Not exactly a mileage run question, but I think this is the most appropriate place.

Is there a website I can use to find the least expensive flights from a departure city on a specific date? For example, if I want to see all the cheap flights departing from Boston next Friday so I can determine if any of them are warm and worth going to, is there a tool I can use?

I was using FareCompare like a different thread suggests, but I cannot figure out to use specific dates.

I also tried using Expedia s dream tracker, but all the pop ups on the map are a big pain in the butt.

I ve been hesitant to post this on Flyer Talk because I m sure it s answered someplace and I did not want snarky use the search responses. However, their forum search is not a great tool when they are so many posts.

EDIT TO SHARE SOME RESPONSES:

Here are some of the recommendations:

Great for constructing a mileage run, but not (yet) friendly for just finding cheap flights for a quick getaway:

The best flight search tool you’ve never heard of

It should come as no surprise that I’m a bit of an obsessive when it comes to searching for flights online. This is my job, after all, and I pursue flight search with the same fervor that I seek out a sweet sample sale deal.

My secret tool, however, is now out for public consumption, and I guess I consider it my responsibility to share it with the world.

Meet ITASoftware.com. If you can remember the clunky URL, you will be happy. ITA Software, which was recently acquired by Google for a cool $700 million in cash, is a travel data clearinghouse that supplies everyone from Bing to Orbitz to Kayak with all of their flight info. That’s right. Most search engines pull the same information; they just slice it and deliver it in different ways.

ITA Software isn’t new; it was founded in 1996 by MIT computer scientists. But the owners have given it a face lift that makes it more palatable for public consumption. While it used to look like it was built, in fact, in 1996, the site has been upgraded and streamlined, with one of those handy matrices that lays out all the options. They’ve even created something I’ve never seen before: a sideways chart detailing flight options by time, using color-coded time bars. Their new free, 4-star app, “OntheFly ” makes detailed search totally doable via an iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad.

Neither the site nor the app allows for booking. It just gives you all the tools at your fingertips, and lets you customize search as you see fit. and you can be sure you’re seeing everything that exists. Where you choose to book your preferred flight combo via the airline directly or an OTA (Orbitz, Travelocity, Expedia, Kayak) is entirely up to you.

Hardware Inventory Software

An ITSM service desk will help you keep all the updated information about the software and hardware used across the organization. The administrators need to maintain the CMDB but it’s more likely to cause errors with all the manual compilations. An automated hardware inventory tool that periodically scans all the assets and gathers all the required details will be the perfect answer for you.

Freshservice hardware inventory software helps you track all the source machines installed and manage your devices and servers throughout the hardware life-cycle. You can perform rapid network inventory and get instant summary and detailed reports. Wait, there’s more! You can have your CIs scanned bypassing the different firewalls or login credentials when you are on the move.

Freshservice Hardware Inventory Management

Freshservice Hardware Inventory Management software focuses on

Hardware inventory scanning: Scan the windows desktops/servers in the network periodically to collect the inventory and store the details in CMDB. Scan at regular intervals and configure to meet real-time needs sans manual intervention.

Track Assets Plan IT changes: Track your IT asset inventory changes easily. Plan changes, releases and workaround accordingly. Easy to update configurations and physical locations of each hardware asset.

Manage hardware cycle: Track IT hardware through a centralized system even if items exist in multiple different locations. Automate your entire IT asset life-cycle.

Asset Discovery: Each time a CI is added, the hardware inventory tool scans and adds them to the CMDB in real-time. They are categorized into Discovery Probe that comes with a firewall. The Discovery Agent is not affected by any window setting and scans all the machines, even those not connected with the servers. It requires no authentication from user.

Key Benefits:

Dynamic Discovery: Every time the Agent detects a change in the host machine, it automatically updates the data on the server.

Periodic Discovery: A weekly update is sent to the server to maintain an updated record of the assets.

Auto upgrade: No worries about upgrading the Agent, it autoruns every time the latest version is released.

BeepBox

BeepBox is an online tool for sketching and sharing chiptune melodies.

All song data is packaged into the URL at the top of your browser. When you make changes to the song, the URL is updated to reflect your changes. When you are satisfied with your song, just copy and paste the URL to save and share your song!

Instructions

You can add or remove notes by clicking on the gray rows at the top. BeepBox automatically plays the notes out loud for you. Try it!

Notes go into patterns, and you can edit one pattern at a time. Those numbered boxes at the bottom of the editor are the different patterns you can edit. Click the other boxes to move to a different part of the song, or click the arrows on the currently selected box to swap which pattern is played during that part of the song.

There are four rows of patterns that BeepBox can play simultaneously, and each row has its own set of patterns. The first three rows can play melodies and the bottom row is for drums.

The purple loop underneath the numbered boxes controls which part of the song is currently repeating. Move the loop to listen to a different part of the song, or drag the ends to expand the loop to include the whole song.

When BeepBox has focus (click on its interface above), you can use these keyboard shortcuts:

Spacebar: Pause or Resume
Z: Undo
Y or Shift Z: Redo
C: Copy the current pattern
V: Paste the current pattern
[ ]: Move the playhead backward and forward
Arrow Keys: Change which bar is selected
1-8: Reassign a pattern to the currently selected bar

In the pattern editor, you can click and drag horizontally on a note to adjust its duration. You can also click above or below an existing note to enable a rapid arpeggio/trill effect, oscillating between two or more simultaneous notes.

ADVANCED: Drag vertically from an existing note to bend its pitch, or drag vertically from above or below the note to adjust its volume.

BeepBox has many more features. Try playing with the buttons and menus on the right side to find out what it can do!

About

BeepBox does not claim ownership over songs created with it, so original songs belong to their authors.

Neither John Nesky nor BeepBox assume responsibility for any copyrighted material played on BeepBox. No songs are ever received, recorded, or distributed by BeepBox’s servers. All song data is contained in the URL after the hash (#) mark, and BeepBox running inside your browser converts that data into sound waves.

You can download an offline version of BeepBox to use when you don’t have access to the internet. The features are otherwise the same.

You can download and use the source code under the MIT license. In particular, you can use the synth code as demonstrated here to play BeepBox songs in your own Flash or JavaScript projects!

AutoIt v3 is a freeware BASIC-like scripting language designed for automating the Windows GUI and general scripting. It uses a combination of simulated keystrokes, mouse movement and window/control manipulation in order to automate tasks in a way not possible or reliable with other languages.

We looked at many editors to see which one was the most useful editor for AutoIt. We found SciTE and saw its potential and wrote a customized Lexer for the Syntax Highlighting and Syntax folding and created a special installer called SciTE4AutoIt3.

GImageX is a graphical user interface for the ImageX tool from the Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit (Windows ADK). ImageX is used to capture and apply WIM images for Windows deployments. GImageX uses the supported Microsoft WIMGAPI API for working with WIM files.

While AutoIt can be used to achieve these goals, many IT administrators are reluctant to install and learn a full scripting language when they only require a specific function. To this end AutoIt Tools will consist of small and self-contained executables that can be used for a specific purpose.

TerraER – Entity-Relationship Modeling Tool

Henrique Rocha, Ricardo Terra

TerraER is a free open-source learning tool designed to aid students in the creation of entity-relationship models. Our main goal is to provide students with a tool that reflects exactly the data modeling concepts learned in the classroom.

Web Site: http://www.terraer.com.br/index_en.html
Version tested: TerraER 2.02
System requirements: Java 1.5 or higher
License Pricing: Open Source GNU Public License, Freeware.
Support: Documentation available at our website and issue tracker system at https://github.com/rterrabh/TerraER

Data modeling is one part of the database conceptual design process. The entity-relationship model (ER model) is a largely used conceptual model proposed by Chen [1]. It defines the entities and the relationships between these entities. The ER model is simple and easy to understand, making it intelligible to both database designers and end users [2, 3, 4].

Academic database courses still adopt ER models to teach conceptual design. Nevertheless, we noticed a lack of modeling tools for this purpose. In practice, most modeling tools support logical design, which is a detailed model the designer proceeds after the conceptual model is complete. In view of such circumstances, academics (students and professors) are forced to use logical design tools instead, such as DBDesigner, ERWin, etc.

The use of existing logical design tools – rather than conceptual design ones – has two major issues: (i) they may confuse students who are learning about conceptual modeling; and (ii) they were not developed for academic purposes. To address these shortcomings, we designed TerraER, a free open-source learning tool designed to aid students in the creation of ER models. Our main goal is to provide students with a tool that reflects exactly the data modeling concepts learned in the classroom.

TerraER is distributed in a single JAR file publicly available for download at our web site www.terraer.com.br/download_en.html. The JAR file is auto-contained, i.e. it can be placed in any folder, does not require the installation of additional libraries, and does not change operating system files (e.g. windows registry). In a nutshell, TerraER requires only a Java Runtime Environment (JRE) previously installed on the target computer (www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp ).

TerraER 2.02 has the following relevant features:

  • Free and open-source (GPL);
  • Simple and small but complete application (around 5 MB);
  • Cross-platform (only needs a JRE);
  • Internationalization (English and Portuguese);
  • Persist models to XML files (a cross-platform format);
  • Clipboard transfer;
  • Model printing; and
  • Easy to learn and intuitive interface.

User Interface Feature description

TerraER was initially designed for academic purposes, i.e. to help students and professors in the task of creating ER models. Therefore, we developed the graphical user interface to be practical, intelligible, and intuitive (i.e. easy to learn and use).

The tool is a free, open-source application under the GNU Public License. Thereupon, we encourage users to directly contribute to the TerraER project (https://github.com/rterrabh/TerraER ). As an example, a B.Sc. student has contributed to the project by developing the internationalization for the English language.

Figure 1 Screenshot of TerraER 2.02 modeling a hypothetical Banking ER

The tool is developed in Java language, which makes TerraER a cross-platform application. In addition, new releases are always verified on Windows, Linux, and Mac OS.

Figure 1 illustrates the TerraER interface, which is organized into five main parts:

  1. Menu bar. It provides the users with basic functionalities, such as saving, loading, and printing the models. More important, the models are saved in an XML-based format, which directly contributes to the cross-platform feature. In practice, models saved using an operating system can be loaded on a different one without any issue;
  2. Objects toolbar. It provides commands to create ER model elements – such as entities, relationships, attributes, etc. – on Chen s notation, as adopted by Elmasri and Navathe [3];
  3. Position toolbar: It provides users with means to manipulate elements position – such as alignment, overlapping, etc. – in order to support an elegant model design;
  4. Object inspector. It lists the elements of the current ER model and allows user to select, remove, or edit them. In practice, this feature provides a quick and precise way to handle models elements;
  5. Drawing area: It shows the graphical view of the ER model under creation. The user may add and remove elements to the model. There is a zoom feature, which can be very useful when dealing with large models. Also, there is a grid feature that displays a grid to help users to position elements.

TerraER was initially designed as a teaching aid tool for academic database courses. In order to evaluate the applicability of our tool, we conducted a study in a Brazilian university to obtain the feedback from undergraduate students, which represent our target public.

In the study, we defined three assignments and divided the database course class in 10 groups. In the first assignment, five groups were required to use DBDesigner (a popular database design system) and the other five groups to use TerraER. In the second assignment, we swapped the groups. In the third and last assignment, each group could opt for which tool they prefer. In the last day of the class, the students filled an evaluation form.

The results clearly indicate a preference for TerraER as the model design tool. In fact, nine out of ten groups preferred TerraER to DBDesigner. According to the answers of the evaluation forms, the students argue that TerraER is easier to use and understand because it reflects the conceptual design learned inside the classroom.

We welcome any help from the open-source community to support TerraER. For those not comfortable with their programming skills, it is possible to contribute with suggestions, donations, and even helping in the creation of a better documentation. TerraER source-code is available at https://github.com/rterrabh/TerraER , for those willing to play a more active roll.

Academic courses still adopt ER model for database modeling. However, there is a severe lack of tools designed for this particularly purpose. In view of such circumstances, academics (professors and students) do not have other option than to rely on tools that do not follow the concepts learned inside the class. Even though these are usually popular tools, they do not draw conceptual models but logical models instead. In practice, it may negatively impact the learning curve of the students.

To address this shortcoming, we developed TerraER with the specific purpose to be adopted in academic courses. Thereupon, we made the tool simple, easy to use, and complete w.r.t. ER modeling using Chen s notation. More important, the study we conducted has shown students preference for TerraER because it reflects the concepts learned in the classroom.

Last but not least, TerraER is a small, multi-platform, free, and open-source software system, which make the tool the proper choice for conceptual data modeling. As far as we can guarantee, TerraER is currently (2013-year) employed in databases courses in ten Brazilian universities.

My favorite Windows Event log tools

Contents of this article

You probably know Event Viewer, a baked in Windows tool. For sophisticated event log analysis, you often need additional tools. Some of the tools discussed here are applications, and some are websites.

EventID.NET ^

I have a paid subscription for EventID.NET. and use this database for event ID searches. The site is a repository of almost all Windows event IDs and offers in-depth write ups, screenshots, and links to external sources. A one year subscription for an individual costs $29 USD.

EventID.net -Search for event IDs

ServerFault.com ^

The consistently useful ServerFault.com website has served me well since its inception. It is a crowd-sourced community of experts based on a Digg type voting system, in which a poster asks questions based on issues they are confronted with, usually scenario based, with Event IDs.

ServerFault.com – Question and answer site for admins

Experts-Exchange.com ^

Experts-Exchange.com is another community site which is not limited to any platform or architecture. It has a similar voting system as Serverfault.com and issues awards based on the helpfulness of the “experts”.

Notice that Experts-Exchange.com is not free. After the 30-day free trial, prices vary from $12.95 USD for the monthly plan to the the two year plan for $189.95 USD.

Experts-Exchange.com – Tech support from experts

ManagEngine EventLog Analyzer ^

I have used many of ManageEngines free tools, and EventLog Analyzer is my favorite. The tool works with Unix/Linux/Windows and can be configured to give real time alerts and offers sophisticated reporting features. The holy grail of all IT logging is the centralized logging ability. EventLog Analyzer can also collect logs from devices such as routers, web services and FTP servers. The free version supports up to 5 hosts. The Professional Edition starts at $395 USD for 10 hosts. Check out the price list for other configurations.

Eventlog tool ManageEngine EventLog Analyzer

GFI EventsManager ^

GFI EventsManager provides similar features as the ManageEngine product offering real time alerts and support for SNMPv2 traps. I like the auto archive feature and its search filters. How have network performance monitoring tools evolved? #network #performance #monitoring #tool

#

How have network performance monitoring tools evolved?

Once upon a time, enterprise network engineers had to provide network access and sufficient bandwidth to various connected servers, applications and end devices. From an OSI model perspective, the focus was on Layers 1-4 only. Upper OSI layers were more or less ignored, as all traffic and data flows running across a network shared all bandwidth and queuing resources.

As time went on, network equipment became sophisticated to the point where different data flows could be identified and treated differently on the network. Various quality of service (QoS) and application-level traffic shaping techniques can be used to accomplish this goal. Additionally, the ever-increasing reliance on business-critical applications has forced network engineers to understand upper layers of the OSI model so they can help to identify any inefficiencies or problems related to the network, server OS, virtualization software and applications themselves. But in order to do that, a tool is needed to identify such problems.

So, it’s important to understand exactly what your organization needs — and properly gauge the tradeoff between granularity and complexity.

In many cases, network performance monitoring tools evolved from more traditional and less sophisticated network monitoring software. These monitoring tools commonly used ICMP ping and Simple Network Monitoring Protocol (SNMP) polling/traps to verify the health of a network. More modern additions include the ability to monitor, baseline and intelligently analyze possible images all the way to the application itself. Most modern network performance tools have the ability to perform the following five functions:

  1. Network and application monitoring
  2. Network problem analysis
  3. Application data and flow capture analysis
  4. Virtualization and OS problem detection
  5. Root cause analysis

Depending on the network performance monitoring vendor, these tasks are performed with varying levels of granularity. And the more precise they are, the more complex implementation and management can be. So, it’s important to understand exactly what your organization needs — and properly gauge the tradeoff between granularity and complexity. That being said, let’s further explore the five functions today’s network performance monitoring tools commonly offer.

Network and application monitoring

As mentioned earlier, today’s network performance monitoring tools evolved from network monitoring that leveraged ICMP ping and the SNMP protocol. Routine pings from the network monitoring server were sent to various networks, servers and other end devices that required monitoring. If the monitored device stopped responding to the ping requests, the monitoring tool would mark the device as down and would alert support staff.

SNMP collects and organizes various types of data from network and server components capable of supporting the protocol.

For network devices, this commonly means monitoring specific device interface states and data throughput rates over time. It can also monitor hardware health, including power supplies, fans and memory utilization, among others.

Some network performance monitoring tools are also capable of collecting and triggering from various syslog messages. Syslog is a common standard for infrastructure device log messages. The messages are sent to the centralized network monitoring tool to be stored, analyzed and used to notify support engineers in the event of a system malfunction.

Network monitoring tools have the beefed-up capability to monitor availability and performance statistics all the way up to the application level. This type of monitoring usually relies on software plug-ins or OS settings configured to send monitoring data back to the centralized monitoring server.

Virtualization and OS problem detection

Issues also can — and do — arise between the network and the application. This includes problems at the virtualization level, server operating system and any middleware the application relies on to operate. Virtualization hypervisors can be individually monitored for performance problems that can cause slowdowns at the application level. The same is also true for monitoring the host OS and middleware that orchestrates communication over distributed systems. Network performance monitoring vendors use differing methods to monitor these types of problems and some support a greater variety of hypervisors, operating systems and middleware software than others.

Network problem analysis

In addition to providing simple up/down status and utilization information, network performance monitoring products can perform more sophisticated and automated network troubleshooting. This includes routing protocol monitoring and alerting when unscheduled routing protocol changes occur. Additionally, some products possess intelligence to understand how various WAN technologies, virtual overlays and QoS features operate. They, too, can be set to automatically alert when problems occur and even take automated actions to resolve issues.

Application data and flow capture analysis

The most important duties of modern network performance monitoring tools revolve around data and flow capture analysis. There are a few different methods to capture data packets on various parts of the network to be used for automated and/or manual analysis. Among the most common:

  1. Deployment of distributed data collection agents throughout critical parts of the network
  2. The ability to leverage packet capture functionality built into certain router/switch hardware

The ability to examine packets to perform more granular application analysis is a growing need in many enterprise organizations. By using deep packet inspection. network administrators can identify more application-related communication problems that would otherwise go unnoticed.

Network flow collection sweeps up IP network statistics as data enters and exits network interfaces. Once this data is exported to a centralized server and analyzed using network performance monitoring flow analysis tools, network support administrators can identify traffic source and destination information, as well as detail QoS policies the traffic encounters as it traverses the network. Ultimately, the data can be used to identify any configuration issues or congestion along various network paths. between network devices.

Root cause analysis

The ability to combine various events collected and analyzed on a network performance monitoring tool can also be used to form an automated root cause analysis. If an issue occurred on the network that triggered events on multiple components, many network performance monitoring tools use artificial intelligence to correlate the events and determine a likely root cause to the problem. This is one of the trickier functions to configure, since it requires all devices and monitoring systems be configured perfectly. For example, if device times are not synchronized using the Network Time Protocol. event times will be incorrect. This can negatively affect the accuracy of the root cause analysis engine. But once set up and properly maintained, automated root cause analysis tools can save a tremendous amount of time from a troubleshooting perspective.

  • Check the new format,
  • Select your certificate file,
  • Click convert button.

DER format It is a binary form of PEM. It has extension .der or .cer.

DER is typically used with Java platforms. Converter can change the type of certificate to this format to change a private key, please use OpenSSL commands.

PKCS#7 or P7B format Is usually stored in Base64 format and has extension .p7b or .p7c. Files in this format contain lines “—–BEGIN PKCS7—–” and “—–END PKCS7—–“. This format is just for certificates, not for private key.

PKCS#7 and P7B are installed on Microsoft Windows and Java Tomcat servers.

PKCS#12 or PFX format Is binary format storing the server certificate, intermediates certificates, and private key in one file. Usually has the extension .pfx or .p12. Typically are used on Windows machines.

When converting PFX format to PEM, in one file will be included all certificates and private key. To separate it, you need to open this file in a simple text editor, copy every single part (with BEGIN and END lines) to different files and save it as certificate.cer, CACert.cer and privatekey.key.

Tool for finding cheap flights from departure city without entering destination
