Counseling Psychology

Counseling psychology focuses on the normal adaptation of individuals to their environment and with helping others cope with crises, problems of daily living and mental challenges. Traditionally, counseling psychology has been concerned with the preventative aspects of mental health and an emphasis on client strengths. The counseling psychology program at UNT is committed to the idea that human problems are the result of complex interaction of environmental factors and developmental changes in the person. The program provides professional training within the broad context of the scientist-practitioner model. The Director of counseling psychology training at UNT is Chiachih DC Wang, Ph.D..

The Ph.D. with a major in counseling psychology prepares students for work as independent professionals in research, academic, or applied settings. The counseling psychology doctoral program is fully accredited by the American Psychological Association’s Committee on Accreditation [750 First Street NE, Washington, D.C. 20002-4242, telephone (202) 336-5979]. The program was first accredited in 1978 under the directorship of Ray W. Johnson, Ph.D.

Students applying to the Counseling Psychology doctoral program to be admitted in Fall 2017 should adhere to the following dates:

  1. Applications (two online applications submitted to separate web-portals) are due on December 1, 2016.
  2. Applicants will be notified by December 31, 2016 whether they are invited to the campus interview day (Notifications to applicants who are invited to the campus interview on January 27th have been sent and confirmed in late December. For those who do not receive a notification, we appreciate your patience and interest in our program.).
  3. Campus interviews will be held on January 27, 2017.
  4. Offers of admission will be made by February 10, 2017.
  5. Final acceptance notifications from applicants are due on April 15, 2017.

This year, our program will hold campus interviews on only one day (January 27, 2017). The campus interview day is a whole-day event that provides the opportunity for program faculty, current students, and applicants to learn about each other. It plays a critical role in our admission decisions. Master s Degree Programs in Forensic Psychology

Pursuing a career in forensic psychology can be an exciting way to enter the field of forensics for someone who has an undergraduate background in psychology. A forensic psychologist is someone who uses their training in psychology, including evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment, to work within some aspect of the criminal justice system. A forensic psychologist could be a therapist in a prison, an expert witness in court, a criminal profiler, or any combination of those.

While forensic psychologists must have graduate level training, they do not necessarily have to study in a forensic psychology master s or doctorate program. Those that choose to seek a master s degree in forensic psychology should consider the necessary prerequisites for this type of program, the types of courses they might end up taking, and how they would like to pursue this advanced degree.

Prerequisites for a Master s Degree in Forensic Psychology

As with any master s degree program, any student wishing to apply to forensic psychology masters programs must have completed, or be on track to complete, an undergraduate degree. Most programs do not require that degree to be in forensic psychology, or in psychology at all. However, certain courses are usually required, such as Statistics and introductory level courses to psychology and to experimentation. For promising candidates, many schools exercise the option to grant conditional admission for students that have not completed all requisite courses, provided they can complete them within their first semester of the graduate program.

Many selective programs also have a minimum GPA for applicants to their graduate level programs. This helps narrow the applicant field to those who have proven they can function successfully at an institute of higher learning. Most master s degree programs also require applicants take the GRE and may have established minimum scores for admission.

Applicants should always keep in mind the requirements for individual programs can vary greatly and be sure to check with a program before applying.

Luckily, some forensic psychology master s degree programs do offer the option to study online, in part or in full, which can make attending graduate school that much more convenient. For instance, the Center for Psychological Studies at Nova Southeastern University offers an entirely online master s of science degree in forensic psychology. Argosy University. which focuses on online learning for all their courses of study, also offers an entirely online Master of Arts degree in forensic psychology. Some schools offer programs that are mostly or partially online. For example, the University of North Dakota offers a Master of Arts degree in forensic psychology that includes online lectures and one campus visit. Students in the UND program are eligible for in-state tuition no matter where they reside.

Students should remember that these programs may still require some degree of in-person work, particularly when it comes to practicums that may required for the completion of the degree or for future licensing.


Finding a school that is accredited is essential, particularly for those students who plan to seek licensure in the future.Accreditation means that the forensic psychology master s degree program meets certain requirements in terms of its curriculum, faculty, and facilities. Schools may be accredited as an institute for higher learning, by an organization such as the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). Similar commissions exist for different areas of the country. As an example, John Jay College of Criminal Justice has accreditation from the MSCHE.

However, forensic psychology programs themselves can also earn accreditation separately from such professional organizations as the American Psychological Association (APA). In many instances, those students wishing to pursue an internship and eventually licensure may be required to study at an APA-accredited school.

    Purpose of Program

    This program is designed for students who want to work with children and adolescents experiencing a wide range of academic, emotional, and behavioral difficulties. Common roles and functions of the School Psychologist include psychological assessment, counseling, consultation, crisis intervention, research, and program evaluation. School Psychologists work with students, their families, and school staff in order to help students be as successful as possible in school. The program is designed to provide students the academic and practical training necessary to become licensed as a Licensed Specialist in School Psychology by the Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychologists. Graduates are eligible to apply for certification as a Nationally Certified School Psychologist, which is a nationally-recognized professional certification granted by the National Association of School Psychologists.

    Program Options

    The National Association of School Psychologists and the Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychologists both require master’s and specialist-level programs in School Psychology to include at least 60 hours of coursework, including practicum and internship. These entities also provide very specific courses and domains of competence that must be reflected in the curriculum. The degree requirements and curriculum reflect these standards, which will facilitate the professional accreditation of the program and the licensure of our graduates. The requirements also are consistent with those of other School Psychology programs within the state.

    The Master of Arts in School Psychology is a 66-hour program, and typically requires three to four years to complete. The program includes coursework and field-based experiences related to psychological assessment, intervention, learning, child development, psychopathology, research, statistics, and professional issues. Students also complete a full-time internship in a school setting. Due to the clinical nature of this program and number of hours required, the degree does not have a Thesis option.

    Career Opportunities

    School Psychology has been identified by the U.S. Department of Labor as a specialization that is likely to have faster than average employment growth. In addition, Texas has been identified as a state that will encounter one of the most serious shortages of School Psychologists in the near future. Thus, the job prospects for School Psychologists are very favorable. Minority and bilingual school psychologists are especially needed given the increasing diversity of public schools.

    Admission Requirements

    All applicants must meet UTSA Graduate School admission requirements and be in good standing with last institution attended. In addition, applicants must meet/fulfill the following departmental requirements or submissions:

    • Official transcripts indicating a bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Special Education, Curriculum Instruction, Sociology, or closely related field
    • Grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) in the last 60 semester credit hours of coursework for the baccalaureate degree, as well as in all graduate-level coursework taken (if applicable). If an applicant’s GPA is between 2.70 and 2.99, probationary admission may be granted and the student must maintain a minimum of a 3.0 GPA during the first 12 hours of coursework
    • GRE Test Scores (including the Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Analytical Writing tests). GRE scores cannot be more than 5 years old
    • Applicants whose native language is not English must submit an official score on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Minimum scores include a score of at least 550 on the TOEFL Paper version, or a score of at least 79 on the TOEFL Internet version
    • Two letters of recommendation from professional references. These letters should specifically address the applicant’s academic and/or professional skills, and potential to succeed in a rigorous graduate program
    • A Statement of Purpose (approximately 500 words) which outlines the applicant’s: (1) reasons for pursuing the M.A. degree in School Psychology; (2) experiences relevant to the field of psychology or education; and (3) career plans

    Anyway, I wanted to know if you might ever do an episode about eating disorders. I m a current residential patient at McCallum Place in St. Louis think it might be an interesting topic. Obviously I m biased because it s relevant to me, but I think other listeners may benefit from it, too. I know that s a vague thing to say: do an episode on EDs , but maybe something like the mental changes that happen to a person with an eating disorder (mood irregularities, how different a personality can radically change, weak central coherence the rumination that occurs in a person suffering from an ED) or I m not sure you could probably come up with ideas of things to talk about

    I m not sure if you would care to do that at all it s understandable if you don t; it s a scary topic, but an interesting one, psychologically speaking (in my opinion).

    I am beginning a PhD and I need to develop several experiments for children. In general, experiments will have to show two images in the screen for some milliseconds (about 800ms) and then give the option to choose one of the two images by keyboard (or mouse) depending on a question. The reaction time is very important to be recorded. All the data has to be recorded in xls or csv for my posterior analysis.
    I would like not have to program if it is possible. Could you please give me any advice on which platform or web or software may I use to do these kinf of experiments? Could be for example ZebraZapps or something better or easier or whatever ?

    What is the Difference Between Organizational Psychology and General Psychology?


    The psychology field consists of a wide variety of specialty areas (i.e. geriatric, organizational, sports, health, family, individual, group, couples, spiritual, pediatric, etc.). In fact, most psychologists work with diverse populations (i.e. racial, religious, cultural, class, economic levels, personalities, etc.). Some psychologists work in organizations, while others work in private practices, skilled nursing facilities (nursing homes), social service agencies, and/or educational/research institutions.

    Regardless of the specialty, all psychologists hold a doctorate (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) from a graduate school. They also have licenses and certifications in their chosen fields. Truth-be-told, with all of the variety, trying to understand the differences between the specialties can get quite confusing. Lucky for you, I am here to help you understand the mesmerizing, but overwhelming branches of psychology.

    One of the main differences between organizational psychology and general psychology is that organizational psychology focuses on the workplace (organizations). It evaluates workplace practices and processes, employee work performances, and employee mental/emotional health. While general psychology primarily focuses on human thought processes and behaviors. Moreover, general psychologists treat a variety of psychological disorders and mental illnesses, while organizational psychologists provide counseling and coaching services to employees.

    Organizational Psychology

    Organizational psychology, also referred to as industrial psychology, and industrial-organizational psychology. is the study of workplace practices. In other words, this type of psychology typically occurs in organizations (i.e. companies, agencies and businesses). Some organizations employ Employee Assistance Program Counselors (EAP), who counsel employees with issues that can affect their job performance and mental/emotional well-beings.

    These mental health professionals also refer employees to outside services, if needed. Organizational psychologists. in general, focus on the emotional well-beings of employees. For instance, if an employee is experiencing problems at home that appear to be affecting his or her work performance, an organizational psychologist will meet with that individual, and help him or her resolve the issues, so that he or she can be more productive at work.

    These psychologists help organizations achieve the following initiatives: improving workplace processes, increasing productivity and quality scores, ensuring fairness and equality in the workplace, strengthening upper management and employee relationships, and monitoring the psychological well-beings of company employees. Organizational psychologists may provide these services with individual employees, groups of employees, and/or with the organization, as a whole. These professionals use a variety of psychological strategies, approaches, techniques, and methods to implement changes within the organizations.

    The primary tasks of an organizational psychologist are: assessing workplace practices, talking with employees, “diagnosing” workplace problems, developing solutions, and implementing those changes. It can take up to seven (7) years to complete a doctoral program in organizational psychology. It is important to note that some colleges/universities offer organizational psychology graduate programs (master’s programs), which is important because some organizations will hire individuals with just a master’s degree, and a license/certification. Once an individual has completed a doctoral program, and acquired the necessary licenses and certifications, he or she will be able to seek employment as organizational psychologist.

    General Psychology

    General psychology, on the other hand, is the study of human thought processes and behaviors. General psychologists provide counseling services to diverse populations with a variety of psychological and mental health issues (i.e. cognitive and behavioral problems and disorders). These mental health professionals usually do not specialize in a certain area of psychology; rather they examine, explore, evaluate, diagnosis, and treat a myriad of issues. A general psychologist uses many different psychological approaches, methods, and techniques (i.e. behavioral studies, psychological assessments, statistics) to research, evaluate, and treat clients.

    Moreover, they venture into many areas of psychology like: cognitive psychology. child psychology. developmental psychology. experimental psychology. personality psychology. social psychology. health psychology. forensic psychology. environmental psychology, and psychopharmacology. It is important to note that many technical, community, and traditional colleges/universities also offer associate, bachelor and master degrees in general psychology. Also, even if an individual earns an associate’s degree, bachelor’s degree, or master’s degree in general psychology, it does not mean that he or she is qualified to call himself or herself a psychologist.

    In fact, only an individual, who has earned a doctorate (i.e. Ph.D. or Psy.D.) in psychology, and acquired a license/certification in his or her chosen field, is allowed to provide psychological services to patients, and/or clients. A master’s degree and a license/certification in general psychology will allow an individual to call himself or herself a therapist, marriage and family therapist, or psychotherapist, while an associate’s or bachelor’s degree, and a license/certification in general psychology will only allow him or her to be referred to as a counselor. It typically takes 2 years to complete a general psychology associate’s program, 4 years to complete a bachelor’s program, 2.5 to 3 years to complete a graduate program (master’s program), and up to 7 years to complete a doctoral program.

    Education and Salary Comparison

    An organizational psychologist must earn at least a master’s degree in the field (although most employers prefer a doctorate). Also, he or she must have a license or certification in the field to provide counseling services to employees. On the other hand, a general psychologist can hold an associate’s, bachelor’s, and/or master’s degree in general psychology, although he or she will not be able to call himself or herself a general psychologist, without a doctorate and license/certification.

    Altogether it can take up to 13.5 years (bachelor (4), master (2.5), and doctorate (7)) to become an organizational psychologist. Furthermore, organizational psychologists typically earn higher salaries than general psychologist or those with an associate’s, bachelor’s, or master’s degree in general psychology. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (2014), industrial-organizational psychologists typically earn between $50,000 and 140,000, per year, on average, while general psychologists typically earn between $43,000 and $117,000, per year, on average.

    Organizational psychologists earn more because organizational psychology is considered a specialty field, while general psychology is not. On the other hand, because general psychology is more “general” in nature, there are more opportunities for employment. Why? Well, people with general psychology degrees are able to enter a variety of industries (i.e. social services, education, research, business, etc.) Organizational psychologist jobs, on the other hand, are often limited to organizations.

    Masters Degree in Applied Behavior Analysis

    Behavior analysis is the science of the causes of behavior. In applied behavior analysis, this science is applied to significant problems of human behavior, typically at the level of the individual rather than of the group. The scope of behavior analysis is wide-ranging, including work in developmental disabilities, in behavioral medicine, education, and organizations, to mention just a few applications. Mastery of applied behavior analysis calls for competence in basic psychology, in the detailed knowledge base of behavior analysis, in measurement techniques for evaluating existing behavior and for designing treatment programs for individuals and in the various skills essential to delivering services and maintaining their effectiveness.

    Applied behavior analysis requires accountability in its service delivery. The UMBC M.A. track is responsive to the increasing call for such services and fills a gap in the availability of such programs in the mid- Atlantic region. The UMBC Department of Psychology together with the Kennedy Krieger Institute’s (KKI) Department of Behavioral Psychology are uniquely suited to support a rigorous program in applied behavior analysis. The track is accredited by the Association of Behavior Analysis International and is included in the list of programs approved by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board, so that students who have completed our M.A. degree are qualified and well prepared to sit for the BCBA certification examination.

    The dimensions considered by the Application Committee include grades (GPA), Graduate Record Exam (GRE) scores, three letters of recommendation (preferably including academic as well as work-related references), work experience related to applied behavior analysis, self-statements (including the applicant’s stated reasons for an interest in applied behavior analysis at UMBC, in response to items on the supplemental application) and other information presented by the applicant in the application or during interviews. Where applicants cannot visit UMBC or the KKI facilities, interviews can be conducted by telephone. The decisions of the committee also take into account the applicant pool in combination with an applicant’s fit to available faculty members.

    Applicants with questions about the academic and clinical aspects of the ABA MA program should begin by sending an email message to both co-directors. Potential applicants should provide some information both about their educational background (an attached unofficial copy of the applicant’s transcript can be helpful) and about the nature of their interest in a career in applied behavior analysis (including relevant work experience). In case a discussion, rather than an email reply, seems appropriate, inquiries should also include phone contact information (numbers and best times to call).

    The application deadline is January 1.

    Sports Psychology Degree Programs Schools

    Compared to the rest of the disciplines under the umbrella of psychology, sports psychology is relatively new. Formally, it has only been around since the 1920s when European countries starting measuring the body and mind and the effect of sports on both. The discipline is rapidly growing in popularity however as professional teams in every major sport have started to tap into psychology to help get the most out of players mentally. Simply put, sports psychology focuses on using knowledge of kinesiology, biomechanics and plenty more to study what factors of psychology impact performance and vice versa.

    Ostensibly, a sports psychologist’s primary task is to focus on training and honing the minds of athletes to improve performance on the field or on the court. But sports psychologists can also work with coaches and parents regarding subjects like the mental side of injury and rehab, how to foster team communication and how to improve communication with an athlete or athletes.

    There are three types of officially recognized sports psychologists:

    • Applied Sport Psychology – This is teaching skills to enhance athletic performance
    • Clinical Sport Psychology – This combines mental training strategies from sport psychology with psychotherapy to help those with mental health issues
    • Academic Sport Psychology – This is more of the teaching at colleges and universities and conducting research.

Also, the U.S. Army is, somewhat surprisingly, the country’s largest employer of sport and performance psychologists. In military settings, performance psychologists work with soldiers and their families on any number of issues.

    Bachelor’s Degree in Sports Psychology

    There aren’t many Bachelor’s degree in Sports Psychology but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a recommended undergraduate path to entering the field. The Association of Applied Sports Psychology keeps a list of all the undergraduate programs around the country. Considering that most sports psychology positions will require a Master’s or Doctoral degree, it is best for students to consider a Bachelor’s degree to be the foundation of their education. If you are interested in pursuing a Master’s degree in Sports Psychology, there are a number of undergraduate opportunities that would help set a student up for niche graduate work.

    For example, a student applying to study biomechanics should have at least some background coursework in physics or an exercise physiology student should have a background in biological sciences. This means that a sport and exercise psychology student, should have some coursework showing a background in psychology. This doesn’t necessarily mean majoring in psychology, but a background is helpful.

    Master’s Degree in Sports Psychology

    Most Master’s degrees in the field are designed to take two years of full-time study. Students generally complete 24 credit hours of coursework in kinesiology, research methods and statistics, psychology and human development. Students will likely complete a thesis with the idea of preparing them for a Doctoral degree program in the field.

    Master’s degree holders can start careers in athletic administration, health care, and social work.

The PhD program is designed to educate and prepare students to pursue employment in academic settings.

    The degree requires a minimum of 34 credit hours beyond the master’s degree and almost always includes a real-world experience requirements.

    Career Outlook for Sports Psychologists

    Most careers in sports psychology require a doctoral degree.

    There is not a lot of salary information available specific to health and medical psychologists. But, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. clinical psychologists earned an annual average salary of $70,580 as of 2014.

    According to estimates from Scott Goldman, the director of clinical and sport psychology at the University of Arizona, sport psychologists in university athletic departments can earn $60,000 to $80,000 a year depending on location and the highest salaries can exceed $100,000 annually.

    In private practice, the salary range is quite wide. According to Mark Aoyagi, director of sport and performance psychology at the University of Denver, sports psychology is still a boutique service that is catered to individual clients who pay for the services out of their own pockets. Thus it can be fluid.

    Certifications and Licensing for Sports Psychology

    There aren’t any specific regulations about sports psychologists on the books. But almost all sports psychologists should expect to earn licensure as a clinical psychologist first. It is important to check with the state board of licensing where you want to practice for licensing requirements and examinations.

    Certification is available through the Association of Applied Sports Psychology. The Society of Sport, Exercise and Performance Psychology has a lot of continuing education resources as well and it is a division of the APA.

    M.S. Industrial/Organizational Program


    The Master of Science Degree in Industrial & Organizational Psychology provides a comprehensive slate of I/O-specific courses designed to prepare students for immediate entry into careers in applied settings. Academic coursework is supplemented with an applied externship completed for academic credit. The program requirements provide excellent preparation for those interested in pursuing a Ph.D. upon completion of the MS. The course of study also includes a strong, five-course quantitative sequence in research methodology, statistics, and measurement. I/O students are expected to become competent in theory, research, and application of psychology as each relates to human behavior in private and public organizations.

    The primary objective of the industrial/organizational program is to provide students with the skills to apply the principles and methods of psychology to organizations, public and private, and to settings where people are engaged in work. To be successful in this application, the graduate must have developed knowledge and appreciation of psychological theory and research as they apply to organizations and people at work, and mastery of the measurement and research technologies which are commonly used in the discipline.

    Externship Program

    The externship program is currently under the direction of Dr. Ken Shultz. The standard externship experience is at least half-time work over a three-month period. It is typically completed during the summer after the first year’s coursework. Southern California’s urban areas provide a wealth of opportunities for hands-on experience. Students have completed externships with such organizations as Sempra (Southern California Gas Company), The Los Angeles Unified School District, the Betty Ford Center, Edison International, and Fleetwood Enterprises. We believe the externship experience is a major contributing factor to the marketability of our graduating students.

    You will learn about the core areas of psychology; biological, cognitive, developmental, social and individual differences. These core areas are underpinned with research methods, which is integrated into your learning across the modules, as well as being a standalone module.     The University offers two routes for entry under the scheme and applicants will be directed to the one appropriate for their course. As this course is part of the School of Health Sciences you will only be considered under Entry Route 1.

    The Psychology department offers extensive resources and equipment, and I was able to use the functional neuroimaging facilities for my Dissertation project. All of these resources complement the course.

    We provide a comfortable and friendly environment for you to carry out a wide range of psychological testing. These include:

    • The eyetracker laboratory uses the Tobii x50 eyetracker to monitor conscious and unconscious gaze movements
    • An observation suite with a two-way mirror
    • A video game analysis laboratory where you can analyse the psychological and physiological effects of violent video games
    • A dedicated computer suite that allows access to a range of psychological programs such as ERTSLab and E-Prime.

    The clinical science program at Rutgers is designed for students with a primary interest in research and scholarship in addition to clinical practice. The majority of the faculty have a cognitive or behavioral approach to assessment and treatment, and the program is geared primarily to students who wish to receive this type of training. There are also more limited opportunities for students whose interests are eclectic and who may supplement training in cognitive behavior therapy with courses and supervised experiences in other approaches (e.g. family systems). For students whose primary interests are in the practice of clinical psychology, the University also offers graduate training in clinical psychology leading to the Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) degree through the separate Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology (GSAPP).

    The Clinical Ph.D. program at Rutgers University has been an American Psychological Association accredited training program since 1965.     We are a member of the Academy of Psychological Clinical Science, a coalition of doctoral and internship training programs that share a common goal of producing and applying scientific knowledge to the assessment, understanding, and amelioration of human problems. Membership in the Academy is granted only after a thorough peer review process. The Rutgers Clinical Ph.D. program was recently accredited by the Psychological Clinical Science Accreditation System, as well. Our membership in the Academy and accreditation by the Psychological Clinical Science Accreditation System indicates that we are committed to excellence in scientific training, and to using clinical science as the foundation for design, implementing, and evaluating assessment and intervention procedures. We view clinical psychology as a specialty area within the discipline of psychology, and believe that research, scholarship, and clinical application should be firmly grounded in the core knowledge base of psychology as a science.

    The core clinical faculty are drawn from the Department of Psychology, the Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology. the Center of Alcohol Studies. and the adjacent Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. The breadth of faculty interests and expertise in research permits students to create a program of study tailored to their particular scholarly interests. Clinical faculty conduct research on cognitive and behavior therapies, health psychology, psychophysiology, applied behavior analysis, prevention, substance abuse, emotional intelligence, cognitive functioning, eating disorders, anxiety disorders, and autism. Students have the opportunity to work with child, adolescent, adult, and older adult populations in multiple research labs at Rutgers and affiliated institutions.

    The training approach relies heavily upon a mentorship model of training. Students are matched with a research mentor when they begin their graduate training program, and involve themselves in one or more research projects upon entering the program, initially as apprentices in ongoing projects, and subsequently as independent investigators. Students may study not only with clinical psychology faculty, but also with non-clinical researchers in the Psychology Department, and it is not uncommon for students to participate in more than one research group. Equally important is the goal of helping students to develop clinical skills. As in the research component of the program, our philosophy is that an apprenticeship model is most effective in teaching clinical skills. Students have available as role models a large number of faculty members who embody the clinical scientist concept. These faculty not only conduct research, but also are experienced clinical psychologists who are directly involved in clinical practice of various kinds. Students also have access to doctoral faculty in the Psy.D. program who focus primarily on clinical practice.

    Our graduates consistently score well on the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP) exam and the vast majority go on to attain licensure to practice psychology. Despite this, our program is primarily a research-focused program and is not a good match for students interested in careers focused primarily on clinical service delivery.     Master’s Degree in Psychology

    Students in these programs take core psychology classes and select a set of electives in a psychology specialty, such as family psychology, industrial-organizational psychology or clinical psychology. Students also develop their research skills, and a thesis generally is required. Most psychology master’s programs require 33 credits of work.

    The Department of Psychology at Florida International University has a faculty of distinguished psychologists known for the highest achievement in research, teaching, and active engagement in community settings.     The Department offers graduate training in these areas of specialization:

    The graduate programs combine classroom instruction and advanced seminar participation and emphasize student and faculty collaborative research. All programs of study provide intensive exposure to the theoretical and methodological foundations of psychology with a strong emphasis on quantitative skills.

    The Department offers programs of graduate study leading to the degrees of Master’s of Science and Doctor of Philosophy. Doctoral graduate study in the Department is full-time study. Our Doctoral students are financially supported with teaching assistantships, clinical assistantships, research assistantships, or university-level fellowships. Graduate students are actively engaged in publishing the results of their work in peer-reviewed journals and presenting these results at scientific conferences. The Department does not admit students for a terminal Master’s degree (with the exception of the Professional Mental Health Counseling program) and students who receive financial support are expected not to hold other employment during their graduate training.

    Graduates of our program are prepared for careers in both academic and applied settings including positions at universities and colleges, research and governmental organizations, business and industry, clinics and hospitals, and mental health settings.

    Positive Psychology: The Benefits of Living Positively

    Positive psychology often is passed off as pop psychology or New Age-y by those who haven’t actually looked into it.

    The actual theory behind positive psychology was defined in 1998 by Martin Seligman and Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi [1] and looks at all aspects of a person’s psychology. It does not discount traditional psychology, nor supersede it. Rather than viewing psychology purely as a treatment for the malign, however, it looks at the positive. Positive psychology is a recognized form of therapy and is offered by some counselors and psychologists.

    Psychology has always been interested in where people’s lives have gone wrong, and what has resulted because of it [2]. Illnesses such as depression are well-documented and patterns of depressive behavior well-known. However, until recently, what makes people happy and how they achieve inner happiness and well-being has been a mystery.

    Practitioners of positive psychology study people whose lives are positive and try to learn from them, in order to help others achieve this state of happiness [3]. It is a scientific study and not remotely hippie-ish, despite its connotations.

    Positive thinking is one aspect of positive psychology. Surrounding yourself with a great lifestyle and material goods may seem to lead to happiness, but how you really feel is governed by what goes on inside your head. When you go out of your way to think positively, you actually purge yourself of negative self-talk. [1]

    Negative self-talk is one of the biggest barriers to positive thinking. People become so accustomed to negative thinking that their conscious mind will pull them down, even when they have done nothing wrong. These people become insecure, overly apologetic and indecisive. Worse still, they open the door to numerous stress-related problems.

    Negative thinkers have four common mindsets:

    Many negative thinkers will pull the negatives out of a situation and focus on them. Sometimes these people will see only the negative in a situation, to the point where they deny any positive.

  • Personalizing.
    Some people make every tragedy about themselves. They will personalize every negative thing and assume that bad things happen because they are unlucky, or as a result of something they did or didn’t do. They will often construct negative situations with perfect logic, providing plausible reasons why negative things are either their fault or set out to hurt them.
  • Catastrophizing.
    This involves anticipating the worst. Some people even precipitate it. They can turn a slightly awkward interaction into an overreaction, making the situation worse. If something negative does happen, they will use it to validate their negative assumptions.
  • Polarizing.

    This type of negative thinker sees things as black or white. Either a situation is perfect or it is a catastrophe. This type of negative thinking can affect every area of a person’s life. Its effects can be both psychological and physical. By practicing positive thinking, you can actually stave off medical conditions and reap the benefits of having a positive outlook on life.

  • Depression is complicated illness with physical and mental health elements. It would be flippant to suggest that someone with a positive outlook will not encounter depressive feelings.

    However, positive psychology can be beneficial in treating depression. It can equip sufferers with the tools to stop downward spirals when they begin and help them to see the positive aspects to their lives. It can also help to stop the negative thinking habits that are common in depression. [4]

    Scientific studies also show that there is a direct link between stress and the immune system. When a person is experiencing a period of stress and negativity, his or her body is less able to mount an inflammatory response to attacks from bacteria and viruses. This results in an increase in infections such as the common cold and cold sores. [5] Having a positive outlook on life also equips people better for dealing with serious illness. Tackling diseases such as cancer with optimism and self-belief has shown to have a beneficial effect on recovery and ability to tolerate treatment.

    Among the other health benefits listed above, positive thinkers have a lower incidence of cardiovascular disease. They tend to have lower blood pressure than those who do not engage in positive thinking. The health benefits extend to the emotional side, too. optimists will have better physical and psychological well-being, and better skills for coping with stress and hardship.

    It is important to remember that simply having a positive mindset won’t actually stop bad things from happening. But it does give you the tools to better deal with bad situations. Sometimes your coping skills come down to nothing more than refusing to give in to your negative side and your fears. For some people, positive thinking comes quite naturally. For others, seeking professional help is necessary to get them on the right track.

    School Psychologist

    A school psychologist typically works with students at an elementary, middle or high school, although they he may be employed in other settings. He counsels students with emotional, social and behavioral issues and helps students learn the skills needed to focus on classroom studies and social skills development. A school psychologist also works with school administrators, teachers and parents on issues such as identifying and resolving problems that keep students from learning, creating a positive and encouraging classroom environment and promoting policies to reduce harassment.

    Counseling Education Program Mission Statement

    The Counselor Education Program at Eastern Washington University is committed to the selection, training, supervision, and professional success of counseling students, in keeping with the high standards established by the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). As a regional teaching university, EWU has a proud history of providing education to a high percentage of first generation college students, often from under-represented and lower socioeconomic communities, a tradition which the Counselor Education program maintains. Thus, counselor training occurs in a learning community that is intentionally focused on both skills development and personal growth of the counselor-in-training. In this way, Counselor Education fulfills its purpose of preparing competent and caring professional counselors to meet the needs of diverse urban and rural communities.

    Classes and experiences are organized to provide thorough instruction in the skills and knowledge generally recognized by the counseling profession to be effective with a K-12 population.     Number of Graduates

    Approximately 40 students were enrolled in the program with an estimated 75% graduation rate during the 2013-2014. Average completion rate is typically higher and ranges between 85% and 100%. The Program accepts a variable number of students each year, but is typically 24-30 with 50% in each emphasis – meaning 12 school counseling candidates. Eighty percent of accepted students graduate in the expected time period, two years for full-time students. Courses accommodate only full-time students. When a student graduates from this program, he or she is able to enter the workforce at the MA + 45 level at any school district in Washington.

    What will I study?

    Classes and experiences are organized to provide thorough grounding in the skills and knowledge generally recognized by the counseling profession. The program is accredited by CACREP and exceeds the Washington state requirement for ESA-School Counselor Certification.

    The Student Transfer Achievement Reform Act

    The Student Transfer Achievement Reform Act (SB 1440 Padilla) signed into legislation on September 29, 2010, enables the California Community Colleges and California State University to collaborate on the creation of Associate of Arts Degree (AA) program for transfer.

    California Community Colleges

    The Student Transfer Achievement Reform (STAR) Act requires California Community Colleges (CCC) to develop and to grant associate degrees for Transfer AA-T or AS-T, with the following stipulations:

    • Completion of 60 semester units or 90 quarter units of coursework that would be eligible for transfer to the California State University, including General Education:
      • IGETC or CSU GE Breadth
    • Completion of least 18 units of coursework in a major or area of emphasis as defined by the CCC
    • Earn a minimum grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.0 in all CSU-transferable coursework

    California State University

    A California Community College student who has earned the Associates in Arts degree for Transfer (AA-T) or the Associate in Science degree for Transfer (AS-T) will be granted priority admission to the CSU into a similar baccalaureate (BA) degree program with a guarantee of junior standing as long as the student meets all prescribed admission requirements. Once admitted, the student will only be required to complete 60 additional prescribed units to qualify for the similar baccalaureate degree.

    The Psychology Department offers two majors: The Psychology Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) major, and the Psychology Bachelor of Science (B.S.) major. Both degree options introduce students to the broad range of topics that psychologists study, while also allowing students to choose an individualized course of study and focus on some aspects of psychology in greater depth. Both options allow students to gain research experience working in one or more of our psychology labs.

    The Psychology B.A. major is particularly suited to students who wish to understand human behavior and mental functioning at the behavioral level.     The Psychology B.S. major is particularly suited to students who wish to explore the brain mechanisms of human and animal behavior and mental functioning. Students will take courses from the Psychology, Biology, and Chemistry Departments that are related to evolution, genetics, physiology, neurobiology, and the neural basis of higher cognitive and emotional processes in humans. Together these courses will provide students with a strong foundation in the neurobiological processes that underlie behavior, motivation, and cognition. Pre-med students who are interested in majoring in Psychology are advised to pursue the Psychology B.S major.

    Procrastination and trading – The Psychology Behind Great Trading Performance #psychology


    Procrastination and trading

    Don t overthink your losses. There is one correlation that seems to be a common trait with most successful traders: the less a trader thinks, the more profitable they are.

    What I found with struggling traders is that, when a trader is in a loss position they start arguing with themselves that they should get out, but that they don t want to take the loss for whatever reason, and their arguments get trapped inside their mind. Kind of like when you have to get up early in the morning and keep hitting the snooze button. But whilst you are hitting the snooze button you keep arguing with yourself that you should get up and then you fight for one more minute calculating in your head how much time it should take to get ready and if you run to the train that you should still make it.

    Not getting up early in the morning when the alarm clock goes off is procrastination.

    Not starting with the assignment in time is procrastination.

    Trying to avoid a drawdown when your system tells you is procrastination. Procrastination is what turns a drawdown into a loss.

    I found that when people / traders procrastinate they justify in their mind that they still have a choice in that matter, that the consequences of not taking action (i.e. not getting up in the morning at the time they set the alarm, not taking the loss at the price their system told them to, waiting with the assignment until the last week before it is due) are still more pleasurable than the perceived consequences of not taking the action.

    Procrastination ends the moment you feel you run out of choice. The moment that when you don t take action now, the painful consequences of not taking action weigh much more heavier than the pleasure of not taking action.

    That is the moment when you stop all the arguments in your head and you jump out of bed.

    That is the moment when you stop all the arguments in your head and only images of you failing the assignment pop up on your inner mind s eye and so you start focusing on the assignment day and night.

    That is the moment when you stop all the arguments in your head and you finally take that loss, when the pain of staying in the trade is greater than the pain of taking the loss.

    Master of Arts in Forensic Psychology

    The Master of Arts in Forensic Psychology is designed to train practitioners to provide psychology services to, and within, the criminal and civil justice systems as well as to prepare students for doctoral study in psychology. The 42-credit curriculum focuses on the understanding, evaluation and treatment of both offenders and victims. Through the curriculum, students are provided with an advanced understanding of psychological development and psychopathology, personality assessment, psychotherapeutic techniques and research methods.

    In the Forensic Psychology Program, students may take an externship consisting of a minimum of 300 hours in an appropriate psychological setting under the supervision of a licensed psychologist or other trained mental health professional approved by the program director. Alternatively, qualified students may complete a thesis.

    All new matriculants in the MA in Forensic Psychology Program are required to complete 42 credits. This includes 39 credits of coursework plus 3 credits for an externship of 300 hours or the prospectus/thesis.

    Permission from the program director and completion of PSY 791 is required for those who hope to complete their degree with a thesis. In addition, enrollment in PSY 791 will be open only to students who received an A or A- in PSY 715, PSY 737, PSY 738 and PSY 769. Students should take PSY 715 and PSY 769 in their first semester and the other two courses during their second semester. There is no qualifying exam for this degree.

    Enrollment in PSY 791 also requires an A or A– in the following four courses, except with permission of the Director of the MA Program: Research Design and Methods (PSY 715), Descriptive and Statistical Data Analysis in Psychology (PSY 737), Advanced Research Methods (PSY 738) and Intermediate Statistics in the Social Sciences (PSY 769).

    Students hoping to complete the Thesis Track should enroll in PSY 715 and PSY 769 in their first semester, and the two additional thesis preparation courses during their second semester.

    Externship Track (39 credits plus 3 credits of Fieldwork)

    Students who choose to complete their degree by the alternative to the thesis, the externship, must complete 39 credits of coursework as indicated, plus 3 credits of Fieldwork in Counseling (PSY 780).

    Externship/Thesis Combination (42 credits including 3-credit Thesis Prospectus ( PSY 791) and 3 credits of Fieldwork in Counseling (PSY 780))

    Students may opt to do both a thesis and fieldwork by taking PSY 780 and PSY 791. To do so, they must fulfill all the requirements for the thesis and take Fieldwork in Psychology. PSY 791 will count as a forensic psychology elective in that case.
