    Specialist Diploma in Web Development Technology

    With Singapore’s Intelligent Nation 2015 (iN2015) vision and the Next Generation Nationwide Broadband Network (Next Gen NBN), web technology knowledge and skills will continue to be one of the keenly sought after in software development. According to IMDA’s annual survey on infocomm manpower for 2010, software design and development was the fourth largest infocomm job categories and top five highest number of infocomm manpower vacancies. In response to IMDA’s Infocomm Manpower Surveys, the School of Digital Media and Infocomm Technology (DMIT) launched the Specialist Diploma in Web Development Technology (SWEB) course in 2003.

    Over the last few years, many Small Medium Enterprises (SME) and MNCs have converted their software applications to the web platform to leverage on the connectivity and open standard of the Internet. IMDA Infocomm Manpower Surveys in 2010 also consistently rate Web/Internet Design and Development as one of the top 5 important skills in ICT industry.

    The SWEB course is an online one-year part-time course delivered over the Internet and supported by scheduled on-site tutorials. Discussion forum is available for interaction amongst lecturers and participants. Assessment includes projects/ assignments with face-to-face interviews/presentations and on-site tests. The targeted participants are Diploma/Degree holders who wish to learn new skills in web development.

    Graduates of the SWEB course will gain competency in developing web applications on the Internet. They may be involved in the areas of web design, web development and website administration.

    Students are expected to have access to computer and internet during your study at SP eg. e-learning, writing report, etc.

    This course aims to provide focused training to equip students with new technologies of web development. It focuses on three areas: web design, web programming and web application development.

    This course also provides an opportunity for students to take the Proxor Software Developer Exam to receive a Proxor Rating. Proxor is a Carnegie Mellon University Spinoff company, specializing in the development of certification examinations that accurately measures the test-takers’ ability to program realistic problems in a professional programming environment.

    The modules covered in this course include: Fundamentals of Web Development Technology, Web System Development Techniques, Java Programming, Java Server Programming, Web Programming and Database Management Systems.

    Students will also have exclusive access to online e-learning training materials from Oracle Academy on Java Fundamentals.

    This course is suitable for working adults who wish to deepen their information technology knowledge in the area of web application design and development.

    Minimum Entry Requirements

    Applicants should have a Polytechnic Diploma/Degree in Information Technology. Polytechnic diploma or degree holders from other disciplines must show their competence in programming skills through relevant certifications or modules taken.

    Applicants without programming experience may be required to take entrance test.

    Recognition of Prior Learning

    Applicants who do not meet the entry requirements may be considered for admission to the course based on evidence of at least 5 years of relevant working experience or supporting evidence of competency readiness. Suitable applicants who are shortlisted will have to go through an interview and/or entrance test. The Polytechnic reserves the right to shortlist and admit applicants.

    The Specialist Diploma in Web Development Technology course consists of two post-diploma certificates (PDCs). Each PDC comprises three modules and the details are as follows:

    Data safety is ensured through 128-bit Blowfish encryption standards. Further security is provided at the customer level via personal encryption keys. Data transmission uses standard Secure Socket Layer (SSL) technology .

    Reseller Hosting: Installing WHMCS on Your Own Server

    Now that we ve seen how to prepare our PHP configuration to receive WHMCS, it s time to set it up on our own server. To do this, visit the WHMCS website and choose the package you want to purchase. There are two different models here. You can choose to pay a one-time fee or a monthly subscription amount. Obviously the latter is several times more expensive than the former up front. But if you already have experience with WHMCS and you know what you re getting into, it might make more sense to go with the latter. The simple $16 a month plan as shown below is the cheapest way to get started.

    WHM also has a number of add-ons that can be quite useful. Take the mobile facilities for example. You can go for the Android or the iPhone apps as well as select a number of interesting functionalities such as project management.

    Once you ve made your selections, it s time to fill in your details so that you can create an account with WHMCS. Most of these fields are necessary. But the biggest hurdle might be in ensuring that you re not classified as a high risk account. There are a few steps you can take to minimize this risk. For example, try and use an email ID attached to your own domain name – like the one on which you re going to install WHMCS. Due to the calculation of risk variables, email addresses emanating from free accounts are always placed on a higher risk footing than others. You might also want to ensure that your IP address doesn t come from suspicious sources – specifically, some countries which are known for their spam.

    Finally, you can make your payment in a variety of ways. For me, PayPal is the simplest and that option is chosen by default anyway. Once you agree to the terms of service, you ll be taken to the payment gateway provided WHMCS doesn t think that you re too much of a risk.

    Once your account has been confirmed, it s a simple matter to go to their download page and grab the latest version.

    Preparing WHMCS

    The WHMCS download takes the form of a zip file. If you open it up, you ll see that it contains the primary folder as well as a couple of text documents. While you may want to read both of these at your leisure, they re not necessary for the actual installation and if you unzip the zip file directly into your roots destination, both of these will be copied into the root as well which is probably not what you want. So you can open it up in an archival program and delete only those two while keeping the rest of the zip file intact.

    Upload the zip file to the directory in which you wish to install WHMCS. I simply choose the root directory here since there is already a subfolder inside. But if you wish to place your installation more than one level deep, you can create a separate folder. Once that s done, you can use the right-click facility in the cPanel file manager to simply extract the zip file in place.

    The next step is to prepare the configuration for WHMCS. By default, it requires a file known as configuration.php . WHMCS already includes a file called configuration.php.new in its root folder. Before we are able to proceed with the installation, we need to rename this by removing the .new suffix. Once again, we can do this easily with the cPanel file Explorer by locating the file in the tree, right clicking, and hitting Rename .

    Creating the Databases

    WHMCS requires one freshly created empty database with the details of a user with administrator privileges. We can easily do this in a few seconds using cPanel database tools. I d already written earlier about how to do this quickly and easily .

    Once you follow the instructions in the linked tutorial, make a note of the following pieces of information:

    1. The database name;
    2. The username;
    3. The password.

    While you don t have to provide these details when starting the installation, they will be required during the installation process, so it s better to have them ready when the time comes.

    Installing WHMCS

    We can finally begin the installation of WHMCS by opening a new tab in our browser and executing the following file:

    As you can see in the screenshot below, install.php is located in the install folder just one level above the WHMCS directory. As soon as your browser loads the page, you are presented with the EULA as shown here.

    After agreeing to the terms of service, WHMCS will proceed with the necessary system checks to ensure that the rest of the process goes smoothly. Every check needs to be followed by a Passed message in green as shown here:

    Note that there is a check called Configuration File which refers to the renaming of the default configuration file for WHMCS that we did earlier. Without that, this check would have failed and we wouldn t have been able to proceed.

    If everything goes as planned and your checks succeed, WHMCS will now ask you to fill in the details of the database that we created earlier. You can see below, that I ve filled in the information of the fresh database.

    Note that this is also the place where you enter your WHMCS license key. You would have received this as part of your account creation process. Without this, you may be able to download the WHMCS files and initiate the installation, but you won t be able to complete it.

    Once again if all goes as planned, you will now be taken to the setup screen for the administrator account. This will be the primary account responsible for configuring WHMCS, creating new users, roles, staff members etc. So take care when filling in this info.

    After entering details of the administrator account, the installation process is finally complete. But we can t begin using our new package just yet.

    We first need to delete the entire install folder one level above the WHMCS directory. Without this, you won t be allowed to even login for the first time. So as before, locate it via the cPanel Explorer and simply hit Delete .

    The next couple of steps are optional, but recommended. I ll talk about the one called Secure the Writable Directories a bit later, but setting up the Cron job as suggested in point 3 is really quite simple. Simply navigate to your cPanel dashboard and select Cron jobs . On the next page, under Add a New Cron Job , select the Once per Day option under the Common Settings drop-down box. Copy and paste the Cron job command from the WHMCS installation completed page and paste it into the Command section of the cPanel Cron job creation page. Click Add New Cron Job , and you re done!

    And that s how we complete the installation of WHMCS. The install process itself isn t complicated at all. You just need to make sure that all the preparations are already in place before you start. Right from having the correct PHP configuration as we saw in the previous article, and preparing the databases and configuration files in advance. Once that s taken care of, you can be up and running with a fresh WHMCS installation in just a few seconds.

    What Are Online Based or Distance Education classes?

    Online-based courses, also called Distance Education classes, may take two different forms:

    Online classes are taken exclusively over the Internet. Please note that, while some online courses provide all instructional content over the Internet, others may require some on-campus meetings. Please see the course schedule or WebAdvisor for more information.

    Hybrid classes meet both on campus and online. Think of them as a combination or blending of online classes and face-to-face classes.
