Travel Safety Tips

For some pet parents, a trip is no fun if the four-legged members of the family can’t come along. But traveling can be highly stressful, both for you and your pets. If you’re planning to take a trip with pets in tow, we have some tips to help ensure a safe and comfortable journey for everyone.

Remember, no matter where you’re headed or how you plan to get there, make sure your pet is microchipped for identification and wears a collar and tag imprinted with your name, phone number and any relevant contact information. It’s a good idea for your pet’s collar to also include a temporary travel tag with your cell phone and destination phone number for the duration of your trip.

Traveling by plane?

Unless your furry friend is small enough to ride under your seat, it’s best to avoid air travel with your pets. If you must bring your pet along on the flight, here are a few suggestions to keep your pet safe while flying the friendly skies.

  • Book a direct flight whenever possible. This will decrease the chances that your pet is left on the tarmac during extreme weather conditions or mishandled by baggage personnel during a layover.
  • Make an appointment with your pet’s veterinarian for a checkup. Prior to your trip, make sure your pet’s vaccinations are up-to-date and obtain a health certificate from your veterinarian dated within 10 days of your departure. Tranquilizing your pet is generally not recommended as it could hamper his or her breathing, so use this time to check with your veterinarian for ways to relax your pet if you suspect he or she may become afraid, anxious or uncomfortable mid-flight. For travel outside of the continental United States, additional planning and health care requirements may be necessary. Contact the foreign office of the country you are traveling to for more information.
  • Purchase a USDA-approved shipping crate. The crate should be large enough for your pet to stand, sit and turn around in comfortably, and lined with some type of bedding—shredded paper or towels—to absorb accidents. Prior to your trip, tape a small pouch of dried food outside the crate so airline personnel will be able to feed your pet in case he or she gets hungry during a layover. The night before you leave, freeze a small dish or tray of water for your pet. This way, it can’t spill during loading and will melt by the time he or she is thirsty. Make sure the crate door is securely closed, but not locked, so that airline personnel can open it in case of an emergency.
  • Make sure your pet’s crate has proper identification. Mark the crate with the words “Live Animal,” as well as with your name, cell phone and destination phone number, and a photo of your pet. Should your pet escape from the carrier, this could be a lifesaver. You should also carry a photograph of your pet.
  • Tell every airline employee you encounter—on the ground and in the air—that you are traveling with a pet in the cargo hold. This way, they’ll be ready if any additional considerations or attention is needed. If the plane is delayed, or if you have any concerns about the welfare of your pet, insist that airline personnel check the animal whenever feasible. In certain situations, removing the animal from the cargo hold and deplaning may be warranted.

Taking a Road Trip?

Traveling with a pet by car involves more than just loading the animal in the back seat and motoring off, especially if you will be driving long distances or plan to be away for a long time. Here are a few car travel safety tips to help you prepare for a smooth and safe trip.

  • Prep your pet for a long trip. Get your pet geared up by taking him on a series of short drives first, gradually lengthening time spent in the car. If you’re traveling across state lines, bring along your pet’s rabies vaccination record. While this generally isn’t a problem, some states require this proof at certain interstate crossings.
  • Keep your pets safe and secure in a well-ventilated crate or carrier. The crate should be large enough for your pet to stand, sit, lie down and turn around in. Secure your pet’s crate so it will not slide or shift in the event of an abrupt stop. If you decide to forgo the crate, don’t allow your pet to ride with his head outside the window, and always keep him in the back seat in a harness attached to a seat buckle.
  • Prep a pet-friendly travel kit. Bring food, a bowl, leash, a waste scoop, plastic bags, grooming supplies, medication and first-aid, and any travel documents. Pack a favorite toy or pillow to give your pet a sense of familiarity. Be sure to pack plenty of water, and avoid feeding your pet in a moving vehicle. Your pet’s travel-feeding schedule should start with a light meal three to four hours prior to departure, and always opt for bottled water. Drinking water from an area he or she isn’t used to could result in stomach discomfort.
  • Never leave your animal alone in a parked vehicle. On a hot day, even with the windows open, a parked automobile can become a furnace in no time, and heatstroke can develop. In cold weather, a car can act as a refrigerator, holding in the cold and causing the animal to freeze to death.

8 Epic EHR implementations with the biggest price tags in 2015

8 Epic EHR implementations with the biggest price tags in 2015

Investments in EHR systems are undoubtedly costly, but some implementations appear to carry more costs than others.

Implementation costs vary system to system and hospital to hospital. Prices fluctuate based on what types of additional features and modules a hospital selects. And, according to a Politico report, some EHR vendors charge for additional service fees while others don’t. The Politico report indicates for Epic’s 2014 edition software, the Verona, Wis.-based EHR vendor charges a software licensing fee, implementation costs and annual maintenance costs while OpenVistA, developed by Carlsbad, Calif.-based Medsphere, for example, does not.

Even within the subsector of Epic implementations, costs fall across the board. For example, Duke University Health System, based in Durham, N.C. paid approximately $700 million for its Epic EHR (systemwide go-live in 2014) while Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H. paid $80 million (go-live in 2011), according to a Forbes report.

John Halamka, MD, CIO of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. said in the Politico report that hospitals selecting Epic’s platform are not just buying a product — they are buying a process. BIDMC does not operate on Epic’s EHR; rather, the hospital earlier this year forged a partnership with athenahealth, which included using the Watertown, Mass.-based vendor’s product.

“Epic is selling a methodology; often a lot of manual processes or heterogeneity and standardizing the work,” Dr. Halamka told Politico. “It’s not that they’re buying expensive software, they’re buying a lot of software.”

No matter where the prices come from, the cost of Epic installations are significant. Here are eight of the most costly Epic implementations reported within the past six months. These are working numbers, with some systems having allotted the indicated amounts to implementation projects and others that have already completed installations.

Partners HealthCare: $1.2 billion
Boston-based Partners HealthCare is one of more recent implementations, going live the first week of June to the tune of $1.2 billion. This is the health system’s biggest investment to date. The implementation process took approximately three years, and in that time, the initial price tag of $600 million doubled.

LehighValleyHealth Network: $200 million
LVHN started its switch to Epic’s platform in February 2015, but the full transition will take between four and six years. Harry Lukens, CIO of the Allentown, Pa.-based system, told The Morning Call the total investment dedicated to the installation includes software, hardware, data conversion and additional personnel.

Mayo Clinic: “Hundreds of millions”
In January 2015, Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic announced it selected Epic’s EHR and revenue cycle management platforms and planned to drop its Cerner and GE Healthcare contracts to do so. The value of the contract was not disclosed by the health system or the vendor, but stock analysts told The Kansas City Star it is worth “hundreds of millions of dollars over several years.” Additionally, the headline of the Star report reads “Cerner loses Mayo Clinic contract worth hundreds of millions of dollars to Epic,” indicating a ballpark estimate of the new contract’s value.

LaheyHospital Medical Center: $160 million
On March 28, 2015, the Burlington, Mass.-based hospital completed its two-year implementation of Epic’s EHR system. Two months later, Lahey Health said it was laying off 130 people at three hospitals to close the budget gap. In the six months ended March 31, the health system had lost $21 million, partly due to preparatory EHR implementation costs.

Lifespan: $100 million
Providence, R.I.-based Lifespan announced plans to implement Epic’s EHR in March 2013, and the health system went live April 2015. Lifespan initially projected the implementation to cost $90 million, but in a Rhode Island Public Radio report, John Murphy, MD, executive vice president of physician services, alluded to a total closer to $100 million.

Erlanger Health System: $97 million
Chattanooga, Tenn.-based Erlanger Health System signed a contract with Epic in May 2015 nearing $100 million. The health system will invest $91 million in capital expenses, but operating expenses will bring the total to $97 million over the next 10 years. Erlanger was deciding between Epic and Cerner’s platform and ultimately chose Epic because the bid was less expensive, CFO Britt Tabor told Times Free Press .

WheatonFranciscan Healthcare: $54 million
In January 2015, Glendale, Wis.-based Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare announced plans to implement Epic across its hospitals. The system’s affiliated medical group and physician offices have been using Epic’s EHR since September 2012, but providers across the system can only view patient records and not input information. The implementation will create one central EHR platform across the system. Go-lives will begin January 2016. The system expects a return on investment after four years of using the platform.

Saint Francis Medical Center: $43 million
The hospital in Cape Girardeau, Mo. contracted with Epic in February 2015 and expects to go live in July 2016. Saint Francis plans to connect and exchange records with other hospitals in the St. Louis area also using Epic’s system, including SSM Health and Mercy Health.

Worth noting
A handful of other hospitals and health systems reported signing contracts with Epic this year but did not disclose the costs of the IT projects. Some of these organizations include Arlington Heights, Ill.-based Northwest Community Healthcare, SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital-Audrain in Mexico, Mo. Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences in Tulsa, San Diego-based Scripps Health and St. Louis-based BJC HealthCare.

Editor’s note: An earlier version of this article identified Saint Francis Medical Center as being located in Dexter, Mo. We have updated the article to include the correct location, and we apologize for the error.

Internet Filtering Software Guide – Reviews of Parental Control Software #online

    #

Internet Filter and Parental Control Software Reviews

    BUILT-IN PARENTAL CONTROLS FROM ISP

Note: The information in the following section may no longer be applicable, as now most people receive their Internet service through a telecom company like Verizon or a cable company like Comcast. Since this site is not being as actively updated, we have not been able to research what parental control features these services offer.

Most major ISP’s (Internet Service Provider) like America Online, MSN or Earthlink, provide parental controls that allow you to adjust the nature of content available to each screen name. This means each family member can have customized access to the Internet based on age at no additional charge. The following are links that explain how to use parental controls with EARTHLINK . AMERICA ONLINE and MSN .

    PRE-FILTERED ISP’S

A more aggressive option for filtering is a filtered or a “family-friendly” ISP. With a filtered ISP, content filtering is not an option you select and set up; it is built-in and automatic for all users. It cannot be bypassed or overridden. Here are links to some “family-friendly” ISP’s.

For more information on ISP-based filtering, click here . For a sampling of more filtering ISPs, click here . For families using an ISP without the parental control feature, filtering software is recommended (see below).

CLIENT INTERNET FILTERING AND PARENTAL CONTROL SOFTWARE REVIEW

(Purchased and installed on your computer[s])

Here is a chart of some of the leading software products available. The ratings have been calculated based on several comparative reviews. For explanation of features, hover your mouse over the term you wish to have defined.

    * BrowseControl provides discounts when purchased in bulk, like for a computer lab.

There are many commercially available products. Some filtering products, like Symantec and McAfee, are part of a package of software tools that also include virus protection, popup blockers, and other security features. The advantage: with one purchase, you can take care of several important concerns. The catch: these products typically cost more than a stand-alone internet filtering product and have annual subscriptions. The following links below provide additional information about commercially available internet filters.

    INTERNET FILTERING ROUTER REVIEWS

For advanced users, commercial filtering may work for you if you meet these three conditions:

    1) Your household has more than one computer
    2) They are or will be networked (“talking” to each other)
    3) You have a fast Internet connection (not dial-up)

The option is router-based filtering. A router is a piece of equipment that connects your computers to the Internet and to each other. Some come with options to filter content which means the filtering you set up will be applied to all computers in your network. Router-based filtering can be more complex to set up, but is also more difficult to bypass. There is an initial purchase cost, plus an annual subscription fee. Several reasonably-priced examples are shown below.

The first three in this list are fairly new options and block a loophole that some other routers do not handle.

    Kibosh. $99 + $59.99/yr filtering service

Blocksi Router. $59.95 per 2 years’ subscription

Occupational Safety Degrees by Degree Level

    Essential Information

Bachelor’s-level students might participate in internships for hands-on experience. A master’s degree program in occupational safety provides advanced education for experienced professionals who want to increase their knowledge of safety engineering, fire protection and toxicology. Students learn management and technical skills, such as how to operate machinery to test its usability and how to prevent workplace fires.

With safety protocols in place for practically every industry, occupational safety specialists need to be qualified and trained to visit sites to find code violations, understand chemicals, analyze accidents and know how to handle situations involving hazardous materials.

A high school diploma or equivalent is required for bachelor’s programs, while bachelor’s degrees are typically required for master’s and/or advanced programs. These programs last four years for a bachelor’s degree and two additional years for a master’s degree.

Bachelor of Science in Occupational Safety

A bachelor’s degree program in occupational safety prepares students for real-world experiences that require them to anticipate, solve and monitor conditions that are unfit or illegal for workers. Students are exposed to a range of topics, including how to use protective equipment. Often, students are required to complete an internship in occupational health and safety and learn about workers’ compensation. Typical courses include:

    • Accident prevention
    • Safety engineering
    • Environmental issues
    • Safety, health and the law
    • Employment relations
    • Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards

    Master’s in Occupational Safety

While undergraduate degree programs serve as introductions to the field of occupational safety and health, the master’s degree program focuses on preventing and solving safety and health dangers. Students in the graduate degree program are often already experienced in the field and enroll in the program to advance in their career opportunities and strengthen their leadership skills.

Once in the field, graduates may train workers and employers, implement new safety and health practices for violators, perform on-site inspections and design emergency response plans. The master’s degree in occupational safety curriculum concentrates on the techniques to make decisions, how to reduce workplace violations, conduct audits and promote workplace safety. Students develop the skills needed to be a leader in the occupational safety industry through classroom assignments and case studies on topics like:

    • Advanced toxicology
    • Research methods
    • Accident prevention
    • Safety engineering
    • Occupational ergonomics
    • Fire protection

    Popular Career Options

Individuals with a bachelor’s degree in occupational health and safety have the knowledge to work in a variety of fields, from insurance to business, or for federal, state or local government. Popular careers include:

    • Loss prevention specialist
    • Environmental protection officer
    • Occupational health and safety inspector
    • Ergonomist
    • Industrial hygienist

    Employment Outlook and Salary Info

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), a projected 4% increase in employment of occupational health and safety specialists was expected from 2014-2024; the majority of these jobs were anticipated to be for loss prevention professionals (www.bls.gov ).

The same source reported that in May 2015, there were 70,300 occupational safety and health specialists working in the United States. The median salary for these professionals was $33.75 per hour, or $70,210 annually.

    Continuing Education

Individuals seeking further education can complete a doctorate in occupational health and safety, although these degrees aren’t incredibly common. With a bachelor’s degree in occupational safety, graduates may apply for an optional professional certification. The Board of Certified Safety Professionals offers a Certified Safety Professional designation, which tests knowledge of the safety standards via a computer-based examination (www.bcsp.com ). Recertification requirements need to be met every five years.

Students interested in occupational safety can find relevant degree programs offered at most academic levels. These programs delve into a multitude of workplace safety considerations, preparing students for careers in loss prevention, safety inspecting, environmental protection, and more, depending on one’s interests and goals.

Safety and Security – Embassy of the United States Kathmandu, Nepal

    #nepal travel
    #

    U.S. Citizen Services

    Safety and Security

The U.S. Embassy in Nepal offers the following information to U.S. citizens considering traveling to Nepal with the hope that it will assist you in preparing for your trip and, as a result, you will enjoy your time in Nepal.

Travel Alerts and Warnings for Nepal

The State Department issues Travel Alerts for short-term events we think you should know about when planning travel to a country. Examples of reasons for issuing a Travel Alert might include an election season that is bound to have many strikes, demonstrations, disturbances; a health alert like an outbreak of H1N1; or evidence of an elevated risk of terrorist attacks. When these short-term events are over, we cancel the Travel Alert.

We issue Travel Warnings when we want you to consider very carefully whether you should go to a country at all. Examples of reasons for issuing a Travel Warning might include unstable government, civil war, or ongoing intense crime or violence, or frequent terrorist attacks. We want you to know the risks of traveling to these places and to strongly consider not going to them at all. Travel Warnings remain in place until the situation changes; some have been in effect for years.

“Messages for U.S. Citizens” are important notices about safety or travel information from the U.S. Embassy to U.S. citizens living in Nepal. Wardens are private U.S. citizens in Nepal who help the Embassy communicate warden messages quickly when needed. Contact the Consular Office if you are interested in volunteering your services as a Warden. We greatly appreciate the support from our Wardens, and it is a very important role to play!

Nepal is a country of spectacular beauty and is recognized as a top trekking destination in the world. However, travelers to Nepal should also keep in mind the dangers associated with their treks. Landslides, altitude sickness, and occasional thefts or extortion do happen. Every year, the Embassy also helps facilitate helicopter rescues of Americans in need. Always remember to register with the Embassy to help speed along emergency assistance.

The Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) is a free service provided by the U.S. Government to U.S. citizens who are traveling to, or living in, a foreign country. STEP allows you to enter information about your upcoming trip abroad so that the Department of State can better assist you in an emergency. STEP also allows Americans residing abroad to get routine information from the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.

The Department of State has issued this Worldwide Caution to update information on the continuing threat of terrorist actions and violence against U.S. citizens and interests throughout the world. U.S. citizens are reminded to maintain a high level of vigilance and to take appropriate steps to increase their security awareness. This replaces the Worldwide Caution dated August 12, 2010, to provide updated information on security threats and terrorist activities worldwide.

Global ATS has brought together a team of experienced Airport and ATM aviation Safety Management specialists who have been using and teaching ATM over many years. The team has collectively embraced the developments and lessons learned as Air Traffic Management systems have been implemented throughout the aviation industry.

An airport operator should ensure that all operational personnel are trained and competent to operate in those safety-critical areas. There are many activities that are performed on the airside area of an airport and an understanding of these is essential for a safe and efficient conduct of aircraft and vehicle movements.

Safety is the most important factor in any aviation operational discipline and it is essential that everyone involved has a clear understanding of how safety can be managed within their area of responsibility.

Global Aviation Training Services (GATS) is a United Kingdom based company providing a wide range of aviation training services and custom-built solutions in the field of Air Traffic Management. The company operates in a fast-moving and exciting industry sector providing its services to customers from over 35 countries, many of which are fast-growing emerging markets.

Global ATS offers many services which can be provided either in-country or at its Gloucestershire Airport facility, a UK CAA and ICAO ATC training college in western England.

Global ATS is a unique company. It is the only private sector (non-state owned) provider of air traffic training solutions – not only in the UK, but perhaps globally. GATS was built on the legacy and solid foundations of the highly respected Bailbrook Aviation College, which itself was a successor to the IAL Aviation College in Hayes, England established in the early 1960’s. This rich lineage has contributed in no small way in making GATS a world-leading centre for aviation training excellence.

Global ATS provides solutions to high-growth, opportunity-rich aviation markets. The growth of air traffic in emerging markets will drive demand for aviation training and services over the next 20 years, with a global shortfall of skilled industry manpower increasing this demand. The growth of air traffic in emerging markets such as the Middle East, the Gulf Cooperation Council states, Indian sub-continent, Africa, South East Asia, China, CIS countries in Central Asia and Latin America will drive demand for aviation training, education and services in the next 20 years.

A key asset is our CAA-approved ATC training centre at Gloucestershire Airport. Here we deliver our ATC training business, with consistently high quality and results.

An immersive ‘hands-on training environment’ gives students realistic work simulations, with a memorable experience of college life beyond the curriculum.

Aviation training is stringently regulated. Our clients expect us to ensure internal control processes; policies and procedures are in place for all staff. Our Quality Management System (QMS) contains all necessary controls to operate our business with full compliance.

We have established a network of Associates with over 150 years’ combined experience across all areas of Air Traffic Management. Our associates are available on an ad hoc basis to support a range of projects across specialist industry areas, including air navigation services, CNS engineering and maintenance training / solutions, aviation consultancy, 2D 3D simulation development, safety and quality management system implementation and more.

    Recent News

Building on previous Air Traffic Control (ATC) training delivery for the Irish Air Corps (IAC), GATS was delighted to accept its latest intake of students who will be completing their Basic Training Course, scheduled to finish in June 2017.

Working towards a career as an ATCO you will spend 4 years immersing yourself in and learning the ATC industry as a Pseudo Pilot before undertaking a Basic Training Course Aerodrome Control Instrument Course. After 4 years’ service and course completion you will leave Global ATS as a highly skilled professional ready to begin a rewarding career as an Air Traffic Control Officer.

You will operate a wide variety of ATC simulators to support the delivery of both UK and ICAO ATC training courses for Aerodrome, Approach, Approach Radar, Area Procedural and Area Radar. You will also assist the instructional staff with the delivery of their courses and management staff with their day-to-day duties as required.

With governments looking for efficiencies in all areas of Aviation Training and Regulations, GATS is supporting the Swaziland Civil Aviation Authority (SWACAA) in providing affordable travel to Swaziland’s population.

Global ATS Limited (GATS) UK, as part of its International Business Development Strategy, has strengthened its Business Development Team expanding its support for International Markets.

    General Pet Care

    Peru Travel Safety Recommendations

Peruvian flag (Photo: peru flag button image by Andrey Zyk from Fotolia.com )

    Overview

Using common sense and seeking advice is key when it comes to travel safety. Uninformed travelers stand a much greater chance of ending up in a dangerous situation or losing their valuables. Tourists heading to Peru should know that while this South American country is a beautiful destination with lots to enjoy, it’s also a third-world country with a unique set of safety and security issues for travelers to be aware of.

    Getting Around Town

The quickest way to get around cities and towns in Peru is by taxi. Most taxis are operated by individuals rather than reputable companies. While uncommon, you may be robbed by an unknown taxi driver and/or his accomplices if you take an unofficial cab ride. Avoid this risk by always taking officially licensed taxis recommended by hotel, airport or tourist office staff. You’ll encounter swarms of taxis waiting outside the main airport in the capital of Lima and near bus terminals around the country. Do not take these taxis. Instead, ask an employee with official identification to help you arrange a ride from a licensed operator you can trust. If you can’t avoid taking an unknown taxi, make a point of noting the registration number and concealing all valuables before you get in.

    Long-Distance Bus Travel

Bus transportation is one of the primary methods of traveling between cities and towns in Peru. Avoid traveling at night, as many of the roads and highways in Peru are narrow and curvy which leads to a high rate of accidents. Hijacking is also more common at night along dark stretches of roads between towns. Schedule your trip so that you are traveling during daylight hours if possible. Try not to arrive in a new city or town at night, especially if you do not already have arrangements for a place to stay and direct transportation to the hotel. Keep valuables on your person at all times. Tuck backpack straps around your arms or feet, and check for your bags every time cargo is unloaded from the storage space below the bus. Things tend to go missing when you are careless or fail to pay close attention to your surroundings.

    Money and Valuables

Never carry large sums of cash with you. Use a credit or debit card to withdraw the money you need at ATMs or banks. All cities and towns have ATMs and bank offices. Smaller villages and remote locations may not have these facilities, so plan in advance to take along the necessary currency. Make sure you have completely closed a transaction at an ATM after withdrawing money. Most ATMs are equipped with English on-screen prompts.

Keep your passport with you or leave it in a secure safe at your hotel. Print a copy of your passport to keep on your person at all times and another to store with your personal items in case the original passport is lost or stolen.

Avoid taking valuables with you when you travel. If you do take valuables, make an effort to be discreet. For instance, don’t talk loudly on your fancy cell phone or look at pictures on your digital camera while on a public bus or walking around town at night. Be aware of your surroundings when carrying a backpack or purse. Thieves sometimes snatch bags or cut holes in bags while the victim remains unaware. Staying alert is the easiest way to negate this threat.

    Nightlife

Peruvian nightlife can be a blast but always put safety first. Never let a stranger buy you a drink. Purchase your own drinks and pay close attention to ensure no one slips anything into your glass. Tourists as well as locals have been drugged and robbed in Peru when accepting drinks from new acquaintances, so be careful.

Get back to your hotel or hostel safely. You should ask your hotel concierge for the number of an official taxi company that can be called to pick you up when you are ready to leave a disco or any other location around town. Travel in groups, and avoid drinking to the point of intoxication in order to keep your wits about you.

    Egypt: Safety in Egypt #top #travel #destinations

    Egypt: Safety in Egypt

    SECURITY SAFETY:

For UK residents, the FCO’s current warning state is at  FCO for visitors to Egypt and varies across the country with the Sinai generally being at a higher risk level and urging Britons against travel to the Sinai region, after a recent spate of militant attacks.

Sharm el-Sheikh is on the southern tip of the SInai peninsula  and is coloured in Green (as opposed to Orange or Red) as well as Cairo and Alexandria, in fact most of Egypt Is now Green on the FCO website and considered as relatively safe compared to other regions although it is recommended to read the security advice.

    Its website states:-

Attacks could be indiscriminate and could occur without prior warning in high risk areas (See Orange and red areas on FCO Website). Terrorists could target protestors and the Egyptian authorities. Attacks have mainly been aimed at the Egyptian security forces, their facilities and other government buildings. You should take great care near these buildings.

Attacks targeting foreigners in tourist resorts and elsewhere can’t be ruled out completely. But this could really apply to any country in the world, although Egypt is not a gun licensed nation.

In reality the Egyptian people are very welcoming and kind to tourists and that is generally the more common experience.

The advice currently (Jul 2014) warns against all travel to north Sinai, where there have been attacks on security on the Gaza/israeli border including one which killed 16 Egyptian  soldiers and a bus with 3 Korean tourists in February 2014

Egypt has been trying to rebuild its tourism industry after last year’s widespread unrest ended the long rule of Hosni Murbarak’s military dictatorship and is currently under a similar style Presient Sisi military dictatorship, and therefore nothing much has changed in Egypt.  It is the same as it was 10 or 20 years ago.  Egypt has not changed much really since the revolution as it has gone full circle back to military dictatorship.

In general, Egypt is a safe country to travel. Egyptians are very friendly – if you are in need of assistance they will generally try to help you as much as they are able, more than any one can imagine. For example, if you take a taxi from Cairo to Alexandria, you will be stopped at a checkpoint before leaving Cairo. They will ask where you are going, and communicate with the checkpoint at Alexandria to make sure you reach your destination within a certain time period. The same goes for most trips into the desert.  There are also several checkpoints from Cairo to Sharm el Shiekh when traveling by coach. Military officials get on the coach and check passports to ensure safety for tourists and check the identity of anyone travelling to that region.

As for casual crime (muggings and robberies), Egypt is quite safe. As for pickpocketing, really the problem is probably no greater than it is in most Western cities. In Egypt the problem of cheating and scams when buying in tourist places, this is likely to be doubling the price but is still relatively cheap with the exchange rate being 12 Egyptian pounds to 1 pound sterling. the tourist will find Egypt a bargain, hotel prices are extremely affordable and travellers can enjoy 5 star luxury at unrivalled prices.  Hotel staff go out of their way to ensure your stay be a pleasant and memorable experience.  Cairo has everything to offer and more.  It is more exciting than a number of big cities and is surprisingly very pleasantly cosmopolitan.

You will find the security situation in Egypt (as in many  countries) is frequently exaggerated by Western media outlets, creating a negative impressions that is somewhat amplified by the heavy-handed policies of Egyptian authorities in keeping tourists safe. The reality is that travelling in Egypt is probably more safe,  than visiting most Western capitals!

Egypt relies heavily on foreign tourism for its national income and both Egyptians and their government are extremely keen to prevent any occurrence that might create a bad impression and keep tourists away. Tourism is one of the country’s most important sources of hard currency, and besides not wanting any untoward incidents, Egypt is very pragmatic and wants in no way to jeopardize a vital economic benefit. Post script:  the above appraisal is not accurately dated. The danger level changes depending on the date one is reviewing it.  Currently the danger level in most of Egypt is coloured Green on FCO UK which is SAFE.

Egypt has a lot to offer tourists and in general is safe and welcoming to tourists.  In many ways it is the same as it was 10 years ago, it is still safe to walk at night as the big cities come alive and most Egyptians start socialising after 10pm at night, all the restaurants and cafes are open late.  It is safe to ride taxi’s and especially airport and hotel taxi’s go through high security checks.   Most taxi drivers in Egypt are graduates and over qualified, as are most service sector industries.  The majority of Egyptians are courteous and polite and friendly and extremely helpful and kind especially to tourists. Tourist destinations are also safe to visit with the vast majority of tourists having no problems and only positive experiences.
