Club Carlson also has destination-specific offers. Right now, you can earn double points for travel to Asia-Pacific. And if you’re planning an exotic vacation to the Middle East, Turkey, or sub-Saharan Africa, you can get 30 percent off your stay.

This rewards program also allows you to redeem points for car rentals, flights, and magazine subscriptions. Every qualified stay earns you 10 points per U.S. dollar or 1,000 points, whichever is more.

With the enhanced MyCMP, users have electronic recordkeeping and signature capabilities, as well as 24/7 access to analyst support.

MyCMP creates all-digital task cards that can be signed electronically. A PDF of the e-signed paperwork attaches to the aircraft history, which ensures airworthiness requirements are met.

Records management is only one aspect of MyCMP. Gulfstream also has systems analysts who are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to assist with maintenance questions. OL offers many courses that fulfill both lower- and upper-level requirements for this degree, but you may need to complete some program requirements through classroom or distance courses from other recognized post-secondary institutions and transfer the credit to this program.

    Criminal Justice Major

    Students completing the major in Criminal Justice are instructed on the theories and practices pertaining to the criminal justice system, crime, prevention, and public and corporate responses to criminal behaviors on the local, national, and international level. This course of study leads them to function in an increasingly complex, confrontational, and violent world.

    “Don’t think because you are majoring in Criminal Justice that your opportunities are limited to the field. The material you will be taught and the skills you will hone do much for your overall development as a thinking and contributing member of society—I was exposed to many different fields while completing the major and all have given me a unique and fresh perspective on the world. Pick Criminal Justice because it intrigues you, not because you are looking for a specific job: you can go to graduate school for that.”

    The major is structured into three general sections with a completion of a minimum of 36 credits: General Coursework (which consists of 6 courses), Thematic Coursework (which consists of 3 courses), and Elective Coursework (which consists of 3 courses). All students interested in declaring a major in Criminal Justice must first complete Introduction to Criminal Justice (01:202:201); furthermore, in order to declare a major in Criminal Justice, students are required to earn a grade of “C” or better and have a minimum cumulative GPA of at least 2.0. Similarly, only courses that earn a grade of “C” or better will be counted toward the major.

    How to implement a successful corporate travel program. #travel #reservations

    In tough economic times, businesses are always seeking new ways to reduce costs, and travel budgets are often one of the first areas to come under scrutiny. One way to save money without sacrificing necessary travel or the traveler’s quality of life on the road is through the deployment of a corporate travel management program. While most large corporations have such programs in place, many smaller businesses don’t and could benefit greatly by implementing one.

    “A corporate travel program allows corporations to achieve transparency and accountability of one of their significant expenses,” says Ellina Arakelova, the travel operations manager for Align Technology, the makers of Invisalign, clear aligners for straightening teeth. “A well-managed corporate travel program ensures better corporate and financial discipline and improves the traveler experience,” adds Arakelova, who was hired to implement a corporate travel management program for Align.

    Based in Santa Clara, Calif. Align Technology, Inc. has 1,400 employees worldwide and earned just over $300 million in revenues last year. When Arakelova joined the company in October 2007, there was no formal travel management program in place and no one dedicated to managing the company’s travel. Align had a relationship with a travel management company (TMC) and a corporate credit card, but use of these was not mandatory and employees routinely booked travel on public websites, making it impossible to track expenditures. “There was no pre-trip visibility and very limited opportunity to correctly reconcile travel spend,” says Arakelova.

    Today Align’s corporate travel management program covers all trips originating in North America and will soon extend to its offices worldwide. Arakelova currently has 500 travelers in her database. Here are some of her steps for implementing a successful corporate travel policy.

    Make a plan and keep it comprehensible. As a certified travel manager, Arakelova built and managed a corporate travel program at her previous job, so she knew just what to do when she joined Align. The existing travel policy was extremely broad and not enforced, according to Arakelova.

    Arakelova worked with her finance department to construct the new travel policy. She wanted a terse, easy to understand policy, putting procedures and other frequently changing information in appendices for updating without altering the underlying travel policy.

    Arakelova wanted to consolidate all travel operations though a single TMC and online booking tool. The new travel policy would mandate the use of these entities as well as the corporate credit card, and preferred travel vendors.

    Get buy-in from all departments. To bring the rest of the company on board, Arakelova developed a business plan and financial proposal detailing the projected cost savings through a managed corporate travel program. “We did quite a lot of internal marketing and presentations, and got support from the upper management and the employees as well,” she says.

    Find a travel management company. Next Arakelova developed a request for proposal (RFP) to evaluate or benchmark each travel management company. Arakelova sent the RFP to several contestants and selected Carlson Wagonlit Travel because they offered the best package of services, costs, travel reporting and supported technologies. “Going with Carlson I could implement any online booking tool,” says Arakelova. Carlson also provided web space for a customized Align travel portal and the use of their corporate hotel directory. That was a huge asset for Align because their customers are scattered across the country. Arakelova saw the reporting tools offered by her RFP respondents as an integral component of the corporate travel program. “Financial visibility and travel data analysis are key to program success”, says Arakelova.

    Implement an online booking tool. From her previous experience Arakelova believed it was crucial for travelers to use an online booking tool to bring costs down and manage data. Arakelova chose Concur Cliqbook Travel as her online booking tool because it has a user-friendly interface. In addition, Arakelova was able to build the travel policy, approval process and preferred vendors into Cliqbook. She says Cliqbook also provides excellent policy compliance enforcement and is easy to administer.

    Ensure effective communication. The travel portal is a critical component of Arakelova’s travel management program. The portal consolidates all travel-related information and is accessible to all Align employees. “Effective travel communication channels are one of the most important parts of the travel program,” says Arakelova. The portal contains the policy and procedures, access to Cliqbook or an agent-assisted booking process, training materials, insurance information, the preferred vendor list, travel alerts, and destination news. Arakelova also uses internal company publications for flash news and important announcements.

    Train your travelers. Training and education are also critical components in getting employees to understand the need for travel policy compliance and learn how to book through the new system. “We can implement the best technology, but if the traveler is not educated in how to use it, the travel program is useless,” says Arakelova. To educate employees Arakelova conducts live Web-based training sessions and has made travel training part of new-hire orientation. Arakelova also plans to video record the training session, so employees can access it any time through the travel portal.

    Keep improving. It took Arakelova less than six months to implement her new corporate travel management program. She subsequently added the Concur expense reporting module and a new product called Ride Charge which allows employees to book ground transportation online. “Cliqbook constantly develops new features,” says Arakelova. “It is the responsibility of the travel manager to be well educated on technology innovations and communicate new features to users,” she adds. Arakelova also plans to add group and meetings booking capabilities and will extend the program internationally to Align’s global locations.

    Show results. An impressive 78% of Align travelers now initiate bookings through Cliqbook with greater than 98% corporate travel policy compliance. More importantly, Align’s overall travel operations realized a 56% reduction in management costs, a 25% reduction in average airfare, and a 35% reduction in average car rental costs.

    Elevator GMS – System Modules


    The first module is called ELEVATOR and is where incoming grain is processed. This is the area where you enter customer information and incoming scale tickets, produce settlements, print incoming grain reports, sell stored grain, and all of the other functions associated with incoming grain.

    Customer information, including customer names, addresses, farm information and contracts, are maintained here. Customer settlements as well as numerous other reports are also produced by this component. If you need to know how much grain was received during the last week, you can obtain that information with a few keystrokes.


    SHIPPER is the second major area of the system and is used to enter and maintain information about grain that is leaving your facility. It can provide you with information about grain destinations, shipping agents, freight costs associated with the transport, and many other types of data.

    This component allows you to enter outbound tickets as they exit your facility and later enter the information that was supplied by the destination elevator where the grain was delivered. It is easy to see any discrepancies between what you say was shipped and what the other party says was received. This module also includes a number of other reports.


    The final component of the system is known as DAILY and is where you keep up with the position of each of your grains. Information may be automatically transferred from the incoming (ELEVATOR) and outgoing (SHIPPER) tickets so that you do not need to re-enter this information a second time.

    You may also make manual adjustments to any position as are required. The main reports in this section are designed to show your position and liability information and are quite useful to the grain inspectors when they are reviewing your situation.

    Our ELEVATOR Grain Management System is offered as a software subscription and is hosted on servers in the cloud.

    Our servers are maintained in a secure data center and are accessible from a Windows desktop in any location with an Internet connection.

    The subscription requires an initial one-time setup fee and an economical monthly subscription fee based on the size of your elevator and the number of concurrent users of the service that you require.

    Pricing begins at $100/month for a subscription with up to three (3) concurrent users. The setup fee for this configuration is $250.

    Free Trial

    We offer a free, 15-day trial period for you to fully evaluate the service and its applicability to your business. The trial includes sample data, a detailed instruction manual, and a link to our online training videos that we have created to help new users in the evaluation process.

    If, during your 15-day trial period, you decide to continue with the software service, simply notify our office and we will set up and activate your subscription and begin billing you for the setup and subscription.

    If we have not heard back from you by the end of the 15-day trial, your trial will be discontinued automatically.

    Customer Support

    Included in the subscription price is a reasonable amount of support and training. A detailed instruction manual is included with the software as well as a link to several online videos we have created to teach new users how to use the system.

    We also provide a limited amount of test/sample data that allows you to quickly evaluate the usefulness of the product. This data can be easily removed with just a few keystrokes, and you may begin adding your own data when you desire.

    Enhancements and updates to the software are made periodically and are included in the subscription price.

    We do require that users have an active subscription in order to continue receiving telephone support.

    We make every effort to take your calls personally. When we are not available, we have a voice mail system and do our best to respond to your call within two business days.

    About Us

    Tom King Consulting is a small, family-based business located just outside of Denton, Texas. The business was founded by Tom King in the early 1980s. We lost Tom in early 2016, and since that time, the business has been operated by his wife, Sara, and son, Scott. Tom developed and supplied software for well over four decades, and Scott has been doing the same since the late 1970s. We have deliberately maintained our size and structure in order to maintain reasonable prices and to try to offer the kind of personal service that we appreciate from others.

    A Brief Look at Our History

    In the early 1980s, Tom received a request to develop a software product to help manage the wheat harvest from his brother-in-law who was operating a grain elevator in Graham, Texas. Tom had been in the computer business for well over twenty years at the time, and after a certain amount of persuasion, he agreed to put something together that would benefit his brother-in-law as well as his sister-in-law who was doing most of the office work. That was the rudimentary beginnings of the Grain Management System that we offer today.

    During the next few years, there was some interest shown by other operators, and the system gradually increased in functionality and scope. By about 1988, there was enough interest in the system to gather a number of elevator operators and determine what was required to produce a commercial software product. With their encouragement and support, we went through a complete re-design and re-development of the entire system. At that time, the system we redesigned to use a relational database and was completely DOS based. As we began to see some success in the marketplace during the decade of the 90s, we were issuing new releases of the software about once a year.

    In the late 1990s, it became apparent that we would need to make the conversion to Windows. That entailed another major re-design and re-writing of the system and turned out to be the most extensive conversion that we had done to date, requiring a major investment into the product. Even though we had to increase the price slightly, we continued to sell the product for much less than all of our larger competitors. Throughout this period, we continued to make enhancements and improvements to the product and maintained the ability to run under the various versions of Microsoft Windows that have been released.

    In 2015, we began offering a cloud-based subscription version of the software, and by early 2017 we anticipate that all of our active customers will be using our cloud-based offering.

    Everything is pretty straight forward. You have Mymathlab and then have to go to her class to get the attendance portion. Overall, the quizzes and exams were easy since there are reviews for them. Only downside is that the teacher is weird and rude.

    I took professor Keane MGF 1107 course last Spring. Easy pass. This blended course is a mix of face to face and online work. All quizzes online. An essay- fun- about a math person. Proctored Midterm and Final. So you need to know your stuff . But professor keane has these reviews in her course. Do them and and understand them. You will get A s.

    Very discouraging individual. Does not grade fairly. You can have perfect attendance do fairly well in most assignments, but she will still fail you. You have to have a combined 60% in tests 2 5 to pass her class. Must show work to get credit. Does not care, will not give any extensions on homework. You may as well take this class online.

    I took her for an MGF1106 Blended online course. Fair as can be – do your homework and show up to class – you will have no problems. She gives reviews for all quizzes and exams, and theyre usually pretty similar to the actual exam. I have struggled with math since high school and I managed a B in this course.

    Her class is a lot of work. You have weekly MyMathLab homework and there are 6 test for which she provides reviews and it s all done at home and an essay. There is a proctored midterm and final for which she also provides reviews. She doesn t teach in class but has narrated powerpoints on blackboard. Attendance is mandatory but she doesn t teach.

    Prof. Keane is pretty annoying can be rude, but overall her class is a piece of joke. HW on MyMathLab, 5 quizzes you take at home which she provides reviews for, they re exactly the same with different # s. Her midterm was EXACTLY like the review, her final? Not so much, so beware for that last exam! Overall, pretty easy A.

    This professor does not teach at all, its a learn yourself type of math class but its not hard if you take notes on the powerpoints on mymathlab. Also for quizzes and midterm/final she gives you reviews MUST DO THEM they are VERY helpful!! The quizzes are done at home with notes and book. Attendance is part of your grade.

    Great professor and great class. its an online class so if you have a life, kids and work. this is a great alternative. she is tough and her attitude can be aggressive at times but we are all adults. if you expect people to baby you your whole life dont take this class. but honestly she is great and is there to help. ill take her again

    Having her as a professor is the equivalence to talking to an operator whenever your DirectTV signal is down. Pointless. She thinks she s witty but she just comes off intolerable. Midterm and final (Also easy if you study) and you can practice before hand so you know exactly whats on there. I had a huge family issue and she was understanding about it and we were able to resolve. Forever grateful. I recommend to all.


    This was by far the easiest math course I have ever taken. I took the course online and with the help of the online textbook and instructional videos that go with every chapter, it was extremely easy! I did not feel I needed the instructor much though. I used the textbook program to do homework and study. She did not provide much as a teacher.

    The class was blended which means it meets once a week and assignments are mostly online. She is willing to help if the situation arises. I recommend having a study group to achieve the highest grade possible.

    She can be a bit intimidating (don t get her mad). She is helpful, don t expect her to baby you. Ask her for her help. She knows what she s doing and wants everyone to pass. Makes the class easy. You can pass if you put in the work. She really cares about her students and loves to see them take her again! Very proud of her students

Attendance is not mandatory but if you miss more than two classes in a row you might be dropped. Book is not necessary, MyMathLab is because all homework is there. Practice quizes, quizes and two big tests. Class is pretty simple overall.

    Keane can be very rude sometimes and very condescending but when it comes to the math it s very easy. You take all the quizzes, tests, and homework online, except for the midterm and final. Attendance is mandatory because she will drop you after 2 absences.

    The Nurse Anesthesia concentration prepares the graduate to become a CRNA Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA).

    The front-loaded format includes four terms for didactic course work. During the fifth term, the students begin clinical rotations while completing didactic course work. The final four terms are dedicated full-time to supervised clinical education. The program is completed on campus at UTHSC and near-by clinical agencies.

    Applicants are expected to understand the role, function, demands and expectations of CRNAs within the health care community. This information can be obtained by direct clinical observation of a CRNA and from the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists website.

    Degree concentrations include pathways for those wishing to obtain initial CRNA certification and for APRNs with current CRNA credentials.


    The University of Tennessee Health Science Center’s College of Nursing Nurse Anesthesia Concentration is accredited by Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs. 222 S. Prospect Ave. Park Ridge, IL, 60068, (847) 655-1160. In May 2009, the program awarded 10 years of continued accreditation. The next onsite visit will be fall 2018, for a May 2019 accreditation decision. In addition, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) accredit the University and College of Nursing. The most recent class of DNP graduates completed the program in May 2016. There was no attrition in this cohort. Employment of graduates within six months of graduation was 100%.     Currently, the clinical sites used by our students include the Methodist Healthcare Systems Hospitals (University, South, North, and Germantown Hospitals and Methodist Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital), the Regional Medical Center, Veterans Affairs Medical Center, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Baptist Memorial Hospital – Desoto (Olive Branch), and Baptist Memorial Hospital – Union County. All the sites are in the greater Memphis area with the exception of our rural experience at Baptist Hospital – Union County in New Albany, MS, which is approximately an hour’s drive from UTHSC campus (61 miles).

    We are fortunate to use local clinical sites which provide a richness of experience serving a wide variety of patients with high-quality anesthesia care. Specialty anesthesia rotations, which occur during the full-time clinical component, include cardiothoracic, pediatric, pediatric oncology, neurosurgical, OB, trauma, pain management, burn, and rural site.

    The number of applicants varies from year to year, but generally there are 3 – 4 applicants for every available seat in the class. The class size has ranged from 15 to 22 in recent years.

    Priority is given to Tennessee Residents. Students who demonstrate critical thinking are highly ranked.

    Tuition costs are determined by in-state or out-of-state status and may change during the program. Tuition and fee information can be found at Additionally, the Educational Common Market may be available for some out-of-state students. Information on this program can be obtained at the Office of Financial Aid. Many employers also offer tuition reimbursement even for part-time employees. Additionally, students will need to make arrangements for travel and hotel accommodations during the oncampus experiences. Students should also explore the many private scholarship funds available for graduate study in their communities, region, state and nation. A Google search of graduate nursing scholarships will produce vast opportunities. Many diverse groups offer scholarship programs and some states and organizations also have loan repayment programs for nursing education. There are also federal government grants for nursing students.

    Working is strongly discouraged due to the academic rigor and time constraints of the Nurse Anesthesia program.

    ACLS, BCLS, and PALS certifications are required at application and must be maintained throughout the program. CCRN certification is highly recommended.

    One year of full-time critical care experience is a national requirement for admission to all Nurse Anesthesia Programs. In this program, we evaluate each applicant on an individual basis to determine the quality as well as quantity of critical care skills. A minimum of one year of professional nursing experience in adult and/or pediatric critical care is required within two years prior to application.

    There is a program introduction for incoming students in late May. The DNP Nurse Anesthesia program typically begins the first Monday of June, though the start date may vary depending on the calendar for that year.

    Students may enroll in select UTHSC College of Nursing courses with permission from the Academic Dean. You might also take an equivalent graduate-level biostatistics or healthcare economics course at another institution if you seek prior approval from the College of Nursing Dean for Academic Affairs by providing the course syllabus. You must then submit supporting transcript documentation to request actual transfer of credit. Be advised that transferring courses may affect your ability to secure student loans; currently, a minimum 5 credits are required to qualify for part-time status.

    CRNAs certified by the NBCRNA who wish to complete a DNP may do so through the Acute Care Nursing DNP program.

    The Master of Science in Anesthesia program at NSU is dedicated to the education of anesthesiologist assistants, the health care community, and for the care and safety of patients. This unique 27 month AA program consists of an intensive academic and didactic program that will prepare the student to function within the anesthesia care team. The Program will emphasize the clinical education of the anesthesiologist assistant using a state-or-the-art mock operating room with an anesthesia simulator, and hospital based clinical rotations. The students will get an extensive clinical training experience that will consist of a minimum of 2500 clinical hours that encompass all aspects of anesthesia care for the surgical patient. Upon completion of the course of study, students will have earned a Master of Science degree in Anesthesia from Nova Southeastern University.

    The first year of study focuses on the foundations of anesthesia practice through classroom, mock operating room scenarios and studies, and laboratory work. Clinical experience during the first year will increase as the year progress.

    The senior year (semesters 5, 6, 7) will consist of clinical rotations assigned in two week and four week intervals. During the senior year, clinical rotations are full time and involve all specialty areas in anesthesia, including general surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, otolaryngology, orthopedics, neurosurgery, ophthalmology, genito-urinary surgery, vascular surgery, cardiac surgery, thoracic surgery, transplantation, and trauma. Clinical rotations include days, evenings, nights, weekends, and call – depending upon the rotation.

    NSU’s Master of Science in Anesthesia program will prepare the student for the national certification exam that is administered by the National Board of Medical Examiners under the auspices of the National Commission for the Certification of Anesthesiologist Assistants. The certification process involves successfully completing the Certifying Examination for Anesthesiologist Assistants for initial certification; registration of continuing medical education credits every two years; and successful competition of the Examination for Continued Demonstration of Qualifications every six years.

    Treatment Options for Prescription Drug Addiction #addiction, #drug #addiction, #methadone, #suboxone,


    Treating an Addiction to Painkillers

    Opioid addiction isn’t a moral or mental weakness. It’s a chronic medical condition that results from changes in the brain in susceptible people. Once narcotic addiction has developed, escaping the cycle of detox and relapse is typically a long-term process.

    Breaking free of prescription drug abuse takes much more than willpower. Fortunately, medications and counseling can improve the chances of success. Newer drugs like buprenorphine (sometimes combined with naloxone. a combination called Suboxone), naltrexone (given by mouth as the drug Revia or by a monthly injection called Vivitrol ), and traditional therapies like methadone along with12-step programs are helping thousands of people stay on the road to recovery.

    Physical Dependence and Detoxification

    Narcotic addiction leads to real changes in certain areas of the brain. Prescription drug addiction alters the circuits responsible for mood and “reward” behaviors.

    In addition, long-term prescription drug abuse affects virtually all the systems in the body. Cutting off the supply abruptly leads to opioid withdrawal symptoms.

    Symptoms of opioid withdrawal include:

    But for someone with an established narcotic addiction, a list of symptoms doesn’t capture the agony of opioid withdrawal. The syndrome is intensely unpleasant, and people will do almost anything to avoid it.

    Opioid withdrawal lasts from hours to several days — and sometimes weeks — depending on how long and how much a person has used their drug of choice. After the intense initial symptoms subside, some physical and mental discomfort may persist for weeks.

    Medications for Opioid Withdrawal

    Opioid withdrawal is difficult to endure, and is a major reason for relapse and continued prescription drug abuse. Medications are used to prevent symptoms of opioid withdrawal during detox, easing the person out of physical dependence:

    Methadone is a long-acting opioid drug. It activates the same opioid receptors as other narcotics, effectively eliminating withdrawal symptoms. Providing the correct dose of methadone prevents opioid withdrawal symptoms and eases drug craving but it does not provide the euphoria. The dose can be slowly tapered off, freeing the person from physical dependence without withdrawal symptoms. Methadone is the most effective known treatment for narcotic addiction.


    Buprenorphine alone (Subutex ) or buprenorphine plus naloxone (Suboxone) is a newer drug that helps with detox from opioid addiction. Buprenorphine activates opioid receptors, reducing drug craving and preventing withdrawal. Naloxone helps prevent misuse of the medication. Subutex is typically used for acute opiate detoxification, while Suboxone is used either for acute detoxification or maintenance prevention of opiate relapse.

    Clonidine is a blood pressure medicine that acts on the brain. Clonidine reduces the effects of the “fight or flight” response, which is over-activated during opioid withdrawal. However, clonidine does not reduce drug craving and is less effective when used alone.

    “Rapid detox” programs claim to accelerate the process of detox and opioid withdrawal by giving large doses of opioid blocking drugs. Some programs place an addict under general anesthesia during the detox process. These programs have not proven to be more effective than traditional methods of detox, and may be more dangerous.

    Maintenance Therapy After Detox

    Completing detox subdues the physical effects of narcotic addiction and opioid withdrawal. But experts say psychological and social factors are the main drivers that push addicts back to using. Stress and situations that remind the brain of the drug’s pleasure are common triggers.

    When drug cravings strike, they can be extremely hard to resist. Most people who only go through detox and short-term counseling without maintenance treatment will most likely relapse to prescription drug abuse.

    Studies show that the chances of beating narcotic addiction are better with long-term maintenance therapy with either methadone or buprenorphine paired with naloxone (Zubsolv, Bunavail, Suboxone) . These drugs are used during the maintenance phase of treatment. People on these drugs are still opioid-dependent, but they are often freed from their destructive drug addiction. They can return to work, drive without impairment, and function normally in society. Naloxone has also been combined with oxycontin ( Targiniq ER ) to deter abuse by snorting or injecting the drug. A person can still become addicted by taking it orally, however.

    Methadone is the best-studied, most effective method of recovery from narcotic addiction. Suboxone, while newer, has gained wide acceptance as maintenance therapy.


    A form of buprenorphone than can be implanted under the skin (called Probuphine ) is now available to help prevent opiate relapse in people who have already completed detox and are stable on an oral form of buprenorphine. It provides a constant dose of buprenorphine for six months.

    Some people have a high rate of relapse when maintenance therapy is stopped, and so they remain on the medicines indefinitely. In others, maintenance therapy is tapered off over months to years.

    Naltrexone (ReVia, Vivitrol) is an opiate receptor-blocking medication used in maintenance therapy for narcotic addiction. Unlike methadone and Suboxone, naltrexone does not activate receptors at all, so it does not reduce opioid withdrawal or craving. However, because naltrexone blocks opiate receptors, a person won’t get high if he or she uses drugs while taking the medicine. The drug is is most effective when used as part of a broader comprehensive recovery treatment program.

    Counseling and 12-Step Programs

    Narcotics Anonymous (NA) is an international network of community-based meetings for those recovering from drug addiction. Modeled after Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), NA is a 12-step program with a defined process for overcoming narcotic addiction.

    NA is an abstinence-based program. In principle, NA is opposed to the use of maintenance therapy. Methadone Anonymous is a 12-step program that acknowledges the value of methadone or Suboxone in recovery from narcotic addiction.

    Most experts and treatment centers recommend participation in a 12-step-based treatment program or other form of counseling. Therapy can take place as an outpatient, or in a residential facility. Alternatives to 12-step-based programs include:

    • Cognitive behavioral therapy
    • Motivational interviewing
    • Family and couples therapy

    Recovery from prescription drug addiction can be expensive. However, it is far less costly in comparison with the cost of addiction and continuous use of drugs.

    The Benefits of an Accelerated MBA

    The popularity of accelerated online MBA programs can be attributed to the fact that these one-year degrees save students both time and money. This shortens the traditional Suffolk MBA program by at least five courses, and students are able to graduate after 10 to 13 classes. Suffolk also offers an Accelerated MBA for CPAs, which works in the same way.

    More and more schools are starting to offer accelerated versions of their online MBA programs. However, it is important to ensure that an MBA degree is awarded as a year-long program. The term accelerated is sometimes used to describe two-year programs as well. Two schools that offer quality one-year online MBA programs, designed to take only 10 to 15 months to complete, are Babson College and the University of Florida. In fact, both schools placed among the top 10 one-year MBA programs in rankings by Also, the business programs at the University of Florida are accredited by the AACSB, and, according to the school website, the university was recently recognized as having one of only two distance-learning programs in the world to earn the rating of excellent by The Economist magazine.

    Accelerated Versus General

    Classes will move more quickly in an accelerated online MBA program than in a typical one. More information will be covered per class, and tests will be more intense and more frequent. An accelerated program is geared toward students with extensive backgrounds in business, usually bachelor’s degrees in business combined with at least two years of professional experience. Course work will start at a more advanced level than that of a general MBA. Rather than reviewing basic business concepts, students will delve directly into the practice of those concepts. Accelerated programs are often tied to a school’s general MBA program. For example, students of the one-year MBA online at Babson College begin the program in May with an intense 12-week summer program. Then, students take their elective courses along with second-year students of the general MBA programs. This means that students need to have already taken a significant number of business courses before entering a one-year program. The prerequisites for the Babson program include Financial Accounting, Managerial Accounting, Finance, Statistics, Quantitative Foundations of Decision Support Systems, Strategy, Operations Management, Organizational Behavior, Marketing, Microeconomics, Macroeconomics and Business Law.

    Despite the current popularity of accelerated online MBA programs, there are definite pros and cons to the shortened style. According to The Wall Street Journal survey, almost two-thirds of students in one-year online MBA programs spent more than 15 hours per week on schoolwork beyond lectures and class discussions. Combine that with an intense course load, and students in accelerated programs have little time for anything other than studying, working and sleeping. Some students surveyed said they felt exhausted by the fast-paced curriculum and some mentioned not having had enough time to fully absorb case studies. However, there are many benefits to such an intense and fast-paced course schedule. Some students and alumni reported that the intensity of the accelerated program helped fuel constant engagement with the material and close bonds with classmates.

    Students in one-year online MBA programs will get less of an opportunity to network with their classmates and get career assistance from administrators than those on a regular track. Students in the faster-paced programs have little time for internships or consulting projects, which means less of a chance to make company contacts. According to The Wall Street Journal, many such students had problems with their career-service departments not doing enough to help them make contacts or create career paths. Much of this is due, in part, to the fact that there just isn’t time in an accelerated program for students or school administrators to reach out, but another factor is the reality that an accelerated program is created for students with extensive business experience. This can be a turnoff to students who are looking to change careers and make industry contacts; they may need more connection opportunities and should consider two-year programs. Students with years of experience are less likely to require internship opportunities or career assistance, so they may not see accelerated programs as lacking.

    • High school diploma or GED.
    • Must apply and be accepted into RCTC.
    • Minimum GPA of 2.0 – calculated from the past 5 years of college credits.
    • Demonstrated college level reading and writing skills required. (**)
    • Completion of Math 0094 or CHEM 1101 or higher with a C or better or equivalent test score. (**)
    • Successful completion of a Nursing Assistant course (NA 1500) or active-status on the MN Registry.
    • Health 1110 or equivalent BLS For Healthcare must be completed prior to classes beginning in August – online certification is not acceptable.
    • ATI TEAS exam – offered monthly at RCTC

    Application and Admission Structure:

    All students interested in applying to the Practical Nursing Diploma program will be required to take the ATI Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) to determine eligibility for application.

    1. This exam is offered at RCTC.
    2. TEAS test needs to be completed by the application deadline date.
    3. Students will only be allowed to take the test twice in a twelve month period and the best score will be used for ranking purposes. The score will be valid for two years.

    1. The combined total TEAS composite score and cumulative GPA will be utilized to rank applicants.
    2. TEAS composite score divided by a factor of 10 (Ex: Composite score of 72% = 7.2). TEAS scores are valid for two years.
    3. Cumulative GPA – all grades from all institutions from the previous 5 years will be included in calculation.
    4. In the event of a tied combined total TEAS composite score and GPA, the applicant with the highest TEAS science sub-score will advance in rank. If a further tie exists, the applicant with the highest TEAS English sub-score will advance in rank.
    5. Applications of students not accepted into the program each round will not be retained. If a student chooses to reapply, the student must resubmit the entire application for the next admission cycle.

        • Attend a mandatory Nursing Orientation. Nursing acceptance letter will identify the sessions and times available.

        • Complete a State of Minnesota Background Study and a national criminal background check. Further information will be provided at orientation.
        • Students may enter the Associate Degree Nursing program after completion of the Practical Nursing program as a LPN-Mobility student. Applications for the Associate Degree Nursing program will not be eligible after seat acceptance into Practical Nursing.

    What Are the Treatments for Down Syndrome?

    If your child is born with Down syndrome. you want to be able to make informed choices about treatments that can help your little one thrive.

    Because Down syndrome affects everyone who has it in different ways, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to treatment. But doctors do know that the earlier children get care, the more likely they are to live up to their full potential.

    Your child may need help in different ways, from crawling and walking to talking and learning how to be social. She may also need extra attention in school. And she may have medical issues that need regular care.

    You’ll likely rely on a team of providers, including your child’s main doctor, and maybe specialists like ear doctors, heart doctors, and others. Your child may also work with physical, occupational, and speech therapists.

    Early Intervention

    Most states offer programs that provide a range of services for children up to 3 years old. These programs can boost your child’s physical and mental growth. They typically have therapists and teachers who are specially trained to help kids learn a variety of skills, such as how to:

    • Feed and dress themselves
    • Roll over, crawl, and walk
    • Play and be around other people
    • Think and solve problems
    • Talk, listen, and understand others

    Help in School

    Many kids with Down syndrome go to their neighborhood schools along with all the other kids. This can be great not only for your child, but for the other children as well.

    Your child also has the right to get services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), which starts at age 3. IDEA requires public schools to offer the best education they can, no matter what challenges a person faces.

    As part of this effort, you’ll work with the school to develop an individualized education program (IEP). This helps make sure your child gets support that suits her needs. It may include things like working with a reading specialist or speech therapist.

    While public schools work great for many children, there other types of schools that focus more on the needs of kids with Down syndrome. Your child’s doctors, therapists, and teachers can help figure out which is best for her.


    Medical Treatment

    Some health problems are more common in kids with Down syndrome. Many children don’t have them, but if yours does, you can get treatment for:

    Hearing loss . Many children with Down syndrome have hearing loss in one or both ears. Because of that, your child will likely have regular visits with an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) doctor to catch any issues early on. Sometimes hearing problems are caused by fluid build-up in the ears. In that case, ear tubes — which many children get if they have constant ear infections –can help.

    Problems seeing. Issues with eyesight are also common. Your child will have regular check-ups with an eye doctor and may need glasses, surgery, or other treatment. It’s important to keep up with ear and eye exams. because problems seeing and hearing can lead to delays in learning and talking.

    Heart problems. About half the babies born with Down syndrome have a problem with either the shape of their heart or how it works. Some conditions are more serious than others and require surgery. In other cases, your child may need to take medicine.

    Obstructive sleep apnea. This is a condition where a person’s breathing stops and restarts many times as they sleep. Typically, a child with Down syndrome gets checked for sleep apnea by age 4. During an overnight sleep test, doctors check to see if your child’s breathing stops and restarts. If so, she may need to wear a mask while sleeping. The mask is attached to a machine that helps her breathe normally. Sometimes, larger-than-normal tonsils and adenoids cause sleep apnea. In this case, your doctor may suggest surgery to remove them.

    Leukemia. Children with Down syndrome are at a 10- to 20-fold increase for developing this blood cancer. But the risk is still at 2%. Leukemia is curable.

    Thyroid. Thyroid disorders are more prevalent in children with Down syndrome.

    Other medical problems. Your child may also have other less common issues that need treatment, such as:

    • Blockage in the intestine. Some babies with Down syndrome get Hirschsprung ’s disease, where part of the intestine gets blocked. This is treated with surgery that removes part of the intestine.
    • Infections. Babies with Down syndrome also have weaker immune systems, so they may get sick more often. There’s no treatment for this, but it means that getting vaccines on time is even more important.
    • Thyroid problems . The thyroid makes hormones your body need. In kids with Down syndrome, it sometimes doesn’t make enough. If that happens, your child will take medicine to help.

    Farm Business Management Education Programs

    Minnesota State Colleges and Universities farm business management education programs are administered through eight college campuses at 46 different sites across the state. There are a total of 62 farm business management instructors.

    Farm business management programs are designed to provide education to farm owners and operators or persons interested in farming. The purpose of the program is to assist students in meeting their business and personal goals. This is best accomplished through the use of quality records and sound business decisions. Effective financial management in the business is the best way for the business to maintain that competitive edge.

    Instructors in Minnesota s farm business management education programs deliver the program using a variety of methods. The primary delivery method is through individualized instruction at the student s farming business. Instructors meet with the students on a regular basis to evaluate the business and develop individual educational plans. Instruction is also delivered in the traditional classroom, small group meetings, field trips and tours.

    Farm business management education is managed at the state level by the senior system director for workforce development and customized training. The state of Minnesota is divided into six regions which are managed by five regional deans of management education.

    Effective SAP Project Managers – SAP Program Managers Deliver Results #erp


    SAP Project Success

    In all the years I’ve been involved with SAP I’ve often puzzled about what makes a really good project rather than some of the freak shows they call SAP projects. After involvement in over 20 SAP projects I’ve seen a few of them go really well, a few that were more like horror shows, but most were mediocre. I’ve often asked myself “Why?” What makes the difference between a good project and one that is nothing short of a mess?

    One key item that stands out is project management. Even with the most talented and dedicated resources bad project management can ruin an otherwise great SAP project.

    I don’t blame client project managers because if they had all of the resources they would not need outside help and guidance.

    Before I get into this, let me define what I consider a “good” project. A good project is one where there is a lot to do, but the stress level is not intense. The timeline may be tight but it is achievable (maybe a little bit of a stretch). The project is delivered on time, on budget, within scope and the result is high quality (a fairly smooth transition without a chaotic go-live).

    Methodology Considerations for a Good SAP Project or SAP Program

    The list below is from a synthesis of materials from SAP’s ASAP methodology, the PMI (Project Management Institute), and my personal experience over the years. Much of this is contained in the SAP ASAP methodology in one form or another so you really have to wonder what any consultant is following if they claim to use it and these items are lacking. In fact the latest ASAP Methodology version 7.1 includes a project start-up checklist to ensure key components are addressed.

    Unlike several years ago when contract project managers had to rely on experience alone the SAP ASAP Methodology is well-proven and mature today.

    There are several key characteristics of a well managed SAP project which includes:

    Early SAP Project or Program Management Activities (Before the Overall SAP Project is Fully Underway)

    • Success criteria defined and communicated for the project.
    • One of the first things that is defined for the project are the key roles, responsibilities, and tasks that will be performed by each participant group in the project.
    • A clear, definitive project plan with WBS elements, networks, and activities planned for every major work-stream throughout the entire timeline.
    • A clear list of deliverables, milestones, templates, and instructions on their usage are provided for the entire project.
    • Deliverables are clearly tied to project value rather than useless administrative exercises (value added activities) (see SAP System Vendor Project Success Criteria Factors 1 scroll down to Sections 8 and 9 ).
    • Scope, time, issues, risk, cost, communication, and integration management plans, together with additional key components are defined.
    • Various standards for the project are defined and documented, including but not limited to business process, development, configuration, enhancement, transport management, testing, etc.

    If you are using outside contract project management resources and these items are not substantially in place by the time you start your project you will likely have your timeline and budget destroyed. Along with the blown schedule and budget your project will also be a pressure cooker filled with stress, anxiety, and frustration. These are also characteristics you find when an SAP project manager or SAP program manager is not qualified. The chaos, tension, stress, and confusion caused by their inability to coordinate the many moving parts of the project are a direct result of their lack of experience and ability.

    I don’t blame client project managers because if they had all of the resources they would not need outside help and guidance.

    Conclusion on Effective SAP Project or Program Management Practices

    You are headed for a project disaster when a contract SAP project manager or SAP program manager fails to ensure the following items are in place early in the project:

    • responsibilities by group and role are defined,
    • deliverables are well laid out,
    • templates are properly prepared,
    • forward looking expectations are set,
    • coordination occurs between all project groups,
    • etc.

    I’ve only ever been on a few projects when the SAP project manager or SAP program manager failed to produce a properly detailed project plan. Every one of those projects had one thing in common, they were absolutely horrendously stressful, difficult, and took more time and cost more than necessary. Along with the failure to produce a proper project plan the lack of proper deliverables, proper roles and responsibilities, and all of the other things a good project plan would help you define were also missing. If this happens to you FIRE those contractors, you are being bled dry and are headed for a budget and timeline disaster.

    The Environmental Sciences Graduate Program offers the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Environmental Sciences.

    Advanced training in Environmental Sciences is becoming increasingly necessary to address complex problems involving natural resources and environmental quality. Although this task frequently requires specialized knowledge in various fields of science, it also requires understanding and integration of a wide variety of interacting physical, chemical, biological, and societal influences. This interaction makes graduate study in environmental sciences distinct from many other scientific fields. We have designed our program to offer graduate training in a number of specialized focus areas within environmental sciences, operating within a single graduate degree program administered by the Department of Environmental Sciences. Students trained in the Environmental Sciences Graduate Program can fill many areas of expertise needed in the state and nation. Potential career opportunities exist at regulatory agencies, consulting firms, government and academic research institutions, and industrial research facilities.

    Fall Quarter Admissions Priority Deadline: December 1

    The Environmental Sciences Graduate Program offers graduate training in:

    Master‘s Degree

    The Department of Environmental Sciences offers the M.S. degree in Environmental Sciences under the Plan I (Thesis) and Plan II (Comprehensive Examination) options. The general requirements for the M.S. degree are found in the Announcement of the Graduate Division.

    Plan I (Thesis)

    Students must complete a minimum of 36 quarter units of graduate and upper-division undergraduate courses in, or significantly related to, environmental sciences. At least 24 of the 36 units must be in graduate courses. A maximum of 12 of these units may be in graduate research for the thesis. No more than 4 units of ENSC 290 and 2 units of graduate seminar courses may be applied toward the degree. A thesis must be written and accepted by the M.S. thesis committee members, and a final oral defense of the thesis must be passed. Students also will be required to give a presentation annually at the Environmental Sciences Graduate Program Student Symposium.

    Plan II (Comprehensive Examination)

    Students must complete a minimum of 36 quarter units of graduate and upper-division undergraduate courses in, or significantly related to, environmental sciences. At least 18 units must be in graduate courses. Students may count no more than 2 units of graduate seminar courses and 6 units of graduate internship courses toward the required 18 units and no units from graduate research for thesis or dissertation.

    Students must take a comprehensive written examination that covers fundamental topics in environmental sciences. The written examination, which is three to four hours long, is prepared and evaluated by a committee appointed by the field director. The examination is taken during the latter part of the final quarter in the M.S. program. Students must wait at least eight weeks before retaking a failed examination. Students failing the examination twice are dismissed from the program.

    Normative Time to Degree

    Doctoral Degree

    The Department of Environmental Sciences offers the Ph.D. degree in Environmental Sciences. The general requirements for the Ph.D. degree are found in the Announcement of the Graduate Division.

    Course Work

    Students must complete the course requirements and will be required to give a presentation annually at the Environmental Sciences Graduate Program Student Symposium.

    Comprehensive Written Examination

    Following completion of all coursework prescribed by the student’s Advisory Committee, a written qualifying examination will be prepared and administered to the student by a Written Qualifying Examination Committee. The Written Qualifying Examination Committee will consist of at least three faculty members with interests in the student‘s line of research. The purpose of the written qualifying examination is to determine that the student has gained sufficient knowledge in the chosen field to perform professionally and competently. The written exam may be attempted only twice. If the written qualifying exam is failed twice, the student will be redirected to the M.S. degree or terminated from the program.

    Oral Examination

    A student who satisfactorily passes the written qualifying examination may proceed with the oral qualifying examination, which will focus on the dissertation proposal. The oral examination is conducted before the Oral Qualifying Examination Committee, consisting of five faculty members, one of whom must be from outside the ESGP. The oral examination may be attempted only twice. If the oral qualifying exam is failed twice, the student will be redirected to the M.S. degree or terminated from the program. The written and oral comprehensive examinations will normally be taken at the end of the second year of graduate study and before the start of the third year.


    All Ph.D. students must write a doctoral dissertation, which must be read and accepted by all members of the Doctoral Dissertation Committee, comprised of at least three faculty members from the ESGP. A final oral thesis defense in front of the three committee members must be passed.

    Relationship between Master‘s and Doctoral Programs The M.S. and Ph.D. programs are separate. Students who enter the Ph.D. program do not need to acquire a M.S. degree first, although students may elect to take both.
