What are the advantages and disadvantages of distance learning?

The main advantage of distance learning is that it presents students with a flexible alternative to traditional classroom-based education.

Here are some of the other advantages:

  • It gives students greater access to education. Students who are unable to attend classes due to disabilities, or due to family responsibilities, may be able to further their studies via distance learning.
  • It is more affordable. Students can save money by not having to travel to classes.
  • It gives students the option to work and study at the same time. Because distance learning students are free to study according to their own schedules, they can easily fit in their studies around their work commitments.

Despite all the advantages, there are also a number of disadvantages to studying via distance learning:

Distance learning is a great option for those who want to further their studies, but are unable to attend classes on a regular basis. However, distance learning is not the right choice for everyone – it is best suited to those who are self-disciplined and self-motivated.

Distance learning might be the right choice for you if:

  • You have a disability that makes it difficult for you to attend classes.
  • You have work or family responsibilities that prevent you from attending classes.
  • You live far away from a campus, or you have problems with getting transport to a campus.
  • You are self-disciplined and self-motivated.
  • You have good time management skills.
  • You are able to work independently, and you don’t need someone to check up on your progress all the time.
  • You prefer to work on your own, rather than being surrounded by other students.

Educational Technology Master’s and Doctorate Degrees at a Glance

Whether you’re a teacher who’d like to increase your use of technology in the classroom, or you desire a career designing educational media, consider a master’s degree or doctorate in educational technology. Two types of doctoral degrees are commonly available in educational technology: the PhD and the EdD (Doctor of Education). The PhD and EdD are very similar, but the PhD is usually more research-oriented, while the EdD may focus on applications utilized by practitioners.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), instructional coordination jobs, which are suitable for educational technologists, are expected to grow at a faster-than-average rate of 20% between 2010 and 2020. Students who earn a master’s degree could find work in this expanding field, while PhD or EdD graduates can pursue positions as university faculty members. Beyond working in schools, an educational technology degree could offer entry into fields such as corporate training.

Online programs granting a master’s degree in educational technology are readily available. Programs are offered in completely online formats with no residency requirement, online programs with residency requirements and hybrid or mixed programs offering some required classes online. What Are Online Based or Distance Education classes?

Online-based courses, also called Distance Education classes, may take two different forms:

Online classes are taken exclusively over the Internet. Please note that, while some online courses provide all instructional content over the Internet, others may require some on-campus meetings. Please see the course schedule or WebAdvisor for more information.

Hybrid classes meet both on campus and online. Think of them as a combination or blending of online classes and face-to-face classes.

In a hybrid class, you will attend meetings on campus during the dates and times listed in the schedule of classes. Since the on-campus portion of hybrid classes could take place at any of our three colleges (Riverside City, Norco or Moreno Valley), hybrid classes are listed in the schedule by the college where the on-campus meetings will take place.

Are there Face-to-Face classes that use the Internet?

Web-Enhanced classes are traditional face-to-face classes that are supplemented with course websites and the use of Internet resources. Unlike hybrid or fully-online classes, all web-enhanced class meetings take place on campus.

Registration for Summer 2016 is now open!

Travel Study programs combine the excitement of study abroad with the academic rigor of classes taught by UCLA faculty.

UCLA Travel Study is open to students from any college or university. Financial aid and scholarships are available for qualified students.

Registration for Travel Study summer 2016 closes on April 1, 2016, at 5pm. Please keep in mind the following enrollment steps:

1: Complete the registration form and submit all required information, including a (non-refundable) $300 deposit. This is the first down payment towards your program fee and holds your space until April 1.

2: Final payment for Travel Study is due on April 1, except for students who are applying for financial aid. Please note that after April 1, 2016 there will be no refunds offered for program fees.

Financial aid students must submit documents specific to their type of aid to UCLA by April 1 in order to be eligible for aid and to maintain their space on the program. Click here for full instructions. ALL students applying for financial aid must pay their fees at least 5 calendar days before the start of their program.

3: Certain programs require supplemental documents, such as housing questionnaires and applications, passport scans, etc, in order to participate in the program. If these have been requested please submit them in a timely manner.

4: You will receive pre-departure information in the spring quarter, including arrival instructions, pre-departure orientation date, an information packet from your professor, link to your program Facebook group and other important details. We will notify you when important details become available, but please also retrieve your application periodically to check for new documents.

Positive Psychology: The Benefits of Living Positively

Positive psychology often is passed off as pop psychology or New Age-y by those who haven’t actually looked into it.

The actual theory behind positive psychology was defined in 1998 by Martin Seligman and Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi [1] and looks at all aspects of a person’s psychology. It does not discount traditional psychology, nor supersede it. Rather than viewing psychology purely as a treatment for the malign, however, it looks at the positive. Positive psychology is a recognized form of therapy and is offered by some counselors and psychologists.

Psychology has always been interested in where people’s lives have gone wrong, and what has resulted because of it [2]. Illnesses such as depression are well-documented and patterns of depressive behavior well-known. However, until recently, what makes people happy and how they achieve inner happiness and well-being has been a mystery.

Practitioners of positive psychology study people whose lives are positive and try to learn from them, in order to help others achieve this state of happiness [3]. It is a scientific study and not remotely hippie-ish, despite its connotations.

Positive thinking is one aspect of positive psychology. Surrounding yourself with a great lifestyle and material goods may seem to lead to happiness, but how you really feel is governed by what goes on inside your head. When you go out of your way to think positively, you actually purge yourself of negative self-talk. [1]

Negative self-talk is one of the biggest barriers to positive thinking. People become so accustomed to negative thinking that their conscious mind will pull them down, even when they have done nothing wrong. These people become insecure, overly apologetic and indecisive. Worse still, they open the door to numerous stress-related problems.

Negative thinkers have four common mindsets:

Many negative thinkers will pull the negatives out of a situation and focus on them. Sometimes these people will see only the negative in a situation, to the point where they deny any positive.

  • Personalizing.
    Some people make every tragedy about themselves. They will personalize every negative thing and assume that bad things happen because they are unlucky, or as a result of something they did or didn’t do. They will often construct negative situations with perfect logic, providing plausible reasons why negative things are either their fault or set out to hurt them.
  • Catastrophizing.
    This involves anticipating the worst. Some people even precipitate it. They can turn a slightly awkward interaction into an overreaction, making the situation worse. If something negative does happen, they will use it to validate their negative assumptions.
  • Polarizing.

    This type of negative thinker sees things as black or white. Either a situation is perfect or it is a catastrophe. This type of negative thinking can affect every area of a person’s life. Its effects can be both psychological and physical. By practicing positive thinking, you can actually stave off medical conditions and reap the benefits of having a positive outlook on life.

  • Depression is complicated illness with physical and mental health elements. It would be flippant to suggest that someone with a positive outlook will not encounter depressive feelings.

    However, positive psychology can be beneficial in treating depression. It can equip sufferers with the tools to stop downward spirals when they begin and help them to see the positive aspects to their lives. It can also help to stop the negative thinking habits that are common in depression. [4]

    Scientific studies also show that there is a direct link between stress and the immune system. When a person is experiencing a period of stress and negativity, his or her body is less able to mount an inflammatory response to attacks from bacteria and viruses. This results in an increase in infections such as the common cold and cold sores. [5] Having a positive outlook on life also equips people better for dealing with serious illness. Tackling diseases such as cancer with optimism and self-belief has shown to have a beneficial effect on recovery and ability to tolerate treatment.

    Among the other health benefits listed above, positive thinkers have a lower incidence of cardiovascular disease. They tend to have lower blood pressure than those who do not engage in positive thinking. The health benefits extend to the emotional side, too. optimists will have better physical and psychological well-being, and better skills for coping with stress and hardship.

    It is important to remember that simply having a positive mindset won’t actually stop bad things from happening. But it does give you the tools to better deal with bad situations. Sometimes your coping skills come down to nothing more than refusing to give in to your negative side and your fears. For some people, positive thinking comes quite naturally. For others, seeking professional help is necessary to get them on the right track.

    Our virtual learning environment, CampusMoodle offers students flexibility of where and when they can study, offering full and open access to tutors and other class members. Students have the benefit of being part of a group of learners with the invaluable opportunity to participate in active, group-related learning within a supportive online community setting. The online campus provides students with course materials and depending on the course it also includes:

    • Applicants normally hold a 2:2 undergraduate honours degree or its equivalent.

    English Language

    Consultancy Project (full-time only)
    For full-time students, there is a consultancy project opportunity which will help you gain valuable experience in real-life project management. The consultancy project will normally last between 6-8 weeks and run during the final semester, July to September.

    Your consultancy project will enable you to put into practice and apply the knowledge you have gained during the course. Our students have found this aspect of the course to be an invaluable networking opportunity, allowing them to build and extend upon their theoretical knowledge by gaining an understanding of client expectations. You should use the opportunity to make business contacts for networking in your future and career.

    Gulliver’s Travels Study Guide

    Gulliver s Travels, a misanthropic satire of humanity, was written in 1726 by Jonathan Swift. Like many other authors, Swift uses the journey as the backdrop for his satire. He invents a second author, Captain Lemuel Gulliver, who narrates and speaks directly to the reader from his own experience. The original title of Swift s novel was Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World. In Four Parts. By Lemuel Gulliver, First a Surgeon, and then a Captain of several Ships.

    Gulliver s name probably is an allusion to King Lemuel of Proverbs 31, who was a weak-minded prophet. Swift may also be connecting his character to a common mule, a half-ass, half-horse animal that is known for being stubborn and stupid. A gull is a person who is easily fooled or gullible. At the same time, Gulliver represents the everyman with his average intelligence and general good humor. The reader is able to identify with him and join him in his travels.

    Even though Swift constantly alludes to events that were happening while he was alive, the story rings true today, bringing light to our own societal issues and to patterns of human nature. Throughout Gulliver s voyages, Swift goes to great lengths to scrutinize, parody, and satire various aspects of human, and often English, society. He does this in two ways, first by comparing humanity s ways with those of cultures decidedly beneath it (such as the Yahoos and the Lilliputians ); second, by comparing humanity with cultures that are far superior in intellect and political ideals (such as the Houyhnhnms ).

    Gulliver embarks on four distinct journeys, each of which begins with a shipwreck and ends with either a daring escape or a congenial decision that it is time for Gulliver to leave. The societies Gulliver comes into contact with help him (and the reader) to examine his own culture more closely. When Gulliver s Travels was published in 1726, this examination of English culture was not appreciated. The novel was highly controversial because of the light in which it presented humanity-and more specifically, the English. When the novel was first published, Swift s identity was hidden because of the novel s volatile nature. The people who saw that the book made it into print also cut out a great deal of the most politically controversial sections, about which Swift became extremely frustrated. In a letter written under the pseudonym of Gulliver, Swift shows his annoyance with the edits made to his novel without his consent: I hope you will be ready to own publicly, he writes, whenever you shall be called to it, that by your great and frequent urgency you prevailed on me to publish a very loose and uncorrect account of my travels. But I do not remember I gave you power to consent that anything should be omitted, and much less that anything should be inserted. The version of the novel read today is complete.

    Part of what has helped Gulliver s Travels to persevere since Swift s time has been its appeal to people of all ages. The book has been read by countless children and has been made into more than one children s movie. At the same time, it has been widely critiqued and studied by literary scholars and critics, politicians, and philosophers. In addition, much like the works of Shakespeare, the comedy of the novel has something for people of all intellectual levels, from toilet humor to highbrow satires of political processes and of ideas.

    Do Global Business students have to study abroad?

    I’m not a Global Business student. Can I still study abroad?

    Yes – they need to either have one semester-long exchange program, one international internship, or two JGE courses.

    Can students complete their study abroad and their internship requirement at the same time?

    Yes! International internships are encouraged!

    What semester is the best to study abroad?

    • The ideal time to study abroad is Sophomore/Junior year. NO student (Undergraduate or Graduate) can participate in an exchange program or Third Party Program during their last two semesters at UTD.
    • Students can participate in JGE Courses and International Internships during their last two semesters, but it is not recommended.

    What are the GPA requirements?

    • Exchange All students must have 3.0 minimum GPA.
    • International Internship, Third Party Students must have a minimum 2.0 GPA.
    • JGE Courses Undergraduate students must have a minimum 2.0 GPA. There is not a minimum GPA requirement for graduate students.

    What other requirements are there?

    • JGE Courses – There are no minimum UTD credit hours to participate in a JGE Course.
    • Exchange, Third Party, International Internship:
      • Undergrad students must have a minimum 30 UTD credit hours
      • Graduate students must have a minimum 9 UTD credit hours
      • Freshman/Sophomore transfer students must have a minimum 30 UTD credit hours
      • Junior/Senior transfer students must have a minimum 15 UTD credit hours

    I’ve applied online. Now what?

    I’m a fast-track student. Are there any requirements I should know about?

    Just like any other student, fast-track students cannot study abroad their last two semesters of their undergraduate careers. If students are going to fast track, they should consider doing an international internship or JGE Course.

    I’m about to graduate! If a student only has 2 (or less) semesters left, but they need to complete a study abroad requirement, what should they do?

    • In this case, the student should consider doing two separate JGE courses.
    • If they have time, they could also consider doing an international internship.

    Are there any specific UTD scholarships available?

    • Yes! JSOM students have two ways to apply for study abroad scholarships at UTD: The International Education Fund Scholarship (IEFS) and the JSOM Travel Scholarship. However, in order to be eligible for the JSOM Travel Scholarship, the student must first have applied for the IEFS.
      • JSOM Travel Scholarship – $200 a week for Exchange/Third Party/International Internships; $500 for a JGE

    What other scholarships are available?

    • McDermott Terry Scholarships fully fund international internships.
    • National Merit Scholars get $6,000 grant for international travel.
    • Students receiving a Pell Grant are eligible for $5000 Benjamin A Gilman International Scholarship.
    • The Davidson Management Honors Program has funding available for their students.

    Will my scholarships such as the Academic Excellence Scholarship (AES) still apply even if I’m spending a semester abroad for an exchange program?

    • As long as the student still meeting the GPA requirements and enrolled in the required amount of hours, his/her scholarships such as AES will still apply.

    According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), financial professionals who work in securities, commodities and financial services, including acquisitions, could expect about a 12% increase in job opportunities from 2014-2024, which is faster than average. The BLS notes that financial analysts with earned median salaries of $80,310 as of 2015.

    Although the BLS expects faster than average job growth, this does not mean that acquisition analyst jobs will be easy to come by. The reasonably high income of these positions attract a large number of applicants. The best way to attract employers is to hold relevant experience, certifications and/or further education.

    Travel Study programs combine the excitement of study abroad with the academic rigor of classes taught by UCLA faculty.

    UCLA Travel Study is open to students from any college or university. Financial aid and scholarships are available for qualified students.

    Registration for Travel Study summer 2016 closes on April 1, 2016, at 5pm. Please keep in mind the following enrollment steps:

    1: Complete the registration form and submit all required information, including a (non-refundable) $300 deposit. This is the first down payment towards your program fee and holds your space until April 1.

    2: Final payment for Travel Study is due on April 1, except for students who are applying for financial aid. Please note that after April 1, 2016 there will be no refunds offered for program fees.

    Financial aid students must submit documents specific to their type of aid to UCLA by April 1 in order to be eligible for aid and to maintain their space on the program. Click here for full instructions. ALL students applying for financial aid must pay their fees at least 5 calendar days before the start of their program.

    3: Certain programs require supplemental documents, such as housing questionnaires and applications, passport scans, etc, in order to participate in the program. If these have been requested please submit them in a timely manner.

    The author of these Travels, Mr. Lemuel Gulliver, is my ancient and intimate friend; there is likewise some relation between us on the mother s side. About three years ago, Mr. Gulliver growing weary of the concourse of curious people coming to him at his house in Redriff, made a small purchase of land, with a convenient house, near Newark, in Nottinghamshire, his native country; where he now lives retired, yet in good esteem among his neighbours.

    Although Mr. Gulliver was born in Nottinghamshire, where his father dwelt, yet I have heard him say his family came from Oxfordshire; to confirm which, I have observed in the churchyard at Banbury in that county, several tombs and monuments of the Gullivers.

    Before he quitted Redriff, he left the custody of the following papers in my hands, with the liberty to dispose of them as I should think fit. I have carefully perused them three times. The style is very plain and simple; and the only fault I find is, that the author, after the manner of travellers, is a little too circumstantial. There is an air of truth apparent through the whole; and indeed the author was so distinguished for his veracity, that it became a sort of proverb among his neighbours at Redriff, when any one affirmed a thing, to say, it was as true as if Mr. Gulliver had spoken it.

    By the advice of several worthy persons, to whom, with the author s permission, I communicated these papers, I now venture to send them into the world, hoping they may be, at least for some time, a better entertainment to our young noblemen, than the common scribbles of politics and party.

    This volume would have been at least twice as large, if I had not made bold to strike out innumerable passages relating to the winds and tides, as well as to the variations and bearings in the several voyages, together with the minute descriptions of the management of the ship in storms, in the style of sailors; likewise the account of longitudes and latitudes; wherein I have reason to apprehend, that Mr. Gulliver may be a little dissatisfied. But I was resolved to fit the work as much as possible to the general capacity of readers. However, if my own ignorance in sea affairs shall have led me to commit some mistakes, I alone am answerable for them. And if any traveller hath a curiosity to see the whole work at large, as it came from the hands of the author, I will be ready to gratify him.

    As for any further particulars relating to the author, the reader will receive satisfaction from the first pages of the book.

    Finally, there’s a scientific answer to that magic number of days before a flight when tickets are at their cheapest.

    The answer? Are you ready? Are you reeeally ready?

    Fifty-four days before takeoff is, on average, when domestic airline tickets are at their absolute lowest price. And if you don’t hit 54 days on the head, you should usually book between 104 to 29 days before your trip — within the “prime booking window ” — for the lowest possible prices. In this window, ticket prices typically hover within $10 of the lowest price they’ll ever reach .

    At least that’s what the data from 2013 tells us.

    The folks at CheapAir spent the last year analyzing over four million airline trips. They tracked ticket prices from 320 days before takeoff all the way up until the day before, calculating precisely which day each one hit its lowest point.

    Air travelers tend to believe they’ll find the lowest of low prices when they book “at the last minute.” This, according to all present data, is one hundred percent false.

    The researchers found that, on average, a ticket was at its highest price on the day before the flight. The second-highest price was two days before the flight, the third-highest was three days before… and so on, all the way to 13 days before the flight.

    This pretty much solidifies the rule that you should NEVER book your ticket within two weeks of a flight… a mistake that 36 percent of CheapAir users made when planning their trips.

    While the researchers found that 54 days was indeed the magic number for booking on average, they’re quick to point out that this isn’t a hard-and-fast rule. your flight’s “best price” window depends a lot on the specific trip you’re taking.

    If you’re going somewhere incredibly popular at an incredibly popular time — like spring break in Florida, for example — you should book well before the “prime booking window” begins. When there’s constant, strong demand for a flight, the researchers explain. airlines have no incentive to lower ticket prices as time goes on. The same principle holds true for flights to hard-to-reach airports in small cities: there’s little airline competition here, so ticket prices don’t drop nearly as much over their lifespan.

    Foreign countries are incredibly popular destinations with hard-to-reach airports, so the researchers suggest booking much earlier than the 54 days recommended for domestic flights.
