What is a PABX or PBX?

What is a pabx pbx you ask? A private branch exchange (‘PBX’, ‘Private Business eXchange’ or ‘PABX ‘ for ‘Private Automatic Branch eXchange’) is a telephone system owned by a business, as opposed to one owned by a common carrier or by a telephone company.

In the early days a company with a manual telephone switchboard or switchboard was operated by a person plugging cables into sockets. This was known as a private Manual Branch Exchange or PMBX). These were replaced by electromechanical and finally PABX electronic switching systems also called Private Automatic Branch exchange. PMBX are rare these days, and the term PABX and PBX are widely used. The term PBX is still more widely used. PBX systems select their own lines randomly to make outgoing calls. These lines are referred to as trunk lines.

A PABX connects all the business’s instruments separately to the public telephone network PSTN or ISDN. A PBX switchboard assists in that every internal call made is routed through the PABX (central switch).

Telephone sets, faxes,modems and other communication devices can also be connected to a PBX. All these devices are normally connected to extensions.

The PBX switchboard is installed at a business’s premises and connects incoming calls between the extension telephones installed (see Siemens HiPath 1120 PABX ). The outside lines (trunk lines) are available for making and receiving calls external to the site (PSTN). Companies with more than one site can connect their PBXs together with trunk lines. PBX-like services can also be provided by equipment located off site at a central provider, delivering services over the public telephone network. This is known as a Private branch exchange Hosted PBX. Most local phone companies offer a Centrex which is a public telephone network offering all the features of a basic PBX but off site at a central provider.

VoIP (Voice over IP) known also as an IPBX (see Siemens HiPath 2030 IP PBX ). is one of the latest trends in PBX switchboard development which uses the Internet Protocol to carry calls. Most newer switchboards PaBXs support VoIP.

In the 1990s ISDN PBX systems replaced some traditional switchboards. ISDN offers various other features like conference calling, call forwarding and programmable caller ID.

The cost of switchboard PABX ownership is reducing sharply as recent open source projects (such as Asterisk PBX) is launched.

The switchboard PBX has three main functions:

* Establishing a party to party connection between the telephone users. (ie.directing a dialed number to a telephone, ensuring the telephone is not busy)
* Keeping the channel open for as long as users require
* Metering the call for billing purposes

Over and above these basic functions, switchboards offer many other features, each manufacturer trying to add extra features to differentiate their products from another.

Common capabilities include (manufacturers may have a different name for each capability):

* DDI or DID Direct Inward Dialing
* Auto Attendant
* Call transfer
* Speed Dialing
* Voice mail
* Follow-me
* Call forwarding
* Music on hold
* Automatic ring back
* Night service
* ACD – Automatic call distributor
* Call waiting
* Call pick-up
* Call park
* Conference call
*Telephone Management
* On Hold greetings
* Voicemail
* Directory services (an address book with contacts name and number)

* POTS stands for Plain Old Telephone System – a two-wire interface used in most homes. Effective and cheap allowing the use of most standard phones be used as an extension.

* proprietary – protocol defined by a specific manufacturer. Can only use the manufacturers designed equipment to connect onto their PBX

*Internet Protocol – SIP

Interfaces for connecting PBXs to each other include:

* QSIG – a PABX standard for connecting PBXs to each other

* Integrated Services Digital Network ISDN – Two types are offered. Basic (2 circuit capacity) or Primary (24 or 30 circuits)

* File – A folder containing the call records from the PABX.

These call records from the PBX are called SMDR. The records are sent to a call management system such as the MAN3000 (if installed) and are converted into a table giving valuable call information such as date and time the call was made, by which user, duration and cost. This can then be used to save money on wasted unnecessary calls or to bill third parties.

However, they are slower to detect motion and start recording than I like and I have fast Internet. The video looks good. The IR light for night time recording is not invisible, they have a slight red glow. They have now added IFTTT support and geo-fencing is in beta.

Trials have also shown that eating chillies can help to increase antibodies, which inevitably means fewer infections.

Both red and green chillies are high in vitamin C. Raw, green, hot chillies have the highest amount containing more per gram than oranges. Vitamin C contains bioflavonoids, which the body needs to produce the white blood cells that help your body stop germs in their tracks.

3. Garlic

You can boost your immune system with garlic, an immunity rock star. It effects are so powerful that it was even used to treat gangrene during both world wars. It contains up to 100 biologically active compounds which give the plant it’s amazing, immunity stimulating effects. There is some evidence to suggest that those who are brave enough to consume large amounts of garlic at the onset of a cold are likely to significantly speed up their recovery time.

Unfortunately if you want to get the full benefit from this wonderful plant it’s best to eat it raw. This is because cooking can destroy some of the volatile oils that give garlic its antibiotic properties.

If you don’t want to be a social outcast and can’t bear the thought of eating raw garlic at any cost, then odourless garlic capsules are a relatively inexpensive, although somewhat less effective alternative.

4. Oregano

Oregano contains thymol and rosmarinic acid which are powerful antioxidants. In tests thymol has been shown to inhibit Staphylococcus aureus. a nasty bacteria commonly found in the respiratory tract. “Cloud” Computing and Thin Client Solutions

As we find ourselves in an increasingly fast-paced and mobile world, our dependency on technology to provide real-time access to information increases as well. One of the most utilitarian advancements of technology towards this end has been the advent of thin client or ‘Cloud’ based computing systems.

In a nutshell: A thin client solution allows a computing device (PC, IPad, IPhone, Android device – aka the ‘client’) to ‘dial in’ to the desktop of another computer (aka the ‘server’). The user can then pass keystrokes and mouse clicks to the desktop of that computer, and receive screen shots of what the resulting screen looks like on the other computer (server) to their local computing device (client). It is called ‘thin’ client because you wind up passing very little data over the internet, just screen shots, mouse clicks and keyboard clicks.

The term ‘Cloud Computing’ appeared around 2006, and encapsulates the notion of thin client computing with the ability to securely store your data ‘somewhere else’. There are a variety of solutions available to your agency that provide thin client access to your local software, and provide automated methods to back up your local data to a secure, offsite location.

Remote Desktop (aka Terminal Services) is probably the best solution thin client solution for multiple remote users to access your local data for long periods of time. It is also the most expensive requiring the services of a local hardware technician, a Server operating system (Windows Server 2003, 2008, etc. which can cost $800 or more), and Remote Desktop licenses – which run about $80-$100 apiece (although you typically get one license for free). The advantages of using Remote Desktop to dial into a Server based operating system are that it is more secure, less prone to data corruption, and does not require a separate computer for each person logging in.

There are less expensive (even free) solutions for people that need to occasionally dial in to the home office, or dial in one at a time. These solutions all require that there is a separate computer at the home office, for each person dialing in. Some of these solutions can be found at: and Each product has advantages and disadvantages regarding ease of use, reliability, supported client devices, and features; and there are several factors such as how printing and file transfers are handled between the ‘Free’ and ‘Pro’ versions of each software that must be taken into account. If you are considering one of these less expensive thin client solutions, it might be money well spent to hire a tech for an hour or so to help you sort out your options.

Another aspect to Cloud Based computing is the ability to securely backup your data by copying your files over the internet to a secure facility offsite, thus limiting your liability if your local location burns down, or is involved in a natural disaster. Some companies that offer offsite backup solutions for a small fee are and With a little help from a local tech – you can quickly set one of these programs up, and then have peace of mind that your data is stored securely ‘somewhere else’. Just make sure that your tech sets the program up to send the files over the internet at night, otherwise you will see your daytime internet speeds drop dramatically.

    There are two types of security systems installed. Most home security systems installed today are wireless security systems and a much smaller percent of installations are hard wired systems typically installed in homes that have been pre-wired for a security system. Most hard wired security systems are “hybrid” which means they can communicate with wireless security devices as well.

    A “wireless security system” is one that communicates to wireless security devices. A “cellular security system ” is one that sends emergency alarm signals and communicates to the ADT Central Station via a GSM Cellular unit that is part of the security system. A “wireless security system” can not have hard wired security devices connected to it, but a “hard wired security system” can operate both hard wired and wireless security devices. Both “wireless security systems” and “hard wired security systems” can be used for standard land line phone communication or cellular communication.

    For homeowners who have existing security systems, it is important to note that existing wireless security equipment will only be able to communicate to control panels of the same manufacture type. Most security systems are manufactured by DSC, Honeywell/Ademco and GE. Many security systems are branded by monitoring companies like ADT but 90% of these branded systems were manufactured by Honeywell/Ademco, GE and DSC.     An open circulatory system is a type of circulatory system in which nutrients and waste are moved through the body with the assistance of a fluid which flows freely through the body cavity, rather than being contained in veins. Many invertebrates like insects and shellfish have an open circulatory system, with the exact composition of the circulating fluid varying, depending on the animal species involved. In contrast, vertebrates have a closed circulatory system which circulates blood through a series of vessels in the body, with the interstitial fluid known as lymph moving slowly between the cells and through a series of lymph nodes .

    In the case of an animal with an open circulatory system, all of the organs and internal structures are constantly bathed in a mixture of the components of blood and lymph. This fluid brings nutrition and often oxygen to these structures, while carrying away waste for processing. Because the system is not closed, it is not possible to create blood pressure ; instead, the animal circulates this fluid with muscle contractions. In some animals, the fluid is not oxygenated; instead, tissues receive oxygen directly through the tracheal system.

    The fluid in an open circulatory system is sometimes referred to as hemolymph, referencing the fact that it is a cross between blood and lymph. It spends a brief amount of time in the heart, but instead of being pumped out of the heart and into a network of arteries and veins, it is dumped directly into the body cavity of the animal. If you have ever handled fresh shellfish, you have seen hemolymph; it is the pale pinkish to green fluid which squirts out when you cut the shellfish open.

    One advantage to an open circulatory system is that it renders the animal much less vulnerable to pressure.     Q) First of what exactly is an Allcritical Backup?

    A) An Allcritical backup is a backup of all the critical volumes present in the system.

    Q) What do you mean by critical volumes?

    A) Critical Volumes refer to the volumes present on the system which house the Operating System and other files which are essential for the OS to function properly. In the event of a disaster these volumes are required to bring your server back up and running.

    Q) If I take an Allcritical Backup, can I perform a System State Recovery and create a IFM dump of my AD server with it?

    A) Yes you can! There is no difference between a SSR or a IFM dump done from Allcritical or System State Backup. Allcritical Backup is basically a superset of a System State Backup.

    Q) Why Allcritical? If I have set up System State Backup of my server and my hard disk crashes, all I need to do now is reboot into my setup DVD and recover from the SSB, right?

    A) Wrong. System State Backup will NOT give you disaster recovery from setup media. Windows Server Backup offers full disaster recovery from setup media, wherein if the entire machine goes down. user can simply boot into setup media and restore the entire machine to an older time. For using this feature you need to have an Allcritical backup.

    Q) Fine, I don t need disaster recovery and SSB s are smaller than Allcritical Backups, so I guess I should go for SSB for my daily backup needs?

    A) Actually no, Allcritical Backups backup the entire Volume while a SSB only backs up the relevant system state files so a SINGLE SSB will certainly be smaller than the Allcritical backup. But if you are considering to set up a daily backup. then one more thing to consider is that SSB s are always full. All critical backups to volume and disks are stored in an incremental fashion. What this means is that if you take one backup that occupies x amount of space on the backup target then second backup will only take up space required for the changed blocks c . Total space utilized on target for storing both the backups will be x + c . in case of an SSB if first backup takes up y amount of space then total space taken up for 2 backups will be (y)+ (y+c).

    Q) How does this incremental storage work?

    A) After creating the first backup. WSB creates a VSS snapshot on the backup target, so when the second backup is written on top of the first backup, only the changed blocks takes extra space as diff area. Thus making it space usage efficient. For more details on VSS, refer

    Q) I am seeing that Allcritical backups are pretty faster than SSB s why is that?

    A) This is because Allcritical backups back up volumes at Block level. so the backing up happens below the file system layer and hence are faster than SSB s which need to first identify all files to be backed up and then back them up individually one by one. This again is not true always. if for example you have a 150 GB hard disk with 10 GB system data another 130 GB of other data like photos. videos etc then the Allcritical backup will certainly take longer time for completion than SSB since the amount of data is much more.

    Q) Is there any other advantage that I can get by using Allcritical backups?

    A) Yes, as a matter of fact there is. If you select faster backup performance in the performance settings menu, then the speed of the backup can be increased. so that only the changed information is transferred from the source to the backup target. But do remember that the IO performance on the volumes being backed up can be impacted. This is because Window Server Backup leaves a copy-on-write shadow copy behind on these volumes once the first backup is taken so that it can track changes made to the file system.

    Family Protection and Domestic Violence Intervention Act

    In accordance with the Family Protection and Domestic violence intervention Act of 1994, an automated statewide registry will be operative effective October 1, 1995. The legislation requires that the registry contain information involving orders of protection and warrants issued statewide in connection with criminal, Family Court and matrimonial cases involving family violence. Effective October 1, 1995, all requests for an order of protection must be submitted with a completed Family Protection Registry information sheet. These forms are available in the matrimonial office, Room 140 in Jamaica.

    How does Firestone Complete Auto Care inspect my A/C system?

    We use a customized machine (RTI RHS980 ) that has been specifically designed to test and diagnose any and all automotive A/C problems. If we suspect a leak we’ll install a special UV Dye visible by black light or use “ sniffer ” to detect leaks. This device is run along the outside of your A/C system parts and can detect any refrigerant fumes and residue that have breached the A/C system.

    Do I need an appointment to have my A/C inspected?

    Stay cool. An appointment isn’t necessary to provide a comprehensive A/C Performance Check, but a service appointment can be made for your convenience.

    How long does an A/C Performance Check take?

    Well, you’ve guessed it, most A/C repairs occur during the hottest days of the year. Let’s just say, when it rains it pours car A/C repairs. And when the weather heats up is usually when most people realize their A/C isn’t working. The inspection and testing process alone can take at least 30 minutes—and that’s if there is no problem or it’s an easy problem to spot (are you feeling lucky?).

    In many cases, should any work be required on your A/C system, you’ll have the convenience of having the recommended services performed that same day. So don’t sweat it. No additional appointments are necessary. We’ve all got busy lives.     What special equipment do you use when servicing my A/C system?

    The RTI RHS980 is the brains behind the complicated equations and chemical analysis performed during an A/C system test. This machine is standard in all our Firestone locations and is the most trusted and accurate way to detect any potential A/C system problems. Without this equipment, a lot of hard to detect problems would either go unnoticed or take a lot longer to detect.

    How are Firestone technicians trained to service A/C systems?

    Not any technician off the street can service an A/C system. Really. it’s the law. Any person that wants to service an A/C system must first receive proper training and pass a certification test conducted by the Mobile Air Conditioning Society (MACS ).

    MACS was created in 1990 after the EPA required special certification for any technician servicing any A/C systems. The MACS certification test is designed to gauge the technician’s knowledge on properly recovering and recycling refrigerant. Refrigerant is a highly volatile and dangerous substance requiring certification by the EPA.

    Although the MACS test is not designed to evaluate the skills necessary to repair or service an A/C system, here at Firestone Complete Auto Care, we go a step further.

    With our own onsite training, our technicians receive the complete training regimen necessary to understand and successfully recharge and repair any car, truck or SUV A/C system part.

    DPW issues parking tickets to vehicles that violate the District s parking regulations. The most common types of violations are expired meter, parking longer than allowed in a Residential Permit Parking neighborhood, morning and afternoon rush hour, and expired tags.

    DPW does not ticket vehicles with a valid visitor s pass or ROSA exemption.

    A picture is worth a thousand words, so the Department of Public Works is posting images of parking tickets and the violations that led to tickets being issued by DPW. The images of certain parking violations are posted so motorists will better understand why tickets are issued.

    Adjudicate a Ticket

    The Department of Motor Vehicles is responsible for adjudicating parking tickets motorists believe were issued erroneously. To adjudicate a ticket, motorists should follow the directions on the back of the ticket.

    After finding the image of the parking violation, DC Department of Motor Vehicles allows you to pay tickets online.

    Avoid a Parking Ticket

    An Expired Meter

    At a meter, the instructions on the meter indicate how much time one can park. If the meter is broken, a motorist may park up to the time indicated on the meter. Before leaving the vehicle, call (202) 541-6030 or 311 to report the broken meter. Please keep the confirmation number. Park at a meter only for the time shown on the meter. No feeding the meter, please.

    Residential Permit Parking Violation

    In residential neighborhoods, check the signage to determine how long one can park in the zone. Remember, parking anywhere in the entire zone is prohibited once the time allowed has passed. Residents may obtain a visitor s pass for their visitors use when parking in an RPP zone; however, this pass is effective in preventing the motorist from receiving a ticket for an RPP violation, not a ROSA (Registration of Out-of-State Automobiles) violation.

    ROSA (Registration of Out-of-State Automobiles) Violation

    Like most states, the District requires motorists to register their vehicle(s) within 30 days of moving here and the Department of Public Works enforces this regulation. DPW s ROSA enforcement process has three phases:

    1. Observation: The first sighting of an out-of-state vehicle parked on public space and the vehicle s license plate number is entered into our system. Our ROSA crews work Sunday-Thursday, 10 pm-6 am. We do not enforce ROSA on Friday and Saturday nights because we anticipate an increased number of out-of-state family and friends visiting the District on weekends.
    2. Warning: This occurs 15 days after the vehicle was first observed. DPW will issue a warning notice to the vehicle. On the back of the notice is an explanation of why the warning was issued and instructions to be followed to receive an exemption if the motorist is not a District resident.
    3. Enforcement: This occurs 15 days after the vehicle was issued a warning notice. A ROSA ticket may be issued every time the vehicle is sighted if no exemption from this regulation has been acquired. Once a vehicle receives a one-year exemption from the Department of Motor Vehicles, the exemption and its expiration date are entered into our database.

    Note: A vehicle with a visitor s pass is not exempt from ROSA enforcement.

According to the most recent economic impact study, the three airports collectively contributed more than $27.5 billion to the local economy and were directly responsible for more than 230,000 jobs that generated $8.7 billion in employment earnings.
