Taking off: Travel insurance revenue will rise as operators expand to niche markets

Industry Analysis & Industry Trends

Travel insurers faced steep revenue declines during the recession. Declining consumer disposable income meant fewer people were traveling and purchasing travel insurance. However, the industry returned to growth in 2010 as consumers became more sensitive to the potential losses associated with airline delays and cancellations, prompting them to buy travel insurance. The industry is expected to continue growing over the next five years and expand into niche markets catering to students and business travelers. purchase to read more

The Travel Insurance industry is in the mature stage of its life cycle, illustrated by continuous consolidation and widespread market acceptance of travel insurance. Industry value added (IVA), or contribution to the overall economy, is forecast to rise at an annualized rate of 1.2% over the 10 years to 2020. Similarly, US GDP is projected to grow at an average annual rate of 2.5% over the same period. This indicates that the industry is expanding roughly in line with the economy.

The number of industry operators is forecast to fall at an annualized rate of 1.6% over the five years to 2015. This follows a decade of consolidation, in which enterprise numbers declined even during years of revenue growth. purchase to read more

GUIDE FOR WRITING A
FUNDING PROPOSAL

This Guide for Writing a Funding Proposal was created to help empower people to be successful in gaining funds for projects that provide worthwhile social service. A major theme that runs throughout the Guide is a concern for the development of meaningful cooperative relationships – with funding agencies, with community organizations, and with the people you are serving – as a basis for the development of strong fundable initiatives. The Guide is built on the assumption that it is through collaboration and participation at all levels that long term change can be effected.

To make this Guide as useful as possible, all suggestions have been carefully reviewed with a concern that they be easy to implement and can have the greatest positive effect on the creation of a funding proposal. (This is the same design concern that I used for the creation of the companion guide for graduate students – Guide for Writing and Presenting Your Thesis or Dissertation ). Long orations are minimized and suggestions are presented in a direct and clear manner. Actual proposal examples are included so that you can easily see the different suggestions demonstrated.

As you are going through this Guide you will probably see things that aren’t clear, need fixing, or should be further clarified. Please send them along and I will do my best to improve the Guide based upon your ideas. I try to make major revisions in the Guide at least 2-3 times each year. Your suggestions on how to improve this Guide will be most appreciated

And finally, I receive many requests asking me to recommend a book or two that would be helpful in writing a good proposal. I’ve started to create such a listing of books I’ve identified and my review of each of them. Feel free to check out my selection of books to help with the preparation of a funding proposal .

Enjoy using this Guide and I hope it brings you good luck as you seek funding for your ideas!

I. Introduction

A. Opening Statements

The family is the basic unit of society. Families are composed of parents and their children who live in a community. In the case of the United States of America, there are myriad challenges to families that affect teenagers. The common problems that beset teenagers are drug abuse, alcohol abuse, sexual molestation and teenage pregnancy. Research findings state that in the year 2008, 35.6% of students had had six or more drinks of alcoholic beverages on at least one occasion (Dew, 2009, p. 1). In addition, 70% of eleventh grade students have had at least one drink of alcoholic beverages during their lifetime through the influence of friends and family members (Dew, 2009, p. 1). Hence, the problem of alcohol abuse has escalated through the years.

The problem on drug abuse has increased through the years since according to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, there were 9.5% of teenagers aged 12 to 17 who are currently drug users nowadays (Aldworth et. al. 2007, p. 45). These problems are results of the weakening of family values and ethical standards which make teenagers deviate from the norms. In other words, drug abuse, alcohol abuse, sexual molestation, commission of crimes and teenage pregnancy create challenges for families.

B. Thesis statement

The problems of teenagers involving drug abuse and alcohol abuse are primarily caused by stressful life events, peer influence, and failure of parents to take their children away from harmful activities. Besides, drug abuse and alcohol abuse might lead to sexual abuse or molestation and teenage pregnancy as well as the commission of violent crimes.

C. Importance of topic

The need to solve social problems like drug abuse and alcohol abuse makes it imperative to study the cases that lead teenagers to deviate the norms in society. The knowledge taken from the research paper is also useful in framing correct solutions for the problem.

Who has written about the subject (who has informed your paper):

Dinkmeyer (1990), McKay, De Guzman (1990) and Temke (2006) are authors that have written about the influence of parents on their children. Hobbs (2008) and Pasch (2003) are authors that have written about peer influence and peer pressure on teenagers. Regoli (2000), Wattenberg (2003), Henderson (2008) and Hendrickson (2001) are other authors that have informed this research paper.

D. Road Map

The cases that lead teenagers to drug and alcohol abuse include stressful events, peer influence, and failure of parents to keep their children away from harmful activities. This paper will discuss the reasons why teenagers become victims of drug and alcohol abuse which might cause sexual abuse or molestation against them, and teenage pregnancy despite the presence of their respective families and attendance in formal schools. After that, a discussion on the linkage of teenage drug and alcohol abuse with the commission of violent crimes will be given. It will also discuss the course of action for the treatment and intervention of teenagers who have fallen prey to drugs and excessive intake of alcoholic beverages as solution to the problem.

II. The Cases That Lead Teenagers to Drug Abuse and Alcohol Abuse

The primary cases that lead teenagers to drug abuse and alcohol abuse include stressful life events, peer influence, and failure of parents to take their children away from harmful activities.

A. Stressful Events

Stressful events in life cause trouble to teenager who attends school or not. Stressful life events may include divorce or separation of parents, low grades in school, and poverty. Divorce or separation of parents can affect the emotional, psychological, and physical well-being of a child. The primary concern of parents who are divorcing is the response of their children and their ability to handle the situation to become healthy and happy despite the problem (Temke, 2006, p. 1).

It must be remembered that the effects of divorce on children depends upon their age and gender. In this case, adolescents feel anger, depression, guilt, fear and loneliness due to divorce of their parents (Temke, 2006, p. 2). Other teenagers are forced to hold mature responsibilities like taking care of their siblings and or earning a living for the broken family. The pressure of choosing one parent over the other is also stressful for a teenager.

Teenagers are irreparably damaged due to divorce of their parents. The situation makes teenagers think that they are too powerless to handle such family change. Family relationships are affected by the decision of parents to opt for divorce instead of saving the marriage which makes children feel guilty and depressed. Drug and alcohol abuse is often the means of coping for teenagers to ease the pain of having a broken family.

Moreover, the most common effect of divorcing parents is the inability of teenagers to cope with the changes in their family (Temke, 2006, p. 2). As a result, teenagers react negatively on the situation by resorting to drugs or alcoholic beverages. Hence, parents who are divorcing must help their children to adjust to the situation through proper communication and unconditional love and care. Divorcing parents must not neglect their children despite existing change in family setting. When their children grow up and become teenagers, the social stigma of living with a broken family will haunt them and make them walk astray.

Another stressful event in the life of a teenager is having low grades in school. Although this problem is related to lack of confidence, parents must not take it for granted. Studies mentioned that working memory deficits of a teenager may trigger some learning difficulties and behavioral troubles linked to impulsivity, difficulties in focus, and hyperactivity (“Working memory, psychiatric symptoms, and academic performance at school”). Depression may also cause low performance of teenagers in school. It is also considered the gateway of resorting to drugs and alcohol abuse.

Teenagers who got low grades in school can resort to drug abuse and alcohol abuse in order to ease their pain due to low morale and lack of self-confidence. Drug use is viewed as deriving from failing to make good in school activities and assignments (Regoli Hewitt, 2000, p. 268). In short, some teenagers who are unable to gain success in academic matters may choose deviant modes of adaptation to deal with their failure.

In addition, poverty may also cause stress to teenagers. Logically, inability of parents to provide enough resources for the physical and financial needs of a teenager is unacceptable but existing today. Some teenagers are forced to be exposed to environmental toxins and family violence, suffer instability of residence, and fewer learning experiences due to poverty (Gunn Duncan, 1997, p. 2). Others are forced to work while studying just to make both ends meet. Due to lack of proper education, teenagers who belong to poor families experience difficulty in making themselves financially stable. As a result, some teenagers are involved in illegal activities like drug pushing which makes them mingle with people who are considered bad influence for them (Gunn Duncan, 1997, p. 2). If teenagers are exposed to illegal activities, resorting to alcohol abuse and drug abuse cannot be avoided. Therefore, stressful events like poverty, divorce, and lack of proper education must be abated or lessened in order to prevent teenagers from resorting to drug abuse and alcohol abuse.

Extended Auto Warranty – Vehicle Service Contract Info Center #extended #auto

#

Vehicle Service Contract Information Center

Welcome to ExtendedAutoWarranty.com, home of the Internet’s largest library of resources on extended auto warranties. We are an independent team of researchers, reviewers, and auto protection experts. We provide unbiased and honest information that we publish ourselves as well as material found on the Internet that has been deemed relevant and reputable.

It is our mission to provide consumers with the advice they need without the hassle of finding it.

Because so many “review sites” and “information resources” provide opinions that have been influenced by the company under review, it is difficult to find a straight answer to your questions. We scour the Internet, call every company, and compile then share our research outcome with you. At ExtendedAutoWarranty.com, you get all the advice you need and none of the bias that you don’t.

We were like you once: Owning a car with repairs that we could barely afford, constantly searching for a better way to deal with costly repair bills. But one thing we found extremely difficult was getting information that was not only truthful but unbiased. We found dozens of websites claiming to provide information on the extended warranty industry that contained less-than-credible resources. As a result, we brought this website to life. And by doing so, we became the #1 Consumer Extended Vehicle Protection website on the Internet.

Extended Auto Warranty Companies Reviewed

Finding the best plan at the right price is not easy so you’ll have to take time to shop around. Of course you have to first decide if you actually need the warranty. This will depend on personal preferences and how much of the future risks you are willing to take care of. While most cars will require numerous repairs for as long as you own them, some will need no more than routine maintenance. Then there are those that will require unexpected but very expensive repairs. Just like when purchasing a vehicle, the best way is to compare different options on the internet. Fortunately, there are independent companies that review and rate extended auto warranty providers for clients.

Extended auto coverage is available for new as well as used cars. Since new cars come with a factory warranty, the need for extended coverage largely depends on how long you intend to keep the vehicle. For example, most factory plans usually last three years or up to 36,000 miles. Now if you intend to keep the car for two or three years, purchasing an extended warranty may make little sense. However, if you plan on keeping the car for a long time after the factory warranty expires then it’s a good idea to extend your protection. If buying a used car, there is a high probability that the factory coverage plan will not be transferable or will have expired so you’ll need extra protection.

It’s always good to know what is covered, and what’s not covered by the Vehicle Service Contract you intend to buy. Does it cover wear and tear? What about breakdown? Under breakdown, some warranties cover only the parts that break. But you know well that not all parts fail due to breakdown so such a policy will be less inclusive than is desirable. Some policies extend coverage to parts that wear out with time under the “wear and tear” subtitle. Again, not all extended policies have this feature. Some contracts do not cover ABS brakes and most of them don’t cover overheating. Transmission, engine, seals and gaskets, drive axle assembly and turbocharger/superchargers will usually be covered, though it is better to fully explore specific options before committing to a plan.

Some companies require that you pay the repair and submit a receipt to the warranty provider for reimbursement. While this is not a bad idea, you may sometimes have to wait for weeks or even months before you get your money back. Then there are those that pay the repair shop directly and almost immediately. For purposes of convenience, never purchase warranties that don’t pay the shop directly.

Research mindedness: Research in social care and social work #social #work

#

This resource remains available under SCIE’s commitment to share knowledge and information but please be alert to changes in policy or practice since publication. This resource was last updated in November 2012.

Research mindedness

Research in social work and social care

This section of the Research Mindedness resource explores some of the areas that are tied strongly to social care research. It looks at:

In What do we mean by research? we said that the use of research in social work is interdisciplinary – that is, it uses research and research skills which arise from other disciplines such as sociology, anthropology and psychology. However, this does not mean that social work research lacks distinction or focus. In a paper entitled ‘Is social work research distinctive?’, Shaw (2007) uses a definition from the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) to demonstrate that several of the criteria which define social work research – ethical awareness, a reflexive consideration of the place of the researcher in the research, and a sensitivity to the political and social context – can be applied to other social research. What sets social work research apart is its positioning as emancipatory. This can be described as:

  • being prepared to challenge inequality and oppression in all aspects of the research process
  • understanding that the voices of service users and participants from all fields must be included appropriately.

Writing in the context of disability research, Colin Barnes (2003: 6) defines social work research as being ‘about the empowerment of disabled people through the transformation of the material and social relations of research production’.

‘As part of this emancipatory stance’, it is important that those who use services are involved in research about them. For instance, the guide to systematic reviews produced by the Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE) is clear that the service user’s voice must be included, preferably at all stages of the research (Rutter et al. 2010). Organisations such as INVOLVE help to promote and facilitate public participation in health and social care research. An excellent publication here is INVOLVE (2010) ‘Turning the pyramid upside down: examples of public involvement in social care research’ McLaughlin (2012: 136, citing Mayer and Timms 1970) writes that: ‘Social work has a proud tradition of seeking service user views that goes back to the seminal The Client Speaks’.

This connection to the value base of social work practice was found again in a report published by SCIE in 2007. The authors analysed a sample of social work papers submitted by universities in England, Scotland and Wales to the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise (The RAE was a way in which the quality of research from British universities was measured using ‘peer review’ by a panel of senior academics and others from the research community. This determined further funding for each institution. The RAE has now been replaced by the Research Excellence Framework (the REF), the first of which takes place in 2014). They concluded that the ‘distinctive characteristics of social work research’ were its ‘strong profile of democratised, participatory and user-led research’ (Shaw and Norton 2007:

They found that social work research had a set of purposes related to social work practice and values. While the contexts in which it took place were sometimes shared with other disciplines, its purposeful focus was a distinguishing feature.

Social work research also encompasses theory and practice in social care. It is generally agreed that social work as a profession has retained a disciplinary research focus (Bywaters 2008), but that social work is in itself embedded in the larger field of social care.

Save 30% on Your Airline Ticket by Picking the Right Days to Buy and Fly

Summary

  • For domestic and international trips, the cheapest day to depart is Wednesday and the worst day is Sunday. You can save about $40 on domestic trips and $60 on international trips by leaving on the cheapest day as opposed to the most expensive day.
  • The best day to return from a domestic trip is Tuesdays with savings of about $45.
  • The best day to return from an international trip is Wednesday with savings of about $60.
  • Friday is the most expensive return day for both domestic and international trips.
  • Thursday is the cheapest day to buy domestic and international tickets.  Saturday is the worst day to buy domestic tickets and Sunday is the worst day to buy International tickets. However savings are only about $10 between the best and worst shopping days for typical domestic routes, and $25 for international markets.
  • For any tip that is true in aggregate it is possible to find a market that is the exception, but you can monitor your markets of interest using Hopper’s tools .

Table 1: Summary of best and worst days to buy, depart, and return

Departure Day

To find the cheapest day to fly, Hopper looked at about 11 thousand markets from US origins – 7,500 domestic and 3,500 international – that had a popularity of at least 20 searches per day since January 1, 2013.  If we average all domestic destinations together, Tuesday is the cheapest departure day, with Sunday the most expensive.  Interestingly, Sunday is the least popular day to travel, with Tuesday a close second.  Using the same averaging methodology, the best day to travel for international flights is actually Saturday (Figure 1), which is also one of the most popular days to travel.

However, pricing and search behavior varies widely between markets, so averaging can be misleading.  For comparison, we counted how many markets saw their lowest prices on each day of the week, and the answers were different.  For both domestic and international travel, more markets have their lowest prices on Wednesdays (Figure 2) and their most expensive prices on Sunday.  Savings for leaving on the best day compared to the most expensive day range from $40 to $50 for domestic markets and $40 to $60 for international markets.

Figure 1:  Popularity and average price savings (vs. most expensive departure day) for domestic and international markets

Figure 2:  Number of markets with the lowest departure price on each day of week, and average price savings (vs. most expensive departure day) for domestic and international markets

Return Day

On average, Tuesday is the cheapest day to return from domestic travel and Monday is the best day to return from international travel (Figure 3).  However, as was the case for the best departure day, the cheapest days are different when the analysis counts the number of markets by cheapest return day instead of looking at the average.  For both domestic and international destinations, the majority of markets had their cheapest price on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday, with Tuesday being best for domestic and Wednesday for international markets (Figure 4).   The most expensive day to return is Friday.  When returning on the best day, potential savings are between $40 and $60 for both domestic and international trips, as compared to booking on the worst day.

Figure 3: Popularity and average price savings (vs. most expensive return day) for domestic and international markets

Figure 4: Number of markets with the lowest departure price on each day of week, and average price savings (vs. most expensive return day) for domestic and international markets

Booking Day

One of the tips that shows up often is to shop for flights on a Tuesday (1) after airlines change their pricing.  Looking at average pricing we found that for domestic flights the cheapest tickets actually show up on Thursday, and for international flights Saturday and Sunday are the cheapest to book on (Figure 5).  When counting the number of markets that see the lowest booking price for each week day, Hopper found that Thursday is the cheapest day to book for the majority of domestic and international markets (Figure 6) and the weekends are when tickets are the most expensive.  However, while the difference in pricing from day to day can be significant in select markets, on average the savings are only about $10 for domestic markets and $30 for international markets.

Figure 5: Popularity and average price savings (vs. most expensive booking day) for domestic and international markets

Figure 6:  Number of markets with the lowest departure price on each day of week, and average price savings (vs. most expensive booking day) for domestic and international markets

For any tip that is true in aggregate it is possible to find a market that is the exception, but you can monitor your markets of interest using Hopper’s tools .

Data and Methodology

The data presented in this analysis comes from Hopper’s combined feed of Global Distribution Service (GDS) data sources which includes about 10 million queries and 1 billion trips per day.  Demand is represented as the number of queries not actual ticket purchases, and is calibrated across all GDS sources for each market.  Deal fares are represented by the 10th percentile prices.  For example if the 10th percentile price is $800 dollars it means that only 10% of trips are priced at or below this price.

For this analysis, we looked at about 11 thousand markets worldwide, 7,500 domestic and 3,500 international, that had a popularity of at least 1,000 searches per week since January 1, 2013.  We used two methodologies to find cheapest days to depart, return, and purchase.  First we averaged flight prices to find cheapest days, and second we counted the number with cheapest days for each day of the week.

Jury awards $5M to man wrongfully accused of indecent contact

A jury awarded $5 million to a man who was wrongfully arrested for indecent contact with a minor over the internet. In 2011, a man was arrested in front of his home. He was accused of performing sex acts on himself while using a Facebook account to contact a 12-year-old Sacramento girl and asking her to undress in front of a webcam. The accused man was ultimately found to have not committed the crimes, to have never been on Facebook, and to have never had a Facebook account on his computer. The plaintiff claimed Detective Heather Hendrickson was reckless in her preparation of the arrest and search warrant affidavits, causing her to mislead the magistrate that issued the warrants. Defense claimed Hendrickson was not reckless in her conduct.

Jury finds passenger was unbelted at time of crash

A jury found a driver and the manufacturers of a seat belt were not to blame for a passenger’s head injury and paralysis. In 2012, Terry Herbert, then 58, was a passenger in a Ford Fusion driven by Sylvia Caceres when it was involved in a rollover crash. Herbert suffered a traumatic brain injury and was rendered a paraplegic when she was ejected from the car. Herbert claimed that Caceres failed to maintain proper control of the car and that the seat belt’s buckle was defectively designed, causing it to unlatch during the crash. Caceres claimed another vehicle caused her to take evasive action, and Ford Motor Co. and the manufacturers of the Takata AB buckle claimed Herbert was not wearing her seat belt at the time of the crash.

Driver found not to blame for pedestrian’s alleged injuries

A jury found the driver of a reversing vehicle in a parking lot was not to blame for a pedestrian’s alleged injuries. On Feb. 7, 2013, Peter Ly, then 35, was in a parking lot inspecting damage on a vehicle when his right shoulder was allegedly struck. He claimed the vehicle he was inspecting was struck by Paul Fleming’s vehicle as it was backing into a parking spot. Ly claimed his shoulder was subsequently struck, resulting in a superior labral tear. Fleming claimed that he back into the spot at idle speed and bumped the parked vehicle, but that he didn’t see Ly until he returned with the property owner. Defense counsel argued that Fleming acted reasonably and that Ly was not behind the vehicle at the time of the accident. Defense also claimed Ly was not injured.
