To expand school computer coding clubs in Wales – BBC News

    #

£1.3m to expand school computer coding clubs in Wales

Media caption Education Secretary Kirsty Williams and Iolo, 10, on computer skills

Schools are to be given £1.3m to set up clubs to teach computer coding.

The investment over five years is part of the Welsh Government’s £100m to raise school standards over the assembly term.

Education Secretary Kirsty Williams said she wanted all pupils to have the opportunity to learn about and get involved in coding as the importance of digital skills continues to grow.

It is estimated there will be 100,000 new coding jobs by 2020 in the UK.

The Welsh Government said there are currently about 1.5 million jobs in the digital sector in the UK, 400,000 of which involve coding.

“Code is part of almost everyone’s life,” said Ms Williams. “When we check out social media, access an app or computer we are using systems created through code. It is an essential building block of our modern world and I want to make sure as many of our young people have knowledge of it as they develop their digital skills.”

The investment aims to expand the number of code clubs for learners aged three to 16 from the current number of 300.

Three years ago experts warned schools in Wales were in danger of being left behind in terms of digital education.

The new national curriculum, expected to be up and running by 2021, includes a recommendation computer programming and IT be given the same importance as literacy and numeracy.

    Image copyright Getty Images

    • Computer code is a set of rules and instructions, made up of words and numbers
    • When you put them in the right order, it will tell your computer what to do
    • Code is what makes it possible to create computer software, apps and websites
    • The apps on your phone, Facebook and this page you’re reading is all made with code

Ms Williams made the announcement at Llandough Primary school in the Vale of Glamorgan, where computer skills are already taught throughout the curriculum from nursery to year six.

But the school headmaster hopes the coding club it plans to open from September will add another dimension to learning.

“We are using coding on a daily basis and we’re engaged with lots of different companies who have helped us set up coding in our school,” said Mark Ellis.

“The curriculum itself is bringing coding into our school as well, but we are going to look to the wider community now and we want to look at our grandparents, our parents, and younger siblings coming in using our technologies to be able to have coding experiences and use them in the wider world.”

He explained the club model would offer flexibility and involve families so they can play a full part.

“There is a lack of understanding for some parents who have not seen what coding is and what it brings to children,” he said.

Image caption Pupils at Llandough Primary School will get a coding club from September

Maria Quevedo from the Raspberry Pi Foundation, which runs 10,000 coding clubs across 10 countries, said it was important young people became makers not just consumers.

“Every single job has an element of technology and digital in it and as time passes the world is becoming increasingly digital and technology is key,” she said.

Meanwhile, 10 year old Iolo, who was busy coding during the ministerial visit, had finished programming his game.

He said it had been almost as much fun as playing computer games and he would quite like to do it as a job.

Ms Williams said she wanted “as many schools as possible” to take up the opportunity and coding in particular was a specific skill which would help Welsh children compete in the global market in future.

Best Cooking Schools Around the World

More than any historic home tour, the School of Artisan Food provides a true taste of Downton Abbey through classes in traditional English cookery: cider making, wild game butchery, and fruit preserves.

It’s one example of the greater world of epicurean experiences that has opened up for travelers eager to pack their aprons and join immersion classes with local guides or expert cooks—whatever your time commitment, budget, and skill level.

We’ve done the dirty work to identify the best cooking programs around the globe, from a half-day course on chicken gumbo in New Orleans to a farm in the scenic backwaters of Kerala, India, where classes center on family recipes for chutney and curries. They share the ability to help travelers understand a local culture and to revisit a favorite destination with a fresh perspective. After all, it’s exhilarating to start the day at a local market then sit down to a meal of pasta with truffles, tom yum goong, or coquilles St. Jacques of your very own making.

Students are typically teamed up with multilingual instructors versed in the cuisine of the region. You can expect to pick up new kitchen skills and recipes, and lessons are often augmented by exclusive encounters with purveyors and artisanal growers, wine pourings at vineyards, and dinners set in private homes or at top chef tables tucked in a corner of their kitchen domain, so that you can observe pros in the heat of the action.

Some programs are suited to a weeklong vacation: kneading dough with a master pizzaiolo in Naples or cooking spice-infused tagines at a villa in the Palmeraie outside Marrakesh. Other daylong sessions cater to those who simply want to whet their appetites. Hotels and resorts are increasingly offering classes as well. Before booking, ask about class size, type of equipment (knives, stovetops) provided, and what meals and accommodation are included.

Here are the latest programs for seasoned cooks as well as beginners ripe for discovery.

Culinary Institute of America, St. Helena, CA

The Culinary Institute of America (from $2,195) at Greystone, in Napa Valley, runs a Flavors of Wine Country “boot camp” for beginners. The five-day, hands-on course introduces you to northern Californian cuisine, paired with wines from the world-class vineyards that surround the campus.

    Castello di Vicarello, Tuscany, Italy

At the 12th-century Castello di Vicarello (from $260; doubles from $530), hotelier and cookbook author Aurora Baccheschi Berti focuses on the rustic cuisine of Maremma, on Tuscany’s southwest coast.

Top Dish: Tortelli with ricotta and spinach, which you’ll prepare using the estate’s own olive oil and produce from the kitchen garden.

5 of 25 Courtesy of Pizza Consulting

    Pizza Consulting, Campania, Italy

In Naples, owner and master pizzaiolo Enzo Coccia of the celebrated Pizzeria La Notizia holds weeklong classes through his Pizza Consulting (from $950). Learn the secrets behind Neapolitan pizza—from proofing doppio-zero -flour dough to firing wood-burning ovens.

Don’t Miss: A visit to one of the regional olive and tomato producers that supply Coccia’s restaurant.

Top Cooking Schools ~ Find The Best Ranking Culinary Arts –

The Best of the Best in Culinary Training

No matter your profession, becoming the best often means training with the best. This is especially true for aspiring chefs. Hands-on training and experience are key to a young cook’s success, and will help determine future job opportunities for years to come. Here’s how to distinguish the top-ranking schools:

    The Program

The kitchen is the real star of any culinary career or training program. A chef is no one without it. Top schools will have the best kitchens with the best equipment. Some will differentiate with labs for baking, butchering and wine making. An extension of the kitchen should be a student-run restaurant or bakery. Top schools will have fully functional operations that are open to the public and that offer students training opportunities in the front and back of the house. If there is no restaurant, look for other events that are open to the public, such as cooking demonstrations or gourmet-dinner nights. The best schools will emphasize training by providing these opportunities and requiring a high number of cooking hours. Training may also be offered in the form of internships or apprenticeships in the community. Many schools will have established partnerships with leading businesses to give students training and experience.

Faculty at top schools will have experience as chefs or other restaurant leaders. They should also be certified and should represent a variety of culinary traditions. Small class sizes will give students the benefit of learning the most from these instructors.

    The Results

The proof is in the pudding, as they say, and top culinary schools will produce graduates with strong job prospects. You should look for high graduation and employment rates as a measure of a school’s ranking. Note the types of jobs that graduates get and track their career paths. If students are finding long-term opportunities with good salaries, it’s a good indication of the quality of the training program. Top schools with also have a large alumni network – which will be useful to students and recent graduates for networking to find jobs or opportunities for internships.

There are no comprehensive ranking guides for culinary schools, but a number of surveys have been conducted to get the opinions of students and industry leaders on who make up the cream of the crop in culinary training.

    Time Management: One-Year M.B.A.s

Cornell’s Johnson School of Management enrolled its largest one-year M.B.A. class this year, and has started a new program on the digital economy at Cornell Tech in New York City. Credit Heather Ainsworth for The New York Times

Streamline, accelerate, graduate. Educators have been scurrying to figure out how to cut short just about every field of professional study, be it law, medicine or business.

Graduate business programs were first truncated in Europe in the late 1950s, half a century after the two-year degree was introduced by Dartmouth. But one-year M.B.A.s are only starting to catch on in the United States with cost- and time-conscious students.

Donato Wilkins started a graduate program in May 2013 at Emory’s Goizueta Business School and is already headed toward a new job in mergers and acquisitions at PricewaterhouseCoopers. “I did the math, and the return on investment for the one-year program was much higher than for the two-year program,” said Mr. Wilkins, who had worked three years in corporate finance at Xerox and Newell Rubbermaid but wanted to get into a more exciting slice of finance. He considered both savings on tuition and the additional income from starting a job with an M.B.A. salary one year earlier.

He believes this: “You get the exact same benefit as the two-year program — the same professors, the community, the G.B.S. network, all the on-campus resources and Goizueta brand — in less time and for less money.”

Enrollments are up 26 percent for Goizueta’s program over last year. Cornell enrolled its largest one-year M.B.A. class on its Ithaca campus this year, and has opened a new program focused on the global digital economy at Cornell Tech in New York City. A long program was a concern when designing an M.B.A. for techies, said Douglas M. Stayman, associate dean for M.B.A. programs at Cornell’s Johnson School of Management. “The tech economy moves quickly, and if people are out of it for a long time, it’s an issue.” (The one-year M.B.A. runs about $93,000 versus $116,000 for the two-year.)

The Graduate Management Admission Council counts 189 one-year programs, compared to 173 four years ago, and 55 percent of them have reported increases in applications over last year.

Proponents say a year is sufficient for students with strong quantitative or analytical skills who are willing to clear their schedules to study. Typically, students start in May, and cram in almost a year’s worth of foundational business classes in four months. In September, they fall in with students who are in their second year of a traditional program, taking elective classes, joining industry-related and cultural clubs (essential for network-building), participating in case competitions and interviewing at companies. Students in the one- and two-year programs graduate as a class, with the same degree, the following May.

Some schools let students go even faster. The University of Florida’s Hough Graduate School of Business. for example, runs a 10-month M.B.A. for students who graduated with an undergraduate business degree within the previous seven years.

The pace of the one-year degree — essentially completing three-quarters of the academic credits of a two-year degree in half the time — can limit the appeal. “One-year is for people who are accelerating their careers, not changing their careers,” Mr. Stayman said. “You don’t have time to do career exploration.”

Employers interview during the fall, so students with five months of M.B.A. study under their belts are competing with students with 15 months, including an internship. One-year students need to have enough of a career history to make the case that they don’t need that internship.

The positive spin, said Alex Sevilla, assistant dean and director of Florida’s M.B.A. programs: “A student can say to a recruiter, ‘I voluntarily chose the one-year program, and that gives you some indication of my horsepower.’ ”

According to G.M.A.C.’s 2013 student poll, fewer job seekers from one-year programs (53 percent) had received offers by March than had students in the final year of two-year programs (61 percent). While one-year students reported an average 70 percent increase over pre-M.B.A. earnings, their earnings boost was 9 percent lower than what two-year students reported.

There are other drawbacks. Students don’t have time to spend a semester abroad. They forfeit some electives. They can join clubs but can’t lead them (presidents are picked the spring before they arrive). And elite business schools like Harvard, Wharton and Stanford don’t have one-year M.B.A.s. “We haven’t felt comfortable offering a one-year M.B.A. here,” said Madhav Rajan, who oversees Stanford’s full-time M.B.A. program. “I think there would be huge demand if we ever went that route, but given the content we want to disseminate, that’s not something we’ve pursued.

    Stephen D. Nimer, M.D.

Cell biology has an ever-growing cast of molecules that regulate how cells perform. In many cases, proteins bind to other proteins to change their trajectory and alter cellular function. These binding interactions are incredibly important to understand. In particular, researchers are trying to figure out why changes in the interactions of proteins can cause cancer.

Recently, Stephen D. Nimer, M.D. director of Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, was co-senior author on a paper, published in the journal PNAS. that describes how the protein DPF2 regulates blood production. DPF2 helps determine whether blood cells stay immature or mature into various cell types. High levels of DPF2 are seen in patients with acute myelogenous leukemia ( AML ), an aggressive type of blood cancer.

For years, a protein called vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) has been known for its ability to generate new blood vessels. As tumors grow, and need more oxygen and nutrients, they secrete VEGF to increase their blood supply. That was a radical discovery 20 years ago, and some believed it would create many therapeutic opportunities against cancer.

    Explanation of Radiation Therapy

Radiation therapy utilizes ionizing beams of radiation as a form of treatment prescribed by an oncologist. Typically, this type of treatment is implemented as a means of localizing malignant cells associated with cancer. The machinery that is used to provide this type of treatment is called a linear accelerator. Therapists that operate this machinery must possess a high level of skill and expertise to provide the correct dosage in the exact area needed in order to ensure a patient’s safety throughout treatment. When the linear accelerator focuses these beams of radiation on cancerous cells throughout the body, the DNA in those cells becomes damaged causing them to shrink or, in some cases, disappear completely. In addition to properly operating highly technical equipment and inducing treatment protocol prescribed by an oncologist, radiation therapists must excel in intrapersonal communication in order to inform patients of impending procedures as well provide emotional support. At Cambridge Health, our radiation therapist degree program provides students with all of these integral pieces of knowledge to ensure confidence and success upon graduation.

Student dress code: a letter from the superintendent

The topic of dress codes and school uniforms has always generated conversations! At the school district and at school sites, we have had several complaints from students, parents, community members, and staff about the appearance and lack of modesty of our students, particularly during the warm weather times. The standardized shirts have addressed several of the modesty issues, and now the concern is the length of shorts, skirts, dresses, etc. Our discussion has included how awkward it is for our staff to address issues of modesty, especially for those students wearing really short shorts, skirts, etc. We decided that before moving to a uniform bottoms policy, we would set a modesty measure that allows students more choice in colors and styles than a uniform would, but also meets the modesty standard. The new language is:

Shorts and skirts must be fingertip length. This means long enough so that when standing straight, hands at sides. the hem is at the edge of the fingertips. Students are responsible for checking in the mirror before coming to school.

This ensures that while buying school clothes, every student has a measuring stick with them!

Some families have expressed concerns about being able to find appropriate length items. We will be working with our local stores to see if they can stock more options. Levi’s, Dickies, Lee, Eddie Bauer, and Wrangler all have really stylish shorts in a longer length. Also, all of the uniform vendors, such as French Toast or Cat & Jack, sell longer shorts and skirts, and they are often less expensive and easily accessed on line. I did a search online for longer shorts and was really amazed at all of the options and how stylish they were for both our boys and girls.

We are hoping that as our families are doing their school clothes shopping, these suggestions will ensure success. We will be enforcing the dress code at all of our schools beginning the first day of school.

    Diana Asseier
    Superintendent, Lake Havasu Unified

The new dress code policy will officially take effect during the 2017-18 school year.

First steps taken on school bond sales

UPDATE 4/13/17. The first round of school bonds have been sold. It is expected that money from the sales will be available May 11 so the district can start working on bond funded projects.

The Lake Havasu Unified Governing Board has approved the first round of school improvement bond sales to finance school repairs and improvements. The first round of sales will raise $16.9 million. Sale of a total $49,050,000 in bonds was approved by voters this past November.

    Override applied

The Lake Havasu Unified Governing Board has approved an employee compensation package and a change in athletic fees for the 2017-18 school year. Thanks to voter approval of a budget override this past November, district employees will see an increase to their base pay, a longevity supplement based on years of service, and other financial benefits. The board also approved a reduction in the student athletic fee cap from $800 to $400 at the high school, and from $400 to $200 at the middle school.

What is database management system (DBMS)? Definition from #database #management #schools

    #

    database management system (DBMS)

A database management system (DBMS) is system software for creating and managing databases. The DBMS provides users and programmers with a systematic way to create, retrieve, update and manage data .

    Download this free guide

SQL Server Import Export Wizard Step-By-Step Tutorial

In this expert-led tutorial, senior DBA and technical trainer Basit Farooq provides a step-by-step guide for using the SQL Server Import and Export Wizard to transfer data between SQL Server databases and Microsoft Excel worksheets.

By submitting your personal information, you agree that TechTarget and its partners may contact you regarding relevant content, products and special offers.

You also agree that your personal information may be transferred and processed in the United States, and that you have read and agree to the Terms of Use and the Privacy Policy .

A DBMS makes it possible for end users to create, read, update and delete data in a database. The DBMS essentially serves as an interface between the database and end users or application programs. ensuring that data is consistently organized and remains easily accessible.

The DBMS manages three important things: the data, the database engine that allows data to be accessed, locked and modified — and the database schema. which defines the database’s logical structure. These three foundational elements help provide concurrency. security, data integrity and uniform administration procedures. Typical database administration tasks supported by the DBMS include change management. performance monitoring/tuning and backup and recovery. Many database management systems are also responsible for automated rollbacks. restarts and recovery as well as the logging and auditing of activity.

The DBMS is perhaps most useful for providing a centralized view of data that can be accessed by multiple users, from multiple locations, in a controlled manner. A DBMS can limit what data the end user sees, as well as how that end user can view the data, providing many views of a single database schema. End users and software programs are free from having to understand where the data is physically located or on what type of storage media it resides because the DBMS handles all requests.

The DBMS can offer both logical and physical data independence. That means it can protect users and applications from needing to know where data is stored or having to be concerned about changes to the physical structure of data (storage and hardware). As long as programs use the application programming interface (API ) for the database that is provided by the DBMS, developers won’t have to modify programs just because changes have been made to the database.

With relational DBMSs (RDBMSs ), this API is SQL. a standard programming language for defining, protecting and accessing data in a RDBMS.

    Popular types of DBMSes

Popular database models and their management systems include:

Relational database management system (RDMS) – adaptable to most use cases, but RDBMS Tier-1 products can be quite expensive.

NoSQL DBMS – well-suited for loosely defined data structures that may evolve over time.

In-memory database management system (IMDBMS) – provides faster response times and better performance.

Columnar database management system (CDBMS) – well-suited for data warehouses that have a large number of similar data items.

Cloud-based data management system – the cloud service provider is responsible for providing and maintaining the DBMS.

    Advantages of a DBMS

Using a DBMS to store and manage data comes with advantages, but also overhead. One of the biggest advantages of using a DBMS is that it lets end users and application programmers access and use the same data while managing data integrity. Data is better protected and maintained when it can be shared using a DBMS instead of creating new iterations of the same data stored in new files for every new application. The DBMS provides a central store of data that can be accessed by multiple users in a controlled manner.

Central storage and management of data within the DBMS provides:

    • Data abstraction and independence
    • Data security
    • A locking mechanism for concurrent access
    • An efficient handler to balance the needs of multiple applications using the same data
    • The ability to swiftly recover from crashes and errors, including restartability and recoverability
    • Robust data integrity capabilities
    • Logging and auditing of activity
    • Simple access using a standard application programming interface (API)
    • Uniform administration procedures for data

Another advantage of a DBMS is that it can be used to impose a logical, structured organization on the data. A DBMS delivers economy of scale for processing large amounts of data because it is optimized for such operations.

A DBMS can also provide many views of a single database schema. A view defines what data the user sees and how that user sees the data. The DBMS provides a level of abstraction between the conceptual schema that defines the logical structure of the database and the physical schema that describes the files, indexes and other physical mechanisms used by the database. When a DBMS is used, systems can be modified much more easily when business requirements change. New categories of data can be added to the database without disrupting the existing system and applications can be insulated from how data is structured and stored.

Of course, a DBMS must perform additional work to provide these advantages, thereby bringing with it the overhead. A DBMS will use more memory and CPU than a simple file storage system. And, of course, different types of DBMSes will require different types and levels of system resources.

    Beauty Therapy Courses

    What is beauty therapy?

Beauty therapy is the treatment of hair, skin and nails to enhance appearances and to repair damage. Beauty therapy treatments sometimes also include massages and other body relaxation exercises. Treatments usually take place in salons, but some beauty therapists also do house calls, work on film sets, or work backstage at live performances.

    Why study beauty therapy courses?

Many people do their own hair, nails and make-up every day and wonder what the point would be of going to study beauty therapy. Like in other areas, there are some beauty therapy skills that can be self-taught, and other skills that can only be acquired through formal training. If you want to work as a beauty therapist, either by starting up your own business or by seeking employment in a salon, you will need to go for formal training in beauty therapy. Here are some reasons why you might want to consider studying beauty therapy:

You can learn how to take care of yourself and your clients.
You can learn how to perform a wide variety of beauty treatments.
You can improve your earning potential: many people are willing to pay good money for effective beauty treatments.
By completing a course in beauty therapy, you can gain formal recognition for the knowledge and skills that you acquire. Such formal recognition may increase your credibility in the eyes of both clients and employers.

    Beauty Therapy Courses, Skills Academy

How do I get started with Beauty Therapy Courses?

Skills Academy makes studying and moving on to the next step in your career very easy. You can go through the list of beauty therapy courses and choose one that you are interested in. If you are not sure which course is right for you, you can get in touch with one of our friendly Course Experts: they will be able to help you decide on a course.

Where can I work as a beauty therapist?

    • In a salon
    • On a cruise ship
    • At a spa or health resort

BYU grad students ranked high in top law and business school

    #

BYU grad students ranked high in top law and business school categories by Princeton review

In preparation for an anticipated flood of college graduates, the Princeton Review published “The Best 168 Law Schools” and “The Best 296 Business Schools” on Tuesday, each with 11 different ranked categories.

Two Brigham Young University graduate programs ranked near the top of those lists.

The Marriott School of Management ranked second for most family friendly business school, while the J. Reuben Clark Law School was third in two law-school categories — most competitive students and most conservative students.

The University of Utah was also profiled in each book as being among the best law schools and business schools, though it was not on any of “Top 10” lists. Additionally, Weber State University was profiled among top business schools.

“All of the rankings in both books are based completely on student survey,” Rob Franek, senior vice president and publisher for the Princeton Review, said. “It is the opinion of students at BYU, and the other hundreds of schools.”

BYU has been a consistent top-runner among the best law and business colleges in the United States, Franek said, and those graduate schools are amongst the most powerful in the nation.

The BYU business school has made the top five family friendly list for years.

“It’s a ranking we’re certainly proud of,” said Robert Gardner, director of Alumni Relations. “It’s not one we are necessarily surprised by. It’s one we’ve always ranked well in with our family culture here. We love that ranking and we expect it to continue in that way.”

Among the MBA class that will graduate in April, 76 percent are married, up from 64 in the previous class. The percentage of married students in the MBA program is usually somewhere in the mid-to-upper 60-percent range, Gardner said, so this is a high year.

The survey questions for the family friendly category pertain to the happiness of married students, the number of kids students have and the help the school gives to students’ spouses and children.

“We have an active MBA spouse association that makes sure spouses are well-networked and well-supported,” Gardner said. “Last month they had a family barbecue at a park near campus. They set up regular meetings. It’s activities like those that really make a difference.”

The law school has consistently ranked high on the most-competitive and most-conservative lists, sitting in the top four on each since 2008.

For the most-conservative students category, known in past years as “students lean to the right,” surveyed students were asked if there was a prevailing political bent at the school and how they would categorize themselves, Franek said.

The answers students can choose from are: very liberal, liberal, middle of the road, somewhat conservative and very conservative.

“We ask students in 368 law schools and compare school to school,” Franek said. “Compared to other schools BYU has consistently been on this list.”

For the competitive category, students are asked about the number of hours they study outside class, hours of sleep they get nightly and the number of hours they believe their peers in the school study outside class.

“It is partially about their experience and partially their perception of others,” Franek said. “It speaks directly to their academic experience.”

On average, 107 students at each law school and 64 students at each business school were surveyed for the lists in the books’ 2013 editions. The survey is annual and students can fill it out throughout the school year at princetonreview.com .

    Thread: Self Paced Associates degree?

With some planning you could go WGU and then when you get to 60 credits just apply them to any of the big three for your 2 year. You do not have to take classes with them to get your degree if the credits you have corresponds with their degree plan. There is some cost associated with this method and it doesn’t completely answer your question, but I thought it could possibly be applicable.

Since LilKatie24 is new here, she probably needs to know that the Big Three refer to:

These are three, accredited, legitimate, colleges that will accept almost 100% of your degree through transfer credit. Some of the degrees require a capstone of 3 credits, but the rest can all be transferred. Other than that, pay for application, pay for enrollment and pay for graduation. everything else can be transferred. If you want to save money, you can take proficiency examinations for credit. These should be pretty easy since most of them are basic, and you already have some knowledge about Computer Science /Information Systems and the like. At the very least, you can use them for whatever general education requirements you need. Some types of these exams are:

Cardiac Cath Lab Nurse, Nursing, certified registered nurse anesthetist schools.#Certified #registered

    #

    Cardiac Cath Lab Nurse

What Does a Cardiac Cath Lab Nurse Do?

Cardiac catheterization, or heart cath, is the insertion of a catheter into a heart chamber or vessel. Catherization can be used as a diagnostic tool to investigate possible cardiac conditions or used as a form of treatment. A specialized subset of cardiac catheterization is coronary catheterization, which involves catheterizing coronary arteries. From angioplasties, valvuloplasties, to stent placements, catheterization procedures take place in state of the art labs. During a catheterization procedure, the catheter, or thin, flexible tube, is inserted into a vein in the patient s leg or arm then moved into the arteries or heart. Cardiac cath lab nurses can also assist physicians in implanting pacemakers and implantable cardioverter-defibillators (ICDs). They must be good with technology and able to learn quickly. The majority of cardiac cath lab nurses work in hospitals and clinics, generally stationed in intensive care units and cardiovascular catheterization labs if they re available.

How Can I Become a Cardiac Cath Lab Nurse?

Cardiac cath lab nurses are registered nurses with a certification or advanced level experience in this discipline. Obviously cardiac cath lab nurses should also possess a high level of understanding and training in cardiac anatomy and physiology. Upon receiving a degree and license as a registered nurse and working for a specific period of time, those interested can participate in a hospital run cardiac cath lab training program if they re available, then apply for a voluntary certification exam. The training program consists of classroom study as well as several hundred hours of supervised nursing experience in an actual cath lab. During this training the nurse will learn the differences between cardiac conditions and how to treat them. The length of these programs may vary by hospital or state, but generally can last up to six months. Be sure to only participate in certification exams that are approved of by your hospital, state or national certification board. Should a hospital led training program not be available, many registered nurses spend one to two years in the emergency room, intensive care unit or coronary care unit before they enter the cardiac cath lab.

What Is the Career and Salary Outlook for a Cardiac Cath Lab Nurse?

With heart disease on the rise in the United States, many more patients suffering from cardiac conditions are entering the health care system in need of specialized care. This fact coupled with the national nursing shortage leaves the future employment outlook very positive for cardiac cath lab nurses. According the National Center for Disease Control, nearly 1.5 million heart attacks occur in this country alone each year and more than 8 million Americans suffer from heart disease. According to one source, average annual salaries for cardiac cath lab nurses vary by geographic location and the nurse s experience, but can range from $41,000-$63,500 per year. Also, cardiac cath lab nurses have the advantage of cross training with other departments which increases their expertise and marketability to potential employers. Obviously, the more knowledgeable a medical professional is about more medical disciplines, the more likely they will to receive a higher salary.

    Military and UWF

One of the most innovative opportunities the Internet opened up for men and women serving in the military is the ability to earn a college degree online – wherever they are based or deployed. It’s also a great option for employed veterans and their spouses – allowing them to earn a degree without taking time off from their civilian jobs.

Online education has come a long way and the University of West Florida offers robust, highly interactive learning environments that can make online learning as engaging as on campus classes.

UWF makes it easy and affordable for military personnel and their family members to continue their college programs. Tuition fees are very affordable and are well within the military services range of tuition fees authorized for payment. The UWF out-of-state fee waiver covers the out-of-state portion of assessed tuition and fees for students enrolled in our fully online programs or certificates. This waiver makes tuition and fees only slightly higher than Florida resident tuition even though students may live outside the state.

For veterans and their spouses, the flexibility of online degree and certificate programs, coupled with the Post 9/11 GI Bill, could cover up to 100% of tuition expenses.

Military Times – Best for Vets Colleges

Military Times announced its 2014 Best for Vets College Rankings and UWF is #22 in the nation. The organization comprising Army Times, Navy Times, Air Force Times and Marine Corps Times placed a new emphasis on academic rigor this year when conducting and scoring the fourth annual Best for Vets: Colleges survey, a highly respected 150-question analysis of a school’s complete offerings for veterans.

Best for Vets provides service men and women a gauge by which to judge whether a school or degree program will truly benefit them. The rankings factored in service member enrollment, percentage of tuition covered by the GI Bill, and availability of specific programs to help service members.

    Yellow Ribbon Program

The University of West Florida (UWF) has been a participating member of the Yellow Ribbon Program since 2011. UWF has voluntarily entered into an agreement with the VA to fund tuition expenses that exceed the highest public in-state undergraduate tuition rate. This agreement is part of the Yellow Ribbon GI Education Enhancement Program (Yellow Ribbon Program ) is a provision of the Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2008. Only individuals entitled to the maximum benefit rate (based on service requirements) may receive this funding.

If eligible, the Post-9/11 GI Bill pays up to the highest public in-state undergraduate tuition and fees. You may have tuition and fees that exceed that amount if you are in an out-of-state status. UWF will pay 50% of the amount above the maximum allowed by the Post 9/11 GI Bill and the VA will pay the remaining 50%.

G.I. Jobs Magazine – Military Friendly School

UWF NAMED MILITARY FRIENDLY SCHOOL BY “G.I. JOBS MAGAZINE” for the Seventh consecutive year!

The University of West Florida was named a 2015 Military Friendly School by “G.I. Jobs Magazine.” The list honors the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools which are doing the most to embrace America’s veterans as students. Schools on the list range from state universities and private colleges to community colleges and trade schools. Criteria for making the Military Friendly Schools List included efforts to recruit and retain military and veteran students, results in recruiting military and veteran students and academic accreditations.

The list was compiled through exhaustive research starting last May during which “G.I. Jobs” polled more than 7,000 schools nationwide. Methodology, criteria and weighting for the list were developed with the assistance of an Academic Advisory Committee (AAC) consisting of educators and administrators from Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Toledo, Duquesne University, Coastline Community College and Lincoln Technical Institute. “This list is especially important now because the recently enacted Post-9/11 GI Bill has given veterans virtually unlimited financial means to go to school,” said Rich McCormack, “G.I. Jobs” publisher. “Veterans can now enroll in any school, provided they’re academically qualified, so schools are clamoring for them like never before. Veterans need a trusted friend to help them decide where to get educated, and the Military Friendly Schools list is that trusted friend.”

    New Joint Services Education Transcript

The Sailor Marine Corps American Council on Education Registry Transcript (SMART), the Army American Council on Education Registry Transcript System (AARTS) and the Coast Guard Institute (CGI) have been aligned to implement one collaborative transcript program called the Joint Services Transcript (JST). The JST is now the official transcript tool for Army, Marine Corps, Navy and Coast Guard personnel. Service members can join upcoming webinar sessions on the new JST by registering. For more information on the JST, contact Laurine Anderson. JST Program Manager at (850) 452-1001, Opt 3, Ext. 1097. Welcome to the Minnesota School of Business

To our 100,000 graduates, our current students, our talented and dedicated employees, and our communities who have provided great jobs and support to our Schools; we thank you and want you to be proud of the education provided during the past 140 years. We want to be clear that the findings from the Hennepin County Court case with the Minnesota Attorney General showed no widespread systemic fraud and no issues with the education we provide. We want you all to know the facts and to know that we are fighting to not have the schools close. For more background on what is happening, click here. While we work through this challenging time, we are working to find pathways for our students. It is our goal to make sure students have options to complete their degree with us or transfer credits to another accredited institution.

    Minnesota School of Business

Each Minnesota campus will remain open through at least the end of January to help students get transcripts, answer questions and facilitate meetings with multiple institutions that are willing to accept credits from Globe/MSB. See articulation/transfer list.

    Minnesota students

The school is offering some classes online, through MSB Blaine and for graduate students at our Minneapolis location who do not need federal funding. Eligible students are those who can complete their program in the winter 2017 or spring 2017 quarters.

    Globe University

Globe officially discontinued operations at the South Dakota and Wisconsin campuses, as of Dec. 31, 2016. Globe transferred administration of those campuses for teach-out purposes to Broadview University. Students in South Dakota and Wisconsin have the option to complete their program at their existing location or online through a teach-out agreement approved with Broadview University.

    About Broadview University

Broadview University, based in Utah, is accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Universities.

The Hennepin County, Minnesota District Court issued an Order on Sept. 8, 2016 finding that Globe violated the Uniform Deceptive Trade Practices Act, Minnesota statute § 325D.44. As a result of this Order, the Minnesota Office of Higher Education (MOHE) issued an order revoking Globe’s and MSB’s registration with the state and ordering Globe and MSB to cease enrollment of new students.

Globe and MSB are currently under a show-cause directive from its accreditor, ACICS.

In addition, on Dec. 6, 2016, the U.S. Department of Education announced its decision to deny Globe’s and MSB’s participation in the Title IV student financial aid programs.

Globe and MSB have appealed the MOHE order.

Forensic Psychology Degrees & Careers How to Become a Forensic Psychologist

Forensic psychology schools in new york

  • Forensic psychology schools in new york

  • Forensic psychology schools in new york

Forensic psychology schools in new york

  • Forensic psychology is a fascinating career that combines psychology and the legal system. In general terms, forensic psychologists focus on the application of psychological theory and practice to the criminal, court and corrections systems. Forensic psychologists work with the justice system and members of the court to assist in its functioning. The application of many legal concepts requires understanding psychological principles, such as state of mind, memory and perception.

Due to the unique and specialized nature of forensic psychology, a graduate education is a necessity. Here’s a discussion on what forensic psychologists do, what it takes to become one and how to succeed as a forensic psychologist professional.

What Does a Forensic Psychologist Do?

A forensic psychologist helps facilitate the legal process by providing psychology expertise to various individuals in the legal system. Their understanding and explanations of certain aspects of psychological health can help move along court cases, inform juries, determine the reasons behind crimes being committed, and otherwise play an integral role in the system.

Forensic psychologists provide advice to trial counsel, evaluate litigating parties and witnesses on behalf of judges or attorneys, and conduct research, such as figuring out why juries vote a particular way or why eyewitness testimony can be unreliable. A forensic psychologist might serve as an expert witness to explain a complex psychological concept to the jury, provide consulting advice to an attorney about a person’s state of mind or evaluate a defendant to determine whether they are competent to stand trial.

Beyond the court system, forensic psychologists are often employed in jails and prisons, providing rehabilitative treatment and education to inmates in preparation for their release and return to the outside world. Forensic psychology professionals are also sometimes hired by police departments as consultants and profilers during criminal investigations. Finally, forensic psychologists conduct research on criminal behavior and the development of effective clinical treatments.

Forensic Psychologist Salaries Across the US

What forensic psychologists can expect to make depends on many factors, including their education, legal experience, courtroom savvy and geographic location. This map represents typical salaries forensic psychologists can expect to make based on what state they’re working in.
