    Thermal Imaging
    Thermography is the use of an infrared imaging and measurement camera to see and measure thermal energy emitted from an object. Thermography cameras can identify problem areas that can’t be seen with the naked eye, detecting hidden water leaks.     Linfo is a free and open source, cross-platform server statistics UI/library which displays a great deal of system information. It is extensible, easy-to-use (via composer) PHP5 library to get extensive system statistics programmatically from your PHP application. It’s a Ncurses CLI view of Web UI, which works in Linux, Windows, *BSD, Darwin/Mac OSX, Solaris, and Minix.

    It displays system info including CPU type/speed ; architecture, mount point usage, hard/optical/flash drives, hardware devices, network devices and stats, uptime/date booted, hostname, memory usage (RAM and swap, if possible), temperatures/voltages/fan speeds and RAID arrays.

    Requirements:

    • PHP 5.3
    • pcre extension
    • Linux /proc and /sys mounted and readable by PHP and Tested with the 2.6.x/3.x kernels

    How to Install Linfo Server Stats UI/library in Linux

    First, create a Linfo directory in your Apache or Nginx web root directory, then clone and move repository files into /var/www/html/linfo using the rsync command as shown below:

    There are two types of security systems installed. Most home security systems installed today are wireless security systems and a much smaller percent of installations are hard wired systems typically installed in homes that have been pre-wired for a security system. Most hard wired security systems are “hybrid” which means they can communicate with wireless security devices as well.

    A “wireless security system” is one that communicates to wireless security devices. A “cellular security system ” is one that sends emergency alarm signals and communicates to the ADT Central Station via a GSM Cellular unit that is part of the security system. A “wireless security system” can not have hard wired security devices connected to it, but a “hard wired security system” can operate both hard wired and wireless security devices. Both “wireless security systems” and “hard wired security systems” can be used for standard land line phone communication or cellular communication.

    For homeowners who have existing security systems, it is important to note that existing wireless security equipment will only be able to communicate to control panels of the same manufacture type. Most security systems are manufactured by DSC, Honeywell/Ademco and GE. Many security systems are branded by monitoring companies like ADT but 90% of these branded systems were manufactured by Honeywell/Ademco, GE and DSC.     Backup power for the security system in case of a power outage. Battery backup last for about 48 hours and then recharges once power is back on.

This provides phone-line cut protection and customers do not need home phone service to have a monitored alarm system. With cellular primary the customer never needs to worry about making changes to their phone service either. Cellular communication is also faster than dial-up.

    6. Two-Way Voice Module, Speaker and Microphone

    Module: Central Processing Unit (CPU) for the two-way voice communication.

    Allows ADT Central Station Operator to audio verify an alarm event, voice challenge an intruder and gives the homeowner the ability to communicate with central station handsfree in the event of a police, medical or fire emergency.

    7. Security System Phone Jack

    Used for standard digital alarm monitoring and seizes the phone line in the event of an emergency allowing the security system to take priority over any other phone calls.

    Supplies power to the security system

    Perimeter protection sensing when a door or window is opened or closed. Siren will sound when a door or window is opened when the security system is armed. Door and window sensors also allow for the chime mode to work creating a “chime” when doors and windows are opened or closed, this works when the system is disarmed.

    Back-up interior protection that senses movement and is most often used as a “trap zone”, detecting intruders heading to the master bedroom where homeowners keep most of their valuables. Typically installed in the hallway for a one story home and in the stairway for a 2 story home. The motion sensor is armed in AWAY MODE only. Most Motion Sensors installed in homes are pet-immune and allow cats and small dogs to roam freely throughout the home without setting off the alarm.

    Makes it very simple to arm and disarm the security system without the need of using the keypad and punching multiple buttons. The Key-chain Remote also has a police panic button allowing the homeowners to get police emergency help from 75-100ft of the main unit.

    Additional Home Security Equipment Products

    This is gives the homeowner monitored protection in the event of a house fire. ADT Central Station Operator will call the local fire department when the Monitored Smoke/Heat Detector senses smoke or fire. With this added feature most insurance companies will give an additional discount on homeowner’s insurance.

    This is a perimeter protection device that detects when a burglar breaks glass. It detects broken glass within direct line sight of the Glass Break Sensor from 20-25ft. The Glass Break Sensor is armed in STAY and AWAY MODE.

    3 Wireless Tilt Sensor

    Place this device on a TV, piece of art, etc. when the device is moved alarm will sound.

    Detects carbon monoxide poisoning, alerts homeowner and the security system will notify ADT Central Station of the dangerous level of poison in the home.

Many invertebrates like insects and shellfish have an open circulatory system, with the exact composition of the circulating fluid varying, depending on the animal species involved. In contrast, vertebrates have a closed circulatory system which circulates blood through a series of vessels in the body, with the interstitial fluid known as lymph moving slowly between the cells and through a series of lymph nodes .

    In the case of an animal with an open circulatory system, all of the organs and internal structures are constantly bathed in a mixture of the components of blood and lymph. This fluid brings nutrition and often oxygen to these structures, while carrying away waste for processing. Because the system is not closed, it is not possible to create blood pressure ; instead, the animal circulates this fluid with muscle contractions. In some animals, the fluid is not oxygenated; instead, tissues receive oxygen directly through the tracheal system.

    The fluid in an open circulatory system is sometimes referred to as hemolymph, referencing the fact that it is a cross between blood and lymph. It spends a brief amount of time in the heart, but instead of being pumped out of the heart and into a network of arteries and veins, it is dumped directly into the body cavity of the animal. If you have ever handled fresh shellfish, you have seen hemolymph; it is the pale pinkish to green fluid which squirts out when you cut the shellfish open.

    One advantage to an open circulatory system is that it renders the animal much less vulnerable to pressure. This can be an advantage for mollusks which live at great depths, because it prevents compression of their bodies. Because many insects use their tracheal systems to transport oxygen, they tend to have open circulatory systems because they place less demands on their bodies; efficiency is not as urgent when oxygen and carbon dioxide are handled through a separate system.

    The open circulatory system also gives animals greater control over their body temperature, which can be a distinct advantage at times. For example, it can help to quickly dissipate heat, allowing insects to survive in extremely hot environments. However, animals with a closed circulatory system have greater control over oxygen delivery to specific tissues, and they are also able to filter their blood and lymph more accurately because these systems are separated.

    Q) First of what exactly is an Allcritical Backup?

    A) An Allcritical backup is a backup of all the critical volumes present in the system.

    Q) What do you mean by critical volumes?

    A) Critical Volumes refer to the volumes present on the system which house the Operating System and other files which are essential for the OS to function properly. In the event of a disaster these volumes are required to bring your server back up and running.

    Q) If I take an Allcritical Backup, can I perform a System State Recovery and create a IFM dump of my AD server with it?

    A) Yes you can! There is no difference between a SSR or a IFM dump done from Allcritical or System State Backup. Allcritical Backup is basically a superset of a System State Backup.

    Q) Why Allcritical? If I have set up System State Backup of my server and my hard disk crashes, all I need to do now is reboot into my setup DVD and recover from the SSB, right?

    A) Wrong. System State Backup will NOT give you disaster recovery from setup media. Windows Server Backup offers full disaster recovery from setup media, wherein if the entire machine goes down. user can simply boot into setup media and restore the entire machine to an older time. For using this feature you need to have an Allcritical backup.

    Q) Fine, I don t need disaster recovery and SSB s are smaller than Allcritical Backups, so I guess I should go for SSB for my daily backup needs?

    A) Actually no, Allcritical Backups backup the entire Volume while a SSB only backs up the relevant system state files so a SINGLE SSB will certainly be smaller than the Allcritical backup. But if you are considering to set up a daily backup. then one more thing to consider is that SSB s are always full. All critical backups to volume and disks are stored in an incremental fashion. What this means is that if you take one backup that occupies x amount of space on the backup target then second backup will only take up space required for the changed blocks c . Total space utilized on target for storing both the backups will be x + c . in case of an SSB if first backup takes up y amount of space then total space taken up for 2 backups will be (y)+ (y+c).

    Q) How does this incremental storage work?

    A) After creating the first backup. WSB creates a VSS snapshot on the backup target, so when the second backup is written on top of the first backup, only the changed blocks takes extra space as diff area.     Q) I am seeing that Allcritical backups are pretty faster than SSB s why is that?

    A) This is because Allcritical backups back up volumes at Block level. so the backing up happens below the file system layer and hence are faster than SSB s which need to first identify all files to be backed up and then back them up individually one by one. This again is not true always. if for example you have a 150 GB hard disk with 10 GB system data another 130 GB of other data like photos. videos etc then the Allcritical backup will certainly take longer time for completion than SSB since the amount of data is much more.

    Q) Is there any other advantage that I can get by using Allcritical backups?

    A) Yes, as a matter of fact there is. If you select faster backup performance in the performance settings menu, then the speed of the backup can be increased. so that only the changed information is transferred from the source to the backup target. But do remember that the IO performance on the volumes being backed up can be impacted. This is because Window Server Backup leaves a copy-on-write shadow copy behind on these volumes once the first backup is taken so that it can track changes made to the file system.

    How does Firestone Complete Auto Care inspect my A/C system?

    We use a customized machine (RTI RHS980 ) that has been specifically designed to test and diagnose any and all automotive A/C problems. If we suspect a leak we’ll install a special UV Dye visible by black light or use “ sniffer ” to detect leaks. This device is run along the outside of your A/C system parts and can detect any refrigerant fumes and residue that have breached the A/C system.

    Do I need an appointment to have my A/C inspected?

    Stay cool. An appointment isn’t necessary to provide a comprehensive A/C Performance Check, but a service appointment can be made for your convenience.

    How long does an A/C Performance Check take?

    Well, you’ve guessed it, most A/C repairs occur during the hottest days of the year. Let’s just say, when it rains it pours car A/C repairs. And when the weather heats up is usually when most people realize their A/C isn’t working. The inspection and testing process alone can take at least 30 minutes—and that’s if there is no problem or it’s an easy problem to spot (are you feeling lucky?).

Without this equipment, a lot of hard to detect problems would either go unnoticed or take a lot longer to detect.

    How are Firestone technicians trained to service A/C systems?

    Not any technician off the street can service an A/C system. Really. it’s the law. Any person that wants to service an A/C system must first receive proper training and pass a certification test conducted by the Mobile Air Conditioning Society (MACS ).

    MACS was created in 1990 after the EPA required special certification for any technician servicing any A/C systems. The MACS certification test is designed to gauge the technician’s knowledge on properly recovering and recycling refrigerant. Refrigerant is a highly volatile and dangerous substance requiring certification by the EPA.

    Although the MACS test is not designed to evaluate the skills necessary to repair or service an A/C system, here at Firestone Complete Auto Care, we go a step further.

    DPW issues parking tickets to vehicles that violate the District s parking regulations. The most common types of violations are expired meter, parking longer than allowed in a Residential Permit Parking neighborhood, morning and afternoon rush hour, and expired tags.

    DPW does not ticket vehicles with a valid visitor s pass or ROSA exemption.

    A picture is worth a thousand words, so the Department of Public Works is posting images of parking tickets and the violations that led to tickets being issued by DPW. The images of certain parking violations are posted so motorists will better understand why tickets are issued.

    Adjudicate a Ticket

    The Department of Motor Vehicles is responsible for adjudicating parking tickets motorists believe were issued erroneously. To adjudicate a ticket, motorists should follow the directions on the back of the ticket.

    After finding the image of the parking violation, DC Department of Motor Vehicles allows you to pay tickets online.

    Avoid a Parking Ticket

    An Expired Meter

    At a meter, the instructions on the meter indicate how much time one can park. If the meter is broken, a motorist may park up to the time indicated on the meter. Before leaving the vehicle, call (202) 541-6030 or 311 to report the broken meter. Please keep the confirmation number. Park at a meter only for the time shown on the meter. No feeding the meter, please.

    Residential Permit Parking Violation

    In residential neighborhoods, check the signage to determine how long one can park in the zone. Remember, parking anywhere in the entire zone is prohibited once the time allowed has passed. Residents may obtain a visitor s pass for their visitors use when parking in an RPP zone; however, this pass is effective in preventing the motorist from receiving a ticket for an RPP violation, not a ROSA (Registration of Out-of-State Automobiles) violation.

    ROSA (Registration of Out-of-State Automobiles) Violation

    Like most states, the District requires motorists to register their vehicle(s) within 30 days of moving here and the Department of Public Works enforces this regulation. DPW s ROSA enforcement process has three phases:

    1. Observation: The first sighting of an out-of-state vehicle parked on public space and the vehicle s license plate number is entered into our system. Our ROSA crews work Sunday-Thursday, 10 pm-6 am. We do not enforce ROSA on Friday and Saturday nights because we anticipate an increased number of out-of-state family and friends visiting the District on weekends.
    2. Warning: This occurs 15 days after the vehicle was first observed. DPW will issue a warning notice to the vehicle. On the back of the notice is an explanation of why the warning was issued and instructions to be followed to receive an exemption if the motorist is not a District resident.
    3. Enforcement: This occurs 15 days after the vehicle was issued a warning notice. A ROSA ticket may be issued every time the vehicle is sighted if no exemption from this regulation has been acquired. Once a vehicle receives a one-year exemption from the Department of Motor Vehicles, the exemption and its expiration date are entered into our database.

    Note: A vehicle with a visitor s pass is not exempt from ROSA enforcement.

    What Is the Difference Between Criminal Justice and Criminology?

    Criminology is the study of crime and its causes, costs, and consequences. Criminal justice is the system in which crimes and criminals are detected, detained, tried and punished. People who study criminal justice actually learn about all the different components and inner workings of the system.

    What Are the Components of the Criminal Justice System?

    Three main components make up the criminal justice system: law enforcement, courts, and corrections. They work together to prevent and punish deviant behavior.

    • Law Enforcement: This function is perhaps the most visible. Police officers are typically the first contact a criminal has with the criminal justice system. Police patrol communities to help prevent crimes, to investigate incidences of crime, and to arrest people suspected of committing crimes. Criminals enter the courts system after they ve been arrested.
    • Courts System: The courts system consists of attorneys, judges, and juries, as well as ancillary staff. The guilt or innocence of a suspect is determined in court. The suspect, now a defendant, is offered the opportunity to defend himself in court as evidence is presented. He is then either released or is found to have committed the alleged crime. If he s found guilty, the suspect receives a sentence or punishment based on criteria set by the judge and by statute. The defendant is turned over to the corrections system after sentencing.
    • Corrections System: The corrections system incorporates all forms of sentencing and punishment. It includes incarceration and probation. A convicted criminal is the responsibility of the corrections system until his full sentence is served or commuted.

    The History of Crime and Punishment

    The criminal justice system has its roots in the Roman Republic and medieval England, which is one of the reasons why Latin remains the basis of the language of the courts. Concepts such as restitution and execution are carried over from ancient times, although other ancient punishments such as mutilation, flogging and branding have largely been done away with in industrialized countries as our sensibilities and understanding of crime have changed.

    Incarceration and the prison system only became widely used in the 1800s. When society deemed it necessary to separate a criminal from the population before that time, he was usually exiled and often threatened with death if he returned home.

    Another relatively new development in criminal justice is the modern police force. Once viewed as the duty and responsibility of every male citizen, maintaining safe and secure communities has now become a function of the government.

    More Than Just Joints: How Rheumatoid Arthritis Affects the Rest of Your Body

    You know that arthritis affects your joints. Painful, swollen knees or fingers are impossible to ignore. But did you know that other parts of your body your skin, eyes and lungs, to name a few may also be affected?

    Rheumatoid arthritis is a systemic disease, meaning it can affect many parts of the body. For that matter, so can some of the drugs used to treat RA. Following is a listing by body part of the ways RA (and sometimes the drugs used to treat it) can affect you.

    Many of these problems such as bone thinning or changes in kidney function cause no immediate symptoms so your doctor may monitor you through lab tests or checkups. For other problems such as skin rashes or dry mouth it s important to report any symptoms to your doctor, who can determine the cause or causes, and adjust your treatment plan accordingly.

    Skin

    Nodules. About half of people with RA develop rheumatoid nodules lumps of tissue that form under the skin, often over bony areas exposed to pressure, such as fingers or elbows. Unless the nodule is located in a sensitive spot, such as where you hold a pen, treatment may not be necessary. Nodules sometimes disappear on their own or with treatment with disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs ).

    Rashes. When RA-related inflammation of the blood vessels (called vasculitis ) affects the skin, a rash of small red dots is the result. In more severe cases, vasculitis can cause skin ulcers on the legs or under the nails. Controlling the rash or ulcers requires controlling the underlying inflammation.

    Drug effects. Corticosteroids. prescribed to reduce inflammation, can cause thinning of the skin and susceptibility to bruising. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs ), which treat pain and inflammation, and methotrexate, a widely prescribed DMARD, can cause sun sensitivity. People taking biologics, a sub-category of DMARDs designed to stop inflammation at the cellular level, may develop a rash at the injection site.

    Bones

    Thinning. Chronic inflammation from RA leads to loss of bone density, not only around the joints, but throughout the body, leading to thin, brittle bones. Exercise, a high-calcium diet and vitamin D can all help bones, but in some cases your doctor may need to prescribe a drug to stimulate bone growth or prevent bone loss.

    Drug effects. Corticosteroids can also cause bone thinning.

    Eyes

    Inflammation and scarring. Some people with RA develop inflammation of the whites of the eyes (scleritis) that can lead to scarring. Symptoms include pain, redness, blurred vision and light sensitivity. Scleritis is usually treatable with medications prescribed by your doctor, but in rare cases, the eye may be permanently damaged. RA can also cause uveitis, an inflammation of the area between the retina and the white of the eye, which, if not treated, could cause blindness.

    Dryness. The inflammatory process that affects the joints can also damage the tear-producing glands, a condition known as Sj gren s syndrome. The result is eyes that feel dry and gritty. Artificial tears, which are available over the counter, as well as medications your doctor prescribes, can keep eyes more comfortable and help prevent damage related to dryness.

    Drug effects. Corticosteroids may cause glaucoma and cataracts. Hydroxychloroquine, in rare cases, causes pigment changes in the retina that can lead to vision loss. As a rule, people with RA should get eye checkups at least once a year.

    Mouth

    Dryness. Inflammation can damage the moisture-producing glands of the mouth as well as the eyes, resulting in a dry mouth. Over-the-counter artificial saliva products and self-treatment often helps. If not, your doctor may prescribe a medication to increase the production of saliva. Good dental hygiene is a must, as bacteria tend to flourish in a dry mouth, leading to tooth decay and gum disease.

    Drug effects. Methotrexate can cause mouth sores or oral ulcers. For treatment, try a topical pain reliever or ask your doctor or dentist for a prescription mouthwash.

    Lungs

    Inflammation and scarring. Up to 80 percent of people with RA have some degree of lung involvement, which is usually not severe enough to cause symptoms. However, severe, prolonged inflammation of the lung tissue can lead to a form of lung disease called pulmonary fibrosis that interferes with breathing and can be difficult to treat.

    Nodules. Rheumatoid nodules might form in the lungs, but are usually harmless.

    Drug effects. Methotrexate can cause a complication known as methotrexate lung or methotrexate pneumonia, which generally goes away when the methotrexate is stopped. Less common drugs, including injectable gold and penicillamine, can cause similar pneumonias. The condition goes away when treatment ceases; patients can usually resume the drug in a few weeks.

    By suppressing your immune system, corticosteroids, DMARDs and biologics may increase your risk of tuberculosis (TB), a bacterial infection of the lungs. Your doctor should test for TB before initiating treatment and periodically after.

    Heart and Blood Vessels

    Atherosclerosis. Chronic inflammation can damage endothelial cells that line the blood vessels, causing the vessels to absorb more cholesterol and form plaques.

    Heart attack and stroke. When plaques from damaged blood vessels break lose they can block a vessel, leading to heart attack or stroke. In fact, a 2010 Swedish study found that the risk of heart attack for people with RA was 60 percent higher just one year after being diagnosed with RA.

    Pericarditis. Inflammation of the heart lining, the pericardium, may manifest as chest pain. Treatment to control arthritis often controls pericarditis as well.

    Drug effects. While many RA medications, including methotrexate, other DMARDS and biologics may reduce cardiovascular risk in people with RA, other medications chiefly NSAIDs may increase the risk of cardiovascular events including heart attack. Your doctor will need to evaluate your risk when prescribing treatment for your RA.

    Liver

    Drug effects. Although RA doesn t directly harm the liver, some medications taken for RA can. For example, long-term use of the pain reliever acetaminophen (Tylenol ) is considered a leading cause of liver failure. Liver diseases may also occur with long-term methotrexate use. Working with your rheumatologist to monitor your blood is key to preventing problems.

    Kidneys

    Drug effects. As with the liver, drugs taken for arthritis can lead to kidney problems. The most common offenders include cyclosporine, methotrexate and NSAIDs. If you are taking these drugs long term, you doctor will monitor your kidney function to watch for problems.

    Blood

    Anemia. Unchecked inflammation can lead to a reduction in red blood cells characterized by headache and fatigue. Treatment consists of drugs to control inflammation along with iron supplements.

    Blood clots. Inflammation might lead to elevated blood platelet levels, and blood clots.

    Felty syndrome. Though rare, people with longstanding RA can develop Felty syndrome, characterized by an enlarged spleen and low white blood cell count. This condition may lead to increased risk of infection and lymphoma (cancer of the lymph glands). Immunosuppressant drugs are the usual treatment.

    Drug effects. Aggressively treating inflammation with corticosteroids may cause thrombocytopenia, an abnormally low number of blood platelets.

    Nervous System

    Pinched or compressed nerves. Although RA does not directly affect the nerves, inflammation of tissues may cause compression of the nerves resulting in numbness or tingling. One relatively common problem is carpal tunnel syndrome, a condition in which the nerve that runs from the forearm to the hand is compressed by inflamed tissue in the wrist area, resulting in tingling, numbness and decreased grip strength.

Only issue was connection to monitoring station as I live in a remote area. Called the customer service number and got a response very quick. Within 10 minutes we had determined it was a weak signal problem and they sent a Verizon module overnight. (Most systems come with a t-mobile module). Everything is working great. The interactive website and mobile app works great and is easy to use. I also like you can easily assign codes to fiends and family at a click of a button. The monitoring rates are very reasonable compared to most companies. No contracts! The Best Buy bundles were a good fit for me because it didn’t need all the bells and whistles that came with the direct from simplisafe website. Overall really happy with the purchase.

I also like that it has an app to monitor and control the system when away from home. I, personally, have not had any connection or installation issues. The reason I did not give it 5 stars, is I believe the system could use some updating, i.e. touchscreen display, this is something I would even be willing to pay a little extra for when purchasing or adding on equipment. But, the design is understandable, as this is the more ‘economical’ choice for home security.

The alarm siren that comes built into the base is not very loud, if you are interested in a loud siren I would recommend purchasing the additional one that is available.

    An active solar energy system is a solar water or space-heating system that uses pumps or fans to circulate the fluid from the solar collectors to a storage tank subsystem. There are two basic types of active solar heating systems based on the type of fluid either liquid or air that is heated in the solar energy collectors. Liquid-based systems heat water or an antifreeze solution in a “hydronic” collector, whereas air-based systems heat air in an air collector.

    Both of these systems collect and absorb solar radiation. then transfer the solar heat directly to the interior space or to a storage system, from which the heat is distributed. If the system cannot provide adequate space heating, an auxiliary or back-up system provides the additional heat. Liquid systems are more often used when storage is included, and are well suited for radiant heating systems. boilers with hot water radiators, and even absorption heat pumps and coolers.     Economics and other benefits of active solar heating systems

    Active solar heating systems are most cost-effective when they are used for most of the year, that is, in cold climates with good solar resources. They are most economical if they are displacing more expensive heating fuels, such as electricity, propane, and oil heat. Some states offer sales tax exemptions, income tax credits or deductions, and property tax exemptions or deductions for solar energy systems so that is good information to have handy when you are filing your taxes for the year. It could essentially reimburse you for quite a bit of the cost of the system.

    The cost of an active solar heating system will vary. Commercial systems range from $30 to $80 per square foot of collector area, installed. Usually, the larger the system, the less it costs per unit of collector area. Commercially available collectors come with warranties of 10 years or more, and should easily last decades longer. The economics of an active space heating system improve if it also heats domestic water, because an otherwise idle collector can heat water in the summer.

    Heating your home with an active solar energy system can significantly reduce your fuel bills in the winter. A solar heating system will also reduce the amount of air pollution and greenhouse gases that result from your use of fossil fuels such as oil, propane, and natural gas for heating or that may be used to generate the electricity that you use.

    Selecting and sizing a solar heating system

    Selecting the appropriate solar energy system depends on factors such as the site, design, and heating needs of your house. Local covenants may restrict your options; for example homeowner associations may not allow you to install solar collectors on certain parts of your house (although many homeowners have been successful in challenging such covenants).

    The local climate, the type and efficiency of the collector(s), and the collector area determine how much heat a solar heating system can provide. It is usually most economical to design an active system to provide 40%�80% of the home’s heating needs. Systems providing less than 40% of the heat needed for a home are rarely cost-effective except when using solar air heater collectors that heat one or two rooms and require no heat storage. A well-designed and insulated home that incorporates passive solar heating techniques will require a smaller and less costly heating system of any type, and may need very little supplemental heat other than solar.

    Besides the fact that designing an active system to supply enough heat 100% of the time is generally not practical or cost effective, most building codes and mortgage lenders require a back-up heating system. Supplementary or back-up systems supply heat when the solar system can not meet heating requirements. They can range from a wood stove to a conventional central heating system.

    Controls for solar heating systems

    Controls for solar heating systems are usually more complex than those of a conventional heating system, because they have to analyze more signals and control more devices (including the conventional, backup heating system). Solar controls use sensors, switches, and/or motors to operate the system. The system uses other controls to prevent freezing or extremely high temperatures in the collectors.

    The heart of the control system is a differential thermostat, which measures the difference in temperature between the collectors and storage unit. When the collectors are 10��20�F (5.6��11�C) warmer than the storage unit, the thermostat turns on a pump or fan to circulate water or air through the collector to heat the storage medium or the house.

    The operation, performance, and cost of these controls vary. Some control systems monitor the temperature in different parts of the system to help determine how it is operating. The most sophisticated systems use microprocessors to control and optimize heat transfer and delivery to storage and zones of the house.

    It is possible to use a solar panel to power low voltage, direct current (DC) blowers (for air collectors) or pumps (for liquid collectors). The output of the solar panels matches available solar heat gain to the solar collector. With careful sizing, the blower or pump speed is optimized for efficient solar gain to the working fluid. During low sun conditions the blower or pump speed is slow, and during high solar gain, they run faster.

    When used with a room air collector, separate controls may not be necessary. This also ensures that the system will operate in the event of utility power outage. A solar power system with battery storage can also provide power to operate a central heating system, though this is expensive for large systems.

    Building codes, covenants, and regulations for solar heating systems

    Before installing a solar energy system, you should investigate local building codes, zoning ordinances, and subdivision covenants, as well as any special regulations pertaining to the site. You will probably need a building permit to install a solar energy system onto an existing building.

    Not every community or municipality initially welcomes residential renewable energy installations. Although this is often due to ignorance or the comparative novelty of renewable energy systems, you must comply with existing building and permit procedures to install your system.

    The matter of building code and zoning compliance for a solar system installation is typically a local issue. Even if a statewide building code is in effect, it’s usually enforced locally by your city, county, or parish. Common problems homeowners have encountered with building codes include the following:

    • Exceeding roof load
    • Unacceptable heat exchangers
    • Improper wiring
    • Unlawful tampering with potable water supplies

    Potential zoning issues include these:

    • Obstructing sideyards
    • Erecting unlawful protrusions on roofs
    • Siting the system too close to streets or lot boundaries

    Special area regulations such as local community, subdivision, or homeowner’s association covenants also demand compliance. These covenants, historic district regulations, and flood-plain provisions can easily be overlooked. To find out what’s needed for local compliance, contact your local jurisdiction’s zoning and building enforcement divisions and any appropriate homeowner’s, subdivision, neighborhood, and/or community association(s).

    Installing and maintaining your solar heating system

    How well an active solar energy system performs depends on effective siting, system design, and installation, and the quality and durability of the components. The collectors and controls now manufactured are of high quality. The biggest factor now is finding an experienced contractor who can properly design and install the system.
