Vaccines and Medicines

You should be up to date on routine vaccinations while traveling to any destination. Some vaccines may also be required for travel.

Get travel vaccines and medicines because there is a risk of these diseases in the country you are visiting.

Ask your doctor what vaccines and medicines you need based on where you are going, how long you are staying, what you will be doing, and if you are traveling from a country other than the US.

When traveling in Nepal, you should avoid mosquito bites to prevent malaria. You may need to take prescription medicine before, during, and after your trip to prevent malaria, depending on your travel plans, such as where you are going, when you are traveling, and if you are spending a lot of time outdoors or sleeping outside. Talk to your doctor about how you can prevent malaria while traveling. For more information on malaria in Nepal, see malaria in Nepal.

Rabies can be found in dogs, bats, and other mammals in Nepal, so CDC recommends this vaccine for the following groups:

  • Travelers involved in outdoor and other activities (such as camping, hiking, biking, adventure travel, and caving) that put them at risk for animal bites.
  • People who will be working with or around animals (such as veterinarians, wildlife professionals, and researchers).
  • People who are taking long trips or moving to Nepal
  • Children, because they tend to play with animals, might not report bites, and are more likely to have animal bites on their head and neck.

There is no risk of yellow fever in Nepal. The government of Nepal requires proof of yellow fever vaccination only if you are arriving from a country with risk of yellow fever. This does not include the US. If you are traveling from a country other than the US, check this list to see if you may be required to get the yellow fever vaccine: Countries with risk of yellow fever virus (YFV) transmission .

For more information on recommendations and requirements, see yellow fever recommendations and requirements for Nepal. Your doctor can help you decide if this vaccine is right for you based on your travel plans.

You may need this vaccine if your trip will last more than a month, depending on where you are going in China and what time of year you are traveling. You should also consider this vaccine if you plan to visit rural areas in China or will be spending a lot of time outdoors, even for trips shorter than a month. Your doctor can help you decide if this vaccine is right for you based on your travel plans. See more in-depth information on Japanese encephalitis in China .

You may need a polio vaccine before your trip to China if you are visiting the Xinjiang province, especially if you are working in a health care facility, refugee camp, or humanitarian aid setting. This kind of work might put you in contact with someone with polio.

  • If you were vaccinated against polio as a child but have never had a n polio booster dose as an adult, you should get this booster dose. Adults need only one polio booster in their lives.
  • If you were not completely vaccinated as a child or do not know your vaccination status, talk to your doctor about getting vaccinated.

Hilton Scores a Victory Over Online Booking Sites, and What It

Hilton Scores a Victory Over Online Booking Sites, and What It Means for How Travel Will Be Booked

by Gary Leff on December 1, 2015

United Airlines used to offer last minute e-fares on their website, but stopped because they ran afoul of agreements with computer reservation systems to always display the best available fares through those sites.

Paying the computer reservation systems is costly, it s cheaper when airlines sell to you directly, so they used to offer bonus miles for doing so. And paying the online travel agencies is costlier still. Even though few airlines base commissions any longer (although Alitalia just re-introduced 1% commissions in Italy) they do pay based on volume.

Airlines have long paid less to the online travel sites than hotels. So hotels have gone to greater lengths than airlines in trying to get customers to book direct. Generally when you book on Expedia you still earn frequent flyer miles for your flights, and are eligible for elite status accrual and elite benefits. (Although it may not always be as clear what restrictions apply to the fares you re buying.)

Hotels on the other hand have:

    • Restricted points-earning (Hilton s official policy is no points at all, even for incidentals during your stay, when booking through a third party)
  • Restricted status-earning (major chains won t let your stay booked through most third parties count towards gaining or retaining status)

  • Restricted elite status benefits (Though Hyatt and Marriott generally honor elite status on third party bookings, other major chains do not)
  • During periods with hotel occupancy low, the OTAs had the greatest leverage. The major chain hotels were paying over 20% commissions, perhaps 25%, and independent hotels easily paid 40%.

But those commissions have been falling. With hotels full they have a stronger bargaining hand. They re able to pay lower commissions, and negotiate other favorable terms.

Hilton reports that it has successfully concluded better deals.

[Hilton CEO Chris] Nassetta said Hilton Worldwide won the right to lower the commissions it pays to online travel agencies such as Expedia and Booking.com.

Hilton Worldwide managed to eliminate last-room availability clauses and won the right to offer preferential pricing — lower rates than it gives to online travel agencies — to certain members of the hotel chain’s loyalty program, Nassetta said.

“We are done with all of our OTA negotiations, and we achieved our goals in every one of those pillars,” Nassetta said.

This likely explains Hilton testing discounts for HHonors members since they don t have to offer those same rates through online booking sites and can use those to incentive lower direct booking expenses.

Airlines, too, continually squabble with the online sites and computer reservation systems over how their fares are distributed. Lufthansa is currently imposing an extra charge for tickets through these systems, which makes them less competitive. It s hard to sort out the effect it has had on the airline, because their sales have also been affected by strikes. Airlines want online travel sites to work through their own, less expensive, direct channels. And they want everyone selling their ancillary products, at the lowest cost to the carrier.

When we see Expedia buy Orbitz after buying Travelocity we shouldn t just think of them as making consumer unfriendly moves, we should think of them as:

    1. Trying to preserve some of their leverage against travel providers who are eroding their margins.
  • Making defensive moves in anticipation of Google disrupting their business model.
  • That isn t to say that consolidation in the online booking industry is consumer-friendly. And consumer experiences vary. But online travel agency sites are hardly gaining market power .

    Vaccines and Medicines

You should be up to date on routine vaccinations while traveling to any destination. Some vaccines may also be required for travel.

Get travel vaccines and medicines because there is a risk of these diseases in the country you are visiting.

You can get typhoid through contaminated food or water in Madagascar. CDC recommends this vaccine for most travelers, especially if you are staying with friends or relatives, visiting smaller cities or rural areas, or if you are an adventurous eater.

You may need a polio vaccine before your trip to Madagascar.

You can get hepatitis B through sexual contact, contaminated needles, and blood products, so CDC recommends this vaccine if you might have sex with a new partner, get a tattoo or piercing, or have any medical procedures.

Rabies can be found in dogs, bats, and other mammals in Madagascar, so CDC recommends this vaccine for the following groups:

    • Travelers involved in outdoor and other activities (such as camping, hiking, biking, adventure travel, and caving) that put them at risk for animal bites.
    • People who will be working with or around animals (such as veterinarians, wildlife professionals, and researchers).
    • People who are taking long trips or moving to Madagascar
    • Children, because they tend to play with animals, might not report bites, and are more likely to have animal bites on their head and neck.

There is no risk of yellow fever in Madagascar. The government of Madagascar requires proof of yellow fever vaccination only if you are arriving from a country with risk of yellow fever. This does not include the US. If you are traveling from a country other than the US, check this list to see if you may be required to get the yellow fever vaccine: Countries with risk of yellow fever virus (YFV) transmission .

For more information on recommendations and requirements, see yellow fever recommendations and requirements for Madagascar. Your doctor can help you decide if this vaccine is right for you based on your travel plans.

5 free tools for VMware View VDI admins to try #vmware

5 free tools for VMware View VDI admins to try

Server-hosted desktop virtualization environments can be tricky. Unlike server virtualization. which is well entrenched in the data center these days, VDI can still be a relatively new concept to desktop administrators, who for the most part have been used to working with local PCs.

Much like server virtualization platform vendors, however, VDI vendors cannot be everything to everyone. There are usually gaps (some small, some large) that need to be addressed, and these usually get filled by third-party software companies and developers in the community. But after spending money on the VDI solution itself, convincing management to spend even more money to tackle these various gaps can prove difficult. I’ve asked around and decided to start compiling a list of free tools that might help with some of the challenges you’re facing with your VDI planning or implementation.

Here are five of my recent free VDI tool discoveries:

    Quest VDI Assessment

Even before you begin your journey into the world of desktop virtualization and VDI, IT departments should begin with a period of self-assessment to help analyze the potential benefits that can be achieved. Quest VDI Assessment takes a platform-agnostic approach in its analysis, and it allows you to more easily identify which desktops and users within the organization are best suited to each flavor of desktop virtualization, including VDI (hosted virtual desktops), local or offline VDI, Terminal Server (Remote Desktop Session Host), or application virtualization.

Quest VDI Assessment analyzes user behavior and desktop performance over time to build up a complete picture of application usage and resource consumption across the organization. Basically, it’s installed in your pre-VDI desktop environment, then it watches what the users do, determines which applications are being used, monitors the intensity (or lack thereof) of each user workload, watches for peripheral usage, and more. After collecting that data for 30 days or longer, it builds a nice report that identifies the best virtualization candidates for different virtualization technologies and uses the results to help build out an ROI model that is unique to the organization. If you haven’t done so yet, it can also help assess the viability of a Windows 7 migration.

This is no small freebie offering. Quest VDI Assessment is based on technology licensed from Liquidware Labs. a company with leading technology that was previously available with only a paid consultant. Quest is rebranding this technology and making it available as a self-assessment offering, for free.

However (you knew it was coming), there are a few things to keep in mind. Quest provides no formal tech support; any help will have to come from the Quest community site. But honestly, isn’t that usually to be expected from a free product? And although the tool is listed as freeware, the license key downloaded is only good for five days, so install it quickly after download. After that, you must contact someone at Quest to continue to use the software once it has expired. According to the company, an account representative will provide a new key that will preserve the data collected during the initial time period, but it will remain free and operate without restrictions on functionality, and it will support unlimited users.

    VDI Flash Calculator

If you don’t have the time or patience to wait 30 days or more for your free assessment, you might at least give Andre Leibovici’s online VDI Flash Calculator a shot. Remember, properly sizing your VDI environment is one of the most important aspects of creating a VDI infrastructure design. Without knowing and understanding the workloads and the types of users in your environment, you could be setting yourself up for failure.
