Traveling From The U.S.

Having the correct documentation in place before your trip is essential to travel outside the United States. Below are the Passport Visa requirements that will help make your trip run smoothly.

Passport

A passport is required for ALL international travel. If you’re traveling anywhere overseas, even to Canada, the Caribbean or Mexico, you need a passport to board an international flight and to enter any country. In general, your passport must be valid for at least six months after the date you enter a foreign country.

Visit the U. S. State Department’s website opens in a new window if you need a new passport or your passport is about to expire. There, you can find information on obtaining first time passports, passport renewals, second passport issuance and extra blank pages for an existing passport. You can also visit the U. S. Postal Service opens in a new window to find the closest Post Office that can also provide new and renewal passport services.

Visa

A travel visa is required to enter many countries. To see if one is required for your upcoming trip, visit the U. S. State Department travel website opens in a new window .

Re-entering the U.S.

Check the travel documents you will need to re-enter the U.S. For example, if you are traveling to the U.S. from Canada, select United States in the Destination country box. This search engine and database are provided and managed by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). You may wish to double-check foreign entry requirements by contacting your local embassy or consulate.

Traveling to a U.S. Territory

If you are a U. S. citizen and want to travel to one of its territories, you will not need a U. S. Passport. Sufficient ID would be a U. S. driver’s license or other valid photo identification, the same as if you were flying to New York or Seattle. However, U.S. residents with foreign passports would be subject to the same entry procedures in one of the territories that they would be on the mainland.

These destinations are considered U. S. territories: Puerto Rico, Guam, Saipan and the U. S. Virgin Islands.

Two Air France flights from U.S. diverted by bomb threats

Emergency personnel are shown on the tarmac at Salt Lake City International Airport in this photograph taken by passenger Keith Rosso from a seat inside Air France flight 65, November 17, 2015.

LOS ANGELES Two Air France flights bound for Paris from the United States were diverted for several hours on Tuesday following anonymous bomb threats, and more than 700 passengers and crew were safely taken off the planes, officials said.

Flight 65, an Airbus A-380 that departed from Los Angeles, landed safely in Salt Lake City, where passengers and crew were escorted into the terminal, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration said. The Salt Lake Tribune, citing an airport official, said it was carrying 497 passengers and crew.

The FBI said in a statement that no evidence was found aboard the plane “which would lend credibility to the threats” against the flight.

The airport said operations were not affected, and local Utah media including broadcaster KSL reported that passengers had been cleared to reboard and resume their journey.

Keith Rosso, a passenger who tweeted a photo shortly after takeoff from Los Angeles, said he was “thankful to everyone who has been working to keep everyone calm and make sure air travel is safe. Hope to be taking off again shortly.”

A separate Boeing 777 that left Dulles International Airport outside Washington, D.C. Flight 55, was diverted to Halifax International Airport in Nova Scotia, which said 262 passengers and crew members had safely disembarked.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Halifax said on its Twitter feed that police dogs searched the plane for evidence of explosives, but no details were disclosed.

In a brief statement, Air France said both flights had been the “subjects of anonymous threats received after their respective take-offs.”

“As a precautionary measure and to conduct all necessary security checks, Air France, applying the safety regulations in force, decided to request the landings of both aircraft,” the airline said in its statement.

It said authorities inspected the aircraft, passengers and luggage, adding: “An investigation will be led by the authorities to identify the source of the telephone call.”

Security officials have been on high alert since Islamic State militants claimed responsibility for attacks last week in Paris that killed 129 people. Russia has said the group was also responsible for the downing on Oct. 31 of a plane returning to St. Petersburg from the Sharm al-Sheikh resort in Egypt, killing all 224 on board.

The incidents did not appear to be causing flight delays or cancellations elsewhere.

According to data on flight tracking website flightradar24.com, flights operated by both Air France and other airlines appear to be taking off and landing normally at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris.

Health Information for Travelers to Puerto Rico (U. S. ) –

    #travel to puerto rico
    #

    Vaccines and Medicines

You should be up to date on routine vaccinations while traveling to any destination. Some vaccines may also be required for travel.

Get travel vaccines and medicines because there is a risk of these diseases in the country you are visiting.

Ask your doctor what vaccines and medicines you need based on where you are going, how long you are staying, what you will be doing, and if you are traveling from a country other than the US.

You can get hepatitis B through sexual contact, contaminated needles, and blood products, so CDC recommends this vaccine if you might have sex with a new partner, get a tattoo or piercing, or have any medical procedures.

    • Travelers involved in outdoor and other activities in remote areas that put them at risk for animal bites (such as adventure travel and caving).
    • People who will be working with or around animals (such as veterinarians, wildlife professionals, and researchers).
    • People who are taking long trips or moving to remote areas in Puerto Rico
    • Children, because they tend to play with animals, might not report bites, and are more likely to have animal bites on their head and neck.

AT – T adds unlimited home internet plan to its U-verse

    #

AT T today announced that it’s upping the monthly data caps on its U-verse home internet service and introducing a new unlimited option. Now, customers who pay for the first tier of U-verse, the slowest option at .8Mbps to 6Mbps, will have 300GB to use per month instead of 250GB. For those who pay for the next speed tier, the cap goes from 250GB to 600GB, while the data cap for the fastest U-verse option has doubled from 500GB to 1TB. If that still doesn’t sound too appealing, you can pay $30 extra per month to have unlimited data. The new plans take effect on May 23rd.

U-verse, which has a small footprint in the US relative to other ISPs, has been an outlier in the broadband market for its use of data caps. The controversial approach to home internet limits how many gigabytes customers can use in the comfort of their home Wi-Fi network, similar to a mobile phone plan. For instance, Comcast has only just begun experimenting with data caps in select US markets. So the introduction of an unlimited U-verse plan sounds as if it would be welcome, if not for the somewhat excessive $30 surcharge.

AT T is charging an extra $30 per month for unlimited data

AT T, which charges an extra $10 per 50GB of usage after a customer hits their cap, says about 4 percent of its U-verse customers may still exceed their monthly caps, so it’s limiting the amount you can be charged per month to $100. If you’re a subscriber to both U-verse internet and DirectTV package — or a U-verse TV customer who has consolidated your AT T bill — you get the unlimited internet perk free of charge, the company says.

Best U.S. Cities for Affordable Getaways

By Katrina Brown Hunt April 1, 2015

When David Bakke visits Savannah, he loves dining at the upscale Olde Pink House. But Bakke, a writer for personal finance site MoneyCrashers. has figured out how to avoid the high price tag—he sits in the restaurant’s basement section, the Planters Tavern. “By taking the trip downstairs,” he says, “you get extraordinary ambiance and affordable food.”

It’s a good example of why the quaint, accessible Georgian city made the top 10 for affordable getaways, according to Travel + Leisure readers. In this year’s America’s Favorite Cities survey, readers ranked 35 metropolitan areas in qualities such as fine dining and cultural offerings. which become especially enticing when offered in a lower price range.

Even as the economy shows some signs of improvement, plenty of travelers still want to maximize value. According to the Traveler Sentiment Index, from marketing firm MMGY Global, 57 percent of Americans are planning a vacation sometime within the next six months—but high gas prices worry 51 percent of them. Hotel rates have also ticked up about 7 percent since summer 2012, according to Kayak.com .

Daunting gas prices may be another reason that pedestrian-friendly cities such as Savannah and Portland, OR, won over T+L readers for their affordability. Another influential factor: free-admission museums and historical attractions. such as the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Park in Atlanta, or Baltimore’s Museum of Art, which has the largest Matisse collection in the world.

But freebies aren’t enough: Washington, D.C. won the survey’s free attractions category, yet ranked as one of the least affordable cities overall, perhaps due to high hotel and restaurant prices. For cheap eats, look to Kansas City (rated No. 1 most affordable getaway), as well as Nashville and Providence, which delivered some of voters’ favorite barbecue. burgers. and pizza .

Low-impact bar prices don’t hurt, either. “Maybe it’s our Yankee frugality, but well drinks start at $3.50 in some places,” says Portland, ME, local Kelsey Goldsmith. “My friends who come in from out of town laugh when they get their bar tabs.”

They’re laughing all the way to the bank, that is. Bakke says his Savannah foodie trick is just another valuable lesson from the recession: “I’ve learned how to fly for cheaper, and I’ve found ways to enjoy entertainment activities while on vacation at a cheaper price.”

Read on for the most affordable U.S. city getaways.

“When you spend the whole day at some place like a theme park or zoo, you want everyone in your family to enjoy it — young and old,” said Travis Katz, CEO and co-founder of travel planning site Gogobot .

That’s what the site’s favorite spots for kids have in common, Katz said. The 15 best attractions in the U.S. for kids. announced Tuesday as part of Gogobot’s Travelers’ Favorites awards, were selected based on Gogobot user recommendations and the number of visits from the site’s 3.7 million users.

And the best in the U.S. for kids? That would be the Exploratorium on Pier 15 in San Francisco.

The interactive learning lab features 600 exhibits.

“The slogan at the entrance says ‘Touch Everything,’ making it more like a giant playground than a museum,” Katz said.

Plus, there’s an evening event for adults only on the first Thursday of each month, with a cash bar and film screenings in addition to the exhibits. See? Fun for everyone.

No Threat Found on Both Diverted Flights From U.S. to Paris

    November 18, 2015

The Associated Press, November 18, 2015

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) Authorities cleared both Air France flights bound for Paris from the U.S. that were diverted because of anonymous threats phoned in after they had taken off.

Air France Flight 65 from Los Angeles International Airport to Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris was diverted to Salt Lake City International Airport Tuesday night, Air France said in a statement. At about the same time a second flight, Air France 55, took off from Dulles International Airport outside Washington and was diverted to Halifax on Canada s East Coast, officials said.

Passengers got off both planes safely and were taken to terminals.

American authorities investigated and found no credible threat, according to an FBI statement released late Tuesday night.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said investigators found no evidence of an explosive device after they searched the plane and luggage.

Air France said in a statement that the flight in Salt Lake City took off for Paris at 12:29 a.m. Wednesday. The flight in Canada was postponed until Wednesday evening and passengers were accommodated in Halifax.

Keith Rosso of Santa Monica. California. a passenger on the flight from Los Angeles with his fiancee, said everything was smooth, everything was great, everything was going swell for the first two hours of the flight, then things changed.

The flight attendants quickly came by and cleared plates, then there was an announcement that we were making an emergency landing and that the flight attendants were trained exactly for situations like this, Rosso told The Associated Press by phone from the airport in Salt Lake City.

He said he looked at the flight monitor at his seat and saw that we had made a pretty sharp right turn we had been almost near Canada toward Salt Lake City.

Rosso said an FBI agent interviewed the passengers after the landing.

In Halifax, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police led the investigation.

RCMP Constable Mark Skinner said there were 262 people onboard that plane, which also received an anonymous threat.

We received a complaint of a bomb threat and we responded to it, Skinner said.

Halifax Stanfield International Airport spokesman Peter Spurway said police cleared the plane. He said passengers will go through Canadian customs, pick up their baggage and be put up at hotels overnight.

The threats came after last week s attacks in Paris that killed 129 people and heightened security concerns around the world.

U.S. issues travel warnings for Lebanon and Turkey

Warnings come after drawdown of non-emergency government personnel.

    Story Highlights

State Department issued warnings because of possible attacks Agency has warned against traveling to many parts of the Middle East Situation in Lebanon portrayed as especially dangerous

257 CONNECT TWEET 5 LINKEDIN 19 COMMENT EMAIL MORE

The U.S. Department of State has issued warnings against traveling to Lebanon and Turkey because of the possibility of attacks against U.S. citizens.

The Friday warnings come after a State Department order for a drawdown of non-emergency government personnel and their families in Beirut, Lebanon, and Adana, Turkey.

So far this summer, the State Department has issued several warnings for travel throughout the Middle East, including to Iraq, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Israel, the West Bank and Gaza.

The warning for Lebanon says “all travel” should be avoided because the potential for a “spontaneous upsurge in violence remains.” The warning for Turkey says U.S. citizens should avoid the southeastern part of the country. It does not specifically mention Istanbul, a popular destination in northwest Turkey.

John Rendeiro, vice president of global security and intelligence for International SOS, which provides assistance to travelers abroad, says the State Department seems to be making preparations for possible U.S.-led military intervention in Syria.

“This is sort of preparing in the event that there is a military strike and some kind of action in Syria that will lead to retaliation by Syria and its allies,” he says. “If they are taking measures warning their own employees about the threat, they have to notify the public about that.”

The State Department portrayed the situation in Lebanon, which shares a border with Syria, as especially dangerous for U.S. citizens.

Lebanese government authorities, the State Department warning says, can’t guarantee the protection of visitors if violence should break out.

“Access to borders, airports, roads and seaports can be interrupted with little or no warning,” the warning says. “Public demonstrations occur frequently with little warning and have the potential to become violent. Family, neighborhood or sectarian disputes often escalate quickly and can lead to gunfire or other violence with little or no warning. The ability of U.S. government personnel to reach travelers or provide emergency services may be severely limited.”

The State Department says that a number of extremist groups operate in Lebanon, including Hezbollah, which the U.S. government has designated a terrorist organization.

Hezbollah and other paramilitary groups have been known to detain foreigners for “political motivations as well as for interrogation – sometimes for hours or longer,” the warning says. Kidnapping is also a problem.

Travelers should particularly stay away from the border regions between Lebanon and Syria because the conflict in Syria has led to incidents there that have resulted in deaths in some cases, the warning says.

Lebanon’s conflicts with Israel can also pose a problem for travelers.

“Rocket attacks from southern Lebanon into Israel have occurred in the past and remain a potential threat,” the warning says. “These attacks frequently provoke a military response from Israel. The rocket attacks and responses occur with no warning.”

As for Turkey, the State Department says that there have been no direct attacks on U.S. citizens but that travelers should still avoid demonstrations and large gatherings because they can escalate into violence.

The State Department says anyone who has to travel to the two countries should enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program to receive updates and make it easier for the U.S. Embassy to stay in touch.

U.S. citizens traveling to Lebanon, in particular, should “keep a low profile, assess their personal security and vary times and routes for all required travel,” the warning says.

    Northeast

    Cities Served: 8

BoltBus is operated jointly by old-school Greyhound and Peter Pan, but it’s much hipper than its parents. For example, send a complaint via Twitter, and the issue will often be addressed by the techie team before you step off the bus.

    L.A. San Diego Vegas

    Cities Served: 4

Sure, Lux Bus offers door-to-door service between Southern California hotels. But the line’s bread and butter is its cushy L.A.–Vegas route: leather seats, free snacks, and free beer and wine so you can start the sin before you hit Sin City.

    Northeast

    Cities Served: 4

With service between New York and the D.C. metro area, Vamoose has options for any capital commuter. Senators can choose the $50-each-way Gold Bus (which has added legroom), while interns can pay with campus cash from local colleges.

    Northeast

    Cities Served: 3

Tripper Bus, which runs between New York and the D.C. area, values loyalty: after buying 8 one-way trips, you’ll pick up a one-way for free. In addition, each ride includes one $1, one $5, and one $10 ticket—a steal for frequent buyers.

U.S. Car Insurance to Travel to Mexico

What to know about car insurance in Mexico. (Photo: Neil Beer/Photodisc/Getty Images )

    Related Articles

You might have the most comprehensive car insurance policy a U.S. company can provide, but when it comes to driving in Mexico, your U.S. car insurance will not cover your liability for damages or for injury to other drivers. You must purchase a Mexican car insurance policy if you want to avoid the high cost of an accident or even a long stay in a Mexican jail.

    U.S. Insurance Policies

Your U.S. car insurance policy has several different types of coverage. The liability coverage of your U.S. car insurance policy will have absolutely no legal bearing in Mexico. This means if you were involved in an accident in which you injured another driver or his vehicle, you would be uncovered and possibly arrested if you didn’t have Mexican car insurance. Your U.S. insurance company might be able to offer you collision and comprehensive coverage for possible damage to your own vehicle, but this is unlikely. Your insurance company can provide specific information.

Why You Need Car Insurance in Mexico

    Purchasing Car Insurance

If you are driving a rental car across the border from the U.S. to Mexico, you can purchase collision insurance coverage from the rental car company. However, whether you are driving a rental car or your own car into Mexico, you must purchase liability insurance from a company that is licensed in Mexico. You can purchase coverage at the border or online before leaving for Mexico. You will need to purchase liability insurance that is specifically for foreign-plated cars, also called tourist car insurance.

    Invoking Your Coverage

If you are involved in an accident in Mexico, you and the other party may decide not to call the police. Many minor accidents in Mexico are settled between the parties. However, you will not be covered for damage to your car unless you contact your insurance adjuster. If the damage is severe or if there were injuries, most Mexican insurance companies will send an adjuster to the scene of the accident to view the damage, to interview witnesses and, if necessary, to confirm for the police that you have coverage. You may be required to remain at the scene until the adjuster arrives, so be sure you understand the details of your policy.

    13 Tips for Low-hassle, Low-cost Business Travel

By Anita Campbell Published: June 18, 2015

If your travel plans this summer include a trip for business (or even for family vacations!), be sure to consider these tips for low-hassle, low-cost travel. A little planning can make your travel cheaper with less hassle, too.

    1.     Sign up for cloud email and documents

No more thumb drives or syncing devices upon your return. The beauty of the cloud is that you can easily carry your emails, photos, graphics, and documents along with you. Everything is available in one place upon your return, no matter which device you use.

    2.     Use noise cancelling earphones

Earphones that limit outside noise let you work no matter how many cranky babies are seated around you on the plane, or how many decibels are in that airport coffee shop. More importantly, they reduce noise-related stress.

    3.     Consider alternative methods of ground transportation

Services like Uber are a good alternative to taxi cabs and rental cars in many cities.  It can save money, and it may be a convenient option in locations that lack good taxi service or where you don’t need a rental call.  You use a mobile app to request a pickup, so the convenience factor can be helpful.

    4.     Lunch is cheaper- make it your main meal

At most restaurants lunch is considerably cheaper than dinner. Eating a big lunch late in the afternoon may save you money – especially over a week’s travel.  Skip the evening meal with just a snack to tide you over.

    5.     Hit grocery stores instead of restaurants

Who says you always have to eat in restaurants when traveling? Eating grocery store food instead of restaurant food can be cheaper and healthier. Price savvy travelers and those who watch their diets carefully look for nearby grocery stores. Buying food there instead of going to an often overpriced restaurant and taking it back to your room or to a local park will cut costs.

    6.     Make business your main travel purpose- and you may be able to deduct it

While it may be tempting to get some business done while on a family trip or other travel for pleasure, that may not be the smartest move from a tax deduction standpoint. That’s because the IRS will only allow you to deduct for travel when primarily done for business. You can mix business with pleasure while on your business excursion- just be sure you don’t deduct for the non-business part of your trip. And, most importantly, make sure you document your travel as being “primarily” for business.

    7.     When traveling internationally use a translation app

Don’t count on everyone speaking English in your international travels.

Today there are translation apps you can use on your smartphone that will provide common travel phrases and requests to help you communicate.  The TripLingo app, for example, not only provides a number of travel phrases, but will also provide instant voice translations in up to 19 languages.

    8.     Get a micro projector

If you give sales or customer presentations, you need some way to show your screen to a group.  A micro-projector that can be used with a mobile device is a big help.  Gone are the days of lugging a heavy projector around – or worse, asking the company you are visiting to use one.

    9.     Bring an extra charger

No matter how many extra phone chargers you think you need, it’s easy to run out. If you’re traveling all day and taking connecting flights, you may not be able to find charging stations at airports – and when you use a GPS app to navigate around in a rental car, it practically drains your smartphone battery in front of your eyes.

Even when I carry extra chargers and power everything up before I leave home or the hotel, I always seem to have something die before the day’s end.  Do yourself a favor and get an additional backup battery/charger for your next trip.

    10.  Learn to pack efficiently

Packing to save space is an art form, and efficient packing can nearly double your space inside a suitcase or briefcase, which can also prevent costs associated with checked bags (or allow you to use a smaller carry-on, saving your back in the process).  Here are a few tips:

    • Roll clothes in plastic bags saves space and keep wrinkles down
    • Place smaller items inside larger items to save space
    • Explore mobile apps like the PackPoint app to help you plan your packing for extended trips

    11.  Email your important items to yourself in advance

Always email yourself your full itinerary (including those all-important confirmation numbers), and a copy of your identification and your passport in advance.  It’s a small step, but if you’ve ever had a briefcase left behind in a rental car or your pocket picked, you’ll appreciate this.

If your boarding passes, ID, and/or passport get lost or stolen, you at least have access via email to recover them.  This enables you to provide evidence to help you start the process of getting replacements and return home.

    12.  Check Seat Guru for the best seat choices

Not all seats are the same on every plane or even on the same flight.

Seat Guru shows the configuration of the plane for each airline.  It helps you determine the best seats by highlighting which seats have the most room, which seats don’t recline, which have issues such as being too close to restrooms, and other annoyances that can make travel less pleasant.

Be sure to open up SeatGuru.com, which is a free service, in another browser window to check when making seat selections.  You’ll be glad you did.

    13.  Don’t overlook the importance of “free”

Breakfast is a particularly high-priced meal in most hotels, and WiFi can also be pricey at $15.00 to $20.00 per day in some locations.  Some hotel chains offer free breakfast and free WiFi, sometimes just for those who are members of their rewards programs, so be sure to do your homework.  Checked bag fees can mount up too, so take the time to look for airlines that offer free checked bags.

Saving on breakfast, WiFi access, and baggage costs can save you hundreds on a single business trip.

Kyoto Chosen as No. 1 Destination by U. S. Travel Magazine

    Travel + Leisure

Japan s ancient capital Kyoto proved popular in another poll of the world s cities, topping a list of the world s best destinations in a survey of readers in Travel + Leisure magazine.

Kyoto jumped four places from last year, unseating Bangkok from the top spot in the magazine s 2014 World’s Best Awards list. The result followed the Kyoto s recent top 10 ranking in a list of the most livable cities .

Travel + Leisure noted that the attraction of Japan s ancient capital went beyond its cherry blossoms, temples and gardens.

One can also find “reimagined ryokan (Japanese-style hotels) and an emerging style scene that is cutting edge,” said a magazine correspondent in a video clip posted on the magazine s website.

The survey gave scores to each city based on votes received from readers. Poll participants were asked to judge destinations on a variety of factors including culture, arts, food and value for money.

Respondents were screened to remove travel-industry professionals from the vote, according to the magazine s website.

Tokyo didn’t make the top 10, but was ranked fourth among Asian cities behind Kyoto, Siem Reap in Cambodia and Bangkok.

“I am deeply moved and happy” that Kyoto was picked as the best destination in the world, Kyoto Mayor Daisaku Kadokawa said in a statement. The mayor said the outcome was a result of coordination between the public and the corporate sector to improve the city’s appeal for tourists.

“We hope to continue offering visitors the experience of Kyoto’s unique culture, arts, sights and hospitality,” Mr. Kadokawa said.

The ancient capital ranked No. 9 in a list of the World’s Most Livable Cities compiled by London-based magazine Monocle last month.

Two Air France flights from U.S. diverted by bomb threats

Emergency personnel are shown on the tarmac at Salt Lake City International Airport in this photograph taken by passenger Keith Rosso from a seat inside Air France flight 65, November 17, 2015.

    Reuters/Keith Rosso/Handout via Reuters T

Singapore Airlines flight from U.S. lands safely amid bomb threat

SINGAPORE Singapore Airlines said on Sunday there was a bomb threat to one of its flights which originated from San Francisco and landed safely at Singapore’s Changi Airport on Sunday.

The airline, in a statement, did not provide any details of how the threat came to light or what action was taken to ensure the flight’s safety. It said the matter had been referred to the authorities.

“We regret we are unable to provide details as it concerns security,” the airline statement said.

Flight SQ001 landed safely at about noon Singapore time (0400 GMT), but disembarkation was delayed until around 1.30 pm, state-owned Channel NewsAsia reported.

Singapore police said in a statement they had conducted security checks and nothing suspicious was found on the plane or among its passengers.

The incident came as a Turkish Airlines flight bound for Turkey from New York was diverted to Halifax, Canada, after a bomb threat, Canadian police said on Sunday.

Security officials have been on high alert since Islamic State militants claimed responsibility for attacks this month in Paris that killed 130 people.

Why 2015 Is Great for U. S. Travel to Europe –

Why 2015 Is Great for U.S. Travel to Europe

The economy favors American tourists as vacation time is at a four-decade low.

Americans, tired of the winter cold, will have an easier time vacationing in warmer climates in 2015 thanks to strong jobs growth. dropping oil prices and moves by regulators in the U.S. and Europe that may continue the dollar’s rising value against the euro.

The U.S. dollar on Friday was worth 0.84 euros, a rise in the exchange rate compared with a value of 0.73 euros on the same day in 2014, giving Americans more spending power when they travel to Europe. That trend is likely to continue in 2015, and is quite a reversal of fortunes for the euro that once enjoyed a much higher value against the dollar, says Jacob Funk Kirkegaard, a senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics.

“A couple of years ago Europeans would come to New York City and shop like crazy, but soon that could be the other way around,” Kirkegaard says. “I think the euro is going to decline further.”

This currency change is likely in part because U.S. and European economies are heading in different directions when it comes to controlling the supply of money through a process known as quantitative easing, which affects the value of currency. The European Central Bank governors reviewed options for quantitative easing during their meeting on Wednesday and are likely to announce a form of that policy during their meeting on Jan. 22, Kirkegaard predicts.

The U.S. Federal Reserve, in contrast, ended quantitative easing through government bond-buying in October and is expected to raise interest rates around June. This would encourage foreign investment in the dollar and raise the value of U.S. currency at the same time the value of the euro may shrink. With this change in currency values, countries such as Spain, Greece and Italy will become more inviting for Americans, since those nations have been enduring economic hardship, but are also warm locales with popular shopping, beaches and historic tourism sites.

Workers in the U.S. are overdue for a vacation after toiling to recover from the Great Recession. Americans are taking less time off than any point in the last four decades, averaging only 16 vacation days off in 2013, compared with an average of 20.3 days in 2000, according to a study conducted by the Oxford Economics for the U.S. Travel Association. The study conducted in October showed Americans failed to use a total of $52.4 billion worth of paid time off in 2013.

The recent plunge in oil prices to their lowest level since 2009 will also likely help Americans save at the gas pump and lead airline companies to charge less for overseas flights, according to data compiled by travel service Expedia and the Airlines Reporting Corporation.

“Another factor, especially in Europe, is the rise of low-cost carriers, which ‘unbundle’ amenities, and force the big-name carriers to do the same in order to compete,” according to the report published by Expedia. “Peak travel season to Europe starts in May…the best time to book international tickets is 171 days out, or a little less than six months ahead. Americans on average tend to book 31-90 days prior to Europe travel.”

European companies might also offer discounts to boost tourism in the wake of the recent terrorist attack in Paris against French journalists, says Jeffrey Eslinger, vice president of the Travel and Tourism Research Association.

“A slightly stronger dollar coupled with lower airfares during the shoulder and off-peak times make traveling to Europe more attractive than it has been in sometime,” Eslinger says. “If there are continued terror threats and related activity in Western Europe, we may also see some discounting to stimulate travel.”
