They will also have premium numbers but that’s OK. When I worked full time with a big psychic company I had 90% of my clients coming through a free to call customer service operator but many regulars sometime prefered to call on my premium line extension if they just want a quick psychic question answered and they didn’t need the full ten or twenty minutes, the norm on a credit card line.

    The dodgy psychic hotlines ONLY have premium numbers. They are very difficult to contact and if you take on their telephone psychic jobs you will find they will push you to stretch the calls past certain minimums or they withhold paying you. Don’t waste your time. If you are a good psychic, stick with good psychic companies. Call the customer service number and ask for an application to become one of their readers. They may put you on a waiting list if they have a full quota of readers. But that’s OK; apply to a few more telephone psychic jobs until you click in with the right one. You will be tested and appraised then taken on if all is well. You will in most cases be self employed and that means you handle your own taxes.

    You will also be contracted to work with only the one company. That’s good ethical practice. Although I will show you how to set up a second and independent line to your psychic business, under no circumstances EVER bring a client of one company over to another or to yourself. It’s not ethical and most likely not allowed if you read the small print of the contract you will sign.

    Once you have yourself established with a good company, you may want to set up a client base of your own too. Maybe you are already set up and you want that extra income stream now. Read on.

    Calling all mobile users. text 85095 to reduce nuisance calls

    Mobile phone users can send a simple text message to opt out of unsolicited sales and marketing calls. The ‘text-to-register’ service enables mobile phone users to add their number to the UK’s official ‘do not call’ database by texting ‘TPS’ and their email address to 85095.

    It is illegal for organisations to make unsolicited sales and marketing calls to numbers registered with the TPS, unless they have a person’s consent to do so.

    Raising awareness of the TPS

    According to Ofcom research, only half (48%) of people familiar with the TPS are aware that mobile numbers can be registered, compared to almost nine in 10 (88%) for landline phone numbers.

    This helps explain why only 2.9 million mobile numbers (around 3%) are registered on the TPS database, compared with 18.5 million landline numbers (around 85%).

    By introducing the quick and easy text-to-register process, the TPS and Ofcom aim to raise awareness of the preference service among mobile users and drive registrations.

    How ‘text-to-register’ works

    To register, mobile customers simply text ‘TPS’, followed by their email address to the shortcode 85095. They will receive a text reply from the TPS confirming their number has been successfully added to its database.

    Registrants should notice a gradual reduction in unsolicited sales and marketing voice calls after a few days, although it can take up to 28 days for the service to become fully effective.

    A study commissioned by Ofcom and the Information Commissioner’s Office found people registered with the TPS saw a reduction in the monthly volume of live sales or marketing calls received of around a third (31%). Registering with the TPS, however, does not prevent spam text messages.

    When you register your mobile on the Telephone Preference Service, there is no charge for sending a text to the shortcode 85095 or for receiving the confirmation text.

    There is an alternative shortcode, 78070, but for this you will be charged at your standard network rate.

    No legal services program can survive without vendors. We have become fairly savvy about using them for items such as office supplies, office equipment and books. We are in more dangerous territory when purchasing items with which we have less comfort and familiarity. While we at Northwest Justice Project are not in a position to write the authoritative legal services article on the use of vendors, we can share our recent experience purchasing sophisticated software for our telephone system, with the hope that other programs may learn from our experience.

    Our telephone purchasing experience began in 1997 when we shopped for a more robust telephone system to support our statewide telephonic intake, advice brief service delivery system. We had been working with our existing system for a year and a half and had identified features that we wanted in the new system. We also knew there were features we had not even dreamed of that might be useful to us. We contacted several companies and invited them to tell us how their product might meet our needs. After ruling out some of the companies because of cost or because the product did not meet our needs, we focused on two major vendors – NEC and Lucent. We met repeatedly with sales reps from these companies to gain a very clear understanding of what the systems included. References were obtained and checked. After we had worked out detailed bids with both companies we called in a telephone consultant with whom we had worked previously and had him review the bids to help us understand the differences between them. We preferred the Lucent system, however, it was quite a bit more expensive than the NEC system. We asked Lucent for a donation and instead they offered a significant discount that made the two systems competitive in cost. Ultimately we chose the Lucent system and we have been very pleased with its performance.

    As we continued to work with this new system, we identified additional features that would support our work and obtained a TIG grant to purchase two additional software packages. One allows remote access to the system (hoping to make volunteering more appealing to the private bar) and the other (an interactive voice response unit) allows the use of voice commands and 24-hour access to recorded legal information and publication requests. What follows is a list of questions we asked at some time during the purchasing process. Many of these questions should be equally useful in other situations.
