Online Course: Film Appreciation 101 – CEU Certificate #online #film #classes,

Online Class: Film Appreciation

Course Description

‘Film Appreciation for Modern Audiences’ is intended as a journey through the world of film. It is a sampling of the thought and accumulated critical opinion that forms the basis of the modern stature of 100 years of film-making–as art or culturally important dramatic work.

If you love film, then this course will help you learn more about film analysis, film reviews and discussions, period genres and movements in film style, and more. It will provide you an informed opinion that will hopefully make your enjoyment of the film medium deeper.

This course may be useful for professionals who need to be informed and conversant about the film-industry; for the layman who wants to know as much as he/she can about the world of film for personal enjoyment; or for the student, hoping to become familiar with the ‘lay-of-the-land’ for film-criticism.

Lessons include discussions on the following:

  • How you can get real enjoyment from the films you watch, and why you should care
  • Early film-history
  • The process of film-making and how it relates to understanding the films you watch
  • A look at 100 years of film-styles, genres and movements
  • A discussion of film-psychology, and some fascinating aspects of the perception of films
  • A review of ‘films to watch’, taken in 20-year periods starting in 1900, and moving through 2007, featuring all the classics from each era
  • General ideas about film and art-theory as a consumer habit
  • Film composers to know
  • Film directors to know
  • How to get your twenty-dollar’s worth at the movie-theater
  • New ways to enjoy film and new audience technologies
  • And much more

Lesson 1: The Value of Film Viewing

This lesson asks the question, “Why do we enjoy watching movies?”

  • Lesson 2: Early Film History

This lesson describes the evolution of filmmaking, the inventors, and early actors.

  • Lesson 3: The Filmmaking Process

This lesson describes the different phases of the filmmaking process.

  • Lesson 4: 100 Years of Film Styles and Movements

This lesson describes how technology, culture, and current events affect movie making.

This lesson explores the popular, classic, and well-made pictures of this era.

  • Lesson 7: Films to Watch 1960 — 2007

With new technology, popular movies are changing. Here are some of the most popular.

  • Lesson 8: General Ideas on Art Theory as a Consumer Habit

This lesson focuses on questions of art theory. What makes movies “art” or “classic?” What makes a picture “good” or “bad?”

  • Lesson 9: Film Composers to Know

This lesson lists many of the most popular movie composers, and some of their greatest hits.

  • Lesson 10: Film Directors to Know

This lesson lists influential film directors of the past and the present.

  • Lesson 11: How to Get Your Money’s Worth at the Movies

This lesson examines how box office receipts are influenced by the reviews, and by consumer likes and dislikes.

  • Lesson 12: New Ways to Enjoy Film, Technology, and the Future

This lesson examines some of the new technology available for watching movies.

  • Lesson 13: Personal Enrichment as a Film Audience Consumer

    More bang for your buck

I was not impressed or disgusted enough to leave a comment on this film. So why am I typing now? I saw this was in the bottom 100 here on IMDB. It wasn’t that bad. Actually I enjoyed it, but I was in the mood to not think and just watch stuff blow up (having a bad day). That’s what I got. Lots and lots of explosions, and fun action, there were more explosions then dialouge. There is some plot here, but don’t watch this for realism or story. It’s a cartoon, a video game, just mindless action and entertainment, and thats why its worth seeing and doesn’t belong on the bottom 100.

It doesn’t come close to being a must see action flick (see the first 2 Lethal Weapons, Die Hard, Escape from New York or dozens of others), but it’s not that bad.

    Invincible, imaginative, inspiring

Doctor Who just works. However you watch it, as a fan or casual viewer, there is something there for you; and if there s not, well, try a different era. It helps that it s got 52 years currently under its belt, and so there is and has been for a long time, an element of nostalgia to the show– recurring villains, references, companions or places/planets that get revisited just to please the people who ve been watching long enough. But that s not all there is to it: because every year, there s some kind of hidden gem of an episode that s a shining example of great television, along with the scary, funny, tense episodes we have all come to expect from this show. One of its strongest merits is its constant adaptability. There are different writers almost every week, different companions every other series, different doctors, different locations, directors, genres, threats and ideas. For every one abysmal episode (and there are a few of them), there are some absolutely stunning ones too. I d recommend Heaven Sent, Bad Wolf/Parting of the Ways, The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances, Blink, The Pandorica Opens, A Good Man Goes to War, Asylum of the Daleks, Flatline, and The Day of the Doctor. It s a show that never dies. Of course, it will get cancelled at some point, maybe, just as it did before; and then it will live on. It will get picked up again. TV just isn t the same without it.

If you re new, it s best to start with some classic stand-alone stories to get into them. Maybe try a few from each series to work out who your favourite Doctor/companion combination are. Smith and Jones is a lovely episode to start with (it s where I started)–the season 3 opener, with a new, companion, a reintroduction to the Tenth Doctor, and a wholly entertaining episode. Other great places to start are Rose (although there s a lot of catching up to do), The Eleventh Hour (a completely brand new start– perfect if you know absolutely nothing about anything in the show), and Deep Breath (an introduction to the current Doctor, with a few entertaining characters who have already been in the show before). Generally, starting with a Series 1-4 episode will be much easier, with simpler stories, a new companion/Doctor each series, and some enjoyable, if upsetting, season finales. Series 6-9 are harder to start at, with characters carried over from previous seasons, and plot lines and mysteries also carried on with. The individual episodes within the seasons, however, need no foreknowledge at all: for Season 6, be sure to try The Doctor s Wife and The Girl Who Waited; Season 7, try Asylum of the Daleks, Dinosaurs on a Spaceship and The Bells of St John; Season 8, try Flatline, Listen, or Kill the Moon; and Season 9, try The Girl Who Died/The Woman Who Lived, The Zygon Invasion/Inversion; and Heaven Sent (which is absolutely incredible). It s a lot of episodes, which for some seems too much. For me, however, it s never enough.

    Storyline

It is Christmas time and the McCallister family is preparing for a vacation in Paris, France. But the youngest in the family named Kevin got into a scuffle with his older brother Buzz and was sent to his room which is on the third floor of his house. Then, the next morning, while the rest of the family was in a rush to make it to the airport on time, they completely forgot about Kevin who now has the house all to himself. Being home alone was fun for Kevin, having a pizza all to himself, jumping on his parents’ bed, and making a mess. Then, Kevin discovers about two burglars, Harry and Marv, about to rob his house on Christmas Eve. Kevin acts quickly by wiring his own house with makeshift booby traps to stop the burglars and to bring them to justice. Written by John Wiggins

    Surreal and hilarious

Home Alone is one of the most popular movies from the early 90 s. Its success was phenomenal and it also made Macaulay Culkin a superstar.

The plot is quite original and surreal: a child who is home alone and capable of making the bandits s lives miserable? Sure, it s an impossible story, but who cares? Far from being a perfect movie, it is however okay and fun to watch, entertaining and contains slapstick humor too although I don t like some of the language used.

Our story takes place in Chicago at Christmas time, which makes this a Christmas film. In fact, the movie has lots of Christmas decorations, lights, snow and many other details which create the feeling and magic so characteristic of Christmas. To accent the Christmas atmosphere even more, there are a cup of nice Christmas carols such as Rockin Around the Christmas Tree (performed by Brenda Lee), You re a mean one, Mr. Grinch , White Christmas , Carol of the Bells , Oh Holly Night and Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas and some brilliant instrumental musics.

Kevin McCallister is the hero of the story. He s not just any kid, he s a very smart one. He also knows all about the intentions of the wet bandits Harry and Marv and prepares them lots of unexpected surprises . Their lives won t be easy with Kevin defending his house. Sure, they are the villains and as such they get what they deserve, but they do suffer a lot too. We almost feel sorry for them.

The wet bandits were nicknamed like that by Marv because their calling card (according to him) was to let the water running in every houses they robbed. That said, both wet bandits are hilarious. Harry is more cranky, while Marv is the most stupid of the two (although both are stupid) and maybe that s why people tend to sympathize more with him. Marv s stupidity also makes him the funniest of the two. Marv is the typical tall and clumsy guy with no brain, a bit like Averell Dalton from the Lucky Luke comics.

The movie has lots of funny moments. The funniest for me is when Harry and Marv pretend to be Santa Claus and his elf and the way Harry speaks in that scene, followed by the even funnier part when Kevin fires at Harry s pants. Whenever Kevin fools the bandits in a try to make them believe the whole family is at home when Kevin is all alone is funny too. For some reason, I also find funny whenever Kevin screams maniacally (particularly when he says he s not afraid anymore and sees Old Marley and screams out loud.

The scenes which Kevin fools and scares the Little Nero s Pizza boy and Marv with the gangster film Angels with Filthy Souls are hilarious, but in the case of the Pizza boy it is unfair for him. There was no need to scare the hell out of him – he was just delivering pizza and wasn t after Kevin.

Old Marley is an interesting character. I always felt sorry for him because of the lies Buzz tells about him. And the man never did anything bad to anyone. Buzz is a jerk and Uncle Frank is even worse. Buzz is mean for Kevin and Uncle Frank openly dislikes Kevin. When Uncle Frank tells Kevin Look what you did, you little jerk! , Kevin s parents should tell him something like Frank, stay out of this and shut up! .

The church is magnificent. It s one of the biggest and most beautiful churches I ve ever seen in a movie.

Macaulay Culkin is terrific as the clever kid Kevin McCallister. Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern are awesome as the wet bandits and Roberts Blossom is great as the character Old Marley. It s also delightful to see John Candy as Gus Polinski, the Polka King of the Midwest .

I did NOT get what I paid for.  Here is the story.

I purchased a 1956 Shasta 1500 from Tin Inn about a year ago, and was told that was advertised as being in amazing condition. IT had the original stove, gas lamp, ice box cabinets in decent condition, etc.  I paid $4000 for it.  In the world of vintage trailers this amount generally is reserved for trailers that have have been restored with rot removed, drip rails and windows removed and reset with new butyl tape.  They still generally have work to be done on them (upholstery, perhaps a broken window to be fixed, exterior paint, etc. ). I was told this trailer had all systems working, no leaks and that all old water damaged panels would be replaced and a new floor and window coverings would be put in before pick up. I was not able to do the pickup.  When my good friend arrived to do the pick up he inspected it and believed it looked as promised.  I arrived home in Oakland California safely and seemingly as promised.  However the first rainstorm revealed leaks in the newly installed roof vent, and in all four corners of the trailer.  Further inspection revealed that new panels had been placed over older rotten panels over rotted framing that was falling apart.  Extensive damage had been concealed.  When I contacted the business I was assured that it hadn t had any leaks and that the seals must have broken in transit.  She offered to have the workman come down and fix it..since he d be traveling to the bay area soon–no thanks. apologized for his inexperience.  I declined this offer, why would I want the person who messed it up to fix it.  Instead she gave me a $300 credit saying that is probably what the repairs would cost.   I wasn t satisfied, but figured this was going nowhere.

I took it upon myself to restore this trailer.  This involved replacing the skin front and back, building new floor front and back, and replacing rotted framing on sides, front and back, new insulation, new birch paneling. pulling, polishing and resetting all the windows and drip rail.  These repairs cost me more than $1,000 to complete using mostly my own labor, to bring it back to the condition is was supposed to have been in when I purchased it.  I added more upgrades and spend countless hours and another $1500 getting her to the point she is now.  This is documented in my blog aguadream.blogspot.com

Never buy a trailer that is promoted as ready to camp no leaks no rot from a distance unless you get full documentation of all work done.  And even then try to get someone who knows what to look for do a full and complete inspection.  If the person you are buying from is a dealer insist on references from at least several buyers who have had their trailers for several months.  A dealer who is proud of their work will be happy to provide oodles of restoration pictures and references.  The going rate for project trailers is 1000 to 1500 in the condition mine was actually in, don t pay more unless you have proof of the work done — which should include at least pictures showing the torn down condition of the trailer and step by step rebuild.  Insist that drip rails and windows be seated in new butyl tape and that NO silicone is used to caulk.   Insist on a complete list of repairs.  If the seller can t produce walk away and keep looking.

There are lots of reputable vintage trailer restorers out there.  Do your homework on facebook groups and other internet resources, go to vintage rallies and talk to owners.  Get a pro to go look at potential trailers with you.  Vintage trailer buffs in your area will likely be happy to oblige.

Demonstrating decency and restraint far beyond what his subject is deserving of, Oliver Stone demonstrates rare wisdom and the hindsight of someone trying to understand this period of history from a standpoint of decades in the future. He creates a film that swings wildly between comedy and tragedy, tragi-comedy and comic tragedy in his portrait of a man who though born to privilege, needs to have greatness thrust upon him-and is not up to the task he seeks. It is. and I do not use this term lightly: Shakespearean.

Josh Brolin s Oscar-worthy performance manages two amazing feats: 1) He makes you forgot you are watching Josh Brolin as he portrays W. over a 40-year period and 2) He makes even a left-leaner like myself forget how much one may hate George W. Bush. I just wanted to yell at the screen ala Rocky Horror, You seem to be a nice guy who enjoys people. stay with baseball. All of the supporting cast of characters in the Bush Dynasty are handled with dignity and respect (particularly James Cromwell as Bush the First), and Stone is decent enough to leave the Bush Twins out of it. Jeffrey Wright might be up for a Best Supporting Actor nod for his thoughtful and restrained portrayal of Colin Powell.

I am racking my brain trying to remember when recent history was made into such a vital film; this is the antithesis to a quickie made-for-TV movie about Amy Fischer and the like.

    rehashed storyline creatively told

In reality, there are a finite amount of interesting story lines to tell. What makes one movie telling the same storyline more worthwhile to see is a combination of creative expression, in depth character development, superb acting, exquisite photography, and believability, or the ability to persuade the moviegoer to suspend disbelief.

How many times have we been exposed to a retelling of Shirley Temple’s Heidi, where a young non-related child falls into the life of an old curmudgeon, and teaches that curmudgeon to enjoy life and/or develop morals and values? Too many times for me, so I was reluctant to see this film. It would have been a shame had I not.

There are many creative twists and turns along the way to keep the suspense level up in this film. The photography in Rio is OK, but once out in the Brazilian countryside, it is fantastic. At the end of the film, there is little doubt but that the way this story turns out is how it would have had to turn out. The character development of Josue is a little weak, but that of Dora is superb. And you will see a lot of films before you will see an acting performance like Fernanda Montenegro’s as Dora again.

This movie thankfully is not overly sentimental, that would get in the way of the story, it is just a great film to watch and enjoy. 9 of 10.

    10 причин моей ненависти (1999 )

    Storyline

Adapted from William Shakespeare’s play “The Taming of the Shrew,” 10 Things I Hate About You starts off with Cameron, new student at Padua High, sitting in the office of the quirky guidance counselor Ms. Perky. He is then shown around the school by Michael, who will become his best friend. During his tour is when Cameron first sees Bianca Stratford, a beautiful sophomore with one problem: she isn’t allowed to date. And neither is her “shrew” sister, Katarina, a senior who loves indie rock and feminist prose and hates conformity. But Kat and Bianca’s father alters his house rule: now, Bianca can date. as long as Kat has a date, too. Now, in order for Cameron to date Bianca, he has to find someone to date Kat. So Michael helps him enlist the help of pretty-boy/jerk/model Joey Donner, tricking him into thinking that *he* will get to take Bianca out if he pays someone to take out Kat. One of the best teen movies of all time.

I can’t say enough good things about this movie. I do remember the first time I saw it, coming away thinking that I wanted to be just like Julia Stiles’ character in it, though. She was so cool and did such an excellent job in her role, that still to this day I consider her to be the coolest teen in any ‘teen movie’.

Basic Plot: Cameron (Levitt), a new student at Pagua high school, falls in love with a sophomore named Bianca Stradford (Oleynik).

However, Bianca has a flirtatious crush on the most popular senior at school named, Joey (Keegan). Cameron’s sidekick Michael (Krumholtz)tells him, that Bianca is looking for someone to help her with French and Cameron decides that’s how he’ll ask her out on a date.

Kat Stradford (Stiles) is Bianca’s sister. Totally opposite of Bianca, she is anti-social and is the most feminist high school senior you could ever meet. Against boys, dances, and anything having to do with prepiness and silly fun, she swears off dating and finds herself being accepted to Sarah Lawrence a college across the country in hopes to get away from her father and the city she lives in.

Bianca desperately wanting to date, is told by her father (Miller) that she will be allowed to date when her sister Kat does. Desperate and not knowing how to get her sister to ‘date for her’, ends up asking Cameron, her new French tutor, to help her with her predicament. Enter Patrick (Ledger). An outcast and rumored to have sold his kidneys on the black market for a new set of speakers, also attends Padgua high, and is unsuspecting of what will happen soon in his future.

Cameron and Micheal decide that in order to make this work, they need a backer. Someone who’s stupid, but has money. So they go to Joey, telling him that they know he likes Bianca, and they need him to pay Patrick a tidy sum, to have him date Kat, in order for him to date Bianca. What Joey doesn’t know, is that Cameron secretly plans to date Bianca, while he pays Patrick to take out Kat.

It may sound like a very confusing movie. But it is so funny, cleverly written, and not entirely true of American teenage culture, but pretty close. The acting is wonderful and in my opinion nothing in the movie would have worked as well, without the people who played their characters. As I said before I think that Stiles’ portration of Kat Stradford was right on, and no one could have done it better. Her best role, more than certainly, and I love this movie so much! I would have to say it’s my favorite teen comedy next to The Breakfast Club. One the best movies, and a great watch!

I give it a 10 out of 10. Go rent it, or better yet go buy it! You won’t regret it!

    Holds 7th Annual Gathering

photo contributed. Necedah built Camp-Inn Travel Trailers can be towed by most passenger cars, mini-vans, or small SUV s

Second largest teardrop get together in the Midwest.  Camp-Inn Travel Trailers of Necedah is holding its 7th Annual gathering at Juneau County Castle Rock Park this weekend.  Owner Cary Winch said, “each year at this time we host a gathering of all Teardrop travel trailers.

This is normally a nice event with 20-25 Teardrops in attendance and 50 or 60-people.  This year, however, it has grown amazingly.  We have 43-Teardrop trailers R.S.V.P. and 115 people.  This will make this the largest Teardrop Travel Trailer gathering in the Midwest with the exception of the international gathering held biannually in Minden, Nebraska.”

The Camp-Inn vintage styling is reminiscent of Teardrop trailers of the 1930’s and 1940’s, but the Necedah built camper trailers include air conditioning, a LP furnace, TV/DVD, stove, sink, sleeping for 2-4, and more.  With uncertain fuel prices, a Camp-Inn Teardrop or Raindrop Trailer can be towed with most passenger cars, mini-vans, or small SUV’s.
