Initial release

Here is the demo video of Win+X Menu Editor

With Win+X Menu Editor you are able:

  • to add new items.
  • to remove any item of Win+X menu.
  • to change display name of any item of Win+X menu.
  • to reorder Win+X menu items.

An addition information

Win+X Menu Editor is based on the hashlink (http://www.withinwindows.com/2012/04/04/windows-8-secrets-the-winx-menu-and-its-hashing-algorithm/) source code by Rafael Rivera. Please respect him.

Main icon is daKirby309’s ” Desktop (http://dakirby309.deviantart.com/) ” icon + mspaint.exe

The Win+X Menu Editor is available in two editions – x86 and x64. Don’t use x86 version on Windows x64.
Starting with version 3.0, I eliminated separate versions for x64 and x86 Windows. From now, a single executable file can be used in both x64 and x86 editions.

Nice Tweak. But everytime I press apply all icons on the desktop are mixed together!

everytime I click apply:

my “fingerprint” programm (virtual airprint server from collobos) gives up, disappears from the taskbar, the fingerprint-service is also corrupted. I have to restart the service and kill the fingerprint task and start again.
Pretty much work. sad!unsure

everytime I click apply:

my “fingerprint” programm (virtual airprint server from collobos) gives up, disappears from the taskbar, the fingerprint-service is also corrupted. I have to restart the service and kill the fingerprint task and start again.
Pretty much work.

Have been using a few weeks now. Thank you.
Excellent program. Mine has the bare essentials:

Shutdown Link to shutdown VBScript File

Control Panel Link to Control Panel

File explorer Link to Computer Explorer
——————–
User folders Link to my pictures, videos, documents, etc.

Program Apps Link to C: ProgramData Microsoft Windows
Start Menu Programs (was hidden)
Desktop Link to Desktop

I created a shortcut for the Windows Update but it doesn’t add to the menu. It’s strange because it worked for everything else I tried.

Can you share your shortcut?

I right clicked the control panel icon in the “system and security” to create a shortcut. The shortcut has target “Control Panel System and Security Windows Update”.

i will try to fix this issue in upcoming version 2.0

i just can’t add any of my applications to the menu, except those presets.
im using the latest version of your program in the environment of win8 rtm

hmm
How I can reproduce the issue?
Your Windows 8 is x86 or x64?

Hi. Great program. I have the same issue as ZZZ, in that I created a shortcut to Network Connections and then added it to the editor. It shows in the editor but doesn’t appear in the Win + X Menu. Shortcuts created to ordinary programs works fine, so it must be Control Panel shortcuts it has a problem with.

Is this fixable, or is there a workaround/different method we can use?

this is NOT fixable, but we can use a different method
We can use shell commands for that purposes. I will publish all of them so you can easily create the required shortcut.
Also I will add such option to next version. I think I will do it today or tomorrow.
Right now you can create shortcut using

as shortcut target

ZZZ, for “Control Panel System and Security Windows Update” you can use
explorer.exe shell. <36eef7db-88ad-4e81-ad49-0e313f0c35f8>

Perfect – thanks very much.

The Network and Sharing Center shortcut worked for me, the only that didn’t work was the Windows Update.

I’ll try the shell command. Thx.

Only presets working. Unable to add to menu any .exe that I’ve tried.
They appear on Win+X Menu Editor interface, but never shows on Win+X menu.

Win 8 Pro 64-bit retail here (build 9200).

Kudos for the app, anyways, B’dozer.

Guys, please, if you have issues with this software, tell me more details
Which app you tried to add?
Please specify the full path to exe file.

I have no ideas how I can reproduce the bug without that information.
I will try to fix a bug once I repeat it.

I tried to add Firefox, and MS Office’s Outlook.

As I said, I’m running Win 8 Pro 64-bit retail (build 9200).
So I ran Win+X Menu Editor (64-bit version), clicked on ‘Add Program’ button, navigated to ‘C: Program Files (x86) Mozilla Firefox’, and choose firefox.exe.
When asked “Please enter new name”, I simply put Firefox (with a capital F), and OK.
Firefox showed up at the top of Group 3, then I clicked “Restart Explorer”.

Firefox didn’t appear in Win+X menu. I closed the app, ran it again (as Administrator), repeated the same steps, same result. Again with Outlook (C: Program Files (x86) Microsoft Office Office14 Outlook.exe), with same result.

Interesting, I tried then to add Group 4 and move Firefox to it. When I restarted explorer, The Win+x menu showed up with a division line ABOVE ‘Programs and Features’ (which is the top App for Group 3), but with nothing above that line.
I added presets then, to Group 4 (Notepad and Paint). Restarted explorer and both presets showed up ok on Win+X menu.

Sorry for the english. Regards..

Thanks you very much for this report.
Fixed. Please re-download.
I will do more workarounds for x86 resources in Windows x64 in near future.

Thanks a lot for this very nice piece of software.
The latest version 2.5.0.2 works absolutely perfectly on my Win 8 Pro x64.

add feature to add item+icon at the win-x menu.

Migrating DNS servers from Linux to Windows (Part 1) #hosted #windows

Migrating DNS servers from Linux to Windows (Part 1)

Introduction

A properly functioning Domain Name Services (DNS) infrastructure is essential for Active Directory environments. The simplest way of course to set up DNS name servers with Active Directory is to install and configure the DNS Server role on your Windows Server domain controllers. For various reasons however, some organizations already have deployed or may choose to deploy Linux name servers running the Berkeley Internet Name Daemon (BIND) implementation of DNS.

Linux BIND servers are lightweight and fast name servers that are easy to manage if you have basic knowledge of Linux administration, and provided they re running modern versions of BIND they re also interoperable with Active Directory domain controllers. In larger organizations there may also be political reasons for keeping your existing BIND servers instead of migrating them to Windows Server DNS. For example, the administrators of your current DNS infrastructure may be unwilling to relinquish their control over DNS to Active Directory admins. And when two companies merge or an acquisition occurs, existing cultures of Linux and Windows Server administration may clash.

The TechNet documentation on migrating from BIND to Windows Server DNS has been around since Windows Server 2003 but has not been updated since Windows Server 2008 so it s well worth revisiting the subject. The documentation is also sparse and provides only minimal guidance on the actual steps involved in such migrations. Because of this, I ve asked my colleague Todd Lamothe to walk us through the steps involved in migrating a DNS zone from a Linux BIND name server to a Windows server running the DNS Server role. Todd is the principal consultant for Nattrac Consulting Ltd. where he does IT consulting focusing on Windows deployments, Windows Server technology, Azure Cloud and Exchange / Office 365 deployments. He has been working in the IT field for 20 years, and you can find out more about him at http://www.about.me/ToddLamothe. Todd has also contributed content in the past to our WServerNews newsletter, for example see his guest editorial on data deduplication in Windows Server 2012 in Issue #942 of our newsletter. Let s now watch Todd as he walks us through the migration process.

Walkthrough of BIND to Windows DNS migration

In this article, I am going to walk you through the steps to migrate off a Linux box for DNS and migrate services to a Windows Server 2012 R2 computer. I am doing this currently for one of my customers who is hosting their DNS on an out of date Red Hat Linux server. We are then using a third party to manage the DNS traffic and our master server provides zone updates to those machines and does not serve any public traffic.

Preparing the Linux box

On the Linux box we need to ensure that zone transfers to the new Windows boxes are allowed.

Edit the named.conf file, which in this server s case is located in /etc/named. For each of the domains that we wish to migrate to the new server we should check that there is a line, which is written like this example:

This grants permission to this DNS server to allow a zone transfer to another box. Any current secondary servers will need to be here and we need to add the IP of our server. Once we have added the IP address of our new Windows Server 2012 R2 server for each domain, we are ready to move on to the next step of preparing the Windows Server.

Preparing the Windows Server

Install Windows, name the box and give it an IP address. The IP you give it should match what you configured in Linux for the allow transfer.

Next add the DNS Server role to the server, once it is added, open the DNS console.

Right-click on Forward Lookup Zones and then add the first domain. In my first example I am using carttan.ca:

Click on Secondary Zone and click Next:

Enter in the DNS name for the zone you are creating. Then click Next:

Enter in the IP Address of the Master DNS server, press enter and then when it goes green, click Next. If it doesn t go green, then there is an issue and check the Linux server:

Click Finish to close the wizard and return to the DNS Manager console:

Check that the records are coming across properly.

Repeat these steps for each and every domain that needs to be migrated.

Promoting the Windows Server to Primary Master for the DNS Zone

Right click on the Zone and go to properties to convert from Secondary to Master Server:

Click on Change:

Click on Primary Zone and click OK.

Next click on the Zone Transfers tab:

Click on Allow Zone Transfers and click on Only To The Following Servers. Click Edit and enter the information for the servers you want to be secondary servers. These will be the servers you direct internet traffic to. These could be secondary servers hosted anywhere. I have also configured my firewall to allow DNS traffic to these servers only.

Next we will configure the Start of Authority record. We need to change the primary server. Here we will use one of our external responding servers as our primary. Also set the Responsible person and be sure to increment the serial number once you are complete with the changes:

Setting up the Secondary DNS Servers

Install Windows, name the box and give it an IP address.

Next add the DNS Server role to the server, once it is added, open the DNS console. This should be familiar as these are the steps we ve already completed with setting up the master DNS server:

Right-click on Forward Lookup Zones and then add the first domain. Again, in my example, I am using carttan.ca:

Click on Secondary Zone and click Next. The steps to follow are identical to what we first completed when we setup the first Windows Server prior to making it a master server.

Check that the records are coming across properly. Repeat these steps for each domain that needs to be migrated.

Create a new record for your external DNS servers. These need to be addresses that are externally routable (which I have not used in my example here), next add them into your DNS servers in the Name Servers tab removing the one server that is listed for internal. In my example I only have one server showing up now:

As you can see in the above example, there is no mention of ns1.carttan.ca which is the master server for these domains. Next let s turn off DNS resolution for any domain which we do not host. Right click on the name of the server and go to the advanced tab. Check Disable recursion:

The final steps to complete are changing your internet registration files so that the DNS servers are pointed to the new external servers.

Conclusion

In the second article of this two-part series we ll examine some other issues associated with migrating DNS from BIND to Windows Server and will provide some additional resources on the topic.

PowerShell Script To Create A Converged Fabric For Clustered Windows Server

PowerShell Script To Create A Converged Fabric For Clustered Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V Host

Posted on May 31, 2012 by AFinn in Hyper-V // 12 Comments

Note: This post was originally written using the Windows Server 8 (aka 2012) Beta. The PowerShell cmdlets have changed in the Release Candidate and this code has been corrected to suit it.

After the posts of the last few weeks, I thought I’d share a script that I am using to build a converged fabric hosts in the lab. Some notes:

  1. You have installed Windows Server 2012 on the machine.
  2. You are either on the console or using something like iLO/DRAC to get KVM access.
  3. All NICs on the host will be used for the converged fabric. You can tweak this.
  4. This will not create a virtual NIC in the management OS (parent partition or host OS).
  5. You will make a different copy of the script for each host in the cluster to change the IPs.
  6. You could strip out all but the Host-Parent NIC to create converged fabric for standalone host with 2 or 4 * 1 GbE NICs

And finally …. MSFT has not published best practices yet. This is still a beta release. Please verify that you are following best practices before you use this script.

OK…. here we go. Watch out for the line breaks if you copy paste:

write-host Creating virtual switch with QoS enabled
New-VMSwitch ConvergedNetSwitch -MinimumBandwidthMode weight -NetAdapterName ConvergedNetTeam -AllowManagementOS 0

write-host Setting default QoS policy
Set-VMSwitch ConvergedNetSwitch -DefaultFlowMinimumBandwidthWeight 10

write-host Creating virtual NICs for the management OS
Add-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -Name Host-Parent -SwitchName ConvergedNetSwitch
Set-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -Name Host-Parent -MinimumBandwidthWeight 10

Add-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -Name Host-Cluster -SwitchName ConvergedNetSwitch
Set-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -Name Host-Cluster -MinimumBandwidthWeight 10

Add-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -Name Host-LiveMigration -SwitchName ConvergedNetSwitch
Set-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -Name Host-LiveMigration -MinimumBandwidthWeight 10

Add-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -Name Host-iSCSI1 -SwitchName ConvergedNetSwitch
Set-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -Name Host-iSCSI1 -MinimumBandwidthWeight 10

#Add-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -Name Host-iSCSI2 -SwitchName ConvergedNetSwitch
#Set-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -Name Host-iSCSI2 -MinimumBandwidthWeight 15

write-host Waiting 30 seconds for virtual devices to initialise
Start-Sleep -s 30

write-host Configuring IPv4 addresses for the management OS virtual NICs
New-NetIPAddress -InterfaceAlias vEthernet (Host-Parent) -IPAddress 192.168.1.51 -PrefixLength 24 -DefaultGateway 192.168.1.1
Set-DnsClientServerAddress -InterfaceAlias vEthernet (Host-Parent) -ServerAddresses 192.168.1.40

New-NetIPAddress -InterfaceAlias vEthernet (Host-Cluster) -IPAddress 172.16.1.1 -PrefixLength 24

New-NetIPAddress -InterfaceAlias vEthernet (Host-LiveMigration) -IPAddress 172.16.2.1 -PrefixLength 24

New-NetIPAddress -InterfaceAlias vEthernet (Host-iSCSI1) -IPAddress 10.0.1.55 -PrefixLength 24

#New-NetIPAddress -InterfaceAlias vEthernet (Host-iSCSI2) -IPAddress 10.0.1.56 -PrefixLength 24

That will set up the following architecture:

QoS is set up as follows:

  • The default (unspecified links) is 10% minimum
  • Parent: 10%
  • Cluster: 10%
  • Live Migration: 20%

My lab has a single VLAN network. In production, you should have VLANs and trunk the physical switch ports. Then (I believe), you’ll need to add a line for each virtual NIC in the management OS (host) to specify the right VLAN (I ve not tested this line yet on the RC release of WS2012 watch out for teh VMNetowrkAdaptername parameter):

Set-VMNetworkAdapterVLAN –ManagementOS –VMNetworkAdapterName vEthernet (Host-Parent) –Trunk –AllowedVLANList 101

Now you have all the cluster connections you need, with NIC teaming, using maybe 2 * 10 GbE, 4 * 1 GbE, or maybe even 4 * 10 GbE if you’re lucky.

Please follow and like us:

This works in Windows 8, I assume Server 2012 as well:

add-vmnetworkadapter -managementOS -name Storage -SwitchName New Virtual Switch
get-vmnetworkadapter -managementos -name Storage | set-vmnetworkadaptervlan -access -vlanid 213

Trunk commands do require the NativeVlanID and AllowedVlanIDList as well.

If i have two 10G Broadcom NICs on my server, can I team the two NICs using WS2012 native NIC teaming and create virtual switches to use for Management, Cluster, VM traffic and also for ISCSI traffic.
ISCSI only for VM in-guest clustering.
Can I create ISCSI virtual NICs on teamed physical NICs. Do Microsoft best practices allow this?

I ve discussed this plenty on my blog. There s a search option on the top right.

Tried to deploy described scenario in my lab and some time later VMM 2012 SP1 crashed all those dreams in one click I suppose ConvergedFabric scenario are not supported one by VMM only I ve done is Allow host access using VLAN: 0 checkbox cleared (Host properties – Virtual Switches – ConvergetNetSwitch). Then VMM killed all vNICs created in PoSh and left host on it s own without connections.

VMM network deployment is incompatible with any networking you deploy directly on a host. It will overwrite it, and likely break VM connectivity. You have to choose one or the other.

is this for outgoing traffic only or does this work for incoming too?
if so do you have to configure switches to get most out of this?

Outgoing. You can tag packets for the switches to apply QoS too.

Just wondering what switch independent teaming would be used in this scenario, seeing as VMs (usually Hyper-V Port) would also be connected?

I ve a team of two physical nics with three virtual nics presented to the OS. The associated physical switch ports are trunked. I ve tried a couple of variations of the set-vmnetworkadaptervlan cmdlet, but unable to communicate with the virtual nics. On each host, I can ping the relevant IP addresses for each virtual nic, but cannot ping beyond the host. Any suggestions welcome.

Set-VMNetworkAdapterVlan –ManagementOS –VMNetworkAdapterName Management –Access –VlanId 151

Set-VMNetworkAdapterVLAN -ManagementOS -VMNetworkAdapterName Management -Trunk -NativeVlanId 151 -AllowedVlanIdList 151

Hello Crossnet, and welcome to Seven Forums.

If you mean that you do not have the Pin to taskbar option in the context menu, then this is usually caused by using a XP method to remove the shortcut arrow icon instead of the proper Vista and Windows 7 method. If this may be the case, then try restoring the default shortcut arrow overlay icon using either method in the tutorial below, then see if you have the Pin to taskbar option afterwards.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Thanx for the answer. Yes, i remove the shortcut arrow icon. But i do that since i installed windows 7 for the first time about six month ago. and there is no problem with taskbar pin. But now, suddenly the taskbar pin is disappear from my windows 7 taskbar and it can’t to enable/show again.

and also i don’t have the Pin to taskbar option in the context menu

As a test, go ahead and restore the shortcut arrow using the tutorial link above to see if that restores your pin to taskbar option. If it does, then you can use the same tutorial to remove the shortcut arrow.

If you removed the shortcut arrow using one of these all-in-one type tune-up/customize programs, then be sure that you do not still have it set to not have a shortcut arrow.

Moving pinned programs to the right of the taskbar
Hello, Hopefully i’m posting at the right section. But I wanted to know if it is possible to make your pinned programs be at the right of the taskbar. So lets say you open a new program right now it comes to the right of the pinned programs right? Is it possible to move the pinned programs.

Taskbar – Separate Pinned Programs
How to Sort Pinned Programs into Categories on the Taskbar This is similar to how to pin folders to the taskbar, but my own ‘tweaked’ way of doing it with programs Example: Here is my version of the program sorting: Update- You can do this to make Shutdown/Restart buttons as well.

Programs pinned to taskbar, loose their Icon
I have Windows 7 RC installed on two different computers and this has happened on both. I’ll install a program I use a lot, pin it to the taskbar and some of the icons will lose their original icon after awhile. It doesn’t seem to effect the operation of the program or the shortcut to the.

Can’t Switch Programs On Screen Via Programs Pinned to Taskbar
An example: I open Firefox full-screen. If I try to switch to Outlook, which is open and showing in the taskbar, it wont let me. I am forced to minimize Firefox Same thing happens when Outlook is full screen.

Odd problem with pinned programs on taskbar
I seem to be having a problem with the pinned programs on my taskbar and I was wondering if anybody can help me here. Most of the programs on my taskbar simply highlight the icon that I clicked when I want to start the program or start a new instance of the program. However, a select few programs.

Problem with right click on programs pinned to taskbar.

  • Exiting an iOS App with Xamarin #ios #app #development #windows

    #

Exiting an iOS App with Xamarin

The team is in the middle of building an iOS app for iPad using Xamarin which will be enterprise deployed. A requirement came up to automatically shut down the after a certain action was performed by the user. Usually it s recommended to not kill your app on iOS and apps may fail certification if you do this. Make sure to read the iOS documentation .

Now because we are doing an Enterprise Deploy and not an App Store Deploy. we have a few options and won t fail any certification for using these techniques, but if you are going through the App Store certification process use at your own risk.

    Crashing Your App

Our first attempt was to crash the app after showing a UIAlert notifying the user that the app will be shutting down. Wasn t too thrilled about this procedure but to accomplish this, basically you just throw an exception.

Does what it needs to, but crashing your app to exit it is not the best way to make it happen.

    Calling exit() Function

Next option is to P/Invoke the exit() function. To accomplish this using C# do the following

    Then just call the function

Calling this may cause your app to fail App Store Certification and not the best user experience. It also will cause applicationWillTerminate and some UIApplicationDelegate methods to not be called. Here is an excerpt from iOS documentation

    Using terminateWithSuccess

Third option is to call terminateWithSuccess which is a private method of (UIApplication *)sharedApplication .

Using Xamarin.iOS you basically have to use a Selector to call the private method as follows

Calling private methods is not allowed according to Apple certification guidelines and you will most likely get you rejected from the app store.

    Using NSThread.exit

Last option is to call NSThread.exit from your main thread.

According to the documentation, you should avoid calling this because it doesn t give you a chance to clean up or possibly save state.

    So What to Use.

So typically in an iOS app you don t usually exit your app (same goes for Windows Phone and Android it s a free for all) but there are sometimes situations where this is required. If you are creating an enterprise deploy app, you should be fine. If you are creating an app that will be put through the certification process, you may not pass with some of the options used. We have never had to use this feature in an App Store app but my order in which I would try would be

    1. P/Invoke exit()
    2. NSThread.exit()
    3. throwing an exception
    4. terminateWithSuccess

Thanks go out to the Xamarin support team (specifically Brendan Zagaeski) for pointing the team in the right direction.

How to Reset / Recover / Change Forgotten Administrator Password in Windows?

Many times we face this problem when we or our friends forget Administrator account password in Windows and can’t log into Windows. So here we are posting a few methods which can be used to change, reset or recover forgotten Windows password in Windows.

DISCLAIMER: Following information should be used only if its your system and you have forgotten account password. Don’t use this information to access a system which is not yours without permission.

Method 1: Using Welcome or Login Screen

This method is the first thing which should always do whenever you forget your Windows login password. When we install Windows, it automatically creates a hidden user account “Administrator ” and sets its password to blank. So if you forget your user account password then try this:

    1. Start your computer and when you see Windows Welcome screen (Login screen), press ctrl + alt + del keys twice and it’ll show Classic Login box.

    2. Now type Administrator in Username box and leave Password box empty. Now press Enter and you should be able to log into Windows.

    3. Now you can reset your account password from “Control Panel – User Accounts “.

Same thing can be done using Safe Mode. In Safe Mode Windows will show this in-built Administrator account in Login screen.

Method 2: Using Password Reset Disk

Windows XP and later Windows versions provide a built-in method to recover forgotten password by using “Password Reset Disk “. If you created a Password Reset Disk in past, you can use that disk to reset the password.

If you don’t know how to create a password reset disk, lets tell you in details. You can create the password reset disk using Control panel – User Accounts applet.

First open Control Panel and click on User Accounts icon. It’ll open User Accounts window. Now click on your user account and then click on “Prevent a forgotten password ” link given in left-side pane. It’ll open forgotten password wizard as shown in following screenshot:

Follow the instructions and you’ll have a password reset disk in your hand.

Method 3: Using “Net User” DOS Command

You can also use a built-in DOS command “Net User ” to change any desired user account password within seconds. You’ll need access to Command Prompt window in this method:

    1. Open Command Prompt as Administrator as mentioned here and run following command:

    2. It’ll list all available user accounts in Windows.

    3. Now run following command:

    net user user_name new_password

Replace “user_name ” with the desired user account name and replace “new_password ” with your desired password.

    net user “Vishal Gupta” 12345

Here “Vishal Gupta” is the user account name and 12345 is the new password.

    4. That’s it. It’ll immediately change the user account password.

Thanks to our reader “rkk djb” for sharing this trick.

Method 4: Using Windows XP Setup Loophole

If the above mentioned tricks don’t work for you, try following trick which is actually a loophole in Windows XP Setup and also a big security hole:

    1. Boot using Windows XP Setup CD and follow the instruction like Accepting EULA, etc.

    2. When it asks to repair your existing Windows installation, accept it and press ” R ” key to run the repair.

    3. Setup will start repairing your Windows and will start copying files, etc.

    4. After a few minutes setup will restart your system and when it restarts, don’t press any key when it shows “Press any key to continue. “. Otherwise Setup will start from the beginning. Don’t press any key and setup will resume where it left.

    5. Now it’ll start doing other tasks and will show a small progressbar with a few details in left side.

    6. Look carefully at the details and when it shows “Installing devices “, press Shift +F10 keys together in your keyboard.

    7. It’ll open a Command Prompt window. Now type nusrmgr.cpl and press Enter key.

    8. It’ll open the same “User Accounts” window which you see in Control Panel.

    9. Now you can remove or reset any account password without any problem.

Method 5: Using Bootable Rescue Disk

You can also use various bootable rescue CDs to reset your Windows password as mentioned in following link:

Method 6: Perform a Clean Installation of Windows

If all fails, simply reinstall Windows and create new user account. To recover lost data, you can use Data recovery tools available on net but the chances will be less to get your data back.

That’s all we can suggest. If you know about any other method or tool, feel free to share it in your comment.

Getting started with developing for Windows Phone 8 #windows #mobile #app

    #

Getting started with developing for Windows Phone 8

[ This article is for Windows Phone 8 developers. If you’re developing for Windows 10, see the latest documentation. ]

Start developing Windows Phone apps with this step-by-step guide. Get the tools you need, build your first app, and test it on your own phone. Find out how to make the most of the platform and the tools. Download samples. Get suggestions for your next steps.

If you’ve previously developed .NET or XAML apps, you can transfer these skills to develop Windows Phone apps that use XAML for the UI and C# or Visual Basic for the code. If you know C++, you can develop a Direct3D app for Windows Phone 8 in that language to take full advantage of the phone’s graphics hardware.

This topic contains the following sections.

Start here to learn about Windows Phone apps and get the tools you need to create them.

    Download the free developer tools

Download the Windows Phone SDK 8.0, which includes all the tools you need to create Windows Phone apps: Microsoft Visual Studio Express 2012 for Windows Phone, project templates for creating new Windows Phone apps, the Windows Phone emulator for testing, and more.

Windows Phone SDK 8.0 installs everything you need to build and test apps for both Windows Phone 8 and Windows Phone OS 7.1. You don’t have to install Windows Phone SDK 7.1 to build apps for Windows Phone OS 7.1. However, if you already have Windows Phone SDK 7.1 installed, you don’t have to uninstall it before you install Windows Phone SDK 8.0.

If you already have Visual Studio 2012 Professional or higher, the SDK templates and tools are integrated into your existing installation of Visual Studio.

Windows Phone SDK 8.0 requires 64-bit Windows 8 Pro or higher. You can’t develop Windows Phone 8 apps on Windows 7, on Windows Server 2008, or on Windows Server 2012. The Windows Phone 8 Emulator has special hardware, software, and configuration requirements. For more info, see System requirements for the emulator for Windows Phone 8 .

    Register your phone for development

Sign up for a developer account and register your Windows Phone so you can test your apps on a phone. If you don’t have a Windows Phone, you can still test your apps in the emulator.

    Learn about the platform

What can you do in a Windows Phone app? Read about the new and improved features built into the Windows Phone 8 platform.

After you download and install the tools, you’re ready to write apps.

    Write your first app

Walk through the steps to create a simple web browser as your first Windows Phone app.

Upgrade an existing app from Windows Phone OS 7.1

Upgrade your existing Windows Phone OS 7.1 app to target Windows Phone 8 with a single click in Visual Studio.

Port an existing app from another platform

Find resources to help you port existing iOS or Android apps to the Windows Phone platform.

Learn how the developer tools help you to design, create, and test great apps.

Review the list of installed tools

Understand the purpose of the tools installed with the SDK and their place in the app development cycle.

    Develop apps with Visual Studio

Get comfortable in Visual Studio, a complete and extensible development environment for Windows Phone apps. Visual Studio includes a visual designer with many built-in controls and a powerful code editor.

Start projects quickly with project templates

Use project templates in Visual Studio as a starting point for creating various types of Windows Phone apps.

Build apps that meet the certification requirements and satisfy users.

    Design a high-quality app

Find guidance about best practices for designing the user experience of your Windows Phone app.

Discover all the testing tools included with the SDK to help you create a stable and responsive app.

    Pass the app certification tests

Review the requirements that your app has to meet before it can be published in the Windows Phone Store.

Get answers to your programming questions from other Windows Phone developers and from other Microsoft resources.

Find answers about writing Windows Phone apps

Find answers and solve problems as you develop Windows Phone apps.

    User Profile Wizard 3.12

    Simple. Scalable. Low cost

User Profile Wizard 3.12 is the latest version of ForensiT s powerful workstation migration tool. User Profile Wizard will migrate your current user profile to your new user account so that you can keep all your existing data and settings.

    Large-scale migration made easy

User Profile Wizard has been used to automatically migrate hundreds of thousands of workstations to new domains. It can be used to migrate workstations to a new domain from any existing Windows network, or from a Novell NDS network; it can join standalone computers to a domain for the first time, or migrate workstations from a domain back to a workgroup.

No need to lose personal data and settings

A User Profile is where Windows stores your stuff. Normally, when you change your user account Windows will create a new profile for you, and you lose all your data and settings – your “My Documents”, “My Pictures” and “My Music” files and all the other information that makes your computer personal to you, like your desktop wallpaper, Internet favorites and the lists of documents you’ve recently opened.

User Profile Wizard is an easy-to-use migration tool that means this doesn’t need to happen – you can simply migrate your original profile to your new user account. User Profile Wizard does not move, copy or delete any data. Instead it configures the profile “in place” so that it can be used by your new user account. This makes the process both very fast and very safe.

With the User Profile Wizard Deployment Kit you can build a scalable, enterprise solution to automatically migrate tens of thousands of workstations.

    Scalable – up or down

Unlike some alternatives, User Profile Wizard does not assume that there is an enterprise directory in place. It supports all environments from Small Business Server through to a Global Domain Consolidation.

    Benefits

    • Migrates all user profile data and settings on Windows XP/Windows 7/8 and Windows 10
    • Automatically joins a machine to a new domain
    • Supports domain migrations over a VPN
    • Supports all Active Directory and Samba domains
    • Migrates from a domain back to a workgroup
    • Includes Enterprise strength scripting support
    • Supports push migrations of remote machines
    • Tried and trusted – over one million licenses sold

    Corporate and Professional Editions

User Profile Wizard comes in two editions. Read our User Profile Wizard Feature Comparison to find out what features are availble in the Corporate and Professional editions. The Corporate Edition is licensed per workstation. The Professional Edition is licensed per technician.

    Understanding GPO in Windows Server 2012 #server #2012, #group #policy, #windows

Understanding GPO in Windows Server 2012

Group Policies are computer or user settings that can be defined to control or secure the Windows server and client infrastructure. Understanding GPO in Windows Server 2012 before actually configuring and applying policy settings is very important. It is easy to understand GPO in Windows Server 2012. There are some new features of GP O in Windows Server 2012 .

Understanding GPO in Windows Server 2012

Two main components of GPO are, GPO Object and GPO Policy Settings.

GPO Object. GPO Object is an active directory object that has various group policy settings. These policy settings can be user settings or computer settings and can be applied to user or computers. GPO objects are stored in GPO container. The GPO object is stored in active directory database and each object has its own unique GUID (Globally Unique Identifier).

GPO Policy Settings. GPO policy settings are the real settings within GPO object that defines particular action. GPO policy settings comes from GPO templates which are stored in SYSVOL folder of each domain controller. For example, Prohibit Access to Control Panel is a GPO policy setting that will simply disable access to control panel. Most of the GPO settings can be enabled, disabled or not configured. The example is shown below,

When you create a group policy, the GPO object is created and stored in GPO container in active directory and at the same time, GPO template is created and stored in SYSVOL folder. After creating a group policy, it can be linked to Sites, Domains and OUs. Group policy is process in the order of LSDOU.

    1. Local Group Policy
    2. Sites
    3. Domains
    4. Organizational OUs

There are certain things that you should remember while creating and applying GPO settings. As stated earlier there are computer settings and user settings of each GPO object. Computer settings are applied at startup of the client machine. User settings are applied at use logon. Policies refresh can be initiated manually by using, C:\ gpupdate /force command or C:\ Invoke-Gpupdate powerShell cmdlet.

In fresh domain controller there are two default group policy settings configured. They are:

    1. Default Domain Policy. This policy is linked to the entire domain and has policies like password policies, account lockout policies and kerberos protocol policies. It is recommended that not to edit this policy. If you want to link new group policy then create new GPO and link to the domain.
    2. Default Domain Controller Policy. This policy setting is applied to domain controllers and is linked to domain controllers OU. This policy affects domain controllers only.

    Our Mission.

The mission of RCCD Distance Education (formerly Open Campus) is to extend access to learning through distance education. Objectives: To facilitate learning at a distance, Distance Education provides:

    • Educational technology to the colleges, faculty, and students to support the delivery of online-based courses and services
    • Professional development and training for faculty
    • Expertise and experience
    • Blackboard management, production and problem solving.

As of April 21, the Open Campus department has changed its name to Distance Education. We thank you for your patience as we work to complete the changes to website by the middle of summer.

What Are Online Based or Distance Education classes?

Online-based courses, also called Distance Education classes, may take two different forms:

Online classes are taken exclusively over the Internet. Please note that, while some online courses provide all instructional content over the Internet, others may require some on-campus meetings. Please see the course schedule or WebAdvisor for more information.

Hybrid classes meet both on campus and online. Think of them as a combination or blending of online classes and face-to-face classes.

In a hybrid class, you will attend meetings on campus during the dates and times listed in the schedule of classes. Since the on-campus portion of hybrid classes could take place at any of our three colleges (Riverside City, Norco or Moreno Valley), hybrid classes are listed in the schedule by the college where the on-campus meetings will take place.

Are there Face-to-Face classes that use the Internet?

Web-Enhanced classes are traditional face-to-face classes that are supplemented with course websites and the use of Internet resources. Unlike hybrid or fully-online classes, all web-enhanced class meetings take place on campus.

    Where Do I Start?

If you receive this Windows Script Host access is disabled on this machine, Contact your administrator for details message box, on your Windows 10/8/7 computer, then this post may interest you. Today we will see how you can enable or disable Windows Script Host.

Windows Script Host access is disabled on this machine

Windows Script Host or WSH, is a Microsoft technology that provides scripting abilities like batch files, but includes many more features. Such Scripts can be run directly from the desktop by double-clicking a script file, or from a command prompt. It can be run from either the protected-mode Windows-based host wscript.exe. or the real-mode command shell-based host cscript.exe .

Several HTML malware have been reported to use WSH objects as a result of which, those who do not require this feature, tend to disable it. But disabling WSH, will prevent users from running any scripts, including VBScript and JScript scripts, that rely on this technology and some software may require this feature to be enabled.

    Enable, disable Windows Script Host

To enable or disable Windows Script Host, type regedit .exe in Run box and hit Enter to open the Registry Editor.

    Navigate to the following key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows Script Host\Settings

Double Click on it and give it Value Data 1 to enable it.

    • A value of 1 will enable Windows Script Host
    • A value of 0 will disable Windows Script Host.

Click on OK and exit the Registry. If you don t see this entry, then you may need to create it, as it does not exist by default in Windows.

You will now, no longer receive the Windows Script Host access is disabled on this machine. In this way you can enable or disable Windows Script Host.

Build PXE Boot Server for Windows with CCBoot – a Powerful

    #

    PXE Boot Server Brief

PXE was introduced as part of the Wired for Management framework by Intel, it’s short for Preboot eXecution Environment or Pre-Execution Environment. Nutshell, PXE boot server is a combination of DHCP server and TFTP server. It responds requests from diskless stations over network, allocates IP addresses via DHCP for them, pushes necessary data to these stations so that they can boot on LAN even without a harddisk. CCBoot supports install windows 7 via pxe boot .

How to configure windows pxe server. With PXE boot server. diskless computers booting process is as bellow:Power on – BIOS – PXE stack built-in the NIC (Network Information Center)- NBP (Network Boot Program) downloading from server to client’s RAM by TFTP- NBP’s responsibility to perform the next step (a.k.a. 2nd stage boot).

    Benifits of PXE boot server

    • 1, Reduce initial capital and implementation costs, reduce power and cooling requirements, reduce complexity and risk.
    • 2, Accelerate deployments, upgrades, and server repurposing.
    • 3, Implement enhanced Disaster Recovery solutions.

As an administrator responsible for a network of dozens of computers or more, PXE boot server program will be very helpful. it can handle Windows XP, 2003, Vista, Windows 7 and 2008 booting. PXE boot server software will drastically reduce your daily workload. If you want to install or upgrade various softwares for all computers in the network, you just need to do operate the boot image, then all computers using this image can get changed after rebbot. It can also bring you enhanced Disaster Recovery solutions, all computers will get into a clean OS after reboot.
In this article, we will introduce a Windows based PXE boot server software – CCBoot.

  • Install PXE Boot Server with CCBoot and Use It for Network Booting Windows

    1. Install PXE Boot Server with CCBoot
Download PXE boot server software – CCBoot server installation package from – http://www.ccboot.com/download.htm .
Launch ccbootsetup.exe on the PXE boot server and keep press the next button to the end.

CCBoot will use the following ports – 67 (DHCP), 69 (TFTP), 3260 (iSCSI), 1000 (Image Upload), 8001 (Service Control). You need to open these ports in the firewall of the PXE boot server. Since CCBoot v2.1, you also need to open port 66. V2.1 uses port 66 as DHCP backup.

Note: Please shut down the other DHCP services on the LAN especially the DHCP service in the router.

Launch CCBoot and you will get the main interface as bellow:

  • Initialize the PXE Boot Server
    Demo Environment

    Server IP: 192.168.1.10
    Gateway: 192.168.1.1
    DNS Address: 192.168.1.1
    IP Mask: 255.255.255.0
    DHCP Range: 192.168.1.101-192.168.1.254

Launch the PXE boot server software – CCBoot, menu Options – Options Wizard and configure step by step as bellow:

You need to select the correct local IP address as DHCP Server IP . Press Scan DHCP to check if there are other DHCP services on the LAN. You need to stop other DHCP services on the LAN.

Set Server IP Address . Normally, it’s the same as DHCP Server IP .
Set Write-back File Path and Image Save Path as you want.

Write-back File Path is used to store the clients’ write-back data. You’d better use a big volume hard disk as Write-back File Path . This disk should be formatted as NTFS and 64K bytes per cluster.

Image Save Path is used to store the boot images. This disk should be also formatted as NTFS and 64K bytes per cluster. You’d better use a fast speed hard disk as Image Save Path . For example, use an SAS hard disk.

Keep default values in Server Cache Settings .

Keep default values in Other Settings . Press the Finish button and confirm the popup dialog box.

  • Upload Image to The PXE Boot Server for Windows XP
To network boot Windows XP with the PXE boot server software – CCBoot, we first of all need to create a system image and here’re the steps –
    1. Choose one client PC as master PC used to upload image to the PXE boot server. Attach a hard disk on the PC.
    2. Delete all partitions first. Allocate a small MBR partition about 40G size and leave the rest unallocated. Format the 40G partition with NTFS. Install Windows XP and the latest SP into this partition.
    3. After complete Windows installation, open the local area connection network properties and configure as bellow:

Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click Properties .

Select Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically , then click OK to save.

  • On the PXE boot server, open CCBoot main window, you will find a client in the client list (Figure 10) that was added by CCBoot automatically when the client PC got IP address from the CCBoot DHCP service.
  • Double click the client to edit and check both Enable Upload Image and Keep Write-back File (Figure 11), when press save button it will ask you Are you sure to delete write-back file? Just press No .
  • Download CCBoot client installation package from: http://www.ccboot.com/download.htm. Launch ccbootsetupclient.exe and keep press the next button to the end. Then launch CCBoot client and you will see the main interface as bellow (Figure 12).
  • Press the Install CCBoot Client button. After finished, it will require reboot system. Reboot the client PC.
  • After reboot, launch CCBootClient again, input the correct Server IP address , it should be the IP address of the PC on which CCBoot server has been located. Input the image file name as you want in the Image File Name . Press the Upload Image button to upload the image to the CCBoot server. Then CCBoot will create an image in the server Image Save Path .

Note: CCBoot supports two types image file format. It supports VMDK if you are using Windows 2003 as CCBoot server system. It will support both VMDK and VHD if you are using Windows 7 or Windows 2008. As you can see in Figure 12, the file format depends on what you have set for Image File Name . For example, XP01.vmdk and XP01.vhd .

  • Network Boot Windows XP from The PXE Boot Server
    1. On the PXE boot server, open CCBoot main window, double click PC101 (Figure 10) to open the master PC’s properties dialog box, uncheck Enable Upload Image and Keep Write-back File .
    2. Remove the HDD from the master PC, set it firstly boot from LAN (or network, PXE rom, or some similar settings) in BIOS settings so that it will start network booting Windows XP from the PXE boot server.(Figure 13).
    3. The first time booting Windows XP from the PXE boot server, you can modify its computer name (Figure 14).

Set the computer name as you wish then press enter key to boot it (Figure 15).

    4. On CCBoot server, Options – Settings – Default Client Settings – Disk Group – press the button, select XP01.vmdk as the default boot image in System Image Selection section.
    5. Do the same as Step 2 and Step 3 for other client PCs with the same specifications as the master PC to network boot Windows XP for them.

Windows Server Backup Step-by-Step Guide for Windows Server 2008 #windows #server

    #

Windows Server Backup Step-by-Step Guide for Windows Server 2008

The Windows Server Backup feature provides a basic backup and recovery solution for computers running the Windows Server® 2008 operating system. Windows Server Backup introduces new backup and recovery technology and replaces the previous Windows Backup (Ntbackup.exe) feature that was available with earlier versions of the Windows operating system.

The Windows Server Backup feature in Windows Server 2008 consists of a Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in and command-line tools that provide a complete solution for your day-to-day backup and recovery needs. You can use four wizards to guide you through running backups and recoveries. You can use Windows Server Backup to back up a full server (all volumes), selected volumes, or the system state. You can recover volumes, folders, files, certain applications, and the system state. And, in case of disasters like hard disk failures, you can perform a system recovery, which will restore your complete system onto the new hard disk, by using a full server backup and the Windows Recovery Environment.

You can use Windows Server Backup to create and manage backups for the local computer or a remote computer. You can also schedule backups to run automatically and you can perform one-time backups to augment the scheduled backups.

Windows Server Backup is available in all editions of Windows Server 2008 (both 32-bit and 64-bit versions). However, the Windows Server Backup snap-in is not available for the Server Core installation option of Windows Server 2008. To run backups for computers with a Server Core installation, you need to either use the command line or manage backups remotely from another computer. In addition, Windows PowerShell is not available for the Server Core installation option, so the cmdlets for Windows Server Backup are also not available on this type of installation.

Windows Server Backup includes the following improvements:

    • Faster backup technology. Windows Server Backup uses Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) and block-level backup technology to back up and recover your operating system, files and folders, and volumes. After the first full backup is created, you can configure Windows Server Backup to automatically run incremental backups by saving only the data that has changed since the last backup. Even if you choose to always perform full backups, your backup will take less time than it did in earlier versions of Windows.
  • Simplified restoration. You can restore items by choosing a backup and then selecting specific items from that backup to restore. You can recover specific files from a folder or all the contents of a folder. In addition, previously, you needed to manually restore from multiple backups if the item was stored on an incremental backup. But this is no longer true—you can now choose the date of the backup version for the item you want to restore.
  • Simplified recovery of your operating system. Windows Server Backup works with new Windows recovery tools to make it easier for you to recover your operating system. You can recover to the same server—or if the hardware fails, you can recover to a separate server that has similar hardware and no operating system.
  • Ability to recover applications. Windows Server Backup uses VSS functionality that is built into applications like Microsoft® SQL Server® to protect application data.
  • Improved scheduling. Windows Server Backup includes a wizard that guides you through the process of creating daily backups. System volumes are automatically included in all scheduled backups so that you are protected against disasters.
  • Offsite removal of backups for disaster protection. You can save backups to multiple disks in a rotation, which enables you to move disks from an offsite location. You can add each disk as a scheduled backup location and, if the first disk is moved offsite, Windows Server Backup will automatically save backups to the next disk in the rotation.
  • Remote administration. Windows Server Backup uses an MMC snap-in to give you a familiar and consistent experience for managing your backups. After you install the snap-in, you can access this tool through Server Manager or by adding the snap-in to a new or existing MMC console. Then, you can manage backups on other servers by clicking the Action menu in the snap-in, and then clicking Connect to Another Computer .
  • Automatic disk usage management. After you configure a disk for a scheduled backup, Windows Server Backup automatically manages the disk usage—you do not need to be concerned about running out of disk space after repeated backups. Windows Server Backup will automatically reuse the space of older backups when creating new backups. The management tool displays the backups that are available and the disk usage information. This can help you plan for provisioning additional storage to meet your recovery objectives.
  • Extensive command-line support. Windows Server Backup includes the wbadmin command and documentation, which enable you to perform all of the same tasks at the command line that you can perform by using the snap-in. For more information, see the Command Reference (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=93131 ). You can also automate backup activities through scripting.

In addition, Windows Server 2008 contains a collection of Windows PowerShell™ commands (cmdlets) for Windows Server Backup that you can use to write scripts to perform backups. For more information, see http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=93317 .

  • Support for optical media drives and removable media. You can manually back up volumes directly to optical media drives, such as DVD drives, and also to removable media. This offers a solution if you want to create backups that can easily be moved offsite on a one-time basis. This version of Windows Server Backup retains support for manual backups to shared folders and hard disks.

Why Windows Server Backup Keep Only One Copy? #windows #server #backup

Why Windows Server Backup Keep Only One Copy?

Does Windows Server Backup keep only one copy?

Many users have created backups using Windows Server Backup. Some users assigned a drive letter to the backup drive, and then check the image backup files. To their surprise, there was only one virtual hard disk (VHD) file in the backup location even after running scheduled backups several times. To figure out why this happened, you must understand how Windows Server Backup works. Actually, there no such thing about Windows Server Backup number of copies to keep. If you run a backup, Windows Server Backup will create a VHD file. Then Windows will create a shadow copy of target backup drive where stores the image backup. If you keep running scheduled backups, a lot of shadow copies will be taken. Though there may be one VHD file or VHDX file (in Winodws Server 2012 or latter), you can still restore to previous versions using these shadow copies.

How to track the missing VHD?

To better understand where the VHD file goes, you can actually track the windows server backup multiple copies. To list all the shadow copies, you can run a command “ssadmin list shadows” in an elevated command prompt.

Based on the “Shadow Copy ID” shown in the output, you can find out the backup that is associated with the shadow copy by getting the snapshot ID. To reveal the snapshot of the backups, you can run the command “wbadmin get versions”.

If you are still not sure about this, you can assign a drive letter to the shadow copies. and then you can view the contents in File Explorer by using the following command.

    Diskshadow shadowcopyID driveLetter

For example, to assign drive letter H: to shadow copy . However, if you need more easier ways to handle multiple backup versions, you can switch to third party server backup software that does not have a limit number of copies.

How to keep multiple backup copies?

The server backup and recovery program, AOMEI Backupper Server allows you to save many versions of backup files that can be easily handled in File Explorer. It supports daily/weekly/monthly schedule backup, and you can choose to perform it with full, incremental/differential backup. What’s more, it provides the Disk Space Management feature to automatically clean up the previous obsolete backups.

To backup Windows Server with AOMEI Backupper:

Step1. Download free trial and run this backup tool for Windows Server. Within the intuitive interface, click “System Backup” under the Backup tab.

Step2. Doing System Backup, the program will select all the needed items for system restore automatically by default. Therefore, just click “Step 2” to select the destination location.

Step3. After specifying the destination path, click the “Schedule” button down there, and determine when you want the backup to run in the pop out window.

Step 4. After all settings are done, click “Start Backup” to get the backup running.

Since many people have wondered Why Windows Server Backup keep only one copy, AOMEI Backupper comes in to play and made the versions of backups more easier to understand, which also gives conveninence regarding of Windows Server restore.

Recovery Partition After Upgrading to Windows 10 from Windows 7 #recovery

Recovery Partition After Upgrading to Windows 10 from Windows 7/8

First I want to say how much I appreciate your partition manager. I have used many other software to try to move partitions around and they never quite work for me.

I have been trying to think of a way to thank you for this beautiful, simple and affordable product that saved my day. Again, your product is top notch.

Using Partition Assistant Server, I was able to repair the problem via Remote Desktop and a Cisco IPSec VPN. I will definitely use this product again it will always be highly recommended to my colleagues. Thanks you again.

The Recovery Partition After Upgrading to Windows 10 from Windows 7/8

    What Is Recovery Partition?

Recovery partition is a small partition on your hard drive that can help you restore your Windows or troubleshoot system issues. There are two kinds of recovery partitions you may see in Windows 10/8/7.

    Windows recovery partition

When installing a Windows operating system (OS) on a hard drive, and if you use Windows Setup to create new partition on an MBR disk, Windows will create a system reserved partition, and if it is a GPT disk, then Windows will create a recovery partition and a EFI system partition without drive letter. The recovery partition on Windows 10 consumes about 450MB, Windows 8/8.1 200MB, and Windows 7 100MB.

This recovery partition is to hold the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE), which can be explored if you manually assign a drive letter to it. If you delete this partition, you won’t be able to use Windows Recovery options. If you create Windows 10 recovery disk. Windows will give you an option to remove the recovery partition. With the recovery drive, you can still use Windows recovery options. Otherwise, if you install Windows on a hard drive containing multiple partitions, Windows will save the WinRE in a folder named Recovery in the root directory of your system drive (C: drive) without leaving a recovery partition.

    OEM recovery partition

Apart from the recovery partition of Windows, there may be another recovery partition created by the computer manufacturer like Lenovo and Dell that has made their computer come with an OEM recovery partition consuming about 7 to 20 GB, which contains the WinRE and their factory installation files.

On some computers, the WinRE and the factory installation are separately stored on two partitions, so you may see two OEM partitions on your computer. This OEM partition allows you to press a specified key to boot into Recovery Environment, so you can recover your OS to factory setting without a Windows installation disc. If you have a copy of Windows installation, you can delete this OEM partition to free up more disk space.

Why An Extra Recovery Partition Created During Upgrade?

Every time when you upgrade Windows to the next version, the upgrade program will create a recovery partition if it detects that there is no sufficient space on your recovery partition (GPT disk) or system reserved partition (MBR disk). There is no wonder that you have many recovery partitions after upgrading to Windows 10. If you don’t want Windows to create another recovery partition, you can increase the size of recovery partition or system reserved partition before upgrading to Windows 10.

According to Microsoft, the previous Windows version recovery partition will be nonfunctional, so you can delete the previous recovery partition to free up some disk space. As you may know that Windows can only shrink a partition from its right side, so you can tell which recovery partition was new created by upgrading to Windows 10. For example, as the screenshot below, the 100MB recovery partition was created when installing Windows 7, the 200MB recovery partition was created when upgrading Windows 7 to Windows 8, the 500MB recovery partition was created when upgrading Windows 8 to Windows 10, and the OEM recovery partition created by PC manufacturer before shipping.

As you see the new created Windows recovery partition stands in the way of extending system partition. If you do not want to delete the recovery partition, you can move Windows 10 recovery partition without data loss.

How to Delete Recovery Partition in Windows 10?

You cannot delete a recovery partition with Windows 10 Disk Management for it has crucial files, but you can use diskpart.exe to delete recovery partition. However, you still cannot extend the remaining partition with the new created unallocated space if the recovery partition appears before the C: drive. Hence, you need third party partition software to do this job. AOMEI Partition Assistant Standard, free partition software, can delete recovery partition and extend a partition as long as there is unallocated space on the disk.

    2. Right click the recovery partition you want to delete and select Delete Partition . Then you can see the recovery partition becomes an unallocated space. Actually no changes will be made until you confirm and click Apply.

    3. Click Merge Partitions . In the pop-out window, check the unallocated space and the partition you want to extend.

    4. Check the pending operations and click Apply to save the changes.

This operation will complete under AOMEI PreOS mode, so do not be panic when your computer reboot.

How to Create A Recovery Partition?

Many users have met the problem that OEM partition won’t work after upgrading to Windows 10. What to do when you want to use recovery options only to find you have mistakenly delete the recovery partition? You can use AOMEI OneKey Recovery to create a recovery partition on Windows 10 to backup and restore your current system including all the programs installed on C: drive. It also allows you to press a specified key “F1” or “A” to boot into AOMEI OneKey Recovery environment when your computer starts.

After creating the recovery partition, you can also keep the system backup image files in other locations besides the recovery partition, which means you can keep many system backups at same time. When system fails to work, you can just press the Specified key to boot into AOMEI OneKey Recovery and select the system backup to restore system .

The recovery partition after upgrading to Windows 10 won’t consumes much space on your hard drive, so it is recommended to leave it be. If you really want to get rid of recovery partition, backup essential files before deleting.

How would you feel if one of your important file from Windows PC is deleted?

In order to make best possible usage of storage space, most of Windows users divide their hard disk drive into different partitions. Having multiple HDD partitions facilitates you to store and categorize files in a well organized and customized way and it also helps to use different operating systems on the same hard drive. However, sometimes Windows users end up with huge data loss due some unforeseen reasons. Most often an entire partition gets deleted while partitioning the hard drive. In case if you have deleted the entire partition from Windows hard drive and thinking about how to overcome data loss, then no need to worry. You can easily rescue Windows HDD partition at your fingertips without contacting any recovery experts. This Windows data rescue is easily achieved by using various rescue tools. Windows File Recovery is one such strong and trustworthy software which restores all types of files at one go. You can also utilize this easy to use tool to recover photos Windows laptops and desktops without any other difficulty.

Prior to discussing Windows data recovery process, it is good to know how data gets lost or deleted. Some of the common data loss scenarios are listed here.

    • Sometimes while re-partitioning or deleting Windows HDD using Disk Management tool, if you accidentally delete some other HDD partition apart from which you are intended to delete. In case if backup of data stored on deleted partition is not available, then it leads to huge loss of data from Windows hard drive.
    • Sometimes due to hard drive crash or OS crash there are chances of Master Boot Record or partition table corruption. Since these are key elements to access different partitions of Windows hard drive, in case if they get corrupt or damaged, all partitions on Windows become inaccessible.
    • There are some tough times in which an entire HDD partition of Windows hard drive becomes inaccessible due to file system breakdown or virus infection. In order to access such corrupt partitions it needs to be formatted. In case if user has not taken suitable backup before formatting then critical data loss is definite.

Irrespective of the cause, this efficient tool will rescue all types of files from Windows computers in few minutes. This tool also has a capability to perform file recovery after system crash on all the latest versions of Windows OS. It also facilitates you to add/edit file signatures which are not listed during file recovery process. Moreover, this tool provides an advanced option to avoid bad sectors on hard drive by creating disc images of recovered files.

Perform below mentioned steps to perform Windows file recovery:

Step 1: Launch free trial version of the software, on the home screen select Recover Files option in order to proceed further.

Step 2: On the next screen displayed, select Recover Deleted Files or Recover Lost Files options in order to perform Windows file recovery operation.

    Configure self-hosted web service on Windows Server 2012 #self-hosted #web #service,

    #

Self-hosted Web Service on Windows Server 2012

When it comes to hosting web services, Microsoft Windows Server platform can do the job with or without an actual web server. In Windows Server, web server would be IIS. If IIS is installed, web service can be hosted as a website, be configured using .config files, and generally speaking all TCP/IP or SSL configuration would be done at the IIS level. This may be more convenient for people who are used to IIS or who have to have IIS up for other reasons, however in some cases you may prefer to avoid IIS and keep your attack surface to the minimum.

Self-hosting means no IIS to install and it relies on http.sys, something that is present on all Windows Server machines as part of the TCP/IP stack. Self-hosted services can be managed through netsh command line interface.

Discussion of pros and cons of self-hosted web services is outside the scope of this article but a good place to start reading up on that is on Stack Overflow .

    Self-Hosted Web Service Installation

Self-hosted web service relies on something else other than IIS to open a socket and listen for inbound connections. This can be done by deploying your application as a Windows service. NET Framework has a handy utility called InstallUtil.exe. located in C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\ folder (.NET Framework 4.0, Windows Server 2012).

The command above installs a Visual Studio console application as a Windows service. Right after running this command, you can launch services.msc and check for presense of this new Windows service.

For console application to install as a Windows service, you need to add Installer class to your project, which will tell InstallUtil.exe how to deploy the service:

On line 10, the name of the Windows service is set to the WindowsServiceName string value from the application config file.

Configure URL Binding and SSL Certificate

For Windows service to bind successfully to a network socket, you need to configure URL access control list using netsh.exe CLI:

Since in this example we are using SSL (port 443, https) we also need to assign a valid certificate to the same binding:

Now this last command is a little tricky. How do you find out certificate_hash and app_guid of your certificate and application?

Certificate hash can be obtained directly by inspecting X.509 certificate using Certificates MMC snap-in, or via certutil -store command. Find the certificate you want to use, copy its cert hash value (deleting all spaces) and you are set.

Getting App ID is a tad more complicated. Best way to do this is by calling it from the code using the following method:

Call this method somewhere in the opening lines of your web services application and either Debug.Print the output to the console, or write it into event log, or simply break-point it and check it out in the immediate window. App ID does not change but getting it isn t very convenient.

    Verify Configuration

That s all there is to setting up self-hosted web services on the Windows Server 2012 platform. Make sure that your Windows Firewall, if enabled, is configured to allow port 80/443 (as applicable).

At this point, start Windows service that was installed using InstallUtil.exe .

To confirm that your socket was opened successfully:

To confirm configuraion of URL ACL:

    To confirm SSL certificate binding:

    Closing Thoughts

Ultimately, it is up to you to configure the type of network binding (http or https) and the service URL (https://www.flexecom.com:443 ) of your web service. There are several ways to do this, the preferred way for self-hosted web services is to set these parameters directly using .NET code within your assembly. Whatever settings you configure, they need to match the netsh configuration (specifically URLACL), otherwise your service will fail to open the socket. SSL certificate is required for HTTPS bindings. More on how to do this in another post.

Binding Multiple Web Services to the Same Socket

Is possible! All you have to do is modify the URL of the web service in your code and make sure that netsh command gets executed to add all web service URLs to the http ACL. You can have many web services running off the same base URL (https://www.flexecom.com:443 ) as long as what follows after / is unique. This allows you to setup a production web service as well as a dev/qa web service using the same single-name SSL certificate, the same public IP address, and the same server.

Did you like this article? Share it with your friends!

If you get SSL Certificate add failed, Error: 87 message, or The parameter is incorrect message when you run the netsh http add sslcert command, try the following:

    1. Stop the services that are running, which bind to the socket that uses this certificate
    2. Go into netsh CLI (command line interface)
    netsh [Enter]
    http [Enter]
    add sslcert hostnameport=www.flexecom.com:443 certhash= appid= certstorename=MY

This assumes that the certificate is imported into the Local Machine store of course.

Another note if your app code is searching for the certificate by a subject name, and if the subject name of a newly installed certificate matches a subject name of another certificate in the store (such as in the case of renewing an existing certificate), the code may fail to open a network binding with a new certificate if it finds more than one match based on the same subject name. It really depends on the app code. Obviously, solution is to delete the old certificate.

Your Windows hosting company should support the latest .NET technologies and their most recent versions. Make sure that if you need ASP.NET Core / 4.6 hosting, IIS8, MVC 6, MS SQL 2016 your host support them. Even if you do not need the most recent versions ask yourself if you will use them in the near future?

Also check the ways you could connect to your database server and make web site deployment.

Most of the best ASP.NET Hosts support the latest and innovative .NET hosting technologies.

Some Windows hosting companies provide Knowledge Base with answers of commonly asked questions.

Most of the best ASP.NET Hosts answer of your questions in less than 30 minutes.

    ASP.NET Hosting Uptime

ASP.NET Hosting Uptime is a measure of the time a Windows Hosting Server has been “up” and running. It came into use to describe the opposite of downtime, times when a Windows Server was not operational. The uptime and reliability of Windows Server and communications facilities is sometimes measured in nines. “Five nines” means 99.999% availability, which translates to a total downtime of approximately five minutes and fifteen seconds per year.

Most of the best ASP.NET Hosts have 99.9% uptime guarantee.

    ASP.NET Hosting Datacenter

This is where is physically located your Windows hosting server. It should provide the highest quality Internet connectivity, security and reliable power systems.

Some Windows hosting providers have datacenters in different locations, so you should check the locations before you sign up.

Most of the best ASP.NET Hosts have their own data centers.

    ASP.NET Hosting Disk Space

This is the amount of hard drive space where are located your files, and databases. The hard drives could be single SATA, SAS or multiple hard drives in RAID. You should be sure that the hard disk space will be enough for your project. Take in mind that the used disk space includes project files, database files and log files. Some hosting providers offer second hard drive for your backups.

    ASP.NET Hosting Monthly Data Transfer

ASP.NET Hosting Bandwidth is used to describe the amount of data that can be transferred to or from the ASP.NET website or Windows server, measured in bytes transferred over a prescribed period of time. This can be more accurately described as “Monthly Data Transfer.”

You could easily calculate your ASP.NET website Monthly Data Transfer, it’s just the Page/File size multiplied by the number of loads (views).

Make sure that your Windows hosting company provides enough Monthly Data Transfer for your needs.

    ASP.NET Hosting Control Panel

You could use an ASP.NET Hosting Control Panel for managing the Web server and installing scripts as well as other services like e-mail. Most popular Windows hosting control panel is Plesk. Some ASP.NET hosting companies offer their own hosting control panel.

The good Windows hosting control panel will make your daily tasks more easily.

    ASP.NET Hosting Price

The ASP.NET Hosting price is very important, but not the most important factor when you are looking for the best ASP.NET Host. It’s more important to receive high quality hosting services than to save few bucks. Also you should take in mind that the cheaper hosting provider today could be the most expensive tomorrow, so look for the better price today but target a quality hosting services in a long term.

    ASP.NET Hosting Money-back Guarantee

This option means that you could sign up with some ASP.NET hosting company and if you are not happy with the service you could get your money back. A very useful option if you are not sure if some Windows hosting company is good for you.

Most of the best ASP.NET Hosts offer at least 30 day money-back guarantee.

    ASP.NET Hosting Add-ons

These are free additional features and preinstalled software as blogs, forums, eCommerce applications, advertising credits etc. Make sure if you need particular add-on that your Windows hosting provider supports it.

Most of the best ASP.NET Hosts offer wide array of features and add-ons.

    ASP.NET Hosting Reviews

There are many ASP.NET hosting reviews in the Internet, but most of them are fake, because are made by concurrent ASP.NET hosting companies. You could read ASP.NET hosting reviews but do not full trust them.

Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT) Overview #windows #deployment #toolkit

    #

To say that today’s IT departments are stretched to capacity is an understatement. Tasked with managing multi-platform environments, increasingly sophisticated security threats, and staying abreast of new technologies means that any opportunity to increase efficiency is more than welcome.

Whether you’re supporting tens or thousands of devices, automation and simplification are key. Let’s consider the scenario where an administrator is faced with upgrading hundreds or thousands of computers to the latest Windows and Office releases. In the dark ages, this would involve toting a box of diskettes from pc to pc and painstakingly loading one client at a time.

But times have changed and the process of applying software updates with it. In order to help automate the deployment process, Microsoft introduced the Microsoft Deployment Kit (MDT).

How can MDT help you? Let’s examine how MDT works and whether it will work for you. We’ll also take a quick look at the installation steps and resources for using MDT.

    What is MDT?

The Microsoft Deployment Toolkit is a product in the solution accelerator lineup. And how can it help network administrators? In a word, automation. MDT 2010 provides one console with a complete toolset and documentation that will help you deploy both Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 release 2.

The latest release, MDT 2010 Update 1 includes Office 2010 and enhanced Windows 7 driver support. And if you’re in the camp that would like to provide your end user community with greater control and responsibility, the Configuration Manager tool will allow you to give them the ability to initiate and customize their own deployments. The wizard will walk them through the process step-by-step – taking automation to another level.

    MDT Systems Requirements

To use Microsoft Deployment Toolkit, you’ll need the following:

  • Windows Server 2008
  • Windows Deployment Services
  • Windows 7 DVD/source

    How Does MDT Work?

Most organizations will have a typical stable of software that they deploy. This could include the operating system, hardware device drivers, software patches or updates, and of course, applications. With MDT, you add all of these to the collection of available software – or deployment packages.

The administrator decides which OS and other software should be included in each package, then includes password and product key information. Users will use a custom image called the Windows PE image to boot up (this can also be burned to a CD) and log into the network. They can then install packages from the MDT server.

    Microsoft Deployment Toolkit Options

  • Deployment without management infrastructure.
  • Process manually initiated by administrator.
  • Uses network shares, Windows Deployment Services, CD/DVD, or USB.
  • For: refresh, upgrade, replace or new computer.
  • Scheduled and automated via ConfigMgr.
  • For: refresh, replace, or new computer.

    MDT Installation and Deployment Configuration

Download the appropriate file for your architecture, then double click the file to launch the installer.

In order to create your deployment configuration you’ll need to do the following:

  • Create the distribution share
  • Add operating system files to the share
  • Create a task sequence for the reference computer
  • Create a deployment point

    MDT Training and Resources

Rhonda Layfield, Microsoft’s Setup and Deployment MVP, covers MDT and other Windows 7 Deployment tools in-depth in her new Windows 7 Deployment Training. This comprehensive course is currently the only video training course available on the market that covers Windows 7 deployment tools and techniques and includes everything you’ll need to master Windows 7 Deployment while preparing for the 70-681 MCTS exam.

For up to date news and information, visit the MDT blog and if you find yourself in need of technical assistance, one of the best places to look for help is the MDT Forum. Forums are an excellent resource as they offer a treasure trove of questions and answers – it’s very likely that someone has experienced a problem similar to yours.

In terms of physical texts, there aren’t many books written on the subject yet, but I found Deployment Fundamentals: Deploying Windows clients using MDT 2010 Lite Touch on Amazon. Rhonda Layfield’s Mastering Windows 7 Deployment will be available is March, 2011 and will also cover MDT along with other Windows 7 deployment options in detail.

    Next Steps

I hope you’ve enjoyed this overview of MDT. As a free download, this is a tool certainly worth evaluating. The potential benefits include time savings, greater end user empowerment, and overall simplification of administrative tasks.

  • How to install an SSH Server in Windows Server 2008 #install

    #

How to install an SSH Server in Windows Server 2008

    Introduction

There are a number of command line options available to configure Window Server 2008 over the network. For example, Windows Powershell, ServerManager.exe. or a telnet server. However, the tried and true method that has worked so well with just about every type of infrastructure device in use today (including Windows Server 2008, Cisco Routers, Linux servers, and more) is SSH. In this article, learn how to install a SSH Server in Windows Server 2008.

    What is SSH?

SSH is the secure shell, a standard defined in RFC 4251. It is a network protocol that opens up a secure channel between two devices using TCP port 22. This channel can also be used for SFTP and SCP (secure FTP and secure copy, respectively). To make this work, you need a secure server on the system you are connecting to and a secure client on the client you are connecting from.

Keep in mind that SSH is completely interoperable between different platforms. For example, you could connect to a SSH server on a Cisco router from a Windows client, you could connect to a Linux server from a Cisco router, and you could connect to a Windows 2008 Server from a Linux client.

The only possible compatibility issue is that there are two versions of SSH, SSH version 1 and SSH version 2. You should make sure that the server and client support the same versions so that you know which version you are using when you connect. Usually, this version can be negotiated.

While none of the Windows operating systems come with a SSH Server or Client, they are very easy to install.

By having a SSH Server on your Windows 2008 Server, you can:

    • Remotely access the command line of your Windows 2008 Server
    • Control the Server over the network, even if you cannot access the GUI interface
    • Remotely manage your Windows 2008 Server from any device that has a SSH Client
    • Do all this over an encrypted connection that could even securely traverse the Internet

What SSH Server options are available for Windows 2008 Server?

There are a number of SSH Server options available for Windows Server 2008. Here are just some of the few that I ran across:

Once you have your SSH Server running, you will most likely need a SSH Client for Windows. Here are a couple of the most popular SSH Clients for Windows that I have found:

How do I install FreeSSHd SSH Server in Windows Server 2008?

Because the installation for Free SSHd is so simple as compared to others (especially as compared to OpenSSH in Windows), I have chosen to demonstrate how to install and use Free SSHd. Remember that FreeSSHd is totally free (as the name says) both for personal / non-commercial use but also for commercial use.

To start this process, I downloaded FreeSSHd.exe on my Windows Server 2008 system and ran the downloaded program. The graphical installation began.

I took all the defaults for the installation options and clicked Install to being the install.

When done, I opted not to run SSHd as a service but that may be what you want to do on your production server.

By running FreeSSHd as service, it would be available no matter if you were logged into the console or not. I also chose to create private keys for the SSH server.

Next, I ran the FreeSSHd shortcut on the desktop in order to configure and start the SSH server.

I could see that the SSHd server was already running.

The FreeSSHd application can offer the following:

    • Both SSH Server and Telnet Server capabilities
    • Options to run SSHd on only certain interfaces
    • Multiple methods of authentication, including integrated NTLM authentication to Windows AD
    • Multiple methods of encryption including AES 128, AES 256, 3DES, Blowfish, and more
    • Options to bring up a secure tunnel upon connection
    • Optional Secure FTP (sFTP) for secure FTP, see the FreeFTPd website
    • The ability to administer users and restrict access to secure shell, secure tunnel, or secure FTP
    • Ability to allow access to only certain hosts or subnets
    • Ability to log all connections and commands performed through FreeSSHd
    • View currently connected users
    • Update FreeSSHd automatically

For me to be able to login, I had to do two things:

    1. Add a new user account and allow SSH command line access
    2. Open an exception in my Windows Server 2008 Firewall

To add a new user, I went to the Users tab and clicked Add.

I opted to set up a login for my local Windows administrator account. I set the authorization to NTLM. That way, there was no local password in the FreeSSHd database and if the administrator password changes in the local Windows account database, you don’t have to change the password in the FreeSSHd account database.

I authorized this new administrator SSH user to log in with SSH only.

    Here are the results:

The second thing I had to do to allow me to login was to open an exception in the Windows Firewall. While I could disable the Windows Firewall completely instead of opening the ports, of course the most secure option is to leave the firewall up and allow for an exception for SSH – TCP port 22.

To do that, I went to Start – Administrative Tools – Windows Firewall with Advanced Security.

Next, I clicked on Inbound Rules, then on New Rule.

Next, I chose to add a Port rule.

Windows 10 can run reworked Android and iOS apps – The

    #

Windows 10 can run reworked Android and iOS apps

After months of rumors, Microsoft is revealing its plans to get mobile apps on Windows 10 today. While the company has been investigating emulating Android apps. it has settled on a different solution, or set of solutions, that will allow developers to bring their existing code to Windows 10.

iOS and Android developers will be able to port their apps and games directly to Windows universal apps, and Microsoft is enabling this with two new software development kits. On the Android side, Microsoft is enabling developers to use Java and C++ code on Windows 10, and for iOS developers they’ll be able to take advantage of their existing Objective C code. “We want to enable developers to leverage their current code and current skills to start building those Windows applications in the Store, and to be able to extend those applications,” explained Microsoft’s Terry Myerson during an interview with The Verge this morning.

The idea is simple, the execution is a little more complex

The idea is simple, get apps on Windows 10 without the need for developers to rebuild them fully for Windows. While it sounds simple, the actual process will be a little more complicated than just pushing a few buttons to recompile apps. “Initially it will be analogous to what Amazon offers,” notes Myerson, referring to the Android work Microsoft is doing. “If they’re using some Google API… we have created Microsoft replacements for those APIs.” Microsoft’s pitch to developers is to bring their code across without many changes, and then eventually leverage the capabilities of Windows like Cortana, Xbox Live, Holograms, Live Tiles, and more. Microsoft has been testing its new tools with some key developers like King, the maker of Candy Crush Saga, to get games ported across to Windows. Candy Crush Saga as it exists today on Windows Phone has been converted from iOS code using Microsoft’s tools without many modifications.

” At times we’ve thought, lets just do iOS.”

During Microsoft’s planning for bringing iOS and Android apps to Windows, Myerson admits it wasn’t always an obvious choice to have both. “At times we’ve thought, let’s just do iOS,” Myerson explains. “But when we think of Windows we really think of everyone on the planet. There’s countries where iOS devices aren’t available.” Supporting both Android and iOS developers allows Microsoft to capture everyone who is developing for mobile platforms right now, even if most companies still continue to target iOS first and port their apps to Android at the same time or shortly afterward. By supporting iOS developers, Microsoft wants to be third in line for these ported apps, and that’s a better situation than it faces today.

Alongside the iOS and Android SDKs, Microsoft is also revealing ways for websites and Windows desktop apps to make their way over to Windows universal apps. Microsoft has created a way for websites to run inside a Windows universal app, and use system services like notifications and in-app purchases. This should allow website owners to easily create web apps without much effort, and list those apps in the Windows Store. It’s not the best alternative to a native app for a lot of scenarios, but for simple websites it offers up a new way to create an app without its developers having to learn new code languages. Microsoft is also looking toward existing Windows desktop app developers with Windows 10. Developers will be able to leverage their .NET and Win32 work and bring this to Windows universal apps. “Sixteen million .NET and Win32 apps are still being used every month on Windows 7 and Windows 8,” explains Myerson, so it’s clear Microsoft needs to get these into Windows 10.

Microsoft is using some of its HyperV work to virtualize these existing desktop apps on Windows 10. Adobe is one particular test case where Microsoft has been working closely with the firm to package its apps ready for Windows 10. Adobe Photoshop Elements is coming to the Windows Store as a universal app, using this virtualization technology. Performance is key for many desktop apps, so it will be interesting to see if Microsoft has managed to maintain a fluid app experience with this virtualization.

A set of bridges to Windows 10

Collectively, Microsoft is referring to these four new SDKs as bridges or ramps to get developers interested in Windows 10. It’s a key moment for the company to really win back developers and prove that Windows is still relevant in a world that continues to be dominated by Android and iOS. The aim, as Myerson puts it, is to get Windows 10 on 1 billion devices within the next two to three years. That’s a big goal, and the company will need the support of developers and apps to help it get there.

These SDKs will generate questions among Microsoft’s core development community, especially those who invested heavily in the company’s Metro-style design and the unique features of Windows apps in the past. The end result for consumers is, hopefully, more apps, but for developers it’s a question of whether to simply port their existing iOS and Android work across and leave it at that, or extend those apps to use Windows features or even some design elements. “We want to structure the platform so it’s not an all or nothing,” says Myerson. “If you use everything together it’s beautiful, but that’s not required to get started.”

Microsoft still has the tricky mix of ported apps to contend with, and that could result in an app store similar to Amazon’s, or even one where developers still aren’t interested in porting. This is just the beginning, and Windows universal apps, while promising, still face a rocky and uncertain future.

Trane Air Conditioners Prices – Pros, Cons, and Cost

Thank you for allowing QualitySmith to assist you. Come back and see us again soon!

Trane is among the best in the business when it comes to the world of air conditioners. Trane air conditioner prices are competitive and their products have earned a reputation for reliability throughout the company’s line. This reputation is backed by a 10-year minimum warranties on nearly every part of any Trane air conditioner.

Trane, like most air conditioning manufacturers, does not list prices on its website. Trane air conditioner prices fluctuate depending on a number of variables: the company sells the systems wholesale at different rates to contractors all over the world. What you end up paying is a combination of the price of the unit and the installation cost.

This guide is meant as an overview of estimated Trane air conditioner prices, including installation and the wholesale unit cost. What you pay could vary from the prices listed below, as prices can change based on location and many other factors. For more specific Trane air conditioner prices, click here for up to four free estimates from reputable contractors in your area .

SEER, or seasonal energy efficiency ratio, is the primary factor that determines long-term energy savings. It defines how much energy is converted into cold air by describing the cooling output in Btu’s divided by the total energy output in watt-hours. If you’re comparing central air conditioners with different SEER ratings, we recommend Energy Star’s efficiency calculator in Excel format.

    TRANE AIR CONDITIONER PRICES

    The Top of the Line

About: The following two systems are the premier systems and have the highest price tag of the Trane line. However, with the combination of high efficiency and other beneficial aspects, they may be worth the additional cost. You should take note that the varying stage cooling offered by these two systems can also drastically reduce energy usage and humidity by allowing the air conditioner to operate at 100% capacity or 67% capacity. Single-stage systems only operate at 100% capacity.

    • Comfort-R technology for reduced humidity
    • Comfort Link technology for remote access via computer or smartphone
    • Dual compressors for variable cooling during hot and mild temperatures to reduce energy use
    • 12-year warranty on the compressor
    • 10-year warranty on the outdoor coil
    • 10-year warranty on internal functioning parts

    The Reliable Mid-Range

About: Trane air conditioner prices for these mid-range systems are more reasonable than the premier systems, but lack some of the shiny amenities of Trane’s top-of-the-line systems. These mid-range air conditioners still offer excellent efficiency that is bound to reduce your energy bills throughout those summer months. Note that the XB14, despite a 16.5 energy efficiency rating, uses lower quality parts than the XR and XL models, which is why it carries it a lower price tag and, generally, lower reliability.

    Trane XR15 Prices

    • 17 SEER
    • Single-stage cooling (less effectively reduces humidity than multiple stages)
    • 10-year warranty on the compressor
    • 10-year warranty on the outdoor coil

    Windows 8 #online #system #backup, #windows #8

Windows 8.1 Tip: Use System Image Backup

When the Windows 8 .1 Preview appeared in June, some upgraders noticed that this new OS version omitted what had previously been a crucial recovery tool: The system image backup that had debuted in Windows 7. But system image backup is indeed available in Windows 8.1. It s just really well hidden.

I wrote about using system image backup with Windows 8 last year in Windows 8 Tip: Use Windows 7 System Image Backup. And if you re interested in how Windows 8.1 changes the recovery story, be sure to check out Hands-On with Windows 8.1: System Recovery. That article has a discussion about the devices-based alternatives to system image backup that are available in this new OS release.

Here, I ll focus on how you access system image backup in Windows 8.1. It s changed since Windows 8, where you could find it by searching for recovery . That tip no longer works in Windows 8.1.

When you think about system image backup, you have to see both sides of the equation. On the one hand, you have the ability to make system image backups. And on the other, you have the ability to do a complete OS restore.

To make a system image backup in Windows 8.1, you must navigate to the File History control panel (and not the main File History interface, which is in the Metro-style PC Settings.) Using Smart Search, be sure to choose the right entry.

In the File History control panel that appears, look in the lower left corner. The option you re looking for is System Image Backup. Click that, and the familiar Create a System Image wizard appears and you re good to go.

To restore an existing system image backup that is, to restore the entire OS install to a previous point in time simply plug-in the external drive that contains the backup. Then, navigate to PC Settings, Update and Recovery, Recovery and click the Restart Now button under Advanced Startup. The PC will restart.

At the Choose an Option screen, choose Troubleshoot.

    At Troubleshoot, choose Advanced Options.

At the Advanced Options screen, choose System Image Recovery. The PC will restart.

At the System Image Recovery screen, select your user name and then type your password when prompted.

The Re-Image Your Computer wizard will start. In the first page of this wizard, select the correct system image you wish to restore to. Then click Next and step through the wizard to restore your PC to the selected system image backup.

Is this the ideal tool for backing up and restoring Windows 8.1? No. But for those that wish to continue using this tool, it does still work. And of course it s valuable to have around if you have backups from previous versions of Windows.

I don’t know about the pure and refined ideal, but I’ve got the next best thing.

First, if it’s not automated, it’s not a useful backup. You’ll just stop doing it eventually.

The only automated backup that cover programs and files, can restore to a different PC and doesn’t slow the computer (that I could find) is Zinstall Backup.
And you don’t need to be a guru to use it.

    You can read more here:
    zinstall.com/backup

    Hope this helps!

Paul – Do you know of a powershell script to create a system image backup in 8.1? Since MS took away the scheduling feature a script would allow us to still use the Task Scheduler.

Had a new SFP3 after a warranty exchange due to screen damage. I have followed and stored the system image backup and file history on an ext HD (2T) with no other files on.
Unfortunately when i follow all the steps above, at the Re-image your computer screen, i get the following

“To restore this computer, Windows need to format the drive that Windows Recvoery Environment is currently running on. To continue with the shut down this computer and boot if from a Windows installation disc or a system disc and then try the restore again.”
Can i boot from the ext HD? what are the steps involved?
    thanks!

    two comments:
    1) using the cloud et al sounds great. as long as one has access. This Dell 2:1 has only WIFI, no Ethernet, which has failed. Could be hardware or software. In any event, cloud access does not work. So I followed the script above and made a System Image Backup on 3/9 and another one today.
    2) using these System Image Backup Files, can I restore to the 3/9 version and see if the WIFI starts working again (if it relies on software?); then restore the version from today to get all the apps, installs and whatnot restored. If it is hardware, this represents an exercise in frustration of course. Then I read the last comment above and wondered if all this could be lost.

    Download Intel I219-V LAN Driver #intel #i219-v #lan #driver #12.13.17.7 #for

    #

In order to manually update your driver, follow the steps below (the next steps):

    1. Go to Device Manager (right click on My Computer, choose Manage and then find Device Manager in the left panel)

    2. Right click on the hardware device you wish to update and choose Update Driver Software

    3. Choose to select the location of the new driver manually and browse to the folder where you downloaded the driver

    About Ethernet Driver:

Windows platforms generally apply a generic driver that allows motherboards to recognize the Ethernet component.

However, in order to make use of all network card (adapter) features, you must install a proper LAN driver that enables the hardware. This task enables systems to connect to a network, as well as collect all component characteristics such as manufacturer and chipset.

If you intend to update the driver version, know that this process can add support for new OSes, fix different compatibility problems, resolve related errors encountered during the product s lifetime, as well as include various other changes.

When it comes to the actual installation procedure, we should note that most producers try to make it as easy as possible, so following the steps should be a breeze: just get the downloadable package, run the setup, and follow the on-screen instructions.

There is a chance that other OSes could also be suitable, but it is not advisable that you install this release on platforms other than the specified ones. Remember to perform a system reboot once done, to allow all changes to take effect properly.

Therefore, if you wish to apply this version, click on the download button and enable your network card. To stay up to speed with the latest updates, check back with our website as often as possible.
