Spain

Summary

Summary and Health section – removal of information on Liverpool’s Champions league match with Seville; removal of advice on outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease

There have been large gatherings of people in Barcelona and other areas of the Catalonia region in relation to the political developments there. Further gatherings and demonstrations are very likely to take place in the coming days. They may occur with little or no warning and even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can escalate and turn confrontational. You should exercise caution if you’re in the vicinity. Demonstrations may also cause some disruption and delays to transport services.

The airline and tour operator Monarch went into administration on 2 October 2017. The repatriation flights for non-ATOL protected passengers have now ceased. You can find information and advice on flights, accommodation and reimbursement for expenses incurred on the dedicated website, or by calling the hotline on 0300 303 2800 (if calling from the UK) or +44 1753 330 330 (if calling from outside the UK).

If you need consular assistance above and beyond information on replacement flights or accommodation, please contact your nearest British embassy or consulate.

Temporary restrictions may apply to car use in Madrid on days when air pollution levels are high. When in force, only cars with a number plate ending in an even number are allowed to circulate on even dates, and cars with number plates ending in an odd number on odd dates. Restrictions apply within the city boundaries (within the M30 inner ring road) between 6:30am and 9pm.

Exemptions may apply to cars with multiple occupants (3 people or more), motorbikes and mopeds, hybrid and zero-emission vehicles, those with a disabled badge and taxis. For more information you can follow Madrid Town Hall on Facebook and Twitter, or call the ‘Línea Madrid’ citizen information and support line (in English) on 010 (from Madrid) or +34 915 298 210 (from outside Madrid).

Over 12 million British nationals visit Spain every year. Most visits are trouble-free.

There have been several deaths as a result of falls from balconies. Don’t take any unnecessary risks, especially when under the influence of drink or drugs. See Balcony falls

There have been reports of an increase in holidaymakers being encouraged to submit a claim for personal injury if they have experienced gastric illness during their stay. You can find more information about the action you can take if you have suffered a personal injury on the Citizens Advice website. You should only consider pursuing a complaint or claim if you have genuinely suffered from injury or illness. If you make a false or fraudulent claim, you may face legal proceedings in the UK or Spain.

Terrorists are likely to try to carry out attacks in Spain. See Terrorism

You should apply for a free European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) before you travel. If you already have an EHIC, make sure it hasn’t expired. See Health

Some medical costs aren’t covered by the EHIC. Take out comprehensive travel and medical insurance before you travel.

Be alert to the existence of street crime. Thieves tend to target money and passports so don’t keep them all in one place. Keep a copy of your passport somewhere safe. See Crime

If you’re abroad and you need emergency help from the UK government, contact the nearest British embassy, consulate or high commission.

The Overseas Business Risk service offers information and advice for British companies operating overseas on how to manage political, economic, and business security-related risks.

The Best of Southern Spain Travel

Take the best trip to Spain! Flamenco, bullfights, jerez sherry, olive groves, windmills, castles, Seville orange trees, siestas… all things that come to mind when we think of southern Spain- the most beautiful area of Spain.

Southern Spain Travel.com, an independent travel website, will give you everything important for visiting the key, must see cities. Insider tips, hotels, restaurants, tour informaiton and an overview of each city. Travel to Spain with our advice and have a great time!

The Best Cities in Spain

Don’t get us wrong, all spanish cities are pretty cool. But we think the best are located in the south region, most of which is in the state of Andalucia. There’s a special charm and magical presence that envelops you when you’re here.

In no particular order, here are the key places to visit in southern spain travel-ing.

  • Granada– Located at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountains, it’s home of the Alhambra Palace.
  • Seville – Also called Sevilla, known for its charming nature and moorish influence. They have a wonderful Alcazar, Cathederal and have the best Semana Santa (easter week) and La Feria (spring fair) in the country.
  • Malaga– A key beach going town on Costa Del Sol, east of Gibralter, it’s the birthplace to Antonio Bandera and Pablo Picasso. They have a subtropical mediterranean climate. The town has remains of a roman theatre and ancient phoencian wall.
  • Cadiz – Gorgeous beaches, this shore town boasts the title of Europes oldest city.
  • Jerez de la Frontera – Sherry country, outstanding Bodegas are here, and home to “Tio Pepe” and the Gonzalez Byass winery.
  • Cordoba – Located on the Guadalquivar river this must see town boasts roman history, moorish sytle patios and a magnificant mosque, the Mezquita.
  • Ronda – A gorgeous and charming white hill town with an amazing gorge. Home of the oldest bullring in the country.

Plan Your Spain Vacation

There is no trip planning anxiety here!

Believe me, there’s a lot to do, but we’ll boil it down to just the top of the list. We will guide you to the best!

So whether you are going to stay for one night or ten, you’ll need to know the best options for your trip to Spain.

If you rather have a planned tour, we’ve got info on that too. It’s certainly the easiest way to go as it requires minimal planning beforehand.п»ї Here is a quick overview.

The Best Places to Stay

Travel to spain

The hotels in the south region are so charming. You’ll get the best experience if you stay in a locally run establishment in the heart of the city center. They are simple, but make you feel like a local! If you prefer luxurious accommodations, you’ll find some great picks. Many Spain hotels provide free breakfast and this creates a great start to your day.

Mouth-Watering Spanish Food Restaurants

Travel to spain

I could go on forever about Spain ‘s food. They seem to have quite the knack for the best small dishes that not only satisfy but are pleasing to the eye. My favorite tapas include tortilla de patatas and gazpacho, Andalucia’s regional must-have’s. Adam loves the Jamon Serrano with a nice glass of Sherry from Jerez de la Frontera.

Shop Till’ You Drop

Travel to spain

While I find the shopping a bit expensive at times, I enjoy the unique style that the Spaniards have. I love the way they pair thier clothes together and I always find myself looking for something special to take home. You’ll find the greatest boutiques full of gifts for your friends and family, and to really treat yourself to something special. From food to stylin’ shoes, you’ll find it all in the center of town.

Visit the Local Museums and Attractions

Travel to spain

There are enough things to do and attractions to fill numerous days of your southern spain travel trip. The Moorish and roman influence from the past reflects on the current cities today.

The amazing cathedrals, palaces, roman ruins and gardens are something that is not to be missed.

Experience the Magical Flamenco Dancing Shows

Travel to spain

The flamenco shows are so fun. You feel the passion these dancers and musicians have from just a few feet away.

And let’s not forget, the flamenco garb is something spectacular as well. From the hair to the shoes, it’s quite magical.

Watch Exciting and History Rich Bullfighting

Travel to spain

No matter what your feelings are on bullfighting, you have to respect the culture and history behind it all- It’s pretty amazing! Be sure to tour the bullring museums to see the Matador’s outfits. And if you can catch a show, you won’t regret it.

Spain Vacation Packages

Imagine kicking back to enjoy all that Spain has to offer, imagine checking in to a rustic country home that has been booked for you in advance, imagine uncovering charming Spanish cities. beaches and mountains without having to do all that trip research and preparation beforehand? A vacation package allows you to do just that – exploring a country, reveling in its culture, history and gastronomy without having to stress about trip arrangements, logistics and communications.

As enjoyable and accomplishing as independent travel can be, sometimes booking yourself on a vacation package is just what you need to get away from the daily routine. Let someone else do the legwork if you just don’t have the time or effort to – the tour operator can easily find you the most charming hotel, top restaurants and most interesting attractions to visit. It might not be as cheap as an independent trip, but remember, everything else has been planned for you. All you need is to pack your bags, turn up at the airport and someone will sweep you off your feet and lead you into dreamland.

So if you’re still considering if you should book a Spain vacation package, here are some information that can help you make your decision.

What are included in Spain vacation packages?

Vacation packages in Spain usually pack in most elements you’ll need in a trip: your airfare to and from your destination, all hotels in your destination, transportation. daily tours and meals. When you book a vacation package, you simply pay a one-off amount for the entire package and need not worry about incurring most costs later on during the trip. Extra expenses might include expenditure on alcoholic drinks, upgrades and souvenirs etc. This is what most people like most about a vacation package – once you’ve paid for the trip, you no longer need to worry about forking out more money subsequently. However, to avoid a misunderstanding, you need to make sure the vacation package you’re booking includes all these expenses and that no extra charges will be needed.

Spain holiday packages vary in duration (from 1 week to 1 month), budget (basic or luxury) and focus (could be a cultural, culinary or outdoors package). There is usually a package to suit any type of traveler’s needs, so be sure to consider all of them before making your decision. You’ll find more details below that will help you make a good choice.

What are the advantages of booking a vacation package?

Most travelers choose to book a vacation package mainly because of the ease and convenience. For most of them, going on a holiday or vacation is the only time of the year when they get to completely relax, unwind and enjoy. Having to stress about booking accommodation, arranging transportation and figuring out an itinerary are just too much to handle for a vacation. A true vacation, in many people’s mindset, constitutes an itinerary that has been planned for them and every single detail of the trip taken care of by others.

For some others, booking a vacation package also means that you get to fully explore your destination, making the best out of your short time there. It’s almost like having a friend in your destination to show you around the city’s essential sights and even go deeper into the locals’ favorite haunts. You’ll be guaranteed to see everything on your travel list without worrying that you’re missing out on something.

Another benefit of booking a vacation package may be some savings. If you’re traveling as a group or family, vacation packages can sometimes be cheaper than traveling independently. As part of the package, you may get a discount on your hotel stay, or a lower tour price. This really depends on what kind of traveler you are – if you like to stick to a tight budget or you tend to splurge when abroad, which brings us to the next point:

Who is a Spain vacation package suitable for?

Not everyone likes to book themselves on a vacation package. Some like the thrill of independent travel while others don’t like the price tag that goes along with most vacation packages. But if you look hard enough, you can always find a package that is tailor-made to your needs.

All in all, standard Spain vacation packages are ideal for travelers with a limited amount of time to spend in a location and they want to maximize their experience by doing as much as possible. They also cater to individuals who like learning about history and culture through guided tours and travelers who want to focus on one certain cultural aspect during their vacation. Vacation packages may also suit travelers who are accustomed to the comforts of life and are seeking a degree of luxury.

Which Spain vacation package is suitable for me?

Like we discussed above, regardless of what type of traveler you are, you can usually find a vacation package to suit your needs. To find one that’s right for you, you need to ask yourself what interests you most and what your top priorities are when traveling.

Food lovers might like to sign up for a culinary-focused vacation package that includes culinary tours and even cooking classes. These are extremely popular in Spain. Culture vultures might like to have a deeper focus on Spanish traditions and performing arts in their packages – for instance, you can choose one that includes flamenco spectacles, bullfighting shows or Spanish guitar lessons. Nature lovers can opt for a vacation package that not only brings you to the major cities of Spain, but also to the mountains and nature parks surrounding them.

How do I book a vacation package to Spain?

Once you’ve found a vacation package that meets your needs, it’s easy to book them online or at your nearest travel agent. You can also start by searching for a Spain vacation package using the search widget at the top and bottom of this article. Good luck and happy travels!

Introduction: Spain Travel Guide

Not only is Spain one of the most diverse and visually captivating countries of Europe, but it’s also one of the most addicting! Whether it’s the infectuous Spanish zest for life, the winding medieval streets, the laid-back sidewalk caf s or the endless fascinating Spanish landscapes, it doesn’t take long for visitors to realize that they are helplessly and hopelessly hooked in.

It’s impossible to visit Spain without submerging yourself in its lengthy, multicultural history. In the years between the early Iberian and Celtic tribes and today’s modern democracy. Spain has passed through the hands of Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Carthaginians, Moors and Christians. Steeped in history and antiquity, Roman ruins effortlessly rub shoulders with sumptuous Islamic palaces. turreted medieval castles and jaw-dropping Gothic cathedrals- all of them left behind like cultural footprints in the Spanish sand.

There is no singular Spain – when it comes down to it, there are actually several Spains. The country is divided into 17 autonomous and vastly different communities, each with their own unique landscapes, cities, festivals. traditions and even languages. In fact, Spain actually has not one, but four, official languages.

Just how are the regions so different? The verdant hills and misty pastures of Asturias seem a world away from the sunflower-filled plains of Castilla y Le n. The gypsy passion of Andaluc a ‘s infamous literary heroine C rmen is nothing like the noble – albeit delusional – chivalry of Castilla la Mancha ‘s Don Quijote. The fervent flamenco guitar-strumming in C rdoba bears no resemblance to the soulful bagpipe music echoing through the ancient streets of Santiago de Compostela. Sprawling out upon golden beaches along the Mediterranean coast is a totally different experience from doing the same on the volcanic black sand coves of tropical Tenerife (Islas Canarias ).

Needless to say, Spain is much more than the common travel brochure clich s of Andaluc a-born flamenco and bullfighting. While its regions are extraordinarily different on many levels, Spain as a whole boasts a multi-faceted cultural scene unlike any other. The splendor and incredible preservation of Spain’s architecture is only one demonstration of Spain’s heritage of artistic excellence, attention to detail, and creativity. In fact, the architecture gracing Spain’s streets and squares have led to more UNESCO World Heritage Cities than in any other country!

It’s no wonder that Spain bred geniuses like Diego de Vel zquez, Francisco Goya, Pablo Picasso and Antoni Gaud ! Medieval religious pilgrimages, incredible museums. age old traditional music. delicious food and drink. competitive sports and historic theaters are also a huge presence on the cultural scene.

One facet of Spanish culture that has attracted tons of well-deserved acclaim from around the globe is Spain’s festival calendar. From the religious sobriety of Semana Santa (Holy Week) to the pyrotechnic madness of Las Fallas. the clamoring of the Running of the Bulls, the gaudy costumes of Carnival and the annual tomato-flinging frenzy of La Tomatina. Spaniards have a one-of-a-kind talent for throwing an unforgettable party.

Even outside of festival time, you’re guaranteed to notice that there is always something going on and people are always – and we mean always – on the move. Spaniards are welcoming, enthusiastic and social creatures, so it’s only natural that the Spanish lifestyle boils down to being out and about in the streets, chatting over coffees, strolling arm-in-arm and making the most out of each day. For this very reason, the Spanish schedule seems so off. Meal times are hours later and often last for much longer than in most countries; with dinner often lasting until well past midnight, Spain’s nightlife scene doesn’t kick into high gear until the wee hours of the morning and doesn’t slow down until the sun comes up.

Have we grabbed your attention? Ready to learn more? It’s impossible to know and understand this incredible country in one page- explore the rest of our Spain Guide to discover the history, the culture and the diverse beauty that is Spain.

Traveling to Spain

A safe trip abroad

The Department of State has prepared some useful tips for enjoying a safe trip abroad. This includes Country Specific Information on virtually every country in the world, Travel Alerts and Travel Warnings .

Entry for tourism / business

American citizens can enter Spain or Andorra visa-free for periods of up to three months. Spanish government regulations may require a return or on-going ticket or proof of funds. Should an American citizen wish to remain longer than ninety days, you will be required to obtain an extension of stay from Spanish immigration authorities. This extension, of no more than ninety days, must be requested at a police station at least three weeks before the initial entry period expires. It is only granted under exceptional circumstances. By law, foreigners who have overstayed their permitted time will not be allowed to leave Spain without first obtaining an exit permit from the Directorate of Security of the State in Madrid or from the local police in another city. A fine, commensurate with the time overstayed, may be charged.

Check the expiration date on your passport carefully before traveling to Europe. Entry into any of the 26 European countries in the Schengen area for short-term tourism, a business trip, or in transit to a non-Schengen destination, requires that your passport be valid for at least three months beyond your intended date of departure. If your passport does not meet the Schengen requirements, you may be refused boarding by the airline at your point of origin or while transferring planes. You could also be denied entry when you arrive in the Schengen area. For this reason, we recommend that your passport have at least six months validity remaining whenever you travel abroad. For more information, please see the State Department s Schengen FAQ page.

Should you be considering a stay in Spain longer than three months you should inquire with the Spanish embassy or consulate near your place of residence outside of Spain prior to entry. You may also write directly to the Spanish National Police at Calle Moratin, 43, 28014 Madrid; or check the Spanish Ministry of Interior s website.

Residency and work permits

American citizens wanting to study, reside, or work in Spain must obtain the appropriate visa from the Spanish Embassy or Consulate in their state/country of last residence. After the visa has been issued, foreigners have three months to apply for the corresponding permit with the Spanish authorities in Spain. Obtaining a residence or work permit is a complicated process; since regulations change continually, we suggest that you check the Ministry of Interior s website. or call the Ministry of Interior, within Spain, toll-free at 060. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also manages a website.

Driving in Spain

U.S. citizens visiting Spain who want to drive in Spain must obtain an international driving permit prior to their arrival in Spain. An international driving permit (IDP) translates your state-issued driver s license into 10 languages so you can show it to officials in foreign countries to help them interpret your driver s license. The IDP is not valid by itself and must be carried with your driver s license. Click the following link for more information on driving overseas.

U.S. citizens who are residents of Spain must obtain a valid Spanish driver s license. At this time, there is no agreement between the United States and Spain for the validation of a U.S. driver s license; therefore, holders of a U.S. license must attend a Spanish driving school and take the Spanish exam. You can find more information on the Spanish Traffic Authority website .

Spain: Tips for Planning Travel to Spain

Share your knowledge

Tips for Planning Travel to Spain

These tips are for first time travelers to Spain. Many seem obvious, but one is always surprised at questions new travelers ask in the Trip Advisor forums. One has to do some homework if one’s trip will be one of pleasure and have less stress.

1. Buy a book about travel to Spain. Read it and decide what parts of Spain interest you and which cities you want to visit.

2. Get an idea of the geography of Spain. This is a good article from Wikipedia:

Be aware that Spain is the second largest country in Western Europe (after France) and one of the most mountainous (after Switzerland). The central meseta is a highland plateau and Madrid is on this meseta. Be aware of distances between cities. Google Maps or the Via Michelin website can tell you what these distances are.

3. The best time to travel in Spain is spring and fall because that is when good weather occurs. The months of April, May, June, September, and October are very good for travel. Summer is quite hot, especially in inland cities like Seville, Cordoba, and Madrid. The months of July and August are very crowded in resorts along the Mediterranean, so early reservations for hotels are required for these areas.

If one want to visit cities in northern Spain near the Atlantic, such as San Sebastian, Oviedo, and Santiago de Compostela and the rest of Galicia, the months of July and August are the best. Barcelona, the Costa Brava, Valencia, and the Balearic Islands are best from May to September.

The Costa del Sol and Almeria are the best places to visit during winter because they are the warmest. The Costa del Sol has balmy weather during summer. Almeria hardly gets any rain during the year. Nights in Granada are always cool because it is high up in the mountains. The central plateau gets weather extremes during summer and winter.

There are many weather sites that will give one the average temperatures by month for every city in Spain. It is best to check them before making travel plans. Be careful of traveling during winter, especially if you are driving. Many mountain passes get closed and having chains is very important to have in a car.

It makes no sense to travel to places like Leon, Burgos, Vitoria, Pamplona, and Logroño during winter. They get very cold and have much snow and ice. Not all of Spain is sunny all year long. Check the weather for each place you want to visit before making travel plans. The following site will give one average temperatures by month for each city.

4. During fall, many resorts in the north of Spain and along the Mediterranean have many of their stores and restaurants closed for the season. This may happen in the middle of September. This never happens in the Costa del Sol, which is always open because there are many northern Europeans who migrate during this time and spend winter in the area.

It is also a fallacy that most stores and restaurants close up during summer in big cities. Madrid is a city of 5 million and most stores and restaurants are open all year long.

5. Madrid is in the geographic center of Spain. King Felipe II chose Madrid to be the capital of Spain for this very reason.

The best way to travel from Madrid to other cities is by the high speed train, the AVE. It beats air travel because it is more comfortable than the plane, because you can move around in the train and go to the cafeteria car to eat snacks. Airlines like to restrict movement of passengers within the plane. Spain is now the European country with the largest network of high speed trains. If you have never traveled on a high speed train, you will enjoy the travel on the AVE.

Read Buying Renfe Tickets Online. Study the map which shows what cities that the AVE goes to. You may be able to get the web discounts if you buy early.

If one is to travel between extremities of Spain, such as Malaga and Barcelona, then the plane is better because the time will be much shorter than the train.

Be aware that the AVE still does not go to Granada, so the best way to get to this city may be the plane or the bus.

A Rail Pass will be more expensive than buying tickets at Renfe directly. You cannot get the discounts that Renfe gives.

6. Do not plan to see too much of Spain at one time. Many want to see one new city every day. They may be unaware of the distances between cities and one does not want to be traveling every single day. It is best to stay in cities for at a minimum of two nights, preferably three. That way one can see a city in depth and remember it. Spain has to be savored slowly with time for one to sit at a sidewalk cafe, eating tapas and drinking a glass of wine while one sees the passing parade or contemplates a monument.

7. Most travelers will want to experience Andalusia. From propaganda in foreign countries, Andalusia will be more like what a tourist expects of Spain, being the image of Spain, with women dancing flamenco, and with flowers in their hair. There are many monuments in Andalusia, such as the Alhambra Palace in Granada, the No. 1 tourist attraction of Spain, getting 3 million visitors a year. If you plan to visit the Alhambra, read Buying Alhambra Tickets Online. Cordoba has the Mezquita, and Seville has its Cathedral with the Giralda Tower and many other monuments. Do not forget Malaga, which has many monuments and museums, as well as its beaches and the best weather in Europe.

8. Many say that Spain’s best invention are its tapas. About 30% of visitors say they come to Spain for gastronomy. In most places in Spain one can eat marvelously. One can eat tapas instead of having lunch or dinner and enjoy a wide variety of food. Read the top question in the Trip Advisor forums for each city you want to visit to see if there are articles about good restaurants and tapas places.

9. The best way to get euros is to use an ATM machine. Spain is the European country with the most ATM machines and every block in cities has an ATM machine. Be sure to contact your bank that you will be using your ATM in Spain. The back of your ATM card will show what networks your bank is tied to, so using an ATM machine with the same network will minimize any currency charges. When you use an ATM machine, try to find one inside a bank for better security. Most banks will have an ATM machine inside the bank and another on the sidewalk.

You may want to opt to not purchase Travelers Checks. There very few exchange locations and rates are high. You could lose a great deal in the exchange. Spanish banks will not accept Travelers Checks, nor will businesses. If you do not have an ATM. your best option is either to buy euros from your bank  (the rate of exchange + % they add per dollar + flat order and shipping fee), or take dollars to Spain and exchange them at a bank (the rate of exchange + % they add per dollar or some banks will offer flat fee exchange rates per x number of dollars for euros exchanged). Spanish banks also close for the day typically by 2:30 p.m.  While you can find other exchange locations open after banking hours, exchange rates will be higher.

10. If you plan to rent a car and drive, read the Driving Guide for Foreigners. You will need an International Driving Permit. Be aware that it is almost impossible to find free parking on the street in cities. In big cities a commercial parking garage will cost between 18 and 30 euros a day. Hotels with parking will charge about 11 to 12 euros a night for parking. For Andalusia, check the top questions for parking guides for different cities. Rental Cars are available at any major airport with offices of the big international rental companies such as Hertz, Avis, Europcar. Some local companies received a lot of negative feedback such as Record Rent a Car.

11. You can see Spain with a group tour. However be aware that most tours of Spain will try to allow you to see the most monuments and cities, so they do not leave one with enough free time. One cannot dawdle with these tours. For many older travelers, they may be too fast paced and one may develop health problems because of this. Most of them go by bus, so it is not much fun to be traveling by bus all day. One can see Spain on one’s own without a group tour if one plans properly. One is perfectly safe in Spain by going alone. If one is mature one does not need a chaperone or guide to tell him what to do all day long.

12. Read Money Saving Tips for Spain.

Madrid is a city of great contrasts: the Old City, the Madrid of the Hapsburgs, the Royal Palace, the Puerta de Alcala, the Retiro Park. At night, the city changes gears with its famous Madrid nightlife. The city’s endless energy is hard to resist, and its sociable style invites you to jump right in.

Barcelona981

Barcelona . the old Roman Barcino, is Spain`s second city, always on the biting edge of fashion, architecture, food, style, music and good times. Walk its narrow streets and wonderful plazas, or along the Ramblas, stretching from Plaza de Cataluсa to the Harbor, encompassing the magic of the city: stalls full of books, birds and flowers. The city`s most powerful monuments open a window onto its history: the intricately carved edifices that comprise the medieval Gothic Quarter; the curvilinear modernism (Catalan Art Nouveau) that inspired Gaudн’s Sagrada Familia; and the seminal surrealist works of Picasso and Mirу, found in museums that peg Barcelona as a crucial incubator for 20th-century art. The recent restoration of the port area began with the development of a harbor for the Olympic Games of 1992. New modern squares, designed by leading artists such as Mirу and Barcelу have created a new style alongside Gaudi’s modernist buildings. Now the city is ready to show every visitor how it has been transformed into one of the most moderns and active cities in Europe.

Sagrada Familia, Picasso Museum, La Rambla, Barri Gotic, Park Guell, modernist buildings, Montjuic Hill, Barceloneta and so much more!

Seville1284

Seville is the largest town in the famous Southern province of Andalusia, best known for the impressive Cathedral with its Giralda tower, as well as the Alcazar, which also serves as a visiting residence for the Spanish Royal family. Seville seems to move at half the pace of a normal major city, creating a relaxing and even small-town atmosphere that complements the sevillano way of savoring every moment of life, bite of food and sip of drink. Don`t forget your dancing shoes, because from the moment the sun goes down right up until it comes up again, the bars and clubs of Seville’s nightlife are brimming with festive people, great music, lively conversation and unrivaled excitement.

Cathedral & Giralda, Royal Alcazar, Gold Tower, Barrio Santa Cruz, Archivo de las Indias, Maria Luisa Park, Triana, Fine Arts Museum, Flamenco and so much more.

Asset sales plan secures EU backing for $130 billion Dow, DuPont

Asset sales plan secures EU backing for $130 billion Dow, DuPont merger

(Reuters) – Dow Chemical and DuPont won the blessing of the European Union for their $130 billion merger on Monday by agreeing to sell substantial assets including key research and development activities.

The European Commission had been concerned that the merger of two of the biggest and oldest U.S. chemical producers would leave few incentives to produce new herbicides and pesticides in the future. The deal is one of a trio of mega mergers that will reshape the industry and consolidate six companies into three.

Asset sales would ensure competition in the sector and benefit European farmers and consumers, the Commission said.

“We need effective competition in this sector so companies are pushed to develop products that are ever safer for people and better for the environment,” European Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager said in a statement.

“Our decision today ensures that the merger between Dow and DuPont does not reduce price competition for existing pesticides or innovation for safer and better products in the future.”

The two other big deals in the industry are ChemChina’s [CNNCC.UL] $43 billion bid for Syngenta and Bayer’s acquisition of Monsanto.

Dow and DuPont said they were still on target for $3 billion in cost synergies and $1 billion in growth benefits.

The deal is still to be approved by regulators in the United States, Brazil, China, Australia and Canada, but the companies said they were confident of clearance in all remaining jurisdictions.

“This regulatory milestone is a significant step toward closing the merger transaction, with the intention to subsequently spin into three independent publicly traded companies,” Dow spokeswoman Rachelle Schikorra said in an email.

The EU approval may be a sign that U.S. regulators would follow suit because the agencies have traditionally coordinated on reviews and remedies for large multinational mergers, said Diana Moss, president of the American Antitrust Institute non-profit group.

However, any required asset sales would likely reflect antitrust concerns in the local marketplace.

“In the U.S. there are very high shares in corn and soybean seeds. We would expect those problems to be significant enough for enforcers in the U.S. to remedy them,” Moss said.

Weighty Decision

The 1,000-page decision underlined the significance of the merger. In return for the EU green light, DuPont will divest large parts of its global pesticides business, including its global research and development organization.

The unit makes herbicides for cereals, oilseed rape, sunflower, rice and pasture and insecticides for insect control for fruits and vegetables.

Dow, in turn, will sell two acid co-polymer manufacturing facilities in Spain and the United States, as well as a contract with a third party through which it buys ionomers. The company has already found a buyer in South Korea’s SK Innovation.

“The main surprises here are the inclusion of the pesticides and the exclusion of any kind of seed assets,” Bernstein analysts wrote in a note. The analysts also said they had expected EU to be concerned about the concentration of seed sales, and that they would require Dow to divest its corn seeds business.

European Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager holds a news conference after Dow Chemical gained conditional EU antitrust approval on Monday for their $130 billion merger by agreeing to significant asset sales, one of a trio of mega mergers that will redraw the agrochemicals industry, in Brussels, Belgium March 27, 2017. Yves Herman

“We see the required divestments here as smaller than we originally expected, due to the exclusion of seed assets”.

Vaccines and Medicines

You should be up to date on routine vaccinations while traveling to any destination. Some vaccines may also be required for travel.

Ask your doctor what vaccines and medicines you need based on where you are going, how long you are staying, what you will be doing, and if you are traveling from a country other than the US.

You can get hepatitis B through sexual contact, contaminated needles, and blood products, so CDC recommends this vaccine if you might have sex with a new partner, get a tattoo or piercing, or have any medical procedures.

  • Travelers involved in outdoor and other activities in remote areas that put them at risk for bat bites (such as adventure travel and caving).
  • People who will be working with or around bats (such as wildlife professionals and researchers).

How to Travel to Madrid, Spain

Items you will need

  • Passport Airline tickets

Step 1

Obtain a United States Passport. Pick up an application from your local post office or on the website for the U.S. Department of State. Fill out the application and obtain two photographs per the passport photo instructions. Do not sign the application until you turn it in, as an official must witness your signature. Turn your application in along with the appropriate fee, and bring along proof of identification and citizenship. You can do this at many post office locations. Fees vary depending on whether you obtain a passport book, passport card or both and whether or not your application is a renewal or a first-time application. Apply eight to 12 weeks in advance of your trip to allow time for processing.

Step 2

Purchase your airline ticket. Investigate a variety of options such as travel agents, airline websites and travel websites to find the best deal or use frequent flier miles to obtain a discount. Most people traveling to Madrid choose to fly directly into the Madrid-Bajaras Airport for convenience. No visa is necessary to travel to Spain for business or travel purposes for 90 days or less.

Step 3

Locate suitable accommodations. Madrid offers a wide variety of lodgings for the traveler including the Hotel Ateneo and Hotel Maria Elena Palace for the budget-conscious visitor and the Park Hyatt Villa Magna and the Hesperia Madrid for those who desire luxury and are willing to pay the price.

Dine in a variety of restaurants. Some to choose from include Casa Paco, a Spanish steakhouse; La Trainera for seafood; and La Finca de Susana for a budget lunch. For a bite on the run, follow your nose to locate any of the numerous street vendors selling tasty treats on the street corners.

Visit some of the many attractions available in Madrid. The Palacio Real, a former royal palace now used for occasions of state; the Parque de Atracciones, a theme park of particular interest for families; and the Safari Madrid, an animal park where visitors can view animals in a natural habitat, are just some of the most-visited offerings.

Spain also owns islands: party your heart out in Ibiza; drive the Canary Islands’ Fuerteventura for a hinterland lunar landscape vision. This is a country living very much in the present. Come and enjoy it.

About this Report

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

A year of slow recovery for travel in 2014

After a complicated time for the Spanish economy and the travel market over the review period, 2014 was a better year and a slow pace of recovery was witnessed in many categories. Inbound arrivals in particular posted positive results in 2014 enabling the travel market to regain strength. However, the average expenditure per visitor did not increase at the same level, reflecting a new trend in which travellers have begun to take trips again albeit with a more limited budget.

Online sales continue to grow in 2014

Online sales continued to grow in 2014 in every category. As social media and new online marketing tools are developed and improved constantly, the online channel was able to reach an increasing number of customers, providing them with a very practical tool to buy and compare various options. Advertising and marketing was strongly targeted and new and more varied payment options were available for customers. Both direct sales and intermediaries sales benefited from the growth of online sales. However, competing against strong search engines and intermediaries was not easy and companies needed to remain at the forefront to remain competitive in this channel.

Low cost services have been part of the market for some time. However, after the period of economic crisis, the concept became even stronger. In 2014, several companies across the travel market including in accommodation, car rental, cruises and airlines, such as Iberia Express, Norwegian Airlines, Transavia and Europcar, among others, modified their policies and services towards this growing trend in order to remain competitive and to satisfy one of the most dynamic trends in the market.

In a market as strongly competitive as travel and tourism, in which sometimes companies are limited by reduced budgets among segments of consumers, especially in 2014 when the economy was slowly recovering, the customer experience was a key differential and retention factor. Most of the categories in travel focused their attention on this concept when defining strategies in 2014. Companies aimed to offer their customers unique experiences intended for high-end segments, even if they were on a limited budget. Different approaches were taken here. The auto check-in service of some airlines or the digitalisation of hotel services were key examples of this trend.

Technology is expected to be one of the most important drivers in the travel market over the forecast period. On the one hand, the development and improvement of online tools for searching, advertising, selling and building a stronger bond with customers is expected. On the other hand, the introduction of technology to the services provided by airlines, hotels, and car rentals, among others, is likely to increase, following the global trend in which consumers are more attracted to these kinds of experiences.

Why Take a Guided Tour?

By Damian Corrigan. Spain Travel Expert

Damian is a travel writer and consultant. Damian started visiting Spain in 1989, to visit his grandparents, who lived in Javea. He moved to Spain in 2003 and has lived here most of the time since. Apart from writing about Spain full time since 2006, he also works with tour groups, bars and hotels, helping them with their itineraries, food and drinks menus and promotion. Whether you need to know where to learn Spanish in Spain or how to serve the perfect gin and tonic . Damian can help you.

As soon as Damian arrived in Spain he found that his love of music, food, history and art would be satisfied by this great country. As a keen guitar player, he found flamenco to be one of the most exciting forms of music, and the wonders of paella, gazpacho, tortilla and Iberian ham satisfied his love of food. He has traveled extensively around Spain.

Damian was working in Madrid during the terrorist attacks of March 11 and Prince Felipe’s marriage to Letizia Ortiz, two of the most monumental moments in recent Spanish history. He has also wrestled with the bureaucracy of opening bank accounts, getting registered as a Spanish resident and filing a police report and he knows the Spanish health care system well after spending a month in a Marbella hospital with a burst appendix!

Damian currently divides his time between exploring and writing about Spain and setting up a gourmet drinks tour company.

Maps and Information you need to know about visiting Spain

(Map Notes: Spanish Cities in brown have detailed travel information on this site. Cities on the map which have directories if tourism information are in black.)

Destinations in Spain

Tarragona, Spain

Tarragona Spain Visitors Guide – Near enough to Barcelona to make either city a day trip.

For more destinations in Spain, see:

Spain in Pictures

Spain – Weather and Climate

Spain enjoys a moderate climate. In Bilbao. for example, the average temperature varies from 49 degrees F in January to 70 in August. For an overview of temperatures and rainfall throughout the year as well as current weather conditions in some of Spain’s major tourist destinations, see Spain Travel Weather and Climate .

Spain – Transportation

Spain is served by an extensive rail system. See our rail map for the major routes and train information.

Spain Rail Passes can save you money if your vacation involves days with long train rides.

There is no national bus service in Spain. Many small cities in Spain have access to the larger cities through a local bus system. Routes and Timetables for the local buses are found at bus stations and stops. You can buy a ticket on the bus or in advance from tobacco shops (estancos).

The two largest Bus companies serving Spain are Autocares Julia and Eurolines .

Spain – Eating in Spanish Restaurants

In the summer, Spanish eating habits can be daunting for the tourist, especially one just arriving from overseas. Lunch and dinner are served later here than in the rest of Europe, restaurants often opening as late as 3pm for lunch and 8 or 9pm for dinner. Many restaurants in metropolitan areas have started to cater to the overseas crowd and offer continuous opening hours. The traditional remedy for the lateness of meals was to eat small plates called tapas at bars that were open all day, either as a way to keep hunger away until the restaurants opened or to make a whole meal out of appetizers–not a bad way to go. Bellying up to a Tapas bar is a great way to meet people.

Many travelers report not finding enough vegetables in restaurants to keep them happy. This is not the case when you eat meals in people’s homes–it’s a quirk of the restaurant system. See Eating in Spain for more.

Tipping in Spanish Restaurants

Meals include a service charge, but tipping is common. 10% is a substantial tip.

Accommodations in Spain

Spain has a wide range of accommodations. There are usually hotels near train stations, some budget, a few seedy. You may inspect a hotel before committing to it.

If you have a family or are planning to spend a long time in one city, a vacation rental might be to your advantage. HomeAway offers over 30,000 vacation rentals in Spain (book direct with the owner).

We like to use the user-rated hotel guide Venere to find popular Spain hotels .

Hotels in Spain are classified by stars according to their facilities and not necessarily their charm. For more on the hotel rating system, see our article: Hotels and their Star Ratings .

An excellent glossary of Spanish Accommodation terms is found on our Spanish Language site: Lodging and Hotel Terms .

Language in Spain

The language spoken in Spain is Spanish. However, there are variants spoken that include Euskara, spoken in the basque regions; Catalan, spoken in parts of Spain, Andorra, France and Sardinia; Galician, and other languages. An excellent discussion of these is provided by Gerald Erichsen in his article: Spain’s Linguistic Diversity .

Foreign Languages for the Tourist gives a list of resources for learning just enough language to get along. Page two of that article is an account of going to language school in Perugia, Italy. I recommend undertaking such an experience in Spain if you’re interested in the Spanish language and people.

There is a good list of Spanish Language Schools here .

Currency in Spain

Spain uses the Euro–Symbol . At the time the Euro came into use, its value was set to 166.386 Spanish Pesetas. [more on the Euro ]

Spain – Siesta!

The siesta period is from 1:30 to 4:30. Stores close but restaurants stay open in the late afternoon, closing usually at 4:30.

The Requirements for Travel to Spain #one #travel

To ensure a smooth encounter with Spanish customs and border patrol officials, U.S. travelers should bring the proper travel documentation. At a minimum, all U.S. visitors to Spain must hold a valid U.S. passport. This includes U.S. travelers entering Spain via another European Union state, such as Portugal or France. Train and airline officials are required to check passports on trips that cross national borders. Depending on the nature and duration of your visit to Spain, you may need a visa as well.

U.S. Passport

A valid U.S. passport is always required for international travel to and from the United States. If the passport expires before you return to the United States, you will find it difficult to re-enter the country. Spain is one of the 24 European nations party to the Schengen agreement, which mandates that the passports of all U.S. visitors be valid for at least three months beyond their period of stay in Spain. Under the Schengen agreement, U.S. citizens traveling to Spain for business or tourist purposes may remain in the country for up to 90 days without a visa.

When a Visa is Needed

According to the U.S. Department of State, U.S. citizens visiting Spain for longer than 90 days need to apply for a visa. Travelers planning to study at a university or work during their stay in the Spain also must apply for a visa, even if the visit is shorter than 90 days.

Traveling with Children

Customs and border patrol officials across the globe have launched efforts to curb international child abduction. If you are traveling abroad with children who are not your own, the U.S. Department of State recommends bringing along proof of permission for the child to travel. Obtain a notarized letter of permission from the child s parent(s) or legal guardian, which includes the names of the parent(s) and their home addresses and telephone numbers.

12Madrid965In the last few years, Madrid has gained the reputation of being one of Europe’s most active and attractive cities for its nightlife and cultural activities. Capital of Spain since 1562, Madrid’s museums host, among others, Dalнs, Mirуs and Picasso’s Guernica.

Spain

Oh Spain… how you dazzle us with architectural feats and artistic treats, enrich us with historic treasures and nourish us with sangria and tapas! From charismatic cities full of boisterous bars and hip galleries, to sleepy villages dotted with run-down farmhouses and olive groves, Spain never fails to open up travellers’ eyes, minds and hearts.

Spain trip reviews

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways to experience a country is by eating! Whether you re sampling street food, savouring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

Things to try in Spain

Who would have thought that little bowls of seafood, pork, beef, vegetables and olives could be so filling? Have fun hopping to different tapas bars, trying classics like patatas bravas, croquetas, pulpo a la gallega and jamon serrano.

Don’t leave without trying a glass of tempranillo or sherry, both native to Spain. The Jerez area is famous for its sherry varieties, so have fun visiting local cellars for some taste testing.

Although Spain has a strong wine culture, local beer is still a great choice, especially on a hot summer’s day. Try Moritz, San Miguel or Estrella for a refreshing afternoon beach treat.

Spaniards serve their coffee espresso-style, which is perfect considering the amount of caffeine required to stay up partying with the locals until the sun rises.

For gorgeous beaches, sangria under the sun, rich cultural history, and a vibrant urban scene, only one choice fits the bill. Spain.

If you’ve got an appetite for a vacation filled with gorgeous beaches, sangria under the sun, and a vibrant urban scene, then there’s one choice that’ll fit the bill, Spain.

Hi, I’m Patty Kim. More than 50 million people visit Spain every year, to gulp down the sunshine, the music, the art, the bold architecture, and the platefuls of paella that make up Spain’s contagious passion for living.

In 1975, after 35 years of General Franco’s Fascist regime, King Juan Carlos I took power and propelled Spain into an era of freedom and democracy. Today, cities like the capital, Madrid, and Barcelona are cultural centers, buzzing with life day and night.

And at over 2 thousand feet, Madrid is Europe’s highest capital. Located here, is the royal palace, the largest in Western Europe. It became the royal residence in 1561, was rebuilt after a fire in 1734 and today, is used only for ceremonial purposes. Spain’s rich history can be seen all over Madrid; from the Plaza de Cibeles to Don Quixote to the Museo del Prado where you’ll find works by Velasquez, Goya, and El Greco.

Northeast of Madrid is Barcelona, the second largest city in Spain as well as the capital of the Autonomous Community of Catalonia. In the streets of Barcelona, not only will you hear Catalan as well as Spanish but you’ll also be surrounded by the work of artists like Mir , Picasso and Gaud . Architect Antoni Gaud ’s buildings can be seen all throughout the city. His last project, Sagrada Familia, is a massive church that has been under construction since 1882. Some people expect it to be completed around 2041.

One of the most delectable ways to get a sense of Spain is through “tapas,” traditional appetizers that keep you going until dinner, which rarely happens before 10 pm.

Bullfighting is a fiber deeply woven into the Spanish cultural tapestry. With origins dating back thousands of years it is both ritualistic and ceremonial. While protested by some as a cruel pastime, brave souls who wish to experience bullfighting firsthand should venture to a Plaza de Toros, or Bullring, the most famous of which are in Madrid and Seville, where only the best matadors are allowed to flaunt their artistry. That’s right. For fans, bullfighting is not a sport but an art.

Another deeply Spanish cultural performance is Flamenco. Flamenco is a form of song, guitar playing and dance that embodies the complex soul of Andalucia, a region in southern Spain. If you listen closely, you can hear Arab, oriental and gypsy influences blending together to produce this world renown sound. And if you’re really lucky, you might catch a dash of flamenco not on a stage but in its rawest, most authentic form as a spontaneous outburst late at night in a backstreet bar. Most experts believe Flamenco originated between the 9th and 14th century when gypsies arrived from north India, via Egypt, and Eastern Europe and fused their music with cultural arrivals from North Africa.

In addition to influencing Spanish music, the North African Moorish presence in Spain has shaped Andalucian architecture. In Granada, Alhambra, derived from the Arabic for red” is a palace and fortress complex built for Moorish monarchs. The Mosque, in Cordoba, though now a Catholic Cathedral, once stood as the second largest mosque in the world.

Wherever your travels may take you in Spain, most likely at every turn, you’ll encounter that Spanish spirit, a passionate force, with a flair for drama.
