While many travel-hungry Americans are hard-pressed for time and money, a number of domestic destinations offer scenic beauty and adventure without breaking the bank. Some of the nation s top bargain locations these days are ones people might not expect, from hedonistic havens to quieter yet equally captivating natural sites.

Las Vegas

Las Vegas is no longer an exclusive playground for the rich and famous. In the wake of the recession, Sin City resorts and other businesses are offering significant discounts to lure cash-strapped visitors back to the city. As of 2010, hotels and airfare from the West Coast to Las Vegas cost around $500, although how much you spend in the casinos is another story. Once in Vegas, visitors can take advantage of buffets under $10, such as those at off-strip hotels Fiesta Rancho, Gold Coast and Green Valley Ranch. Some of the city s free entertainment includes the Bellagio fountains show, Fremont Street s massive overhead light display and Treasure Island s pirate show.

Passport Requirements – Ottawa, Canada – Embassy of the United States

Ottawa.Canada

Passport Requirements

Under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative, as of January 23, 2007, citizens of both Canada and the United States were required to present a valid passport at a U.S. Preclearance Facility — located at all major Canadian airports — prior to boarding their flight to the United States. Beginning June 1, 2009, it was established that travelers entering the U.S. through a land or sea border must present a passport or WHTI-compliant document. For more information on the WHTI, click here .

It is strongly recommended that all citizens of both Canada and the United States carry passports when crossing the U.S./Canada border. All persons, whether U.S. Citizens or foreign nationals, must present a valid passport or alternate approved travel document to enter or depart from the United States by air. Additional information is available at the following websites:

Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative

The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) was mandated by Congress in the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 to strengthen border security and facilitate entry into the United States for citizens and legitimate international visitors. WHTI requirements for air travel took effect on 23 January 2007.

Since implementation, U.S. Customs and Border Protection has and will continue to exercise its current authorities in unique circumstances to allow individuals subject to the WHTI requirements into the United States based on other evidence of identity and citizenship.

Travel document security remains a top priority for the U.S. Government. Both the 9/11 Commission and the U.S. Congress urged strengthening of travel documents to prevent entry of terrorists across our borders, reduce use of fraudulent documents, and speed up entry procedures.

Why is United Airlines suing a 22-year-old? Dec. 29, 2014 #svr

Why is United Airlines suing a 22-year-old?

22-year-old Aktarer Zaman founded Skiplagged.com last year.

A young computer whiz from New York City has launched a site to help people buy cheap plane tickets. But an airline company and its travel partner want to shut him down.

The site helps travelers find cheap flights by using a strategy called “hidden city” ticketing.

The idea is that you buy an airline ticket that has a layover at your actual destination. Say you want to fly from New York to San Francisco — you actually book a flight from New York to Lake Tahoe with a layover in San Francisco and get off there, without bothering to take the last leg of the flight.

This travel strategy only works if you book a one-way flight with no checked bags (they would have landed in Lake Tahoe).

It’s not like these tickets are the cheapest all the time, but they often are.

In the lawsuit, United and Orbitz call Skiplagged “unfair competition” and allege that it is promoting “strictly prohibited” travel. They want to recoup $75,000 in lost revenue from Zaman.

Zaman said he knew a lawsuit was inevitable but he points out that there’s nothing illegal about his web site.

He also said he has made no profit via the website and that all he’s done is help travelers get the best prices by exposing an “inefficiency” in airline prices that insiders have known about for decades.

“[Hidden city ticketing] have been around for a while, it just hasn’t been very accessible to consumers,” Zaman told CNNMoney.

Indeed, “hidden city,” ticketing is no secret among frequent fliers, said Michael Boyd, President of Boyd Group International, an aviation consulting firm in Evergreen, Co. Boyd worked as an American Airline ( AAL ) ticket agent 30 years ago, and says he was trained at the airline to help customers find “hidden city” fares.

“I don’t think it’s illegal what he’s doing,” Boyd said. But lawsuits are expensive and it could end up costing the young entrepreneur who has irked the two billion dollar corporations.

Airlines usually offer cheaper fares for some destinations that are not regional hubs, Boyd said. Many of these flights are routed through more popular destinations. But if a lot of people take advantage of that discrepancy it could hurt the airlines, which is why they want to shut him down.

Born in Bangladesh, Zaman grew up in Brooklyn, N.Y. and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in computer science at age 20 from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He lives in Manhattan and works at a technology start-up that he declined to name.

Zaman said Skiplagged is just a “side project” and declined to discuss the lawsuit.

Orbitz said in a statement that it is obligated to uphold airline fare rules.

A United spokesman said, “This practice violates our fare rules and we are taking action to stop it to help protect the vast majority of customers who buy legitimate tickets.”

Other travel experts say that the airlines may not achieve much if Zaman’s site is shut down, especially in a world where information is becoming more readily available.

“If [Skiplagged is] shut down, undoubtedly there will be other people to come along to scrape fares and make them available,” said Robert Mann, president of R.W. Mann Company, an airline consulting firm in Port Washington, N.Y.

Traveling to Spain – Spain – Embassy of the United States

Spain

Traveling to Spain

A safe trip abroad

The Department of State has prepared some useful tips for enjoying a safe trip abroad. This includes Country Specific Information on virtually every country in the world, Travel Alerts and Travel Warnings .

Entry for tourism / business

American citizens can enter Spain or Andorra visa-free for periods of up to three months. Spanish government regulations may require a return or on-going ticket or proof of funds. Should an American citizen wish to remain longer than ninety days, you will be required to obtain an extension of stay from Spanish immigration authorities. This extension, of no more than ninety days, must be requested at a police station at least three weeks before the initial entry period expires. It is only granted under exceptional circumstances. By law, foreigners who have overstayed their permitted time will not be allowed to leave Spain without first obtaining an exit permit from the Directorate of Security of the State in Madrid or from the local police in another city. A fine, commensurate with the time overstayed, may be charged.

Check the expiration date on your passport carefully before traveling to Europe. Entry into any of the 26 European countries in the Schengen area for short-term tourism, a business trip, or in transit to a non-Schengen destination, requires that your passport be valid for at least three months beyond your intended date of departure. If your passport does not meet the Schengen requirements, you may be refused boarding by the airline at your point of origin or while transferring planes. You could also be denied entry when you arrive in the Schengen area. For this reason, we recommend that your passport have at least six months validity remaining whenever you travel abroad. For more information, please see the State Department s Schengen FAQ page.

Should you be considering a stay in Spain longer than three months you should inquire with the Spanish embassy or consulate near your place of residence outside of Spain prior to entry. You may also write directly to the Spanish National Police at Calle Moratin, 43, 28014 Madrid; or check the Spanish Ministry of Interior s website.

Residency and work permits

American citizens wanting to study, reside, or work in Spain must obtain the appropriate visa from the Spanish Embassy or Consulate in their state/country of last residence. After the visa has been issued, foreigners have three months to apply for the corresponding permit with the Spanish authorities in Spain. Obtaining a residence or work permit is a complicated process; since regulations change continually, we suggest that you check the Ministry of Interior s website. or call the Ministry of Interior, within Spain, toll-free at 060. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also manages a website.

Driving in Spain

U.S. citizens visiting Spain who want to drive in Spain must obtain an international driving permit prior to their arrival in Spain. An international driving permit (IDP) translates your state-issued driver s license into 10 languages so you can show it to officials in foreign countries to help them interpret your driver s license. The IDP is not valid by itself and must be carried with your driver s license. Click the following link for more information on driving overseas.

U.S. citizens who are residents of Spain must obtain a valid Spanish driver s license. At this time, there is no agreement between the United States and Spain for the validation of a U.S. driver s license; therefore, holders of a U.S. license must attend a Spanish driving school and take the Spanish exam. You can find more information on the Spanish Traffic Authority website .

Story highlights

Just when you thought there were no more air-fare bargains left to be found online.

Customers cruising United Airlines’ website for tickets on Thursday got a pleasant surprise.

As reported by Forbes. air fares between cities such as Washington, DC and Minneapolis were being sold on the site for $0 to $10.

2012: Best time to buy airline tickets

2012: Best time to buy airline tickets 01:10

The $0 fare and other wildly reduced fares appear to have been available for about 15 minutes, before United shut down its online reservations system, reporting that its site was undergoing maintenance.

“One of our filings today contained an error which resulted in certain fares being displayed as zero. We have corrected this error, ” said United in a statement that also blamed human error for the mistake.

The site has since resumed normal operations.

The tickets are sold, now what?

The question now: will United honor the erroneously priced tickets?

Sales of airline tickets based on erroneous fares are nothing new.

In 2012, as reported by hackmytrip.com. Singapore Airlines. United Airlines and Travelocity all wrangled with the problem.

Some believe companies should stand by their sales and accept the consequences of their own mistakes.

Others say airlines shouldn’t be held accountable for honest mistakes.

United has yet to issue a statement regarding its plans on whether or not to honor the tickets sold at mistaken fares.

Should United Airlines honor the tickets i t sold Thursday for $0, $5 and $10? Leave a comment below.

What to Wear in London on your trip to the United

#travel to london

What to Wear in London and other parts of England

British fashion is partly defined by the country’s infamous weather. It is unpredictable and changeable and when the weather man on the television tells you that it will be sunny all week, be prepared for rain. What to wear in London has everything to do with the weather.

No matter the time of year, always keep a travel-size umbrell a in your purse.

In Britain it’s easy for the traveler to stick out like a sore thumb – walking boots, convertible zip leg trousers . SLR camera, guidebook and a backpack in the middle of London can easily scream “tourist.” Sadly in some parts this can make you a bit of a target but it’s also easy to blend in with the locals. British fashion isn’t quite as chic as the French . isn’t always as slouchy as American or as zany as Australian. But then again, I’ve seen people dressed as pirates on the tube and no-one bats an eyelid.

Like anywhere, pack for the environment – are you spending your time café crawling in the cities or getting lost in Scottish wilderness?

Also remember that Britain is one of those places where if you forget anything, you’ll be able to pick it up when you get there (and it won’t cost you an arm and a leg.) So don’t be afraid of packing light. Try to stick to a small selection of colors to make it easier to mix and match your items.

What to Wear in London and the UK in Winter

December, January February

For city exploring don t be afraid to break the don’t take your jeans traveling rule . They aren’t appropriate for hiking but I can’t think of anything more ideal to wear walking round London on a frosty winter morning.

Winter is cold and 2013 has been predicted to be the coldest winter for 100 years (global warming etc.) The key is to wrap up warm – wear lots of layers, (especially if you don’t fancy bringing a heavy winter coat along) and drink plenty of tea.

When planning what to wear in London pack tights, leggings and knee-high socks for extra warmth. Don’t forget the essential winter woollies either –hat, scarf and gloves.

Wear leggings or tights under your jeans for extra warmth. These leggings are a popular choice with the TFG readers and are lined with fleece.

Footwear – I find a comfy pair of waterproof ankle boots perfect. Soggy feet aren’t fun, neither are blisters. Be prepared for the wet as well as the cold.

Ankle booties  are the perfect choice any time of year.

What to Wear in London and the UK in Spring

March, April May

In spring it rains a lot. I usually carry a compact umbrella with me at all times in the UK, so that I’m always prepared for spontaneous showers – not just in spring.

Spring is that transition period between winter and summer, so layers are still important when planning what to wear in London, but in the later months think about swapping that chunky coat for a regular jacket.

Transform a temperate outfit on a chilly day with a scarf, hat and tights. Skirts are fun but remember that it can get quite breezy so you ll have to wear double layers underneath.

If you’re in the countryside you’re bound to see waves of differing spring flowers and baby lambs, but remember to be prepared for the mud.

It s not uncommon to see people wearing these Hunter rain boots on very rainy days.

What to Pack for a Trip to London and the UK in Summer

June, July August

Summer can be warm but can also be very wet – be prepared for both. Check bbc.co.uk/weather/ before your trip to get the most accurate forecast. Don t be surprised if it s grey and gloomy in the summer!

If the forecast calls for sun, be bright and bold as you plan what to pack for London! Crack out the summer dresses, sunglasses and hats. Once again, be aware of the breezes so you might want to consider layering – sometimes jersey skirts and dresses hold their shape better than wispy skater styles.

A cardigan and a scarf are essentials layers to any summer outfit in case the sun decides to go in.

You can never go wrong with a light leather jacket for cooler summer days and nights.

A comfy pair of sandals are great for walking about town on warm days but ankle boots and ballet flats  are ideal the rest of the time.

A note on bags:  Personally I am a big fan of satchels for cities and rucksacks for countryside. I often feel that a satchel with a zip can be safer than many daypacks, which can also be unnecessary for city exploring.

Find out why cross-body purses  are the best travel shoulder bags for women.

What to Wear in London and the UK in Autumn

September, October November

Autumn is my favorite season in general and also to dress for. I love the crunchy leaves, the mild weather and the earthy colors.

As the transitional period between summer and winter, things start to get colder and milder in the autumn. When planning what to pack for London this time of year it’s time to think about a woolly hat and light waterproof jacket such as  this one .

If you’re a skirt and dress person rather than a trouser person, then leggings and opaque tights are essential to make outfits a little warmer.

Scarves are extremely useful and a warm knit option will help keep you warm during this transitional season. When it’s not quite cold enough for a coat, then a jumper or cardigan combined with a hat and a scarf will do. Remember, layering is key!

5 Important Packing Tips

  • Dress for the weather, activity environment – make sure you’re comfortable .
  • Always carry an umbrella with you.
  • Scarves are extremely versatile – in the winter a chunky knit will keep you snug whilst in the summer a lighter scarf can help protect you from the sun.
  • If you’re not used to colder climates. still plan for “winter” weather YEAR ROUND. Layers are key!
  • If in doubt, bring an empty suitcase and head to the nearest Primark to stock up on cheap clothing that is both weather appropriate and locals approved!

When you’re planning what to pack for a trip to London and the UK, follow these travel tips to keep you in line with the fussy weather. Thanks for this helpful post Lottie! Don’t forget to check out The Ambling Explorer .

Cheap Flights to London, United Kingdom (LON) #cheap #tickets #airline

#find the cheapest flights
#

Recent flights forums

Cheap flights to London are available from Darwin International Airport and typically include a transfer in Singapore. Cheap flights exiting Adelaide and Perth on Emirates route through Dubai whilst other carriers may include a flight to either Singapore or Kuala Lumpur. Flights available from Sydney have carriers such as Air China stopping in Beijing, a Malaysia Airlines flight may route via Kuala Lumpur and Etihad transferring through Abu Dhabi. Departures from Brisbane generally route through Kuala Lumpur or Dubai, with cheap flights on Singapore Airlines transferring through Singapore. Ground transportation at Heathrow Airport is just as busy as London itself. A taxi rank is located outside each terminal but whilst convenient, this is a pricey option. The Heathrow Connect rail service travels to Paddington with tickets £9.50 stopping at all stations. The Heathrow Express is a bit more expensive but is the quickest and easiest way to get into the city.

Getting Around London

A little planning or patience will make navigating London simple. Purchase an Oyster card (similar to Melbourne’s Myki card) for the best price and easy transition between services. The London Underground, Docklands Light Rail (DLR) and Overground all use a zonally based fare system. For cheap travel, opt for the red buses which have a flat-fare of less than £2 as does the Tramlink system. London Black Cabs are somewhat expensive and largely unnecessary. Most attractions are within walking distance, are accessible on the extensive public transport network or en route with a guided tour. Barclays Cycle Hire is similar to Brisbane’s City Cycle scheme and is a great way to explore London at your own leisure.

London is much more than the British Museum, Tate Modern and National History Museum. Watch the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace, ride the London Eye and then welcome greater London with open arms. See a human skeleton a little under eight foot tall at the Hunterian Museum, a jar of moles at Grant Museum of Zoology and the cringe-worthy tools at the Old Operating Theatre. Nostalgia is particularly romantic at the Charles Dickens Museum and Pollock’s Toy Museum – round this off with a quick photo at London’s first red telephone box at the Royal Academy entrance. Take a flying trapeze class at Hoxton’s Circus Space, a pottery workshop at Wheelhouse Pottery or an overhead walk through Kew Gardens on the Xstrata Treetop Walkway. The Lee Valley White Water Centre has white-water rafting on the 2012 Olympic course or laze by the huge pool that is Tooting Bec Lido for a cheap afternoon. Of course a trip to London wouldn’t be complete without a ride on an open-air bus tour. If this isn’t enough, join the Jack the Ripper tour for a tasteful, yet gruesome slice of London.

London is an impressive retail palace with equally impressive price tags. Snare a treasure at the Camden Market or Portobello Road Market. Harrods and Harvey Nichols offer high end department store shopping while the Dover Street Market houses multiples levels of boutique style fashion. Visit Lazy Oaf or the amazing emerging talent concept of Wolf & Badger. Liberty is a mall-style shopping dynasty, but if the budget can’t stretch, Bicester Village and The Galleria Outlet Centre should satisfy retail needs. For fine dining, sample the tasting (degustation) menu at Seven Park Place. Gilgamesh offers a group set menu or delight the carnivore within at Hawksmoor Guildhall with their imaginative beef tasting menu. Enjoy roast pheasant at Powder Keg Diplomacy or the Cantonese cuisine of Plum Valley. For a cheap eat visit Lantana, Princi and the Princi Pizzeria for delicious wood-fired pizza. Sip on cocktails at Beaufort Bar or head to the gorgeous jazz sound of Nightjar. Find your way to trendy Experimental Cocktail Club, laid-back Efes Pool Club or the breathtaking backdrop of Club Aquarium. Slow it down at Passing Clouds, party hard at Egg Nightclub or alongside thousands of clubbers at world-famous Ministry of Sound.

United Airlines suing 22-year-old NYC man who figured out how to get cheaper plane tickets

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) A young computer whiz from New York City has launched a site to help people buy cheap plane tickets. But an airline company and its travel partner want to shut him down.

United Airlines and Orbitz filed a civil lawsuit last month against 22-year-old Aktarer Zaman, who founded the website Skiplagged.com last year.

In the lawsuit, United and Orbitz call Skiplagged “unfair competition” and allege that it is promoting “strictly prohibited” travel. They want to recoup $75,000 in lost revenue from Zaman.

Gulf Oil Spill – Not Over: Dolphins, Turtles Dying in Record

#

Gulf Oil Spill “Not Over”: Dolphins, Turtles Dying in Record Numbers

The report, a compilation of published science since the spill, reveals that the Gulf oil spill is far from over, Inkley said.

The oil is not gone: There is oil on the bottom of the Gulf, oil is washing up on the beaches, and oil is still on the marshes, he said.

I am not surprised by this. In Prince William Sound, 25 years after the wreck of Exxon Valdez. there are still some species that have not fully recovered. (Related: Oil From the Exxon Valdez Spill Lingers on Alaska Beaches . )

However, BP, which operated the now-defunct oil well, claims that the report is a piece of political advocacy—not science.

For example, the report misrepresents the U.S. government’s investigation into dolphin deaths; as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s own Web site states, that inquiry is ongoing, BP said in a statement provided to National Geographic.

The report also conveniently overlooks information available from other independent scientific reports showing that the Gulf is undergoing a strong recovery. Just this week, a study published by Auburn University researchers found no evidence that the spill impacted young red snapper populations on reefs off the Alabama coast.

The report examined 14 species that live in the Gulf. Those include:

—More than 900 bottlenose dolphins have been found dead or stranded in the oil spill area since April 2010. If you stretched the corpses lengthwise, that’s 1.5 miles (2.4 kilometers) of dead dolphins, Inkley said. Scientists know that is more than in previous years because they’ve been recording deaths and strandings in the Gulf for a decade.

Ongoing research also shows that dolphins swimming in oiled areas are underweight, anemic, and showing signs of liver and lung diseases. (Related: U.S. Dolphin Deaths Rise to 300; Cause Still a Mystery . )

A top predator like the dolphin falling ill is a sign that species further down the food chain are also having trouble, Inkley said.

When you have sick dolphins, it tells you there’s a problem here and it needs to be investigated.

—There are five species of sea turtle that live in the Gulf, and all of them are listed as threatened or endangered by the Endangered Species Act. About 500 dead sea turtles have been found in the spill region every year since 2011— a dramatic increase over normal rates, according to the NWF. What’s unknown is how many turtles died at sea and were never recovered by scientists.

—An oil chemical from the spill has been shown to cause irregular heartbeats in the embryos of bluefin and yellowfin tuna. That’s a critical stage of development for the fish, so there’s a lot of concern that the damage could cause heart attacks or deaths, Inkley said. (Related: Odd Animal Deaths, Deformities Linked to Gulf Oil Spill? )

—Loons, birds that winter on the Louisiana coast, are carrying increasing concentrations of toxic oil compounds in their blood.

—Sperm whales that swam near the BP well have higher levels of DNA-damaging metals in their bodies than in the past. The metals in their bodies, such as chromium and nickel, are the same ones that were present in the well.

Overall, we have a long way to go in understanding the full impact, Inkley said.

To that end, NWF and the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration will continue monitoring wildlife in the oiled region—the latter is required to do so by the Oil Pollution Act.

Restoring the oiled ecosystems is a goal, Inkley said, but he added oil is tough to remove, especially in marshes and in the deep ocean. That’s why NWF is emphasizing prevention—in particular, adopting alternative energy resources that are not carbon-based and won’t cause oil spills.

I’m still haunted by the ‘walking dead’ brown pelicans covered head to toe in the oil, added Inkley.

We must not let this happen again.

Asset sales plan secures EU backing for $130 billion Dow, DuPont

Asset sales plan secures EU backing for $130 billion Dow, DuPont merger

(Reuters) – Dow Chemical and DuPont won the blessing of the European Union for their $130 billion merger on Monday by agreeing to sell substantial assets including key research and development activities.

The European Commission had been concerned that the merger of two of the biggest and oldest U.S. chemical producers would leave few incentives to produce new herbicides and pesticides in the future. The deal is one of a trio of mega mergers that will reshape the industry and consolidate six companies into three.

Asset sales would ensure competition in the sector and benefit European farmers and consumers, the Commission said.

“We need effective competition in this sector so companies are pushed to develop products that are ever safer for people and better for the environment,” European Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager said in a statement.

“Our decision today ensures that the merger between Dow and DuPont does not reduce price competition for existing pesticides or innovation for safer and better products in the future.”

The two other big deals in the industry are ChemChina’s [CNNCC.UL] $43 billion bid for Syngenta and Bayer’s acquisition of Monsanto.

Dow and DuPont said they were still on target for $3 billion in cost synergies and $1 billion in growth benefits.

The deal is still to be approved by regulators in the United States, Brazil, China, Australia and Canada, but the companies said they were confident of clearance in all remaining jurisdictions.

“This regulatory milestone is a significant step toward closing the merger transaction, with the intention to subsequently spin into three independent publicly traded companies,” Dow spokeswoman Rachelle Schikorra said in an email.

The EU approval may be a sign that U.S. regulators would follow suit because the agencies have traditionally coordinated on reviews and remedies for large multinational mergers, said Diana Moss, president of the American Antitrust Institute non-profit group.

However, any required asset sales would likely reflect antitrust concerns in the local marketplace.

“In the U.S. there are very high shares in corn and soybean seeds. We would expect those problems to be significant enough for enforcers in the U.S. to remedy them,” Moss said.

Weighty Decision

The 1,000-page decision underlined the significance of the merger. In return for the EU green light, DuPont will divest large parts of its global pesticides business, including its global research and development organization.

The unit makes herbicides for cereals, oilseed rape, sunflower, rice and pasture and insecticides for insect control for fruits and vegetables.

Dow, in turn, will sell two acid co-polymer manufacturing facilities in Spain and the United States, as well as a contract with a third party through which it buys ionomers. The company has already found a buyer in South Korea’s SK Innovation.

“The main surprises here are the inclusion of the pesticides and the exclusion of any kind of seed assets,” Bernstein analysts wrote in a note. The analysts also said they had expected EU to be concerned about the concentration of seed sales, and that they would require Dow to divest its corn seeds business.

European Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager holds a news conference after Dow Chemical gained conditional EU antitrust approval on Monday for their $130 billion merger by agreeing to significant asset sales, one of a trio of mega mergers that will redraw the agrochemicals industry, in Brussels, Belgium March 27, 2017. Yves Herman

“We see the required divestments here as smaller than we originally expected, due to the exclusion of seed assets”.

United Airlines Flights Information

Hand Baggage Allowance

Each passenger is allowed to bring one carry-on luggage item as well as one small personal item for each flight. A traveler’s carry-on bag and personal item must be able to easily fit in the overhead bins or under the seat in front of them at the cabin crew’s discretion.

Maximum dimensions allowed for carry-on luggage are 9 inches x 14 inches x 22 inches (22 cm x 35 cm x 56 cm) including both the wheels and handles.

A personal item is generally defined as a purse, handbag, laptop or briefcase, book bag, or other similarly sized item. Maximum dimensions allowed for a small personal item are 9 inches x 10 inches x 17 inches (22 cm x 25 cm x 43 cm).

Checked Baggage Allowance

Checked baggage service charges apply at any point where bags are checked, although some customers are exempt from charges for bags within specified size and weight limits. Services charges for the first two check baggage items may apply for bags with a maximum weight of 50 lbs and a maximum exterior dimension of 62 inches. Any additional bags that exceed the maximum weight or size limits are considered excess baggage and may be subject to additional fees or regulations. MileagePlus members, active military personnel or their dependents may be exempt from checked baggage service charges for one or more of their luggage items as long as these items meet the weight and size requirements. This exemption does not pertain to group reservations of ten or more passengers or when the flight is not operated by United or United Express services. Passengers are recommended to carry all delicate and valuable items with their carry-on luggage, as the TSA is required to perform a comprehensive screen on all checked baggage. These screening procedures are not considered the liability of United Airlines.

Check-In

Check-in is available within 24 hours of the flight’s scheduled departing time. Online check-in is the recommended method as it is fastest and boarding passes can be printed from a home computer. A message containing a link to your boarding pass can also be emailed to most mobile devices or laptops to be shown to check-in staff. A United Airlines app is also available for smartphone devices and can be used to instantly check-in before departure times. Regardless of check-in time, all baggage must be checked at least 30 minutes before domestic flights and 60 minutes before international connections.

Boarding Information

Most domestic flights are boarded up to 15 minutes before the scheduled departure time. With most US airports suggesting at least an hour and a half processing time, United Airlines recommends arriving at least two hours before departure. Arriving at the departure gate at least 30 minutes before the scheduled departure time is also highly recommended. Peak traffic hours at most airports are between 6:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. Travelers should keep in mind that proper identification is required at all check-in desks, TSA stations and at the departure gate.

Frequent Flyer Information – MileagePlus

United Airlines offers a frequent flyer program, entitled MileagePlus, that has been voted the world’s best frequent flyer program for nine consecutive years by Global Traveler magazine. “Miles” are earned by purchasing tickets, hotel reservations, car rentals and other services. Credit cards are offered that collect MileagePlus miles through standard purchases and other bonus reward programs. Amtrak tickets can also gain MileagePlus miles as well as trips planned through United Cruises and United Vacation services. MileagePlus miles can be used to purchase United Airlines tickets as well as many other services provided by United Airlines and its partners. Flight upgrades can be made with MileagePlus miles giving passengers access to premium flight cabins, checked bag allowances and complementary premium beverages. These upgrades can be made before or after tickets and reservations are purchased, although certain benefits are only available if upgrades are made prior to check-in. Miles can also be used to book reservations at many brand-name hotels or pay for a membership to United Airlines’ United Club and Lounge located at many airports worldwide. These lounges provide free snacks, beverages and Wi-Fi for members and are also partnered with other airport lounge services to ensure that MileagePlus travelers have a private and relaxing atmosphere while waiting for connecting flights. Miles can also be donated to charities through United’s donation services. A complete list of charities is available on their website and covers a wide range of non-profits and other similar associations.

General Information

What would become United Airlines completed its first commercial flight in 1926 and eventually merged with William Boeing’s aircraft and carrier company to create the United Aircraft and Transport Corporation. By 1933, United was the first airline company to fly an all-metal aircraft, the famous Boeing 247. After merging with Capital Airlines in the 1960s, United Airlines became the USA’s largest airline company and remained so for many years. Continuing to control a large portion of American airline traffic, United Airlines also became the first airline company to fly the now standard Boeing 747 and after becoming employee-owned through a stock ownership program, became the world’s largest employee-owned corporation in 1994. United Airlines is based in Chicago, Illinois in Willis Tower (once known as Sears Tower) and operates over 700 mainline aircraft. The company currently boasts over 85,000 employees in the United States and countries around the world. As one of the world’s most comprehensive and longest operating airline services, United Airlines is one of the USA’s most traveled carriers. An average of over 5,200 flights are made daily to more than 350 airports worldwide and the airline has handled nearly 140 million passengers yearly since 2012. United Airlines also prides itself on being an environmentally sensitive corporation, flying the world’s first commercial aviation flight on certified bio-fuel. They have also campaigned to replace all paperwork with Apple’s iPad technology and have purchased over 100 fuel efficient Boeing 737 Max 9s to replace less efficient older models.

NEW YORK A young computer whiz from New York City has launched a site to help people buy cheap plane tickets. But an airline company and its travel partner want to shut him down.

United Airlines and Orbitz filed a civil lawsuit last month against 22-year-old Aktarer Zaman, who founded the website Skiplagged.com last year.

The site helps travelers find cheap flights by using a strategy called hidden city ticketing.

The idea is that you buy an airline ticket that has a layover at your actual destination. United Kingdom

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (the United Kingdom or the UK ) is a constitutional monarchy comprising much of the British Isles.

This Union is more than 300 years old and comprises four constituent nations: England. Scotland. Wales. and Northern Ireland. It occupies all of the island of Great Britain, the north-eastern portion of the island of Ireland and most of the remaining British Isles.

The UK today is a diverse patchwork of native and immigrant cultures, possessing a fascinating history and dynamic modern culture, both of which remain hugely influential in the wider world. Although Britannia no longer rules the waves, the UK is still an overwhelmingly popular destination for many travellers. Its capital and largest city of London is, along with New York. often reckoned to be one of only two cities of truly global importance but many come to see quaint villages and the beautiful and quickly changing countryside.

Understand Edit

It’s important to remember that the Republic of Ireland is a completely separate state from the United Kingdom, that seceded from the Union in 1922 and gained full independence in 1937.

Home nations Edit

The ‘Great’ in Great Britain (Britannia Major in Roman times; Grande-Bretagne in French) is to distinguish it from the other, smaller “Britain”: Brittany (Britannia Minor ; Bretagne ) in northwestern France.

However, for a geographer “Great Britain” (“GB”) refers just to the single largest island in the British Isles that has most of the land area of Scotland, England and Wales. In normal usage it is a collective term for all those three nations together. Great Britain became part of the United Kingdom when the Irish and British parliaments merged in 1801 to form the “United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland”. This was changed to “. and Northern Ireland” when all but the six Northern Irish counties seceded from the Union in 1922 after a treaty granting Irish home rule. “Britain” is simply another name for the United Kingdom, and does include Northern Ireland, despite common misconceptions otherwise.

The flag of the United Kingdom is popularly known as the Union Jack or, more properly, Union Flag. It comprises the flags of St. George of England, St. Andrew of Scotland and the St. Patrick’s Cross of Ireland superimposed on each other. Within England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, the flags of each nation are commonly used. The St. Patrick’s Cross flag is often seen on St. Patrick’s Day in Northern Ireland. Since the Republic of Ireland split from the UK though, St. Patrick’s Saltire is not used for Northern Ireland, as it represented the whole of the island of Ireland. A flag (known as the “Ulster Banner”) was designed for Northern Ireland in the 1920s, which was based on the flag of Ulster (similar in appearance to the Saint George’s Cross flag of England) and includes a Red Hand of Ulster and a crown. Although the flag’s official status ended with the dissolving of the province’s devolved government in the early 1970s, it can still be seen in Northern Ireland, particularly among the Loyalist community and on sporting occasions. As Wales was politically integrated into the English kingdom hundreds of years ago, its flag was not incorporated into the Union Jack. The Welsh flag features the Red Dragon of Cadwaladr, King of Gwynedd, superimposed on the Tudor colours of green and white.

Travel Warning – Kenya

U.S. Embassy, Nairobi, Kenya

The U.S. Department of State warns U.S. citizens of the risks of travel to Kenya. U.S. citizens in Kenya, and those considering travel to Kenya, should evaluate their personal security situation in light of continuing and recently heightened threats from terrorism and the high rate of violent crime in some areas. The levels of risk vary throughout the country. The Embassy will continue to monitor the security situation and provide updates. This replaces the Travel Warning of July 3, 2012, to update information about the current security situation.

The U.S. government continues to receive information about potential terrorist threats aimed at U.S. Western, and Kenyan interests in Kenya. Terrorist acts can include suicide operations, bombings, kidnappings, attacks on civil aviation, and attacks on maritime vessels in or near Kenyan ports. Although the pursuit of those responsible for previous terrorist activities continues, many of those involved remain at large and still operate in the region. Travelers should consult the Worldwide Caution for further information and details.

Kenya initiated military action against al-Shabaab by crossing into Somalia on October 16, 2011, and, on June 2, 2012, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) whereby it formally joined the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM). Kenyan troops within AMISOM are now actively pursuing al-Shabaab in southeastern Somalia. In response to the Kenyan intervention, al-Shabaab and its sympathizers have conducted retaliatory attacks against civilian and government targets in Kenya.

In the past year, there have been over 30 attacks involving grenades or explosive devices in Kenya. At least 76 people died in these attacks, and around 220 people were injured. There were no U.S. citizens among the casualties. Ten of these attacks occurred in North Eastern Province, mainly in Dadaab, Wajir, and Garissa. Four attacks occurred in Mombasa. Six grenade and improvised explosive device (IED) attacks have occurred in Nairobi, illustrating an increase in the number of attacks and an advance in the sophistication of attacks. Targets included police stations and police vehicles, nightclubs and bars, churches, a mosque, a religious gathering, a downtown building of small shops, and a bus station. One of the deadliest attacks occurred in Nairobi on November 18, 2012, when an IED detonated on a passenger bus in Eastleigh, killing ten. The most fatal attack in Kenya this past year occurred on July 1, 2012, with two simultaneous assaults on churches in Garissa. In this attack, 17 people were killed and about 50 people were injured. Additionally, Kenyan law enforcement has disrupted several terrorist plots, which resulted in the discoveries of weapons caches and other dangerous materials, and the arrests of several individuals.

Multiple kidnappings of Westerners have occurred in Kenya. In September 2011, a British woman was kidnapped and her husband murdered at a coastal resort near the Kenya-Somali border. The British hostage was released in March 2012 after payment of ransom. In October 2011, a French national was kidnapped from a private residence on the popular tourist destination of Lamu Island on Kenya’s north coast. She died while in captivity in Somalia. Also in October 2011, two Spanish nationals working for a NGO were kidnapped in a Dadaab refugee camp, in northeastern Kenya. They are still being held. On June 29, 2012, four international aid workers (from Canada, Pakistan, Norway, and the Philippines) were kidnapped in Dadaab. All were rescued on July 1, 2012.

In response to the security threats within Kenya posed by violent extremists, including al-Shabaab, the Government of Kenya announced on December 13, 2012 that all urban refugees (primarily Somalis) should relocate to refugee camps. The Kenyan government is currently conducting sweeps at checkpoints and in predominantly Somali-inhabited areas of Kenya searching for proof of status in Kenya and sending those who are refugees to camps. U.S. citizens of Somali descent should be aware that they may encounter interruptions in their travel due to these directives. It is very important to carry proof of identity and legal status in Kenya (i.e. valid visa). If you are detained by police or immigration officials, you should request to speak to someone from the Consular Section of the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi.

As a result of these recent events and threats, U.S. government employees, contractors, grantees, and their dependents are prohibited from traveling to the North Eastern Province, including the cities of El Wak, Wajir, Garissa, Dadaab, Mandera, and Liboi. Although the U.S. government travel restriction for Lamu has been lifted, U.S. citizens should consider ongoing security concerns following recent events involving U.S. citizens in Lamu, including a sexual assault and threatened kidnapping. U.S. government personnel are restricted from traveling to the coastal area north of Pate Island, including Kiwayu and north to Kiunga on the Kenya/Somalia border.

Although these restrictions do not apply to travelers not associated with the U.S. government, U.S. citizens already in Kenya should take these restrictions into account when planning travel. The Embassy regularly reviews the security of these areas for possible modification.

Clashes occasionally occur in and around Isiolo and Moyale, both in Eastern province, and in 2012 there were numerous instances of sporadic violence and protests elsewhere in the country. Rioting occurred in Mombasa shortly after a local Muslim cleric with alleged ties to al-Shabaab was killed in a drive-by shooting, resulting in the deaths of three policemen and four church burnings. Demonstrations in Kisumu (Western Kenya) following the murder of two prominent Kenyan citizens in October 2012 turned violent, leaving at least four protestors dead. More than 160 people have been killed in recent clashes between two communities in Tana River County, in Kenya’s Coast Province. While this violence is not directed at foreigners, protests and ethnic clashes are unpredictable. U.S. citizens are advised to check conditions and monitor local media reports before traveling to these areas.

Violent and sometimes fatal criminal attacks, including armed carjackings, grenade attacks, home invasions and burglaries, and kidnappings can occur at any time and in any location, particularly in Nairobi. U.S. citizens, including U.S. Embassy employees, have been victims of such crimes within the past year.

U.S. citizens in Kenya should be extremely vigilant with regard to their personal security, particularly in crowded public places such as clubs, hotels, resorts, shopping centers, restaurants, bus stations, and places

of worship. U.S. citizens should also remain alert in residential areas, at schools, and at outdoor recreational events. U.S. citizens should use commonsense precautions at all times, to include the following practices: avoid crowded transportation venues; visit only legitimate businesses and tourist areas only during daylight hours; use well-marked taxis and be sure to lock vehicle doors and keep windows up; lock all lodging doors and windows; carry minimal amounts of cash and credit cards; do not wear jewelry which attracts undue attention; know emergency phone numbers; do not resist or antagonize armed criminals; and always be aware of your surroundings. These measures can help ensure your travel to Kenya is safe and enjoyable.

U.S. citizens should avoid demonstrations, political rallies of all kinds, and voter polling places, particularly in the lead up to Kenya’s political primaries on January 17 and 18, 2013, general elections on March 4, and during a possible presidential run-off election to occur no later than April 18. Kenya’s last national election, in December 2007, resulted in widespread unrest and violence. Isolated instances of suspected political violence have already occurred in some regions of the country. U.S. citizens considering travel to Kenya during the election period should consider the possibility of civil disturbances, and disruptions of transportation and/or communication systems.

U.S. citizens who travel to or reside in Kenya are urged to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) in order to receive the most up-to-date security information. By enrolling, U.S. citizens make it easier for the Embassy to contact them in case of emergency. U.S. citizens without internet access may enroll directly with the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi.

The U.S. Embassy in Nairobi is located on United Nations Avenue, Gigiri, Nairobi, Kenya; telephone (+254) (20) 363-6000; fax (+254) (20) 363-6410. In the event of an after-hours emergency, the Embassy duty officer may be contacted at (+254) (20) 363-6000. Travelers may also consult the U.S. Embassy Nairobi website for more information.

U.S. citizens should also consult the Department of State’s Country Specific Information for Kenya, the Worldwide Caution, Travel Warnings, and Travel Alerts, which are all available on the U.S. Department of State’s, Bureau of Consular Affairs website. Travelers may obtain up-to-date information on security conditions by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll-free in the United States and Canada, or on a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444 from other countries. United Airlines: Stop blocking WND on flights #airline #cheap #flights

Wi-Fi provider not allowing access

Published: 11/22/2015 at 5:03 PM

One subcontractor providing Wi-Fi service to a small percentage of United Airlines flights has incorrectly categorized the WND.com news site as a source for downloads, and is blocking readers access to it on those jets.

But United Airlines said it has asked Thales Wi-Fi to correct the error and make WND accessible on all flights.

It s just the latest instance in which readers were kept from WND, either by error or agenda.

Passengers on certain United flights for at least a year have noted the airline s comment that WND is blocked.

United officials confirmed this week they have asked the Wi-Fi provider, Thales, to correct that.

Thales, based overseas, did not respond to a WND request for comment.

But United s Karen May told WND, We are addressing the issue. We have submitted a request to have the block removed on affected aircraft.

She explained, This is a technology issue. One of our Wi-Fi providers relies on a third-party service to categorize websites. It appears that service has labeled WND.com as streaming and downloadable video, thus blocking the site.

It was in 2013 when Barack Obama s Department of Defense blocked WND on a number of bases.

The exact number of bases wasn t known, but reports had come from Tinker Air Force Base, Kirtland Air Force Base, Hanscom Air Force Base, Hill Air Force Base and several others.

WND reported at the time that the decision to block WND was reversed after a security issue was resolved.

WND reported that the Navy confirmed it was blocking users from access to the news site. At that time, Capt. Teresa Ovalle, from the Navy operations at Quantico, Virginia, where the Navy Marine Corps Intranet is managed, explained that it was an issue of security on the servers providing readers access to WND. The issues ultimately were resolved.

Also, back in 2007 WND was being blocked from Navy and Marine Corps bases worldwide. It took months of investigating before the block eventually was lifted.

WND readers have told the news site that problems with the website being blocked on military bases date back a decade.

When I reported for duty in October 2003, I was not able to access WND s site, one reader wrote earlier, saying he d even asked about the problem but never received a satisfactory answer.

The McAfee Internet security corporation at one point listed WND as blogs/wiki and controversial opinion in a database of website URLs, triggering a number of systems to deny users access to the site.

In another case, a Web Guard option offered by T-Mobile on its cellular telephone service disconnected access for some readers to WND, mistakenly classifying it as adult material.

Another case arose in Minnesota when a reader told of getting a response of inappropriate when he tried to access WND through the Wi-Fi services at a Dunn Bros. coffee shop.

The coffee shop was using software from DansGuardian.org. Other problems were raised by WND readers over the work of one of the larger filtering companies, ContentWatch.com, which has a product called Net Nanny that has been cited by readers several times for incorrectly blocking WND for having hate and violence.

WND also has experienced deliberate discrimination. Several years ago, PRWeb. which distributes press releases from businesses, politicians, bloggers, activists and just about everyone, drew the line at sending out a paid report from the Beat Obama Committee that cited information from WND. PRWeb considered WND not credible and a biased source of news.

After days of delay and negotiations with PRWeb management, BOPAC reworked its press release, citing other news agencies, and the release was accepted.

United, Orbitz Sue Travel Site Over ‘Hidden City’ Tickets

United Airlines Inc. and Orbitz Worldwide LLC sued to prevent the travel website Skiplagged.com from helping consumers buy what the companies call improper “hidden city” plane tickets that undercut their sales.

Skiplagged helps travelers find cheap airfares by enabling them to book multistop flights and deplane before the flights reach their as-booked final destination. Sometimes a fare that travels through a hub city to another location can be cheaper than a ticket to the hub city alone.

“In its simplest form, a passenger purchases a ticket from city A to city B to city C but does not travel beyond city B,” according to the companies’ complaint. “‘Hidden City’ ticketing is strictly prohibited by most commercial airlines because of logistical and public-safety concerns.”

Skiplagged founder Aktarer Zaman of New York “intentionally and maliciously” interfered with airline industry business relationships “by promoting prohibited forms of travel,” the companies said in their complaint, filed today in Chicago federal court.

Among their stated concerns is United’s resultant inability to count passengers, which can cause departure delays and affect fuel load computations.

No Permission

Orbitz, an online travel booking site, and United said neither of them gave Zaman permission to engage in hidden-city ticketing. Claiming he’s unfairly competing against them and implying he’s connected to United and Orbitz by linking customers to their websites, they’re seeking a court order halting the conduct.

Zaman, reached through his LinkedIn.com e-mail account, had no immediate comment on the suit. United Airlines is a unit of Chicago-based United Continental Holdings. Orbitz is a unit of Orbitz Worldwide Inc.

Randy Petersen, publisher of InsideFlyer magazine, said hundreds of thousands of frequent fliers probably use the hidden-city technique, but the most savvy only do it a few times a year to prevent detection by the airlines. Carriers are likely to freeze the frequent-flier accounts or travelers who use the technique or to strip them of miles, said Petersen, who is based in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Potato Chips

Airlines and passengers have disagreed over the practice for decades, he said. People who seek out hidden-city tickets often liken forgoing the second half of a trip to not eating the bottom half of a bag of chips. The thinking: They paid for the chips, so why are they required to eat the whole bag?

Carriers say that the practice takes unfair advantage of the hub-and-spoke airline system and that people who use it are defrauding them, Petersen said.

“Use of hidden-city ticketing can save a lot of money, and airlines aren’t in the business of promoting, allowing or turning a blind eye to practices that can break the system down,” Petersen said.

Small corporate travel departments occasionally employ it, too, risking the loss of fare discounts they enjoy. Still, some can’t resist paying $400 for a ticket using the technique if it would cost $1,200 the traditional way, he said.

Airlines have told Orbitz that a traveler caught on a hidden-city routing is subject to having his ticket voided without refund, the Internet travel company said today in a statement.

American Airlines Group Inc. in a letter to travel agents on its website, suggested it will have to raise fares if it keeps losing money from the practice.

“Purchasing a ticket to a point beyond the actual destination and getting off the aircraft at the connecting point is unethical,” according to the letter by American, which isn’t party to the case. “It is tantamount to switching price tags to obtain a lower price on goods sold at department stores.”

The case is United Airlines Inc. v. Zaman, 14-cv-9214, U.S. District Court, Northern District of Illinois (Chicago).

United Airlines suing 22-year-old NYC man who figured out how to get cheaper plane tickets

Please enable Javascript to watch this video

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — A young computer whiz from New York City has launched a site to help people buy cheap plane tickets. But an airline company and its travel partner want to shut him down.

United Airlines and Orbitz filed a civil lawsuit last month against 22-year-old Aktarer Zaman, who founded the website Skiplagged.com last year.

Skiplagged.com now has a banner on the top of the site with a donation fund to support the creator’s legal defense.

He also said he has made no profit via the website and that all he’s done is help travelers get the best prices by exposing an “inefficiency,” in airline prices that insiders have known about for decades.

Boyd worked as an American Airline ticket agent 30 years ago, and says he was trained at the airline to help customers find “hidden city” fares.

Please enable Javascript to watch this video

Zaman said Skiplagged is just a “side project.”

Zaman and United declined to discuss the lawsuit. Orbitz said in a statement that it is obligated to uphold airline fare rules.

United, Orbitz Sue Travel Site Over ‘Hidden City’ Tickets – Bloomberg

Flight map from United States to Australia

Flying time from United States to Australia

The total flight duration from United States to Australia is 19 hours, 26 minutes .

This assumes an average flight speed for a commercial airliner of 500 mph, which is equivalent to 805 km/h or 434 knots. It also adds an extra 30 minutes for take-off and landing. Your exact time may vary depending on wind speeds.

If you’re planning a trip, remember to add more time for the plane to taxi between the gate and the airport runway. This measurement is only for the actual flying time. You should also factor in airport wait times and possible equipment or weather delays. If you’re trying to figure out what time you’ll arrive at the destination, you may want to see if there’s a time difference between United States and Australia .

The calculation of flight time is based on the straight line flight distance from United States to Australia (“as the crow flies”), which is about 9,463 miles or 15 230 kilometers .

Your trip begins in the United States.

It ends in Australia.

Your flight direction from United States to Australia is West (-90 degrees from North).

The flight time calculator measures the average flight duration between points. It uses the great circle formula to compute the travel mileage.

If you are planning a trip from any city in mainland United States to Australia, chances are you will need to have a connecting flight from Los Angeles or San Francisco to Australia.

Direct flights are available from Los Angeles and San Francisco to Sydney, Australia. If you are looking for direct flights to Melbourne and Brisbane from the west coast you will need to choose Los Angeles as your connecting city.

To get the best airfares from United States to Australia and more options for connecting flights to other parts of Australia, choose a flight that gets into Sydney Kingsford Smith International Airport (SYD) or Melbourne Airport (MEL).

For affordable flights within Australia you may choose Virgin Australia, Jetstar or Webjet Australia. Another way to save is by purchasing a Qantas Walkabout Air Pass. This Air Pass allows you to customize your trip to over 60 destinations in Australia. You can use the Air Pass with Qantas codeshare flights operated by Jetstar, Alliance Airlines, Qantas Link or Air North.

What to Wear in London on your trip to the United

United Airlines: Stop blocking WND on flights #travel #ins

Accommodations: This subsector is the largest of the three and accounts for 19 percent of total travel industry output. Accommodations benefited from international overseas traveler growth of 7 percent in 2012.

Air Travel: This subsector accounts for nearly16 percent of travel industry output. Airlines continuously seek ways to increase revenue by offering access to new markets as they work to reduce costs and fuel consumption by grounding inefficient aircraft and scaling back unprofitable routes.
