Introducing Chicago

Steely skycrapers, top chefs, rocking festivals – the Windy City will blow you away with its low-key cultured awesomeness

Art & Architecture

It’s hard to know what to gawk at first. High-flying architecture is everywhere, from the stratospheric, glass-floored Willis Tower to Frank Gehry’s swooping silver Pritzer Pavilion to Frank Lloyd Wright’s stained glass Robie House. Whimsical public art studs the streets. So you’re walking along and wham, there’s an abstract Picasso statue that’s not only cool to look at, you’re allowed to go right up and climb on it. For art museums, take your pick: impressionist masterpieces at the massive Art Institute, psychedelic paintings at the mid-sized Museum of Mexican Art or outsider drawings at the small Intuit gallery.

Chowhounds’ Delight

Loosen the belt. You’ve got a lot of eating to do. On the menu: peanut butter and banana topped waffles for breakfast (at Stephanie Izard’s Little Goat), a fig and goat cheese slathered elk sausage for lunch (at Hot Doug’s hot dog shop), and 20 courses of centrifuged, encapsulated molecular gastronomy for dinner (at Grant Achatz’s Alinea).

You can also chow a superb range of ethnic eats from Vietnamese pho to Mexican carnitas, Polish pierogi and Swedish almond tarts. Still hungry? Order a late-night deep-dish pizza.

Rollicking Festivals

Chicago knows how to rock a festival. Between March and September it throws around 200 shindigs. The specialty is music. Blues Fest brings half a million people to Grant Park to hear guitar notes slide and bass lines roll, all for free. During Lollapalooza’s three-day mega-party, rock bands thrash while the audience dances in an arm-flailing frenzy. Smaller, barbecue-scented street fests take place in the neighborhoods each weekend – though some rival downtown for star power on their stages (oh, hey, Olivia Newton-John at Northalsted Market Days).

Why I Love Chicago

By Karla Zimmerman, Writer

I’ve lived in the city for 25 years, and I never get bored. There’s something groovy going on any night of the week. Like tonight: should I see the Grant Park Orchestra playing Shostakovich’s 5th Symphony in Millennium Park. or a guitar-drum duo called Earring at Empty Bottle? I love that Tibetan dumplings, Mexican carnitas and crème brûlée donuts are all equally, easily accessible from local eateries. I love how total strangers sitting next to each other in a bar watching a Blackhawks game become high-fiving pals by evening’s end. Chicago really is my kind of town.

Sports Fanatics

Chicago is a maniacal sports town, with a pro team for every season (two teams, in baseball’s case). Watching a game is a local rite of passage, whether you slather on the blue and orange body paint for a Bears football game, join the raucous baseball crowd in Wrigley Field ‘s bleachers, or plop down on a bar stool at the neighborhood tavern for whatever match is on TV. Count on making lots of spirited new friends. Should the excitement rub off and inspire you to get active yourself, the city’s 24 beaches and 580 parks offer a huge array of play.

Boston, USA – Lonely Planet #travel #itinerary #template

Introducing Boston

Boston’s history recalls revolution and transformation, and still today it is among the country’s most forward-thinking and barrier-breaking cities.

Why I Love

By Mara Vorhees, Author

Boston is wicked smaaht. I love that Boston is motivated not by money or politics, but by learning. The academic institutions are a source of innovative art, architecture and ideas that we all benefit from. The students provide a renewable source of energy and vibrancy that permeates the city. Yet for all the fancy buildings and big ideas, Boston is still a city of neighborhoods and local people. The students may or may not be here in four years, but my neighbors are here for the long haul. They are the cogs that keep the city running, moving, growing, remembering the past and creating the future.

Art & Architecture

The arts have thrived in Boston ever since the 19th century, when this cultural capital was dubbed the Athens of America. Certainly, the intellectual elite enjoyed their fine paintings and classical music, but they were also dedicated to spreading the cultural wealth, establishing museums, libraries and symphony orchestras. Today the lucky residents of (and visitors to) Boston benefit from their largesse. These venerable institutions play an integral role on Boston’s cultural stage, which has significantly expanded to include dynamic contemporary art and music scenes.

Sports

‘Fanatic’ is no idle word here. Boston fans are passionate about sports. And with the four-time world-champion Patriots, the long-overdue World Series–winning Red Sox, the winningest basketball team in history, the Celtics, and the highly successful and historic hockey team, the Bruins, there is a lot to be passionate about. Boston’s college teams also inspire fierce loyalties and staunch rivalries. No less spirited is the country’s oldest and most celebrated running event, the world-famous Boston Marathon, and the world’s largest two-day rowing event, the Head of the Charles Regatta.

Food

A word of advice: when in Boston, eat as much seafood as possible. Local specialties include the ‘sacred cod,’ fresh steamed lobster, oysters on the half-shell and thick, creamy chowder. You can eat seafood around the city, but especially in the fish-centered Seaport District, where it’s accompanied by spectacular harbor views. The creatures of the sea are your top priority, but don’t miss the chance to devour delicious servings of pasta in the North End and to sample spicy Asian dishes in Chinatown. Trendy fusion restaurants draw on all of these eclectic influences to present contemporary cuisine that is uniquely Boston.

History

For all intents and purposes, Boston is the oldest city in America. And you can hardly walk a step over its cobblestone streets without running into some historic site. The Freedom Trail winds its way around the city, connecting 16 historically significant sites. These are the very places where history unfolded: from the first public school in America to Boston’s first church building to sites linked to America’s fight for independence from Britain – Boston is, in effect, one enormous outdoor history museum.

The Best Cheap Hotel Chains in the USA

Consumer Reports checks out the cheap hotel and motel chains most glossy travel mags ignore.

Hampton Inn Downtown Miami

Usually when Consumer Reports magazine gets detailed feedback from its subscribers, it s concerning physical items like cars, washing machines, and TVs. They do look at service industries as well though, including hospitality, and in a recent issue they took a close look at results on hotels.

What I liked about this one was the depth. They didn t just focus on the big business and luxury chains like most travel magazines do. They ran through four classes of hotels, down to humble names like Econolodge and Motel 6. After all, in the real world that the 99% inhabit, these chains often have a higher occupancy than the big boys, especially on weekends when the biz travelers have gone home. (Despite the impression you may get from the print  travel press, the average nightly room rate in the United States is generally around $100.)

So who came out on top? I ll skip the top tier (Ritz-Carlton) and the second tier (Harrah s and Walt Disney Resorts). In the Moderate category, here s who got the highest ratings from readers:

2) Drury Inn Suites (Slogan: Where the extras aren t extra. )

At the bottom were Quality Inn, Clarion, and Ramada.

In the Budget category, there were seven entries. Here are the top three:

1) Microtel (also owned by Wyndham)

3) Super 8 (also owned by Wyndham)

In order, the others were Day s Inn, Motel 6, Econolodge, and America s Best Value (which apparently isn t).

The ones that ranked the highest usually got a top score in the comfort category and check-in was a big factor as well.

Keep this list in mind if you re booking online or perusing a coupon book you pick up at a rest stop something I strongly advise on road trips where you want to stay flexible. Remember though that the individual hotels are usually franchises or independently owned in some other fashion. There s a business arrangement there, but the brand you see on the sign doesn t mean the Super 8 in Long Beach is the same as the Super 8 in Topeka. For budget motels, newer is generally better, all else being equal. These are not places built to still look good 200 years from now. Or even 25.

Otherwise, the quickest route to the best deals online is usually with Trivago since they pull info from multiple booking sites.

Don t forget about the opaque booking sites.

Interestingly though, Consumer Reports basically said you should throw all this out the window if you want a great deal instead of just a good one: their advice was to book through Hotwire or Priceline whenever your plans are secure. They tried their best to top the deal they got through Hotwire through every means possible including calling the front desk to request a discount but couldn t come close. They paid $133 for a high-end Chicago hotel in the location they wanted. The best price they could get on the same hotel, same night booking it any other way? $230. As I ve said before, if you re not using sites like this, you re paying far more than you need to and far more than that cheerful couple in the room next door if that gets your competitive juices flowing. You don t have to go in blind either. Use message board sites like BetterBidding, BiddingForTravel, and BidLessTravel to figure out what you ll probably get in each star category.

Travel Around USA

The United States Of America

The United States of America is a large country in North America, often referred to as the “USA”, the “US”, the “United States”, “America”, or simply “the States”. It is home to the world’s third-largest population, with over 310 million people. It includes both densely populated cities with sprawling suburbs, and vast, uninhabited and naturally beautiful areas.

The United States is made up of many diverse ethnic groups and its culture varies greatly across the vast area of the country and even within cities – a city like New York will have dozens, if not hundreds, of different ethnicities represented within a neighborhood. Despite this difference, there exists a strong sense of national identity and certain predominant cultural traits.

United States has literally thousands of distinct cultural traditions. One will find Mississippi in the South to be very different culturally from Massachusetts in the North.

An economical US trip is possible, but it is very, very easy to spend much more than you bargained for, no matter what your travel style. Mode of transportation is a big factor, as is destination: US cities don t chip away at budgets, they jackhammer them into pieces.

Only the extremely thrifty will spend less than $100 a day. A comfortable mid-range budget typically ranges from $175 to $225 a day; this usually gets you a car, gas, two meals, a good hotel and a museum admission or two. Spending over $300 a day isn t hard: just splash out a few times, drive a lot, and stay, eat and whoop it up in New York. Chicago. San Francisco etc.

We define a midrange hotel very broadly (as $80 to $200). in rural areas, $100 buys a princely night s sleep, but in some cities, clean places start at $200. The same math holds for meals.

To travel on the cheap, plan on camping or hosteling ($15 to $25 a night), cooking some of your own meals, and touring by bus. It s not hard, but it limits your flexibility and it s slower (which isn t so bad). Be wary of budget motel come-ons; the sign might flash $39, but it s probably for a single and won t include tax.

Traveling by car is often a necessity. A rental is a minimum of $40 a day (type of car, tax and level of insurance can push it higher), plus gas. Planning the great American road trip? Petrol could cost more than the car itself (say, another $20 to $40 per day).

Mainly, don t forget the second part of that travel chestnut: after you halve your clothes, double your estimated budget, and it ll work out fine.

Tipping is standard practice across America. In city restaurants, tipping 15% of the bill is expected; less is OK in an informal diner, while top-end restaurants expect 20%. Bartenders expect $1 per drink. Taxi drivers and hairdressers expect 10% to 15%. Skycaps at airports and porters at nice hotels expect $1 a bag or so. It s polite to leave a few dollars for the hotel maid, especially if you spend several nights.

Cash

The stable US dollar aka greenback, simoleon or buck is the only currency generally accepted in the country, though a few places near the Canadian border also accept Canadian dollars.

The US dollar is divided into 100 cents ( ). Coins come in denominations of 1 (penny), 5 (nickel), 10 (dime), 25 (quarter), the seldom-seen 50 (half-dollar) and the $1 coin. Quarters are most commonly used in vending machines and parking meters. Bills come in $1, $2 (rare), $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100 denominations.

ATMs

ATMs are available 24/7 at most banks, and in shopping centers, airports, grocery stores and casinos. Withdrawing cash from an ATM using a credit card usually incurs a fee ($1 to $3), but if your home bank account is affiliated with one of the main worldwide ATM networks (Plus, Cirrus, Exchange, Accel), you can sometimes avoid the fee by using your bank card. The exchange rate on ATM transactions is usually as good as you ll get anywhere.

Check with your bank or credit card company for exact information about using its cards in stateside ATMs. If you will be relying on ATMs (not a bad strategy), bring more than one card and carry them separately.

Credit cards

Major credit cards are almost universally accepted. In fact, it s almost impossible to rent a car or make phone reservations without one (though some airlines require your credit card billing address to be in the USA a hassle if you re booking domestic flights once here). It s highly recommended that you carry at least one credit card; Visa and MasterCard are the most widely accepted.

Carry copies of your credit card numbers separately. If your credit cards are lost or stolen, contact the company immediately:

Taxes

Sales tax varies by state and county; check out state sales taxes at Sales Tax Clearinghouse (thestc.com/STRates.stm ). Hotel taxes vary by city.

Traveler s checks

Because of ATMs, traveler s checks are becoming obsolete except as a trustworthy backup. If you carry them, buy them in US dollars; local businesses may not cash ones in a foreign currency. Keep a separate record of their numbers in case they are lost or stolen. American Express traveler s checks are the most widely accepted.

Foo d

Food is much more than a mere means of subsistence. It is filled with cultural, psychological, emotional, and even religious significance. It defines shared identities and embodies religious and group traditions.

Today, food tends to play a less distinctive role in defining ethnic or religious identity. Americans, regardless of religion or region, eat bagels, curry, egg rolls, and salsa, and a Thanksgiving turkey. Still, food has become a class marker. For the wealthier segments of the population, dining often involves fine wines and artistically prepared foods made up of expensive ingredients. Expensive dining has been very subject to fads and shifts in taste. Less likely to eat German or even French cuisine, wealthier Americans have become more likely to dine on foods influenced by Asian or Latin American cooking.

Food also has assumed a heightened political significance. The decision to adopt a vegetarian diet or to eat only natural foods has become a conscious way to express resistance to corporate foods. At the same time, the decision to eat particular foods has become a conscious way to assert one’s ethnic identity.

Dedicated in 1886, “Liberty Enlightening the World” (known as The Statue of Liberty) is a gift from France to the United States of America to commemorate the 100-year anniversary of the birth of liberty in the US. and the end of slavery after the Civil War. She has since become a universal symbol of freedom, embraced by advocates of self-government the world over.

The American bald eagle was adopted as the national bird symbol of the United States of America in 1782. The bald eagle ( Haliaeetus Leucocephalus ) was chosen for its majestic beauty, great strength, long life, and because it’s native to North America. In the wild, an eagle will live 30-35 years (up to 50 years in captivity). A full-grown bald eagle has a wingspan up to 7 feet. They fly up to 30 miles an hour and can dive at 100 miles an hour! Eagles feed primarily on fish, supplemented by small mammals, waterfowl, and carrion.

As the world’s only superpower and biggest economy by a huge margin, almost everyone on the planet knows something about the USA, even if they’ve never been. The Statue of Liberty, the Empire State, the Hollywood sign, Las Vegas neon, Golden Gate and the White House have long been global icons, and American brands and images are familiar everywhere, from Apple computers and Levi’s to Coca-Cola and hot dogs. Yet first-time visitors should expect some surprises. Though its cities draw the most tourists – New York, New Orleans, Miami, Los Angeles and San Francisco are all incredible destinations in their own right – America is above all a land of stunningly diverse and achingly beautiful landscapes. In one nation you have the mighty Rockies and spectacular Cascades, the vast, mythic desert landscapes of the Southwest, the endless, rolling plains of Texas and Kansas, the tropical beaches and Everglades of Florida, the giant redwoods of California and the sleepy, pristine villages of New England. You can soak up the mesmerizing vistas in Crater Lake, Yellowstone and Yosemite national parks, stand in awe at the Grand Canyon, hike the Black Hills, cruise the Great Lakes, paddle in the Mississippi, surf the gnarly breaks of Oahu and get lost in the vast wilderness of Alaska. Or you could easily plan a trip that focuses on the out-of-the-way hamlets, remote prairies, eerie ghost towns and forgotten byways that are every bit as “American” as its showpiece icons and monuments.

The sheer size of the country prevents any sort of overarching statement about the typical American experience, just as the diversity of its people undercuts any notion of the typical American. Icons as diverse as Mohammed Ali, Louis Armstrong, Sitting Bull, Hillary Clinton, Michael Jordan, Madonna, Martin Luther King, Abraham Lincoln, Elvis Presley, Mark Twain, John Wayne and Walt Disney continue to inspire and entertain the world, and everyone has heard of the blues, country and western, jazz, rock ’n’ roll and hip-hop – all American musical innovations. There are Irish Americans, Italian Americans, African Americans, Chinese Americans and Latinos, Texan cowboys and Bronx hustlers, Seattle hipsters and Alabama pastors, New England fishermen, Las Vegas showgirls and Hawaiian surfers. Though it often sounds clichéd to foreigners, the only thing that holds this bizarre federation together is the oft-maligned “American Dream ”. While the USA is one of the world’s oldest still-functioning democracies and the roots of its European presence go back to the 1500s, the palpable sense of newness here creates an odd sort of optimism, wherein anything seems possible and fortune can strike at any moment.

Indeed, aspects of American culture can be difficult for many visitors to understand, despite the apparent familiarity: its obsession with guns; the widely held belief that “government” is bad; the real, genuine pride in the American Revolution and the US Constitution, two hundred years on; the equally genuine belief that the USA is the “greatest country on earth”; the wild grandstanding of its politicians (especially at election time); and the bewildering contradiction of its great liberal and open-minded traditions with laissez-faire capitalism and extreme cultural and religious conservatism. That’s America: diverse, challenging, beguiling, maddening at times, but always entertaining and always changing. And while there is no such thing as a typical American person or landscape, there can be few places where strangers can feel so confident of a warm reception.

Travel Insurance

Visiting the USA can be an exciting and rewarding experience, but it can become very unpleasant and challenging when sickness or injury occurs and medical services or medical evacuation is needed. Medical care is excellent in most parts of the US, but it can be very expensive and even astronomical for cases of critical illness. Many travelers purchase supplementary international medical insurance or travel insurance to avoid the staggering costs that might result from serious sickness or injury on their trip.

When you are planning your trip, it is a good idea to contact your primary healthcare provider or insurer in your home country to determine if you are covered and under what circumstances and to what extent while traveling abroad. You may be surprised to find that your health care provider offers little or no protection while traveling in the USA. If this is the case, it might be wise to purchase international travel insurance.

Types of Insurance

Many people are familiar with flight accident insurance. which pays you a large sum of money if you are killed or seriously injured in an air accident. This type of insurance policy normally does not cover any medical expenses resulting from illness or other types of accidents while traveling.

Travel agencies frequently offer travel protection plans or trip cancellation insurance. These usually cover the cost of travel expenses should you be forced to cancel your vacation due to accident, illness or certain other causes. They often cover travel assistance services, protection for lost or damaged baggage and limited medical coverage. There may or may not be a deductible or co-pay for covered medical expenses.

International Medical Insurance is short or long term insurance designed to reimburse you for medical expenses incurred while traveling or living in a foreign country. Maximum policy coverage is usually large enough to cover major medical expenses such as emergency surgery and extended hospital stays. “American Style” of international medical insurance coverage is usually subject to a specified deductible and co-insurance or co-pay. Plans may include emergency evacuation, reunion, and repatriation benefits as well as other travel assistance services. The plan coverage may be single trip, multi-trip or renewable.

Definition of terms

Maximum Policy Coverage. The maximum amount of money that the insurance provider will pay for covered expenses. It may be an overall maximum or an amount for each accident or illness.

Deductible. (also known as excess ) This is the amount of medical costs that you must pay before the insurance provider starts paying. It may be an annual amount, an amount for the duration of the policy or an amount for each incident. Example: a $50 deductible would mean that you must pay the first $50 of medical expense before the insurer begins to pay.

Co-Insurance or Co-Pay. This is the percentage or amount of medical expense that you must pay after the deductible is paid. Example: a co-insurance of 20% or an 80/20 co-pay means that the insurance company will pay 80% of the charges and you will pay 20% of the charges after you have paid the deductible.

Exclusions. These are medical expenses that the insurance company will not pay. These usually include expenses arising from the illegal use of drugs, medical conditions that existed prior to the purchase of the insurance, and medical costs arising from participation in dangerous activities or high-risk sports.

Emergency Medical Evacuation. covering the expenses for sending an injured or ill person home or transporting him/her to a place where appropriate medical care can be obtained.

Emergency Reunion. covers the expenses of bringing a family member to the injured or ill person during a medical emergency.

Repatriation Benefits. cover the cost of returning a deceased traveler’s body to the homeland.

Single Trip Plans. cover one trip.

Annual/Multi-Trip Plans. cover all trips taken within one year.

Individual Plans. cover one person.

Family Plans. cover all members of a family traveling together.

Travel Insurance Online

There are many websites that offer travel insurance online. Most sites offer only one type of coverage – either a travel protection plan or international medical insurance – or they offer coverage to citizens of a particular country. Only a few insurers offer a variety of plans for travelers from all countries.

USATourist.com has affiliated with Travel Insurance Center to bring you a wide selection of travel protection plans and International Medical Insurance. Look at their web pages and check their prices. You can purchase your travel insurance on-line from their web pages.

Squaremouth is another website where you can compare hundreds of travel insurance plans from top providers and buy immediately. Compare travel insurance or use their comprehensive research features. They also have insurance for visitors to the USA, immigrants, US visa workers, and foreign students who study inside the US. Click here to purchase travel insurance!

USA travel insurance

A country as vast and diverse as the USA has something for everyone. Whether your American adventure takes you on a coast-to-coast road trip, on a fun family holiday to Disneyland or to the bright lights of Vegas – you won’t be disappointed. Therefore, the last thing you want to be worrying about is travel insurance.

Get a new travel insurance quote now

What is the minimum level of cover I should go for?

Thinking about what could potentially go wrong is not likely to be top of your list when planning your trip to America. Unfortunately some things are beyond your control, and if they do go wrong, you need to make sure you’re fully prepared.

Travel insurance will give you peace of mind that you are covered for eventualities such as illness, lost baggage and stolen items – but it’s essential that you check the amount of cover your policy entitles you to.

Don’t make the mistake of thinking that you’ll automatically be covered for every eventuality – often things like baggage have to be added on to policies. Whatever you do, don’t scrimp on cover. You may have to pay a bit extra to have the added peace of mind a more comprehensive policy offers, but paying a few additional pounds now could save you thousands in the long run.

When travelling to the States it is imperative you check the amount of medical cover you get .This is because healthcare in America is notoriously expensive, so you’ll need to make sure the amount of cover the insurer offers is high enough.

For example, if you were you to fracture your hip while on the other side of the Atlantic, you could expect it to set you back an extortionate 22,000. Therefore make sure when you are choosing your policy that this is a priority. MoneySupermarket recommends medical cover of at least 2million.

What type of policy is best for the USA?

There are different types of policy so you’ll need to decide which is going to be the most useful for you. A single trip USA policy is recommended if you’re only likely to be taking one or two holidays in the year. But if you’re planning on more than this then an annual multi-trip could be more economical. It’s also useful if you’re someone who is likely to take advantage of last minute deals. You’ll be covered for 12 months and can take an often unlimited number of trips a year. Bear in mind that annual travel insurance can be European only or worldwide so make sure you have the right one for you.

There is also the option of family insurance which takes the hassle out of having to sort out separate policies for each person – the last thing you’ll have time for when trying to organise everyone ahead of your holiday. Some companies offer a ‘kids go free’ option so this is definitely worth looking into.

Tips for travelling with kids

Going away on a family holiday takes more planning than if you are alone or in a couple, especially if you have young children to keep entertained during a lengthy flight. Here are some tips to keep them occupied:

  • Don’t pay extra for a priority boarding option. If you’re not flying with an airline where you have designated seats, most will allow parents with children to get on to the plane first so you can sit together anyway. However, make sure you double check with your airline before setting off.
  • Flight times to the USA can be long – especially to the West coast. Therefore make sure you have plenty for the kids to do. Magnetic board games, colouring books and handheld computer games should help hold their interest. Make sure you bring snacks to have on the way – not only can in-flight food be expensive; it can also be quite limited.
  • Make sure your children are drinking plenty of water throughout the flight to prevent dehydration.
  • Even if your kids have started walking, bringing a buggy on holiday can help as you may under-estimate the amount of walking you’ll do, especially if you are going to theme parks and attractions. It also means you have somewhere for them to rest or sleep in if you are having long days.
  • For older children, suggest they do a holiday scrapbook diary so they can write about what they are doing each day and collect souvenirs/leaflets/tickets to stick in. It means they’ve got an activity to concentrate on at the end of the day – and you get some peace!
  • When going for days out, make sure at the beginning of the day you decide on a meeting point if anyone gets lost. With all the excitement and crowds at children’s attractions it’s a good preventative measure to have in place.
  • Remember to always make sure you and your children wear sun-cream when going out for the day. Some children’s sun-creams have in-built insect protection which offers further protection from things that could potentially ruin a day out.

How is it to find a policy with MoneySupermarket?

Finding a great deal on your USA travel insurance is easy with our comparison tool, just a couple easy steps and a few facts about your trip – such as the dates you will be travelling, where to and how many of you are travelling – and you’ll soon be receiving a variety of quotes from many UK insurers.

News and Announcements

The Winding Up and Dissolution of CUREE
A persisent lack of funding opportunities has led to the necessity of the winding up and dissolution of the CUREE organization. Strategies for trying to continue the non-profit corporation proved unsuccessful over the past several years, and this 2016 will be the last year of its existence.

Many have received research funding from CUREE over the past 28 years and have contributed to the success of multi-year programs such as CUREE-Kajima Joint Research, the SAC Steel Project, and the CUREE-Caltech Woodframe Project. Public education projects such as the permanent outdoor exhibition at the Golden Gate Bridge explaining engineering have also made a mark. But given the continuing funding shortages for university-based earthquake engineering research, it is time for the organization to conclude its operations.

Until the end of the year, all of CUREE publications are available at this website for free download. Please take advantage of this opportunity while it lasts. The online NISEE-PEER library at (http://nisee.berkeley.edu/elibrary/ ) will also provide long-term access to many of these publications.

A digital archive of the CUREE publications is being made available for FREE download. The archive includes publications from the CUREE-Caltech Woodframe, CUREE-Kajima Joint Research Venture, the NEES Nonstructural Project, and much more.

Because current standards address and allow only the use of BRBFs in all-steel frames, composite applications are not addressed in this Guide, but many of the same topics and considerations are applicable. [more ]

International Car Insurance #international #car #insurance #usa

#

Looking for info on expat insurance?

International Car Insurance

If you enjoy driving and value your independence, you’ll want to keep using a car – even when moving to another country, where you may need to get used to different traffic conditions. For expat motorists, car insurance is a big part of staying safe. Read our tips on international policies below!

Visiting Motorists

If you are just planning to take your car abroad for a while, e.g. on a preliminary fact-finding trip or extended business travel, your normal insurance policy will often suffice. Contact the insurance provider and ask what their coverage for international travel entails.

Frequently, international auto insurance policies switch to minimum coverage once you drive abroad. Car insurance for travelers is usually limited to a certain number of days as well. However, by investing a bit more money, most drivers can upgrade their policy for international trips. In other cases, insurance providers at your destination may offer temporary policies for visiting motorists. For example, you can buy short-term car insurance in the UK, but these products require higher premiums than the average quote for local vehicle owners.

If you cross the border in a motor vehicle, you could be asked at the point of entry to provide proof of insurance. Make sure to find out what the usual basic cover for foreign drivers is and carry your insurance documents with you. Most countries expect both national and international drivers and/or car owners to hold some kind of third-party liability insurance.

Proof of Insurance and the Green Card System

Motorists traveling within the EU don’t need proof of car insurance at all. If you register a car in one EU member state and buy the legally required cover, all official policies include basic coverage for other member states by default. Only in case of accident do you have to produce your insurance papers. Though it is no longer mandatory as legal proof within the EU, the so-called Green Card remains the most easily recognized document for international drivers.

Some other countries still expect foreign drivers to carry such a Green Card as proof of car insurance for border inspections or traffic police. These nations include: Albania, Belarus, Bosnia, Iran, Israel, Macedonia, Moldova, Morocco, Russia, Serbia, Turkey, and Ukraine. If you travel to one of these destinations, ask your local insurance company to issue you a Green Card beforehand.

Buying Motor Insurance Abroad

If you actually relocate to another country, things are a little different. If you don’t want to bring along your own vehicle, most company cars or rental vehicles come with an existing insurance policy. However, if you import your own car, an international insurance policy will only be valid for a limited period – e.g. as long as you can keep your foreign license plates, or so long as you are considered a visitor.

Once you count as a local resident or register your car, you generally need a new quote from a local insurance company. In many countries, third party liability insurance is a legal prerequisite for registering your car with the traffic authorities. For example, in the UK, driving or owning a vehicle without insurance coverage is a criminal offense. Even if the potential consequences are not as drastic as jail time, you should get insurance nonetheless.

Car Insurance Types

It’s now time to go auto insurance shopping. Don’t hesitate to contact several companies and compare their quotes and products. Regardless of where you live now, most kinds of car insurance differentiate between two or three policies.

Third-party coverage pays for all or most damage to other people’s property, as well as treatment of their injuries sustained in an accident you caused. Third party plus extra (e.g. third party plus fire and theft) enables you to file a claim if your car is stolen, or damaged by severe weather conditions and the like. Comprehensive coverage offers – as the name implies – a broad policy that will also reimburse you for having your vehicle repaired if you were responsible for an accident yourself.

You should always read the fine print and check which provisions a specific quote includes. Will the insurance company pay for a courtesy car? Are your passengers covered too? Do you get money for legal expenses? The list goes on.

Paying Premiums

Also find out which factors your premiums depend on. Quotes vary according to…

  • age
  • how many people use the car
  • gender (The EU introduced unisex tariffs in 2012, but other countries might consider young male drivers a risk factor.)
  • deductible (i.e. how much you pay out of your own pocket before filing a claim)
  • where you keep the car over night
  • type of vehicle (e.g. vintage car, sports car)
  • driving experience and insurance record

The latter can pose a particular problem to expats. Insurance companies aren’t necessarily obliged to take your record from another country into account. But if you haven’t had any accidents back home, it could pay off to contact a potential provider. They may be willing to lower your premiums if you send in an official translation of your old insurance record.

Last but not least, be aware of when exactly the insurance coverage kicks in and when the premiums are due. In Germany, for example, motorists usually get temporary insurance papers for all travel involved in registering a car (e.g. driving it to the vehicle inspections office). Premiums are paid on an annual basis, but your car insurance company could make an exception and offer quarterly payments, etc.

Getting Advice

To compare various quotes for international or local vehicle insurance, contact an independent insurance broker or get in touch with the big national automobile clubs. They often provide their members with special offers for car insurance.

Automobile associations can also give advice on what to do in case of accident. International drivers should read up on traffic regulations and legal proceedings beforehand. In some places, like the UAE, it’s highly recommended to contact the nearest embassy or consulate immediately when you are involved in an accident. They can provide legal counsel if the police threaten to confiscate your passport or send you to jail until the matter is resolved.

Popular cities in USA

USA overview

The United States of America, sprawling across the middle of North America. includes 48 mainland states, Hawaii to the southwest and Alaska to the north. American Samoa, Guam, Marianas, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands are also part of US territories.

In this vast nation, breathtaking natural wonders compete for your attention with mammoth and fascinating manmade cities of towering steel and glass. Travellers arriving on flights to America have a huge choice of fascinating destinations to explore. The energy and creativity of New York City have made it the cultural, fashion and financial capital of the US. New England is steeped in history and blessed with beautiful scenery, especially in autumn when the changing foliage creates a spectacular blaze of colour. The Blues Highway, from New Orleans in Louisiana through Mississippi and Memphis to Chicago, is a classic road trip along the trail of America’s music legends.

Florida is about beaches and theme parks, from Disney World to nearby Orlando’s Universal Studios and SeaWorld.

On the West Coast, popular California boasts a spectacular rugged northern coastline and the majestic Sierra Nevada mountains. The Napa Valley wine region is a magnet for foodies and wine connoisseurs, LA is the home of Hollywood and San Diego enjoys a relaxed West-Coast vibe.

Less.

USA climate

Given its size, the climate varies throughout the US but some regions experience the changing seasons more intensely than others. The West Coast enjoys fine weather  year-round, while the Pacific Northwest Coast (Washington, Oregon) has cool summers and mild winters. The Midwest is known for its intense summers and winters and frequent tornadoes and thunderstorms, while Florida enjoys the warmest winters on the eastern coast.

When to fly to USA

There’s never really a bad time to catch flights to the US, but New York is most pleasant in spring and autumn. May and June are comfortably warm, while LA gets hottest in August and September.

San Francisco is  pleasant year-round, while Las Vegas is best enjoyed in spring and autumn. Orlando is teeming with families during US summer holidays (July and August), when temperatures can reach 37 degrees Celsius.

Cheap flights to the US are always found during the off season.

Getting around USA

Americans love their cars and their road trips, but there are many low-cost airlines, including no-frills leader Southwest, JetBlue, AirTran and Spirit Airlines to fly you around quicker.

If you’re intent on hitting the highways a la Route 66,  you’ll find all the major car rental agencies at most US airports, including Budget, Dollar, Hertz and Thrifty.

By bus: GotoBus.com has a handy online service for more than 100 bus companies and tours throughout the US, from budget to luxury options.

By rail: AmTrak (www.amtrak.com) covers the States and the major cities in Canada. Check online for routes and weekly specials.

USA insider information

Things to do in America

  • New York is a Mecca for shoppers, from mega-department and fashion stores to cutting-edge designer boutiques. Serious shoppers can maximize their time by taking a tour of one of the shopping districts. Shop Gotham’s two-hour walking tours (from about US$25) have been likened to having a shopaholic New Yorker show you the coolest places to shop.
  • Get a culture fix at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, which presents an annual program of mostly free recitals and concerts by students, faculty and guest artists.
  • Orlando’s majestic Harry P. Leu Gardens are a 20-hectare botanical oasis in the middle of the city. On site is a restored 19th century farmhouse, now a museum that evokes a time when citrus, rather than theme parks, dominated the region. (Gardens open daily from 9am-5pm; adult/child US$7/2; free admission on Mondays).
  • In Las Vegas start the day with an all-you-can-eat buffet breakfast at the “killer whale in a sea of buffets” – at the Spice Market Buffet at the Aladdin Resort & Casino.
  • Take a historic musical journey along the Blues Highway, from the Dixieland Jazz bars of New Orleans, to Memphis (and Elvis’s Graceland) and the blues trail along the Mississippi Delta to Chicago. The classic road trip takes you through the home of the blues. For information on festivals and events along the way, check out www.msbluestrail.org .

How much do you tip in America?

  • Between 15 and 20 per cent is standard in the US. Irate waiters have been known to follow non-tipping diners onto the street demanding an explanation.

“A friend who is a maven in finding outstanding resources, recommended Janice and Custom College Visits as we began the daunting college selection process. We worked with Janice on two fronts; to help create a list of colleges and to set-up meaningful colleges visits. The college visits were also a lot of fun for us as a family and very informative on so many levels. More importantly Janice helped make the college selection process manageable, not so daunting after all, and we felt no stone was left unturned in this important decision.

Tracy P. Parent of a New York City high school Senior

Thank you so much for planning such a wondrous experience for our son. The careful attention to detail was evident at every turn. Custom College Visits planning effort provided an appropriate path of discovery for our son and for us.

Michael C. New Jersey parent of a high school Junior

Hi Janice, Our trip was a thoroughly enjoyable family adventure! Thank you so much for the unique opportunities that you created for our daughter at each college. Meeting with a student at Harvard, was probably the most informative way to start the entire trip. She devoted a lot of time (in the rain) providing real college life details. She swiped us into dining halls, dorms & buildings that we might not have seen otherwise. The sophomore session at Princeton was wonderful! Thank you so much for everything that you did! We really were able to get the most out of each campus visit! Best, Julie

Julie, Parent of a high school Junior in Southern California

I found working with Custom College Visits a very positive experience. They were able to pinpoint colleges that were best suited for my daughter and the travel plans were well organized. In addition, they were able to set up an interview with a member of a college color guard, as my daughter had expressed interest in going to a school that had a color guard. I am very pleased with my experience with Custom College Visits, and would recommend them highly.

Mark L. Parent of high school junior in Northern California

Lili got accepted into her first choice school today (early decision): Boston University! She is thrilled beyond belief and relieved as well. We could not have done it without your help, it was invaluable. I think the High School Honors program she did there was probably very helpful and we would not have know about it without your forwarding the information to us. You rock! So, I am tipping my hat today to both you and Lili!

Kim T. Parent of high school senior in Kansas

I am happy to tell you that Nivi has been accepted early decision to Brown University. She is the first ivy leaguer in our family and we couldn’t be more proud! Her decision to apply was made easier because of the excellent experience she had during her customized tour via your company so thank you so much! We will be sure to recommend you to our friends here..

Gayathri S. Parent of high school senior Chennai, India

Thank you again for being so good at what you do. Our trip to the US was a huge success. I was on the verge of cancelling the trip but knew I couldn’t let my son down. That I even found you on the internet was a direct answer to my prayer for a miracle. The itinerary worked very well. I knew I was in good hands even before I boarded the plane to the U.S. and your attention to detail far exceeded my expectation.

Egbe O. Parent of international high school student

We had a wonderful trip to Philadelphia and Boston thanks to Janice Caine of Custom College Visits. She worked out an itinerary from start to finish. We visited 9 schools and it was as smooth as possible. Janice worked out tours and information sessions as well as meetings with tennis coaches. We have boy/girl twins and both were happy which is not an easy achievement. Not only did Janice work out the schedule but she recommended great schools in both towns. We would highly recommend her.

Phil S. Parent of high school students SF Bay Area

“Thank you SO MUCH for your involvement in the Splash Parents’ Program this weekend! I am just reviewing the feedback forms, and your presentation received rave reviews across the board; many parents cited it as the highlight of the program for them! Some verbatim quotes include: ‘The Planning and Preparing for College Visits was a great eye opener;’ Thank you for all the effort, energy, and enthusiasm you put into making the event such a success.”

Marisa M. Coordinator, Splash Parents’ Program Stanford University

Our college process was two-fold. It began with getting a jump start on the standardized testing, and not waiting until spring of junior year to focus. I believe our outcome was successful because we had a well-managed plan helped along by an expert, Janice Caine, of Custom College Visits.

Lisa L. Parent of high school students SF Bay Area

Happy New Year! Wanted to let you know that Charlie was accepted to Johns Hopkins Early Decision! Great news and very exciting all around. Thank you for all your help.

Beth A. Parent of a high school senior. Massachusetts

Cuba Travel USA provides flights to Cuba, hotel reservations in Cuba:

#cuba travel
#

Book your flights to Cuba, hotels in Cuba, and more with Cuba Travel USA.

Cuba Travel USA provides flights to Cuba, books hotels in Cuba, and provides tours in Cuba. Furthermore, we can tell you about activities available to you while in Cuba including Scuba diving, snorkeling hiking, sailing, fishing, golf, dancing, tours, etc. Learn about what to expect while in Cuba and get a more realistic version of Cuba/US relations than is typically portrayed in the US media.

Today’s Cuba offers travelers a rare opportunity to see a society very different from any other in the world. It is one of the most unique destinations one can visit today. In some areas, you will see some of the most picturesque beaches you have ever seen coupled with the beautiful turquoise sea that surrounds the country. While in urban areas such as Havana, you can see the best preserved colonial architecture in all of Latin America. The Cubans will welcome you with open arms. There is absolutely no ill will of any kind towards individual Americans. In my opinion, they are the friendliest people in the world, and a bit more surprisingly, they seem to be some of the happiest people in the world. Once you have visited Cuba for the first time, you will realize what an incredible place it is, and how delightful the Cuban people really are. Cuba is the safest country in the Western Hemisphere for travel!

Cuba could soon be the number one tourist destination for Americans in the Caribbean. It already is for Canadians. We urge you to get there before it becomes Americanized. Let’s be honest, there simply couldn’t be a better time to visit Cuba. First and foremost, the Cuban people are among the friendliest and most delightful people on this planet. We expect Cuba to be a very different place when Cuba and the US have normal relations again. It’s difficult to say when that might happen. The visa or tourist card comes automatically with every airline ticket to Cuba as long as you weren’t born in Cuba. Any American can go, only Cuban Americans traveling with a Cuban passport need a special visa or stamp in their Cuban passport.

Americans can travel to Cuba legally if you are a Cuban American, politician, journalist or if you have a research project regarding Cuba. Others including students, religious groups, and humanitarians can apply for a license from the U.S. Treasury Department Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC).

Cuba is located just 90 miles from Key West, Florida across the Straits of Florida. The island is 780 miles long, about 140 miles wide in some places and has four mountain ranges, 200 rivers, 1,000 lakes, swamps and fertile soil. Approximately 25% of Cuba is forest land. There are approximately 11.3 million Cubans, living in 14 different provinces and on Isla de Juventud.

Music lovers will truly enjoy Cuba, as Cuban music is currently sweeping the world with their salsa, son, rumba, jazz, etc. It is everywhere, in the night clubs, music venues, even on the street corners.

What a great time to be in Cuba! Parts of Havana have been declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites and many old buildings have undergone restoration.

No matter what you want to see or do in Cuba, anything is possible. History, architecture, culture, sports, incredible beaches, salsa dancing, outdoor recreation, eco tourism or the famous nightlife. that is what Cuba is all about at the start of the 21st century. The time to go is now!

Cuba Travel USA will debunk many of the myths and tell you everything they want or need to know about traveling to Cuba.

Boston, USA – Lonely Planet #travel #life #insurance

I just wanted to tell everyone thank you. My Daughter and I took the 4-day 3-night Bahamas package and we had a really wonderful time! We stayed at the Royal Islander Hotel and it was centrally located across the street from the International Bazaar, restaurants, and a casino. It was the first time for both of us and we learned a lot!

We really enjoyed our trip and would recommend it to others. Freedom Travel was Extremely helpful and always willing to answer questions. It was a wonderful experience.

Dear Freedom Travel,

Recently I returned from a Bahamas Cruise arranged by you and wanted to write and let you know how our trip went. The food on the ship, of course, was very good. We arranged one of the package tours through Discovery Cruise Lines onboard the ship. The prices were less than those listed on the internet and we had all of our tickets and arrangements handled before we reached the island. We stayed at the Royal Islander, which provided easy access to the International Bazaar and had breakfast each morning at the hotel and the food was very reasonable. We also ate at Ruby Swiss just down the street from the hotel; the atmosphere was warm with soft lighting and quality live music. The food was obviously fresh and cooked to perfection.

I would like to say that Freedom Travel did a good job on making the arrangements for the trip. I was especially pleased with the politeness and patience of the people in the office. They were always kind and helpful.

Thank You,

Esther P.

Dear Freedom Travel,

Thank you so much for our cruse to the Bahamas. It was absolutely wonderful! I loved the choices of hotels. We chose the Royal Oasis and it was so perfect there with the beach pool and waterfall. The people on the ship were so nice and treated us so well.

Thanks again for a wonderful trip.

Paul Jennifer H.

September

Thank You Freedom Travel for the wonderful cruise. Dreams really do come true. I had never been on a cruise before and if it wasn’t for Freedom Travel, I would of never have gone. Thanks to everyone there. Bahamas was a lot of fun and really beautiful. Thank you again.

Dear Freedom Travel,

The Grand Bahamas speaks for itself (GRAND). I had a great time from the start. We ate breakfast, played games and sat on the deck watching everything go by. The people on the ship were very nice and treated us like super stars. We tasted a lot of seafood and walked the beautiful beaches on the island, picking up shells and wearing flowers in our hair.

Yours truly,

T. Parker

We are loving our trip. It is more than we could imagine. The people are friendly and the food is great. My husband and I are already looking forward to our next visit. The weather and beaches are beautiful.

Visitors Insurance Reviews. Buy visitors insurance with confidence for your relatives

You must enable java-script to continue.

Hey guys. My husband and I are half way there. We recently got his EAD and SS card so I figured I would share our experiences thus far. Please ask us any questions you want because reading this site was a HUGE help for us.

8/29/2015 – Mailed our AOS Packet to the Chicago Lockbox for packages requiring a signature

8/31/2015 – USPS tracking confirmed Delivery in hindsight I wouldn t of paid extra for faster mailing

9/8/2015 – Email confirmation of package receipt

9/14/15 – Received paper receipts by mail. Priority date Sept. 1st.

9/18/15 – Received Biometrics appointment notification by mail. Date 9/28

9/21/15 – Completed Biometrics Walk In appointment at the Jamaica, Queens Application Support Center. Came at 1:30pm and the place was pretty empty. Security guard was firm but didn t give us any real problem. He had to check with his supervisor to let us go.

For a month we received no news and no updates. We called USCIS and they said that was completely normal not to have any updates in this period and for us to expect the EAD w/i 75 days of our priority date.

10/30/2015 – EAD/ Advanced Parole approved!

11/4/2015 Online update EAD mailed

11/7/2015 – Received EAD in the mail

11/9/2015 – Brought EAD card and Passport to Social Security office in Mineola, NY to apply for SS card Free

11/18/2015 – Received Social Security Card in the mail

11/19/2015 – Took EAD card, Social Security Card, Passport and Bank Cards to DMV to apply for learner s permit. Approved.

Big things we worried about and what we did.

My husband came to the US on a B1/2 visa and he overstayed by 10 years. During that time he did work without authorization, got a Tax Identification number and filed taxes 2 of those years, and actually received a return. haha. On the forms we were truthful and did admit that he worked and did put down where he worked. So far so good and we haven t had any problems. We havent had our interview yet.

FOLDER 1- LABEL I-130 AND WRITE NAMES ON IT

Form I-130 – Petition for Alien Relative

o Attach copy of petitioner s passport me, the wife

o Attach copy of marriage certificate

o Attach 1 passport photo of beneficiary and 1 passport photo of petitioner, write the name in PENCIL on back of photos and place each in a separate sandwich bag. I wrote in black marker the name of the person and what form picture belonged to on the sandwich bag.

o Attach Form G325A for Beneficiary and Form G325A for Petitioner. G325A.A.A.A.A. make sure it ends in A :

o Submit proof of bona fide marriage

We submitted APARTMENT LEASE and I made sure my landlord added my husband to the lease although she was only given financial information about myself. Be firm and just tell them its important. you don t have to explain yourself. Most will comply.

– Photocopy of health insurance card which had my husbands name on it.

-Photocopy of credit cards that had my husbands name on it. Discovercard and JCpenney will send you a second card if you add them as an authorized user. So on the same paper we copied my husbands card and my card which had the same number on it.

– Photocopy of joint bank statement which showed both of our names and address. Wells Fargo will open a bank account for someone without a SSN. I made sure to make deposits in his account from my bank account and pay some of our bills from his account to show a paper trail.

– Photocopy of about 30 pictures of us together in different situations wedding, pictures of him and my mom, pictures of us doing a backyard project, pictures of him and my best friend. if you don t have a lot of pictures just start taking pictures randomly together and write a short blurb describing the pictures.

– Place all supporting documents in a manilla envelope and label Proof of Bona Fide Marriage. Put in i-130 folder

FOLDER 2

Form I-864 – Affidavit of support under section 213A – Make sure to include a photocopy of your ENTIRE tax return for most recent two years INCLUDING all of your W-2 or 1090 s. Since my salary changed drastically from last year to the current year I also included copies of my last 6 months pay stubs.

FOLDER 3

Form I-485 – Adjustment of Status

o Medical examination report must be included in i-485

o Attach copy of birth certificate

o 2 passport size photos of the beneficiary. Follow the same instructions for the previous photos.

o Attach a copy of i-94, passport with all biographical data pages and visa pages copied.

Attach copy of marriage certificate which is the basis of the i-485

Form G-1145 e-Notification of Application/Petition Acceptance. Put this form as the first page in the i-485 folder.

Form I-765 Application for Employment Authorization no additional fee if filed together

Form – 131 Advanced Parole

Include 2 passport style photos of the Beneficiary. label and place in baggy as before

Form I-693 Report of Medical Examination and Vaccination Record separate fee paid to the civil surgeon. We paid around $130

For the medical examination. Look up all the age appropriate vaccinations that you will need. And then go to a free clinic or community sponsored clinic if you don t have insurance and get all those vaccinations or ask for a TITERS test which will prove that you already received those vaccinations and are immune. If your childhood copy is available bring it. Ask for a printed copy of the lab reports and vaccination record of all vaccinations you get. A copy of the report should be free or minimal cost. Dont say that you need the vaccinations for immigration purposes because insurance and free clinics are not allowed to provide that service just for immigration. Bring all of these records to your medical examination appointment because if you do not have these records they WILL CHARGE YOU EXTRA to do these test. A LOT EXTRA. I recommend starting the vaccination record process about 3 months before you plan to file.

Good luck guys. We are from Long Island so our interview probably won t be for a few months. Will update you about our interview.

Essential information for your trip to the USA.

If you can t do it in America, where can you? This place is the land of dreams, a collection of world-famous cities, vast countryside and snow-capped mountain ranges.

You could spend a lifetime exploring this exciting land. Whether you plan on catching some waves in California, or cruising off the coast of Florida, the list of things to do is endless.

Some information before you travel

Credit/debit cards are the most popular methods of payments in the US. Most restaurants/hotels will accept these.

ATMs are widely located in all major towns and cities.

It is a good idea to carry some cash on you if you plan on driving, as most toll booths don’t accept cards.

Tipping in the US is common. In restaurants and bars, tips are usually calculated as a percentage of the bill.

Anyone that offers a service will be expecting a tip, e.g. taxis, airport porters, bell boys and valet.

Train tickets USA

Train. Why traveling by train is smart choice? Just check online for train tickets USA or even train tickets Europe. There are great choice of cheap train tickets. Train ticket prices depends of comfort level You want during great train travel.

There are many reasons why people travel, whether for business or pleasure, and there are many ways to go. You can fly to your destinations, getting there in record time, but you miss out on any interesting things along the way. It really doesn t matter if your pilot comes over the loud speaker now and again pointing out that you are now going over some landmark, like the Grand Canyon for example, because at 30,000 feet, it just looks like a big scar on the landscape, and you might as well be seeing it from space.

Many people travel by car on vacations, trying to get to some far off attraction like a resort amusement park with the kids, but this presents many difficulties. Even if the trip isn t that long, you have to deal with the kids the whole way, and you can only do so many activities cooped up in the car. Another major problem with driving is even if you are going through some grand National Forest, or passing great scenery along the way, does the driver ever get to really see any of it? Of course not, they are too busy navigating, dealing with dumb drivers, and by the time they arrive at the destination, all the driver wants to do is crash and burn. What s the fun in that?

Why not travel in style, see sights that you would never see driving or flying, and have some real fun along the way?

You can do this simply by taking a train ride, as a unique alternative. There are many trips that are offered by going with train tickets USA, and if you plan your trip ahead of time, it is relatively the same price as a plane ticket, and much more economical than trying to drive, especially if you consider gas prices.

Imagine traveling to your destination, or even traveling just for the sake of traveling on some of our nation s railways. Trains can go where no roads can go, and take you to places you never dreamed were in America. It isn t hard to get tickets to any destination you want, and there are so many different packages and train tours that you wouldn t even imagine, not just in the USA, but also around Canada as well. You can even get the same kind of packages that Eurorail passes in Europe offer, paying for a tickets along a certain route, and being able to get on and off whenever and wherever you like.

There are many different reasons why taking a train is far better than any other kind of travel.

One is that you don t have to drive there yourself, so everyone gets a chance to look out the window and enjoy the scenery. It is faster than taking a car, and far more pleasurable than a plane. In many cases, you don t have to wait in long lines, because in this busy day and age, many forget just how cool a train can be. There are many accommodations on trains from private bunk cars, restaurant cars, and some even have special cars with clear ceilings for panoramic viewings.

Top 10 Things To Remember When Travelling To The USA #wholesale

Top 10 Things To Remember When Travelling To The USA

Planning a trip to the United States? You ll have a much better time and eliminate travel hassles if you remember to adjust to some of the peculiar American quirks. Here are the 10 key issues we advise looking out for.

The United States is one of the most popular travel destinations for Australians: more than 863,000 trips were made there in 2012, ranking it as our third-most popular destination (after New Zealand and Indonesia). US culture often seems familiar to us after a lifetime of imported TV, music, movies and games, but there are some peculiar quirks of travelling to the States which aren t always so apparent.

I ve been thinking about these issues in the run-up to our World Of Servers visit to TechEd North America these are problems that our winning bloggers are going to have to bear in mind. However, they re equally applicable to anyone travelling to the US. We ran a more basic version of this list back in 2010. but given the many changes since then an update seemed wise.

10. You ll pay more than the listed price

Despite Australia s proximity to China, many items are still cheaper stateside (clothes being one obvious example). The ongoing near-parity between the Australian and US dollar also makes shopping sprees very tempting. Have at it by all means, but remember one crucial point: unlike Australia, the price tags you see won t include sales tax. That will vary from state to state, with the typical rate hovering between 4 and 6 per cent. I usually assume a 10 per cent markup that s almost always an exaggeration, but it s an easy mental calculation and makes it simple to assess if a bargain is still a bargain post-tax. Picture: Douglas Muth

9. Don t make jokes to airport security

Yes, this rule applies in any airport, but the US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) can be particularly humourless. The process is annoying (you always have to remove your belt and shoes), but we have some sympathy here. People make jokes on an astonishingly regular basis about having bombs , something we highlighted by putting all the reported comments on a map. Having to deal with people carrying loaded firearms in hand luggage is also a daily occurrence. Tamp down your inner comedian and put up with life in the queue; it will be easier for everyone in the long run.

8. Stock up on dollar bills for tipping

I m not a fan of having to give dollar bills to shuttle bus drivers and add 15 per cent to every restaurant bill, but tipping is an inescapable fact of life in the US. Many minimum-wage jobs presume that tips will form a large proportion of overall income. In theory, that should lead to better service; in practice, that varies widely. But tipping is expected, and stocking up on dollar bills (the US has dollar coins as well but they re much rarer) is the easiest way to handle tipping the doorman who gets you a taxi. Note: some restaurants will automatically add a gratuity to your bill to make sure you pay it. Check that before adding anything extra yourself. Dollar bills picture from Shutterstock

7. International transit is not a thing

The US sometimes pops up as a transit stop en route to other countries (particularly Canada and South America). The bad news: if this happens, you will still have to clear US customs, even if you re immediately heading to another flight and your baggage is already tagged to your final destination. It s a nuisance and something that happens almost nowhere else in the world, but US airport design means it s never going to change. If you do book a trip with transit via the US, allow yourself an absolute minimum of two hours between flights, and make sure your bookings are connected, so that the airlines involved will be looking out for you. Departures picture from Shutterstock

6. Know your body scanner rules

Both Australia and the US now use body scanners to check passengers for banned items, but there are some key differences. In Australia, the scanners are currently only used for international flights and aren t used on every passenger, but you can t opt out ; refusing to be scanned will see you kicked out of the airport for 24 hours.

In the US, scanners are used for domestic and international flights, and everyone passing through the airport is subjected to them. However, you do have the option of asking for a pat-down scan instead. Personally I wouldn t bother the body scan is much quicker but the choice is there if you have health or privacy concerns. Picture: Getty

5. You won t hear airport-wide flight announcements

Australian airports are small enough that airport-wide boarding calls are usually made for every flight. That isn t the case at US airports: the only announcements that are made are at the gate itself, so you won t hear them if you re lurking in the shops or at a bar. Take note of the boarding time on your card and make sure you re at the gate on time. US flights are often overbooked, so you risk getting booted if you don t show up, especially if you don t have checked baggage.

Again, this isn t unique to the US, but it s worth noting. If you have access to an airport lounge, note that they typically don t make flight announcements for domestic flights either; international flights are often called, and some lounges will highlight boarding flights on a separate screen (as in the picture), but this depends on the airport and airline.

4. Your accent may be a problem

Americans are friendly folks, but many of them haven t travelled, and their only routine exposure to other accents is via South America. I might have an exaggerated view of this because I speak far too quickly at the best of times, but I ve often found it easier when ordering coffee or a meal to simply drop into an American accent rather than being repeatedly questioned. The mere process of having to remember to do the accent slows me down.

3. If you must lock your bag, use TSA locks

As well as scanning your body on the way in, the TSA also often inspects luggage after it has been checked in. If this happens, you ll find a note in your bag to that effect. However, if you have locked your bag, you ll know well before that, because the lock will have been broken open.

The only way to work around the lock ban is to use one of the TSA-approved locks. which can be opened with a master key. That means baggage screeners can inspect your baggage if it does set off security processes, but it will remain impervious to other outsiders. I m cynical about the usefulness of this there must be a lot of master keys around but if you like locking your luggage, it s the only way to do it.

2. Be sparing when using your phone

The US is no exception to the rule that mobile phone roaming rates will bleed you dry. Check out our top 10 tips to avoid roaming rorts for specific advice on how to minimise this problem. Free Wi-Fi is definitely your friend; it s increasingly common in US hotels, but check carefully as some hotels will charge a resort fee to cover it. If you want to acquire a pay-as-you-go mobile hotspot for data access in the States, we ve rounded up some of the better options. Hotspot picture from Shutterstock

1. Make sure you apply for an ESTA

Most Australians don t need a specific visa to travel to the US for holiday or business trips lasting less than 90 days. However, you do need to apply online via the Electronic System for Travel Authorization for electronic approval prior to your trip.

The process is relatively speedy and can be done entirely online, but it isn t free; you have to pay $US14, and payment via credit card is the only option. This may seem fiddly, but there is one advantage: if you have an ESTA, you only have to fill in customs paperwork on board your flight, rather than separate customs and immigration forms.

Apply for an ESTA well in advance of your trip; if you arrive at the airport and don t have an ESTA (or a visa), you won t be able to board your flight. An ESTA remains valid for two years. The official minimum time period is 72 hours.

How to Drive Across the USA Hitting All the Major Landmarks.

#major travel
#

Landmark Travel

FALSE

Example: [Collected via Facebook, January 2014]

what “major landmarks” many of the pins are supposed to represent, and how one could see “all the major landmarks” in the U.S. on a route that skips the entirety of New England and much of the interior of the country.

In fact, this map has nothing to do with being a guide for a sight-seeing trip to American landmarks. Rather, it traces the route taken by photographer Brian DeFrees in 2011 as he drove 12,225 miles around the U.S. crossing some 33 states in 53 days while snapping a photograph every five seconds with a camera mounted just below his car’s rear-view mirror.

As Brian noted in his trip summary. his goal was to travel to as many states as he could while visiting friends and family members, not just to hit “all the major landmarks” in the U.S.

Even though I had taken some fairly large road trips before 2011, this is the one I had dreamt about my whole life. In August of 2011 I quit my job of three years, ended the lease on my apartment and set off on the road by myself. My goal was to see as many states, friends and family members as I could. All while making the first USA Cross-Country Drivelapse video.

After the conclusion of his trip, Brian compiled about 6,500 of the 200,000 individual photographs he took during his journey into a five-minute “Drivelapse ” video tour of America. After it was released on YouTube in November 2011, the video quickly spread across the Internet and around the world:

This and other similar time-lapse videos by Brian DeFrees can be viewed on his DeFrees Productions web site.

If you have incurred a DUI in California, the best thing to do would be to hire an elite team of Los Angeles DUI lawyers to help you fight your charges, and we are here to ensure you partner up with your ideal paralegal.

Repeat Los Angeles DUI offenders may be denied application for a restricted license as well. The state of California takes all previous charges into account when issuing penalties for a new one. This may lead to a motorist being charged with a misdemeanor or felony DWI. All repeat DUI punishments are also affected by where the driver was issued the charge as well as the driver’s BAC level at the time of arrest.

Recent Amendments to California DUI Laws

As of 2011, California DWI laws have expanded the number of categories by which the Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) can immediately suspend driving privileges when the motorist is suspected of driving under the influence.

As of 2010, California law requires the mandatory installation of ignition interlock devices. The state also shortened the time period in which driving penalties are restricted, including those for repeat offenders. In order for the penalty period to be shortened, motorists must pay all required fees and file an SR-22 insurance form.

California Assembly Bill 91 – Requires that ignition interlock device manufacturers provide information to the Department of Motor Vehicles. Also requires the DMV to establish a pilot program in Alameda, Los Angeles, Sacramento and Tulare that requires a driver to install an interlock ignition device and to participate in alcohol and drug assessment programs.

California Assembly Bill 1165 (Zero Tolerance Law For Repeat Offenders) – Makes it unlawful for a motorist under probation for a violation to operate a motor vehicle with a BAC level of .01 percent or higher.

California Senate Bill 1190 (Ignition Interlock Devices) – Lowers the minimum BAC level at the time of arrest to allow a motorist to install an ignition interlock device on their vehicle as well as prohibits said motorist from operating the vehicle without the device.

California Senate Bill 1388 (Interlock Devices) – Effective July 2009, requires motorists to install an ignition interlock device immediately on their vehicles following conviction of violating DUI provisions as well as driving under a suspended/revoked license due to DUI-related convictions. The number of violations will determine the time period in which the device must remain installed.

California Assembly Bill 2802 (Reckless Driving) – Court must order DWI convict to participate in a program related to DUI education and treatment. Probation will be revoked if motorist does not enroll in the program.

California SR-22 Insurance Click here for SR-22 Insurance

If you have been convicted of drunk driving in California, you may be required to obtain a California SR-22 insurance policy. Also known as a California Proof of Insurance Certificate,” the SR-22 form is not a type of insurance, but a form of proof that you have certain types of insurance. It is filed by the driver’s insurance company to the state DMV stating that auto liability insurance is in effect for the motorist. It is typically required after a motorist has been charged with DWI, a number of other traffic offices, or an accident in Los Angeles, San Diego or San Francisco.

In California, if your license is suspended you are allowed to obtain a restricted license by the court, for which an SR-22 form may be required. If your auto insurance is cancelled, you will need to file for a new insurance plan within 45 days.

The Best Cheap Hotel Chains in the USA #inflatable #travel #pillow
