Where to get cheapest airline tickets

Sally | Edited by Steve N

Updated November 2017

Where to get cheapest airline ticketsLeave it until the last minute and flight costs are often sky-high but plan ahead and book the right way and the savings can soar. Whether you’ve the flexibility to travel anywhere, anytime, or are looking for set places and dates, we’ve 27 tips to cut the cost of jet-setting.

Not all comparison sites are the same, so this guide takes you through the different types. Plus we’ve clever tricks to cut the cost of school holiday travel, uncover how many cheap seats are left, grab credit card freebie flights and more.

Affected by the Monarch collapse? Monarch Airlines went into administration on 2 Oct 2017, with an estimated 860,000 customers affected. If you’re one of them and you’re looking for help getting home, demanding a refund or making a travel insurance claim, see our Monarch Airlines help guide.

27 cheap flight tips, including.

Use the top comparison sites to slash costs if you know your exact dates and destination

If you know when and where you want to go, then don’t go direct to an airline; use a price comparison site to get lots of data in a very short time. However.

Different comparison sites search different firms, so check at least two.

Top pick comparison sites

All allow you to search by flight class and include travel brokers, charter airlines and budget airlines.

Where to get cheapest airline tickets

Kayak* for a comparison incl baggage and payment fees. We argue within MSE Towers about the very top pick, but Kayak is Martin’s favourite, so it wins. Not only that, but it also allows you to filter options based on credit/debit card fees and whether or not you want to check in bags so you can compare costs more accurately.

Where to get cheapest airline tickets

Skyscanner* for the very cheapest time to fly. Another MSE Towers favourite, Skyscanner gives you fare options spread over a month to find exactly when’s cheapest. It has particularly strong coverage of budget flights, searching over 1,200 airlines and travel sites in total.

Where to get cheapest airline tickets

Momondo* for its flight data info. We like Momondo for its nifty tool that tells you the cheapest and most expensive dates around your flight, as well as helpful insights such as the cheapest airport to fly from/into. It doesn’t do it for all destinations, but it has the biggies – New York, Dubai, Sydney, Cape Town.

It’s also worth checking Google – it can be a useful starting point before going to some of the others – plus try Cheapflights, Fly.com, Dohop. If you want a hotel too, Expedia* can be a good option. Discuss which ones you prefer in the forum.

Flight brokers can give big discounts if you’re booking a hotel as well

Where to get cheapest airline ticketsFlight brokers are essentially online travel agents. They allow you to book flights, hotels and car hire, often giving extra discounts if you combine them. Plus, you get extra protection for combination bookings.

While this can be a big boon, sometimes you’ll find it’s cheaper to book separately use the comparison sites above for flights, and get the best price for accommodation using our Cheap Hotels guide. But, you need to balance the gain of the protection against the extra cost.

What protection do I get?

If you make flight and accommodation bookings with the same company within the same day, you get ATOL protection even though it’s not a formal package deal. This means that if your travel operator goes bust, your money is protected, and if you’re already away, it’ll get you home. You can read more about ATOL in our Holiday Rights guide.

When is the best time to book?

When looking for cheap flight tickets, timing is absolutely crucial.

Unlike package holidays, flights should generally be booked early. Business folk will pay top dollar at the last minute, so prices soar.

Unless you prefer sticking with the same airline and you’re holding out for a sale you know is coming up, it’s usually best to book as early as you can.

The latest research from the comparison site Momondo* found it’s generally best to book 56 days ahead (last time it did the research it was 53) and that booking then is on average 28% cheaper than booking on the day of departure. The last cheap booking date varies by destination, though, so you can use Momondo’s ‘Flight Insight’ tab on many routes to see the data for it (see Flight Insight for info).

However Momondo’s figures are based on the prices quoted in flight searches, and that factors in sales too, so take its ‘perfect day to book’ info with a big pinch of salt, and if in doubt book early.

Momondo also found that Tuesdays and evenings (after 6pm) are generally the cheapest time to fly, while Saturdays are the most expensive. If you can be flexible, it’s worth checking prices on different days and at different times to see if you can cut the cost further.

Beat the school holiday price hikes with the Easyjet ‘book the wrong date’ trick

We’ve found a clever way to bag cheaper flights using Easyjet’s ‘Flexifares’, which let you switch dates by a few weeks without paying extra. It works the whole year round, but it’s particularly useful when prices shoot up during the school holidays. It’s just one of several tips we’ve got to flying with Easyjet – see Easyjet Flight Tricks for more.

Where to get cheapest airline tickets

The idea is to book a Flexifare on the same route at a less busy time when flights are cheaper. Then after 24 hours, provided there’s capacity, you can switch it to the dates you originally wanted at no extra charge. It’s not the easiest trick in the book, but if it works it could save you Ј100s.

We had to go away in the last week of May prices were through the roof because it was half term. Flights for the family, travelling at the weekend with luggage, cost Ј836 all-in. But booking flexi-flights two weeks earlier cost just Ј405. After a nervous 24-hour wait we switched them to the weekend we wanted Ј431 saved!

Forumite Green1960 saved Ј700 on flights to Lanzarote in the school hols:

When we went on the Easyjet website, the flights were over Ј1,500 including bags. We then booked the flexi-flights, which were Ј848 a saving of Ј700. A bit nerve-wracking for the 24 hours, but we know it works. There must be availability obviously on the dates you are changing to.

How to do it: full step-by-step help

It’s not guaranteed, but follow our steps to see if it works for you.

Step 1: Check at least 20 seats are available on the date you want to fly. This trick is a bit of a gamble because you have to wait before switching your flights, there’s always a risk the seats you want could be snapped up in the meantime and that you could be left with a ticket for the wrong dates.

Our suggestion then is that you pretend to book standard tickets for a large party on the dates you actually want to fly (but don’t actually go through with the purchase). If you can still get a quote for, say, 20 seats, chances are there’ll still be room once you switch flights. The fewer seats left, the more of a gamble you’re taking.

Step 2: Book a cheaper Flexifare on an alternate date. Find and book a Flexifare ticket on the same route, no more than one week before or three weeks after you want to fly. As a bonus, these tickets also include speedy boarding and one piece of hold luggage but they aren’t available on every route, so check your destination’s included.

Step 3: Watch and wait. This is the nerve-wracking bit. You’ll need to wait at least 24 hours until you switch your Flexifare tickets to the dates you want. You’ll be able to move each ticket by up to one week before or three weeks after, if there’s space on a flight. You can change the dates as many times as you like but if there’s no availability, you won’t be able to switch.

Step 4: Switch your flights as soon as you can. As soon as the 24 hours are up, log on to the Easyjet website, check the dates you’re after are still available and switch your flights.

SOME USEFUL TIPS TO GET CHEAPEST AIRLINE TICKETS?

Tip #1: Make your airline tickets reservation early.

Many dirt cheap airline tickets require that you make a reservation 7, 14 or 21 days in advance, depending on the airline tickets. The best international airline tickets often require a reservation 30 days in advance. Making an airline tickets reservation as soon as you know your travel dates increases your chances of finding a cheap airline ticket.

Tip #2: Traveling on a weekday usually cheaper.

Flights departing on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday usually offer the lowest airline tickets. Cheap airline tickets are sometimes (but not always) higher on Monday and Friday than on other weekdays. Saturday flights occasionally have discount airline tickets, but as a rule it s more expensive to fly on a weekend than a weekday.

Tip #3: Stay over a Saturday night

Most dirt cheap airline tickets require that you stay over at least one Saturday night before your return flight. However, some airline tickets may only require you to stay a minimum of 3 or 4 days.

Tip #4: Again, make your flight reservation early!

Most of airlines sell only a limited number of airline tickets at the cheapest prices. When those airline tickets sell out, the price goes up!

Tip #5: Consider nearby airports.

You may enjoy better savings if you are willing to fly into nearby airports. For example, when flying to Los Angeles (LAX), you may want to consider flying into the Burbank (BUR), Orange County (SNA) or Ontario (ONT) airports. Similarly, the cost of an airline ticket to San Francisco (SFO) might be reduced by flying into San Jose (SJC) or Oakland (OAK), while travel to Miami (MIA) may be less expensive if you fly into Ft. Lauderdale (FLL).

Tip #6: Try an earlier or later flight date. To get the lowest roundtrip airline ticket, the same airline tickets must be available on both the departing and return flights you select. If the fare is sold out on either of these, the price you end up with will be much higher. If possible, consider flying on another date.

Tip #7: Book your trip with Express Airline Tickets .com!

Not just a website we work for you 24/7! Express Airline Tickets .com offers multiple ways to search for travel, especially customized for your needs.

The Top 5 Secrets to Scoring Cheap Flights

If you like to travel and like to save money, this is the column for you.

I’m about to explain some of the elements involved in the complicated business of airfare pricing. It may sound dull, but it’s not; if anything, it’s kind of weird how the whole system works, but that’s the way it is.

And the more you know about this system, the easier it is for you to find cheap flights every time you shop.

Where to find cheap airline ticketsPlay

Seems only fair. After all, the airlines go to extraordinary lengths to get you to pay more; they know all about your shopping habits, including when you want to travel and even where you want to go, and they price their fares accordingly.

So let’s level the playing field a bit, okay?

For more air travel news and insights visit Rick’s blog at: http://farecompare.com

Here are the five things you should know to score cheap flights:

    1. Very few seats are ever on sale — so speed is of the essence.

Did you know that on most planes, passengers pay ten different prices for their tickets? It’s true, and of course that means there are very few of the cheapest seats ever available –including those advertised in the airline’s advertised airfare sales.

Which means you have to grab the good deals the moment they are available. This is getting harder and harder, because everyone is an amateur travel agent these days, meaning you have tons of competition for those cheapest seats.

    The Best Airfare Deals

And speaking of jumping, that brings us to…

    2. Know the airline hurdles you have to clear.

To get the best of the ten different airfares on a plane, you have to follow the rules — or “hurdles,” as I call them — and the more hurdles you clear, the cheaper the fare.

One hurdle may be a Saturday night stay, which isn’t much of a problem for most vacationers (or leisure travelers), but most road warriors don’t like being away from home on the weekends, which is why they pay more for business travel.

Another hurdle is the 14-day advance purchase window; if you just have to get away right this minute, chances are you will pay for your impatience with higher fares. Note that some of the low-cost carriers such as JetBlue and AirTran usually make it a little easier, with only a seven-day advance-purchase requirement.

Yet another hurdle: the dreaded blackout dates. Most sales have them, and it usually means you can’t fly when you really want to, such as the dates surrounding holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas. If you want to save, you work around these dates (or fly around them).

    Best Days to Buy Airfare

    3. One day stands alone as the best day to shop.

If you’ve been reading my column for any length of time, you probably already know the answer to this, but if not, I won’t keep you dangling: the best day to shop for airfare is Tuesday. And let me get even more specific: shop on Tuesday at about 3 p.m.

Here’s why: usually, when an airline wants to launch a sale, it will do so late Monday. When the other airlines see this, they immediately go into competitive mode, and begin lowering their own prices to match the first one’s sale.

All the airlines that plan to join in on this “matching” will have completed the process by early Tuesday afternoon, so by 3 p.m., shoppers will have the most “good prices” to choose from.

Note: usually that original sale ends in just two or three days, and the matching fares of the other airlines will disappear by then as well, if not sooner. Remember, if all those sale prices disappear in a single day, that’s it, they are gone. The airline is not going to put up a fresh supply of cheap seats to meet the demand. It just doesn’t work that way.

    4. Certain days (and times) are cheaper to fly than others.

Look, the airlines know they can easily sell out all the seats on planes that go to popular destinations during the most popular days of the week to travel, so they’re not going to drop prices on those seats, are they? No, they are not.

But they would like to fill up the seats on the less popular days. Otherwise those seats are a total loss for them. Which is why you will find the best deals are available for flights on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Now, when it comes to the days everyone wants to fly — Fridays and Sundays — it figures that those are almost always the most expensive days to fly. Adjust your vacation schedule accordingly.

    Best Days to Fly

The best time of day to fly? Well, since no one wants to get up at the crack of dawn — you guessed it — that’s when to fly. And generally, the dinner hour is cheaper too. And always, the overnight flights.

    5. Today’s airfare shoppers need help to find the best deals.

This is one of the weird things about the airfare pricing system: sometimes, even if you follow all the rules, and clear all those hurdles, the airlines still might not give you the best price. Their thinking will run something like: “Maybe if we give this seat just another day or two out there in the marketplace, someone who wants it even more than you do will be willing to pay our current price. Let’s see if that happens.”

So, you could sit there chained to your computer, checking the prices minute by minute, waiting for a price drop — or you could sign up for an airfare alert. But be sure these are “real time” airfare alerts that let you know the instant prices change. The sooner you know about a deal, the better chance you have of actually snagging it.

Forget Aesop; his tortoise wouldn’t have a prayer of snagging a deal in today’s complicated game of airfare pricing. It’s you hares out there who will score — if you keep these tips in mind.

This work is the opinion of the columnist and does not reflect the opinion of ABC News.

10 Ways to Get Free (or Almost Free) Airline Tickets, where

10 Ways to Get Free (or Almost Free) Airline Tickets

Where to get cheap airline tickets

I love to travel. It sounds cliche, but it’s true. At one point, I had been out of the country every summer for six years, including a six-month stay in Europe that included the ubiquitous backpack. (See also: The Cheapest Way to Fly to Europe)

Now that I have a family, traveling is a lot more expensive, and airfare is a huge chunk of that. I haven’t given up on future trips, though, because there are so many ways to get free tickets these days. Below are some of the ideas that have worked for me or for people I know.

    1. Volunteer to Get Bumped

If you’ve flown at all, you probably know this drill. A flight gets overbooked, and so the gate agent asks for people to give up their seats in exchange for some sort of incentive. Often, that incentive is a voucher for a free or discounted ticket in the future. When you volunteer, they will usually book you through on another flight, so you still have a guaranteed way to get wherever you’re going.

    2. Rack Up the Miles

Join an airline frequent flyer program, and begin collecting miles towards a free ticket. It really is as easy as that. And most airlines are fairly good about helping you redeem your miles, as long as you follow their rules and plan your travel well in advance. You can maximize miles earned by choosing the longest route when you do fly, and you can often earn additional miles by making purchases through the rewards program website, etc. (See also: 5 Best Sign-up Bonuses for Airline Miles Credit Cards)

    3. Complain (Politely!)

Did something go wrong on your last flight? If you write a polite letter to the airline, you will often receive some sort of compensation in return. This is sometimes even a voucher for a free flight! Even if you don’t get that big payoff, you will often receive a discount on future tickets or some sort of free upgrade for your trouble. Most airlines respond positively to polite complaints. If something went wrong and you can document time, place, flight number, and personnel involved, you are likely to get something in exchange for your trouble.

    4. Look for Incentives

These days, free airline tickets are offered as incentives for everything from opening a brokerage account with a certain minimum amount of money to taking out a mortgage. While you don’t want to do these things just for the tickets, if you’re going to do them anyway, you may as well get the free travel. If you’re looking to make some sort of large investment, see if there’s a way to do it that involves free tickets.

    5. Redeem Those Credit Card Rewards

Credit cards have gotten a bad rap when it comes to actually letting you use your points to get free airline tickets. However, some of them actually do have quality programs. If you’re looking for free tickets and will be using a credit card anyway, you might as well earn points towards your next trip. If you tend to fly one airline most of the time, you can also get a credit card that is strictly for that airline. Airlines that have their own credit cards include American Airlines, Delta, and United. (See also: The Best Travel Reward Credit Cards)

Where to get cheap airline tickets

    6. Get a Job at the Airline

Airline employees often get discounted flights or get to fly standby for free. If you do a lot of flying, or would like to, and are open to a new or a second job, there’s no reason not to try and get hired by an airline. As a bonus, many airlines also offer free standby tickets for immediate family members, so you can all fly for free together.

    7. Ask for Tickets as a Gift

Ok, so this one may sound like cheating because someone is still paying for the tickets, but the key is that YOU are not paying for them. If there’s a trip you’d particularly like to take and you’re the plan-ahead type, go ahead and see if you can’t get the tickets for Christmas. Maybe all of your friends or relatives could go in together. Even if they can’t come up with the full price of the tickets you want, asking for contributions can lower your personal investment significantly.

    8. Ask for Miles Rather Than Money

If you know someone who racks up the frequent flyer miles, see if they’d be willing to transfer some to you so that you can get a free ticket. This is particularly useful if the person giving the miles has more than they will ever use, knows that their miles will expire before they use them, or wants to give you a significant gift but really doesn’t have the money. Try focusing your efforts on friends or relatives who travel quite frequently for work.

    9. Win a Sweepstakes

There are many contests and sweepstakes out there that offer free airline tickets to winners. Sure, your chances of winning any single contest are low, but if you enter them systematically and frequently, your chances of winning eventually go up. While you can’t plan your life around winning a sweepstakes, the tickets would be a nice surprise whenever your name comes up.

    10.Watch for Airline Mistakes

A couple months ago, United Airlines made a mistake and offered a bunch of tickets for very cheap or free. While the mistake was only live for a couple of minutes, many people took advantage of it. If you frequent travel forums, though, you can catch these deals because people will post about them almost as soon as they happen. Sometimes, airlines will try to rescind the tickets sold during these mistakes, but most often they are honored. If you want free tickets, this is a great way to find them.

    Bonus Standby Tip

Standby is no longer free, unless you or an immediate family member works for the airline. Flying standby used to be a great way to get free and/or deeply discounted airline tickets. However, most airlines now require you to have already purchased a ticket to even be eligible for standby flights, and many will charge you an additional fee, too. Each airline has a different policy, so check this out before you try to fly on a standby basis.

    Good luck, and good flying!

What s the biggest thing stopping you from getting to Japan? Money. This rings especially true to the younger readers out there, where a budget may be nonexistent.

Cheap ticket prices aren t what they used to be (I remember round trip tickets from the U.S. for around $600-700 in 2005). I would love to be able to give away free trips to Japan to every single person who enters this site (who knows, maybe one day there will be a contest with this as a first prize).  But I figure the next best thing I can do is help you find the cheapest way to get to Japan.

So when you re heading to Japan from your home country, what website do you use to get the cheapest airfare?

5 sweet international destinations where strong dollars mean cheaper vacations

A swanky room overlooking a sunny piazza in Rome costs a lot less this year. So does sipping espresso, nibbling on croissants, and dinning on steak frites in Parisian cafes.

Favorable currency exchange rates are making overseas travel far more affordable for Americans. Depending on the country, hotels, restaurants and shopping may be anywhere from 15% to 50% cheaper now than this time last year.

You can thank sputtering overseas economies for the more tourist-friendly prices. In the ever-changing currency markets, the U.S. dollar is once again in demand.

Of course, it s welcome news for anyone who is planning an overseas trip. Some people who ve been unable to afford international travel may finally be able take that dream vacation.

It definitely has an impact, and yes, it does encourage people who are on the fence, said Andi McClure-Mysza, co-president of Montrose Travel, a travel agency in Montrose, Calif. near Los Angeles, that books more than $280 million in travel annually.

Customers routinely bring up exchange rates in planning their trips and deciding where to go, she said. Getting a $5,000 vacation for $4,000, when taking into account potential savings, can be a powerful lure. Currency rates don t affect airline ticket prices, which happen to be relatively high at the moment. But they can mean savings on what visitors spend their money on after arriving.

Keep in mind that package tours don t necessarily take fluctuations in currencies into account. It depends on the operator and the contracts it cuts with hotel, restaurants and ground transportation suppliers.

Through the first 10 months of 2014, U.S. citizens made 57 million international trips, or 9.6% more than during the same period a year earlier. A buzzing U.S. economy and those exchange rates means more growth is likely in 2015.

Here are a few destinations where exchange rates will make your dollars stretch a lot further.

When Where To Go in 2015?

2015 is upon us, so now s the time to start thinking about planning your next holiday! Exciting times ahead, but the hard part is deciding where to go and when!

We’ve put together a short round-up of some of our top destinations and recommendations of when and where to travel. Plus we have a fantastic New Year sale now on, so there s no excuse not to start planning now!

    January – Dubai

Situated in the Arabian Desert, Dubai has very little rainfall and offers heat and sunshine pretty much year round. December through to February are a little cooler so offer fantastic conditions for getting out and about sightseeing, or playing golf.

The Maldives boasts a tropical climate with plentiful sunshine year round. However the dry season runs from January through to March/April, so February is the perfect month to bask in the sunshine on the many white sandy beaches.

    March – Mexico, Cancun

There is no bad time to visit the Mexican Rivera Maya. The stunning coast line and lively atmosphere are forever popular with holiday makers. Look out in the summer months though, from June through to October there is high humidity and the highest likelihood of hurricanes.

    April – Thailand, Koh Samui

Situated in the Gulf of Thailand, Koh Samui is its third largest island, surrounded by dive sites and fantastic beaches. The best time to visit is December through to June to avoid the rainy season and potential torrential storms.

    May – South Africa

South Africa is a vast country with many attractions, whether you’re interested in game viewing on a safari or visiting the wine lands of Stellenbosch. The best time to visit Kruger National Park is May to September where the animals congregate at watering holes, and the wine lands can be visited any time.

    Stay at:

California offers everything you could wish for, from sandy beaches to exploring national parks to visiting the bright lights of Hollywood. One of the best ways to see it all is on a fly drive, along the coastal highway from San Fran to LA, with lots in between:

    July – Canada

Canada is home to magnificent national parks, spectacular landscapes of snow-topped mountains and glaciers, and dramatic coast lines. You can’t do it all at once, but July is a great time to visit. Try Ontario with dramatic Niagara Falls, Toronto and Ottowa.

    August – Orlando

A popular time to visit during the summer months with families, but with good reason as the schools are out for summer and Disney World is in full swing with tons to offer families. Stay in a villa and hire a car to see more of this spectacular region.

The fantastic sub tropical climate of Mauritius means it’s always a great time to visit. However September through to December is one of the best times, with temperatures just hovering below 30 degrees. It’s also a time that sees many of the country’s ceremonies and festivals.

    October – Barbados

Visitors flock to Barbados year round, due to its tropical climes and endless white sandy beaches. Barbados boasts almost year round sunshine, while its east Caribbean location on the Atlantic Ocean ensures clean air and a fresh breeze. A haven of white, sandy beaches and clear, turquoise seas, world-class golf courses and rich colonial history, holidays in Barbados cater for a full range of tastes.

    November West Coast of Malaysia

Kuala Lumper, Panang and Pangkor situated on the West coast of Malaysia are perfect in the winter months, while the east coast is being battered by the intense rainy season. Kuala Lumpur is a vibrant city that features colonial architecture and lively markets, while Pangkor and Penang offer sensational tropical beach escapes.

The dry season in Cuba runs during the winter from November through to April, a very popular time for visitors with less rainfall and less humidity. Temperatures during this time average around 26°C. There is so much to see in Cuba it will leave you wanting more, with a mix of stunning architecture, lush gardens and sandy beaches.

Where to go in Japan #cheap #cheap #tickets

    #japan travel guide
    #

    Share

Two weeks is the minimum needed to skim the surface of what Japan can offer. The capital, Tokyo, and the former imperial city and thriving cultural centre of Kyoto, will be top of most visitors’ lists of where to go, and deservedly so, but you could avoid the cities entirely and head to the mountains or smaller islands to discover an alternative side of the country, away from the most heavily beaten tourist tracks.

It would be easy enough to spend two weeks just in Tokyo . The metropolis is home to some of the world’s most ambitious architecture, stylish shops and internationally celebrated restaurants and bars – as well as glimpses of traditional Japan at scores of temples, shrines and imperial gardens. Consider also taking in a couple of the city’s surrounding attractions, in particular the historic towns of Nikkō . home to the amazing Tōshō-gū shrine complex, and Kamakura . with its giant Buddha statue and tranquil woodland walks.

Northern Honshū sees surprisingly few overseas visitors, but its sleepy villages and relaxed cities deserve to be better known. The Golden Hall of Hiraizumi more than justifies the journey, and can be easily combined with the islet-sprinkled Matsushima Bay or rural Tōno . The region is also known for its vibrant summer festivals, notably those at Sendai, Aomori, Hirosaki and Akita, and for its sacred mountains, including Dewa-sanzan . home to a sect of ascetic mountain priests, and the eerie, remote wastelands of Osore-zan .

Further north, across the Tsugaru Straits, Hokkaidō is Japan’s final frontier, with many national parks including the outstanding Daisetsu-zan National Park . offering excellent hiking trails over mountain peaks and through soaring rock gorges. The lovely far northern islands of Rebun-tō and Rishiri-tō are ideal summer escapes. Hokkaidō’s most historic city is Hakodate . with its late nineteenth-century wooden houses and churches built by expat traders, while its modern capital, Sapporo . is home to the raging nightlife centre of Suskino and the original Sapporo Brewery. Winter is a fantastic time to visit and catch Sapporo’s amazing Snow Festival and go skiing at some of Japan’s top resorts including Niseko .

Skiing, mountaineering and soaking in hot springs are part of the culture of Central Honshū . an area dominated by the magnificent Japan Alps. Both the old castle town of Matsumoto . and Nagano . with its atmospheric temple of pilgrimage, Zenkō-ji, can be used as a starting point for exploring the region. Highlights include the tiny mountain resort of Kamikōchi and the immaculately preserved Edo-era villages of Tsumago and Magome . linked by a short hike along the remains of a 300-year-old stone-paved road. Takayama deservedly draws many visitors to its handsome streets lined with merchant houses and temples, built by generations of skilled carpenters. In the remote neighbouring valleys you’ll find the rare thatched houses of Ogimachi . Suganuma and Ainokura . remnants of a fast-disappearing rural Japan.

On the Sea of Japan coast, the historic city of Kanazawa is home to Kenroku-en, one of Japan’s best gardens, and the stunning 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa. Nagoya . on the heavily industrialized southern coast, is a more manageable city than Tokyo or Ōsaka, and has much to recommend it, including the fine Tokugawa Art Museum and many great places to eat. The efficient new airport nearby also makes the city a good alternative entry point. From Nagoya it’s a short hop to the pretty castle towns of Inuyama and Gifu . which holds summer displays of the ancient skill of ukai. or cormorant fishing.

South of the Japan Alps, the Kansai plains are scattered with ancient temples, shrines and the remnants of imperial cities. Kyoto . custodian of Japan’s traditional culture, is home to its most refined cuisine, classy ryokan, glorious gardens, and magnificent temples and palaces. Nearby Nara is a more manageable size but no slouch when it comes to venerable monuments, notably the great bronze Buddha of Tōdai-ji and Hōryū-ji’s unrivalled collection of early Japanese statuary. The surrounding region contains a number of still-thriving religious foundations, such as the highly atmospheric temples of Hiei-zan and Kōya-san, the revered Shinto shrine Ise-jingū . and the beautiful countryside pilgrimage routes of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Kumano region.

Not all of Kansai is so rarefied, though. The slightly unconventional metropolis of Ōsaka has an easy-going atmosphere and boisterous nightlife, plus several interesting sights. Further west, the port of Kōbe offers a gentler cosmopolitan atmosphere, while Himeji is home to Japan’s most fabulous castle, as well as some impressive modern gardens and buildings.

For obvious reasons Hiroshima is the most visited location in Western Honshū . On the way there, pause at Okayama to stroll around one of Japan’s top three gardens, Kōraku-en, and the appealingly preserved Edo-era town of Kurashiki . The beauty of the Inland Sea, dotted with thousands of islands, is best appreciated from the idyllic fishing village of Tomonoura . the port of Onomichi and the relaxed islands of Nao-shima, Ikuchi-jima and Miya-jima.

Crossing to the San-in coast, the castle town of Hagi retains some handsome samurai houses and atmospheric temples, only surpassed by even more enchanting Tsuwano . further inland. One of Japan’s most venerable shrines, Izumo Taisha . lies roughly midway along the coast, near the lake- and seaside city of Matsue . home to the region’s only original castle.

Location for Japan’s most famous pilgrimage, a walking tour around 88 Buddhist temples, Shikoku also offers dramatic scenery in the Iya valley and along its rugged coastline. Its largest city, Matsuyama, has an imperious castle and the splendidly ornate Dōgo Onsen Honkan – one of Japan’s best hot springs. There’s also the lovely garden Ritsurin-kōen in Takamatsu and the ancient Shinto shrine at Kotohira .

The southernmost of Japan’s four main islands, Kyūshū is probably best known for Nagasaki . an attractive and cosmopolitan city that has overcome its terrible war-time history. Hikers and onsen enthusiasts should head up into the central highlands, where Aso-san ’s smouldering peak dominates the world’s largest volcanic crater, or to the more southerly meadows of Ebino Kōgen. So much hot water gushes out of the ground in Beppu . on the east coast, that it’s known as Japan’s hot-spring capital. Fukuoka . on the other hand, takes pride in its innovative modern architecture and an exceptionally lively entertainment district.

Okinawa comprises more than a hundred islands stretching in a great arc from southern Kyūshū to within sight of Taiwan. An independent kingdom until the early seventeenth century, traces of the island’s distinctive, separate culture still survive. The beautifully reconstructed former royal palace dominates the capital city, Naha . but the best of the region lies on its remoter islands. This is where you’ll find Japan’s most stunning white-sand beaches and its best diving, particularly around the subtropical islands of Ishigaki and Iriomote .

Where to go in Brazil #travel #auction #sites

    #travel to brazil

The most heavily populated part of the country is the Southeast, where the three largest cities – São Paulo . Rio de Janeiro and Belo Horizonte – form a triangle around which the economy pivots. All are worth visiting but Rio. which really is as beautiful as it seems in pictures, is the one essential destination. The South. encompassing the states of Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul, is the most economically advanced part of the country and includes much of the enormous Paraná river system. The spectacular Iguaçu Falls on the border with Argentina is one of the great natural wonders of South America.

Central Brazil is dominated by an enormous plateau of savanna and rock escarpments, the Planalto Central . In the middle stands Brasília . the country’s space-age capital, built from scratch in the late 1950s and still developing today. The capital is the gateway to a vast interior, Mato Grosso . only fully charted and settled over the last fifty years; it includes the Pantanal . the largest wetlands in the world and the richest wildlife reserve anywhere in the Americas. North and west Mato Grosso shades into the Amazon . the world’s largest river basin and a mosaic of jungle, rivers, savanna and marshland that also contains two major cities – Belém. at the mouth of the Amazon itself, and Manaus . some 1600km upstream. The tributaries of the Amazon, rivers like the Tapajós, the Xingú, the Negro, the Araguaia or the Tocantins, are virtually unknown outside Brazil, but each is a huge river system in its own right.

The other major sub-region of Brazil is the Northeast. the part of the country that curves out into the Atlantic Ocean. This was the first part of Brazil to be settled by the Portuguese and colonial remains are thicker on the ground here than anywhere else in the country – notably in the cities of Salvador and São Luís and the lovely town of Olinda . It’s a region of dramatic contrasts: a lush tropical coastline with the best beaches in Brazil quickly gives way to the sertão. a semi-arid interior plagued by drought and grinding poverty. All the major cities of the Northeast are on the coast; the two largest are sprawling Recife and Salvador. Brazil’s most heavily Afro-Brazilian city and a fascinating place to visit. The coast of the Northeast is developing rapidly these days, taking advantage of proximity to Europe to attract package tourists and holiday-home buyers. But it is big enough for it still to be possible to get away from it all.

Where to Find Cheap Hotel Rates

Book a hotel room for less by using different discount sources. (Photo: hotel room image by Vonora from Fotolia.com )

    Overview

A cheap hotel room is a budget travel must, and there are several places to find the best of the bunch. Although rooms from online sources are a good starting point, it’s also a smart to look at privately owned options and locations that are a short drive from the action. By breaking away from the usual discount hotel haunts, a traveler can save even more than usual.

    Online Travel Discount Sites

The first places many budget travelers look are the big Web travel discounters like Expedia and Travelocity. All these are trusted sources that turn up very good deals. Better yet, reservations booked through these sites often carry a guarantee, with extra help if something goes wrong with the room. Frequent site users may even receive coupon deals that can save $100 or more on selected bookings.

    Story highlights

What may be a Flight 8501 window panel has been found, Singapore ministry says Thirty bodies have been recovered, officials say, and four of them have been identified Officials are focusing the search on a “most probable area” in the Java Sea

Searchers looking for more bodies and wreckage from AirAsia Flight QZ8501 continue to be hindered by tough weather conditions.

Ships, planes and helicopters are being used to try to find victims of the disaster. Most of the people on board the flight remain missing, and search teams are still looking for the main wreckage of the plane.

Efforts are being concentrated in a zone covering 1,575 square nautical miles (5,400 square kilometers) that officials believe is the “most probable area” to find the remains of the aircraft.

But on Friday, waves in the Java Sea as high as four meters (13 feet) were making it hard for divers search underwater.

The weather is “the biggest obstacle,” said Bambang Hermanu, chief of police in Indonesia’s Central Kalimantan province, where much of the search operation is based.

The clash of tradition and modernity is most intense in Bangkok . the first stop on almost any itinerary. Within its historic core you’ll find resplendent temples, canalside markets and the opulent indulgence of the eighteenth-century Grand Palace . while downtown’s forest of skyscrapers shelters cutting-edge fashion and decor boutiques and some achingly hip bars and clubs. After touchdown in Bangkok, much of the package-holiday traffic flows east to Pattaya . the country’s seediest resort, but for prettier beaches you’re better off venturing just a little further, to the islands of Ko Samet and the Ko Chang archipelago . with their squeaky white sand and shorefront bungalows.

Few tourists visit Isaan . the poorest and in some ways the most traditionally Thai region. Here, a trip through the gently modulating landscapes of the Mekong River valley, which defines Thailand’s northeastern extremities, takes in archetypal agricultural villages and a fascinating array of religious sites, while the southern reaches of Isaan hold some of Thailand’s best-kept secrets – the magnificent stone temple complexes of Phimai . Phanom Rung and Khao Phra Viharn . all built by the Khmers of Cambodia almost ten centuries ago. Closer to the capital, Khao Yai National Park encapsulates the phenomenal diversity of Thailand’s flora and fauna, which here range from wild orchids to strangling figs, elephants to hornbills.

At the heart of the northern uplands, Chiang Mai is both an attractive historic city and a vibrant cultural centre, with a strong tradition of arts, crafts and festivals. It does a burgeoning line in self-improvement courses – from ascetic meditation to the more earthly pleasures of Thai cookery classes – while the overriding enticement of the surrounding region is the prospect of trekking through villages inhabited by a richly mixed population of tribal peoples. Plenty of outdoor activities and courses, as well as hot springs and massages, can be enjoyed at Pai . a surprisingly cosmopolitan hill station for travellers, four hours northwest of Chiang Mai.

With Chiang Mai and the north so firmly planted on the independent tourist trail, the intervening central plains tend to get short shrift. Yet there is rewarding trekking around Umphang . near the Burmese border, and the elegant ruins of former capitals Ayutthaya and Sukhothai embody a glorious artistic heritage, displaying Thailand’s distinctive ability to absorb influences from quite different cultures. Kanchanaburi . stunningly located on the River Kwai . tells of a much darker episode in Thailand’s past, for it was along the course of this river that the Japanese army built the Thailand–Burma Railway during World War II, at the cost of thousands of POW lives.

Sand and sea are what most Thai holidays are about, though, and the pick of the coasts are in southern Thailand, where the Samui archipelago off the Gulf coast is one of the highlights. Ko Samui itself has the most sweeping white-sand beaches, and the greatest variety of accommodation and facilities to go with them. Ko Pha Ngan next door is still largely backpacker territory, where you have a stark choice between desolate coves and Hat Rin . Thailand’s party capital. The remotest island, rocky Ko Tao . is acquiring increasing sophistication as Southeast Asia’s largest dive-training centre.

Across on the other side of the peninsula, the Andaman coast boasts even more exhilarating scenery and the finest coral reefs in the country, in particular around the Ko Similan island chain, which ranks among the best dive sites in the world. The largest Andaman coast island, Phuket . is one of Thailand’s top tourist destinations and graced with a dozen fine beaches, though several have been overdeveloped with a glut of high-rises and tacky nightlife. Beautiful little Ko Phi Phi is a major party hub, surrounded by the turquoise seas and dramatic limestone cliffs that characterize the coastline throughout Krabi province . Large, forested Ko Lanta is, for the moment at least, a calmer alternative for families, but for genuine jungle you’ll need to head inland, to the rainforests of Khao Sok National Park .

Further down the Thai peninsula, in the provinces of the deep south . the teeming sea life and unfrequented sands of the Trang islands and Ko Tarutao National Marine Park are the main draws. There’s now the intriguing possibility of island-hopping your way down through them – in fact, all the way from Phuket to Penang in Malaysia – without setting foot on the mainland.

Where to go in Japan #travel #industry #jobs

Where to go in Brazil #gateway #travel

Where is the Best Place to Buy Plane Tickets Online? mobile

    #best cheap airline tickets
    #

wiseGEEK: Where is the Best Place to Buy Plane Tickets Online?

Finding the best place to buy plane tickets online can be influenced by a variety of factors. When a person plans to travel, where he plans to travel, and what airline he would like to use can all influence ticket price. It’s often best to start by looking at the airline’s websites, but many online travel sites and discount clubs can offer good deals, especially for people who buy ahead or who are flexible with their travel plans.

In general, people should first start by looking at the websites of the individual airlines that fly to a particular destination. Travelers who are making late arrangements and plan to travel within a week of purchasing the tickets may find that an airline may offer special deals for people who are buying plane tickets online. Shoppers should compare several airlines, when possible, to see if there are differences in rates.

It’s worthwhile for travelers to explore the many travel websites for additional deals while purchasing plane tickets online. Each website may have different quotes for tickets, and prices may depend on more than just the time and destiation. For example, a person booking both plane tickets and hotel reservations may find better deals at a website if both reservations are made at the same time. A person who doesn’t need to book a hotel might be better served at an airline’s website.

With the many airline and travel sites available, people should try to compare the rates on at least five to ten different sites. Some sites may offer very similar prices, so opening up the search to more than just a few sites can often yield the best prices. It also gives shoppers the opportunity to not only purchase plane tickets online, but to take advantage of other special deals that might be offered.

Travelers also might want to take any proposed deals and compare them to quotes from a travel agent as well. Auto clubs and discount shopping clubs often offer travel deals as well, so members should compare rates there too. In some cases, a great deal for plane tickets online might be matched or beaten.

People who shop for flights early can be at an advantage, since prices can change over time. Although last minute deals are possible, there’s always the chance that the destination won’t be discounted and a traveler will end up paying a very high price to get to his destination. If he knows his travel dates well in advance, the traveler can keep an eye open for fare sales. In most cases, prices are cheapest at least 14 days in advance of the travel date, and some deals require a 21-day advance purchase. Flights around major holidays are rarely discounted much, so it’s usually best to book the flight as soon as possible.

Shoppers should be certain to read the fine print before booking flights. Some deals are offered with limited travel dates, and prices will be higher if the traveler flies on a later date. It’s also best to purchase plane tickets online from a well-known company to help ensure that the deal is legitimate. Travelers should check any unknown sites with consumer organizations like the Better Business Bureau to make sure that they are legitimate and that they will treat customer’s personal information, like his credit card number, securely.

Search for AirAsia Flight QZ8501: Where things stand. #costa #mar #travel

Where to Go in Europe on Christmas Vacations

Holiday ski vacations are popular in Europe. (Photo: pili-011 image by Paco Ayala from Fotolia.com )

    Related Articles

A trip to Europe is always magical, but it is especially so during the holidays, when the Old World streets and shops twinkle with lights and festive window displays. Stroll through the elegant shops and Christmas markets set against the baroque backdrop of Vienna, listen to traditional carols by street performers in Dublin s teeming Grafton Street, or explore Scandinavian holiday traditions in sophisticated Oslo, one of the only cities in Europe where a ski resort is accessible by public transportation.

    Planning Your Holiday

Since winter is the low season for travel to Europe, you can pick up bargain airfares and vacation packages from major international airlines and tour operators. Often some activities, meals and local transportation are included in holiday packages, which begin around Thanksgiving and run through New Year s. If you choose a city as your destination, you ll have several Christmas and cultural activities to choose from, and you won t need a rental car. Book early to get the best rates, as holiday travel offers usually begin in August or September.

    Vienna: European Christmas Markets

Outdoor Christmas markets play a special role in Europe s holiday season, offering holiday ornaments, food and gifts, as well as a festive community event for locals and visitors. Vienna has four large markets: The market at the ornate summer palace of Habsburgs, Schloss Sch nbrunn, has the most finely crafted ornaments in the city, while the one at Belvedere Palace features a museum of stunning artwork indoors and an old-fashioned carousel at the outdoor market, especially whimsical in this grand setting. The Spittleberg market is held on two narrow parallel streets lined with 18th- and 19th-century houses, and features handcrafted items in a decidedly more modern vein. By far the largest of the Christmas markets, the Christkindlmarkt at Vienna s City Hall, the Rathaus, is a wonderland for children. The park surrounding the Rathaus is transformed into a Disney-esque Christmas world with snow-blowing gargoyles and giant lights in the shape of snowmen, stars and traditional red Viennese hearts filling the huge old oak trees, so definitely visit after dark.

    Dublin: An Entertaining Christmas

Dublin s lively nightlife, shopping and culture, combined with the friendliness of its residents, give new meaning to the phrase Christmas cheer. The lighted garlands crisscrossing over Grafton Street sway in the wintry breeze, while a group of young school boys dressed in Santa costumes sing We Wish You a Merry Christmas. Throngs of shoppers jockey for position to look at holiday window displays and side streets are mini art festivals with stalls full of paintings, watercolors, pottery, jewelry and other handmade items. Stop by the famous Bewley s Oriental Cafe in search of scones and other treats for afternoon tea, or take a pub-hopping tour in trendy Temple Bar, the city s nightlife hot spot.

Where To Get The Cheapest Airline Tickets To Japan

    06/04/2013 Adam

There is a good chance that almost everyone that views this site wants to visit Japan at least once in their lifetime, if not many times more and possibly live there.

    [yop_poll id= 6 ]

    Voting Closed

This list is not all inclusive as I m sure there are dozens of more airline websites, but these seem to be the major ones people use to try to get the best rates. It would be an incredible reference to everyone reading if in the comments section you could briefly include the:

    1. Website you use for cheapest tickets

    2. Country you fly out of

    3. Cost

    4. Month/Year of your flight

Any other details, strategy, or tactics you have for getting cheap tickets to Japan is highly appreciated!

Where to go in Thailand #peru #travel
