Budget your way to success

Budgeting sounds like a boring strategy used by our parents. For a long time, budgeting was considered the way to manage money because it helped people keep track of where their finances were going. But lots of people are choosing not to budget because it seems so needlessly complicated with little or not benefit. But there is a benefit to budgeting; the real trick is finding a budgeting method that works for you. Here is an excellent strategy to help you manage the money in your personal portfolio.

The first thing you need to do is create a budget. Creating a budget does not have to be restrictive, but it should be a guideline to help you manage your income and your expenses each month. The first thing you want to do is list all your expenses on a month-to-month basis. The next thing you want to do it list all of your income on a month-to-month basis. Then compare. Many people who have trouble saving find that their expenses are very close to their income. So what can you do?

One option you have is to reduce your expenses. This might mean going out with friends a little less or giving up on some luxury that you typically enjoy. Another option you have is to increase your income. Unfortunately, for many people, this is easier said than done.

One way that you can reduce your expenses and increase your income is by using a debt consolidation loan. By consolidating many outstanding debts that are due throughout the month into a single loan with a single monthly payment you will be accomplishing several things.

First, you will be reducing your monthly payment because you will be securing a larger loan and is spread out over a longer period of time. Second, you’ll be reducing the amount of interest you pay because you will be consolidating your many debts into one debt from one provider. Reducing your interest not only helps to reduce your expenses but also increases your income!

And if you are able to find some assets that can help you get a secured loan, you’ll be able to spread out your payment over a longer period of time and you will likely qualify for a lower interest rate because you have some security to offer the lending institution to back up the loan.

Now that you are actively pursuing a budget, you will need to find a way to continue to reduce your expenses over time. A secured loan will help you do that. But don’t forget that there are many ways you can also increase your income.

Congratulations! You are assembling a budget and getting control of your finances and at the same time you are reducing your expenses and increasing your income.

The cheapest way from London to Paris #israel #travel

#travel to paris

Which is the cheapest way to get from London to Paris – car, Eurostar, coach or plane?

Comments

There are many different ways to get to Paris. Today, we did a spot check comparison on as many of them as possible, including rail fares, plane tickets, car – including options by ferry or by Eurotunnel – and by coach.

We should sound a note of caution in that some tickets are for travelling on a Friday (see methodology below), often the most expensive day to travel, which will distort the results somewhat. But they give a sound indication of how budget-conscious travellers should plan their journey to the French capital, whether travelling in the short-term or several months down the line.

Methodology

Prices checked are for a single adult, with no discount cards

Prices were checked on the morning of Friday September 4, for full adult fare, both single and return journey (four days after outbound trip). Airfares are hand-luggage only.

We have not included the cost of airport transfers for Easyjet and Ryanair. But a return train ticket from Charles de Gaulle to Gare du Nord will cost about 20, and from central London to London Gatwick is at least £10, and likely to cost more, unless booked in advance.

What we have learned (or confirmed)

On the launch of its international routes three years ago, Megabus (megabus.com ) carved a reputation for value with its headline £1 fares. However, when we carried out this same research last year, we found that the cheapest coach to Paris was run by iDBUS (now rebranded as OUIBUS; ouibus.com ). But wait, there’s more: for 2015, Megabus has reclaimed its throne, again providing the cheapest route on wheels to the French capital.

Both budget coach companies trump the National Express arm, Eurolines (eurolines.co.uk )

It’s also worth noting that travel company’s websites have become pretty good at pointing you in the direction of the cheapest fare, so it’s no longer necessary to be suspicious they’re hiding the best value.

For Eurostar (eurostar.com ), Friday is an expensive time to travel: the cheapest fare available was often £30 more expensive than the same for the previous or following day (a Thursday or Saturday). This is particularly true when booking in advance.

The same goes for Eurotunnel (eurotunnel.com ), only to a lesser extent, with only a couple of pounds variation between the cheapest ticket available for next Thursday (£76) and Friday (£78). As per usual, the most anti-social travel times wins you the best deals.

P O Ferries (poferries.com ) is marginally more expensive than Eurotunnel in our study.

The cliffs of Normandy await ferry passengers Photo: Fotolia/AP

Eurostar booked well in advance is still very competitive – only £33.50 more than the cheapest return by coach. Plus, the coach services we surveyed had an erratic approach to advance bookings, with no clear timeline available, where Eurostar allows bookings 180 days in advance.

Obtaining one of the limited number of cheap seats on the Eurostar plays a large part in determining the size of your final bill (fail to book a discount seat on Eurostar and the prices rise steeply).

However, it costs similar to easyJet and becomes a much better deal once you take into account transfers to the airport.

For drivers, Viamichelin is a terrific website. As well as the route, it calculates your likely fuel costs, and tells you how much to expect to pay for tolls. Impressive.

Travel times vary for coaches surprisingly widely (up to two hours), and consider just how much you fancy eight hours in a coach before being lured by the prices.

Group travel can be an advantage. OUIBUS, for example, offers discounts for groups of more than 10. And as for travelling by car, if several (paying) people are in the same vehicle, it is almost without question the best deal of all no matter when you travel (without taking into account any additional fees for travel insurance/ roadside assistance).

Note too that the Man in Seat Sixty-One has an interesting option if you wish to travel by train, ferry, then train again. Surprisingly it s not the shorter route via Calais that is cheapest, but a longer way, via Newhaven to Dieppe. Read full details of his suggested train-ferry-train combination here

Travel insurance: pick your way to the best policy #travel #agents

Travel insurance: pick your way to the best policy

Y ou’ve booked the holiday, updated your summer wardrobe and checked the neighbours will water the plants. But have you bought travel insurance? If you are one of the millions turning to price-comparison sites to search for a policy the choice can seem baffling.

Cash logged into Moneysupermarket.com to search for a Europe-only annual policy to cover two adults and two children under 16. It offered 94 policies from just 22.80. The same search on Gocompare.com returned 95, from 24.64. The startlingly low prices are thanks to intense competition among an expanding list of providers.

However, table-topping names were mostly unrecognisable. We scrolled past a dozen or so before coming across a well-known brand. So how do you know you are buying from a reputable company?

Large insurers tend to trade under a range of different names, and an unknown brand could actually be backed by a company you have heard of. For example, Travelinsurance.co.uk is a trading name of InsureandGo, which is part of massive Spanish insurer Mapfre. You can check the about us section of a provider’s website to see who they are. Picking one that is part of a big insurer should give you peace of mind, says Malcolm Tarling of the Association of British Insurers.

There is a handful of standalone players, including Explorer Travel Insurance. Traveltime, Starttravel.co.uk, Planet Earth and goPanda. In this case check who underwrites the policy – this is the company paying in the event of a claim, says Tarling.

If you are buying through a comparison site, the brands are authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority and you are covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS).

In the unfortunate event you pick a small brand and it goes bust, the scheme will step in. We may first try to transfer the policy to another insurer, says a spokesman. If there is a claim already in process, we may be able to offer compensation, but this would be on a case-by-case basis.

Whether a provider pays out is what consumers really want to know. The Financial Ombudsman Service received, on average, 43 complaints a week in the year to April 2014, ruling in favour of the consumer in more than half the cases.

One of the most common reasons for a claim being rejected is when an insurer relies on a particularly restrictive or onerous term in the contract.

A spokesman for the ombudsman says: Should the worst happen, keep a note of any correspondence. Keep electronic copies of your policy saved to your email account so the documents can be accessed wherever you are in the world. Taking pictures of an incident is another great way to record what’s happened.

Complaint disputes make it important to consider how companies deal with customers. Look for 24-hour helplines, and check online forums to see if there are any comments about a brand.

Gocompare.com offers star ratings beside policies from independent financial researcher Defaqto. Some of the cheapest are only awarded one star out of a possible five. Consumer ratings are also a useful way of understanding which companies look after their customers. Of 20 travel insurers listed by consumer group Which? it only recommends Saga and Marks Spencer Bank based on customer feedback.

Fairer Finance, a service set up to help consumers choose the best financial products, ranks insurers based on what customers think of the brand, how good they are at handling complaints, and how transparent they are. The best score highly across all of these areas.

Among travel insurers LV=, First Direct, Tesco, Amex, M S and Saga are gold-rated, while Aviva, HSBC, Staysure and the AA are silver-rated.

It’s worth going to a comparison site first to see what the cheapest available policies are – but if you don’t see any of these brands it could be worth going to them directly, says James Daley, founder of Fairer Finance.

Before any search make a list of what cover you need in a policy, says Tarling. If you are unsure if the policy will pay out for your needs, you could also call a broker. A list of these is available at biba.org.uk. They can advise you of the right policy for your requirements.

Graeme Trudgill, executive director of the British Insurance Brokers’ Association, says: Numerous brands listed on comparison sites are actually brokers. You could give them a call to check the policy definitely covers your needs – they will have different types and strip down the cover to get a competitive quote.

Here are some relatively unknown insurers that may crop up: ■ Staysure: This is a specialist insurance broker for the over-50s known for being prepared to cover holidaymakers with cancer or other serious pre-existing medical conditions. Staysure has above average happiness and trust scores from customers on Fairer Finance – in spite of having the longest policy document of all travel insurers (at almost 38,000 words).

BigBlue Cover: Listed by Which? as offering attractive rates with a good level of cover for singles, family and couples. It is part of the larger Rock Insurance Group.

TopDog Insurance: Surprisingly, it isn’t a pet insurer. Cover is underwritten by Mapfre, which has a below average record on complaints handling, says Fairer Finance. In the last six months of 2013, the Financial Ombudsman received 310 complaints about Mapfre compared to 115 for Saga. Its policy documents are among the longest – at a little over 25,000 words.

Explorer Travel Insurance: It specialises in insurance cover for over 65s. It is listed by Which? as providing among the best value European single trip policies for those over 80 with a good level of cover.

What Is the Cheapest Way to Travel to Europe?

Consolidators

Airline consolidators routinely offer discounted international flights to Europe and other places. After purchasing the tickets in bulk, they are able to offer them at a substantial savings for the consumer. Flexibility and advance planning will yield the biggest savings.

Open-Jaw

Consider flying into one city and out of another. Many major European cities are in close proximity, within a few hours drive, and the potential savings could be significant.

Travel Agencies

This might seem like an obvious option, but the old stand-by travel agent still has some merit. A travel agency often has exclusive access to pooled airfare discounts and can pass those on to the consumer.

Chartered/Courier Flights

Charter and courier flights have cheaper fares, but the offerings of such flights have diminished greatly. Many restrictions apply as well, such as the need to live near a few choice departure cities, limit luggage to carry-on and fly with little notice.

Trains

Provided you’re in Eurasia or Asia in some instances, travel by train is possible. Affordable fares are available from Moscow to London and between other cities as well.

One Way Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is not just for holidays or business trips abroad. Some of the more inventive and, dare we say it, better companies offer a range of policies for all travelling scenarios, including domestic insurance, frequent traveller, and one way travel insurance.

But why travel one way you might ask? A one-way policy is perfect for those heading abroad who intend to return to New Zealand, but don’t have firm return dates or flights planned. Downunder Insurance offers two one way travel insurance policies; our Plan F policy covers non-residents heading off on a one way trip to their home country while the Plan G policy covers residents currently overseas but heading back home.

Click above for your One Way Travel Insurance quote

What Does One Way Travel Insurance Cover?

Travellers often question why they need travel insurance when their ultimate destination is often back to their homeland. Once home, they will then be able to access medical treatment and health care without it costing a cent, so they shouldn t really need to be insured for this trip. Or should they?

Many travellers forget the huge range of cover that a travel insurance policy offers. While medical insurance and repatriation is top of the list of priorities when travelling in strange countries, don t forget that companies like Downunder, who specialise in travel insurance, are well aware that travel plans don t always run smoothly, and being experienced travellers themselves have created a policy to cover all niggles and mishaps that can mar your journey.

Cover for Belongings, Valuables and Documentation

Cover for cancellation fees and lost deposits starts as soon as the policy is issued while cover for all other policy sections will begin on the day of departure. Cover ends once the journey is completed.

As well as covering cancellation fees and lost deposits, non-resident insurance provides essential cover for loss or theft of luggage and personal effects. It also covers delays of these items and loss or theft of travel documents, traveller s cheques and credit cards and any expenses incurred due to travel plans being delayed, including alternative travel expenses. In the case of an incident relating to a third party, where accidental damage occurs, personal liability cover is a must.

New Zealand In-Bound Travel

Cover for this sort of journey can be purchased overseas and Downunder have offices in several countries as well as easy access online. Policies include the same cover as non-resident travel insurance except for the period within a waiting date of seven days from the start date, during which time cover is not available for some aspects of the policy including medical expenses, cancellation fees, and lost deposits. Cover ends when the journey has been completed or on the end date on the insurance certificate, whichever happens first.

There are many different types of Visas available to suit the amount of time you want to spend away and the activities you will be doing. These include:

  • Working Visa
  • Holiday Visa
  • Working-travelling Visa

If you have a job offer in another country, then you can apply for a Working Visa. The means you will be allowed to enter and stay in another country on the condition that you have a firm job offer and you remain employed in that position.

Usually if you wanted to change jobs, your new employer would have to go through a thorough interview process to ensure that there were no native workers more suited to the position and confirm this with the immigration authorities.

A Holiday Visa means you can go away to another country for long periods of time without having to have a job waiting for you. This is often a popular choice for gap year students who wish to spend a significant amount of time travelling round a particular country such as Australia and Thailand.

A Working Travelling Visa combines both of the above. This is for people who wish to spend time in another country, aim to do some travelling but would also like to be able to work. You do not need a job offer to apply for this type of visa, but you are allowed to apply for work once you have arrived.

Visa applications for countries such as Canada, Australia, South Africa and New Zealand will usually require the following:

  • Proof of address
  • Copy of passport
  • Police certificate
  • Proof of funds
  • Medical declaration

Some countries such as the USA will require you to attend a face to face interview at the US embassy to assess your suitability.

One Way Travel Insurance

Those individuals intending on staying in a foreign country long-term will usually find that it makes sense for them to purchase one-way travel insurance. Their needs will differ from those of the average tourist, so it is important that the policy they choose reflect this. One-way travel insurance is also sometimes referred to as expat travel insurance. Down Under Insurance provides a policy that will work well for those people who intend to move abroad long-term.

Click below for your One Way Travel Insurance quote

What to Expect with One Way Travel Insurance

One-way travel insurance is named from the fact that those looking for this type of policy will typically be purchasing a one-way ticket to their destination. This individual may be moving abroad long term, or they may just be going on a long holiday abroad without any plans for when they will be returning. If this person were to buy a basic travel insurance policy, it would likely be unsuitable for their needs. This type of policy will cover such things as:

  • emergency medical assistance
  • emergency medical and hospital expenses
  • personal liability coverage
  • personal luggage coverage
  • luggage delay coverage
  • coverage in the case of death
  • repatriation if required in the event of an emergency
  • coverage for stolen money
  • cancellation, curtailment trip interruption

The fact that this is one-way coverage brings some important additional benefits such as:

  • i f you need to make a claim on this policy, you will be able to do this in your destination country rather than coming back to Australia to make a claim.

Do You Need One-Way Travel Insurance?

The one-way travel insurance policy will be suitable for a number of different types of individual, including:

  • Australians who are going abroad and have no real plans for when they will be returning home again
  • Australians who are returning home after a long period of being away
  • Australians who plan to go travelling for an indefinite time in Africa, the Americas, Asia, South East Asia, or Europe.

When it comes to purchasing travel insurance, it is always going to be important to find the policy that is most suitable for your needs.

Cheapest Way to Travel Across America

Flying coach is perhaps the cheapest option, but upgrades quickly add up. (Photo: Ryan McVay/Digital Vision/Getty Images )

Related Articles

When you’re ready to make the journey of more than 5,000 miles across the United States, you have more than one option to make the trek. Choices include flying, taking a train or bus, or driving your own car, but which one is the cheapest depends on how many people you travel with and how many stops you want to make. It also depends on where you want to start and end your trip. But for the sake of comparison, we’ll compare the costs of getting from New York City to Seattle, Washington.

Flying: Quick and Cheap

It might seem counterintuitive, but flying can be the cheapest option — especially if you’re only flying one way. As of November 2013, it can cost less than $200 to fly from New York or Newark, New Jersey, to Seattle. Flying is also the fastest way to get from point A to point B — but if your intent is to stop and see the sights along the way, this might not be the option for you. Also, flight costs can vary greatly depending on the time of year, baggage fees and where you’re starting from. If you’re not starting from an area near a major airport, expect to pay a lot more.

Bus: Cheap but Long

The second-cheapest option is to take the bus. Greyhound buses stop in nearly every major and midsize town in the United States — and many smaller ones too. As of November 2013, it costs you close to $300 to take a bus from New York City to Seattle. The ride takes nearly three days, meaning you have lots of time to see the scenery outside of your window. It also means you spend a lot of time in a cramped space, and you have to pack food to bring with you or buy meals whenever the bus stops. You can also arrange to stop off for a day or two in one of the cities where Greyhound stops and then take the next bus that comes — but that means you must book hotels or campgrounds, which costs you more money.

Train: Long and Sometimes Expensive

Renting a car can put a huge dent in your wallet, especially if you plan on holding onto the vehicle for more than a couple of days. If you’re organizing a lengthy holiday or need a car for a two-month-long business trip, forget about booking the first rental car you find. Take time to do some market research and then book your rental car knowing you got the best deal possible.

Visit Third-Party Travel Sites

Become a Loyal Customer

Some of the major car rental companies send out email promotions to customers who sign up for club membership, where new promotions are offered every month. If you sign up for membership, you might also be able to skip the lines and all the paperwork when renting a car.

Search for Coupons and Promo Codes

Search online for car rental coupons and promotion codes for discounts. Also look for coupons in car magazines and entertainment guides. It’s also worth visiting the social networking pages of the major car rental companies to see if they’re offering monthly promotions — post questions about two-month discounts while on these sites.

Use Your Frequent Flier Miles

If you’re earning air miles with an airline, you can apply those well-earned frequent flier points to booking a rental car for two months. Airlines offer their loyal customers air miles that can not only be redeemed for future flights, but for car rentals. You might not get the miles to pay for the entire reservation, but if you’ve racked up enough points, it will definitely make a big difference.

The Best Way to Find Cheap Flights

One of the best ways to find a cheap flight is to search online airfare websites. As Nielsen Online International President John Carlson states, “Travel is a category extremely suited to the Internet due to the latter’s ability to provide efficient access to an extremely wide range of comparable information.” (see Ref 1 page 5) Finding and booking a cheap flight online using an online services is a convenient and fast way to plan your trip.

Other People Are Reading

Search Hotwire to find cheap flights. Search an exact date you have in mind or uses the “Flexible Date Search” to find the lowest prices available around those dates. The results display the airline and a list of times available for your desired date. This service does not charge booking fees on top of the price of the flight. The quoted rate includes taxes and fees. If you’re not happy with the prices showing at this time, you can set up a “Trip Watcher” notification to receive an email when the prices go down.

Find low airfare using the Orbitz travel search website. This website maintains airfare information on most of the major airlines so that you can compare and find the lowest fare available on your date. Search one day before and after your dates or enter the number of days for a flexible search as a way to get a deal on your airfare cost. This service also does not charge booking fees for flights. Use the Deal Detector service to set your desired price and receive updates on available fares at that price point.

Use Priceline to find low airfare rates. In addition to the benefit of no booking fees, you also can earn airline miles with this service. The “Name Your Own Price” tool allows you to type in your trip information and enter a bid. If accepted, you can purchase the fare immediately. You can also click to the “Pricebreaker Deals” section to see a listing of last minute flight deals to get a low price on airfare.

The Best Way to Find a Cheap Airplane Ticket, According to

The Best Way to Find a Cheap Airplane Ticket, According to Two Guys Who Set Fares

Photograph by Justin Sullivan/Getty Images

Travelers often bemoan the gambling in airline ticket-shopping: Do I buy now or wait to see if the fare decreases? One reason for that casino feel is the computerized alchemy of what’s known as revenue management, the airlines’ 24/7 effort to improve their financial performance by meticulously allocating the number of seats at various price levels and overbooking flights.

It’s an algorithm-based field of math and computer science that is, literally, akin to rocket science. A typical day’s operation for the average global airline involves roughly 100 million fares to be analyzed and managed, says Bill Brunger, chief executive of PODS Research, a revenue management consultancy and a former vice president of Continental Airlines (UAL ). He and Scott Nason, a former vice president of revenue management at American Airlines, discussed the dark arts of airfare pricing on Tuesday at a conference hosted by Airlines for America, the U.S. carriers’ trade group in Washington. (Nason also runs a revenue-management consulting firm, SDN TT H Consulting, in Dallas.)

Advance-purchase rules help segment airline seat prices into different market categories, with a single flight often having 20 or more fares. That model—with purchase deadlines of one to 90 days—helps revenue managers deal with seat inventory that usually comes onto their books a year before the departure date. Fares that are booked 21 days early, for example, generally cost less than fares bought a week or less before travel. Airlines also overbook most flights. The amount of no-show passengers has been remarkably stable over the years, so carriers can predict which routes and days correspond to a high number of absentee fliers. It’s also financially lucrative—overbooking accounts for 2 percent to 4 percent of the industry’s entire revenue, Brunger said.

And if you think buying vacation flights nearly a year in advance will help you get the best ticket price, it won’t. “They don’t know too much” a year out, says Brunger. “When revenue management people are nervous they usually pick a default level that’s conservative.”

As the shopping season for Thanksgiving and Christmas travel approaches, here are a few ideas from the two airfare experts:

1. Book early-ish. Hardly an exact metric, Brunger concedes, but it means not waiting too long, hoping that an airline will have too many empty seats on the flight you want three to four weeks before departure and get desperate to sell them. (That’s exceedingly rare, and means something went wrong for the revenue manager.) The closer you get to the advance-purchase deadlines, the more clarity airlines usually have on their pricing forecasts. When it works as planned, revenue management means an airline has sold exactly the number of seats at each fare level that it had intended—closer to departure, the seats that are left cost far more.

2. Book at a price satisfactory to you. If you can live with the cost and it seems decent, take the plunge. “If the fare feels like a fairly good fare, I would buy,” Nason said.

3. Stop looking. You don’t need to keep shopping a flight you’ve purchased, see the price drop, and feel like a dope. (And airlines are much less likely to refund you the savings than they used to be.) Sure, there’s an argument to be made that such a painful education may help you become a better airfare shopper, but few people are obsessive or patient enough to keep tabs on routes’ pricing at all times. Said Brunger: “Buyer’s remorse is a real thing.”

7 New Travel Websites That Are Revolutionizing The Way We Book Trips

The Flexible Finder

[[nid:1507938]]

Admit it: You type full-sentence questions into Google because it always seems to find the right answers. But up until Adioso hit the Web, there wasn’t a travel search engine where you could make a natural-language inquiry and get an instant response. Now, you can type in questions like, “what’s the cheapest flight to Vegas this weekend,” or simply, “take me somewhere warm tomorrow,” and wait for results. This revolutionary tool lets flexible travelers type in random prompts to find the best deals anywhere in the world any time. It thinks like you think, which is a refreshing change from the box-ticking nightmare of finding a good deal within a broad area on other sites.

The Matchmaker

[[nid:1507940]]

Behold the rise of the (bed)sharing economy! Easynest made headlines in July with its novel approach to penny-pincher accommodation: sleeping with strangers. Essentially, the San Francisco startup links single travelers with solo “hosts” to share a double or twin hotel room in select cities. Pairs typically examine each other’s profiles and message back and forth before agreeing to a night in close quarters, and the solo traveler must pay the host for a portion of the room before turning up at the hotel.

The Travel Planner

[[nid:1507942]]

Launched just a few weeks ago, Trekkel claims to be the first travel recommendation engine and personal itinerary planner to meld the best of crowd-sourced ratings, curated content and friends’ comments into one space. The site experienced a few kinks in the system at the start, but it is now functional for travel planning in 15 North American cities, with a goal of expanding into Europe in the coming months. All you need to do is pick your destination, rate the elements of travel you find most important and wait for Trekkel to do the elbow work.

The Happy Hunter

[[nid:1507944]]

Are you happy with your experience in the sky? Researchers at Euromonitor International said in a recent report that this question is of increasing importance to travelers who seek higher “happiness scores” on sites like Routehappy when booking a trip. The new startup helps passengers choose a flight based as much on its quality as its price by informing them of the airline and route that will best suit their specific needs. Happy scores go up with smile-inducing features like larger seats, nicer planes and better entertainment options.

The Last-Minute Savior

[[nid:1507946]]

Travel may just be the most unpredictable of activities, and there’s nothing vacationers hate worse than a bit of fine print that doesn’t read their way. That’s where Roomer  sweeps in to save the day. This new website acts as the “stub-hub” of the hotel industry, allowing travelers who are unable to use their hotel room to list the pad at a discounted price, thus giving spontaneous vacationers a chance to snag a last-minute deal. The site offers sellers a safe and effective solution that reduces the cost of canceling a room, while providing savvy travelers with steep discounts at some amazing properties. It’s a win-win all around.

The Group Organizer

[[nid:1507948]]

Planning for a large group of people can be a nightmare no matter how you go about it, but the new website Flights With Friends hopes to make the process a touch less mind-boggling. Ideal for sporting events, family gatherings, student travel, conventions or weddings, groups can consolidate their “reply all” email chains, search more than 150 sites for airfares and hotels, graze the TripAdvisor reviews, chat, sort and vote on the best options before booking a trip with the Expedia Price Match Guarantee. For groups with different budgets and opinions, this is your go-to site to make order out of disorder.

The Hotel Time Machine

[[nid:1507950]]

Have you ever purchased a hotel room online and then found yourself playing the “what if” game? What if you purchased too soon? What if the price was about to go down? What if you had only waited one more week? Now, hotel search engine startup The Suitest has introduced a groundbreaking prediction feature that it’s calling a veritable “Hotel Time Machine.” Launched in August by a former quantitative finance analyst at Goldman Sachs, The Suitest uses the same event-modeling techniques that hedge funds use to determine whether a mortgage-backed security will default. The result is the type of complex price forecasting of hotels that travelers previously only found on airfare sites like Kayak or Bing Travel.

One Way Travel Insurance #travel #market

#one way travel insurance

One way travel insurance

In the vast majority of cases when looking for travel insurance, you will need cover for an outward-bound journey and an inward-bound one. In this case it’s easy to compare regular travel insurance deals online and find the level of cover you need at the cheapest price.

However, in some rare and exciting circumstances, travellers might just be looking for one way travel insurance as they are not heading back to the UK.

So what does this involve?

What is one-way travel insurance?

As it says on the tin, one way travel insurance covers you for just an outward-bound journey that you make from the UK.

This could be for reasons such as emigrating to live your life in another part of the world with a few stop-offs planned along the way. Alternatively, you may be returning to the country of your origin having spent years living in the UK. Or it might simply be that you plan to come back to the UK but you are not sure of your return date.

In any case, you will need to opt for one way travel insurance.

Can I get one way travel insurance?

Most standard travel insurance deals you will come across when shopping online, apply to traditional holidays or trips that will eventually land you back in the UK.

However most of these standard travel policies can also be taken as one way trip, so long as you contact the insurer and request it. It’s always a good idea to get this part of the agreement in writing and have a print out to take with you.

How does one way cover work?

But just like with single trip or annual policies, that will cover you out of the UK and back again, travel insurance for one way trips comes with a time limit by which you should have arrived at your final destination.

Typically maximum cover for one way trip insurance, will last no more than a week from the point of leaving the UK. Bear in mind that cover will cease at the end of this timeframe so it’s a good idea to build in some emergency room in case your travel is delayed or you change your plans.

If you take less time than the maximum stated on your policy, cover will automatically lapse 24 hours after arriving at your destination.

What’s the difference between one-way travel cover and annual policies?

One way trip insurance is different from annual (or ‘multi-trip’) travel insurance as this provides cover for individual trips for a period of 12 months – but only if they start from and return to the UK.

One way travel insurance is also different to backpacker (or ‘gap year’ policies) which cover you for one extended trip to different countries for up to 12 months. But again, ultimately you must be starting from and returning to the UK and be a UK resident.

Working your way round Australia #travel #air

    #work and travel australia

    Working your way round Australia

The gap year spent travelling around Australia is an increasingly popular rite of passage. Last year, the Australian government issued 113,936 working holiday visas, with nearly 30,000 of them going to British applicants. It’s a big adventure, but doesn’t have to be a complicated one. It’s simply a case of knowing where to look.

    The working holiday visa

The Working Holiday Visa allows holders to stay in Australia for up to a year, working for a maximum of six months with any one employer. During this 12-month period, holders may leave and enter the country as many times as they wish.

The visa must be applied for outside of Australia, and applicants must be between the ages of 18 and 30. Evidence of having sufficient funding for the trip is also required – a certified bank statement showing AU$5,000 ( 2,120) in your account and a return plane ticket. Applications can be made online at the Australian Immigration Department’s website. The visa costs AU$185 ( 80).

Note: Visa eligibility requirements, costs and entitlements are subject to change – check before applying.

    Getting there

The simplest way is getting a return flight, with the best value coming from the less prominent Asian airlines, such as China Eastern. Malaysia Airlines and Royal Brunei. Most airlines will include a free stop-off on the way, as it is inevitably two flights rather than one. Rock bottom prices start at around 550 return, although in practice expect to pay 700 to 900.

Round-the-world tickets are also worth considering – they work out slightly more expensive, but include a series of stop-offs. Expect to pay between 900 and 1,300 with specialists such as STA Travel and Roundtheworldflights.com.

One thing to bear in mind is the destination city. Many fly into Sydney, blow most of their money there and end up staying for most of the year. It’s worth considering flights into Darwin, Cairns or, particularly, Perth. The latter tends to be slightly cheaper. Another potentially cheaper option is getting a return to Thailand or Singapore then using a budget carrier such as Tiger Airways to get to Perth or Darwin.

The more adventurous can go the long way, over land and sea from London to Sydney. Oz Bus runs a mammoth 12-week tour through 20 countries for 3,750.

    Getting around

Most Australians fly between the major cities, which is unsurprising given the vast distances – it’s roughly as far from Darwin to Sydney as it is from Oslo to Istanbul. The main airlines are Qantas (plus its budget subsidiary, Jetstar ) and Virgin Blue. The same theories apply to these as to European budget airlines – flights are cheaper booked in advance and at unpopular hours of the day.

However, flying from place to place somewhat defeats the object – much of the country’s character is unveiled in the long journeys through country towns and pure nothingness.

In terms of freedom to explore, buying or renting a car or van is the best option. The cheapest cars can be found advertised by fellow travellers on hostel notice boards, although the safer bets are sold and hired by specialist companies such as Travellers Autobarn and Wicked Campers. Prices range from AU$1,000 to AU$10,000, depending on vehicle type, age and roadworthiness.

The other option is the bus. The Greyhound network covers most of the country, and sells passes based on either route or distance. It’s the cheapest way to get from A to B to Z, but it can be a pretty unexciting way to travel. Then there are tour companies such as Oz Experience. Adventure Tours and Wayward Bus. Geared to the backpacker, these prove more expensive, but can be more fun and informative.

    Package deals

Many of the more popular destinations and activities are bundled together in package deals by specialist backpacker travel agents. These include Backpackers World. Adventure Travel Bugs. Wanderers Travel and Peter Pans. Generally these deals will represent a considerable saving on buying the components (usually a Whitsundays sailing trip, Fraser Island 4WD safari and numerous free nights’ accommodation in hostels) individually. However, there are usually extra costs involved – insurance, park entrance fees etc – and there is often very good reason for a bargain basement price. The included hostels can sometimes be miles out of town, while the baseline Whitsundays yachts tend to be very crowded, with poor catering and facilities. It pays to investigate exactly what is provided for the price.

    Accommodation

Australia has the most geared-up, extensive hostel network in the world. Some are still very basic, but the sheer level of competition means most have had to buck up their game. This has led to many resort-style one stop shops (particularly in the north), and more upmarket flashpacker hostels, such as those in the Base chain. Bigger doesn’t necessarily mean better, though – many of the larger complexes are utterly lacking in charm. Word of mouth is the most reliable indicator, especially in the smaller towns.

Very few people continue to stay in a hostel if staying in a city (usually Sydney, Melbourne or Perth) to work for a while. Estate agents usually insist on six-month contracts at the very least, and properties usually come unfurnished. As a result, many backpackers end up in (not entirely above board) shared flats, the new person handing their bond money to the person leaving. These are particularly prevalent in Pyrmont, Sydney and St Kilda, Melbourne, and are generally found through word of mouth and notice boards. Expect to pay between $100 and $250 a week in rent, depending on the quality of accommodation.

Backpacker magazines such as British Balls! and TNT are also good sources of longer-term accommodation.

    Work

If blessed with specialised skills and qualifications, finding work is a doddle. Tradespeople and nurses are always in demand, while gold can be struck in IT and accounting. Otherwise, the work on offer is generally poorly paid and not particularly glamorous – welcome to call centres, fruit farms and bars. Again, the backpacker magazines have good job listings and contacts, while agencies such as Work And Travel. Freespirit and Geoffrey Nathan specialise in placing backpackers. It’s not worth bothering with the more mainstream agencies – unless you meet their requirements, they generally couldn’t care less.

Many jobs – especially in bars and restaurants – aren’t advertised. A bit of legwork, nipping in and dropping off a CV can pay dividends. There may not be any vacancies at the time, but when there are, your name is down.

If struggling to find work, it’s worth moving to another city. In November and December, for example, Sydney is crammed with backpackers, all looking for temporary work.

    Money

The cost of living in Australia is slightly cheaper than it is in the UK, but not by much. The days of three dollars to the pound are long gone – expect an exchange rate of around 2.4.

It is possible to get off the plane with hardly anything in the bank and walk into a job within a few days, but unlikely. The Australian government figure of AU$5,000 is a little over-cautious, but it’s worth having enough to live on for at least six weeks. How much you need depends on spending habits and (largely) alcohol consumption.

Pay rates are very ordinary – expect AU$13-$17 per hour in bars and restaurants, $20-$30 an hour for accounting work, for example.

The base tax rate for non-residents is 29%. In some circumstances, it is possible to get a partial refund at the end of the financial year. Try companies such as Taxback.com to check eligibility. Be warned, however, that non-residents without a tax file number are taxed at 46.5% – get one as soon after arrival as possible.

    Tried-and-tested destinations

By far the most common route is up the East Coast from Sydney to Cairns. Chilling out in Byron Bay. driving and camping on Fraser Island and sailing around the Whitsunday Islands on the Great Barrier Reef are practically obligatory activities. Most will visit Melbourne and Darwin too. For tours, the big four tend to be Cape Tribulation in Far North Queensland, The Great Ocean Road in Victoria, the Red Centre and Kakadu National Park.

    Other destinations

The West Coast is becoming an increasingly popular (and far less crowded) alternative. It even has its own reef – the Ningaloo. For somewhere completely out of the way, there is Kimberley in the north-west, while up-and-coming spots on the East Coast include Coffs Harbour. the Town of 1770 and Mission Beach.

    Staying longer

Other options for staying include sponsorship. for which applicants must have an Australian company willing to back their application, and permanent residency for those with skills in high demand. The Immigration Department website has the details and eligibility requirements, which are frequently subject to change.

The Best Way to Book International Flights

Several options exist to aid you in booking international flights. (Photo: Ryan McVay/Photodisc/Getty Images )

    Related Articles

Before you travel internationally, one of the first items you must obtain is your flight ticket. Options for purchasing international flights are abundant, which can make knowing whether or not you’re getting the best deal confusing. The best way to book an international flight depends on your personal circumstances, including how flexible your travel dates are and whether you have a strong preference for — or against — a specific airline.

    Step 1

Visit a specific airline’s website and search for fares if you must fly that airline, be it for frequent flier mileage accrual, personal preference or other reasons. Book an international ticket using frequent flier mileage directly from the airline as well.

    Step 2

Search an airfare aggregator — Kayak, FareCompare and Skyscanner are three options — to peruse international ticket prices and flight schedules for all airlines that fly a particular route on a particular date if you’re not tied to a single airline. Set date ranges — one month, for example — rather than specific dates, to view the best available fares over long periods of time.

Consult a travel agent if your travel is extremely complicated — for example, if you’re visiting several continents in random order — or if you want to book accommodations, rental cars and other add-ons alongside your vacation. Although travel agents have lost market share in recent years thanks to the rise of self-serve travel websites, their expertise and one-on-one attention is helpful if your travel needs are complex.

Book an international flight through a student travel agency such as StudentUniverse or STA Travel if you’re a college student, under 26 or a university faculty member. Airlines offer discounted airfare to youth, students and professional academics and provide the fares to agencies like these so students can access them. Visit either agency’s website to complete a search for your dates and destinations.

The cheapest way from London to Paris #travel #to #italy

    #travel to paris
    #

What Is the Cheapest Way to Travel to Europe? #tasmania #travel

    #cheapest way to travel
    #
