Gartner: Top 10 cloud storage providers

According to a Gartner survey. about 19% of organizations are using the cloud for production computing, while 20% are using public cloud storage services.

That means there’s a pretty good sized market for the cloud, and specifically cloud storage. Gartner predicted in 2012 $109 billion was spent on cloud computing. a 20% increase from the year before.

But the cloud is a big industry too, with a lot of vendors seemingly having a cloud strategy today. So where do potential customers start? Recently, Gartner released a list of the top 10 cloud storage providers, based on enterprise capabilities. Below is a description of each, based on pros, cons, strengths and weaknesses.

Amazon Web Services

Like many other aspects of cloud computing, Amazon Web Services is considered a market leader in cloud storage. It’s been an early and aggressive player in the market and its services drive offerings from competitors, Gartner says, while its pricing is the “industry reference point.” Its Simple Storage Service (S3) is the basic object storage, while Elastic Block Storage is for storage volumes. AWS keeps innovating too. Earlier this year AWS announced Glacier, a long-term, low-cost archival storage services. More recently, at its first-ever user conference, AWS announced Redshift, a cloud-based data warehousing service.

AWS has challenges though, Gartner notes. While it has a tool to link on-premise data to its cloud, named AWS Storage Gateway, the ability to create hybrid storage architectures that span both on-premise storage options and AWS’s cloud is still largely a work in progress, Gartner says. AWS is an innovative company that continues to release products and services to round out its already-market leading position though. With services geared to specific vertical industries, most notably the federal government agencies with its GovCloud service, it has a wide breadth and depth of cloud storage features and services.

AT T’s Synaptic cloud storage service is aligned closely with EMC’s Atmos storage service, which is used as an on-premise storage system. This creates an opportunity for AT T to sell into the strong EMC customer base, and gives customers hybrid cloud capabilities with a leading storage vendor. Gartner says this has been focused mostly on small and midsized businesses though. Still, AT T claims it has recorded double-digit growth in its service, with several billion objects stored in its cloud. AT T Synaptic already spans multiple regions, which customers can choose to take advantage of, with plans by AT T to expand the service globally, with Europe being the next stop. Customers using AT T’s VPN service are freed from ingress and egress charges when using the company’s cloud service.

Google Cloud Storage

Launched in 2010, Google Cloud Storage is the underlying storage service for the company’s other cloud products and services, including Google App Engine – the application development platform – Google Compute Engine, and BigQuery, which are cloud-based virtual machines and a big data analysis tool, respectively. Customers access Google Cloud Storage through a restful API and the service is available in both the U.S. and Europe. Holding the company and its cloud storage platform back though is a relative lack of significant sales and support targeted at enterprise customers, Gartner notes. That leaves Google Cloud Storage ideally suited for sophisticated customers willing to set up and manage the deployment, and specifically developers looking for large storage capacity for Google applications.

HP announced the public beta of its cloud storage platform debuted in May of 2012 and it’s meant to work in tandem with both its compute and content delivery network (CDN), which it recently partnered with Akamai on. The storage platform is based on OpenStack technology and HP offers free 24/7 call and chat support on top of 99.95% availability guarantees. “Among OpenStack-based cloud storage providers, HP is well-positioned to understand enterprise IT storage requirements, due to its extensive hardware, software and service offerings,” Gartner notes. “However, since HP Cloud Object Storage is new, HP must evolve and refine its architectural, geographical and service offerings.” The system automatically replicates data across three availability zones for resiliency (which customers can choose to do in Amazon’s cloud), and HP says having information running on its hardware both in the public cloud and on customers’ premises makes for easy hybrid cloud setups.

IBM’s cloud storage is part of its SmartCloud Enterprise offering, which includes other services such as cloud-based application development and infrastructure. Gartner says the biggest deficiency is the lack of integration among the various aspects of IBM’s SmartCloud offering though. For example, IBM markets its cloud for backup and recovery, but those services do not use IBM SmartCloud Object Storage on its backend. Part of this could be because IBM partners with Nirvanix, another cloud storage provider, to run the SamrtCloud Object Storage. The disparate nature of these services under the IBM SmartCloud umbrella could create “silos of capabilities” for various services, Gartner warns. But, IBM has committed to more tightly integrating its products and services together. Its experience in selling to major IT enterprise shops gives it a significant advantage in becoming a major player in the large enterprise cloud storage market.

Internap’s history is as a managed service and collocation provider, but it has more recently emerged as a cloud player as well. Its AgileFiles cloud storage system is based off of the OpenStack Swift storage platform and is available in the U.S. Europe and Asia, with plans for future expansion. To differentiate its service, Internap has attempted to layer on advanced networking features to the service, such as a Manager Internet Route Optimizer (MIRO), which analyzes the performance of the possible routes to deliver content and chooses the best one. Gartner says its lack of enterprise presence is the biggest limitation holding the company back.

Behind Amazon Web Services, Microsoft’s Windows Azure Blob Storage may be the second most widely-used cloud storage service, Gartner predicts. It now boasts more than a trillion objects and is growing at 200% per year, Gartner says, while supporting a broad range of features including object storage, table storage, SQL Server and a content delivery network (CDN). Azure’s Blob storage is in a pricing “race to the bottom,” with Amazon, Google and Microsoft each dropping prices consistently during the past year to offer the most competitive prices among the three competitors. Gartner calls Microsoft a “fast-follower” of feature roll outs behind Amazon as well. Its tiered support options are appealing to large enterprise customers, Gartner says, providing customers a hands-on fee-based support team. Microsoft has bulked up its storage chops too by recently purchasing cloud storage gateway vendor StorSimple.

A pure-play cloud storage provider, Nirvanix is solely dedicated to this market. Gartner says that’s great for companies looking for data-intensive storage needs, but could be a drawback for customers looking for an all-inclusive vendor that would provide compute services on top of a storage platform. Nirvanix has some appealing characteristics though, including the ability to have public, hybrid or on-premise Nirvanix-powered storage services, and an all-inclusive monthly billing cycle with premium support options, a clear aim for enterprise customers, but one that may turn away small and midsized businesses that may prefer the a la carte pricing.

Rackspace is another major player in the cloud storage ecosystem, with its Cloud Files service augmented by a robust set of accompanying services, including compute infrastructure and a CDN network powered by Akamai. For high-performance storage needs, it has Cloud Block Storage, which has high input-output capabilities. Rackspace works heavily on the OpenStack open source project and its services closely follow OpenStack developments. Because of its work in the OpenStack environment, Gartner says Rackspace public cloud storage services integrate nicely with OpenStack-powered on premise clouds, creating hybrid cloud services for customers.

Softlayer’s Cloudlayer object storage system is based on the OpenStack Swift platform that accompanies a range of other services offered by Softlayer, including compute and CDN. Softlayer also has a storage-area network (SAN) offering and an international presence, with data center locations in its headquarters of Dallas, along with Amsterdam and Singapore. Its lack of support and turnkey deployment cycles, Gartner says, has meant that the product has not caught on wildly with the enterprise market yet though.

Business Voip Providers List – best Voip solutions for small business

#

Top 5 Business VoIP Providers

Have you ever wondered what VoIP could do for your business? Do you want to learn more about business VoIP? You’re in luck! This article will cover some of the top business VoIP providers and give you a quick background on how VoIP can benefit your company.

First, it is important to understand what VoIP service actually means. In technical terms, VoIP stands for voice over internet protocol. In laymen’s terms, it means that you can get phone service over the internet. This is a great option for those who have a strong internet connection and want to save money. Typically, VoIP service is less expensive than traditional phone service not because it is a poorer technology, but because big phone companies have a monopoly on the industry. This makes it a great solution for small businesses.

When looking for best VoIP for business, you should consider a few things: What services or benefits does the company offer? How are the phone signals converted into digital signals? And what do the consumer reviews look like? Keeping these questions in mind while looking for a VoIP provider will ensure that you get the best service for your money.

When searching for companies with good services and benefits, look for VoIP providers who offer things like unlimited calling, no contracts, voicemail, faxing, US-based support and low long distance rates. Next, think about how the VoIP service is hosted – or how the phone signals are turned into digital signals. There are three ways to do this: VoIP using an analogue terminal adapter (ATA), VoIP using an IP phone, or VoIP connected directly. Usually, using an IP phone is considered the best and most reliable way to get VoIP. Finally, be sure to take the time to read the reviews online. If a company has lots of complaints, you might want to reconsider using them for installing small business VoIP system.

Using our research, we have identified five companies that we feel offer consistently good service to its customers. If you are a small business looking for different phone solutions or business VOIP, you should definitely take a look at these providers.

HostMyCalls. this provider offers hosted PBX services to medium and small businesses. They have a variety of features such as unlimited local and long distance calling, low monthly fees, fax to email services, voicemail, and local numbers from other markets.

Anveo. hosted virtual PBX with services such as internet messaging, conference calling, pay as you go billing, video broadcasting, and local phone numbers available from over 48 countries.

Vocalocity. a PBX unlimited extension. They provide unlimited calling and long distance, no contracts, no setup or installation fees, voicemail and email transcription. This is a good company for VoIP systems for small businesses

Nextiva. business VOIP provider offering unlimited calling, US-based support and no contracts. Free long distance rates and a very low monthly rate. This company can be considered as the best VoIP for business.

Home Security Systems in Minnesota

Compare the Best Home Security Systems in Minnesota

The security of your house is one of the most important aspects of home ownership you should never ignore. Serious people always take effective measures to ensure their loved ones and properties are safe from any danger. There are a lot of options available in Minnesota when it comes to choosing the best home security system. In most cases, buyers find themselves with a wide variety of options to an extent where they become confused and spoiled for choice. That’s why Wirefly embarked on a journey to do an extensive research with an aim of giving people some insights on the best home security systems in Minnesota.

Wirefly has had lengthy discussions with the best security experts in the country in a bid to determine the most efficient home security systems. We also reached out to hundreds of customers who have had an experience with a security system to get some feedback on the quality of the products they used. In the end, we came up with an accurate and comprehensive report on security systems in Minnesota. In addition, we have included some crucial information on what a customer should consider when purchasing a home security system. We hope that this information will help our readers make informed decisions when buying home security systems.

What is the Cost of Home Security in Minnesota

Home security providers are abundant in Minnesota, and each one has its own plans, functions, benefits, and costs. Regardless of your particular needs, you can rest assured that there’s a suitable system out there for your house. Setup costs, hardware, and recurring surveillance fees are the three primary factors in calculating the full expense of your house’s alarm system. Having your system professionally installed could cost you as much as a couple hundred dollars, but you can install a lot of security systems yourself. A standard security system typically costs well over $200, but if you enroll in a monthly surveillance service, some companies will provide you with a system for free. With regard to surveillance services, subject to which features you need, you’ll most likely pay somewhere between $15 and over $200 each month.

The Residents of Minnesota Can Benefit From Wireless Home Security

The home security system industry has had an incredible revolution in recent times. It is now possible for clients to enjoy wireless security services in their homes. In Minnesota, wireless home security systems provide the fastest installation possible. Cellular signals facilitate wireless systems communication. It is easy to install a wireless security system because it does not require drilling of holes in your walls. The entire system components are wirelessly connected to the control panel. Therefore, you can move the parts with minimum effort. Thieves never like to encounter wireless security systems because they cannot be disabled like traditional security systems. It is impossible to disconnect cellular signals by cutting internet cables and phone lines because they do not use those mediums.

Keep More Areas Under Surveillance by Using Home Security Cameras in Minnesota

You can ask the security system company to modify your system to suit your specific needs. As the customer, you are at liberty to choose between interior cameras or exterior cameras. Moreover, you can choose more sophisticated types that have night vision and motion-activated features. These cameras will enable you to monitor any situation. You can also link your home security system to your tablet, computer, or smartphone to review previously recorded video clips from your cameras. Additionally, you can easily review the day’s important event by the use of monitor-activated cameras. Security cameras will enable you to monitor your pets, watch out for deliveries made, and know what is going on in your house when you are not around.

Smart Home Automation in Minnesota Increases Protection

Yes, homeowners can add additional smart features to their homes. There are many gadgets available that can make home life a little easier and safer. For example, door locks can now be automated. One can log in to the system anywhere and lock the doors or open them if needed. There are several reasons why someone might need to unlock their doors when they are not home. For one, this could be useful if a child or spouse forgets their keys. All one has to do is look through the digital peephole to verify that it is indeed a family member who is asking for the door to be remotely opened. Smart gadgets can be applied to your appliances, too. A heater or AC could be shut off or turned on without someone being home. This means that a homeowner can make sure his or her home is at an ideal temperature before anyone steps through the front door. The home automation system can alert a homeowner through his or her phone about more than just security breaches. The system can warn about a CO2 leak or water leak, just to name a few examples. Smart automation is the next logical, wise, and incredibly affordable step. Homeowners should take advantage of this opportunity.

The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) is the Federal Government’s lead agency for scientific research on the diverse medical and health care systems, practices, and products that are not generally considered part of conventional medicine.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is among the oldest healing practices in the world. In the United States, where practitioners incorporate healing traditions from China, Japan, Korea, and other countries. The term “acupuncture” describes a family of procedures involving the stimulation of anatomical points on the body using a variety of techniques. The acupuncture technique that has been most often studied scientifically involves penetrating the skin with thin, solid, metallic needles that are manipulated by the hands or by electrical stimulation.

Massage Therapy

Massage therapy dates back thousands of years. References to massage appear in writings from ancient China, Japan, India, Arabic nations, Egypt, Greece, and Rome.

Chiropractic

The term “chiropractic” combines the Greek words cheir (hand) and praxis (practice) to describe a treatment done by hand. Hands-on therapy—especially adjustment of the spine—is central to chiropractic care.

Chiropractic focuses on the relationship between the body’s structure—mainly the spine—and its functioning. Although practitioners may use a variety of treatment approaches, they primarily perform adjustments (manipulations) to the spine or other parts of the body with the goal of correcting alignment problems, alleviating pain, improving function, and supporting the body’s natural ability to heal itself.

An analysis of the use of complementary health practices for back pain, based on data from the 2002 National Health Interview Survey, found that chiropractic was by far the most commonly used therapy.

Traditional Chinese Medicine

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) originated in ancient China and has evolved over thousands of years. TCM practitioners use herbs, acupuncture, and other methods to treat a wide range of conditions. In the US, Traditional Chinese medicine is considered part of complementary and alternative medicine.

Naturopathic Medicine

Naturopathy—also called naturopathic medicine—is a medical system that has evolved from a combination of traditional practices and health care approaches popular in Europe during the 19th century.

We are passionate about television, if you couldn’t tell. We know digital cable TV like Harry Potter knows destiny, and we are excited to help you find your cable provider. Local governments license the ability to provide cable service in a given area, and most of these only allow for one provider. Because of this, most cable companies don’t overlap service in the same geographical region. We know which Florida cable providers operate where, so enter your zip code below to find out who is your local provider.

Business Internet Providers in Virginia Beach, VA

Kinds Of Business Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in Virginia Beach, VA

Internet options in Virginia Beach, VA have evolved quite a bit over the past 20 years, and technology continues progressing further each year. Businesses that have been using a single type of ISP, may want to examine some of the new options. These companies may find that they have a chance at a major upgrade in services. Though, each type of internet connection does come with some drawbacks that businesses should be aware of. Some kinds of internet are efficient, but may not be as available or have a limited distribution network. Before making a choice, businesses need to figure out just what options are available in their region. The most popular kinds of internet service available include, cable, satellite, fixed wireless, fiber optic cable, T1, and DSL.

Business internet service in Virginia Beach, VA is not the only feature offered by most ISPs. Businesses can also get additional services bundled together. For convenience and savings, it’s usually best to look for an ISP that provides the complete package of everything a business needs. This can include email, phone service, television, and business web hosting. Complete bundled packages are available from many ISPs, which can help businesses stay within their budget. Plus, ISPs may offer certain business services, like customer support. It keeps the costs of hiring in-house people to do the same job. Companies can also benefit from the experience of the expert IT people that ISPs provide for these services too. In the end, getting more features in a bundled package can lead to lower operating costs.

Companies in Virginia Beach, VA need an ISP that provides consultations to help them select the best service and features. A good ISP will provide an on-site consultation with an IT expert who will visit and assess the company’s needs. Usually, the IT expert will suggest options that can improve business efficiency, such as upgrading existing technology or adding remote management of devices. The expert will also provide advice on how much bandwidth is required based on the number of company employees and the number of devices used.

What to Consider When Selecting Business Internet Service in Virginia Beach, VA

It’s maddening and detrimental for a business when it takes hours to upload and download crucial data. What’s more, by selecting a slower speed to cut costs, a company may be working against their best interests. It doesn’t help to cut costs and expect fantastic results. For full competency, a business must function proficiently during peak hours when operations can become extremely busy and take into account future growth.

Bandwidth caps and throttling are also important factors when it comes to Virginia Beach, VA business internet bandwidth and speed. A business should inquire whether an ISP restricts the download speed depending on the time of day. A company should also inquire about any other aspects that may result in limitation. It’s important to consider the details of the internet service your business is signing up for. Many have restrictions included in the fine print.

In addition, a company should be leery of providers that offer diminutive security safeguards. A good business ISP in Virginia Beach, VA will offer anti-spam, anti-malware, anti-spyware defense, and anti-spam protections. The Internet provider should provide details of the quantity of protection available, mobile devices that can link to the system, and backup capabilities. Moreover, if the system breaks down, a competent provider should restore whatever was lost on the network via the backup. If the backup is located at the company site, it’s probably time to shift to a cloud-based system.

Picking the Best Business Internet Provider in Virginia Beach, VA

The ISP should always offer help, and businesses should be encouraged that help is there when needed. Having the best internet connection will make sales higher and will give all of the employees the incentive to work harder.

All businesses in Virginia Beach, VA should choose an internet provider that comes with a Service Level Agreement. This is a guarantee of almost all uninterrupted uptime. Business owners should also ask about what can be done if their internet connectivity becomes interrupted. For example, many internet providers will offer a discount on their bill if the internet goes down because of a problem on their end. Also inquire about available support lines for your company if you need to call for assistance, as well as the competency of their technicians.

Wirefly is here to help you compare the different business Internet plans in Virginia Beach, VA. You can see how well other companies have worked for people in the past, as real advice is the best kind to take. Sometimes, new service providers are added that are worth checking out. A reliable and reputable business internet provider can be tough to find if you aren’t using Wirefly.

With Business Internet in Virginia Beach, VA, Reliability and Scalability Is Crucial

The location of your business might limit your options of business providers. Despite the fact that your options are limited, you should always conduct a careful analysis of each internet provider. You will ensure that your business gets the worth of the cash you spend. You should also find out whether the ISP is adaptable to future changes. The internet is constantly evolving. Thus, a good business ISP in Virginia Beach, VA should be flexible enough to respond to the changes.

The development of the IPv6 is an example of future changes in the internet. IPv6 is set to replace IPv4 because it offers unlimited amount of IP addresses. IPv6 will play a significant role in the future because many devices have internet capability. In the future, it will be easier to connect these devices to the internet if they have a unique address. Consequently, it will be cheap for businesses to connect to the internet. Always put all these factors into consideration when searching for an ISP. It will be easier for you to increase efficiency at affordable prices.

Level 3 CDN partners with Valve

Level 3 CDN customers enjoy access to one of the highest performing content delivery network provders on the planet. Along with their main rival, Akamai, the Level 3 CDN boasts many big name customers and blistering performance. Now, Level 3 can add the games developer Valve to that list, as they have recently leveraged the Level 3 CDN to power the games they deliver online to millions of customers around the world.

The reason for this development is the huge popularity of Valve’s flagship game distribution service, Steam. Earlier this month, the service logged a record 12 million unique users at once, 20% over their average of 10 million. In addition to this, the amount of data delivered by the service averages more than 450 petabytes of data worldwide per month and four exabytes of data per year.

Level 3 CDN Benefits for Valve

Speaking of the Level 3 CDN partnership, Mike Dunkle, general business development manager at Valve, said “Level 3 has been instrumental in helping us scale our network to easily and efficiently manage the accelerated growth we’ve seen over the last several years. They’re one of the few providers that offers 100 Gbps internet ports, which are now a critical component of our network infrastructure.”

Anthony Christie, chief marketing officer at Level 3 CDN also welcomed the partnership with Valve. “While online gaming has been around for decades, game developers and distributors are encountering new challenges as online games have become more popular and bandwidth-hungry,” he said.

He also added that “Level 3’s network of 100 Gbps internet ports enables companies like Valve to securely handle massive amounts of traffic and bandwidth-heavy downloads, while still providing millions of customers with the seamless gaming experience that has made Steam a leading platform.”

ASP.NET Hosting Support

When you have an unresolved hosting problem or issue then you will need the ASP.NET hosting support. Make sure that your hosting company provide 24×7 customer support. The quality means that your will have fast answers of your questions and will receive competent solutions. You could test some company support by send them some quick questions and if you do not receive answer in the next 2 hours it will be not a good sign. Some Windows hosting companies provide Knowledge Base with answers of commonly asked questions.

Most of the best ASP.NET Hosts answer of your questions in less than 30 minutes.

ASP.NET Hosting Uptime

ASP.NET Hosting Uptime is a measure of the time a Windows Hosting Server has been “up” and running. It came into use to describe the opposite of downtime, times when a Windows Server was not operational. The uptime and reliability of Windows Server and communications facilities is sometimes measured in nines. “Five nines” means 99.999% availability, which translates to a total downtime of approximately five minutes and fifteen seconds per year.

Most of the best ASP.NET Hosts have 99.9% uptime guarantee.

ASP.NET Hosting Datacenter

This is where is physically located your Windows hosting server. It should provide the highest quality Internet connectivity, security and reliable power systems.

Some Windows hosting providers have datacenters in different locations, so you should check the locations before you sign up.

Most of the best ASP.NET Hosts have their own data centers.

ASP.NET Hosting Disk Space

This is the amount of hard drive space where are located your files, and databases. The hard drives could be single SATA, SAS or multiple hard drives in RAID. You should be sure that the hard disk space will be enough for your project. Take in mind that the used disk space includes project files, database files and log files. Some hosting providers offer second hard drive for your backups.

ASP.NET Hosting Monthly Data Transfer

ASP.NET Hosting Bandwidth is used to describe the amount of data that can be transferred to or from the ASP.NET website or Windows server, measured in bytes transferred over a prescribed period of time. This can be more accurately described as “Monthly Data Transfer.”

You could easily calculate your ASP.NET website Monthly Data Transfer, it’s just the Page/File size multiplied by the number of loads (views).

ASP.NET Hosting Control Panel

You could use an ASP.NET Hosting Control Panel for managing the Web server and installing scripts as well as other services like e-mail. Most popular Windows hosting control panel is Plesk. Some ASP.NET hosting companies offer their own hosting control panel.

The good Windows hosting control panel will make your daily tasks more easily.

ASP.NET Hosting Price

The ASP.NET Hosting price is very important, but not the most important factor when you are looking for the best ASP.NET Host. It’s more important to receive high quality hosting services than to save few bucks. Also you should take in mind that the cheaper hosting provider today could be the most expensive tomorrow, so look for the better price today but target a quality hosting services in a long term.

ASP.NET Hosting Money-back Guarantee

This option means that you could sign up with some ASP.NET hosting company and if you are not happy with the service you could get your money back. A very useful option if you are not sure if some Windows hosting company is good for you.

Most of the best ASP.NET Hosts offer at least 30 day money-back guarantee.

Types of ISP Connection

DSL Internet

Digital subscriber line (DSL) is a technology that provides Internet access by transmitting digital data over the wires of a local telephone network. DSL brings high-bandwidth information to homes and small businesses over ordinary copper telephone lines. DSL service is delivered simultaneously with wired telephone service on the same telephone line. An ordinary telephone connection jack can be used to plug in to DSL Internet access. DSL is generally much faster than a dialup connection.

How to setup DSL Internet?

Once you are sure that your DSL line is active, you can begin setup. The service requires a DSL modem, which connects to the telephone wall jack and computer. You can add a router to create a home network and with the wireless router you can enjoy high-speed access as you move around your home with a laptop, even connecting from the front porch or backyard.

What are the top DSL ISP Providers?

Internet service providers that offer access via cable infrastructures are typically the local cable company, the same company that provides television and voice services. TV signal comes into your home on, but does not effect or interfere with your TV signal. Therefore you can use your internet service and watch TV at the same time without any problems.

Typically, internet speed is higher with cable internet service than it is with DSL internet service. The speed of a DSL connection is based on how close your house is to the phone company, a cable connection will have a consistent speed no matter how far away the cable company is.

Wi-Fi provides service in private homes, high street chains and independent businesses, as well as in public spaces at Wi-Fi hotspots set up either free-of-charge or commercially. It is a packaged internet service deal that provides the ability to access the internet wirelessly from any location within the service’s coverage area. Areas that provide wireless broadband internet service are known as hotspots. Some localities provide free wireless Internet for residents and visitors.

Satellite Internet services utilize telecommunications satellites in Earth orbit to provide Internet access to consumers. Satellite Internet access is Internet access provided through satellites.

Similar to satellite TV, satellite internet offers you a high-speed internet connection without the need for a phone line or hard-wired cable. XDSL is first in South Africa to offer a free hosted

#

XDSL is first in South Africa to offer a free hosted PBX solution

XDSL, a local Internet Service Provider, is presenting mid- to large sized organisations with a South African first: a hosted, fully managed, enterprise grade PABX with all the bells and whistles running on a Diginet line. It comes in at a fraction of standard costs. Users do not pay for the PBX platform or per extension; they only pay for physical access—achieving savings on infrastructure and call costs, as well as monthly operating costs.

Says XDSL director Danie Fourie: “A hosted PABX solution has been on the wish list of many organisations for some time. PBXs can be costly. Organisations have to factor in hardware and line rental costs, per minute billing, and the skills or support required to configure and run the PABX. XDSL’s hosted PBX offering does away with most of these challenges while providing greater flexibility and all the reliability organisations need from a voice service.”

The virtual PABX is hosted at XDSL’s data centre. Incoming and outgoing calls are routed to and from the client organisation via an XDSL supplied Diginet line to XDSL’s hosted cloud-based PBX, from where calls are connected to their destination. The hosted PBX offers the user all the control an onsite PBX would, with 24×7 specialist support from XDSL data centre personnel.

Some of the hosted PBX features, which the user can access via a Web portal, include alerts, call screening, classes of service, call forwarding, click to dial, caller line ID, conferencing, hunt groups, feature codes, voice mail, number porting, call history, pickup groups, balance notification and speed dials. There is a central management interface for all organisations, including those with multiple branches, with live reporting and individual billing.”

So, how does pricing compare? For a 512k, 32-channel Diginet line from Telkom, users generally pay R3 500.00 per month with a R20 000.00 installation fee. XDSL offers the same capacity for R1 800.00 a month, with only a R3 000.00 installation fee. For a 128k, 8-channel Diginet solution from XDSL, which would be suitable for about 40 users (depending on average usage profile), the cost is R634.00, which is comparable to an ADSL solution. There are no additional PBX usage fees. There are also no “per extension” costs for every user in the organization connected to the PBX, an excessive “extra” cost that has become typical in the industry, Fourie suggests.

XDSL’s comprehensive Diginet connectivity solution offers guaranteed throughput, is fully managed and includes the rental of Cisco routers, rental of the Diginet line, and Voice over Internet Broadband Enhancement (ViBE) software and licenses.

Fourie notes that usage costs are also very likely to drop. “XDSL’s call billing, depending on the user profile, is 30 to 40 percent lower than that of Telkom,” notes Fourie, “because we do per second rather than per minute billing, and we do it at a lower rate. In addition, where Diginet VoIP is used, inter-branch call costs are free.”

Further savings can be gained from interrogating and setting alerts via the central PBX management system to notify administrators when there is “abuse” of the service—for example, when personal numbers are dialled excessively or calls frequently exceed maximum time thresholds for defined interactions (e.g. call centre sales).

XDSL believes its fully hosted PBX solution is going to set the pace in the industry going forward. “While we can assist organisations who would like to maximise their existing investment in a PBX by offering just a Diginet connection or even a hybrid solution (whereby the onsite PBX synchs with XDSL’s hosted PBX and becomes the back-up or fail-over solution), we are convinced that as PBX equipment ages out, the preferred option will be for a hosted PBX. Quite simply, the expense is smaller and the benefits are exponentially higher —there is no capital investment in hardware, there is no risk, and the service is backed by 24×7 expert support.”

XDSL currently has 33 000 local extensions running on its hosted PBX service. “It’s a proven offering we are now eager to launch more broadly. Our current clients—primarily mid- to large sized organisations that are located across the country—are already reaping the cost and service benefits of our hosted PBX, PBX management platform and Diginet offering

ASP.NET Hosting Requirements

Your Windows hosting company should support the latest .NET technologies and their most recent versions.

Can we trust cloud providers to keep our data safe? BBC

Can we trust cloud providers to keep our data safe?

Image copyright Getty Images Image caption Keep me safe: Are big cloud providers better at protecting our data from cyber-attacks?

Cloud computing – storing data and applications remotely rather than on your own premises – can cut IT costs dramatically and speed up your operations.

Despite the rise of public cloud platforms offered by the likes of Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud, less than 10% of the world’s data is currently stored in the cloud.

So what’s holding many companies back?

Technology of Business explores the issue of cloud security.

What’s so good about the cloud anyway?

Building your own energy-hungry data centres is expensive and time-consuming, while managing hundreds of software applications chews up IT resources.

If you can outsource a lot of this hardware and software to specialist tech companies that can expand or reduce the level of service according to your needs, it can save you a lot of time and money.

“Business leaders are looking to optimise and grow their businesses, and cloud can give them that – reducing costs and providing better customer experience,” says Gavan Egan, managing director of cloud and IT solutions for global telecoms giant, Verizon.

And being able to plug into a range of ready-made cloud-based services helps you develop new products at a faster pace, potentially giving you a competitive edge.

What are the risks?

“The biggest risk is giving up control of your data to someone else using different data centres in remote places,” says Mr Egan. “What happens in the event of a disaster? You’re also putting your data next to someone else’s.”

In other words, your data could get lost, wiped, corrupted or stolen.

There is also a risk that by outsourcing file and data management to a third party, firms will assume all the security has been taken care of, argues Kamran Ikram, managing director of consultancy Accenture’s infrastructure and security practice.

“You can’t assume that – it’s still your data and you are responsible for it.”

So how do cloud providers keep our data safe?

The most obvious way is through encryption, both while the data is in transit and while it is “at rest” on the cloud servers, explains Ian Massingham, Amazon Web Services’ (AWS) chief evangelist for Europe, Middle East and Africa.

AWS, by far the biggest public cloud platform provider with more than a million active customers a month, has more than 1,800 security controls governing its services, says Mr Massingham.

Customers can choose to control their own encryption keys if they wish, he says, as well as set the rules for who can and can’t access the data or applications.

“Most of our security innovation comes from customer demand,” he says, “so the bar for security gets ratcheted up every time.

“But we’re not the owners or custodians of the data – we just supply the resources,” he says. “We don’t control how the data is protected, customers do.”

It says a lot that online retailer Amazon is happy to run its entire business on its own cloud platform.

What other security methods do they use?

Mark Crosbie, international head of trust and security for Dropbox, the cloud file storage and collaboration company, says the way data is encrypted can also increase the level of security.

“We split each data file into chunks – a process called sharding,” he says, “and these chunks are then separately encrypted and stored in different places, so if someone did manage to break in and decrypt the data they’d only get access to random blocks.”

Media playback is unsupported on your device

Aaron Levie, chief executive of cloud rival Box, says: “Instead of sending the files, Box sends a link to the file – you can preview the content without actually downloading the data. Our software was designed to deliver a much more secure way of sharing content.”

Dropbox also encourages companies to use two-factor authentication – passwords supplemented by a one-time code generated by a different device, such as a smartphone or fob.

“The bad guys always target the password – people are still the weakest link,” says Mr Crosbie.

So is data actually safer in the cloud?

Well, that depends on the quality of your cloud provider compared to that of your own IT department.

Most of the major data breaches that have taken place over the last five years, from Sony to Ashley Madison, TalkTalk to Target, have been from internal, not cloud-based, databases, says Amichai Shulman, chief technology officer of cybersecurity firm, Imperva.

Image copyright Reuters Image caption Would Ashley Madison-style data breaches occur less often if data were stored in the cloud?

But he adds: “There is always an inherent threat that administrative personnel working for a cloud provider could access your machines or data from within – that’s a business risk you are taking.”

This is why the major cloud providers give customers the option to handle their own encryption keys, meaning no-one inside the provider could get access even if they wanted to.

And some companies are now adopting a “hybrid” approach – keeping their more sensitive data in a private cloud and other data and applications in the public cloud.

If it’s so safe, why isn’t everyone moving to the cloud?

Good point. These are still early days – less than 10% of the world’s data is estimated to be stored in the cloud.

“Financial institutions have been reluctant to go to the cloud because there may be holes in the model – they’re risk averse,” says Accenture’s Kamran Ikram.

Image copyright Amazon Web Services Image caption US bank Capital One believes it can now operate more securely on Amazon’s cloud platform

But even this understandably cautious sector is gradually beginning to trust it.

Late last year, US bank Capital One said it was reducing the number of its own data centres from eight to three by 2018 and moving a lot of its processes and product development to AWS.

And Towergate Insurance recently announced that it was migrating its IT infrastructure to the public cloud as well.

Where is all this data stored?

The major public cloud providers offer a number of data centres – AWS covers 12 regions globally – storing multiple copies of customer data. So if one centre is destroyed in an earthquake or other natural disaster, your data is still safe.

But concerns around data privacy, particularly in Europe following the rescinding of the Safe Harbour data sharing agreement and the Edward Snowden leaks. mean providers are increasingly offering the option to host data in customers’ own regions.

Image copyright Thinkstock Image caption Data centres can be anywhere in the world, but firms often want their data kept closer to home

US file storage and collaboration firm Box, for example, recently announced it would be expanding its data storage locations to Germany, Ireland, Singapore and Tokyo, by piggybacking on existing cloud infrastructures provided by IBM and AWS.

Having this choice is particularly important for heavily-regulated sectors, such as financial services and healthcare.

How do you choose a good cloud provider?

That largely depends on what you want it to do. Certain cloud providers specialise in specific functions: Salesforce for sales and customer data; Workday for finance and human resources; Box for file sharing, for example.

But first and foremost, a cloud provider must understand your business, says Verizon’s Mr Egan.

“Do they understand the regulatory requirements governing payment card or health data, for example,” he asks. “And can they prove that they can do what they say they can do?”

Imperva’s Amichai Shulman says prospective customers should also ask to see up-to-date certificates from international security standards organisations.

But reputation is as good a guide as any.

VoIP for Business: Why It Makes Sense #voip #providers #small #business

VoIP for Business: Why It Makes Sense

Credit: Brian A. Jackson/Shutterstock

With VoIP, voice data is sent [via an Internet connection] in digital form rather than plugging into a traditional phone jack like you would over the public switched telephone network (PSTN), Tina Liu, senior product marketing manager for 8×8. told Business News Daily.

First introduced commercially in the 1990s, VoIP technology has improved significantly since then, and so has its popularity. In the early days, users complained that the sound quality wasn t as good on VoIP as it was on a landline, but those issues aren t a concern today.

VoIP systems now take advantage of advanced high-definition codecs that have vastly improved the voice quality, making modern VoIP networks sound even better than landline networks, said Matt McGinnis, associate vice president of product marketing for VoIP provider RingCentral .

In addition to better sound quality, the cloud is also making VoIP a more viable option for small businesses. Rather than having to run special wiring and install special equipment, companies that choose a cloud-hosted VoIP phone solution don t need to purchase any equipment or employ an IT staff to install and maintain it.

Cloud VoIP systems dispense with most of the up-front hardware and software and only require a broadband connection to activate, McGinnis said. This reduces the amount of capital expenditure needed and makes it easy to turn up and deploy.

The advancement of VoIP technology and its relatively low cost make VoIP an ideal choice for small business, but businesses should still do their homework before committing.

Is VoIP right for you?

Determining if a VoIP phone system makes sense for a small business all depends on the quality of its network and its needs, said Chris Sherwood, an Oregon-based phone system consultant .

Most importantly, you want to ensure they have enough upload bandwidth for the amount of phone calls they expect to have running concurrently, Sherwood said, commenting on what he looks at when deciding if VoIP is a good option.

In addition, businesses also have to factor in whether they have enough bandwidth to handle the other traffic on the network, and whether or not their firewall and router can prioritize VoIP traffic over regular Internet traffic, Sherwood said.

If the network can support it, than VoIP is likely a good option for many businesses.

For businesses where VoIP does makes sense, there are many benefits, including reduction in costs in terms of both maintenance and monthly recurring usage, ease of use and enhanced features that you would previously only find in an enterprise-level PBX, Sherwood said.

Voicemail, virtual receptionists, call forwarding, call recording, on-hold music, voicemail-to-email, conference calling, video conferring, instant messaging, call screening, missed alerts and call logs are among the many features offered by most VoIP providers.

Ease of use

Lisa Chu, owner of the children s formal clothing company BlackNBianco. said that she likes that her VoIP system has eliminated all of the complicated tech support that her landline required.

When the landline goes down, diagnosing and fixing the issues are never easy or quick, leaving me and my employees extremely frustrated, Chu said. VoIP is very user-friendly, and having the proper network, we have yet to encounter any significant issues that hinder our ability to communicate with our customers.

Using a cloud-based solution also makes it simple to add phone lines when new employees are hired, said Tyler Yost, director of strategy at the marketing company Blue Corona. He said his company has grown numerous times over the past five years, and each time, it was a simple process to add phone lines.

We click two buttons on the interface online, the phone arrives a few days later, we plug it into an Ethernet port and we re off and running, Yost said.

One of the biggest advantages of VoIP, especially for businesses with employees who work remotely or in multiple locations, is that it allows employees to bring their business phone line with them anywhere they go. Most VoIP providers have a mobile app that can be set up to ring when a customer or client calls an employee s business line. Additionally, these apps allow employees to use their business line to make outgoing calls from their mobile phones.

Elizabeth Becker, a client partner for the Florida-based IT staffing firm Protech. said she likes that their VoIP system allows for employees to be location-independent.

VoIP systems allow for business as usual, no matter where your employees may be physically sitting, Becker said. By having a VoIP system, it s easier to give a little flexibility to employees while still staying connected.

Cost considerations

Cost is another reason businesses are making the switch to VoIP. Most VoIP providers charge a monthly per-user fee, rather than a fee based on how many minutes everyone in the company spends on the phone. That, along with not having to spend exorbitant amounts of money on special equipment as well as on an IT staff to keep it up and running can be a significant cost savings for many small businesses.

Some cloud-based solutions are as cheap as $10 to $25 per user, per month.

A major advantage of VoIP and Internet telephony is that it avoids the tolls charged by ordinary telephone service, Liu said. In addition, all of your business phone service, IM/Presence, mobility, videoconferencing service and calling charges including local, long distance and toll free can be consolidated with one VoIP provider.
