Traveling the World for 9 Months on Under $10,000

Written by Wilson Cusack

Last January I was in my senior year of high school and, after finishing my college applications, decided to begin exploring alternative options for the next year. I had a desire to see and understand the world’s problems for myself, and a deeper religious obligation to be a part of the solutions. That, set alongside the realization that the people and organizations I wanted to work with were only an email away, was enough to get me searching.

After looking at different options, I was accepted to a fellowship that would facilitate an entire gap-year for me. I was excited about it, but it seemed to be sort of a backwards fellowship, one in which I had to pay them: to the tune of around $20,000.

After several conversations I came to the realization that I could put together my own “gap-year”, work with people and organizations whom I personally chose, and do it all for much cheaper than $20,000. It’s that effort that I’m now trying to chronicle, to encourage and counsel the other people thinking about taking on the great unknown of opportunity.

To keep it as true to what as you might expect on your own trip, I’ve included almost all of the total costs of the trip: all the groceries, restaurants, random charges I can’t remember, metro cards, leisure travel; almost everything. I figure if you do your own gap year, you’ll end up pursuing as many random adventures as I did and so I want to keep the figures as realistic as possible. The only things I’ve not included are things that were particular to me, such as costs of camera equipment I needed to pick-up for work along the way and gifts for friends back home.

I began the trip in Guatemala, working in the communities around the garbage dump in Guatemala City with Potter’s House. an indigenous partner of a US based organization, endPoverty.

I was connected to endPoverty through a friend who recommended and introduced me to them. At first they were very hesitant, to say the least. They’d never taken anyone straight out of high school, and I’d be the first volunteer they’d ever sent to their partner in Guatemala. But after several interviews, both over the phone and in person, they agreed to take me on.

Before moving to Guatemala City, though, I wanted to brush up on my Spanish, as I’d only taken it for two years in high school and had forgotten most of it (thinking, “When am I ever going to use this?” Oops). So I first spent two weeks in Antigua, Guatemala studying Spanish six hours a day, five days a week at a language school there.

Once in Guatemala City with Potter’s House, I spent one day a week working with the micro-finance team, three days a week working with the international marketing team, and one day teaching English to sixth graders.

August – November, Guatemala

How Much Birth Control Would Cost Under The AHCA #birth #control,

#

Here’s How Much Your Birth Control May Cost Under AHCA

Like Us On Facebook

The American Health Care Act. the GOP health care plan that aims to repeal and replace Obamacare, has narrowly passed in the House, and currently awaits a vote in the Senate.

The controversial bill has been met with considerable pushback, as it would ultimately leave 24 million Americans without health insurance by 2026, according to an analysis from the Congressional Budget Office.

Should the legislation pass, women are poised to face especially complex challenges when it comes to accessing birth control, which has been covered by Obamacare thanks to the “birth control benefit .”

The Affordable Care Act requires insurance plans to cover all Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved methods of birth control for women without having to pay any out-of-pocket costs.

Under the AHCA, however, women would no longer be able to reap any of those benefits.

While Republicans may view a woman’s access to birth control as a “nitty-gritty detail ” in crafting health care legislation, any woman of child-bearing age can assure you the issue is far from trivial.

Let’s talk about how much each contraceptive method actually costs when you pay out-of-pocket.

While the prices vary depending on the circumstances, for most brands, a pack of birth control pills (which typically provides a month’s worth of contraception) can cost as much as $50 .

However, it’s important to remember that only 17 percent of women who use a form of birth control are taking the pill.

The intrauterine device, or IUD, is another commonly used method, though it demands a much steeper price out-of-pocket.

Popular IUD brands like Mirena and Kyleena can cost anywhere between $500 and over $800 .

Similarly, a birth control implant can set you back $800 without insurance .

Unfortunately, the prices aren’t much kinder on your wallet as you make your way through the rest of the viable birth control options. Without insurance, you could pay up to $250 for the Depo-Provera shot. and $80 a month for the Nuvaring .

Mind you, these costs don’t even factor in the doctors’ visits to obtain these prescriptions, nor the follow-up visits, all of which do not come free without insurance.

So, what about Planned Parenthood?

Fortunately, clinics like Planned Parenthood provide amazing resources to women seeking forms of contraception but lack the health insurance to pay for it.

Not so fortunately, the latest version of AHCA plans to nix federal funding of the organization and bar patients from using any Medicaid dollars to access treatment at Planned Parenthood clinics.

To put this in perspective, in 2015, approximately 43 percent of Planned Parenthood’s budget. or around $500 million, came from federal grants and reimbursements, according to NPR.

Moreover, 60 percent of Planned Parenthood’s federal funding comes from Medicaid and Title X reimbursements for preventative and primary care, which includes not only birth control, but cancer screenings. as well.

Even if the AHCA manages to garner enough votes in the Senate, this does not mean Planned Parenthood will vanish overnight.

But they will lose a huge chunk of their funds, and we as patients could see an extremely alarming drop in the quality of their services.

Plus, according to the Government Accountability Office, approximately 390,000 women could lose access to preventative care. and as many as 650,000 women would receive reduced preventative care.

Cecile Richards, president of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, discussed the potential impact of the GOP health care plan in the following statement:

This is the worst bill for women’s health in a generation. This disastrous legislation once again makes being a woman a pre-existing condition; ‘defunds’ Planned Parenthood; guts maternity coverage; strips 24 million of their health insurance; lets insurance companies charge people with pre-existing conditions exorbitant rates; forces new moms back to work shortly after giving birth; and reduces access to contraception.

In short, this bill makes it harder to prevent unintended pregnancy, harder to have a healthy pregnancy, and harder to raise a family. Alarm bells should be ringing in every house across America.

Richards urges the Senate to “ listen to the American people and reject the worst bill for women’s health in a generation.”

While it’s up to your health care provider whether or not to cover birth control, and some states, like New York. have made a plan to continue making coverage mandatory, the Trump administration has made it painfully clear that women’s health is at the bottom of their priority list.

Colorado DUI – DWI Laws – Enforcement #colorado #dui, #colorado #dwi,

#

DUI DWI in Colorado

Defining the Crime

Colorado has two levels of alcohol-related driving offenses, and both are based on the measurement of blood alcohol concentration (BAC) in the body.

  • Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol or Drugs (DUI).
  • Driving While Ability is Impaired (DWAI).

Colorado BAC Limits

Simply put, blood alcohol concentration is how much alcohol is pulsing through your blood after you drink.

The legal limit BAC for drivers over 21 years old is 0.08%, while the limit for drivers under 21 years old is 0.02%.

DWAI has a limit of 0.05%.

Administrative Penalties

In Colorado the Division of Motor Vehicles has the legal authority to suspend your license for DUI and DWAI regardless of any criminal charges you may face through the court s. These penalties, known as Administrative Penalties, can cause an automatic suspension of your driver’s license as well as fees and points depending on the offense.

DWAI 1st Offense: 8 points toward license suspension; $200 to $500 fine; up to 180 days in jail; up to 48 hours community service.

DUI 1st Offense: Administrative license revocation for 9 months; $600 to $1,000 fine; up to 1 year in jail; up to 96 hours community service; alcohol education.

DUI/DWAI 1st offense under 21 years old: Drivers license suspended 3 months and 4 points added to driving record.

The penalties increase substantially for repeated offenses and, in some cases, you may be required to install an ignition interlock device on your car. The only way to challenge Administrative penalties is to request an alcohol hearing.

Alcohol Hearings

You have 7 days after receiving a revocation/suspension notice to request a hearing. You must go in person to the DMV to put in a request. You will also be required to turn over your license if you did not do so at the time of the violation. You may also be eligible for a temporary driving permit while you wait for your hearing. For more information about alcohol hearings please call Customer Service at (303) 205-5613 or the Department of Revenue’s Hearings Division at (303) 205-5606

An Arrest

  • If you fail the roadside sobriety test, which could entail anything from standing on one leg while answering a barrage of questions to touching your nose and walking a straight line, you will be read your rights.
  • You will be handcuffed and taken to a city or county jail.
  • A tow truck will take your car and impound it.

Criminal Penalties

The CDOT offers a line item assessment in an informative brochure of what a DUI costs the individual charged with a first offense. The total comes to over $10,000 and includes lawyer fees, rising insurance rates, fees to get a license back, probation supervision fees, all the way down to the brain injury surcharge and court costs. This figure is based on the minimum fine. It is easy to see that drinking and driving is not worth any cost.

Refusing a BAC Test

Express Consent Law: By operating a motor vehicle in the state of Colorado you are automatically giving “express consent” or granting permission to be administered a chemical test by breath, blood, or urine to measure your blood alcohol content. If a law enforcement officer requires you to take a test because of suspected drinking and driving and you refuse, you will be required to have an Ignition Interlock for 2 years. As of January 1st 2014 refusing a chemical test automatically gets you a Persistent Drunk Driver designation.

Zero Tolerance: Drivers under 21 years old with a BAC between 0.02% and 0.05% face automatic revocation of their license.

Buy and Possess: If you are under 21 years old and get caught with alcohol in the vehicle, you will have your license revoked.

For more information on DUIs and BAC consult the Colorado Driver Handbook or visit the Department of Transportation website.

Ignition Interlock Device

You may be allowed an early reinstatement after an Administrative license suspension by having a Ignition Interlock Device (IID) installed in your vehicle. This can only be done after serving a portion of your suspension. The length of time depends on the type and number of violations. You must also:

  • Over 21 years old at the time of the violation.
  • Satisfied all requirements for reinstatement.
  • Completed at least 1 month of a a DUI conviction or Administrative driver’s license suspension. OR
  • Completed at least 2 months for a Refusal of a BAC test.

The annual cost for an IID is about $1,000. The IID MUST be installed and maintained by a state approved vendor in order to be valid. If you wish to know if you may be eligible for an early reinstatement with an IID you can call Customer Service at (303) 205-5613.

Driver’s License Reinstatement

Once your suspension time is completed, with or without an IID, the DMV will send you a letter with steps to take to purchase an Unrestricted License. Before you are able to get a new license you must complete all the conditions of your suspension including all fees and program classes required. When you are eligible for a new license you will be required to fill out a Application for Reinstatement (Form DR 2870) and a Certification (Form DR 2598). You will also have to pay the $95 reinstatement fee and show proof of insurance (SR 22) for up to 3 years. The length a SR 22 is required will depend on the type and number of violations.

Forms

You must submit this form to the Division of Motor Vehicles when you apply to reinstate your CO driver s license after suspension for a DUI OR refusing a chemical test.

Under Slab Leak Repair #under #slab #leak #repair,under #slab #plumbing,under #slab

Under Slab Leak

Under Slab leak problems worried your home might be at risk?

Expansive clay soils in regions like Texas and Oklahoma are notorious for causing foundation damage nightmares for homeowners. As the climate changes, soils expand and contract which can result in leaks that form deep underneath the home s foundation. Plumbing leaks like these are known as under slab leaks .

In addition to foundation movement, other causes of under slab plumbing leaks include :

  • Cast iron pipes that have corroded over time
  • Tree roots that penetrate or disrupt pipes
  • Improper foundation adjustment or repair

Signs You Need Under Slab Leak Repair

The tricky part about an under slab leak is that there s usually no easy way for a homeowner to know if he or she has a problem. Unlike a typical plumbing leak where homeowners can detect red flags, leaks under the concrete aren t easily monitored and occur several feet underneath the surface.

Unfortunately for homeowners, this means that the first visible sign of a slab leak is usually structural damage like uneven floors, cracks in walls, and/or doors that drag against the floor. If you re lucky, you may be tipped off by the sound of running water when no fixtures are being used or discover mildew underneath floor coverings – surefire signs you need to check for an under slab plumbing leak.

The good news is that there are slab leak detection tests available to identify problems. If you live in an area that is prone to foundation movement, the need to test for an under slab leak should not be ignored. In fact, 1 in 4 homes we test in areas like Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Longview, Waco, Nashville, Oklahoma City and Tulsa have concrete slab leaks.

Worried about a wet slab? Here are some good times to perform slab leak detection:

  • Before undergoing foundation repair
  • After foundation work
  • At the sign of foundation problems
  • If you discover excessively moist areas underneath floor coverings
  • If you hear running water when water should not be in use (usually emanating from the bathroom)
  • Unusually high water bills
  • Before purchasing a new home
  • At least once annually (in climates prone to foundation cracks)

How does under slab leak detection work?

In order to indentify a potential slab plumbing leak, Olshan uses a process known as Hydrostatic testing. This process uses an inflatable test ball that is inserted into the main sewer line under the perimeter beam. The ball is then inflated to block off the system. Then, the entire system is filled with water. At this point water levels are monitored for loss for up to 20 minutes. If the sewer lines are unable to be filled or lose water – we know an under slab leak exists.

In the case that a leak is found, a leak isolation test should be performed to determine its location. A leak isolation test uses a special camera to locate the leak. During this test the sewer system is divided into sections and inspected using the camera. This process is repeated until all systems, branches and fixtures have been tested. From here the extent of the damage can be assessed and a cost-effective solution can be determined.

What is a sewer clean out?

A sewer clean out is a plumbing pipe, typically sticking out of the ground that has a removable plug and is found in the main sewer line. This pipe allows plumbers to clear out a blockage which may accumulate in the system and can also be used as an entry point during the slab leak detection phase.

So what happens if you have leak? Here s what you can expect if you require under slab leak repair .

Denver DUI Attorney #denver, #dui, #defense, #attorney, #lawyer, #driving #under #the

#

A DUI conviction in Denver Colorado can affect some professionals more than others. These are professions that require a special license or certification that can be in jeopardy if you are convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs such as:

Denver DUI
Attorney Reviews

Throughout the entire case, Mr. Churchill was highly professional and compassionate. The case was a very difficult one from a legal standpoint and through his knowledge of the law he was able to get an unexpectedly excellent result.
– KC

I was very impressed with how Mr. Churchill handled my case. He obviously cared about getting a good result for me. When I heard him talk about my case, I got confident that he would get a good result, but never expected the case would get completely dismissed.
– AW

Denver DUI Attorney

The defense of a Denver DUI requires experience in a very specialized field. In addition to being well versed in evidentiary law. criminal law. and constitutional law. a good DUI attorney in Denver must understand the science behind your blood alcohol test. and have the experience to understand how the Denver police make DUI arrests. With 14 years of experience, Kevin Churchill has represented hundreds of clients in Colorado that have been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Experience in the field allows Mr. Churchill to uncover the weaknesses in the evidence against you. Every case is different, but the goal is always the same.

To minimize the impact a DUI arrest has on your life by reducing the charges against you or having the charges dropped altogether.

Kevin Churchill provides aggressive defense to all DUI charges in Denver and the surrounding Colorado counties. He is dedicated to protecting those accused of drunk driving in Colorado from unnecessary convictions and criminal penalties. Our clients do not plead guilty when a better outcome can be obtained. DUI and DWAI convictions can have life-changing consequences beyond the criminal court penalties involved. Those charged with DUI in Denver are typically everyday people such as commercial truck drivers or anyone else that must drive in order to make a living and support their family.

Colorado DUI laws have recently changed to include more severe penalties for those convicted of driving under the influence. It is more important than ever to have an expert DUI attorney when you have been charged with a drunk driving offense. Any offense that occurred after July 1, 2010 has increased mandatory minimum jail sentences attached, as well as the possible revocation of your driver’s license. Mr. Churchill has represented those charged with DUI or DWAI in hundreds of cases. He handles cases throughout the Front Range and eastern Colorado. Please call our office immediately if you are facing charges, and by all means, do not plead guilty until an experienced attorney has thoroughly reviewed all aspects of your case.

The consequences for a DUI conviction can include both lengthy jail sentences as well as the loss of your privilege to drive. Even first offenses carry a 9 month revocation of your driver’s license — and mandatory jail if your blood alcohol content is very high. Our first objective is to help you avoid a conviction altogether, and if that cannot be done, then to help you avoid unreasonably harsh penalties in Denver courts and at the Colorado DMV .

The Cost of a DUI in Denver, Colorado
There are hefty court costs, fines, probation costs, alcohol treatment costs, increased insurance premiums, lost job opportunities, and so on. The fee that you will pay to have expert legal representation can be small by comparison. Drunk driving is a criminal offense, but with the added complexity of having scientific evidence that is unique to these types of cases. This is why it is best to hire a lawyer that specializes in DUI defense cases. Many people incorrectly assume that there is no chance to beat the case against them. It requires someone well-versed in this specialized field of law to help you determine if a conviction can be avoided in your particular case. Rarely are those breaks in the prosecutor’s case apparent to someone who does not regularly practice law in this field. When a conviction cannot be avoided, it will help a great deal to have an attorney work to minimize the penalties that you will face in court – especially on second or subsequent offenses.

The defense of your case will involve many layers of analysis, beginning with the constitutionality, or legality, of your traffic stop (or contact from the police for whatever reason). If the police did not have reasonable suspicion or probable cause to stop you to begin with, then all of the evidence against you must be thrown out. If the evidence is legally admissible against you – then the analysis turns to the reliability and credibility of the evidence itself. With field sobriety tests being given incorrectly, breath machines committing testing errors, police failing to follow procedures, and evidence being improperly collected – many of those charged with DUI simply accept a conviction when there are DUI defense arguments .

Your guilt or innocence under Colorado DUI law rests on evidence that must be closely examined before you plead guilty to any drug or alcohol driving offense. The penalties for a DUI conviction are too great to ignore the possibility that the evidence against you is wrong. Experienced drunk driving defense involves never accepting the evidence on its face. We will scrutinize the evidence that other lawyers may assume can’t be defeated, because we understand that DUI evidence is much more complicated than meets the eye. Please give our office a call. Mr. Churchill will directly answer any questions you may have regarding your case, and give you advice about what you should do to protect your criminal record and your driver’s license.

We offer some advice about what to do when you have been pulled over on our page entitled DUI Arrest Advice. However, most people come to our website after they have already been arrested, and are now looking for advice on what steps to take to protect themselves:

The Steps You Should Take After You Have Been Arrested:

  1. Do not make any statements to the police. In fact, it is better to hand them your driver’s license and other identification than it is to speak when they ask who you are. Certainly, the officer is going to note in his report that you had slurred speech – even in cases where you did not.
  2. Request a Colorado DMV hearing within seven days of taking a breath test or within seven days of refusing to take the test. In blood test cases, request a DMV hearing as soon as you are notified by the DMV of a pending license revocation. Always ask for the officer to be present.
  3. Retain an experienced Denver DUI lawyer to evaluate your case before the first court date, or the DMV hearing date. The sooner you hire a lawyer, the better, since it may take some time to answer the necessary questions of your particular case.
  4. Do not plead guilty, or assume that you are guilty. Contrary to what most people think, there are DUI defense arguments that can be used in most cases. DUI and DUID cases involve very complex evidence that must be collected by the police in a lawful manner, as well as a scientifically valid manner. Experienced representation is the only way to discover if the police, and the prosecution, have what they need to convict you.

Kevin Churchill has 14 years of experience providing DUI and DMV hearing defense representation in all Denver metro area courts. Kevin Churchill offers experienced defense for all DUI related charges, as well as all criminal charges related to the DUI case, including felony drug possession, domestic violence, and assault.

Incurring a DUI Charge in California

It is imperative that you seek legal counsel from the best DUI lawyer in your area after being charged with driving under the influence in the state of California. A top lawyer knows the ins and outs of the DUI laws in the state and will represent you to the fullest ability. Don’t get stuck having to pay exorbitant fines, having your license revoked or undergoing community service; the expert DUI lawyer you choose from our network will ensure that your charges are dropped or dismissed. Call today to get your DWI claim underway.

Dealing with a driving under the influence charge in California is not easy. Even first time offenders don’t get off very easily and are hit with severe penalties. The most difficult aspect about incurring a DUI in the state is that DWI laws can vary greatly from city to city. However, California as a whole is tightening the reins on DWI punishments.

As of this year, motorists will have larger penalties when it comes to driver’s license suspension and revocation. The state also has employed a “no tolerance” policy for anyone who is caught driving under the influence under the age of 18 and for repeat drunk driving offenders. If you have incurred a DUI in California, the best thing to do would be to hire an elite team of Los Angeles DUI lawyers to help you fight your charges, and we are here to ensure you partner up with your ideal paralegal.

General Laws in California

The state of California has very strict penalties for DUI offenders that are minors, offenders under 21 years of age and for repeat offenders. Laws in California state that a motorist may be charged with driving under the influence (DUI) if any of the following circumstances are present:

• If you are under the age of 21 and are operating a vehicle after consuming alcoholic beverages. Persons under 21 may not have any alcoholic substances in their vehicle when driving alone. (Exceptions may be made for work-related driving).
• If you are under the age of 21 and your BAC level is .01 percent or higher.
• If you are under the age of 21 and are driving after having consumed alcohol in any form. This includes prescription drugs and over the counter medications.
• If you are over the age of 21 and your BAC level is .08 percent or higher.
• If you are a commercial driver with a BAC level of .04 percent or higher
• If you are under the age of 18 and have ANY measurable blood alcohol concentration.
• If you are a repeat offender and your BAC level is at .01 percent or higher.

How DUI Offenders are Penalized in California

If you have incurred a DUI in California and are found guilty, the following are the punishments that you may be issued:

Repeat Offenders

California has a zero tolerance police for repeat DUI offenders. As such, the maximum possible penalty for driving under the influence may be issued to motorists who are convicted. Repeat Los Angeles DUI offenders may be denied application for a restricted license as well. The state of California takes all previous charges into account when issuing penalties for a new one. This may lead to a motorist being charged with a misdemeanor or felony DWI. All repeat DUI punishments are also affected by where the driver was issued the charge as well as the driver’s BAC level at the time of arrest.

Recent Amendments to California DUI Laws

As of 2011, California DWI laws have expanded the number of categories by which the Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) can immediately suspend driving privileges when the motorist is suspected of driving under the influence.

As of 2010, California law requires the mandatory installation of ignition interlock devices. The state also shortened the time period in which driving penalties are restricted, including those for repeat offenders. In order for the penalty period to be shortened, motorists must pay all required fees and file an SR-22 insurance form.

California Assembly Bill 91 – Requires that ignition interlock device manufacturers provide information to the Department of Motor Vehicles. Also requires the DMV to establish a pilot program in Alameda, Los Angeles, Sacramento and Tulare that requires a driver to install an interlock ignition device and to participate in alcohol and drug assessment programs.

California Assembly Bill 1165 (Zero Tolerance Law For Repeat Offenders) – Makes it unlawful for a motorist under probation for a violation to operate a motor vehicle with a BAC level of .01 percent or higher.

California Senate Bill 1190 (Ignition Interlock Devices) – Lowers the minimum BAC level at the time of arrest to allow a motorist to install an ignition interlock device on their vehicle as well as prohibits said motorist from operating the vehicle without the device.

California Senate Bill 1388 (Interlock Devices) – Effective July 2009, requires motorists to install an ignition interlock device immediately on their vehicles following conviction of violating DUI provisions as well as driving under a suspended/revoked license due to DUI-related convictions. The number of violations will determine the time period in which the device must remain installed.

California Assembly Bill 2802 (Reckless Driving) – Court must order DWI convict to participate in a program related to DUI education and treatment. Probation will be revoked if motorist does not enroll in the program.

California SR-22 Insurance Click here for SR-22 Insurance

If you have been convicted of drunk driving in California, you may be required to obtain a California SR-22 insurance policy. Also known as a California Proof of Insurance Certificate,” the SR-22 form is not a type of insurance, but a form of proof that you have certain types of insurance. It is filed by the driver’s insurance company to the state DMV stating that auto liability insurance is in effect for the motorist. It is typically required after a motorist has been charged with DWI, a number of other traffic offices, or an accident in Los Angeles, San Diego or San Francisco.

In California, if your license is suspended you are allowed to obtain a restricted license by the court, for which an SR-22 form may be required. If your auto insurance is cancelled, you will need to file for a new insurance plan within 45 days.

How to fly on a private jet for under $150 per

#book a cheap flight
#

CateyHill

No security lines or TSA pat downs. Cushy leather seats and legroom for days. Fido curled up right next to you. The perks of flying on a private jet used to be something only the rich and famous enjoyed. But that’s changing — and in some cases, you can fly on a private jet or plane for the cost of coach (or less) if you know how to shop smartly.

A handful of sites and private jet companies are following the lead of hotels and hotel websites and offering last-minute deals on unused inventory, and others are changing the cost structure of private plane travel to make it vastly more affordable.

JetSuite.com. which flies to more than 2,000 airports, aggregates private jet flights with empty seats to offer daily “next-day” deals. You can rent the entire plane — a max of 6 seats — starting at just $536 each way, which shakes out to less than $90 per person. Past deals have included a flight for six people from Oxford, Conn. to Philadelphia for $536.43 (that’s about $90 per person, which includes the 7.5% federal excise tax), a flight for four people from Los Angeles to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, for $499 (that’s about $124 per person); for four people from Orange County, Calif. to Chicago for $536 (that’s about $135 per person); and for six people from Teterboro (in New Jersey, near New York City) to Nassau, Bahamas, for $1,074 (that’s about $179 per person). (In all of the above cases, to get the per person rate, you must book all seats on the plane.)

It’s not the only company offering these kinds of rates: Consumers may also get big last-minute deals, even when they aren’t advertised, by calling a private aviation company within a few days from when they want to depart and asking whether they have deals going on.

Waiting until the last minute isn’t an option for most travelers, of course. For those whose schedules can’t accommodate a last-minute booking, there are other options, though they can be pricier. West Coast airline Surf Air offers unlimited private plane flights to and from roughly a dozen California and Nevada locales like Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and Santa Barbara for $1,750 per month (plus a one-time $1000 initiation fee); the airline operates up to 90 flights each day and it added Monterey, Calif. to its list of itineraries on July 13, 2015.

Those living on the East Coast will soon be able to fly with Beacon. another monthly membership airline, which will begin flying later this summer, starting with 18-20 daily flights between New York and Boston, as well as seasonally in the Hamptons and Nantucket. Memberships start at $2,000 per month (plus a $1000 initiation fee, which will be waived if you join before Sept. 1, 2015).

For some, the math works out: if you take four or more flights on one of these airlines, those tickets could amount to less than the cost of coach or business class seats.

And FLITE Air Taxi offers a la carte private plane flights for reasonable rates: A flight from Boston to Saratoga, N.Y. costs $541 per person (you will need six people to fill the plane, so $3,250 for the whole flight), as does one from New York City to Martha’s Vineyard and from Block Island to Worcester, Mass.; this does not include federal excise taxes (7.5% of the cost of the flight) but does include other fees.

How can these and other similar companies afford to offer such low rates? One reason is that sites like JetSuite.com are offering seats on flights that would have been empty or at least not full. “Over 40% of flights that are flying private have empty seats,” says Steve King, the co-founder of private jet charter company AeroIQ. Many times, these flights are simply repositioning so they can pick up passengers in another city and the companies would rather get some money from passengers than no money.

Companies like Surf Air and FLITE Air Taxi can charge less than big-name competitors, in part, because they use different planes — like, for example, single-prop turbo planes — that cost less to operate because they use less fuel than larger jets. “The operational cost can be a fraction of other planes,” says Justin Hart, vice president of Surf Air memberships.

There are some significant additional caveats to discount private plane travel. Often these deals are only for one-way flights, so they will then need to find an alternative way back. It’s also important to understand that there may be extra fees added to the cost of your flight — such as airport or landing fees — so read the contract to determine what’s included and what’s not. De-icing fees, for example, can be significant and may be passed on to consumers, says Jeff Trance, the SVP of private jets for the U.S. for jet charter company Air Partner .

And typically, you can’t just buy one discount ticket on these planes; they’ll want you to pay for the whole cost of the plane, so you’ll need to find a group to go with you to get the most savings. Plus, if you want to save big, you likely won’t get a brand-new primo jet, as these tend to cost more. And finally, there’s the issue of safety: Private chartered planes tend to get in more crashes than commercial jets — though they are still far safer than cars. Most small-plane accidents were due to pilot error, so call the private jet company to determine how many hours of flying experience your pilot has.

Despite these downsides, the allure of private plane travel is strong thanks to how uncomfortable both the airport and flying experience have become. Here are some ways to save.

If you’re flexible both on when you fly and where you fly, you’ll likely get the best deals, says Trance. Call the company and ask about the cost differences between, say, a Saturday and a Tuesday and see if you can fly into a nearby airport. Fridays and Sundays tend to be the most expensive times to travel, says Justin Sullivan, the co-founder of FLITE Air Taxi. And, of course, last-minute deals can be significant so it may be worth waiting until about 72 hours before you want to fly to find deals, says Trance, though this is, of course, risky.

Know where the most likely deals are

The Northeast markets, California and the Northeast-to-Florida routes tend to have the most last-minute deals on them, says Bob Diener, co-founder of Hotels.com and Getaroom.com.

Diener recommends checking out FlyVictor.com, as it compares the cost of private jet travel across different airlines. He says that JetSuite.com is the best known for last-minute deals. You may also want to consider having a broker do the heavy lifting for you, says Trance; brokers typically work on commission, so ask them what their commission is before booking and how you pay it, and tell them your all-in price tolerance ahead of time.

Go with a small group — but not too small

Trance says that if you travel with a group of seven or fewer you can often save significantly because you can opt for a smaller — and often less-expensive-to-operate — plane. You likely don’t want a party of two because most private aviation companies require you to rent out the entire private plane (typically four seats or more).

Village Royale Holiday Home, Calangute, India from £5.50pppn

Set in a peaceful location just 1 km from the popular beach resort of Calangute in Goa, India, this is probably the cheapest place in Paradise.

The hotel is basic and quite dated, but the staff are reputed to be helpful and it does have its own pool.  It’s a little worrying that the hotel claims to be an ideal retreat for mature travellers and its postal address is a nursing home, but hopefully that s just a strange coincidence.

Compare rates for Village Royale Holiday Home in Goa for chosen dates

Hotel Sayang Maha Mertha, Bali, Indonesia from £3.80pppn

Forget staying for under a tenner, at the Hotel Sayang Maha Mertha in Bali, you can stay for less than £4 per night, making it one of the cheapest hotels in Indonesia, if not the entire world.  The hotel is walking distance from Kuta Beach and the staff are generally found to be friendly and helpful, but don t expect too much for this price.  If a cheap bed for the night is all you need, then go for it.

Also in Bali is Nick’s Pension, which is much more comfortable and located close to many of Bali s main attractions in Ubud, but it is more than twice the price with double rooms costing around £20 per night so it just depends how thin your shoestring is.

Compare rates for Hotel Sayang Maha in Bali for chosen dates…

Demel Hotel, Kraków, Poland from £8.75pppn

A short taxi ride away from the attractive historic city centre of Kraków is a pleasant four-star (yes 4 star!!) hotel with double rooms available for less than £20 per night.

Some guests have reported that some of the hotel s facilities such as the swimming pool and gym are not always open, which may explain the low room rates, but if you want a comfortable hotel in Kraków then you won t get much better value than this.

Compare room rates at Demel Hotel now

Sunstyle Suites, Orlando, USA from £9.50pppn

Easy to reach from the main highways and just a few miles from the many famous theme parks and attractions in Orlando, Sunstyle Suites is ideal for anyone seeking a cheap holiday in Florida.  The rooms are pleasant and well equipped with cable TV and free wireless Internet, and kitchen facilities are available for those who want to self cater.

Compare rates for Sunstyle Suites in Orlando for your selected dates now

El Cortez Hotel, Las Vegas, USA from £7 pppn

The El Cortez Hotel in the historic downtown area of Las Vegas is a convenient place to stay and has excellent reviews from guests, with the general consensus being that it s not just good because it s cheap, but that it is actually good.  In fact, it s won many awards including 2009 Best Downtown Hotel from the Las Vegas Review.

Like many hotels in Las Vegas, the El Cortez Hotel clearly hopes that you ll lose a lot more money than the £14 you re playing for a double room, with plenty of gambling tables and slot machines within the hotel helping to fund their US$25million renovation project.

Compare El Cortez Hotel rates for selected dates now

The World`s Cheapest Hotels

So it s clear that you really can travel the world on a shoestring, with plenty of hotels for under a tenner available if you look hard enough, and what s more, they re not all smelly hostels in dubious parts of the world, but genuinely decent and in some cases really good places to stay.

Obviously, room rates vary depending on what you book and when you book, but Hotels Fairy’s hotel price comparison search tool is always here to help you find the best rates on hotels for your travels, so do check at the time of booking.

Whether you stay at any of the hotels listed above, or choose to stay at any other cheap hotel around the world, it s always a good idea to look at other guests reviews to find out if it is a genuine bargain or if there is some less attractive reason why it s cheap.

If you found any other cheap hotels that are unbelievable value or if you’ve been caught out by a budget nightmare then please do share your experiences in the comments below.

All-inclusive vacations for under $500

Since tracking all of the latest and best travel deals out there is part of my job, the fact that you can get some really amazing deals at all-inclusive resorts right now certainly has not escaped my notice. Pair a rough economic climate with fewer people traveling with hurricane season and you have the makings for some too-good-to-be-true sounding deals on all-inclusive vacations in Mexico and the Caribbean. In fact, Cheap Caribbean is offering up deals on some all-inclusive vacations starting at just $49 per person/nightand that includes not only lodging, but meals, beverages and activities too. All-Inclusive Resorts for $99 or Less

Once you ve picked your jaw off the floor, you ll be astonished again to hear that not only can you get rates at an all-inclusive for just $49/night, but your reservation in Cheap Caribbean also comes with weather-insurance, where you get $100 off coupon on your vacation if it rains. That s right, if it sprinkles even a few drops, Cheap Caribbean will give you $100 back off the price of your vacay. Sounds like a pretty sweet deal to me.

If you want to take advantage of some of these insane deals on all-inclusive vacations and head for Mexico, there is a great deal happening at the three-star Oasis Palm Beach and Spa Resort in Cancun right now. For travel between August 15 and December 20, you can get rates for as little as $49/night or book a 7-night Mexico vacation package with airfare for as little as $499 per person for travel between August 21 and November 30.

I tested Cheap Caribbean to find out if their deal was as hot as they claimed. I found that while booking my travel from my home in Portland, Oregon did add $150 per person to the package deal, I could still be enjoying a 7-night all-inclusive vacation in Cancun (including air travel and all food and drinks) for just $649 per person (based on double occupancy). I tested the fares through several dates and found this to be pretty consistent pricing through the upcoming autumn months.

Plagued by some bad PR this year (first drug wars in border towns, then Swine flu), counting all of the deals to Mexico right now would be like trying to count all of the hairs on your head. In fact, it seems that almost every hotel and resort is offering discounts, free nights or special resort credits through December. Many Mexico hotels have even teamed up and agreed to a flu free guarantee. which says that in the highly unlikely case you get H1N1 A during your trip, you get a free vacation every year for 3 consecutive years for the length of the original stay, as well as additional discounts (this offer almost makes hope I do get swine flu on my trip. What s a few days of feeling sick for 3 free vacations?).
