Leak Detecting Services

How to Find a Water Leak

Our highly trained engineers at L.D.S. Leak Detection Specialists Ltd. will choose the approriate testing and inspection process specifically chosen to suit your home or commercial business to find the leak.

Our engineers at L.D.S. carry all the latest technology in leakage detection. We have listed the main Leak detection methods and equipment below. Inspection cameras. Protimeter mms damp meter survey kits, pressure gauges both hydraulic and digital and salts diagnostic kits also form part of the L.D.S. engineers equipment.

Leak Detection Methods to Find A Leak

Acoustics
Acoustic profiling uses ground and pipe sensitive microphones to enhance the sound of the leak. This method can help in pinpointing precise leak location.

Correlation
Is a way of finding and pinpointing leaks in water pipes. A leak in a pipe under pressure creates noise that travels through the pipe walls, the surrounding ground and along the contents of the pipe. Correlators are a very accurate sound testing device which are used to identify the acoustic frequency caused when a pipe is leaking. The correlator uses two identical sensors located along the pipe to calculate the leek location by logging the signal delay, sensor distance and the sound velocity.

Tracer Gas
The trace gas, a safe mixture of hydrogen and nitrogen, is introduced into the pipe with the suspected leak. The gas, is the lightest in the atmosphere and is made up of of small molecules. The gas will exit at the leak and make its way to the surface where it is detected using gas sensitive detection pobes.

Thermal Imaging
Thermography is the use of an infrared imaging and measurement camera to see and measure thermal energy emitted from an object. Thermography cameras can identify problem areas that can’t be seen with the naked eye, detecting hidden water leaks. The infrared inspection camera can detect not only hidden water leaks and their origin, but also moisture that cannot be physically reached with moisture meters. Read more

Pipe, Cable and Metal Detection and Tracing
Often the exact position of pipes and cables is unknown due to innacurate or non existant network plans. In order to carry out precise water leak detection and to avoid damage to utilities and operators during excavations, it is essential to know the precise position of all services. We use high performance equipment which can locate and trace buried pipes and cables.

Network Monitoring with Noise Loggers
Noise Loggers are used for early detection of leaks in water supply networks. The longer it takes to identify that a network is leaking the more revenue is lost and the greater the loss of precious water resources. In addition to the more conventional methods of leak detection the installation of permanent noise loggers has proved to be a cost effective tool in early identification of water loss. By permanently monitoring sections of the system, which have previously been proven leak free, it will alert you when a potential leak does develop. Read more .

Asset sales plan secures EU backing for $130 billion Dow, DuPont

Asset sales plan secures EU backing for $130 billion Dow, DuPont merger

(Reuters) – Dow Chemical and DuPont won the blessing of the European Union for their $130 billion merger on Monday by agreeing to sell substantial assets including key research and development activities.

The European Commission had been concerned that the merger of two of the biggest and oldest U.S. chemical producers would leave few incentives to produce new herbicides and pesticides in the future. The deal is one of a trio of mega mergers that will reshape the industry and consolidate six companies into three.

Asset sales would ensure competition in the sector and benefit European farmers and consumers, the Commission said.

“We need effective competition in this sector so companies are pushed to develop products that are ever safer for people and better for the environment,” European Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager said in a statement.

“Our decision today ensures that the merger between Dow and DuPont does not reduce price competition for existing pesticides or innovation for safer and better products in the future.”

The two other big deals in the industry are ChemChina’s [CNNCC.UL] $43 billion bid for Syngenta and Bayer’s acquisition of Monsanto.

Dow and DuPont said they were still on target for $3 billion in cost synergies and $1 billion in growth benefits.

The deal is still to be approved by regulators in the United States, Brazil, China, Australia and Canada, but the companies said they were confident of clearance in all remaining jurisdictions.

“This regulatory milestone is a significant step toward closing the merger transaction, with the intention to subsequently spin into three independent publicly traded companies,” Dow spokeswoman Rachelle Schikorra said in an email.

The EU approval may be a sign that U.S. regulators would follow suit because the agencies have traditionally coordinated on reviews and remedies for large multinational mergers, said Diana Moss, president of the American Antitrust Institute non-profit group.

However, any required asset sales would likely reflect antitrust concerns in the local marketplace.

“In the U.S. there are very high shares in corn and soybean seeds. We would expect those problems to be significant enough for enforcers in the U.S. to remedy them,” Moss said.

Weighty Decision

The 1,000-page decision underlined the significance of the merger. In return for the EU green light, DuPont will divest large parts of its global pesticides business, including its global research and development organization.

The unit makes herbicides for cereals, oilseed rape, sunflower, rice and pasture and insecticides for insect control for fruits and vegetables.

Dow, in turn, will sell two acid co-polymer manufacturing facilities in Spain and the United States, as well as a contract with a third party through which it buys ionomers. The company has already found a buyer in South Korea’s SK Innovation.

“The main surprises here are the inclusion of the pesticides and the exclusion of any kind of seed assets,” Bernstein analysts wrote in a note. The analysts also said they had expected EU to be concerned about the concentration of seed sales, and that they would require Dow to divest its corn seeds business.

European Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager holds a news conference after Dow Chemical gained conditional EU antitrust approval on Monday for their $130 billion merger by agreeing to significant asset sales, one of a trio of mega mergers that will redraw the agrochemicals industry, in Brussels, Belgium March 27, 2017. Yves Herman

“We see the required divestments here as smaller than we originally expected, due to the exclusion of seed assets”.

Ebola travel: South Africa bans incomers from W Africa – BBC

Ebola travel: South Africa bans incomers from W Africa

21 August 2014

Image caption Kenya has not reported any cases of Ebola, but is a common transit point for African travellers

South Africa says non-citizens arriving from Ebola-affected areas of West Africa will not be allowed into the country, with borders closed to people from Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

All non-essential outgoing travel to the affected countries has been banned.

Senegal also said it was suspending flights with Ebola-affected countries, and closing the border with Guinea.

Cameroon and the Ivory Coast earlier imposed travel bans, despite World Health Organization warnings not to.

Medium-risk

South African nationals will be allowed to re-enter the country when returning from high-risk countries, but will undergo strict screening, the health ministry said on Thursday.

Usual screening procedures are in place for those who travel between Nigeria, Kenya and Ethiopia, which have been defined as medium-risk countries.

Image caption Nigeria stepped up its airport screening procedures after a number of Ebola cases were confirmed

South Africa has experienced two Ebola scares in recent weeks, involving passengers arriving from Liberia and Guinea, but the country has so far remained Ebola-free.

Johannesburg has one of the major transit airports, connecting southern Africa with the rest of the continent. Several airlines, including British Airways and Emirates Airlines, have stopped flights to some of the affected countries.

Meanwhile, Senegal’s interior ministry announced on Friday it was closing the land borders with Guinea “once again”.

Senegal shut its border with Guinea for the first time in March after the virus reached the capital Conakry.

In a statement, it said this extends to “air and sea borders for aircraft and ships from the Republic of Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia”.

AU team

Separately, the African Union (AU) announced plans to send a special team to the four affected countries.

The six-month-long operation, involving volunteer doctors, nurses and medical personnel, will cost about $25m (£15m) and begin immediately, the AU said in a statement.

Aid workers and medical staff are most exposed to the virus, and have been most at risk of becoming infected. Two US aid workers were discharged from hospital on Tuesday, after recovering from the virus they contracted in Liberia.

The supply of the experimental drug used to treat the couple, ZMapp, has been exhausted.

As Ebola has no known cure, it is being controlled by isolating victims and those who have come into contact with them.

Liberia’s attempt to prevent the spread of the virus by imposing quarantines has led to unrest .

Home Loans – Approved Loans

What is a Home Loan?

Every person wants a home, may it be an apartment, a mansion or just a simplex. Whether you are refinancing a bond/mortgage or purchasing your little paradise, you sure will need to have a home loan that you is just right for you. There are a lot of financial institutions or lending companies or even banks which offer hassle- less home loan processing.

First time home buyers usually get a home loan more easily. There is a wide variety of programs that have restrictions that come with the contract. Others find this too perfect for them, but for some, this may be a wrong choice.

First time home buyer loan

All first- times can be a big deal. It consumes too much time, effort and money. Some people usually seek the aid of a first time home loan to hurdle the issues with money. The program varies depending on the location but generally, the idea of a first time home loan is to give qualified borrowers the financial assistance.

Some financial institution would offer the home loan in the following way:

  • Low to no down payment
  • Limit fees
  • Defer payments and offer grants
  • Subsidize the cost of the interest

These are but a few examples of the benefits first time home buyers may take advantage of but take note that not everything in the list can be made available for you to take advantage of.

Who can take advantage of a home loan?

Anyone can take advantage of a home loan; but first time home owners are good candidates. Some programs usually offer home loans to people who have not owned a home within the last 3 years. Again, programs vary depending on the area so it is good to check if any lending company or institutions offer this in you area.

Are there any restrictions?

Like any other, home loans also have restrictions. Most of home loan programs put a R limit on the property that you are going to purchase. You may not be able to get a home loan for the most expensive property round the town but you will instead be limited to properties that are at the bottom of the pyramid. The idea is to provide margin and benefit to people who are in dire need.

It is not advisable to use the first time home buyer loan for a rent. You are given the opportunity to own a home so grab it. Finally, the house that you are to purchase must also meet some physical requirements.

The challenges.

You may be faced with a few challenges when getting a first time home buyer loan:

  • The home may not be the home you want
  • You may lose the benefits if you sell your house too soon
  • Paying tax for some benefits you received
  • Shared home value increase with the program you signed up with

With these restrictions, you will be armed with knowledge when you decide to get a home loan for you family. It is a must for you to find out the ups and downs of something before you even decide of saying yes to it.

Home Loan FAQs

A home is an important asset especially if you have a family. This is where you raise your children, eat, sleep and entertain family and friends. Owning a home is better than renting since you are building up equity. Is a home loan right for you then?

There are First Time Home Buyers programs out there. Check with the local lenders to find out.

You can often refinance at local bank with no closing cost home equity loan. That is, provided that you meet standard ratios of debt to income, that you have adequate equity in the home, and that your credit is very good. If you do not meet these qualifications, then you need to go elsewhere for a more traditional home equity loan.

The structure is not uncommon. Most often than not, the buyer has little to put down.

The credit score will be a bit low so the buyer will be hit by a high interest rate.

Watch out for prepayment penalties as that is also common with such a deal when the credit score is average to low.

From Traveler Magazine’s 2013 Tours of a Lifetime

Get One Year for $10  »

By Margaret Loftus

Marathon mania has spilled over into mainstream adventure travel, spawning running-focused trips around the world, including this twist on the classic Inca Trail trek. Runners tackle the ancient Andes route in two days, from the Urubamba Valley, through the “Pass of the Dead Woman” at 13,780 feet, and into the cloud forest to the Intipunku “Gateway of the Sun” at 8,923 feet, where they’ll get their first eyeful of Machu Picchu in its full splendor. Trip veteran Joshua Price calls the experience “challenging, but incredible.” The big event is sandwiched between acclimatization runs, stints in the cities of Cusco and Lima, and a day spent touring the ruins. Andes Adventures: “Inca Trail to Machu Picchu Running Adventure,” 9 days; $2,795; www .andesadventures.com

Panama: King’s Road

First forged by Indians and later cobblestoned by the Spanish in the 1500s to move Inca gold to galleons bound for Spain, El Camino Real connects the Pacific and Atlantic 50 miles across the Isthmus of Panama. Hike what remains of the rugged trail through Chagres National Park, home to jaguars, spider monkeys, and anteaters. Thanks to multiple river hikes, expect to be soggy for a good part of the day. Ancon Expeditions of Panama: “Camino Real Trek,” 8 days; $1,600; www.anconexpeditions.com

Chile: Patagonian Sip and Bike

Wine-tasting pairs with easygoing biking in the Casablanca and San Antonio valleys. Then the action moves to the Lake District and northern Patagonia for white-knuckle white-water rafting on the Petrohué River, a hike around the base of the snowcapped Osorno Volcano, and a traditional lamb barbecue hosted by local gauchos. Santiago Adventures: “Bikes, Wine and Patagonia,” 8 days; $3,290; www.santiagoadventures.com

Brazil: Trifecta Trek

This unusual walking-focused itinerary spans three distinct parts of Brazil: the Royal Route, which connected the gold mines of the interior to the coast during Portuguese rule; colonial Salvador, coined “the capital of happiness,” thanks to its laid-back residents and lively carnival; and the otherworldly cliffs, monoliths, and caves of Chapada Diamantina National Park. Country Walkers: “Brazil: Royal Route, Salvador, and Chapada Diamantina,” 11 days; $6,498; www.countrywalkers.com

Nicaragua: For the Birds

For all the buzz touting it as the next Costa Rica, Nicaragua has yet to attract mainstream tourists in droves. But this itinerary shows off its potential as a nature nirvana, with visits to five wildlife reserves, including Selva Negra (a combination organic farm, eco-lodge, and bird-friendly coffee estate). Bonus: Birders have a shot at spotting and cataloging any new species to help create the country’s first bird book. International Expeditions: “Nicaragua: Land of Lakes and Volcanoes,” 9 days; $3,398; www.ietravel.com

Ecuador: Homestay in the Amazon

The term “cultural immersion” pops up a lot on travel company websites, but here’s the real deal. Spend four days living with a Quichua family in the Amazon jungle, where you’ll learn how to identify medicinal plants; make chicha, a fermented drink from cassava; and participate in a shaman healing ceremony. G Adventures: “Ecuador Jungle Local Living,” 7 days; $499; www.gadventures.com

Belize: Reefs to Ruins

With 180 miles of coastline, the second longest barrier reef in the world, virgin rain forests, and Maya ruins crammed into a country roughly the size of New Jersey, Belize is an undersize country with oversize natural gifts. Here’s an itinerary that lets you experience it all. National Geographic Adventures: “Belize: Reefs, Rain Forests, and Ruins,” 10 days; $4,195; www.nationalgeographicadventures.com

Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina: South American Odyssey

Starting in Trinidad and skirting the eastern coastline of South America to Buenos Aires, this grand expedition on the 148-passenger National Geographic Explorer —a celebration of the National Geographic Society’s 125th anniversary—focuses on the region’s cultural heritage as well as flora and fauna. An army of experts (including Explorer-in-Residence Wade Davis and conservation biologist Thomas Lovejoy) is on board to answer your questions. Best Time to Visit South Africa

Often referred to as Sunny South Africa , this phrase is not far wrong. South Africa, and Southern Africa in general has some of the more agreeable weather in the world and for most of the year. However the best time to visit South Africa depends on the purpose of your visit, and the areas you wish to see. The seasons in South Africa run opposite to the northern hemisphere and therefore a white Christmas is out of the question! The best time to visit South Africa really depends on your interests or reasons for coming to South Africa. Wildlife Safaris are often very high on the agenda, followed by the Garden Route, Cape Town, the whales of the south coast. the flowers of Namaqualand, the Drakensberg Mountains and of course the hundreds of kilometers of beach destinations to choose from.

The seasons fall in the year as follows:

Spring – September October

Summer – November to February

Autumn – March April

Winter – June – August

South Africa can be divided into summer rainfall areas and winter rainfall areas. The northern, central and east parts of South Africa, which include areas of interest such as: Kruger National Park, Johannesburg, Kwa Zulu Natal, Madikwe Game Reserve, Drakensberg Mountains and the Free State, has a summer rainfall, and cool and dry winters.

The Western Cape and Garden Route areas, which include Cape Town and surrounds and all along the southern coast to about Port Elizabeth, has winter rainfall and dry summers. The northern interior part of the country has a very low annual rainfall, and is considered to be semi-arid to desert in places.

In the summer rainfall areas, the rain comes predominantly in the forms of thunder showers or down pours, which may last anything from 20 minutes to heavy rain on and off over a few days. However the maximum average daily temperature varies between 28 – 35 deg cel, depending where in this region you are. As a result of the summer rains and associated warm sunny weather, the vegetation is very green and often thick. From a safari perspective, the summer months (often referred to as the green season), is the best time to see the African bush at its greenest. The birdlife is at its best, and it is the calving season for many of the antelope species. The sunsets during this time of year can be a riot of pinks and reds and the air is generally very clean. The negative side to being on safari during the green season is that fact the bush is thick and therefore visibility can at times be limited. Another factor to consider is that surface water scattered all over the bush, causes game movements to become less predictable, in that there is now no reason for animals to go and drink at the traditional permanent water holes and rivers as they would have done in the dry season.

During dry season (the winter months), this region turns into shades of yellow and browns. The night time temperatures can vary between 0 – 12 degrees cel, depending on what part of the region you are in. It is during this season and into spring that it s considered the best time to go on safari. Many trees and shrubs lose their leaves, the grass drops and becomes grazed and so the visibility increases dramatically. The surface water (pans and puddles) that were present in the summer months dry out and game movements become a little more predictable.

The winter rainfall areas of the Western Cape and Garden Route tend to be green in winter and less so during summer. The rains typically come in the form of cold fronts that sweep in from the south, bringing with them rain, cold and often wind. These cold and rainy spells can last 2 – 3 days, but are invariably followed by what can be only be described as champagne days – crystal clear air, blue skies and brilliant colours. The summer months are typically warm to hot and a great time to explore Cape Town and the Garden Route. During the mid-summer months of December and January, the south-easter wind (locallly referred to as the Cape Doctor for its air cleansing habits), can arrive and hang around for a day or even a week and has been known to ruin expensive hair-dos, but at the same time raise the level of excitement of windsurfers, sailors and kite flyers!

Best time to visit South in terms of Activities

To sum up the areas, below is a good idea of when its best to do what activities

* South African Safaris are best from May – October (dry season)

* To visit the Cape Graden Route, the best time would be the summer months. in particular Febraury March.

* The best time to see whales off the Cape s coast is July – October

* The wild flowers of the Western Cape Namaqualand are best seen in early spring (August September)

* The Drakensberg Mountains are best seen during the summer months (October – February)

South Africa

Hello Michele, We want to thank you for organising our extraordinary safari adventure in Southern Africa. Everything that we had planned worked seamlessly and efficiently in all three countries, including eleven airplanes (+helicopter), multiple lodges and hotels over nearly three weeks. We saw and experienced everything we could imagine for Africa and came home exhilarated (and healthy). A special delight were the staff at all the lodges in Botswana, who seemed so happy to meet with us, spend personal time with us, and treated us like honoured family guests. Our game viewing drives covered all manner of terrain and close up encounters with so many animals and birds in their natural surroundings, that we took over 900 photographs combined. The expert and knowledgeable guides soon became new friends. The food and accommodations were first class and individually special everywhere. We were busy the whole time, and the places you chose presented an exotic variety of experiences.

Some additional comments that did not detract from our delightful safari:

* Night game drives with searchlights were OK, but somehow seemed intrusive and not too productive.

* Nights and predawn drives were indeed cold despite hot water bottles, lush bedcovers, and vehicle blankets so we were happy to be there in June not August. We came well prepared with warm clothes, scarves and gloves and needed them on highway game drives we were surprised how cold those cottages with screens, Kanana and Okuti, were at night and early morning. The low temperature was 0 degrees Centigrade one morning and no higher than 10 degrees on other days.

* Victoria falls was extraordinary but so full of mist that a later date would have been better (my error). The helicopter ride provided an expanded view, but seemed rather expensive.

Again, we congratulate Safari Consultants, for a complex network of arrangements between camps and transport operations that works flawlessly without delays across countries, rivers, airports etc.

We have recommended Safari consultants to all our friends here, and to our families in the UK.

South America – travel – Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Peru, Brazil, Ecuador

South America

OlГЎ, Hola. Carnival in Rio, Incas, Caribbean beaches, Tango. There is so much here, too much. More or less it is easy to country-hop and visa free – it is just a huge area! Start loving buses.

Argentina. Paraguay Uruguay .

Intro. From a traveller perspective, South America splits into roughly three regions. The more developed Southern countries of Argentina, Uruguay and Chile; with their European feel, political stability and relatively high standards (not to mention great wine and meat). This is where many start/finish a trip.

Then you have the less developed Inca and Amazon countries – Bolivia, Peru and Ecuador/Colombia. Here you have the main concentration of travellers, drawn not only by the world famous sights, but also the significantly lower cost of travel (certainly in Bolivia). And a more authentic South American feeling with a great percentage of indigenous population (highest in Bolivia) and stereotypical scenery.

And lastly you have Brazil, which although often combined as part of a larger trip (typically Rio and/or the Foz do Iguaçu ), needs to be treated separately due to its size and different vibe/language.

South America on the whole lacks difficult border crossings and visa headaches (although Americas will occasionally run into hefty charges). Bus transport is easy to arrange and there is a very established trail of attractions (often known as the Gringo Trail ). This however causes many to bite off more than they can chew in terms of distances to be covered overland, not finding the time or the energy to discover out of the way gems and (although good value on a world level) spending too much [money] in the Southern developed countries and/or (especially) Brazil.

The most backpackery countries are Bolivia and Peru with a clear trail of attractions, party hostels/towns/tours and lots of people to meet. Tour mentality and the type of other travellers (certainly at the budget end) you meet can jade some, certainly in the case of Bolivia where you ll find the best value for money on the continent.

A number of South/Central American countries have currencies pegged/fixed to the US dollar where a better parallel (black market) exchange rate can exist. To benefit you need USD cash. Do your research before travel. This is currently the case in Venezuela and Argentina.

What follows are only basic snap shot summaries. If you have decided these are some of the countries you want to visit and need more planning information, you are strongly recommended to complement what you find here with a planning guide. Trust us: it will make life much easier.

It is worth looking, if you have not already, at the example layout to see the guidelines each section of information is based on – or for other travel advice and site home head for www.travelindependent.info

If you are set on going and need a guidebook or reading material please see a list of recommended guides/books here (go on have a look!). If you want to read fiction, you are in luck as some of the world s best writers were from South America. All guides/books are described here in more detail.

South America

Nestled between the Caribbean, the South Pacific, and the South Atlantic Oceans, South America is the wilder of the Americas, and a continent of superlatives.

The world’s biggest rainforest and the largest river (Amazon), the highest mountain range outside Asia (the Andes), remote islands (Galapagos Islands. Easter Island and Fernando de Noronha ), heavenly beaches (such as in Brazil’s Northeastern region), wide deserts (Atacama), icy landscapes (Patagonia Tierra del Fuego ), the world’s tallest waterfall (the 979m Angel Falls. in Venezuela) and one of the largest (Iguaçu Falls. Argentina and Brazil), as well as several other breathtaking natural attractions.

Other destinations Edit

Understand Edit

Get in Edit

By plane Edit

Getting to South America has become much easier in recent years due to massive increases in flights to the continent by major global airlines. Although some particular places are still quite hard to reach (i.e. Paraguay. Suriname. northern Brazil ), the places that you most likely want to go, such as Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro. are more accessible than ever before.

  • From Africa. the only (reliable) options worth considering would be the South African Airways service linking Johannesburg with Sao Paulo and Buenos Aires or the Ethiopian Airlines service between Addis Ababa and São Paulo via Lomé. There are also connections of TAAG Angola Airlines from Luanda to Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. And Royal Air Maroc flies from Casablanca to São Paulo three times a week. Do realize that demand between Africa and South America is very limited, so even the aforementioned services are infrequent and fares may be quite high.
  • From Asia. Be prepared for a very long journey, especially if your itinerary includes connecting flights to travel to/beyond the major Asian and South American hubs. There is a Korean Air route between Seoul -Incheon and Sao Paulo (via Los Angeles ). Do note that the stop in the United States will require all passengers, including those in transit, to pass through US customs. Air China has flights between Beijing and São Paulo. via Madrid. Emirates has non-stop flights from Dubai to Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. this latter continuing services to Buenos Aires. Turkish Airlines has daily flights from Istanbul to São Paulo, continuing services to Buenos Aires. In 2011, Singapore Airlines started flights from Singapore to Sao Paulo via Barcelona. In 2012 Qatar Airways started its daily non-stop service from Doha to São Paulo. continuing services to Buenos Aires. Ethiad Airways has a daily flight from Abu Dhabi to São Paulo .
  • From Australia, New Zealand. and the South Pacific. A somewhat surprising number of options exist. Both Aerolineas Argentinas and LAN Airlines serve Auckland and Sydney from their respective hubs at Buenos Aires and Santiago. while Qantas introduced a non-stop service between Sydney and Santiago on March 2012. LAN also operates one of the world’s most obscure flights of all – a service linking Santiago -Easter Island -Tahiti. From Perth. Emirates and South African Airways provide affordable flights to South America with a stopover in their respective hubs, around 30 hours total flying time.
  • From Europe. The entire South American continent once lived under European colonial rule, and the resultant political, social, and economic ties between former colonies and colonizers remain quite strong even today. Portuguese flag carrier TAP Airlines is by far the leading foreign carrier to Brazil, serving a slew of destinations in North and East Brazil. including direct connections from Lisbon to Porto Alegre in South Brazil and to the Brazilian capital Brasilia which otherwise have few other international connections. Spanish flag carrier Iberia flies to most of the former Spanish colonies, although neither Bolivia nor Paraguay are served. KLM flies between Amsterdam and Suriname and Air France links Paris with French Guiana. Of course, such services are not exclusive – KLM also flies to Buenos Aires directly from Amsterdam. and to Lima as well, TAP to Caracas. Air France to Rio de Janeiro and Lima. etc. Other leading European airlines such as British Airways, Lufthansa, Swiss Airlines, and Alitalia also serve key South American gateways from their respective hubs, while South American airlines also operate into several major European cities as well.
  • From North America. Until very recently, it was virtually inconceivable to reach South America from anywhere other than Miami. Today, however, rapidly developing hubs at Atlanta. Dallas /Fort Worth. Fort Lauderdale. Houston. Mexico City. New York. Newark. Orlando. Toronto. and Washington -Dulles offer viable alternatives. Indeed, airlines such as Air Canada, United and Delta Airlines have successfully begun to challenge the virtual monopoly once enjoyed by American Airlines to several key markets. American discount carriers such as Spirit Airlines and JetBlue (Azul in Brazil) have recently fought hard for and won several route authorities to serve the likes of Colombia. Brazil and Peru. bringing low fares to these markets for the first time. Recently, US Airways started a daily non-stop service from Charlotte to Rio de Janeiro. Given the US airlines’ cutbacks in service, frequency, and cities served over the years, consider high quality Latin American carriers such as Avianca (to Colombia with daily non-stop flights to Bogotá, Medellín. Cali and Cartagena), Copa Airlines (Panama’s national airline to hits hub in Panamá City), LAN Airlines (Chilean carrier serving Chile direct and via several other countries), or TAM (to Brazil, including some non-stop flights to other Brazilian cities besides São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. like Belo Horizonte. Brasilia and Manaus ).

By car Edit

Beware there are no roads connecting Panama with Colombia, hence it is not possible to drive from Central America. People overcome this problem shipping their cars from Colon for easier transportation (Atlantic side in Panama) to Cartagena or Barranquilla (Colombia), or from Panama City (Pacific side of the Panama canal) to Buenaventura (Colombia) or Guayaquil(Ecuador).

The Pan-American Highway is a series of routes starting in Central America and running to the tip of South America (save for the Darien Gap between Panama and Colombia). It’s an interesting option for those with a good vehicle, plenty of spare parts, and a desire to explore the western edge of the continent.

By train Edit

There are no rail connections between Panama and Colombia.

By boat Edit

Some cruise liners cover the towns in the lower Caribbean (Cartagena, Santa Marta, Margarita Island). Royal Caribbean. Holland America. Princess Cruises – [1].

Get around Edit

Visas Edit

The Union of South American Nations gives visa-free access and a customs union between all countries in South America.

By plane Edit

International flights are generally expensive within South America and from South America to other parts of the world. Within each country the national domestic flights can be more reasonable. Therefore, it may be more economical (cost wise) to fly to the border city of one country, cross the border by ground transportation and fly onwards from the other side of the border. For example, for one to go from Lima to Santiago, the traveller might fly from Lima to Tacna, take a bus or taxi to Arica, and fly onwards from Arica to Santiago.

By train Edit

There are no cross-country train services in South America, and with the exception of Argentina and Chile. domestic networks are quite limited, such as a railway in Bolivia, from Oruro to Villazón, passing through Uyuni, Tupiza and some other places, and a railway in Brazil, linking regional capitals Belo Horizonte and Vitória. There are a number of very scenic “tourist trains” though, including the 445km Quito -Guayaquil route in Ecuador.

By bus Edit

Buses are the main form of land transport for much of the continent. for longer distances you’re often better off flying but if you like you can use the bus but it may be a longer drive.

Talk Edit

Spanish is the official language in all countries except Brazil, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana, and is widely spoken even in the countries that are not historically Spanish speaking. Portuguese is the official language in Brazil. which comprises about half the population and land area of the continent. There are also many indigenous peoples living in South America who speak their own languages, and if you are really going off the beaten track, you might have to learn them too. In Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana, the official languages are English. Dutch and French respectively.

Hi Kalei,

You would probably be better served by setting up a new thread with your questions regarding Intrepid. This thread is a little old, and your questions would receive a better response on a new post.

However. to follow on about Tucan. considering the title.

I guided a trip for Tucan last year. Out of all the operators I ve guided for, I would rate them as amongst the worst.

The route was poorly constructed and they proved one of the most badly organised and unprofessional overland operators I ve dealt with. They worked with a local ground handler whose considerable efforts salvaged a potentially disastrous tour. Tucan blatantly ignored all local information and advice, claiming they knew better .

I, as the tour leader, received the actual itinerary something like 3 days before commencement, and vital issues were still under discussion when the tour started. I only helped out because no one else could (or would).

We spent the last night, in Cape Town. in probably the worst backpackers accommodation I ve ever seen. It was a disgrace (and they had only booked for one of their two groups staying there – they d forgotten the second one). The other Tucan group had similar experiences of Tucan s sheer incompetence and lack of local understanding.

At one stage, we were surrounded by a gang of AK47-wielding gunmen, despite my warnings to Tucan that the routing was not recommended for safety reasons (unfortunately a single guest, of a group of 9, had demanded that we stick to the orginal itinerary). She found the experience quite exciting .

I would certainly never recommend the company in Southern Africa.

I would, however, recommend Intrepid on most of their SA products.

Health Information for Travelers to South Africa – Traveler view #london

#travel to south africa
#

Vaccines and Medicines

You should be up to date on routine vaccinations while traveling to any destination. Some vaccines may also be required for travel.

Get travel vaccines and medicines because there is a risk of these diseases in the country you are visiting.

Ask your doctor what vaccines and medicines you need based on where you are going, how long you are staying, what you will be doing, and if you are traveling from a country other than the US.

When traveling in South Africa, you should avoid mosquito bites to prevent malaria. You may need to take prescription medicine before, during, and after your trip to prevent malaria, depending on your travel plans, such as where you are going, when you are traveling, and if you are spending a lot of time outdoors or sleeping outside. Talk to your doctor about how you can prevent malaria while traveling. For more information on malaria in South Africa, see malaria in South Africa.

Rabies can be found in dogs, bats, and other mammals in South Africa, so CDC recommends this vaccine for the following groups:

  • Travelers involved in outdoor and other activities (such as camping, hiking, biking, adventure travel, and caving) that put them at risk for animal bites.
  • People who will be working with or around animals (such as veterinarians, wildlife professionals, and researchers).
  • People who are taking long trips or moving to South Africa
  • Children, because they tend to play with animals, might not report bites, and are more likely to have animal bites on their head and neck.

There is no risk of yellow fever in South Africa. The government of South Africa requires proof of yellow fever vaccination only if you are arriving from a country with risk of yellow fever. This does not include the US. If you are traveling from a country other than the US, check this list to see if you may be required to get the yellow fever vaccine: Countries with risk of yellow fever virus (YFV) transmission .

For more information on recommendations and requirements, see yellow fever recommendations and requirements for South Africa. Your doctor can help you decide if this vaccine is right for you based on your travel plans.

GO Travel South – Direct Flights, Amazing Prices

GO Travel Introduces an Evolved Brand and Fantastic Value for Hassle-Free Sun Vacations Direct From Ottawa and Halifax

OTTAWA, ONTARIO–(Marketwire – Oct. 8, 2009) – The company that pioneered direct, online travel booking a decade ago, has a new name, new look and new deals. What hasn’t changed is the fact we offer value sun vacations with direct flights.

GO Travel South (GTS) is now taking bookings for a number of exciting sun destinations including All- Inclusive Luxury cruises.

GTS offers direct, non-stop flights from Ottawa departing on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays beginning November 7. Destinations include Cancun, Mexico, as well as three hot spots in the Dominican Republic: Puerto Plata, Punta Cana and Santo Domingo. Halifax departures to Puerto Plata, Punta Cana and Cancun begin January 9.

GTS NEW/ EXPANDED VACATION OPTIONS

NEW! All-Inclusive Luxury Cruises from Santo Domingo

All-inclusive cruising is an increasingly popular option for value-conscious travellers. No more worrying about cash: Even port taxes are part of the package!

This season, GTS is offering a cruise package through Pullmantur, a Spanish travel company that operates cruise ships in the Caribbean. Ports of call include St. Lucia, Martinique, Guadeloupe, St. Martin and Tortola. You can expect near PERFECT weather in every port! The GTS Pullmantur option offers Saturday-to-Saturday cruises and the opportunity to add a full week at an all-inclusive resort destination in the Dominican Republic either before or after the cruise.

MORE! Five-star Hotels

Winter-wearing travellers are telling us they like to be pampered, and we have listened. In response to increasing demand for higher quality hotels, GTS has added several four-and-a-half and five-star hotels to its list and again will be offering packages to AM Resorts, offering unlimited luxury properties in the Dominican Republic and Mexico. With these and other resorts, we continue to offer some of the most attractive packages in the travel industry.

MORE! Wild Card Vacation Opportunities

This year, we’ve expanded our Wild Card program. It’s available all season long and is not limited to last-minute bookings. We have also added more four- and five-star hotels to the list. Wild Card is for people who like adventure: You won’t know where you’ll be staying until you land. At the airport, a GTS representative will meet travellers and escort them to their surprise destination. The idea is simple: You choose the date, and GTS chooses the hotel. You get the same quality vacation at an even better price.

NEW! Complimentary Golf

Any holiday booked at the Secrets Silversands, Secrets Maroma, Secrets Capri Riviera Cancun or the Dreams Riviera Cancun includes unlimited complimentary green fees at the El Camaleon Mayakoba, a PGA championship golf course designed by Greg Norman. The El Camaleon is host to the PGA Mayakoba Golf Classic. It is the only course is on the Mayan Riviera featuring two holes just steps from the Caribbean Sea.

NEW! Flight Partner

Our air carrier this winter is Flair Airlines Ltd. Canada’s newest name in charter airline operations. Based in Kelowna, B.C. Flair Air is licensed by Transport Canada to provide passenger and cargo charter services in Canada and internationally. Flair’s owner, Jim Rogers spent over 35 years working in partnership with Barry Lapointe to build Kelowna Flightcraft, which is one of Canada’s largest multi disciplined aviation organizations. With leather seats, and greater legroom, Flair Air’s Boeing 737-400 aircraft can transport up to 158 passengers in comfort. The plane will be based in Ottawa for the season for exclusive use by GTS. For further information on Flair Airlines Ltd. visit www.flairair.ca .

In November, GTS will offer early season packages from Ottawa using seats on WestJet flights.

NEW NAME, NEW LOOK, SAME VALUE

GO Travel introduced the direct-to-consumer, online booking model to Canada in 2000. Today, competitors, in following GO Travel’s methodology, also offer a direct booking experience. However, these companies are still reliant on travel agents and expensive brochures to sell 80 per cent of their holidays, and as a result the commissions and marketing costs get passed along to consumers.

GTS offers savvy sun-seekers an opportunity to cut out the middleman and book their vacation directly with the people who plan and operate the holiday. Because travellers never pay a penny in travel agents’ commissions, they can save up to one-fifth of the cost of the trip!

Furthermore, more and more people are comfortable with booking their vacations online. Last year, over 80 per cent of all GO Travel holiday bookings were made via their website. As a result of this change in consumer behaviour, there’s been a shift in the travel industry away from storefront operations to websites and call centres. All of GTS’ operations are now done online or over the phone. GTS’ head office and call centre are now located in Halifax with an administrative office in Ottawa.

The GTS Advantage

We do things differently. That’s the GTS advantage.

– We offer lower prices because you book without a middleman.

– We offer holiday insurance/protection that has been developed exclusively for GO Travel South, making peace of mind easier and more affordable.

– We promise that you will always be able to talk to someone who’s been to the resort or hotel. Our travel advisors are sent on educational trips to each destination so that they can help you selecting the right property and answer any questions you might have.

– Our website is available 24 hours a day. You can browse through various destinations, holidays and hotels or even book online!

The GTS Guarantee

We are so confident that our prices are the best, we offer travellers the following guarantee: If you find the same holiday at a price lower than ours, we will match that price and give every adult travelling $100 cash. We also provide an unconditional guarantee that once booked, your holiday will not be subject to any surcharges or fees.

About GO Travel South

GO Travel South continues the tradition of offering a direct-booking experience that provides great value for winter travellers. Our all-inclusive sun vacations, with departures from Ottawa and Halifax to Mexico and the Dominican Republic, are among the most competitive in the industry.

All sun vacation packages include return airfare aboard Flair Airlines, seven nights in three-, four- or five-star hotels or cruise ships with all-inclusive meal plans (food and drinks), accommodation and airport transfers and taxes. All GO Travel South vacations include the daily on-site presence of a GTS representative.

GTS sun vacation bookings can be made online at www.gotravelsouth.com by phone, toll-free, at 1-877-573-0009.

South Carolina Teacher Certification and Licensing Guide 2017 #central #carolina #technical

#

The South Carolina Teaching and Certification Resource

The traditional pathway to South Carolina teacher certification is completing a bachelor s degree that includes a teacher preparation program. The South Carolina Department of Education oversees the certification process, which is outlined below to help you learn how to become a teacher in South Carolina.

How to Become a Teacher in South Carolina

To meet the basic eligibility requirements for teaching certification in South Carolina, candidates must have at least a bachelor s degree from an accredited college or university, pass the required Praxis assessments, and complete a background check. Additionally, prospective teachers must complete an approved South Carolina teacher preparation program, which is typically included in the bachelor s degree curriculum for traditional route educators.

If you already hold a bachelor s degree but did not complete a teacher preparation program, you may be eligible for licensure under one of the alternative teacher certification routes in South Carolina .

South Carolina uses a tiered license structure for educators. Those who meet the minimum certification requirements above are eligible for the Initial Certificate. Candidates may then complete continuing education to advance the license. Advanced certificate classifications in the state are as follows:

  • Bachelor s +18. This certificate is granted to those who hold a bachelor s degree and have completed 18 credit hours of graduate coursework within seven years.
  • Master Degree. The Master Degree certificate recognizes those who have a master s degree in an acceptable academic or professional field .
  • Master s +30. The Master s +30 certificate is for those who hold a master s degree plus 30 semester hours of graduate studies; or, hold a master s degree based on 60 semester hours of graduate studies; or, hold two master s degrees totaling at least 60 semester hours of graduate studies.
  • Docorate. The doctorate certificate is issued to those who meet certification requirements and hold a doctoral degree in an area recognized by the South Carolina Department of Education .

Finding Approved Teacher Education Programs in South Carolina

Projected Job Growth

Growth in Teaching Jobs in SC through 2024 2

Completing an approved South Carolina teacher preparation program is one of the most important steps to earn South Carolina teacher certification. Programs located in South Carolina that do not have this approval will not qualify graduates for licensure. You can see a list of approved programs through the South Carolina Department of Education .

Out-of-state programs must hold accreditation from one of the six regional accreditation agencies overseen by the US Department of Education. Out-of-state schools offering online programs must be accredited by one of the six regional accreditation agencies and be approved by that state s teacher licensing authority as well as that state s Board of Education for the preparation of teachers. You can read more about program approval requirements here .

Additionally, schools may be accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP). CAEP accreditation is viewed as a marker of excellence in the education field.

South Carolina Teacher Outlook
The South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce projects 133 average annual job openings due to growth for elementary school teachers, 63 average annual job openings due to growth for middle school teachers, and 94 average annual job openings due to growth for secondary school teachers in South Carolina through 2024. 3 These projected openings are in addition to anticipated openings from replacements. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are about 44,470 elementary, middle, and secondary school teachers in South Carolina, excluding special education. 4 Elementary school teachers in the state earn an average annual salary of $49,250, middle school teachers earn an average annual salary of $50,080, and secondary school teachers earn an average annual salary of $51,590. 4 The South Carolina Education Association is a useful resource for educators interested in working in South Carolina.

South Carolina Teacher Education Requirements

In order to earn certification to teach in the state of South Carolina, candidates must complete a teacher education program from an accredited college or university, complete a student teaching internship, hold a minimum of a bachelor s degree, and provide a letter of recommendation for a teaching license from a teacher preparation program official. Alternative routes to certification in South Carolina are also available.

South Carolina Teacher Testing Requirements

The South Carolina State Board of Education requires that teachers seeking certification earn passing scores on the Praxis Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) and Praxis Subject Assessments. The Praxis series is designed to assess candidates knowledge of teaching fundamentals as well as their level of expertise in the subject area they plan to teach. You can find out which specific exams are appropriate to the subject(s) you wish to teach through the South Carolina Department of Education .

Additional South Carolina Teacher Certification Requirements

South Carolina law states that all prospective teachers must submit fingerprints for a state and federal background check. South Carolina is moving to electronic fingerprinting for all state residents, though out-of-state residents may still submit a manual card scan. Refer to the application procedures for more information on completing this process.

South Carolina Teachers Licensing Application Process

Once the requirements for South Carolina educator certification have been completed, candidates must send an application to the Educator Licensure Office. The following documentation is required:

  • Completed electronic fingerprint process.
  • Official, sealed transcripts from each college or university attended.
  • College Recommendation Form signed by designated teacher preparation program official.
  • Passing scores for the required Praxis II content area exams.
  • Passing score on the Praxis Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) in the grade level(s) for which endorsement is sought.
  • South Carolina Licensure Application.
  • Payment of the application fee.

Visit the state s Department of Education for further details on South Carolina teacher certification.

South Carolina Car Insurance

The Piedmont region of South Carolina has the state’s cheapest state car insurance rates. and while car insurance is relatively inexpensive statewide, the difference between different insurance companies can be substantial. We’ve got every ZIP code in South Carolina mapped out below. See the difference between the highes and lowest rate for the same policy, as well as the average rate, by entering your ZIP code, age and coverage level.

South Carolina Car Insurance Laws

South Carolina not only requires liability insurance for bodily injury and property damage (as almost all states do) and uninsured motorist coverage (as many do), it demands its drivers buy uninsured motorist property damage as well.

That $25,000 would repair or replace your car if you get hit by someone without insurance — but it won’t fix your car if you are at fault. Only collision coverage does that.

Bring your insurance card. South Carolina requires an insurance company name and policy number at time of registration. If your policy is canceled, you must turn in your driver’s license and registration or find new coverage. You’ll pay a $200 reinstatement fee, plus $5 for every day you failed to have car insurance..

Register as an uninsured motorist: South Carolina allows a driver to pay a $550 annual fee to register as an uninsured motorist. The driver is still liable for any damage he causes, and the fee doesn’t buy any kind of coverage. We think this is a really, really bad option.

Uninsured motorist penalties for South Carolina: If you don’t register and pay the $500 fee to drive uninsured, you may have to pay a $445 fee, your license and registration may be suspended, your plates may be confiscated and you may have to file an SR-22 form.

Save your driver’s license: South Carolina reduces your total driver’s license points by half after one year, though a record of the violation stays on your motor vehicle record for three years. You can also reduce your points total by four by taking a defensive driving course. License suspensions start at 12 points; a 25-mph over the speed limit ticket is six points; a broken taillight is two.

Minimum age for owning and registering a car: In South Carolina, you must be 17 to own and register a car. Most insurance companies will require a parent or guardian to sign a car insurance policy because it is a legal document.

Cracked windshield law: If you have comprehensive coverage. your insurance will pay for a windshield replacement without a deductible being due. The fine for a cracked windshield is $237.

White lightning alert: You can lose your South Carolina driver’s license for hauling moonshine.

Proof of insurance via smartphone: South Carolina law allows drivers to show electronic proof of insurance during a traffic stop. Thirty-one states total allow this.

Basic liability is a required type of South Carolina auto insurance. If you want to drive legally in this state, you will need to have basic liability coverage before you get behind the wheel, which is true in every state. This covers the other driver, any passengers riding with them and their vehicle if you are at fault for an accident. Collisions and the related bills are frequently more expensive than that, though, so additional coverage is advisable.

Comprehensive and Collision Coverage

A South Carolina auto insurance policy with comprehensive and collision protection will cover much more than a basic liability policy. The collision coverage will take care of your expenses following an accident, including repairs and rental car costs. The comprehensive coverage will cover more than just collisions – it will also cover theft, vandalism, windshield damage and fire damage. You can even customize the monthly payments for an Acceptance policy with comprehensive and collision coverage by choosing a higher or lower deductible, so you can balance the coverage you want with the requirements of your budget.

Uninsured or Underinsured Motorist Coverage

Uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage may not be required in South Carolina, but drivers are strongly advised to add this type of coverage to their auto insurance policies. Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage will protect you from financial harm if you are in a collision with someone driving with no insurance or an insufficient amount of coverage. Acceptance carries uninsured and underinsured coverage for bodily injury and property damage, so you can rest assured you’re covered.

Best Time to Visit South Africa #travel #ireland

See our African Safari Specials. here we host great specials for safaris, tours, hotels and lodges. The latest addition to our Safari Specials is a 5 day Luxury Kruger Park Safari.

National Geographic Expeditions: “Epic South America,” 38 days; $34,730; www .nationalgeographicexpeditions.com

Contributing editor Margaret Loftus has reported and written “Tours of a Lifetime” for the past eight years.

Roger and Jean from California, USA travelled to South Africa, Botswana and Zambia

The Best Times to Travel to South America and Central America

Skip summer in Rio — December through February — when temperatures soar over 100 degrees Fahrenheit. (Photo: Ablestock.com/AbleStock.com/Getty Images )

The prospect of sun, summer temperatures and sandy beaches over below freezing temperatures and snow-filled streets draw Americans to Central and South America in droves during North America’s dreary winter months. In the Southern Hemisphere, South America benefits from the exact reverse seasonal calendar as the north, and equatorial Central America also has its dry season during the North American winter. Just skip the the holiday season from Christmas through New Year’s and around Easter — crowded times when regional residents head out on vacation.

Central America

While Central America benefits from a tropical climate year-round, the dry season is the most pleasant time to visit the region. The main part of dry season runs from January to March, with the shoulder months December and April varying in weather quality from country to country. At the beginning of dry season, prepare for cool evening and morning weather. In Belize and Panama, the season begins later — in February — but Nicaragua and Honduras have a longer dry season, beginning in December. Outside the dry season, in addition to humidity, travelers face oppressive mosquitos, heavy rain, tropical storms and the possibility of hurricanes.

Remaining close to your home city is not necessarily the best choice, as you are closer to the individuals and surroundings that caused the alcohol use in the first place. Particularly if you’re considering private or exclusive choices, there may be extra benefits in treating an extended rehab stay like a rest and going outside South Carolina. Many of the excellent treatment centers have assistance and locations that make them have the ambiance of four-star resorts so rehabilitation can be reinvigorating as well as therapeutic. “Before I entered a South Carolina drug rehab program, my life was an endless cycle of depression and drug use. I’d feel low so I’d get high, and when the drugs wore off, I’d feel even worse than I did before. Treatment was the only way I could hop off the rollercoaster for good.”

You might find the story above deeply familiar and deeply upsetting. Living with an addiction like this, and trying to keep a mental illness under control, can take up a significant amount of your energy and leave you feeling completely isolated and alone. The truth is that you’re not alone. In the 2009-2010 National Survey on Drug Use and Health. researchers found that 250,000 people in South Carolina 18 and older had at least one depressive episode in the year prior. Many of these people likely turned to drugs and alcohol as they hoped to recover.

Mental Illnesses and Addictions

It’s common for mental illnesses and addictions to go hand in hand.

We live in a do-it-yourself culture in which independence is praised more than almost any other attribute a person might have. Someone who has a mental illness might be encouraged to handle the issue alone, using the tools that are readily available. Addictions can readily follow this kind of self-medication, as your mind might really come to believe that it needs access to these drugs in order to feel simply normal. While medications can be helpful for some people who have addictions, you might have developed a secondary addiction to the medications you were provided, and you might have started abusing those drugs by taking doses too close together or taking doses that are much bigger than those your doctor recommended.

A Local Resource

The South Carolina Department of Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Services has an online tool that can help you find a South Carolina treatment center. The information provided is limited, but it might be a good place for you to start your search. You can also call us for information on treatment in your local area.

Lack of Awareness

Some people who have mental illnesses are quite aware that their conditions exist and that their mental health could be playing into an addiction, but other people are deeply unaware of their mental health status. For example, the Treatment Advocacy Center states that about 50 percent of people with schizophrenia and 40 percent of people with bipolar disorder have damage to specific parts of the brain, and as a result, they’re incapable of understanding that they have an illness. These people might feel miserable, but they might not know why.

It’s also common to have an addiction without an underlying mental illness at all. The compulsive behavior, constant lying and lack of connection with others can be just as disabling as having another type of mental illness, however, and that’s why some national organizations place addictions in the same category as other mental illnesses.

Whether a mental illness is standing behind your addiction issue or you have an addiction that’s just making you feel sad, low and miserable, we can help.

Just call us and provide us with your:

  • Location
  • Addiction history
  • Treatment preferences

We can help you find the right South Carolina drug treatment center to meet your needs.

When to Go in South Africa #travel #to #germany

#travel to south africa

When to Go

Roughly speaking, the summer months are December to March, autumn is April to May, winter is June to August, and spring is September to November. Because southern Africa is such a large area, and each region’s offerings change with the seasons, when you go may determine where you go.

The Coast — South Africa’s southwestern coast (the province known as Western Cape) tends to attract the majority of international visitors during the summer months. Fortunately, the country is big enough to absorb these increased numbers without causing the discomfort most people associate with busy seasons, though parts of Cape Town become unbearably full for locals’ tastes. Be aware, however, that accommodation prices do increase in summer, some by as much as 70%; and if you dislike crowds, you should try to avoid South Africa’s coast during the busiest school holidays, which — like elsewhere — take place from around mid-December to mid-January. In fact, the hot months of February and March are considered by most Northern Hemisphere dwellers to be the best times to visit; not least, to escape what by then has felt like a very long winter up north. April, too, is a great month to visit, when the light takes on a softer hue, sunsets are often spectacular, and balmy temperatures are preferable for those who dislike baking heat. Note, though, that you’ll need to book early if your visit coincides with Easter weekend, when you will compete with locals on their 10-day school vacation.

Depending on your interests, winter (June-Aug) brings substantial benefits, too: July to November are the months when the Southern Right whales migrate to the Cape’s southern coast, providing the best land-based whale-watching in the world (and plenty of opportunities to see them by boat). With the Cape a winter rainfall area, local tourism authorities have aptly dubbed the May-to-August period its “green season,” and indeed the Cape’s valleys and mountains are an ideal verdant backdrop to dramatic displays of fynbos (shrublike plant) in flower. While it can at times rain continuously, the pattern is usually broken every few days with balmy, sun-drenched days. It’s a wonderful time for Capetonians, who get to air their winter coats for only these few months and reclaim the city, now virtually empty of visitors, as their own.

If you’re at all hankering for the sun, plan to head to the Garden Route and Karoo, preferably along Route 62, where year-round sunshine ensures that any time of year is a great time to tackle a driving tour of this region. Winter is also the ideal time to visit the east coast of Kwazulu-Natal, which can be oppressively humid in summer.

October to November is when the Cape floral kingdom again wows her human inhabitants with a new batch of flowering species, while the beaches, still relatively empty, sparkle in the temperate sun, and guesthouses and hotels, hungry after the winter wait, offer some of the best deals of the season.

Inland — May to August are considered the best months for sighting big game in and around Kruger National Park. The foliage is less dense, malaria risk is lower, yet many of the private game reserve lodges drop their prices substantially.

June to October, however, is peak season in the Delta, Botswana; game-viewing is best at this time, thanks to the rains. Given the low-volume approach to tourism, lodges are booked months in advance, despite charging top dollar. The Delta is often combined with a visit to Victoria Falls, but the Falls are widely considered most impressive in full flood, between March and May, when some 500 million cubic liters of water cascade into the Batoka gorge every minute. The spray can obscure views, however, and prohibit riding the Batoka’s Grade 5 rapids — renowned in rafting circles as one of the most exhilarating rides in the world — as they are out of bounds when the falls are in flood.

The Climate

Depending on where you are, average maximum temperatures can vary from 80°F (27°C; Cape Town) to 90°F (32°C; Kruger National Park) in the summer, and from an average 69°F (21°C; Cape Town) to 77°F (25°C; Durban) in winter. While summer is the most popular time, high humidity in KwaZulu-Natal can make for muggy days, and gale-force winds often occur in Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. Winter visitors would be well advised to pack warm clothes, despite higher average temperatures than in the United States or Europe. South African buildings are not geared for the cold; insulation is low on the priority list, and central heating is nonexistent. Temperatures in the interior fluctuate wildly in winter; you’re best off layering.

Rainfall

South Africa is generally considered an arid region; two-thirds of the country receives less than 500mm (20 in.) of rain a year. In the interior, rain usually falls in the summer, and spectacular thunderstorms and the smell of damp earth bring great relief from the searing heat. The Garden Route enjoys rain year-round, usually at night. In Cape Town and surrounds, the rain falls mostly in the winter, when the gray skies are a perfect foil for the burnt-orange strelitzias, pink proteas, and fields of white arum lilies — and an equally good accompaniment to crackling fires and fine South African red wines.

Holidays

If you are traveling during the South African school holidays, make sure you book your accommodations well in advance. (Check exact school holiday dates with South African Tourism, as provinces differ, but they usually run 4 weeks in Dec and Jan, 2 weeks in Apr, 3 weeks in June and July, and 1 week in Sept.) Flights can also be impossible to find, particularly over the Christmas holidays. Easter holidays (usually late Mar to mid-Apr) can also be busy, while the Kruger is almost always packed during the winter vacation (mid-June to mid-July). There’s another short school break in spring, from late September to October 7.

Zimbabwe/Zambia

Zimbabwe and Zambia’s climates are similar to that in South Africa’s northern provinces, with a rainy season in summer, mostly between December and mid-March. Summers are warm to hot (late Oct-Dec can be uncomfortable), and winters are mild. Malaria is still a danger in many areas. There are tsetse flies in parts of the Zambezi Valley and in the southeast. And certain rivers, lakes, and dams are infected with bilharzia. Victoria Falls are often at their fullest around mid-April, at the end of the rainy season (Nov-Apr), though this is also when the mist created by the falling water may obscure the view and malaria-carrying mosquitoes are at their most prolific. Temperatures range from 90°F (32°C) in October and November to 60°F (16°C) in June and July. Many think the best time to see the falls is from August to December, when the view is clearer (though the flow of the water is at its lowest). June through December is high season for many of the upmarket lodges, which raise their prices during these months. You are unlikely to be affected by public holidays.

Botswana

Botswana has a pleasant, temperate climate with low humidity, with a maximum mean temperature of 91°F (33°C) in January and a minimum mean temperature of 38°F (4°C) in June. There are effectively two seasons: summer (Sept-Apr), with frequent rains and thunderstorms, and winter (May-Aug), with cold and dry days and nights. Rainfalls make the summer months a great time to visit the delta if you’re interested in birds and plants, but it can get very hot. From April to September, the days are mild to warm, but temperatures drop sharply at night and early in the morning, particularly around June and July. Most consider these 2 months the best time to visit the delta, when the rain that falls on the Angolan bushveld plains seeps down to create what is referred to as the “flood.” At this time, water lilies bloom, countless aquatic creatures frolic in the water, and a huge diversity of game from the surrounding dry areas moves into the delta. You are unlikely to be affected by public holidays.
