Accommodation in Singapore

Spoilt for choice in the city-state

Singapore is a relatively young nation; a fact reflected in the shimmering new steel skyscrapers rising up around the fringes of Marina Bay Sands on a regular basis. Singapore accommodation ranges from the cheap and cheerful hostels around Clarke Bay to the burgeoning boutique hotel scene flourishing around Chinatown and the old-world charm of the Colonial District.

A global financial hub, this upwardly mobile Asian Tiger offers plenty in the way of attractive business accommodation. Many are located in close proximity to the famous Orchard Road shopping and entertainment district, such as the popular Four Seasons Singapore and the expansive Shangri-La Hotel.

Celebrate Singapore’s colonial charm

A former British Straits Settlement, Singapore retains much of its colonial charm and the picturesque Colonial District is a mainstay of Singaporean tourism. Boasting much of the city’s finest colonial architecture including the famous Cavenagh Bridge and Singapore’s oldest extant government building, the Arts House the Colonial District is also one of the city’s most popular places to stay.

Raffles is undoubtedly Singapore’s most famous hotel and the celebrated home of the Singapore Sling still exudes a raffish colonial air. This sprawling luxury hotel occupies a prime position in the heart of the Colonial District, though it’s far from Singapore’s only old-world accommodation. The Carlton Hotel and Rendezvous Hotel are both popular options for visitors eager to experience Singapore’s colonial past.

Lay back in the lap of luxury

Singapore’s luxury hotels aren’t limited to the 19th Century mansions dotted throughout the Colonial District. As one of the powerhouses of the Asian economy, the Lion City possesses its fair share of luxury accommodation, with many of the city’s finest hotels boasting impressive water views of this island state.

The Fullerton Bay Hotel remains a popular 5-star favourite for its opulent rooms and commanding views over Marina Bay. Across the bay is the equally lavish Mandarin Oriental, renowned for the stunning panoramas it offers from its equally resplendent rooms. The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Hyatt and InterContinental are also resident in the city, meaning there’s no shortage of luxury accommodation available if you’re looking to splurge.

As one of the busiest trade centers in the world, the Southeast Asian city-state attracts a medley of culture, customs and cuisines.

Since its beginnings as a British trade colony in the early 19th century, Singapore has developed into one of the world’s busiest and most fascinating cities. Singapore is a cultural melting pot which presents a modern, cosmopolitan feel but maintains well-preserved traditions from its varied inhabitants.

Located almost on the equator, Singapore has a steamy tropical climate.

Despite being one of the most densely populated cities in the world, around half of the country is covered in parks. Escape the rush of the city at the Singapore Botanic Gardens or visit the sheltered beaches and coastal promenades at the East Coast Park. Marvel at the giant plant-filled domes and Supertrees at the incredible Gardens by the Bay. More superb gardens can be seen at the world-class Jurong Bird Park and the Singapore Zoo.

Experience the mix of cultures in fascinating enclaves throughout the city. Make your way to one of the the largest Chinatowns in the world and visit the Chinatown Heritage Center. Sample traditional curries in Little India or visit the mosques, carpetshops and tailors of the Arab Street District. Grab a bite to eat, or browse the hip stores along Haji Lane. immediately parallel to Arab Street.

Experience the Singapore of old with a bumboat ride to Pulau Ubin. Rent a bicycle at the tiny village and explore the wetlands and diverse habitats along the dirt road that circles the island.

Other parts of the city offer a cosmopolitan experience comparable to the most modern cities on earth. Orchard Road is Singapore’s most famous stretch of retail and has more shopping than anyone could reasonably explore in a day. Take a cable car across to Sentosa Island and explore a whole island of theme parks and attractions. While on Sentosa. discover the history of some of the battles which were turning points in World War II at Fort Siloso.

After exploring the city by day, head over to Clarke Quay or Boat Quay for fantastic dining and modern nightlife to take you into the early morning hours.

Singapore is served by Changi Airport, one of the largest airports in Asia. Once you re in its easy to get around with efficient and affordable public transportation and taxis.

How to pick the Right Travel Insurance

by GoingPlaces.sg

Source:Fotolia

To travel worry-free, it is best to buy a travel insurance before you hop onto a plane. But sourcing for an affordable policy can be time consuming especially when you need to compare the benefit limits of each travel insurance. Singapore has many travel insurance plans, thus this makes the comparison even more tedious.

3 Factors to Decide on the Right Travel Insurance Plan

So, I always adhere to the following three principles to decide the best insurance for my travel plans:

1) Destinations that are expensive, thus, medical costs is deemed to be expensive too when I require any medical assistance there. A good example will be Japan and USA.

2) Destinations that I am likely to be involved in some active activities like hiking, white-water rafting and etc, having a travel insurance plan will definitely help to ease some unnecessary worries.

3) Destinations that are highly probable of losing or delaying baggage or theft, a travel insurance that compensates for losing of personal belongings definitely helps to melt off some annoyance when such nasty thing happens.

Travel Insurance Companies in Singapore

When it is decided that I need a travel insurance plan, to maximize every dollar, I will do what most travellers would do google for the cheapest travel insurance deals online. There are many travel insurance companies in town such as:

When picking the right travel insurance for myself, I pay more attention on the benefits coverage/limits on flight delay, trip postponement, trip cancellation, as these are most likely reasons to make a claim .

    www.airfares.com.sg – MISA TRAVEL

    Singapore

    Aug 23, 2012, 10:15 PM

I booked a ticket with MISA TRAVEL last Saturday, 18/08/2012, departing on 11/02/2013 from Singapore to Shanghai. I bought it 7 months earlier thinking that it would save me a sum because February is the Chinese New Year, with addition more seat inventories available.

Subsequently, MISA TRAVEL contacted me stating that there was a dispute with my name on the E-ticket and it would take a few days for MISA TRAVEL to resolve it with the relevant airline. (MISA TRAVEL s excuse was because it was NATAS and the relevant airline do not have time to entertain the dispute which I find it amusing because dont tell me that the airline has only a certain number of manning and that all of them all in NATAS?)

That said, MISA TRAVEL weblink was not precise in stating that I should include the full name in my passport. and one would think that the weblink is just a database to store customers bio for future reference. Also, the E-ticket has not been issued to me yet.

Further to that, I went into MISA TRAVEL booking system and realised that booking it a few days later, to be precise, on the 23 Aug 2012, a mere 5 days apart could result in me saving a good $100SGD (from $628.80SGD to $522.80), with all being the same (same flight time, same flight dates and same ticket class).

I quickly emailed MISA TRAVEL to express my disppointment but MISA TRAVEL absurb reply was that air tickets are that similiar of buying commodities and that airline tickets flactuate due to seat inventories variances and there is nothing they could do.

I would like to question on why airlines website prices do not flactuate as such except for periodical promotions? In addition I am booking the tickets way in advance and I do not understand that with other cancellations and such, ticket prices dropped so drastically so to pull in the customers for a 7 months more flight departure?

I am pondering on the business ethics of MISA TRAVEL, having increasing and decreasing the prices of the airtickets randomly with no promotions rolled out?

    BAD travel Agent

Do NOT book from SUPER TRAVELS! I book a tour with them and paid $1000 for 2 to Perth only to be told that they cannot find hotels for me. I told them to find any hotels and say I don t mind topping up the money. They told me to wait for 5 days and after I called after 5 days, they ask me to wait another few days! It is like less than a month to my tour date. I asked for a refund and I was told to wait for 2 weeks. There is always a penalty when a customer pull out of a tour booking and that penalty is based on the number of days to the tour date, then why is that tour agencies can get away with it when they have accepted a booking by a customer and yet not deliver it when it is less than a month to the tour date?

Super Travel is ONLY good for booking of Coach to KL. THAT ALL

Going to perth? U should be able to plan the whole trip urself, using the ever efficient Internet Portal.

S$1000 for 2? That s for 4day 3nite? And does it cover any tours? Which month would that be for? If it covers Tours During a Peak Period, that could explain why Super Travel cannot book any Hotel for U, cos they prolly under quote U ^___^.

The last time I did most of Perth (Self-Planned) 7Day 6 Nite, I spend only S$1250 travelling on SQ (slightly off peak with Airticket + Hotel + Guided Tour == All booked separately). Aussie is very easy, U dun even need those travel agency to do the booking nowadays.

In ur case, if U have not manage to get Super to refund U in Full, I would advise U to make a report with NATAS, so that if Super were to penalise U later for cancellation, U got a backup for it is their inability to deliver their service with the constant delay, which could have let U replan the whole trip.

    Warning – MISA TRavel airfares.com.sg

I have just had the misfortune of using the www.airfares.com.sg to book some flights. I had expected the same easy and quick service of websites such as webjet.com.au, where you choose your flight, book and then pay all in one easy to follow process, all in one sitting; a confirmation and e-ticket being emailed immediately.

Not so! With airfares.com.sg, there is an almost comical, Monty Pythonesque stream of phone calls, emails, confirmations, more confirmations, requests to pay (but with nowhere on their website to pay) etc etc. Be warned – they say you can pay online , but when you read the instructions they want you to scan in various documents, email them to the agent, and so forth. It is like a pre-internet procedure. You can make a direct transfer to their bank account, but they ask you to email or call them when you have done this. They were unable to explain to me how they would know it was my money and for which booking.

I started this booking yesterday and still don t have an e-ticket! It is like being in a time warp!

Essentially this is a website of a travel agent that does everything the old fashioned way. It is not a true online booking and payment service. Prices are good, but it was far less convenient than walking into a travel agent with a credit card or cheque book.

    www.airfares.com.sg – MISA TRAVEL

Singapore Airlines flight from U.S. lands safely amid bomb threat

SINGAPORE Singapore Airlines said on Sunday there was a bomb threat to one of its flights which originated from San Francisco and landed safely at Singapore’s Changi Airport on Sunday.

The airline, in a statement, did not provide any details of how the threat came to light or what action was taken to ensure the flight’s safety. It said the matter had been referred to the authorities.

“We regret we are unable to provide details as it concerns security,” the airline statement said.

Flight SQ001 landed safely at about noon Singapore time (0400 GMT), but disembarkation was delayed until around 1.30 pm, state-owned Channel NewsAsia reported.

Singapore police said in a statement they had conducted security checks and nothing suspicious was found on the plane or among its passengers.

The incident came as a Turkish Airlines flight bound for Turkey from New York was diverted to Halifax, Canada, after a bomb threat, Canadian police said on Sunday.

Security officials have been on high alert since Islamic State militants claimed responsibility for attacks this month in Paris that killed 130 people.

One of two administrative regions in China, Hong Kong is a city state known for its glittering city skyline and expansive harbour. Much like its famous assets, Hong Kong is commonly referred to as ‘where east meets west,’ a futuristic city that still values its age old traditions. At dawn you could easily find party goers heading home from the latest techno club wandering past a peaceful Tai Chi class. It’s this unique clash and the city’s endless possibilities that make Hong Kong such a popular tourist destination. Whether here to shop and splurge or to learn more about the city’s unique culture, or both, a holiday in Hong Kong is guaranteed to leave you wanting more.

    Hong Kong’s Harbour

Hong Kong’s unique culture is the result of historic British Rule and Chinese influence. Today the city’s range of cultures continues to expand as expats from around the world base themselves in Hong Kong. In the business world, Hong Kong is a valued meeting point between Asia and the rest of the globe and is also an important hub for trade. As a result, Hong Kong accommodation is plentiful, with numerous luxury hotels making their mark on the city skyline. The city state is also one of the most densely populated places in the world. Despite such crowds, Hong Kong is also famed for being incredibly organised, clean and efficient.

More than just spectacular city views though, Hong Kong is a city full of unique experiences. The exotic range of food alone will easily keep your mind occupied. Then there are the markets full of chatter, rows of designer boutiques and pulsating bars and nightclubs. Away from the hustle and bustle of the streets you will find Hong Kong’s peaceful side, where locals enjoy a quiet moment to themselves in the city’s many tea houses. Experience the diversity of this exotic city on a Hong Kong tour .

Super Travels Pte Ltd? Super NOT FUN!

    Perth, Australia

    02 July 2012, 12:05

I want to warn everyone about a horrible experience I had with Super Travels Pte Ltd.

I have travelled many times with different tour agents in Singapore. It s usually a travel companion deal, 2 of you book into the tour together and share a hotel room etc. For all flight legs, I have always been on the same flight as my fellow tour members, or in the very least, with my travel companion.

But on a recent tour with Super Travels, I was put on a flight of my own. I don t even know why, neither flight was fully booked. And isn t it reasonable to assume that you will be on the same flight as your fellow tour members, or at least your travel companion, especially if as a group you have all been flying together during the tour and the tour leader leads you as a group through the airport to the gate?

What s worse, nobody from Super Travels even bothered to tell me I was not going to be travelling with my travel companion or the other tour members! I was in a foreign country, foreign airport, gates were about to close and I had just realised I was on a separate flight, the gate of which was on the other side of the airport. Imagine how panicked I was! It was a lack of professionalism and care at worst, a lack of common courtesy at best!

At least it happened to me, being an adult capable of speaking fluent English and travelling on my own. What happens if this had happened to a child or something who could not speak English?

When I complained to the company, they seemed to be saying it was your own fault on one hand, but on the other hand offering their sincerest apologies and a $200 voucher. I asked them to instead donate the money to charity. I get a patronising response clearly written by their legal department how they had no legal obligation to donate money to a charity and then because they were still sincere, they would extend their goodwill by continuing to offer me the voucher.

Talk about poor customer service! They say they are sincere, but aren t willing to demonstrate it by donating money to people who need the money more than I need another holiday, even though they are clearly running a profitable business. And they then attempt to capitalise on their error by using the lure of the voucher to convince me to spend more money with their company. Why on earth would I pay $3000+ for a service I am dissatisfied with simply to redeem a mere $200 voucher?

Sighz the business world is ruthless and people just don t seem to have heart anymore!

    www.airfares.com.sg – MISA TRAVEL

    Singapore

    24 August 2012, 10:15

Great Travel Promotions and Getaway Deals with MISA Travel at Travel

Great Travel Promotions and Getaway Deals with MISA Travel at Travel Revolution Fair 2015

Super long days with most of the time spent travelling in the tour bus, lack of flexibility to explore the city on our own, changing hotels everyday – these are reasons why we don’t take up typical tour packages and instead plan our own trips. The prices for such tour packages are however much affordable compared to travelling on our own if you factor in the airfare and accommodation – I guess that’s because the tour agencies have bulk discount rates with the airlines and hotels.

Thus, I was pleasantly surprised with MISA Travel’s brand new Group “GO” Flexi packages which gives you the best of both worlds – ample free time and flexibility to explore the destination on your own and yet enjoy value for money rates for airfares and room. You will still be travelling in a group but will be given time to explore the city before reconvening with the group to continue the tour.

There are great deals in the Taiwan Group “GO” Flexi and each tour participant is given a choice of either a farm stay or free easy shopping in Taipei or theme park fun for 1-2 days of the tour. This is almost unheard of in any other tour packages where there will at most be 5-6 hours given to the tour group for free easy time at a city before being herded back to the bus to rush to the next city.

With MISA Travel’s Group “GO” Flexi, you get to do your favourite activities for a few days before joining the group to do the usual touristy stuff and still enjoy affordable prices for the entire tour package. And with the Travel Revolution Fair 2015, MISA Travel is giving an additional 50% off for the 2 nd traveller for these Taiwan Group “GO” Flexi tour packages !

Another example of MISA TRAVEL Group “GO” Flexi package for travelling to Japan.

For more info on the Group “GO” Flexi, check out MISA Travel’s revamped www.getaways.com.sg website! There are MISA Travellers’ picks for short haul Group “GO” Flexi trips to Bali, Bangkok, Hong Kong as well as long haul ones to New York, London, Auckland!

Even for Free Independent Travellers (FIT) like us, Getaways.com.sg also has a lot to offer e.g. affordable packages for self-drives, theme park visits, mini stays, etc. They have just revamped their website so it is easier to navigate and pick up the best deals for your next trip!

If you are planning for your next holiday for one of the remaining 4 long weekend Singapore holidays. then you should check out the Travel Revolution Fair 2015 held at Marina Bay Sands B2 Expo Halls D F (Booth C19) from 24 to 26 July 2015 to pick up the best travel promotions and deals. MISA Travel is also exhibiting at this travel fair and they are offering a lot of great deals and promotions.

MISA Travel’s SG50 promotion is super attractive – you will pay just $50 for either an additional night or for the 3 rd /4 th pax or for a child to travel. Do note that terms and conditions apply so do check in with the MISA Travel for more details.

While you are at the MISA Travel Booth C19 at the Travel Revolution Fair 2015 at Marina Bay Sands, why not spend a few minutes to take a selfie at their booth and then like and post the selfie on MISA facebook page. Then share the post with your friends and you could be on your way to a holiday stay in Bali! The draw announcement date is on 12 August 2015 so don’t miss out this lucky draw to win a Bali holiday. Terms and conditions apply so check in with the MISA Travel folks while you are at their booth.

Also look out for MISA’s new loyalty program called MISA Travel Lounge. Every booking and activity with MISA Travel will earn the Lounger (this is what MISA Travel call the members) points, which can be used for booking discounts. I don’t think there are such loyalty programmes with other travel agencies so this is quite an innovation and benefits travellers too with opportunities for more discounts for their trips!

Even if you miss the Travel Revolution Fair at Marina Bay Sands this weekend, don’t worry as you can still enjoy the same deals and promotions as above (except the selfie at booth lucky draw) at MISA Travel’s in-house online fair until 31 st July 2015. Just proceed to any of their websites e.g. www.airfares.com.sg. www.getaways.com.sg. www.hotels.com.sg. www.cruises.com.sg for the best deals. If you prefer to talk to someone at MISA Travel face to face to arrange your travel packages, MISA Travel is located at Hong Lim Complex in Chinatown (just a few minutes’ walk from Chinatown MRT station).

    A Great Emporium

Below is the text from the plaque next to this sculpture.

Sir Stamford Raffles wrote in 1819, Our object is not territory but trade; a great commercial emporium. At the heart of the settlement s trade was the Singapore River. Lighter craft crowded the banks of the River along Boat Quay, and merchants had offices and godowns either here or at Commercial Square (Raffles Place). early trade was in the cotton, spieces and other exotic commodities; in the 19th century this shifted to rubber, tin and copra. European traders, like those here, profited from Singapore s trade but it was the Chinese traders, like the towkay holding an abacus, who generated the most wealth.

Providing much needed labour to the trading industry were Chinese and Indian coolies. Chinese coolies came from the southeastern provinces of china, while Indian coolies hailed from South India. The Chinese coolie and towkay in the sculpture are identified by their queue, or pigtail, which the Qing authorities required all Chinese men to wear. When the Qing dynasty ended in 1912, queues were done away with. The Indian coolie wears the customary turban. Life as a coolie was difficult. Coolies lived in cramped and squalid conditions, often with no proper ventilation or sanitation. Many a coolie ended his days in Singapore, alone and penniless, plying the trading boats that crowded the Singapore River.

Growing hand-in-hand with trade was the finance industry. The sculpture to the right encapsulates the dramatic changes that the finance industry has undergone: from traditional moneylenders to today s stock market dealers.

The topics addressed include reasoning principles for types, rewriting, program semantics, and structuring of logical systems.

Street scene 街景 outside Sogo 百货, Taipei City 台北市

These shots, including those at Ximending, were taken on the night after my visit to Yangmingshan Shihlin Night Market.

My original plan was to visit Pacific Sogo immediately after Yangminshan (see more info below). However, I had missed Shihlin Night Market on Sunday due to fatigue pain in the foot. Not wanting to fly off the next day with regrets that I d missed the famous night market, I braced myself despite my tiredness.

After much food walking about in the rain with my impromptu, I was yet again tempted to return early to my hotel. However, my impromptu tour guide informed me about Sogo s 20% sales. Since it was still early evening, I said goodbye to my guide (she was initially contemplating going with me too) headed off to Pacific Sogo.

Pacific Sogo turned out a little disappointing though. It was so crowded that I lost the mood to shop but quickly made my way out to the entrance where I took these few shots of the buildings street scene.

I did not get t try the German pork recommended by Monica. Had wanted to try it as I have seen it in a Taiwanese variety show.

My German pork meal Blackforest cake at Blackforest, Germany, were terribly disappointing. After a long wait, we were served hard dry pork with wet lumpy rice soagy fries. I tried to eat the pork nevertheless while some others gave it a pass tried to fill their stomach with the fries. My friend did not even want to eat the cold lumpy rice dipped the fries in lots of ketcup to compensate the bland taste. The Blackforest cake looked lifeless the taste was no better than those cheap ones found in neighbourhood bakeries in Sinagpore.

However, I still believed that this authentic pork dish is tasty despite the disappointing experience at the sourvenir cum cafe arranged by our CTC tour agent. T, I had badly wanted to try this famous dish again after seeing the Taiwanese gourmet programme. However, after my round at Shihlin Market, my stomach simply had no more room for it though I knew I could probably not taste this dish at that kind of price in Singapore. Hopefully, I can get to try this authentic dish one day.

    Recommended by Monica:

GERMAN PORK NT$200 (She also recommended their roasted chicken set with tortilla (Level 2 of DingGuaGua fried Chicken)

My original plan for Pacific Sogo:

(Part 1) was not possible as it wasn t weekend that day)

    1) Sogo supermarket try out free Japanese snacks (highly recommended by Monica, a local) buy Taiwanese instant noodles (highly recommended by SG travel blogger)

    2) PACIFIC SOGO DEPARTMENTAL STORE shopping

    3) GERMAN PORK/Roasted Chicken Set Tortilla (Level 2 of DingGuaGua fried Chicken) NT$200 (recommended by Monica)
