Millions of people make the famous New York to London flight annually. It’s a journey of 3,459 miles, and one that now takes a mere six hours when tail winds are in your favor.

But over the past few years, there seems to have been a focus on improving the flying experience for those in First or Business class on long flights. Those of us who usually sit at the back of the plane have noticed our seats getting tighter, and the economy cabin feeling more cramped, all to make the cabins at the front of the plane more spacious.

But not anymore. Enter the Boeing 787 Dreamliner for Virgin Atlantic.

This plane has been in service for other airlines for a couple of years, but this week, Virgin launched its New York to London route—and hopes to have 21 of these planes in service by 2018. But the thing that makes Virgin’s version of this spectacular vessel different is where they’ve placed a lot of their focus: the Economy cabin.

Don’t get me wrong. The Upper Class cabin is still impeccable. But here are five reasons why the Virgin Atlantic Dreamliner, nicknamed “Dream Jeannie,” may now be the best way to fly transatlantic….in economy.

1. There’s more space.

The Dreamliner was built with more space in mind. Everything looks and feels bigger. The cabin height is several feet higher than it is on other planes, due to an impressive vaulted ceiling. The aisles are wider. The overhead bins are larger, but placed higher up to avoid those awkward head-banging incidents that anyone over 5’ 5” will have certainly experienced. The seats are designed to be thinner, meaning they take up less room, providing several inches more leg room. Plus, the seats pitch back further for a much more comfortable experience. Even the toilets feel bigger. I swear, there’s enough room to swing a cat in there, which is a serious rarity in the usually-coffin-like airplane bathrooms. Virgin has managed to provide passengers with an innovative Economy cabin that feels spacious and airy, resulting in a much more comfortable journey.

2. There’s great wireless.

People are very attached to their mobile technology, and Virgin has taken note. The plane is fully wired for wireless services that even work when you are flying over the middle of the Atlantic. For around $20, you can stay connected to the outside world for the duration of the flight, meaning you can update your Facebook status and check your email from 38,000 feet.

To coincide with the Dreamliner launch, Virgin even announced the #SkyhighSelfie, offering passengers the opportunity to update their Facebooks from the air, free of charge.

And to make sure that you are never left short when it comes to your battery life, every single seat on the plane has power access via USB, so you can charge your phone or tablet during the journey.

3. There’s mood lighting. Yes, mood lighting.

Jetlag sucks. And it has the potential to ruin your trip. Whether you travel for business or pleasure, being able to adjust to the new time zone is vital to your overall experience. As any frequent traveler knows, the best way to trick your circadian clock—the fancy term for your internal body clock—is through light therapy, where you trick your body into thinking it’s a different time by exposing it to light at specific times.

Sound complicated? Thanks to Virgin Atlantic, it won’t be.

The new Dreamliner has been outfitted with a revolutionary new ambient mood lighting system throughout the main cabin, designed to help passengers adjust to the changing timezones—and that’s because it changes color throughout the flight. The light begins at a soft “rose champagne” color as people board, to help them de-stress and relax. It then changes into “purple haze” to make people feel comfortable and cozy, before transitioning to “amber warmth,” which is designed to feel like candlelight for when people are dining. Lastly, it morphs into “silver moonlight” to help people fall asleep.

There is then an eight-minute “sunrise” sequence, too, designed to gradually wake people up in the new time zone. Not only does it work, but it looks beautiful and completely changes the aesthetic inside the cabin.

4. It’s cleaner, quieter, and more efficient.

For those of you worried about your carbon footprint, this plane provides quite the feel-good factor. Not only is it 60% quieter than other aircrafts of the same size, it is a lot more fuel efficient, burning approximately 20% less fuel than similarly sized planes.

The advanced air filtration system also means that the air you breathe in the cabin is a lot cleaner. This is an amazing fact for those of us who get a bit squeamish about the thought of all the germs swimming around in the air. This system also helps increase the humidity on board. Considering that most planes in flight are more arid than a desert, this has a huge impact on everyone’s overall health and comfort during the journey.

5. It’s all about the little things.

There are a ton of new little touches on this plane that you will not see on others. For instance, there are full-length mirrors in the bathrooms, which not only make them feel a lot more spacious, but actually serve a purpose, allowing passengers to give themselves full-length once-overs after a long, disheveled journey.

When you first board the plane, crew members hand out dinner menus, a service that you may only expect in Upper Class. This makes everyone on board feel special.

And another unique innovation is the auto tint windows, which no longer have a shutter. Instead, you just push a button, and they gradually darken. It’s all very futuristic.

Lastly, the staff is incredible. While this isn’t specific to this particular plane, it is certainly a major selling point of this airline in general. Crew members are dynamic, friendly, and extremely accommodating. It is clear that Virgin Atlantic hires staff members who love their jobs, and genuinely want to ensure that the passengers on board have an enjoyable experience.

All these changes combined make a massive difference to the overall experience of flying in the Economy cabin on a long flight. Virgin’s launch of this plane and its new route is going to change the way airlines compete for business and loyalty. They are showing that they care about every passenger on board, not just the ones paying more for their fancy seats.

    Exams sessions at the UF/IFAS Hillsborough Extension Office are posted on the ProHort calendar of events . In 2016, exam sessions are the second Tuesday of each month. Sessions begin at 9:00 am and 11:00 am. Advanced registration is required. Exams are administered on computer and results are available on exam completion. You must provide a valid, current form of state identification to verify your identity. Cell/Smart phones are not permitted in the exam area.

    The E-Gov Travel Service (ETS) is a governmentwide, web-based, world-class travel management service. This streamlined service continually applies commercial best practices to realize travel efficiencies and deliver a transparent, accountable, and sustainable service that yields exceptional customer satisfaction.

    ETS has unified over 80 Executive Branch agencies to a common, secure, web-based, automated service. It eliminated over 250 disparate, non-web based and paper-driven systems; leveraged the government’s purchasing power; increased online adoption; reduced reimbursement cycle time; and significantly reduced vendor costs.

    The ETS program is currently operating in its second contract period – ETS2, which includes a 3-year base period and three 4-year option periods through June 3, 2027. The legacy ETS transition will run through November 11, 2015. At that time, all customer agencies will be transitioned to ETS2.

    ETS2 enables the government to further consolidate travel services, platforms, and channels, improve leverage of government travel spending, reduce waste, and increase transparency for improved accountability. This directly aligns and supports the Office of Management and Budget Memo M-12-12 regarding Promoting Efficient Spending to Support Agency Operations with respect to travel.

    I am extremely disappointed in the service I received from

    I booked a room at the Ramada Inn and Suites Nashville at the stadium downtown through for a two night room,

    Several weeks before my trip, I called the Ramada to confirm my reservation. The Ramada does not have me registered. After a follow up call to, they assured me that my reservation was booked and that sometimes the hotels will not confirm until a week or two before. I called again several times including two days before my departure. Ramada was still not confirmed, in fact, they told me that the hotel is sold out. I continued to have several exasperating talks with assuring me that I will have a room, but still the room was not confirmed. This is a serious issue since I already paid for this room.

    Twenty-four hours before I left for my trip, I spoke to again. They confirmed that the Ramada was indeed sold out and they have a room for me 5 miles away. They couldn t get find anything closer because it was a busy weekend and that there must be an event going on. Considering I had no car and planned to stay in downtown Nashville and walk everywhere, this is unacceptable and I would never have gone on this trip if I had to stay five miles away. I was also told on the phone by that if they are unable confirm your hotel, will find you a nearby location at the same star hotel or better. Five miles away is not a nearby location. Less than 24 hours before my trip, was able to rebook my room at the Ramada.

    I find this behavior in an online travel booking site completely unacceptable and cannot believe you run a business this way.

    First off – BE CAREFUL as there are dozens of agencies called China Travel Service so don t get confused. The company I am reviewing is China Travel Services International based in San Francisco, CA (also in Los Angeles. New York and Beijing ) and their website is (so you don t get confused).

    After searching the Internet and talking to local travel agents, we decided to go with CTSI and worked with Alex Wang in the SF office.

    We read some horror stories about poor quality food, hotels, airlines and high-pressure sales at factory stores so were obviously concerned when we booked, especially given CTSI was quite a bit cheaper then the other online travel agencies.

    Well, we just completed a 21+ day tour from SF to Beijing, Shanghai. Xian, Guilin, Yangshuo, Hangzhou, a cruise on the Yangtze River /Three Gorges. Hong Kong and a custom side trip to Canton.

    Here s are feedback on each of the important criteria:

    Itinerary: The itinerary was perfectly planned, not only allowing us to visit a variety of cities/provinces, but also experiencing the broad spectrum of local cultures throughout China. We experienced the busy cities of Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong, but also relaxed in Hangzhou, Yangshuo and of course the cruise on the Yangtze River – none of which we would have enjoyed if not recommended by your company. We originally had concerns with 21 packed days of travel (esp. with young children and seniors with us) but everything down to the daily itinerary (including shows/entertainment) was perfectly orchestrated.

    Food/Accommodations: This is the area we were most concerned with because of reviews on the Internet but was NEVER a problem on our tour. EVERY meal was colorfully prepared in local tradition and served in banquet style, dish after dish! Accommodations were all first class – both clean and functional and centrally located. Even the domestic and international flights were as good if not better than domestic flights in the US.

    Local/National Tour guides: The local and national CTSI tour guides were what really transformed a 21-day tour into a memorable experience of a lifetime. They were ALWAYS there to educate us on the local sights and customs, assist us in every aspect of our stay, and constantly making us laugh. We especially want to thank David (Hangqing) Huang our national guide in Beijing/Xian/Guilin/Shanghai who was more like an ambassador to us than a tour guide and Andy in Guilin who “joined” our family during our stay.

    Price Value: We searched every online and offline travel company specializing in China Travel (many with the similar names) but narrowed down to CTSI/Intertrips. We were a bit concerned that we would be getting less quality than other more expensive tours, but upon our return, now know we just got the best value!

    Caveats: So not to paint our travel as perfect (although darn close) some things to consider. Food was high quality and plentiful (banquet style – dish after dish) but contains more oil and less salt than Chinese food we have in US. As you get closer to Hong Kong, you will find food more similar to that in US. We did take at least one break from Chinese food (25 days!!) and ate at local Mc Donalds which had a more diverse menu than US!

    Shopping is great everywhere but sales people can be aggressive and be prepared to negotiate. Weather was hot and humid, but we survived.

    We found the people very nice and courteous (except at markets and trains) and surprisingly very clean – more so than Chinatowns in the US.

    We considered booking our own itinerary, but the cost was not only more expensive, but the language barrier and lack of experience would have been a big mistake.
