Top 8 Best Airfare Price Predictor Tools and Apps

Recomended

I f you’re a traveler as I am, you sure know how important it is to know the fair value of your trip, and be able to save money while flying. But it takes a long time to check so many different websites for deals, and then go back to Google and check your favorite airline’s website once again. This is why tools have been created in order to help us make traveling easier. and cheaper.

Some of these tools and applications are meant to showcase the deals that suit your interest, some others are trying to compare prices and show what the cheapest airfares are. While a few years ago it was difficult to find any type of software that could help, now it’s hard to choose which one’s the best. In this piece we re going to tell you a bit more about eight of the most relevant airplane deal comparison apps, so you can choose the flight that suit you.

Skyscanner

My favorite tool is and will probably continue to be Skyscanner , because it’s very good at showing you what airfares are going to look like in the next year. Most of the tools we know tend to only show details regarding the next month or first few months, but only few of them go as far as a year.

In addition to that, is also able to help you decide where you’d like to go. If you still don’t know where you’d like to spend your next holiday, you can simply enter the area or country you’re looking for, and the cheapest flights will be shown. For example, when I was looking for options in the United States, I simply had to add the location I was departing from, and a wide variety of low fares would be shown to me. I could either go to California, Florida, or many other locations.

On the bright side, this tool can help you cut costs by researching indirect routes, either than only direct flights. On the bad side, though, the “flexible” feature that used to be included is not available anymore. This one was helping you by suggestion near-by locations – if you wanted to go to Bonn or Koln in Germany, it would also suggest cheaper versions that took you to Dusseldorf or Dortmund.

Kayak

You’ve probably heard of Kayak before – this one’s a tool that searches through many websites at the same time, in order to come up with the best deals for you. All you have to do is go on the website, enter the details of your trip, and wait for it to do its job.

If you’re not in a hurry, Kayak is also going to show you the best options during the next couple of months. And if you don’t find anything too exciting at the moment, you also have the option of setting an alert. This one will send you an email whenever you want – it can be scheduled to alert you daily, weekly, or only monthly. Whatever option you go for, this will send you the best options for your preferred destination.

StudentUniverse

Because traveling tends to be even more complicated when you’re a student, the StudentUniverse tool is especially dedicated to them. While some other websites simply try to inform you about the best options, this one tells us it actually negotiates prices for you.

By working directly with the main airlines in the world, this tool is able to provide students with deals to choose from. As they say, “we are able to negotiate special fares because airlines can depend on our patented verification technology to make sure that students are the ones benefiting from these reduced fares.” So, long story short, don’t try to trick them into thinking you’re a student if you’re not!

STA Travel

Working in a similar way as the tool before, this one is also dedicated to students. It works with many global airlines in order to negotiate and win some of the most exclusive traveling deals. To be able to take advantage of this website, you don’t only have to be a student, but also under the age of 26.

Thanks to STA Travel students can book their next tickets for traveling, for their internships or volunteering trips they have planned at a reduced price. Plus they are also able to change their departure and arrival after purchasing the tickets, as STA is the only one providing flexible dates.

Momondo

Momondo is a well-known traveling resource that takes a look at over 700 websites before choosing the best fares and deals. The reason why it works so well is that the company designed robots that search for flights just as a human would.

Although a very good tool to use, it has the disadvantage of being specially designed for Europe. This means it can work great if you’re looking for flights to Amsterdam, Rome, Prague or Budapest. However, it’s not going to help you find great deals for going to the United States, APAC or Africa.

Priceline

If you are traveling just for fun, Priceline might be the best option you have. Why is that? Because it requires some flexibility in order to find the best deals – once you’re not stuck with specific dates for your trips, it can help you save up to 50%.

This tool works by choosing off-peak flights for you and using connections. This way, you’re not flying when everyone else is to a typical summer location. At the same time, you may stop in a few places, have an hour to change the plane, or you might as well have a long time to wait, which allows you to visit that location, too.

On the other hand, this website is only going to provide you with the dates of your flights. This means that you will find out when the plane is leaving and when you should take your flight back after you made the purchase.

AirfareWatchDog

The AirfareWatchDog tool was initially created to find the best fares. However, it recently turned into an alerts tool that allows you to enter the details of your ideal trip and sends you the best deals at a later time. You only decide where you want to go and what the latest date is then you start receiving alerts.

They are typically emailed to you every day, a few times a week or only once every week. It is very popular because it covers most airlines and is sure to also include smaller carriers. This way, you can go to places in South Africa or even Asia without having to worry about the price.

FareCompare

Last but not least, one of the most advance airfare price predictor tools available online is Fare Compare . This website compares flights’ prices from over 500 airlines from all over the world and is known to collect information about old and current airfares. This enables them to tell you what the best price is, whether you should wait before you purchase your ticket or not.

Being dedicated to true travelers, it also includes many tips and suggestions, while it comes with a Getaway Map. This one is meant for those of you who haven’t decided where to go yet – it’s an interactive, user-friendly map that shows you where you could go with the budget you have.

Road Trip Planner with Stops: Tools – Tips for a Perfect

#planning a trip
#

Route

The first step is the fun one: selecting the route. To do so, decide what s most important to you: distance, destination, or budget. Once you know this, you can begin researching and building out the rest of your plans.

When in the planning stage, Roadtrippers  will be your best friend! Founded by two fellow wanderlusters, this web and mobile service provides a seemingly endless database of inspiration. Explore tested routes, or plan your own and discover the variety of interest points that can be found along your newly blazed trail.

From culture to campsites and nature to nightclubs, Roadtrippers will help you plan a trip tailored to your travel style. It’ll also help you budget by providing cost estimates for the gas require for the selected trip.

Make sure your route is broken down into doable driving segments both to and from your final destination. Your plan should also include a list of attractions you want to see along the way. The more you have on the list the better, but be prepared to skip a few. You never know what will happen on the open road. Being flexible is key.

Lodging

Once you know where you’re going, you’ll need to decide where to stay.

If your road trip is all about the great outdoors and you plan on camping, visit recreation.gov to find and book campsites on your route.

Prefer more modern accommodations? Priceline. Hotels.com. Hotwire. Expedia. or any one of your preferred hotel booking sites can help you book a hotel at each check point along your route.

Or, check out AirBnb for a more unique lodging selection.

Appify

You’ve heard it, you’ve probably said it, and we all know it’s true: “there’s an app for everything.” And as a matter of fact, there’s quite a few to aid in your road trip success. Here are the ones we suggest downloading before you go:

TripIt . Yeah, so this might be a shameless plug, but we can actually help! You’ve already selected and booked your lodging and attractions, so let us automagically create an itinerary for you. That way you can find all your plans in one place and you won’t have to dig through all your email to find times, locations, and confirmation numbers. TripIt will also automatically generate the best route between stops with turn by turn driving directions and Google Maps. It s perfect if you re looking for a road trip planner with stops.

Along The Way : Whether you’re in need of a bathroom, caffeine fix, retail therapy, or just about anything else, Along The Way can help you locate whatever you’re looking for without getting off track.

Gasbuddy : Unfortunately, you’ll have to frequent the gas stations on your road trip, which makes this app essential. Gasbuddy provides a crowd-sourced list of gas prices to help you find the best deal near you.

Spotify : Every road trip needs good jams and lots of them! Although the free version of this service is awesome, it’ll definitely be worth your money to upgrade to premium for your road trip. For just $9.99 a month you have access to any song at anytime … even when you re offline.

AAA : Although we suggest you check out your car before leaving, you never know what can happen out there on the road. With this app, you can contact roadside assistance and help them locate you. You can also discover AAA discount locations, Diamond-rated hotels, restaurants, and attractions.

Wi-Fi Finder : Whether you need to post to Facebook, Facetime mom, or email your boss, Wi-Fi Finder will help you stay connected by locating both free and paid Wi-Fi spots.

Documentation

On your road trip you’re going to see some breathtaking sights and make some incredible memories, so documentation will be key.

If you’re into the visuals, snapping pics on your phone is a must. Step up your editing game with VSCO Cam ; this will help your pictures come to life and look at least half as beautiful as in real life. Then your photo will be ready to share on Instagram. Also, don’t forget to tag your pictures with #TripItPic to share your travels and have a chance to be featured on our page .

For your videos, you can use Magisto to automatically create and edit amazing videos, complete with music and effects.

Evernote is yet another great documentation tool. Write down everything you love and learn along the way, and add photos to create the ultimate travel journal.

Any other road trip tips? Share them below! Happy travels!

Create Dials and Speedometer Scorecard #download, #exceldashboards, #excel, #tools, #samples, #templates,

#

In this article we will take an Excel source containing scorecard information and convert into dials and speedometer charts.

We will also create few bar trending charts.

Consider the below sample data

Source File: You can download the excel file here

The above excel file tracks few metrics such as safety, quality and revenue. This is just a sample data and may not make sense in actual world but just imagine a manufacturing company that wants to track its overall safety and quality score and also track its total revenue. Now the company may use its own method at deriving the individual safety and quality scores.

They may have a dedicated team to collect safety violations and product defects and then use some formulae to convert those data into final score for any given month. We are not concerned with any of the methods on how those scores are generated. You are the dashboard person and the company has provided you the metrics by each month and now your job is produce a nice dashboard that shows relevant charts for the given data.

Since the data is tracked for each month, it makes sense to show a line or bar chart trending for the metrics.

Dials and Speedometers are relevant when we need to show performance of a single value. So in this case, since we have 12 month data, how do we show single value on the meter chart?

One solution is to show an Average value for the safety and Quality metrics or we could show a dial that shows the current month values.

So the GOAL for this exercise is: Show bar chart for Safety trending 12 months and show average and current month value on the dial chart.

Dial chart requirement: For the dial chart, we are measuring the performance, whether we are on track or missed the goal. In order to achieve that, we create three new columns for safety such as safety_bad , safety_ok , safety_good . These values need to be decided by the company management. If you are not sure, then look at previous year data and decide what should be good and bad values. The dials are used to guide the company to perform better or atleast improve that portion of the company operation represented by the metric.

First let us create the date hierarchy columns from the Period column. You need to make sure that the Period column is an actual Excel date column, else the hierarchy will not be generated

You may click on the color icon to change the colors of your choice

Next, we select the range boundary values

The safety_bad value from our spreadsheet represents the lower boundary of our bad region, safety_ok represents the upper boundary of our bad region, similarly safety_ok is the lower bound for our ok region and so on. For the Good upper bound we simply typed a value but as general practice we should have one more column for the upper bound of the final region. In our case the final region is Safety Good .

Next, for the pointer value, select the column that you want to show on the dial chart. In our case we select Safety and aggregation as Avg

Next, we click on Create chart . This action shows the dialog below

We change the chart title to Average Safety

NOTE: remove the double quotes in the SQL statement for the group by. This will cause an error.

Click on Fully Apply

Here is our final Dial Chart

Next, create a dial chart to show current month value

We will change some conditions on the main Qlet. Right click on the Name and select Duplicate

It creates an exact copy of the qlet table. We change the name to Current Month

Right click on the Period column and select Create – Create Date Filter

This action shows a dialog as shown below

First change the operator to Between

Next select First Day of Month for the from and Last Day of Month for the To val.

Click on Use This Filter

This action applies the filter to the Qlet and it shows only currrent month row

Next, right click on Current Month and select Create Chart

All of the settings remain the same except the Aggregation , make sure to select NONE

IBM unveils Hadoop analytics tools #hadoop #analytics #tools

IBM unveils Hadoop analytics tools

It is almost two years since IBM first outlined its PureData System for Hadoop startegy but on now the company is shifting up a gear with the announcement its Biginsights for Apache Hadoop analytics tools.

While more companies are using the open source tool for collecting and storing a very large sets of variable data, IBM argues companies are struggling “to realize its full potential in every part of their business”.

As examples it quotes a business analyst who needs to quickly find relevant information and the data scientists who need to make sense of the data with statistical modeling both with the corollary that the highly complex environments that are created need to be easy for IT to manage and deploy for everyone in their organization. No small task.

According to IBM, BigInsights for Apache Hadoop includes ‘a broad data science toolset to query data, visualise, explore and conduct distributed machine learning at scale”

IBM has announced three new modules:

  • IBM BigInsights Analyst: This will include IBM’s SQL engine and spreadsheet as well as visualisations to find data “quickly and easily”, IBM says. The company believes that already the number of SQL queries that are running is “in the billions” and that with BigInsights Analyst, the efficiency can be improved, it says, by approximately 2x to 4x on Apache Hadoop, “depending on the shuffle size”.
  • IBM BigInsights Data Scientist: This is another new machine-learning engine, IBM says, that automatically tunes its performance over large-scale data to find interesting patterns. Along with this is also has “over a dozen industry-specific algorithms” including Decision Trees, PageRank and Clustering. It will also provide native support for open source R statistical computing so that existing R algorithms can be leveraged, the company said.
  • IBM BigInsights Enterprise Management: This consists of some new management tools aimed at speeding up results, IBM said.

IBM also announced the IBM Open Plarform with Apache Hadoop which gives the “necessary data access controls and authentication for an enterprise”, the company said. IBM has also adding support for Apache Spark.

Big Data

Shorten time to value

As the pace of business speeds up and the velocity of data from the Internet of Things increases, organizations are finding it increasingly difficult to capture and process big data in real time without either expensive, manual processes or the integration of fragmented point solutions.

Both introduce complexities for IT and corresponding delays delivering data to the business. Organizations need to shorten the time to value for enterprise cloud-ready data lakes so they can:

  • Drive profitability
  • Uncover opportunities
  • Detect problems
  • Accelerate innovation
  • Deliver exceptional customer experiences.

According to a Bain Co. survey, 59% of organizations believe they lack the capabilities to generate meaningful business insights from their data.

A systematic approach to big data management enables you to quickly and repeatably get more business value from more big data without more risk.

Cloud-ready from day one

Support doesn’t stop at popular on-premises Hadoop distributions. Thanks to out-of-the-box connectivity to cloud databases, cloud data stores, and cloud applications, you can truly turn any data into trusted data assets anywhere.

Rapid-fire insight delivery

Informatica’s library of hundreds of prebuilt connectors and simplified stream processing on top of open-source and proprietary streaming engines let you integrate nearly any data anywhere. Support for Tableau Data Extracts and a hub-based publish/subscribe architecture also let you repeatably deliver more data faster to more data targets.

Self-service governed data

Informatica’s self-service data preparation enables faster business access to more trusted insights so the right people get the right data at the right time. It includes:

  • Built-in data lineage
  • Enterprise-wide data asset discovery
  • Smart data set recommendations
  • Crowdsourced data asset tagging and sharing

Sensitive data detection

Informatica’s risk-centric approach to protecting big data automatically classifies sensitive data and proactively detects threats of unauthorized data access or proliferation. Based upon assessments, data can be non-intrusively protected for secure access to contextual information.

How can we help?

Top 10 Web Development Apps for Android Devices

As an avid Android device user with both an Android tablet and phone, of course I am always looking for apps that would be of use to web developers. After a bit of searching I was able to find apps for just about every aspect of web development, from the web server itself to an FTP client to move the files, to a source code viewer that let’s you view the source code on any web page, analytics tools to allow you to analyze your website, to custom apps for the major CMSes WordPress, Drupal and Joomla!.

Using the Android web development apps I found, I was able to create a web page from scratch, test it on a web server that is running on my Android device from anywhere on my local network, move the file over to my external web host using an FTP app so it’s live on the web, SSH to my external web server to work with the file live, and the page was ready for the masses, able to be viewed by anyone with an internet connection. My inner geek was smiling!

Since I have several sites which run on the Joomla! and Drupal CMSes, I can now potentially create content and publish that content directly from my Android device using the Joomla! and Drupal Android apps.

While the likelyhood that I would need to be able to create content or handle a “web emergency” while I was out on the go is not likely for me personally, I could easily see a blogger writing their latest work while actually on the scene of an event, and then using one of the tools we will discuss here, they would be able to instantly publish the blog to their website, complete with images. Yes, you could actually update your website while you’re sitting on the beach enjoying the breeze, or more likely, while you are on the scene of some major event, be it a trade conference or accident scene.

Let’s get started, and take a look at some Android web development apps.

AndFTP

AndFTP is an FTP client app that allows you to transfer files to your web server via not only FTP, but also via SFTP, SCP and FTPS protocols. You can set up several different FTP servers using AndFTP, and it also comes with a device file browser and a FTP file browser (which means you can see the files both on your Android device as well as the remote server). Like a typical FTP client, you are able to rename, delete, copy, set permissions and create folders.

JavaScript Reference

The JavaScript Reference app is the only reference app I have mentioned here, not because there aren’t reference apps and cheat sheets for other web development languages (there are HTML, CSS, JavaScript, jQuery and many other cheat sheets apps available), but because this one is derived from the W3CSchool’s own documentation, and uses a clean, easy-to-use interface.

Properties and methods of each object are detailed, along with examples for each. This is a great resource, and covers all built-in JavaScript objects, browser objects and HTML DOM objects.

kWS – Android Web Server

The kWS – Android Web Server is a very basic web server that runs on your Android device. It isn’t a surprise that a web server can run on an Android device–after all, Android is based on the Linux operating system. What is surprising is that it is so very lightweight and fast that if you are loading pages from it through your local wifi network, you won’t be able to notice a difference from any other web server that you access.

The kWS web server implements HTTP-1.0 and is capable of hosting most file types, and works like a typical web server. You won’t be likely to be running your website off of this server permenantly, but for testing out a page, it comes in very handy.

Analytix for Google Analytics

If you are used to working with Google Analytics (GA) for your website, you will be very likely to want to install and use the Analytix app. It provides you with access to most of the details from your Google Analytics account–almost in real time. It provides hourly views and clean visualizations, which comes in very handy for SEO work.

There are other GA apps out there for Android, but in my opinion, Analytix is the only one worth installing and working with.

View Web Source

Although it may seem that being able to view the source of a web page is something common to all web browsers, once you are using an Android device and the stock Android browser (and even other browsers on an Android device), you quickly realize that “View Source” is not a standard function on Android devices. Enter the View Web Source app, which works just as you would expect.

All you have to do is to enter a URL, then you are presented with the page’s source code, which you can then copy to your device’s clipboard for use later.

WordPress for Android

If you are a typical developer, you have probably worked with at least one of the top open source content management systems (CMSes). I looked for Android apps which would allow me to work with each of them, and was able to find one or more apps for each CMS. We’ll start with the WordPress for Android app.

WordPress for Android is, like WordPress itself, an open source app that allows you to create new posts, edit content, view stats and manage comments–and it comes with built-in notifications, so you’re kept up to date as you work.

Drupal Editor

Having a Drupal site myself, I definitely wanted to check out the Drupal Editor app.

Like the other CMS apps, it allows you to create, post and edit articles on the site. The Blog API has to be enabled in order for the Drupal Editor app to work, but if you run a Drupal website, this is a simple tasks.

Joooid 1.1 Joomla! Editor

Since I also have several Joomla! websites, I was eager to try out the Joooid 1.1 Editor app. It allows you to publish articles that include HTML text, images, galleries and maps which include the GPS-determined position where the article was published.

Like the others, I installed the Joooid 1.1 app to my tablet, installed the plug-in which went with it on my Joomla! website, and tried it out. Nada–several error messages later and some Google searching and I found out that the version of Joomla! I was running (version 1.6), was not compatible with Jooid 1.1, but that Joooid 1.2 beta would indeed do the job.

I downloaded and installed the beta plugin and Joooid 1.2 beta Joomla! Editor. following the installation instructions on their website, and within 10 minutes I was creating content and working with my Joomla! website–through my Android device.

Webmaster’s HTML Editor Lite

Sure, Android devices come with a rudamentary text editor, but it’s not really made with the intention of people using it for editing web pages. That’s where Webmaster’s HTML Editor Lite comes to mind. It not only allows you to edit HTML, it also enables you to edit and work with CSS, PHP and JavaScript, and features syntax highlighting and code completion.

ConnectBot SSH Client

While you may not have a reason to use an SSH or telnet client often, when you need one, nothing else will do. I found the ConnectBot SSH Client app to be the full-featured SSH client I was looking for.

ConnectBot is a Secure Shell client that allows you to connect to your web server, so you are able to transfer files back and forth, make edits and run commands on your remote web host, directly from your Android device.

Conclusion

We’ve pointed out some web development apps for Android devices that can save you time and provide you with a way to let your inner geek shine–because it’s just too much fun to be able to create, develop and deploy websites–using your smartphone or tablet. And we only scratched the surface–there are countless other web development reference apps, knowledge testing apps, cheat code apps and more for the Android-loving web developer.

Qualitative Data Analysis – Software – Tools #qualitative #data #analysis #tools

Qualitative Data Analysis Software

What is Qualitative Data Analysis Software?

Computer Assisted Qualitative Data Analysis Software, CAQDAS i.e. the application of qualitative data analysis software has become very common among qualitative researchers nowadays.

The first attempts at creating something resembling what we know today as qualitative data analysis software were made in the 60s, but it was not until the 80s and early 90s when they began to be widely recognized in the field of qualitative analysis .

Today the use of software to assist qualitative analysts is decidely a must, and although there is a considerable range of programs to choose from, not many of them provide the professional researcher with a full complement of all the research tools required for the complex tasks involved in the data analysis of qualitative material. While each one of the multitude includes specific research tools for the handling and storage of different qualitative data, some of them can work only with text; the better ones can handle images, sound and video. Some qualitative data analysis software tools build on hierarchical trees of categories, others let the researcher create their own trees , and others simply list the categories alphabetically.

Most of them can create reports according to the analyst s needs; some can be used as a first step in the analysis of data, and the results can be exported to other programs for further analysis.

Although the tools in the more professional qualitative data analysis software have revolutionized the way of doing qualitative data analysis. there are still qualitative researchers who systematize their data manually in a reliable way.

Together with the increase of the use of these programs, many workshops to train researchers in the use of qualitative data analysis software have been developed. Some workshops are led by universities and research centers, and others are provided by private enterprises. Some are offered to small groups of researchers, others are offered to anyone who wants to learn to use these programs. But most of them are one-day or two-day training workshops, which guarantee participants that they will acquire the adequate skills to use a specific software in their own qualitative projects.

It is clear that the introduction of dedicated qualitative data analysis software has both expanded the ways in which qualitative researchers can collect data and also the settings and situations from which data can be collected. The other major impact of technology on qualitative work has been on how the analysis is done.

Computer assisted qualitative data analysis software (CAQDAS) or qualitative data analysis software refers to the wide range of analysis software now available that supports a variety of analytic styles in qualitative work.

NDPI – ntop #sflow #tools

#

nDPI

Open and Extensible LGPLv3 Deep Packet Inspection Library.

nDPI is a ntop-maintained superset of the popular OpenDPI library. Released under the LGPL license, its goal is to extend the original library by adding new protocols that are otherwise available only on the paid version of OpenDPI. In addition to Unix platforms, we also support Windows, in order to provide you a cross-platform DPI experience. Furthermore, we have modified nDPI do be more suitable for traffic monitoring applications, by disabling specific features that slow down the DPI engine while being them un-necessary for network traffic monitoring.

nDPI is used by both ntop and nProbe for adding application-layer detection of protocols, regardless of the port being used. This means that it is possible to both detect known protocols on non-standard ports (e.g. detect http non ports other than 80), and also the opposite (e.g. detect Skype traffic on port 80). This is because nowadays the concept of port=application no longer holds.

We are continuously extending nDPI and so far many protocols are supported including:

Handling Encrypted Content

The trend of Internet traffic is going towards encrypted content often using SSL. In order to let nDPI support encrypted connections, we have added a decoder for SSL (both client and server) certificates, thus we can figure out the protocol using the encryption certificate. This allows us to identify protocols such as Citrix Online and Apple iCloud that otherwise would be undetected.

Documentation

You can refer to the documentation page for nDPI manuals.

Please Contribute!

DPI is a time-consuming activity as protocols (in particular P2P) change quite often. This means that it s necessary to update the code from time to time and add extensions. We would encourage anyone out there to help us adding or enhancing new protocols: we will put your contributions on our SVN and make them available to everyone free of charge. In fact the main reason why we decided to go for nDPI instead of using the original library, is that the company behind OpenDPI has never replied to our offers to merge the extensions we coded onto the original source code.

Operating Systems

License

nDPI is distributed under the GNU LGPLv3 license and available in source code format.

Get It

nDPI is automatically downloaded when you build ntop and nProbe. However nothing prevents you from using it as a standalone DPI library. The source code can be downloaded from the download section.

6 Affordable Video Conferencing Solutions

Meet from anywhere

Gathering your team together for a meeting is time-consuming and not always practical. Thankfully, the right video conferencing can let you meet from anywhere, saving you time and money. Here are six affordable videoconferencing solutions that will let you meet with employees, colleagues or clients from anywhere, using your existing desktop PC or mobile device.

Google Hangouts ($5/month per user)

Google’s Hangouts is an easy-to-use videoconferencing app that’s pretty powerful, considering that its basic features are free. Businesses will probably want to invest in a subscription to Google Apps for Work ($5/user per month), which adds a bunch of work-friendly features to Hangouts. The additional include integrated online calendars and the ability to collaborate on documents and spreadsheets during a video chat session. Plus, you’ll be able to sign in and out with the branded email address that your company already uses.

Adobe Connect ($500 per year)

Better known for its design and image editing software, Adobe also provides a top-notch video conferencing service called Adobe Connect. The platform has all the tools you need for a smooth virtual meeting. Participants can connect instantly from almost any Internet-connected device, and the software boasts a pared-down interface that’s easy to use for beginners. Attendees can share slides and documents to work collaboratively. You can also run polls and take shared notes during a meeting. And Adobe Connect has advanced features such as the ability to create breakout rooms, private video chat rooms for more focused discussion with a smaller group.

Skype for Business ($2/month per user)

Skype is best-known as a video-calling service to chat with friends and family members. But for business users on a budget, Skype is a competent video-conferencing tool. Video chatting with one other person is free, but upgrading to Skype for Business for $2/month per user per month adds a few important features such as group video calling with up to 250 participants. Paying for a premium account also opens up group screen sharing so you and your colleagues can share documents, spreadsheets and presentations and work together.

Cisco WebEx ($24/month, $228/year)

Cisco, one of the heavy hitters in the enterprise-grade video conferencing space, also provides the WebEx service for small businesses. A free version is available, but it only supports voice calling; for video, you’ll have to upgrade to the Premium 8 version, which costs $24 per month, or $228 per year. The entry-level subscription lets up to eight users at once join a meeting remotely, and allows for screen sharing for easy presentations. Users can also share documents, spreadsheets and PDFs for collaborative editing. And the service includes an interactive whiteboard feature, letting users share notes, draw charts and more.

Citrix GoToMeeting ($39/month)

GoToMeeting offers a feature-packed baseline subscription for $49 per month, or $468 per year, letting up to 25 people join at once for a face-to-face virtual meeting. The service makes it easy for hosts to schedule meetings, and makes it easy for guests to join for free by clicking an invitation link from any Web-connected PC or mobile device. The service also has features such as speaker identification, and it offers screen-sharing tools for business presentations. You can even share your keyboard and mouse controls with meeting attendees for smooth collaboration.

Fuze ($8/month)

Fuze is an affordable videoconferencing service with a solid feature set. A subscription to Fuze Pro starts at just $8 per month, and lets up to 125 people join a virtual meeting through simultaneous video feeds. The service lets you share your computer screen or an individual program window for instant presentations. It also features a set of markup tools to annotate and edit documents, PDFs and videos collaboratively. Participants can join a meeting from almost any Web-connected device, and hosts can record virtual meetings to review them later.

My favorite Windows Event log tools – 4sysops #event #log #tool,event

#

My favorite Windows Event log tools

Contents of this article

You probably know Event Viewer, a baked in Windows tool. For sophisticated event log analysis, you often need additional tools. Some of the tools discussed here are applications, and some are websites.

EventID.NET ^

I have a paid subscription for EventID.NET. and use this database for event ID searches. The site is a repository of almost all Windows event IDs and offers in-depth write ups, screenshots, and links to external sources. A one year subscription for an individual costs $29 USD.

EventID.net -Search for event IDs

ServerFault.com ^

The consistently useful ServerFault.com website has served me well since its inception. It is a crowd-sourced community of experts based on a Digg type voting system, in which a poster asks questions based on issues they are confronted with, usually scenario based, with Event IDs.

ServerFault.com – Question and answer site for admins

Experts-Exchange.com ^

Experts-Exchange.com is another community site which is not limited to any platform or architecture. It has a similar voting system as Serverfault.com and issues awards based on the helpfulness of the “experts”.

Notice that Experts-Exchange.com is not free. After the 30-day free trial, prices vary from $12.95 USD for the monthly plan to the the two year plan for $189.95 USD.

Experts-Exchange.com – Tech support from experts

ManagEngine EventLog Analyzer ^

I have used many of ManageEngines free tools, and EventLog Analyzer is my favorite. The tool works with Unix/Linux/Windows and can be configured to give real time alerts and offers sophisticated reporting features. The holy grail of all IT logging is the centralized logging ability. EventLog Analyzer can also collect logs from devices such as routers, web services and FTP servers. The free version supports up to 5 hosts. The Professional Edition starts at $395 USD for 10 hosts. Check out the price list for other configurations.

Eventlog tool ManageEngine EventLog Analyzer

GFI EventsManager ^

GFI EventsManager provides similar features as the ManageEngine product offering real time alerts and support for SNMPv2 traps. I like the auto archive feature and its search filters. GFI doesn’t offer a free edition but you can download a free trial. For a Server and 10 clients, GFI EventsManager costs $440 USD.

Event log tool GFI EventsManager

Netikus.net EventSentry ^

EventSentry offers quite a few interesting features that go far beyond event log monitoring and analysis: Compliance tracking, package managing, compliance tracking, log file monitoring, system health monitoring, and web reports. EventSentry Light is its free version and is a must-have tool for every admin doing event log analysis. Check out the comparison table to get an overview of the capabilities for its free and full version. A configuration with 10 hosts will cost you $698 USD. The complete price list can be found here .

Event log tool – Netikus.net EventSentry

Do you know any other good event log analysis tool?

Top 8 Best Airfare Price Predictor Tools and Apps #e #travel

Best bookkeeping software

Richard T. Taylor | Treasurer, Taylor Oil Propane, Inc. Enterprise is the absolute best bookkeeping software on the market today for a small-to-medium size business. We have been using Enterprise for the last 7 years and have found that it supplies all of our AP/PR and GL needs. We use it as a retail establishment and Enterprise connects and transfers with our Energy industry-related software seamlessly. I also use it for a non-profit Foundation outside of the workplace.

Quickbooks is great

Carolyn Butler | Managing Partner, Coyote Partnership No matter which edition of QuickBooks the size of your business requires, it is an easy to use program with all the features one needs. I have used QuickBooks for years starting with the original then Pro and finally Enterprise. Simplicity of use is the key factor, but that is coupled with very thorough accounting.

Great for 25 years!

Mike T | Partner/ GM, Taft Construction Company We have used progressively better and newer versions of QuickBooks since 1991 and have never lost any data or had a single glitch requiring a reinstall or rescue from our backup file. We use Enterprise 2016 for a partnership 1065 filed construction business and an S-Corp 1120 electrical business and it works seamlessly on each division. Overall, a great product.

Denise Gallaher | Executive Assistant, HFE International Well, maybe one regret. that we didn’t buy it sooner! Fantastic features that have streamlined the operation and are propelling us out of start up mode. Sheer brilliance. The only thing better than the Enterprise edition is the client care you get with it.

Enterprise 2016 Silver Edition

Not only do we balance every month, but we are able to see how much money we have coming in and going out at any given time. • Monitor private network, monitor internal network: Site24x7 #website #monitoring, #free #website

    #

Monitor your Internal Network via On-Premise Poller

    Site24x7’s On-Premise Poller

Today’s workforce uses both internet and intranet applications to get work done. The Site24x7 On-Premise Poller complements Site24x7’s global monitoring network of servers by allowing you to install a lightweight, stateless, auto-updating software component in your internal network or private clouds and monitor your mission critical resources along with internet facing websites. It also helps you monitor ping network devices, servers, application servers, database servers, intranet portals, ERP systems, payroll applications and ensure other custom applications are up and performing optimally.

In short, it can help you monitor resources behind the firewall and ensure that your VMware environment runs at peak performance every time. Site24x7 vCenter monitoring can discover your entire VMware virtual infrastructure through the vCenter server allowing you to discover virtual resources and categorize them into components such as Data Center, Cluster, ESX/ESXi hosts and more.

    What can it do?

Site24x7 On-Premise Poller can help you monitor ping network devices, servers, application servers, database servers, intranet portals, ERP systems, payroll applications and ensure other custom applications are up and performing optimally. In short, it can help you monitor resources behind the firewall.

This is possible by support for network protocols and services like HTTPS, SMTP, POP, IMAP, DNS, Port and Ping. Additionally, its flexible architecture can also help you monitor the end user experience of your web applications as experienced by employees at your branch office. This capability is complementary to the agent based server monitoring and public cloud monitoring capabilities of Site24x7.

    How does it work?

The On-Premise Poller is a lightweight, stateless, auto-updating software component that you download and install in your internal network.

This software then helps you monitor internal resources and pushes performance and uptime information to Site24x7 using a cloud friendly architecture (one way HTTPS). No holes in the firewall!

It can also be installed in various branch offices and used to monitor user experience from that location. Since the installed software report to the central Site24x7 servers, you can view consolidated dashboards and reports.

    Why should I try it?

    • Monitor your public and private clouds with Site24x7
    • Add your own monitoring location in addition to the 60+ monitoring locations already supported by Site24x7
    • Be notified instantly about performance or downtime issues via SMS, Email, Push Notifications, Twitter and RSS Feeds
    • Easy to setup and maintain
    • Cloud friendly architecture ensures security of internal resources
    • Enhance the productivity of your Operations and IT teams using a simple to deploy software option
    • Free service to ensure your on-premise monitoring products are working effectively

    How do I get started?

Spotify : Every road trip needs good jams and lots of them! Although the free version of this service is awesome, it’ll definitely be worth your money to upgrade to premium for your road trip. For just $9.99 a month you have access to any song at anytime … even when you re offline.

8 Tools to Help You Travel Forever and Live Rent Free

Subscribe to Our Under the Radar Newsletter

Your information will *never* be shared or sold to a 3rd party. Promise.

So you ve decided to do it. You have a friend or family member who can store your belongings for an undetermined period of time, you ve tied up loose ends, and your bags are packed. It s time to start traveling long term!

But now what? You have a few family members and distant friends who have offered up a couch if you re in their neck of the woods, but surely they won t appreciate your arrival on their doorstep with no planned departure date in sight.

How then, do you travel long term and not run out of money? Hotels are expensive over time, and finding rental accommodation in every city you visit is impractical. Heck — you don’t even want to pay rent at all! Hostels are a great option as they are much cheaper and it’s a great place to meet others on the road.

Here are eight handy resources to help you get started on your long term travel adventure:

    Caretaker s Gazette

By joining this service (annual membership is approximately US$30), you will gain access to a classified system of people looking for caretakers in exchange for rent-free living. The opportunities vary widely in scope from ranch hands, to organic farm workers, campground hosting, motel management, nursing for the elderly, to just plain house sitting. Locales for your next potential gig could be anywhere in the world, from numerous U.S. locations, to Australia, to Europe and even Micronesia.

Some are paying opportunities, while others are simply work-trade arrangements for accommodation. Others yet will supply an additional stipend depending on your experience and the work entailed.

This is what TIME Magazine had to say about the Caretaker s Gazette.

    Woofing

WWOOF is an acronym for a number of different phrases, the most apt of which in my mind is World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms . It is an international organization (located in over 70 countries) of organic farms, gardens, businesses, ranches, (you name it) where you can exchange your services for accommodations, food, and training.

Required services include basic garden and farm maintenance, as well as cooking, teaching, caring for children, and handy work. There is usually some work suitable for anybody willing to adopt this lifestyle.

Whilst surfing Wwoofing opportunities, you will likely also find links to volunteer organizations, and other similar work exchange opportunities. It s a great way to gain valuable experience, friendships, and to cover your living expenses in a constructive manner.

Most countries require a subscription to gain access to their full listings and contact information of the hosts, and the subscription prices vary from area to area but are not over-priced for the value received.

    House Carers

If you are happy to spend your vacation house-sitting for somebody else, you may find the right opportunity here. You will find lists upon lists of people requesting house sitters for periods of time from a few days to a few months, anywhere in the world. In many cases there are a few hoops to jump through in order to gain the opportunity with liability and bonding issues, and already living or traveling in the same country carries an added advantage.

You can choose from the limited free membership options or the full US$45 one year membership, depending on your needs.

    Organic Volunteers

Much like Caretaker s Gazette and woofing, you will find many worldwide opportunities to proverbially pick blueberries for a living . The prospects aren t limited to organic farms though; you will find hostel management jobs, artist retreat internships, in addition to various agricultural and permaculture settings.

For US$20/year, membership will help you gain access to many great listings and a user-friendly system of contacting hosts and searching for opportunities.

    Couch Surfing

Couch Surfers are a network of people who are willing to open up their homes and hearts to frugal travelers, as well as be those travelers when they are not hosting guests. The site prides itself on referrals and having only high quality members, and has a comprehensive program in place to ensure the safety of both traveler and host. But as with any chance to stay at a stranger’s place for free, a prudent amount of caution should be exercised.

    Global Freeloaders

Similar to Couch Surfing, Global Freeloaders is a cultural exchange program for hosts and travelers. Registration is free, but members are required to be able to host as well as travel, so unless you expect to be able to offer up your digs as a host within six months of signing up, you are politely requested to wait.

    Servas

This is the original Couch Surfers and Global Freeloaders. Servas (meaning serve in Esperanto), is a non-profit non-denominational non-ethnic organization of good-will and cultural exchanges. It s been around for at least 50 years, and is recognized by the United Nations. In addition to being a network to connect people and places, volunteers around the world work in relief camps and advocate for peace through various projects.

Hosts offer their homes and dinner tables for two nights (or more, at the discretion of the host) to travelers who contact them and who meet with their approval. Travelers must go through an exhaustive process which includes an in-person interview before being accepted to the program, as a way of screening for quality candidates.

Once travelers are interviewed and accepted into the program, they are given printed lists or booklets of the hosts in their destination country (Servas is moving towards an online platform, but is not there yet). There are also membership fees which vary from country to country.

    Hospitality Club

Free to join and internet-based, it appears to be the Servas of the online world. It is kept safe through a series of passport checks and online feedback systems with checks and balances.

These are just a few opportunities in the world of long-term travel, as you will discover with a little research. I don t vouch for any of the services or programs, and a healthy amount of caution should always be exercised when accepting hospitality from strangers. However I think Servas says it best when they say: We are all friends. We just haven t met yet!

5 Tools for Finding Cheap Last-Minute Flights – US News #travel

    #best cheap flights
    #

When an emergency (or spontaneity) strikes, it can pay off to befriend these tools.

We’ve all faced this situation: An emergency comes up. Perhaps someone in the family died or is very sick, or maybe you suddenly have a week off and want to visit an old friend or take a vacation. You want to leave today or tomorrow … but you don’t have a plane ticket in hand. What do you do?

All hope is not lost. There are a number of really smart ways to find a ticket that meets your needs, often at a great price.

One big caveat: You must be at least a little bit flexible. When you’re looking for discounted flights at the last minute, you’re going to have to accept that the flight might be late at night or really early in the morning – or have a five-hour layover in East Overshoe.

Still, last-minute flights at a discount can be real lifesavers. Here are five tools to help you find them.

Independent searches. It’s no secret there are many websites designed to help you simultaneously search a bunch of airlines for the best rates on flights, and that’s always a good place to start if you’re looking for last-minute tickets. Sites like Orbitz, Expedia, Priceline and many others provide airline comparison shopping at your fingertips.

However, it’s worth noting that such comparison sites won’t always show you great discounts on last-minute flights. While the tickets might be available on those sites, there are several paths to bigger discounts.

Airline miles. The best use for your frequent-flier miles is to keep them until you’re actually facing an emergency, then cash them in. Many people don’t do this – they cash in their miles for planned trips, then find themselves really stuck when they need a last-minute flight.

If you discover you need a last-minute flight, contact the airline to see if you can use your miles to cover the flight. Airlines are surprisingly good at filling last-minute seats on flights with customers using frequent-flier miles.

Phone calls. Even if you don’t have frequent-flier miles, it’s still a good idea to simply call the airlines and see what they can do to help. If you are in a genuine emergency situation, airlines will often help you find a way to get home.

Many airlines, such as Delta, have special bereavement fees as well, which can help blunt the financial sting of an emergency flight home. They’ll also work to find you a slot on a flight that will get you to your destination as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Vacation packages. These often come coupled with airline flights that have already been purchased by the travel agency. Late-in-the-game-vacation-package sellers are often eager to get some return for their packages, so they’ll sometimes sell them at a discounted rate.

If you can find a travel agency or other group selling vacation packages to your destination, contact them directly to inquire about last-minute deals. Not only could this take care of both your flight and housing all at once, but it could also save you a surprising amount of money.

Some families even use this strategy to plan their vacations. They’ll call a travel agency and ask what kind of last-minute packages agents are trying to get rid of at a steep discount. That then becomes their family vacation.

Airline newsletters. A final tactic is to subscribe to airline newsletters, something you can do even if you’re not looking for an emergency flight at this moment.

Airline newsletters are issued very frequently – sometimes even multiple times per day. These newsletters often show exceptional discounts on a handful of flights that, for some reason or another, are really undersold that day. Airlines want to send full flights; it’s far better for them to sell a cheap last-minute ticket than to allow planes to take off with empty seats. So, they often use their newsletters to share information about such last-minute flights.

Subscribe to some of these email newsletters, particularly for airlines associated with the airports that are most convenient for you. You might just discover a big discount for a flight right at the moment you need it.

Inexpensive last-minute flights are out there. You just have to know where to look and what tools to use to find them.
