Travel Tips for Senior Travelers

Plan an Itinerary Right for You

You probably do not want to book a cruise with rowdy spring breakers, or spend a week in the sun fighting crowds at Disneyland. Often vacationers can return from their travels more tired and exhausted then when they left because of the pace of their itinerary. Vacations are meant to be fun, relaxing, and refreshing. So your itinerary should fit your energy, and you should have as much time as you want for the things that most interest you, whether it’s visiting the Vatican, photographing wildlife in Africa, or sampling tea in London. We can help you arrange travel plans for a trip that caters to your pace and interests.

Consider Individual or Group Travel Plans

If you are planning to travel by yourself, we can accommodate and help you tailor your plans. Many popular tourist destinations offer tour packages for individuals, often with an option of including them in a group of other travelers of similar age and interests. If you are planning a trip with a spouse or friend, we can also accommodate your plans and help you find options that fit your tastes.

Senior Vacations in Europe

Most European vacations begin in London with a tour of the capital cities. European tours are a favorite of senior travelers .

Seniors no longer want to sit at home and grow old or go visit nearby relatives for their vacation. Today, seniors are rapidly making up a large segment of the tourism industry. While most seniors have been to California or Florida, many have never crossed the Atlantic. Going to Europe is different and just as much fun as any place in North America. For seniors who like to travel to Europe, a little homework is required. There are many great countries in Europe and each has its own distinct language, people, culture, and traditions.  Now is the time to take a senior vacation to Europe.

With the current recession, almost every country in Europe has now become an affordable destination for seniors, special discounts and deals are available for all tourists and especially discounts on seniors tours.  There are many countries in Europe worth visiting but one should decide beforehand where they would like to go.  There is so much to see when you decide you want to tour Europe.  Taking one of the many senior tours available is a good decision because a senior travel package will give you a good cross section of European cities and activities.

The first thing seniors searching travel options should do is browse the web and get an idea about Europe. Next is to talk to a travel agent or program that caters to senior vacations only.  Find out what companies are offering European bus tours .  Or perhaps you d like to travel by train? There are many deals for seniors available at this time of the year and the itinerary needs to be specific for the mature traveler. Many types of tours to Europe including sight seeing, hiking, biking mountain climbing, going to the vineyards or staying-put vacation where one rests and enjoys peace. Some tours to Europe including spending time in cities like London or Paris, in a plush resort and being spoilt rotten.

Seniors can also swap houses which can make a European vacation very cheap. There are many companies that specialize in arranging house swaps as a means of affordable vacations. However, be careful about signing any agreements. Have an attorney review the forms before you sign any papers.

Once you decide your destination of travel, you need to decide if you want to go alone or in tour group. If you decide to go with a tour group for your senior vacation, you have no hassles and the entire trip is arranged by the travel agent. Everything from your transport to the airport, airfare, hotels, driver, and local guides is prearranged. All you need is to show up for the flight. The biggest advantage of flying with a senior travel tour group is that it is convenient and cheap. Large tour group operators deal with many customers and get large discounts that are passed on to consumers. Further, going with a tour group means you also get access to unusual and or popular sites with ease. For example, going to the Vatican museum in Rome alone will mean waiting in a line for hours/days. Guided tour groups have their own Vatican museum access times via different doors. Going with tour groups also means not having to deal with language problems or what to wear for dinner or not knowing where to go. Further tour groups provide education and new ways to see other cultures. Finally, tour groups are one way to meet other people of your own age group and develop some type of social interaction.

The disadvantages of going with senior tour groups to Europe is that since all the itineraries are prearranged, you have little choice in the matter. If you are an independent traveler, who are selective and picky, then group tours may not be right for you. Many tour groups jam up itineraries so that you see a lot in a short period of time. This way there is little time for spontaneous sightseeing, going shopping or even visiting a local friend. The other negative about senior travel tours is that most itineraries are detailed and involve a lot of traveling, walking, climbing, and hiking. Therefore, if you have health concerns, you may not be able to keep up. The final point about going with tour groups is that everything is scheduled on a particular time. regardless of many factors. Therefore, if you want to sleep in one day, or are exhausted, you have very little control of where you want to go or when you want to go. If your hotel does not live upto your expectations, then you are stuck.

Therefore, before you jump for your senior vacation to Europe, sit down, and ask your self what you want, where you would like to go, and what you want do when you get there. The better prepared you are, the more enjoyable will be your trip. Call a travel agent and discus any issues you may have and then you can see Europe the way you want.

Life Insurance for Seniors Get Coverage Now

In many ways, being a senior is as much or more stressful than at other times in our lives. We will explore some of the questions asked most often by seniors about life insurance for seniors. Some seniors are convinced life insurance at their age either is either not available or very expensive. Let s dispel some common myths and answer some of the nagging questions you may have. You will hopefully get some peace of mind about insurance and be able to determine what to look for.

Senior Life Insurance Is Too Difficult or Too Expensive to Get

This is one of the concerns most frequently mentioned by seniors have about life insurance. First, your age and even your health should never be obstacles to getting the coverage you need. There are many good policies you can get at any age or state of health.

There are many companies willing to provide coverage and policy types that are both readily available and priced to fit nearly everyone’s pocketbook. Some companies even offer senior discounts on all kinds of policies designed for seniors. This is one concern you can remove from your list now – you CAN get life insurance.

Are My Final Expenses Covered without Senior Life Insurance?

An average funeral costs $10,000-$20,000 in the U.S. today. So that these costs are taken care of and to avoid burdening family and loved ones with these expenses, many seniors choose to secure senior life insurance that covers these costs.

Another way to handle these expenses is to allocate part of an existing policy may have to distribute the funds necessary for these expenses. Other possible options include having a cash value or permanent policy. These kinds of policies can be secured when you retire and be dedicated to this specific purpose.

Many seniors with insufficient assets or life insurance already in place often choose to make sure these costs are covered by applying for a universal or whole life policy. These policies are popular with seniors and there are many insurance companies that offer them at discounted rates for seniors. Many even have provisions that have few or even no medical examination requirements as conditions for approval.

Senior Life Insurance Policies Can Allow You to Build a Legacy

A few of the wealthiest families in America built fortunes and estates spanning numerous generations using the proceeds from life insurance policies. For just a few cents on the dollar, a life policy can be instrumental in creating a noteworthy estate for your heirs or assigns.

The funds can be combined with other assets that you have accumulated during your life. Using this approach, a far more considerable estate can be created, rather than needing to treat each asset individually.

The use of funds can be utilized to take care of your final expenses, to fund a contribution to a preferred charity, or for the expressed purpose of creating a family legacy. For any of these causes, a whole or term life policy is a superior choice to make these outcomes realities for seniors.

A reasonable amount of time should be spent to evaluate which type of life insurance is the best vehicle to use in achieving your objectives and wishes. Additionally, your risk tolerance, income, total assets, expenses and mortality rate are all factors that need to be considered when making a decision about your best options for life insurance as a senior.

Always Weigh the Benefits and Costs of Life Insurance for Seniors

It is always to your benefit to review several rate quotes and plans from selected insurers before deciding. If you are already covered by a life insurance policy, discuss your options with them before doing business with another company or setting up another policy.

Talk candidly with a representative about how you may be able to increase or modify your existing coverage. It is possible they may offer to furnish the additional coverage without a medical exam or for only a small premium. Talk with trusted friends and family members to gain insights about the kinds of policies they have.

You can obtain firsthand information about the kinds of services offered by other companies this way. It is crucial to gain good information about other companies because all life insurance companies do not have acceptable reputations. Some companies will be more senior-friendly than others.

Check the references of the companies you are considering and base your choice on good information. Consider becoming a member of a senior group or organization that can assist you with great recommendations about these choices. Some of these organizations and groups offer life insurance plans for their membership group and offer fantastic savings on all kinds of life insurance policies.

Getting Travel Insurance for Your Next Trip

By Nancy Parode. Senior Travel Expert

Nancy Parode’s travel and cultural articles have appeared in print magazines, such as Military Spouse and Northern Virginia. and on several websites, including Sixty and Me, IntoWine.com, The World I Online and NotForTourists.com. Nancy also blogged about military life for HometownAnnapolis.com, the website of Annapolis, Maryland’s The Capital newspaper. Tripping.com named Nancy’s Senior Travel blog here at About.com a Top Travel Blog in the Senior Travel category, and About.com’s Senior Travel website made Discover Corps ‘ list of Best Baby Boomer Travel Sites for 2105.

Nancy has been featured on NPR affiliate WRVO Public Media’s “Take Care” radio show and BlogTalkRadio’s “Transformed Travel” show. She has been interviewed by The New York Times’ Frugal Travel writer Seth Kugel, SixtyandMe.com’s Margaret Manning, The Amateur Traveler’s Chris Christensen and consumer advocate Christopher Elliott.

Consider these situations:

  • You fall and break your leg while visiting Croatia. You must fly home, yet cannot bend your left knee.
  • Two days before you are due to fly to New Zealand, you come down with this year’s strain of influenza.
  • Your cruise ship cannot leave on time because a hurricane is bearing down on your departure city.

If you buy the right kind of travel insurance before your trip starts, you can recover the cost of your canceled trip or the extra expense of flying home while disabled.

Consider purchasing travel insurance to prevent unexpected problems from ruining your dream vacation.

Although some travel experts and even Consumer Reports claim that travel insurance isn’t worth the money, seniors should research this issue carefully for several reasons:

  • If your only medical insurance is Medicare or Medicaid and you plan to travel to another country, consider purchasing travel insurance. Medicare only pays for expenses incurred within the United States. If you should get sick or become injured while abroad, you will be expected to pay for your medical care up front, and emergency medical evacuation costs thousands of dollars.
  • If you are insured through an HMO, check to see if you can get emergency medical care outside of the HMO’s service area, and find out if a deductible applies. Some HMO’s will not cover out-of-region or overseas medical expenses. Travel insurance could be a good way to temporarily add to your health coverage if your HMO’s service area is limited.
  • If you book a trip or cruise and must prepay, you may face a penalty from your tour agency or cruise line if you need to cancel your trip. This penalty may be more than the cost of trip cancellation insurance. If so, trip cancellation insurance could protect you from a larger loss.

  • If you travel often, consider an annual membership in an emergency evacuation program, such as MedJet. For a few hundred dollars per year, you’ll receive emergency medical transportation to your chosen hospital if you should get sick or sustain an injury.

Types of Travel Insurance

Shopping for travel insurance can be confusing. There are many types of travel insurance plans; some cover only a particular group of losses, while others are comprehensive policies.

According to the U. S. Travel Insurance Association (UStiA), there are three basic kinds of travel insurance coverage:

  • Trip cancellation insurance. This type of policy covers the cost of your airfare and other prepaid expenses if you need to cancel your trip. Trip cancellation insurance will reimburse you if you cannot make your trip because you or a family member becomes ill or if weather problems prevent you from traveling. It will also reimburse you for lost luggage. Some policies also cover financial default of your travel supplier.
  • Emergency medical coverage. This pays for medical care and the cost of emergency return travel. This coverage is especially useful for seniors because it pays for medical expenses incurred outside of your home country.
  • 24-hour telephone assistance. This coverage provides travelers with an easy way to locate doctors and get emergency help, and is especially helpful if you plan to travel to an area where English is not a common language.

How to Shop for Travel Insurance

Here are some tips for choosing a travel insurance policy.

  • Purchase travel insurance through your travel agent. A good travel agency will have working relationships with reputable travel insurance providers and will offer various types of policies.
  • Call your regular insurance agent and ask if s/he sells travel insurance.
  • Contact the U. S. Travel Insurance Association, the Travel Health Insurance Association of Canada or a similar trade association in your home country. Ask for a list of travel insurance agents in your area. These professional associations also provide travel insurance information.
  • Ask around. If you participate in online discussion groups, such as AARP’s message boards, you can post a question about travel insurance and read about other travelers’ experiences. Discuss your travel plans with friends and ask if they have purchased travel insurance. Do some online research – for example, do a search on the name of a travel insurance company – to see if other travelers have reported problems.
  • Use an online insurance comparison site, such as InsureMyTrip.com. SquareMouth.com. or WorldTravelCenter.com to help you research coverage and costs.
  • Look for a policy that covers pre-existing conditions ; some don’t. Others will cover pre-existing conditions only if you purchase your policy within a specified time period after paying your trip deposit.
  • If you are taking a sports-related or adventure trip, look for a policy that covers sports-related injuries. Many travel insurance policies won’t pay for “high adventure” injuries.
  • Read the entire policy. Don t rely on someone else s description of coverage. If you don t understand what s covered and what s not, ask questions before you buy.
  • While travel insurance isn’t cheap – it can add up to as much as ten percent of your total trip cost – it can give you peace of mind and provide financial assistance if the worst should happen.

With the success and positive feedback from both residents and families, we began receiving requests to manage and/or build facilities from other organizations outside the metro Denver area.

1987: Aging in Place leads to Assisted Living. It became apparent that as many of the residents in these two initial properties were getting older and they needed additional services. SHO began creating assisted living residences which were licensed by the State and certified to accept residents receiving Medicaid.

1985: Downtown Denver Inc. Award of Merit

1979: Ecumenical Housing is created. Ecumenical Housing was a community effort developed to serve elderly and disabled people being displaced from their homes in downtown Denver due to urban renewal. New office towers were quickly dislocating people who had resided in affordably priced hotels and boarding homes. The first two acquisitions to respond to this need were the Olin Apartments and The Barth Hotel.

    Senior Travel Insurance (over 65) #germany #travel

    #travel insurance quote

    Senior Travel Insurance (over 65)

Travel can be a risky venture for those over 65, over 70, and even over 75, because they are slightly more fragile than your average healthy 20-year-old. Seniors with medical conditions and even those with no health conditions need the right senior travel insurance coverage to protect them from financial losses.

What are the risks for travelers over 65?

Some of the things that can go wrong for senior travelers include the following:

    • A pre-existing condition reoccurs simply by living longer, you are more likely to have a pre-existing medical condition. Should your condition reoccur while you are traveling, your medical coverage will be invalid unless you have informed the travel insurance company of the condition and purchased the pre-existing condition waiver.
    • You experience a medical emergency travel involves all kinds of new experiences: strange foods, foreign climates, and different surroundings. If you get ill or are injured on your trip, how will you arrange for emergency medical transportation in an unfamiliar region?
    • Your tour is canceled travel suppliers including cruises, tours, and rentals may have financial problems you don’t know about ahead of time. If they cease operations, how will you recover the money you paid them?
    • You have to be evacuated medical evacuations are highly expensive. If you are traveling in a region where the local medical facilities cannot adequately treat your condition, how will you arrange and pay for an emergency evacuation to a qualified medical hospital? After you are treated, how will you then get back home?
    • Your luggage is stolen thieves are highly resourceful and can steal luggage right out from under your nose. If you have important items even those medications packed in your carry-on bag how will you replace them and continue your trip?
    • You need help or advice anytime you are traveling in a new place, you could be in a situation where you need travel advice or emergency assistance. You may even need help communicating in a foreign language. If you need travel advice, legal advice, or foreign language assistance, who can you call?

What coverage do you need as a senior traveler?

While the following is not an exhaustive list of all the coverages available with travel insurance plans. it describes those that are most useful to senior travelers.

    • Medical coverage provides for emergency medical and dental care in the case of a sudden illness or injury on your trip. (Review the details of medical/dental coverage .)
    • Pre-existing medical condition coverage provides protection against high medical costs that result from a recurring condition. (Review the details of pre-existing condition coverage .)
    • Evacuation coverage arranges and pays for medically necessary evacuations or for the repatriation of a traveler’s remains. This coverage can also help a patient get home after they have been treated. (Review the details for evacuation and repatriation coverage .)
    • Baggage coverage provides replacement value for items that are lost, stolen, or destroyed on your trip, including the bag itself. (Review the details for baggage coverage .)
    • Financial default coverage provides reimbursement for payments made to a travel supplier that completely ceases operations due to financial default or bankruptcy. (Review the details of financial default coverage .)

When should you buy your senior travel insurance?

When you purchase your travel insurance may be just as important as why you purchase it.

Remember that all travel insurance companies offer a free look period with a refund if you decide the plan is not what you need.

Where should you buy your senior travel insurance?

We recommend purchasing your travel insurance directly from a third-party company for a number of reasons.

Very briefly, you’ll have more choices and options in your travel insurance plan if you purchase from a third-party company using a comparison tool .

How can you be sure your travel insurance coverage is adequate?

Hospice offers medical care toward a different goal: Maintaining or improving the quality of life for someone whose illness, disease or condition is unlikely to be cured. Each patient’s individualized care plan is updated as needed to address the physical, emotional and spiritual pain that often accompanies terminal illness. Hospice care also offers practical support for the caregiver(s) during the illness and grief support after the death. Hospice is something more that is available to the patient and the entire family when curative measures have been exhausted and life prognosis is 6 months or less.

    History of Hospice

In Western society, the concept of hospice has been evolving in Europe since the 11th century. Hospice were places of hospitality for the sick, wounded or dying, as well as those for travelers and pilgrims. The modern concept of hospice, includes palliative care for the incurably ill given in such institutions as hospitals or nursing homes. but also care provided to those who would rather spend their last months and days of life in their own homes.

It began to emerge in the 17th century, but many of the foundational principles by which modern hospice services operate were pioneered in the 1950s by Dame Cicely Saunders. when she opened St. Christopher’s Hospice in 1967. St. Christopher’s Hospice in London emphasized the multi-disciplinary approach to caring for the dying, the regular use of opioids to control physical pain and careful attention to social, spiritual and psychological suffering in patients and families.

Within the United States. the term is largely defined by the practices of the Medicare system and other health insurance providers, which make hospice care available, either in an inpatient facility or at the patient’s home, to patients with a terminal prognosis who are medically certified at hospice onset to have less than six months to live.

Hospice care also involves assistance for patients’ families to help them cope with what is happening and provide care and support to keep the patient at home.

In 1969, Elisabeth wrote On Death and Dying. coining the 5 stages of death: Shock/Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression and Acceptance.

    Discounts on Senior Rail Passes

    UK and Europe Senior Deals

Why is train travel so popular with seniors? There are several ways to answer this question:

    • Train travel is less stressful
    • No early flight check-ins
    • Avoid fatigue from driving long distances – or driving in unfamiliar surroundings
    • Comfortable and civilized accommodations
    • Great discounts for seniors

In addition, traveling with a rail pass has a number of great benefits; from the breathtaking scenic views, the convenience of arriving in city centers, the overall fast and frequent service, the flexibility it provides for any itinerary and its environmentally friendly advantages.

    British Rail Senior Passes

Seniors, 60 years or older, visiting the UK can save with BritRail’s Senior Discount, receiving approximately 15% off the First Class adult fare on a:

A BritRail FlexiPass and BritRail Consecutive Pass allow for unlimited train travel in England, Scotland and Wales, while a BritRail England FlexiPass or BritRail England Consecutive Pass is best if your focus falls on England, the heart of Britain, home to nine distinct regions including London.

Seniors can also bring the grandkids along thanks to BritRail’s Family Discount, as one child between the ages of 5 and 15 travels free when accompanying senior BritRail pass holders. Additional kids get up to 50% off the regular adult rate and children under 5 travel free and do not need a ticket.

Seniors will especially love first class seating, as it features larger seats, picture windows, more space for both passengers and baggage and is usually less crowded. On many routes First Class offers extras, including free tea and coffee. Some routes even offer free snacks and newspapers. Certain long haul routes have table or buffet services. First Class is always at the London end of the platform which eliminates any long walk at the Londonterminal! Most commuter routes radiating from the big cities have First Class accommodations and avoiding the crowd is especially noticeable on trains during busy rush hour.

    Europe Senior Rail Passes

Only a few select countries offer senior rail pass fares, but several passes offer a ‘Saver’ fare for groups of 2 to 5 people, where each passenger receives up to 15% off on the normal adult price. Saver passes are often offered in first or second class but this ultimately depends on the pass chosen.

The following are senior rail pass options for non-European residents:

Eurail Ireland : Seniors 60 years or older can purchase a Eurail Ireland Pass in first or second class and receive a discount on the adult fare. That’s an approximate savings of 15% of the adult fare in first or second class!
