Imaginative traveller

We create imaginative and beautiful hotels.

Blakes London is one of the most enduring and enjoyable hotels in the world. Visionary and innovative, it’s the blueprint for fashionable small hotels worldwide.

Blakes Amsterdam is a work of art, where exquisite Dutch traditional architecture has been given warmth, colour and spice from the golden age of the Dutch East India Company.

The Hempel, London’s first minimalist hotel, has been described as “a space of wisdom at the heart of life itself”.

New hotels opening in 2012 include the Grosvenor House Apartments on Park Lane; two brand new boutique business hotels for the La Suite Group in London. Set in the Brazilian rainforest, Warapuru is a stunning new piece of contemporary architecture and luxury hotel design. An awe-inspiring monolithic work of minimalist grandeur, opens in 2015 along with The Garcha Santiago, Chile, The Baccarat Hotel Morocco and another signature property in Singapore.

Where to eat in Amsterdam, Netherlands (Cond – Nast Traveller), imaginative

Guide to Amsterdam

Where To Eat

BLAUW AAN DE WAL

Oudezijds Achterburgwal 99, 1012 DD Amsterdam (00 31 20 330 2257). The menu changes daily, offering such delights as lamb’s shank so tender you could eat it with a spoon, given a little kick with an anchovy sauce and offset with fresh artichoke hearts. The owner’s passion for Austrian wines results in some pleasing surprises.

Nassaukade 366, 1054 AB Amsterdam (00 31 20 489 7039; www.restaurantbluepepper.com). An intimate, chef-driven restaurant specialising in Indonesian cuisine. Chef Sonja Pereira likes to plate your food herself and takes a contemporary approach to creating authentic flavours. Try the salad of roasted duck, flavoured with the subtle burn of green turmeric.

Noordermarkt 7, 1015 MV Amsterdam (00 31 20 624 3899; www.restaurantbordewijk.nl). This minimalist, canal-side restaurant is popular with locals who go for the excellent dishes served up by chef Wil Demandt. Highlights include roasted quail and watercress salad, Provençale-style rabbit with red onion confit and seafood risotto perfumed with bergamot lemon.

Nes 67, 1012 KD Amsterdam (00 31 20 428 2222; www.brasserieharkema.nl). Centrally located with a slick, modern interior, open kitchen, great staff and a very fashionable bar.

Van Baerlestraat 96, 1071 BB Amsterdam (00 31 20 675 1866; www.brasseriekeyzer.nl). If Amsterdam can claim a star chef it’s Ron Blaauw, famous for his eponymous restaurant in suburban Ouderkerk aan de Amstel and for the recently opened Brasserie Keyzer. Classic smoked eel from the northern seaside town of Volendam doesn’t need much tweaking, but the chef’s white asparagus soup is as foamy as a cappuccino and his lobster salad with quail eggs justifies its velvet-rope price.

Watertorenplein 6, 1051 PA Amsterdam (00 31 20 682 2666/667; www.cradam.nl). An attractive ten minute cycle ride from the city centre, this industrial monument once pumped water from the coast’s dunes and now pumps out well-priced French dishes. The high ceiling and large windows create a light and breezy atmosphere. It’s an ideal destination for a relaxed breakfast or lunch.

Prinsengracht 377, 1016 HL Amsterdam (00 31 20 624 6270; www.goodfoodgroup.nl). A slightly upmarket take on the traditional brown café, this relaxed but busy place serves good modern Dutch cooking: herring salad, steak with truffle sauce, salmon with beetroot and saffron dressing. You can also dine outside on a barge moored on the canal.

Singel 426, 1017 AV Amsterdam (00 31 20 624 5093; www.casadidavid.com). Italian restaurant with a long-standing clientele. Pizzas are cooked in wood-fired ovens, and the pasta is hand-made and fresh. Ask for one of the tables by the window. Highly recommended.

Leliegracht 46,1015 DH Amsterdam (00 31 20 625 0807; www.restaurantchristophe.nl ). Although Christophe still bears the name of its original Michelin-starred owner, the restaurant, on a quiet and beautiful canal, is now under new ownership. The menu still draws inspiration from the olive-oil-and-basil flavours of southern France with influences from North Africa.

Lijnbaansgracht 236, 1017 PH Amsterdam (00 31 20 623 6615; www.cinecenter.nl). In this soothing, minimalist bar setting, you might even forget to buy a ticket for its first-run art house films.

Bloemgracht 47, 1016 KD Amsterdam (00 31 20 620 2088). An elegant setting offering a selection of fondues, some of which are more unusual than others. Dim sum fondue, anyone?

Easy Traveller designs and manufactures a wide variety of state of the art Horse Floats, Goosenecks and Trailers including straight load AND angle load floats. Made totally in Australia!

Our patented Anti-Scramble range – (JR Easy Traveller) is built for the safety comfort of your Horse. We provide you with the best quality, safest, stress free equine transportation on the market, incorporating patented sloping walls, adjustable chest and rump bars and wider tailgate. All these features can relax your horse and help it to arrive fresh and perform better at events. You can choose from a large variety of great optional extras to suit your needs as well.

Our range starts with the extended 2HSL, the JR Winton and continues onto our most popular 2HSL, the JR Longreach which has an extra 32.5cm in length. The Winton and the Longreach uniquely have flared sides for horses, giving them extra leg room to get their balance and stabilise during travel. As well as horizontally adjustable chest bars, they feel safer and travel better. Loading is also safer with a wider tailgate.

For larger and stockier horses, the JR Condamine has a spacious feel and is a longer and wider bodied float with anti-scramble tack bins giving extra width for horses to stabilise their legs during transit. Master horseman John Chatterton and his mate Robert designed the first JR and built it in 1993 to prevent their horses scrambling and falling.

The ET Tamworth, our 3-4 horse angle load is a top quality float that can be built to your requirements. Please note, this does not have the safety features the 2 horse straight loads do with their anti-scramble design (see our trailer page).

We custom build personalise your float for you! This is all backed up with great after sales service and re-sale value. Our floats are built to last! If you have any questions at all drop in or call our friendly staff on 07 5546-8727

Shannon Appelcline’s guide to refereeing Mongoose Traveller, and Essay Question . where our readers can share their thoughts on various aspects of Traveller. Critic’s Corner Reviews of Traveller products, for our readers, by our readers. There are three subsections: LinkLooks . where reviews of Traveller-related websites may be found; Other People’s Toys . where we carry reviews of non-Traveller gaming materials of interest to Traveller players; and Off The Table . reviewing fiction that the reviewer feels has a connection to Traveller. Doing It My Way House rules , ruleset mixes, and modifications or extensions to rules. Any version of Traveller is fair game, whether currently in print or not. There are several subsections for different types of rules. In A Store Near You Goods that the player-characters might encounter as available for purchase. Some may be truly useful in a campaign; others are for color . There are currently four subsections: The Gun Shop Personal weapons. Not all of these will necessarily fit the normal definition of gun (e.g. grenades), but all will be weapons that a single person can carry and use. Handle With Care Items of all sorts that may present a hazard to the unwary character. The Promenade Describes the shops that the players might purchase goods in. For campaign color . The Showroom Vehicles of all types, all tech levels, for getting around when a spaceship or starship Just Won’t Do. Information Center This section is for non-game support of Traveller – software listings (and some downloads), pointers to other websites, news about publishers, product listings, and so on. Kurishdam Articles here will be for background color to a campaign, to give the setting depth. Has several subsections: Art and Entertainment Activities and entertainments that are often associated with culture , whether performance art like dance or opera forms, or fine arts such as painting or sculpture. At Home, We Do It Like This Descriptions of interesting local customs and traditions. Games People Play Descriptions of games and sports of all types. The Club Room Describes organizations such as religions, clubs, and lodges. Also used for racial, cultural, and societal profiles, similar to the series of Contact! articles in the original printed Journal of the Travellers’ Aid Society. Lecture Hall and Library Color articles written in a style that might fit well in an encyclopedia, collection of public or university lectures, or other scholarly compilation. The Lab Ship This section is for articles about real-world science, both established and cutting edge , that may be of use for adding verisimilitude to a campaign universe. Not for reprints of commercially published articles; rather, authors should discuss the science and provide some ideas and/or outlines of rules for incorporating the science into a Traveller campaign. Less Dangerous Game This section is for articles about animals that might be encountered in a game. Multimedia Gallery Artwork created by Traveller fans. May include still pictures, movie clips, music, and anything else that can be made available through the World Wide Web. Other Roads Describe your Traveller universe as a setting. Emphasis should be on the differences from the standard setting, and should be at the game level, e.g. allowed technologies, political alignments, different star maps, and so on. Variant rules for play, however, should be submitted for Doing It My Way. Raconteur’s Rest Traveller-based fiction. Can be pure storytelling, or novelization of an actual campaign. There is one subsection, Lost Diaries . where the stories are implied – and left unfinished – by a series of entries in a diary or log. The Shipyard Articles about starships and ship-related topics. Includes ship profiles, deck plans and pictures, and alternative technologies. Up Close and Personal Descriptions of individuals that could be encountered in a campaign, as patrons, opponents, contacts, rivals, allies, and so on.

Taste of India Tour – Imaginative Traveller – India Message Board

Hi WellingtonKiwi,The carriage was divided into compartments with just curtains across to the dividing corridor. We rested more than slept, originally when we joined the train in Agra we were assigned a top and bottom bunk but the gentleman opposite on the lower bunk asked if we d like to change and he went to the upper bunk above me which was very kind. The remaining bunk didn t seem to be taken at first but I think the guard must have let someone have the use of it (probably for a fee!!), and there were constant coming and goings during station stops as different passengers changed out. I suppose at least you can lie down and the linen for the bed wasn t too bad although the padded seat wasn t exactly the height of luxury (not that we expected it to be). The guard kept a good check on the carriage, we took a bicycle lock which we passed through the handles of our bags and onto a hook under our bunks. However our bags weren t that light and it would have been a miracle if anyone could have tried to take them away without being notice. Just be prepared for an experience, if there is an option for a 1 a/c carriage you are in a compartment with a door. Let me know if you want any more information and I ll be glad to supply it.

Responsible travel, Responsible tourism, Eco tourism, Adventure holidays – Imaginative Traveller

    Responsible Travel

    Our Policy

Responsible tourism is at the heart of Imaginative Traveller. For 20 years we have taken customers to places around the world in social and environmentally responsible manner, ensuring everyone involved respects and maintains the natural and often delicate balance of the destination.

As travellers ourselves we are well aware of the impact that tourism can have and whilst economic gain from tourism is often fundamental to a country, it should never be at the expense of its culture or the environment. It is our aim to provide journeys that have minimal negative and maximum positive impact on the places we visit. We do not believe that, as visitors, we should impose our own cultures on others; rather that we should experience foreign cultures and appreciate them for what they are.

We believe giving something back is essential. We therefore work with our customers and the people we visit to ensure the benefits go directly to contribute to local cultures and environmental conservation. This is not only good the communities we visit but it also gives our travellers more enriched adventures.

    What we do

    Supporting and involving local people

    • We recruit and involve local people wherever possible.
    • We support and prefer to work directly with local businesses, services and individuals.
    • Our supplies and equipment are purchased locally wherever possible.
    • We aim to work and treat the traveller, local communities and businesses in a fair and just manner.
    • We aim to work with partners who operate their own local initiatives.
    • Small, family-run establishments make up a high percentage of the accommodation we use.
    • Where it is practical but not intrusive we stay as guests of local families.

    Support ClimateCare

To help fund by donating to ClimateCare projects or to find out more about ClimateCare’s low carbon technology projects visit their website at www.climatecare.org

    The Rainforest Alliance

Imaginative Traveller has recently signed a contract with the Rainforest Alliance to work on responsible tourism practices with our Latin America suppliers.

The Rainforest Alliance is a not-for-profit organisation that works to conserve the environment and promote sustainable and ethical practices in a number of different industries across the World. One of the industries they are working in is tourism throughout Latin America.

They provide training and technical assistance to help local operators and hotels implement best practices and encourage them to seek certification from one of the organisations part of the Sustainable Tourism Certification Network of the Americas.

We have signed up to work with them to encourage and motivate our local suppliers. Some of our local operators are already working with the Rainforest Alliance and in this instance our contract with them is simply reinforcing our commitment to responsible travel and demonstrating that it is of the utmost importance to us. For those operators who have not yet agreed to work with them; they will be contacted and encouraged to work on sustainable tourism practices. The aim is that at least 50% of our local partners will sign up but preferably more! The Rainforest Alliance will then also work through them with local hotels/lodges, effectively greening through the supply chain .

We are very pleased to work with the Rainforest Alliance and further demonstrate our longstanding commitment to sustainable tourism. We hope that this will allow us to do even more in Latin America and help responsible travel become an even more accepted and practiced means of holidaying.

If you would like to know more about Rainforest Alliance please visit their website www.rainforest-alliance.org

    The Travel Foundation

The Travel Foundation are an independent UK charity working to promote

sustainable tourism throughout the travel industry. They aim to encourage

understanding of responsible travel and also work on their own community

    and environmental initiatives worldwide.

Imaginative Traveller is demonstrating our support for the charity by working with them on a number of their worldwide projects. We are currently enlisting the help of our local suppliers and ground handlers in East Africa, Morocco and Sri Lanka to support some of the many initiatives the charity has in place. You will find details of the projects within our tour trip notes.

    GURPS Traveller #planning #a #trip

    #traveller
    #

The universe of Traveller is one of the most fully realized game settings ever created. Adventures take place against the background of a vast, star-spanning empire, with a history dating back over a thousand years. Locales can range from a crowded spaceport to a lonely frontier outpost. Characters can be merchant princes, diplomats, soldiers, politicians, criminals. or all of them at once. Political intrigues, trading schemes, mind-wrenching alien enigmas, mercenary raids, wars. almost anything is possible.

First published by Game Designers’ Workshop in the summer of 1977, Traveller was one of the first science fiction roleplaying games (indeed, it was one of the first RPGs of any sort). Traveller rapidly became the standard against which other SF roleplaying games were judged, and influenced many other designs in many other genres. The game went through several editions over the years, and quite a few changes were incorporated along the way. One of these was the Rebellion, something GDW did to bring conflict and excitement to campaigns that had become dull and mundane.

In the 1116th year of the Imperium, Emperor Strephon was assassinated by a rival, and the Third Imperium split into several factions. This change brought excitement to many campaigns, but other players and referees felt that the universe was exciting enough without an empire-wide civil war. It is for these people that an alternate history has been created, where Strephon, the 43rd Emperor of the Third Imperium, lives and the Rebellion never happened.

This is not to say, however, that all is well with the universe. A story without conflict is about as interesting as a telephone directory. So, expect things to happen in this universe. changes will occur. The undercurrents and discontents that led to the Rebellion are still unresolved. The vast scope of the Traveller background will become available to GURPS players and GMs, without the destruction and dislocation caused by the Rebellion.

There is, however, a second reason for GURPS Traveller . Many of the original books that detailed the history and background of the Third Imperium are long out of print. Now new players and referees can have access to the same information as twenty-year-long grognard/collectors, and their enjoyment of Traveller can only benefit.

    Review: Chris Stapleton, ‘Traveller’

Traveller Courtesy of the artist hide caption

toggle caption Courtesy of the artist

Even the most seemingly organic contemporary country albums — the ones by often-awarded “authentic” artists like Miranda Lambert and Eric Church — can sometimes show evidence of a checklist. Eager to prove both currency and adherence to tradition, these more daring country stars range over predetermined territory, showing familiarity with Southern musical landmarks like the blue hills, the swamp, the honky-tonk and the arena-rock amphitheater. There’s almost always a funny song on these album, and a family-focused tearjerker; there are numerous references to hard liquor and soft-focused rural landscapes. There’s some fast picking and power-chord riffing, and a soulful moment that hits purposeful transcendence. The best artists perform this predictable eclecticism with skill and passion; they do care about, and have fun with, country’s touchstones. That said, a listener can anticipate each required turn, like the compulsory elements in an Olympic skating routine.

On his debut solo album, Traveller. Chris Stapleton has the double axels and triple jumps down, but he delivers each with a remarkable lack of showiness, so that each one feels like much more than an exercise. Partly — mostly, maybe — this is because of his voice, which became one of Nashville’s most beloved in the years he spent leading the bluegrass-based SteelDrivers and singing on albums by everyone from Dierks Bentley to Angaleena Presley to Vince Gill. Stapleton, who was raised in Kentucky, sings with the power of a classic Southern rocker, but modulates his rawness with a great sense of soul phrasing and a seasoned balladeer’s ability to scale down.

This decade’s endless parade of blue-eyed pretenders could learn a lot from the care Stapleton takes incorporating soul elements into a declamatory rocker like “Nobody To Blame” or a smoky love song like “Tennessee Whiskey.” Stapleton turns the latter, previously recorded in laconic versions by both David Allan Coe and George Jones, into an Otis Redding-style burner. His melismatic flights on the verses never feel showy; they flow logically from the previous moments when he’s held back.

“Tennessee Whiskey” is one of two relatively recent country favorites included on Traveller. allowing Stapleton to prove his bona fides with the genre’s songbook. (The other is the charming “Was It 26,” previously recorded by the Charlie Daniels Band, which now reads as gentle advice from the 37-year-old Stapleton to hard-partying young fans of the likes of Luke Bryan.) The other songs are all Stapleton co-writes — he’s as valued as a Music Row songwriter as he is for his umami-providing background vocals. Stapleton takes back the mournful “Whiskey and You” from Tim McGraw in a version that really feels like a bitter hangover.

Elsewhere, Stapleton artfully employs his skills as a songwriting generalist: There’s the Texas dance hall sweetness of “More of You,” a duet with the pitch-perfect harmonizer (and his wife) Morgane Stapleton; the hard rock crash of “Parachute”; the nod to Johnny Cash on “Daddy Doesn’t Pray Anymore” and the hat-tip to Hank Jr. on “Might As Well Get Stoned.” The images of frisky devils, fields full of stars and many empty bottles might not be shockingly original, but they appear within stories that always register as immediate and personal.

Producer Dave Cobb allows Stapleton to lay back or push forward within arrangements that don’t have any gimmicks, only great playing and plenty of space for that big voice to fill. Throughout Traveller. Stapleton presents himself as a true Southern character, a family man who can’t help but cling to his vices and a searcher whose sometimes old-fashioned dreams of home don’t prevent him from wanting to roam the modern world. Has Stapleton lived all of these stories of hard luck and wild times? I hope not, for the sake of his liver and his kids’ college funds. But in the imaginary space where country clichés become the gospel truth, he’s utterly convincing.

Andrew Eames Something Different for the Weekend: 52 Seasonal Breaks for the Imaginative Traveller (Bradt Travel Guide)

    Great value adventure! Would recommend.

I recently returned from a great Nile Safari Trip with Imagiantive Traveller

    Arriving in Cairo

Arrival was great! I was met by a driver who was holding up an Imaginative Traveller sign – he was waiting at the baggage reclaim for us. On arrival there were also another 3 solo female travellers who were joining the tour, all were very friendly in their mid-thirties and I felt like I would bond with them for the week away. Once we had met the driver he accompanied us through visa control – he took our money for visas and got our stamps for us to avoid the queues etc. It was all a very smooth and comfortable process. We then took a small mini-bus for the short transfer to the hotel – which was probably one of the most terrifying moments of my life! If you have never been to Cairo be warned! All the drivers are crazy! A 3 lane motorway suddenly becomes 5 with a donkey and trap mixed up somewhere in between! Were there any driving laws? If so, did anyone obey them? I think I had one hand clinging to the seat and the other hand over my eyes. but needless to say we got to the hotel safely!

We arrived at the hotel at around 2am so we were taken straight to our room – as a solo female traveller I did feel a little intimidated as I had a male porter who took my cases up to my room and then hovered around for a while without leaving but I then realised he was waiting for a tip so gave him a small gratuity and he thanked me and left. About 10 minutes later there was a knock at the door and it was the porter again with a complimentary drink of orange juice! The room was a decent size, clean with en-suite facilities. I awoke at about 5.30am to the call to prayer. Having never been to a Middle Eastern country before I was totally mesmerised by the sound. I really felt like I was a million miles away from home. I couldn’t go back to sleep with excitement of the day ahead – we were off the Pyramids and Egyptian Museum!

After a busy day in Cairo visiting the Pyramids and Museum we caught the overnight train to Luxor where we would join the cruise boat Melodie – exclusive to Imaginative Traveller guests. The overnight train was comfortable, we had a nice supper and the seats folded down into beds. Each cabin was for 2 people but it had a door (with a lock) that could open to the next cabin if you had friends the other side – which we did. We all went to the bar on the train for a quick night cap and then we had a comfortable night’s sleep and awoke at about 6am in Luxor for a very short transfer to the Melodie.

Valley of the Kings – ahead of the crowds!

After an amazing day taking a horse and carriage to Karnak Temple and exploring the bustling bazaars of Luxor we woke early the next morning for a donkey ride to the Valley of the Kings. What an experience! The Nile was so quiet and it appeared that we were the only ones up, taking a quick crossing to the west bank where we were met by our group of friendly donkeys. I was tired with the early start but I was sure this experience would wake me up – and boy, did it do just that! I don’t think I have laughed so much in my life. We travelled for 8 miles on ‘donkey back’. It was as if the donkeys were all racing each other – some of them got angry if another over took. The whole journey was about an hour and we arrived at the Valley of the Kings with very sore bottoms. But the early start and journey was worth it – we were the first group there! The temples were incredible and I could have spent so much longer taking in the markings and the stories behind each of them. By the time we left, the Valley of the Kings was beginning to heat up and the crowds were arriving in their masses on big coaches! Nothing like our experience.

    Nile Cruising

The Melodie was very small in comparison to the other HUGE floating hotels on the Nile but I liked this – it seemed much more intimate and unique. The rooms were clean and a decent size, all with ensuite facilities. My highlight was opening up the curtains and realizing that the other side of the Nile was the Valley of the Kings – what a wonderful sight with the sun beginning to rise. For three days we sailed down the Nile, enjoying the wonderful company of the guests, staff and tour leaders and enjoying the FANTASTIC food and entertainment. We stopped at Kom Ombo and Edfu temples – both amazing experiences, each temple was different and each one told a unique story!

    Aswan, Abu Simbel and Camels

The final highlight was stopping in Aswan. I took an additional excursion which was a camel ride across the Sinai desert past the Simeon Monastery. It was incredible – the trip lasted about three hours. Every camel had its own guide so you felt safe. We saw Nubian villages in the distance and it really felt like we were off the beaten track, experiencing what I had imagined the real Egypt to be like. I then spent the afternoon experiencing the beautiful city of Aswan.

The following day we awoke for a 3am start for a visit to Abu Simbel. We all got on the coach with our pillows for a 3 hour ‘shut-eye’ for the journey. Again, when we arrived, the early start was well worth it as we were the first there – the coffee shops hadn’t even opened! But we were first through the door and the first to experience the amazing wonder of Abu Simbel in peace and quiet. We were back to the boat by lunchtime where we had an amazing lunch and the afternoon free to experience Aswan and get some last minute gifts, or just simply laze on the Melodie with a good book and taking a plunge in the dip pool!

Lots to see, lots to do; here’s how to get around. At the top of the page is an image that is also a link back to this page. Below the image are direct links to every department:

[-NEWS -] Traveller News – is where I post site and game news that I find, like new product releases. It is a popular entry page for the site. The News area also has and Op Ed Page – that’s where the latest guest or internal editorial articles are posted. Do you have something to say about Traveller? Feel free to offer it in the form of an editorial.

Then come the version specific areas:

[-CT -] Classic Traveller – is my favorite version so has the most content.

[-MT -] MegaTraveller – has more good stuff these days

    [-TNE -] The New Era

    [-T4 -] Fourth Edition

    [-GT -] GURPS Traveller

[-T5 -] Traveller 5th Edition – has its own website now!

[-T20 -] d20 Traveller – has nothing, but is looking for articles (hint, hint)

[-TECH -] Technology – is playthings for the rich and infamous. Several people have contributed to this effort, which is a good thing, since I’m not a major gearhead.

[-ART -] Traveller Artwork – has a collection of original artwork from Traveller, some previously published, some not. Also has a nice selection of Imperial Credit Notes!

[-HELP -] Let’s Role! – when you’re ready to play and want to know more click [-HELP -] at the top of any page. That is where you’ll find background info on the game, how-to for Traveller chat, where-to for mailing lists, an active Traveller campaigns listing for around the world and a few more goodies for the newbie and those ready to get more involved in Traveller on the web.

So, now that you know about the basics of getting around my little Class C starport, I’ll repeat my welcome and invite you to not only enjoy, but to get lost for awhile in the far future.

Traveller s Guide: Germany by train

A single Eurostar ticket will now take you as far as Munich. The implications for British travellers are profound, says William Cook

Fast track: high-speed ICE trains form the nation’s backbone Getty

Eurostar is in its 20th year, and at last has started doing something that many travellers would have expected years ago: selling tickets from London to cities in Germany. The tickets include the Eurostar segment to Paris or Brussels and the connecting sector with Deutsche Bahn (German Railways).

The project is starting on a small scale: you have to choose from six German cities. Aachen, Bonn, Cologne and Dusseldorf all start at £49.50 single; Frankfurt from £79.50; and Munich from £97.50. The trip to Munich takes 10 hours from London, but you can reach Aachen in under four.

While Deutsche Bahn has long offered a wide range of destinations with print-at-home tickets, the fact that Eurostar is now selling Germany on its website and by phone is likely to spur a lot more interest in travelling to this fascinating nation by train.

And this is only the beginning. From 2016, Deutsche Bahn will be running direct services to Germany from St Pancras, making a train trip from London to Cologne almost as easy as a journey to Glasgow.

Long term, the political implications are profound. Historically, it’s always been easier for Britons to travel around Britain than it has been for us to go abroad. Even foreign air travel hasn’t changed this much, what with the time and trouble it takes to get to (and through) the bigger British airports. How will it change perceptions – and political persuasions – once Londoners can get to Frankfurt as easily as they can get to Edinburgh? In countries such as the Benelux states, where local trains criss-cross borders, national boundaries now seem almost irrelevant.

Where to go: Germany by train

    Flight Centre Travel Group

Part of the Flight Centre Travel Group of travel brands

As part of the Flight Centre Travel Group of businesses, Corporate Traveller can deliver the most competitive prices on all corporate and leisure travel needs from airfares to accommodation, car rental to insurance.

Flight Centre has been rated one of Canada’s Top 50 Employers to work for in Canada according to the Globe & Mail’s Report on Business Magazine annual rankings and one of BC Business’ Best Places to Work in BC.

    Our Services

If you are a Corporate Traveller client and need assistance, please call the number listed on your itinerary or contact your Dedicated Account Manager .

Corporate Traveller provides you with emergency assistance 24 hours a day, 365 days a year from anywhere in the world, to assist you with any last minute or unexpected changes to your travel plans. You will always reach either your dedicated Account Manager or a member of their team. You will never be passed from department to department or stuck in a call centre queue.

    Expert Travel Management

Corporate business travel by nature is complex. Applying the skills of a dedicated account manager is key to managing often complex itineraries and special services.

While many travel management companies offer on-line booking tools Corporate Traveller continues to make a real difference by providing a dedicated and personalized approach. This ensures both the accuracy and efficiency of your travel bookings each and every time.

    Simplified Booking Fee Structure

A one-time fee per airline ticket, with NO extra service charges for cancellations, hotel or car reservations, after hours service, reporting. Change fees as well as airline imposed charges may apply.

    Reporting

We offer several monthly reports to help track travel spend and maximize your company’s investment.

    Did you know?

    • Hotel stays, typically account for 30 to 50 percent of a total travel budget.
    • Air spend typically represents the bulk of travel expenditures but opportunity for savings do in fact exist.
    • Ground transportation, which includes rail and car rentals does not always receive the same attention as air although it can represent 10 percent or more of a total travel budget.

Bringing a dedicated Account Manager on board ensures an expertly managed travel program.

“One of my least favourite tasks over the past twenty years has been booking business travel. The agents I have dealt with have most often been incompetent, or worse, indifferent towards their client’s needs. Chris is definitely an exception, and that is why I asked him to provide me with your contact details. He is prompt and professional in his response and demeanor, and most importantly gets my instructions correct THE FIRST TIME. Chris understands customer service when few others do, and is an asset to your company. I think he needs to be acknowledged for this.” Gerry Lewandowski

What could be nicer and as an added bonus the trains often take you through countryside and routes you would not otherwise see if you took a different travel option.

    Avignon:

Eurostar Direct Avignon Service this service runs from London St Pancras International. Fares start at 119 for a high speed return journey.

    Classes and Facilities on Trains

Different operators offer different services for their travel classes and can call the classes by different names as well. For a full breakdown of what the different classes are called by the different operators and what those classes include, go to Voyages-Sncf Class of Travel to check out the differences.

If all else fails and you cannot find the train service you are looking for then there is always the man in seat 61. what he doesn’t know about train travel isn’t worth knowing.

    No1 Traveller Lounge

Having booked yet another flight to Thailand next month, I was quite pleased to find an email offering gift vouchers for No1 Traveller Lounges with a glass of Champagne for only £20!

After all the years of travelling, it was only this year that we first discovered, and made use of, the No1 Traveller Lounge at Heathrow.  As members of the virgin atlantic flying club, we were able to purchase access only for £22.50, a saving of £7.50.  In reality though, we saved much more than we would have spent in the airport.  We spent two and a half hours in comfort, with plenty to eat, and we didn t go thirsty.  Whist we didn t have a proper meal , we did enjoy a dish from their small tapas range, and made ourselves a cheese board from the snack counter, which was beautifully paired with a few glasses of wine, as we sat reading complimentary magazines, in a relatively quite, and wonderfully relaxed environment.

Enjoying No1 Traveller Lounge, Heathrow Airport

Having checked that there was a lounge at Gatwick (there is in fact one at each terminal) I have duly purchased access for two, which will be sent as a gift voucher, valid for one year dated the 1st January 2015.    At £20 (saving up to £17.50) and with a glass of champagne too, I can t think of a better way to begin our next adventure (which at the moment looks like it may be Koh Lanta, and another trip to Plaza Athenee. at least to sample their Seafood buffet, which is still on my bucket list )

If your planning a trip soon, or already have flights booked for 2015, have a look at the No1 Traveller website for information on their lounges and if you book by 19th December 2014, you to could be sipping on a glass of champagne, waiting for your flight and looking forward to your next adventure, for only £20!

GIANT CRUISE SHIP ANCHORS ROYAL CARIBBEAN’S PACIFIC EXPANSION PLANS

Royal Caribbean has demonstrated its optimism for the cruising industry in the South Pacific with the recent completion of a major refit of the 311m Voyager of the Seas .

“There’s nowhere else our guests can watch the haka. The unparalleled range of scenery is also unique.”

Corporate Traveller asked Sean for his views on the cruising industry in the Pacific.

You are overseeing Royal Caribbean International’s expansion into its busiest season yet in the Oceania region. What do you think brings people down to this part of the world?

There is such a wide variety of experiences for passengers to enjoy in this region.

The feedback from cruise passengers is that they love coming to New Zealand and Australia because of the local people. New Zealand has a focused tourism industry that is always poised to capitalise on the visits of passengers on luxury cruise ships like those in the Royal Caribbean fleet.

While tourism is very well organised in New Zealand, the country is relatively unspoilt and uncrowded. Visitors can enjoy shopping and hospitality in the main cities, but also enjoy the wide variety of scenery, from mountains to beaches and the beauty of Fiordland, which they see up close when they are cruising in the sounds.

    Director of Business Development
