“The cannonade of fireworks which marked the opening of Expo. may in retrospect turn out to have been one of those rare moments that changed the direction of a nation’s history. This is the greatest thing we have ever done as a nation and surely the modernization of Canada — of its skylines, of its styles, its institutions — will be dated from this occasion and from this fair. The more you see of it, the more you’re overwhelmed by a feeling that if this is possible, that if this little sub-arctic, self-obsessed country of 20,000,000 people can put on this kind of show, then it can do almost anything.”

— Syndicated journalist Peter C. Newman of the Toronto Star, April 28, 1967, opening day at Expo 67.

“Still, Expo is regarded as the best world’s fair ever. Its success changed the world’s view of Canada, and more importantly, it changed the way Canadians viewed themselves. For the first time the country basked in the pride and the glory of its talents and accomplishments. A nation had come of age.”

— CBC reporter Raj Ahluwalia, from his book: “We Interrupt This Program.” Publisher Winding Stair Press, 2002.

“When the lights go out for the last time, when the crowds have left the pavilions and the avenues, a World Exhibition begins a new life. Less glittering but more profound, this new life is nourished in the souls of those who visited the Exhibition, and it will blossom into a legend for generations to come.”

— Pierre Dupuy, Commissioner General of Expo 67. Quoted from “E xpo 67 Montreal Canada”, the large memorial coffee table book. Publisher Toronto: Thomas Nelson, 1968.

The Long Travels of La Corriveau – s Cage – Atlas

The Long Travels of La Corriveau s Cage

For centuries, the ghost of Marie-Josephte Corriveau has been haunting the cultural consciousness of Quebec, Canada. To many, the legend of La Corriveau is a ghost story, of a woman hanged for murder, her corpse put on display as a gruesome warning. But the story of La Corriveau and the gibbet in which she was hanged are based on real historical events, and after over a century away, the actual cage has made its way back home. As a result, Corriveau s legacy has lately been shifting from folk tale to historical tragedy.

Marie-Josephte Corriveau was born in 1733, in what was at the time, a country called New France, which, by the time of her death, was controlled by the British. The British forces were completely unorganized, says Sylvie Toupin, a curator at Quebec s Mus e de la Civilisation, which currently holds Corriveau s infamous gibbet. There were many tensions because it was a new government, and the people weren t happy with what was happening. Ultimately, Corriveau would become a dire symbol of this frustration and disorganization.

At the age of 16, she was married to a local farmer. He died in 1760, leaving her alone with three children to care for. However Corriveau quickly found another husband, marrying Louis tienne Dodier, another farmer from her parish, less than two years after the death of her first husband. But he wasn t long for the world either.

Dodier turned up dead in January of 1763. Corriveau and Dodier s marriage was the talk of the town, and not in a good way. Her father, Joseph Corriveau, had a number of very public fights with Dodier over property and business dealings, and Marie had petitioned, unsuccessfully, to leave her husband, on the grounds that he was physically abusive.

So when Dodier was found dead in their barn, initially thought to have been the result of being kicked in the head by a horse, the rumors about town soon turned the focus of the investigation to murder. Dodier s wounds were reexamined and determined to have been caused by something closer to a pitchfork than horse hooves, and both Joseph and Marie were accused of murdering the man.

After an initial trial before the military, Joseph was found guilty of Dodier s murder and Marie was found guilty of being an accomplice. But when Joseph was sentenced to hang for his crimes, he cracked, telling the court that in fact his daughter had committed the murder, and that he hadn t turned her in only because trying to keep her from the gallows. When questioned about this shocking turn of events, Marie finally admitted to killing Dodier with a hatchet.

Likely embarrassed by the initial wrongful conviction, and possibly influenced by fresh questions about her first husband s death that were now being whispered about by locals, the British authorities in charge of the province at the time held a speedy, cursory second trial. It was a military trial, because they were not equipped to hold a civil trial, says Toupin. They surpassed their given powers because the king in England did not give the final approval. They sentenced Marie not only to hang, but for her body to be gruesomely displayed in a metal gibbet as a warning. She was hanged in April of 1763, and her body was placed on public display for about five weeks in nearby Pointe L vis.

Canada travelsAn illustration of La Corriveau s ghost attacking an unwary traveller. Charles Walter Simpson/Public Domain

They wanted to give an advertisement to the population with this hanging in the cage, says Toupin. It was unusual because this tradition didn t exist anymore in France, but the British still used it, so it was a new thing for us, and for us an important political symbol. It s still in our memory, because what they did was unfair. Corriveau s extreme sentence, both shocking and cruel, cemented her story in the local history and culture.

Eventually Corriveau s body, metal gibbet and all, were taken down and buried in an unmarked grave in a Pointe-L vis churchyard. And for almost 100 years, that s where she stayed, her story slowly taking on mythic dimensions.

Fueled by her sensational, shocking trials and not a small amount of reactionary demonizing of women, the story of La Corriveau evolved, sometimes gaining supernatural flourishes. As the legend grew over the next several decades, her number of dead husbands rose to seven and there were whispers of witchery, or that she was descended from a famous poisoner. Her popular image became a macabre reflection of her final fate, a skeleton in a hanging cage that would appear to terrorize residents. People tried to understand that [event], so they made stories, says Toupin. La Corriveau is still living among us because many people know the story.

Then in 1851, the gibbet in which she was buried, her cage, was unearthed from the churchyard where it was interred. She was not in the cemetery. They decided to enlarge [the cemetery] and they found the cage just by luck, says Toupin. This discovery no doubt injected the folktales with even more life. Versions of La Corriveau began to appear in Canadian literature, and soon she had become something of a cultural institution. But her cage wouldn t remain in Canada for long.

Within months of being dug out of the ground, the gibbet was exhibited in Montr al, L vis, and Qu bec City, before ending up in the hands of P.T. Barnum, who put it on display as a curiosity in his New York museum, in August of 1851. It had a simple plaque that read, From Quebec.

Canada travelsThe cage on display in 2015. Fralambert/CC BY-SA 4.0

From there the cage passed to the Boston Museum in Massachusetts, around 1869. According to dates provided by Toupin, which have only recently been unearthed, the cage then passed to the Essex Institute in Salem, Massachusetts, around 1899, and was put on display at least once around 1931.

According to Dean Lahikainen, the Carolyn and Peter Lynch Curator of American Decorative Art at the Peabody Essex Museum, the modern incarnation of the Essex Institute, it s unclear precisely how long the Institute had the cage on display, but it stayed in their collection for over a century.

In the early 2010s, members of the L vis historical society rediscovered it at the Peabody Essex Museum, after it had been all but forgotten for most of the 20th century. Working with the museum, Corriveau s cage was repatriated to L vis for a special exhibition in 2013. According to Lahikainen, the directors and trustees at the Peabody Essex Museum then donated it to Mus e de la Civilisation in Quebec, where it remains to this day.

The legend of La Corriveau is still a well known folk tale in Quebec, and versions of her story have been turned into a number of books, operas, and more. But thanks to the return of the gibbet in which she met her final fate, the legends and stories are hardening into cold history. In fact Corriveau s gibbet is still being tested and studied to see if they might even be able to pull DNA from it. As Toupin says, Now it s real, it s there, it s scientific.

Correction 11/7/2017: A line has been added to clarify that New France was not under British control until around the time of Corriveau s death, but not when she was born.

    Gulliver s Travels Study Guide

Gulliver s Travels, a misanthropic satire of humanity, was written in 1726 by Jonathan Swift. Like many other authors, Swift uses the journey as the backdrop for his satire. He invents a second author, Captain Lemuel Gulliver, who narrates and speaks directly to the reader from his own experience. The original title of Swift s novel was Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World. In Four Parts. By Lemuel Gulliver, First a Surgeon, and then a Captain of several Ships.

Gulliver s name probably is an allusion to King Lemuel of Proverbs 31, who was a weak-minded prophet. Swift may also be connecting his character to a common mule, a half-ass, half-horse animal that is known for being stubborn and stupid. A gull is a person who is easily fooled or gullible. At the same time, Gulliver represents the everyman with his average intelligence and general good humor. The reader is able to identify with him and join him in his travels.

Even though Swift constantly alludes to events that were happening while he was alive, the story rings true today, bringing light to our own societal issues and to patterns of human nature. Throughout Gulliver s voyages, Swift goes to great lengths to scrutinize, parody, and satire various aspects of human, and often English, society. He does this in two ways, first by comparing humanity s ways with those of cultures decidedly beneath it (such as the Yahoos and the Lilliputians); second, by comparing humanity with cultures that are far superior in intellect and political ideals (such as the Houyhnhnms).

Gulliver embarks on four distinct journeys, each of which begins with a shipwreck and ends with either a daring escape or a congenial decision that it is time for Gulliver to leave. The societies Gulliver comes into contact with help him (and the reader) to examine his own culture more closely. When Gulliver s Travels was published in 1726, this examination of English culture was not appreciated. The novel was highly controversial because of the light in which it presented humanity-and more specifically, the English. When the novel was first published, Swift s identity was hidden because of the novel s volatile nature. The people who saw that the book made it into print also cut out a great deal of the most politically controversial sections, about which Swift became extremely frustrated. In a letter written under the pseudonym of Gulliver, Swift shows his annoyance with the edits made to his novel without his consent: I hope you will be ready to own publicly, he writes, whenever you shall be called to it, that by your great and frequent urgency you prevailed on me to publish a very loose and uncorrect account of my travels . . . . But I do not remember I gave you power to consent that anything should be omitted, and much less that anything should be inserted. The version of the novel read today is complete.

Part of what has helped Gulliver s Travels to persevere since Swift s time has been its appeal to people of all ages. The book has been read by countless children and has been made into more than one children s movie. At the same time, it has been widely critiqued and studied by literary scholars and critics, politicians, and philosophers. In addition, much like the works of Shakespeare, the comedy of the novel has something for people of all intellectual levels, from toilet humor to highbrow satires of political processes and of ideas.

Gulliver’s Travels , four-part satirical novel by Jonathan Swift , published anonymously to great controversy in 1726 as Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World.

    Gulliver s travels

SUMMARY: One of the keystones of English literature , Gulliver’s Travels is an exceedingly odd book—part novel, part adventure, and part prose satire , mocking English customs and the politics of the day. Because it was one of the books that gave birth to the novel form, it inevitably did not yet have the rules of the genre as an organizing tool.

    Gulliver s travels

Divided into four sections, the novel relates four adventures of Lemuel Gulliver, a surgeon and sea captain who visits remote regions of the world. In the beginning Gulliver is shipwrecked on the island of Lilliput, where people are six inches tall. Their smallness mirrors their small-mindedness as they spend their time indulging in ridiculous customs and petty debates; political affiliations, for example, are divided between men who wear high-heeled shoes (symbolic of the English Tories ) and those who wear low ones (representing the English Whigs ), and court positions are filled by those who are best at rope dancing. His second voyage takes him to Brobdingnag, where lives a race of giants of great practicality who do not understand abstractions; they are horrified when Gulliver recounts the splendid achievements of civilization. Gulliver’s third voyage takes him to the flying island of Laputa, which attacks lands below pelting rocks at them, like modern bombing raids. There he finds pedants obsessed with their own specialized areas of speculation and utterly ignorant of the rest of life. At Glubdubdrib, the Island of Sorcerers, he speaks with great men of the past and learns from them the lies of history. He also meets the Struldbrugs, who are immortal and, as a result, utterly miserable. This third adventure, however, is not nearly as focused, and it mainly consists of disconnected vignettes that do not have anything near the philosophical or even geographical unity of the first two parts. In the extremely bitter fourth section, Gulliver visits the land of the Houyhnhnms , a race of intelligent horses who are cleaner and more rational, communal, and benevolent (they have, most tellingly, no word for evil) than the brutish, filthy, greedy, and degenerate humanoid race called Yahoos whom they have tamed—an ironic twist on the human-beast relationship. Gulliver then returns to England, so disgusted with humanity that he abandons his family and buys horses and converses with them instead.

Whether read as a novel, simple travel fantasy , or biting satire, Gulliver’s Travels is one of the most thought-provoking reads in any genre or language. For all its mocking of human foibles, it holds out hope that moral, social, and political progress is perhaps possible if a mirror is held up to humankind’s baser instincts.

    Gulliver – s Travels Summary, GradeSaver, gullivers travels.#Gullivers #travels

    Gulliver s Travels Summary

Gulliver goes on four separate voyages in Gulliver s Travels. Each journey is preceded by a storm. All four voyages bring new perspectives to Gulliver s life and new opportunities for satirizing the ways of England.

The first voyage is to Lilliput, where Gulliver is huge and the Lilliputians are small. At first the Lilliputians seem amiable, but the reader soon sees them for the ridiculous and petty creatures they are. Gulliver is convicted of treason for making water in the capital (even though he was putting out a fire and saving countless lives)–among other crimes.

The second voyage is to Brobdingnag, a land of Giants where Gulliver seems as small as the Lilliputians were to him. Gulliver is afraid, but his keepers are surprisingly gentle. He is humiliated by the King when he is made to see the difference between how England is and how it ought to be. Gulliver realizes how revolting he must have seemed to the Lilliputians.

Gulliver s third voyage is to Laputa (and neighboring Luggnagg and Glubdugdribb). In a visit to the island of Glubdugdribb, Gulliver is able to call up the dead and discovers the deceptions of history. In Laputa, the people are over-thinkers and are ridiculous in other ways. Also, he meets the Stuldbrugs, a race endowed with immortality. Gulliver discovers that they are miserable.

His fourth voyage is to the land of the Houyhnhnms, who are horses endowed with reason. Their rational, clean, and simple society is contrasted with the filthiness and brutality of the Yahoos, beasts in human shape. Gulliver reluctantly comes to recognize their human vices. Gulliver stays with the Houyhnhnms for several years, becoming completely enamored with them to the point that he never wants to leave. When he is told that the time has come for him to leave the island, Gulliver faints from grief. Upon returning to England, Gulliver feels disgusted about other humans, including his own family.

Hrithik Roshan finally opens up about Anand Kumar s biopic –

Hrithik Roshan finally opens up about Anand Kumar s biopic Super 30, calls it an inspirational journey

Hrithik Roshan s Kaabil released in January. Shah Rukh Khan, whose Raees, released on the same day has had another release — Jab Harry Met Sejal — while Hrithik is yet to confirm his next project. The actor, who was at a luxury brand event recently, spoke to DNA After Hrs about the film that is likely to be his next release — Super 30, a biopic on mathematician Anand Kumar. Here the actor talks about his next project for the first time

Hrithik met Anand recently at his house. Talking about the meeting, Hrithik says, I had a very nice meeting with him. He’s a fantastic person. Apart from the movie, I have engaged in a lot of other conversations with him about his life. It’s an extremely inspirational journey. (ALSO READ Hrithik Roshan confirms his next will be a biopic on mathematician Anand Kumar, titled Super 30)

One of the major highlights of any biopic is the way an actor moulds and adapts himself while playing a real person on screen. Picking up nuances like walking and talking like the subject. However, Hrithik has a different approach. He says, That is a very individualistic approach. You don’t have to mimic or mirror someone to play them in a film. You need not be identical, so why even try doing that? That’s one way to do it, maybe. But the other way is to narrate a story and to project the emotions in the best way that suits the actor. It depends on how you want to play it. For me, it’s not important to be exactly like the person who I’m playing. I didn’t even do it for Akbar. It’s purely the emotional journey that needs to be communicated.

In the last seven months, there have been some projects with Hrithik’s name attached to them, but none have been made official. Prod him further about Super 30 and he says, It’s too early to get into such details. I am also looking at many other scripts. Nothing is official right now. But yes, this seems like a very, very good journey for me to collaborate on. We have to wait for the official announcement. (ALSO READ Katrina Kaif to reunite with Hrithik Roshan for Math wizard Anand Kumar s biopic? view pics)

Mathematics spells horror for most people, but Hrithik seems perfect to play the part as he tells me, I was pretty good at Mathematics as a kid. Unlike others, I used to love solving Maths problems. And his sons seem to have inherited that from him, I don’t need to sit and teach Maths to my kids (Hrehaan and Hridhaan) because they are also very good at it, added Hrithik.

Why the Pineapple Became the Symbol of Hospitality – Southern Living,

Why the Pineapple Became the Symbol of Hospitality

    pineapple water fountain

    There’s serious history behind it.

The rise of the pineapple as a symbol of hospitality in Colonial times no doubt came about because of its rarity. But the tropical fruit had a long journey before it found its present-day purpose as a refreshing cocktail or the ever-popular upside-down cake.

Introduction of Pineapples To Europe The first recorded encounter between a European and a pineapple occurred in November of 1493, when Christopher Columbus, on his second voyage to the Caribbean region, went ashore to inspect a deserted Carib village. Among dense foliage and wooden pillars carved with serpents, his crew came upon piles of freshly gathered vegetables and strange fruits. The European sailors ate, enjoyed and wrote about the curious new fruit, which had an abrasive, segmented exterior like a pinecone and a firm interior pulp like an apple.

Refined cane sugar and fresh fruit were expensive rarities when Columbus returned to Europe and introduced the sweet pineapple. It was an instant hit among the royal court, but it took almost two hundred years before gardeners were able to perfect a hothouse method for growing a tropical pineapple plant. Even in the late 17 th century, the pineapple remained so uncommon and coveted that King Charles II of England posed for an official portrait in an act that was symbolic of royal privilege — receiving a pineapple as a gift.

Across the Ocean In the small towns and sparse communities of the American colonies, two things worked together to solidify the pineapple’s reputation as a status symbol: sparse supply and high demand. Trade ships brought in preserved pineapple sweetmeats–pineapple chunks candied, glazed and packed in sugar, while the actual whole fruit was even more costly and difficult to obtain. Most of the fruit rotted during the hot, humid, and slow sea voyage from the Caribbean to the colonies. Only the speediest ships, aided by the best weather conditions, could deliver ripe, wholesome pineapples to the confectionery shops of cities such as Boston, Philadelphia, Annapolis and Williamsburg.

The Tradition The ability of a hostess to have a pineapple adorn her dining table for an important event said as much about her rank in society as it did about her ingenuity. These beautiful fruits were in such high demand, but so hard to get, that colonial confectioners would often rent them to households by the day. Later, the same fruit was sold to other, more affluent clients who actually ate it. While fruits in general–fresh, dried, candied and jellied–were in great demand, the pineapple was the true celebrity. Its rarity, expense, and striking beauty made it the ultimate exotic fruit. Visitors confronted with pineapple-topped food displays felt particularly honored by a hostess who obviously spared no expense to ensure her guests’ dining pleasure. In this manner, the image of the pineapple came to express the sense of hospitality characteristic of gracious home gatherings.

The Legend The sea captains of New England traded among the Caribbean Islands, returning to the colonies bearing their heavy cargoes of spices, rum, and a selection of fruits, which sometimes included pineapples. According to the legend, the captain would drop anchor in the harbor and see to his cargo and crew. Once his work was done, he would head home, stopping outside his house to spear a pineapple on a fence post. This would let his friends know of his safe return from sea. The pineapple was an invitation for them to visit, share his food and drink, and listen to tales of his voyage.

As the tradition and legend of the pineapple grew, colonial innkeepers added the pineapple to their signs and advertisements, and bedposts carved in the shape of a pineapple were a common sight at inns across the colonies. It is not surprising that this symbol of friendship and hospitality became a favorite motif of architects, artisans and craftsmen. The Shirley Plantation of Virginia, a bastion of Southern hospitality since 1613, has a pineapple finial atop its roof, and the motif appears as an architectural element throughout the home. This tradition continues today, for pineapples are still popular motifs for gateposts, door knockers, and beautiful serving pieces.

Pineapples share a colorful piece in the social history of our country. So which story do you prefer? Do you like the story of a proper Colonial hostess honoring her guests with an elaborate food display anchored by the elusive pineapple? Or perhaps you prefer the story of a swashbuckling sea captain returning from a voyage, nonchalantly spiking a pineapple worth a small fortune on his gatepost, signaling his friends to stop by for a pint and some stories?

Our Dance Major offers concentrations in either Performance and Choreography or Dance Education, with K-12 Certification.

    On Stage

Our students don’t just learn — they do. Our theatre and dance programs stage eighteen to twenty productions yearly, and with those come countless opportunities to perform, direct, choreograph, design or work back stage. Our performances are open our entire university family, as well as to our community and state. Subscriptions are available for our current dance and theatre seasons.

    The Conservatories

We offer two summer programs for aspiring young performers: the SC Summer Dance Conservatory and the Summer Drama Conservatory. The USC Dance Conservatory , now in its 23rd year, is an afterschool community outreach program committed to the training of young dancers from their first steps to advanced levels.

    South hall travels

    Location

Heljarchen Hall is a homestead which can be built on land purchased from the Jarl of The Pale in The Elder Scrolls V: Hearthfire.

    Contents

    Overview Edit

Heljarchen Hall sits on a rocky mountain slope in the snowy tundra of the Pale. To the south, Whiterun and the Throat of the World can be seen on a clear day, while Loreius Farm is just a short distance away. To the east and north, the wild forests of the Pale stretch far, and the slopes to the west lead higher up the mountainside to Stonehill Bluff and the Tower of Mzark.

    Features Edit

    • Heljarchen is unique in that a grain mill for making flour is available.
    • Proximity to the Tower of Mzark allows easy access to and from Blackreach.
    • Clay and quarried stone can be mined directly in front of the carpenter’s workbench; a pickaxe and three quarried stone are also near the workbench. A corundum ore vein is located northeast of the carpenter’s workbench, in between the two cliffs.

    Purchase Edit

Upon completion of the quests “Waking Nightmare” and “Kill the Giant”, this site can be purchased from Skald the Elder. If the Dragonborn sides with the Imperial Legion during the Civil War questline, then Brina Merilis will offer it out of gratitude. Both will sell the property for 5,000 . Depending on which faction the Dragonborn sided with in the Civil War, they may have to be level 20. source?

    Characters Edit

    • Gregor, Housecarl – assigned by the Jarl.
    • Oriella, bard – hired by the steward.
    • Markus, carriage driver retained by the steward.

    Trivia Edit

    • Adopted male children dislike the location, complaining that it is too cold to play outside, whilst female children will say how nice it is.
    • As with the other houses, random bandits attacking the home or a giant from the nearby Blizzard Rest paying a visit may result in livestock getting killed.
    • The name “Heljarchen” may come from Helarchen Creek, a small village that can be visited in The Elder Scrolls: Arena.

How To Cycle Around The World In 3 Easy Steps, heena

    heena tours and travels

It doesn t really matter which one, as long as it s comfortable, but you won t get far without it.

You ll need a few years for this, so write a letter to your boss explaining that you re sorry but there s something you have to do. (Skip this step if you are a student/unemployed/retired.)

You can t cycle round the world without setting off. So strap a tent and sleeping bag to your bike, ask the neighbour to look after the cat, and pedal away from home.

Once you have accomplished the above three steps, the rest will work itself out.

    Optional additional steps

You could spend several months collecting information about border crossings, visas, equipment, routes, seasons, budgets and timescales. But equally you could leave now, take it day by day and figure these things out on the road, trusting that instinct and initiative (and free wifi) will serve you better in the long run than an encyclopedic knowledge of international bureaucracy.

You could get a gym membership and a personal trainer and join a local cycling club and spend several months building up fitness, just like real athletes do. Alternatively, you could attain an equal (or higher) level of fitness by cycling all day, every day, during your first few weeks on the road.

You could put tens of thousands of pounds/dollars/euros in the bank to create a feeling of security. Or your could sell everything you own right now, set off at the end of your notice period, and then simply avoid buying anything. You ll sleep rough, eat bread and jam and fruit off trees, Couchsurf, accept all invitations, and avoid sightseeing (you can do that when you retire). When you re low on cash, simply use the skills you didn t know you had to earn more locally.

    Get loads of fancy equipment.

You could blow a few grand on the best touring bike, the lightest tent, the reliable-est stove, the waterproof-est waterproofs, etcetera. But equally you could salvage a bike from a scrapyard, get a tent from a charity shop, raid TK Maxx, and make a stove out of a beer can (saving several years worth of bread and jam in the process).

You could spend a long time poring over maps at home so you ll know exactly where you re going every day. Alternatively, since the beauty of the bicycle is in the freedom it affords its rider, you could simply leave on a compass bearing or a whim and see where the road takes you, since it doesn t really matter where you are as long as you re moving.

Start a website, Twitter account and Facebook page.

You could get up to speed on websites and blogging and social media and use all of these things to communicate your journey in real-time from the road. Or you could take this rare opportunity to reduce your online obligations to zero and experience life on Earth instead. (You can tell the story better later anyway.)

You could spend months drafting proposals and cold-calling companies in search of sponsorship. Or you could spend the same months working overtime to buy the same stuff. Then, when you change your plans or fall in love, it won t matter to anyone other than you.

You could decide to set a fundraising target for a charity, possibly for a genuinely personal reason but more likely because you feel you should justify taking a few years off being a responsible hard-working citizen. Or you could decide that travel needs no justification and that the long-term benefits of doing it can t be measured (least of all financially).

You could contact local and national press with details of your epic undertaking. Or you could prefer to think that the freedom you wanted from cycle touring feels more real when nobody is watching (and when you re not obliged to send press releases from your tent when you d rather be reading Kerouac).

You could sell your house, fire your boss, divorce your husband/wife and children and leave with a gigantic middle finger attached to the back of your bike. Alternatively, you could transform your work and family life into something that can be sustained long-term, both on the road and if/when your ride comes to an end.

You could attempt to set a new world record for cycling round the world. Or you could remember that you were never an athlete anyway, that the point of cycling was the independence and flexibility it d give you, and that you d rather enjoy the ride than planning it to end as quickly as possible.

You could aim to keep a daily count of your distance, altitude, average speed, air pressure, etcetera, in order to try and quantify your success. Or you could decide that the distance you ve pedalled has as much relevance to success as the colour of your increasingly-grubby T-shirt, and that without numbers to think about you can better concentrate on how you re actually feeling about things right now.

You could plan to hit a series of global milestones in order to arrive back home at a premeditated point in time. Alternatively, you could realise that if you learn anything on the road it ll likely change you; that your global milestones might one day not make sense any more, that coming back might become an equally irrelevant idea, or that — shock horror — you might even get bored of pedalling altogether.

    Actually cycle round the world.

You could actually finish what you foolishly started all those years ago, which would be a fantastic example of concept winning over experience. Or you could quit being stubborn and allow your journey could grow in unpredictable ways, resulting in your route looking less like a neat line across continents and more like Mr Messy.

There are so many ways to make long-term adventure cycling more complicated than it could be.

For certain individuals, added complexities may be entirely relevant. To take my own example, it made complete sense to start a blog 7 years ago, because I wanted to write and a public blog was a means to hold myself accountable and combat my own laziness.

Nowadays, as a result of having that outlet, I write for the love of it. I m inspired by my subject. I loved every minute of the two years I spent crafting my first book (and even when I hated it, I loved it). I d still write if the Internet didn t exist and all I had was a diary.

But for every would-be bicycle traveller for whom extra steps are relevant, there are a hundred others who ve kept it simple and thus you ve never heard of, who have no blogs or Twitter or Flickr accounts and simply write to their families from Internet cafes every couple of weeks.

These invisible travellers, happily doing their own thing and beholden to no-one, actually constitute the majority of long-term touring cyclists, though you d hardly know it from surfing the web. And that why surfing the web, for a would-be long-term bicycle traveller, is dangerous.

The single biggest danger of the extra steps so often seen and suggested is that they introduce spiralling complexity and thus increase the chances of a dream journey never happening.

Part of the problem is the nature of the Internet itself — it s incredibly easy to have the idea, Google it, and immediately get so bogged down in the details of the way Celebrity Cyclist X did it that the original idea is lost.

I see this every November, when I spend a weekend hanging out at the Royal Geographical Society s expedition-planning conference, Explore, in London. My unofficial job at Explore is to tell legions of would-be adventure cyclists that they don t need to come to Explore to plan their cycling adventure; they just need to get on a bike and go.

It s a bizarre and circular arrangement, but it seems to work as I invariably get emails from people on the road, months down the line, saying thanks for advice which was just a restatement of the time-honoured KISS principle.

It s also been difficult to ignore the growing number of high-profile cycling expeditions that — according to their own definitions of success — fail. Institutions are built, grand achievements are pointed to and then the complex concepts fail to live up to the experience, which in reality is about as simple as life ever gets.

Most of those journeys start as simple dreams to go and let loose on a bike for a while and see what happens. Unnecessary complications too often bring them down.

So for god s sake don t imitate what you see so often online. If you ve got the dream, take steps 1 to 3, then enjoy the ride. Only take extra steps if they really, really, really make sense to you.

“When the lights go out for the last time, when the crowds have left the pavilions and the avenues, a World Exhibition begins a new life. Less glittering but more profound, this new life is nourished in the souls of those who visited the Exhibition, and it will blossom into a legend for generations to come.”

Canada travelsLa Corriveau s Cage as it appeared in a 1916 Essex Institute catalog. BeatrixBelibaste/Public Domain

Collection of entry tax from ‘Other State’ vehicles begins in Telangana

Collection of entry tax from ‘Other State’ vehicles begins in Telangana

Collection of entry tax from ‘Other State’ vehicles begins in Telangana

    Kesineni travels

Telangana State Road Transport Authority officials began collecting new Motor Vehicle entry tax for vehicles entering the State from Tuesday midnight at all the 14 check posts.

In wake of private bus operators taking their vehicles off the roads in protest against the new entry tax, flow of traffic on the major arterial highways including NH – 65 (Hyderabad-Vijayawada), NH – 44 (Hyderabad-Bengaluru) came down a bit.

However, reports suggested that vehicles coming from Andhra Pradesh were paying temporary tax for a week in anticipation of the issue being settled shortly. Many vehicle owners are paying tax for just one week to operate their vehicles without any interruption between the two states. But some big time bus operators were paying the quarterly tax.

The move to levy the MV Tax for other State vehicles was stipulated in Government of Telangana’s G.O. MS. No. 15 that was issued on Monday and came into effect from midnight of March 31 which is the time frame set by the earlier G.O. Ms. 43 issued by Governor on June 1, 2014.

    Some Private buses off road

Speaking to The Hindu, Deputy Transport Commissioner, Nalgonda, M. Chandrashekar Goud said they have started the tax collection from midnight onwards on Wednesday. Though operation of private buses has come down, Mr. Chandrasekhar said that rest of vehicles were plying without any hindrance.

However, he said that most of the vehicle users were paying short-term tax to enter Telangana. There are three check posts between Andhra Pradesh and Telangana in Nalgonda district which has the longest border with AP.

The vehicles coming from Vijayawada and others parts of A.P. enter Telangana near Kodad where the Transport officials have made arrangements to collect the tax. Since the Transport Department appointed sufficient staff there was not much of waiting time. At any given point of time only 15 to 20 vehicles were waiting at the check posts at Kodad.

Vehicles coming from Guntur, Prakasam districts enter Telangana at Damarcherla where the Telangana Government set up a check post. Another check posts was also set up at Nagarjunasagar.

As of now, the Transport officials have collected Rs. 50 lakh from vehicle owners at Kodad, Rs. 15 lakh at Damarcherla check post and just Rs.1 lakh at Nagarjunasagar. Situation was peaceful at all the three check posts since no one has staged any kind of protest from Andhra Pradesh side of the border.

    750 buses run daily

According to officials about 750 buses including APSRTC and private buses are being operated between the two states every day. As many as 300 buses are being operated from Vijayawada to Hyderabad alone. An estimated 30,000 people visit Hyderabad from Andhra Pradesh every day. Meanwhile, on an average 30,000 vehicles travels on NH-65, that connects Hyderabad with Vijayawada, every month.

    Two buses stopped

A Nizamabad report said two private buses could not enter Telangana State through Salabathpur inter-state check post on account of non-payment of entry tax.

When contacted, Vijayawada MP Kesineni Nani, who owns Kesineni Travels, said that he had paid up the fresh tax for all of his 100 vehicles that run on different routes and enter Telangana through different checkposts. “I have always said, customers should not be troubled and hence never even entertained the idea of keeping my buses off the road,” he stated.

Asked about how much money was collected since Tuesday midnight, Transport Department officials said each bus was paying slightly over Rs.1 lakh. The collection could be between Rs. 2 and Rs. 3 crore by Wednesday afternoon.

Gulliver – s Travels Study Guide, GradeSaver, gullivers travels.#Gullivers #travels

JUST MARRIED! Priyamani gets hitched to businessman boyfriend Mustafa Raj view inside pics

After dating for the longest time, South actress Priyamani has finally tied the knot with her businessman boyfriend Mustafa Raj. The ceremony took place in Bengaluru on August 23rd.

After dating for the longest time, South actress Priyamani has finally tied the knot with her businessman boyfriend Mustafa Raj. The ceremony took place in Bengaluru on August 23rd. The couple opted for a simple marriage as a function was conducted at the registrar office, post which a reception will be followed on August 24th. The reception is being held to celebrate their marriage among their close friends and industry folks. However, the couple did have a small sangeet ceremony. One of Priyamani s close friend, Parul posted pictures from the ceremony on Twitter. She tweeted, Had a blast last night at @priyamani6 @mustufaraj Sangeet party !! The couple got engaged last year in May as the diva announced on Twitter, Happy to announce that Mustufa Raj and I got engaged on Friday the 27th at a close and private function at home! with an adorable click. It does come as a shock since it happened in such a hush hush manner. But we re super happy for this couple.

It s exactly how the actress wanted the wedding to be. Earlier in an interview with Deccan Herald, Priyamani had exclaimed how she prefers to have a small and simple wedding. Grandeur is not her cup of tea and she d rather go for a private and more intimate ceremony. We have always wanted a simple wedding and that s exactly what we are going to do. The reception will be a grand one, said the 33 year old actress. Anyway, you folks should check out their sangeet pics below. We re hoping to see a lot more coming from these two today evening as the reception will be held today.

While Priyamani just got married, she will be resuming work within two days. Marriage won t be stopping her from pursuing films and in fact, she is already working on a project as of now. She had stated that marriage won t change a thing and that she will continue working in films. That s a relief. Priyamani and Mustafa have been dating for quite a while. The businessman hailing from Mumbai is actually very famous in the industry circle as he has been organizing Celebrity Cricket League for the South fraternity. Besides CCL, he has quite a lot of businesses under him. Congratulations you two! Stay tuned to this space for the reception videos and pics!

India Calling: An Intimate Portrait of a Nation s Remaking

[A] smart, evocative and sharply observed memoir. Giridharadas’s narrative gusto makes the familiar fresh. —The Wall Street Journal

Anand Giridharadas sensed something was afoot as his plane from America prepared to land in Bombay. An elderly passenger looked at him and said, We re all trying to go that way, pointing to the rear. You, you re going this way? Giridharadas was returning to the land of his ancestors, amid an unlikely economic boom. But he was more interested in its cultural upheaval, as a new generation has sought to reconcile old traditions and customs with new ambitions and dreams.

    anand travels

Reversing his parents immigrant path, a young American-born writer returns to India and discovers an old country making itself new

But he was interested less in its gold rush than in its cultural upheaval, as a new generation has sought to reconcile old traditions and customs with new ambitions and dreams.

In India Calling, Giridharadas brings to life the people and the dilemmas of India today, through the prism of his émigré family history and his childhood memories of India. He introduces us to entrepreneurs, radicals, industrialists, and religious seekers, but, most of all, to Indian families. He shows how parents and children, husbands and wives, cousins and siblings are reinventing relationships, bending the meaning of Indianness, and enduring the pangs of the old birthing the new.

Through their stories, and his own, he paints an intimate portrait of a country becoming modern while striving to remain itself.
